This page lists two hundred and three residential care homes across Surrey, all registered with the Care Quality Commission. They range from small homes with a handful of bedrooms to larger purpose built settings run by national providers. What should I ask when I visit a care home in Surrey?

Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, and how long the current team has worked there, because settled staffing usually shows in the quality of care. Ask what happens if a resident becomes more unwell and whether the home could continue to meet their needs or would need to arrange a move. Ask to see a recent menu and activity plan, and ask how the home keeps families informed. It is also worth asking what the weekly fee includes and which items are charged on top.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation with personal care, meaning help with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, meals and medication. A nursing home provides the same personal care but also has registered nurses on the premises at all times to deliver clinical care. Every home on this page is registered for residential care rather than nursing. If a registered nurse is needed on site, a nursing home is the correct registration to search for instead.

Can Surrey County Council pay for a residential care placement?

It can, where a financial assessment shows that savings and assets fall below the national capital threshold and a care needs assessment confirms that residential care is required. The council then contributes towards the weekly fee, and the resident pays a contribution from their income. If a family chooses a home that charges more than the council has agreed to fund, a third party top up may be needed to cover the difference. The council can explain the thresholds and how a property is treated in the calculation.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Surrey?

Contact the adult social care team at Surrey County Council and request an assessment for yourself or the person you care for. There is no charge for the assessment and no savings test to qualify for one, as the right applies to anyone who appears to need care and support. A social care practitioner will look at daily needs, safety at home and the support already in place before recommending the type of care that fits. If the person is currently in hospital, the discharge team can start the same process from the ward.

How far ahead should I start looking for a care home?

Start as soon as you sense that living at home is becoming difficult, rather than waiting for a fall or a hospital admission to force the decision. Good homes in Surrey often have waiting lists, and an unhurried search lets you visit more than once and at different times of day. Beginning early also leaves room for the assessment and any financial checks to be completed without pressure. If a move is urgent, homes with immediate vacancies can still be found, but the choice will be narrower.

What residential care in Surrey involves, and what to look for

A residential care home provides a permanent home with personal care built into daily life: help with washing and dressing, meals, medication, and the company of staff who are there around the clock. It does not provide nursing on site, which is the line that separates it from a nursing home. Across Surrey there are two hundred and three residential care homes on this directory, all of them registered with the Care Quality Commission, and the differences between them are considerable once you look past the front door.

Reading the inspection picture

Every registered home carries a Care Quality Commission judgement, and the homes listed here span the full spread. Some, such as Mill Green and Appleby House, hold an Outstanding rating. The majority are rated Good. A number sit at Requires Improvement, and a few, including newer or recently registered services, have not yet been rated at all. A rating is a starting point rather than a verdict, so read the report behind it. An older Good rating tells you less about today than a recent inspection does, and a Requires Improvement judgement often turns on one specific area the provider has since been working to put right.

Judging daily life inside the home

Visit at a time when the home is busy, such as late morning or around a mealtime, and watch how staff speak to the people who live there. Ask how many carers are on shift overnight, how long the team has been in post, and what happens when someone becomes unwell. Look at whether residents are occupied or simply seated, whether bedrooms feel personal, and whether the atmosphere is calm. Practical questions matter too: distance from family, access to a garden, whether the home can support changing needs over time, and how visiting works.

Arranging an assessment and meeting the cost of a place in Surrey

The care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support has a legal right to an assessment, whatever their savings. The assessment establishes what help is needed and forms the basis of everything that follows, so it is worth arranging early rather than during a crisis. In this area that work is carried out by Surrey County Council adult social care, which will also complete a separate financial assessment to work out whether public funding applies. A hospital discharge team can trigger the same process if a move into residential care follows a stay in hospital.

How places are paid for

Funding for a residential place comes from one of three directions: the local authority, the National Health Service where a health need is the primary reason for care, or the person themselves. Where savings and assets sit above the national threshold, the cost is met privately, and homes set their own weekly fees according to the room and the level of support required. Below that threshold the council contributes, though families sometimes pay a top up if they choose a home costing more than the council will fund. Ask each home directly what its fee covers and what is charged as an extra, since hairdressing, chiropody and outings are often billed separately.
