About Mill Green
Mill Green is a residential care home near East Grinstead supporting older people and adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays. We plan around individuals, which is what makes a home with this mix of residents work. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings and a genuine say in how the house runs, from what is cooked to how the week is arranged. For residents with a learning disability or autism, communication is where we start. We learn how each person tells us what they need, in words or otherwise, and we keep routines steady, giving proper notice before anything changes. We support people to cook, shop, manage money and get out locally, because independence comes from doing things rather than from being told you could. We also pay attention to sensory matters such as noise, light and busyness, which often decide whether a day is manageable. For our older residents the emphasis is on keeping the familiar shape of a life going, with proper meals, flexible mornings and company when it is wanted. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was outstanding. We were pleased to receive it and we treat it as a standard to keep meeting rather than something to rest on. If you would like to visit, please get in touch and we will arrange it.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Mill Green. Report published 18 July 2019.
- 9 May 2019
- 6 places, 5 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found there were enough staff who knew people well to support them safely, both in the home and in the local community. Staff knew how to keep people safe from abuse and from risks that had been assessed. Medicines were given by trained, competent staff, and there were robust systems for receiving, storing, giving, recording and returning them safely.
Effective
Inspectors found the home used best practice standards and professional research to provide effective care. Staff and the registered manager collected data to share with health professionals. This led to diagnoses and health treatment, and inspectors said it gave each person a hugely improved quality of life. Staff understood the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and took the right actions to support people in line with it.
Caring
Inspectors found staff were thoughtful and compassionate towards each person. Staff used different ways of communicating with each person and could interpret what people wanted. This meant people who had little or no verbal communication were very well understood and supported.
Responsive
Inspectors found each person had a highly individualised communication and support plan. Plans set out each person's risks, needs and preferences. Staff explored and trialled new ideas for activities, and activities reflected what people preferred. People were encouraged to join in and be part of the local community.
Well-led
Inspectors found the registered manager and senior managers fostered a culture of openness and professional challenge. Quality checks were described as extremely robust and part of everyday practice. Staff and the registered manager had been recognised within the provider organisation and by the county council. They won an award as the best performing team, and the manager was a finalist for best registered manager in the county.
What people told the inspectors
Inspectors said families spoke very highly of the quality of care and of the approach of the registered manager and staff. All the relatives and professionals who gave feedback held the service in very high regard.
