Arranging and funding a care home place in the North East
Moving into residential care is rarely a decision made in isolation. It usually follows a change in health, a hospital stay, or the quiet realisation that daily life at home has become harder to manage safely. Across the North East there are 460 residential care homes to consider, and the practical steps below can help families move forward with a clearer plan.
Starting with a care needs assessment
The first port of call is a care needs assessment, arranged through the local authority social care team. The assessment looks at how someone manages personal care, mobility, medication and mealtimes, and whether the risks at home can be reduced by other means before residential care is agreed as the right step. It is free of charge and open to anyone who appears to need support, regardless of income. If a hospital discharge is involved, the assessment may be arranged more quickly through the ward team.
How costs are worked out
Once needs are agreed, a separate financial assessment looks at savings, income and property to decide whether the placement is self funded, part funded, or funded by the local authority. In England, people with capital above the upper threshold generally pay the full fee, while those below it may receive contributions. Weekly fees in the North East vary between homes and depend on the level of care required, the type of room, and whether nursing input is needed. It is worth asking each home for a written breakdown so you can compare like with like.
Nursing input and continuing healthcare
Some residents qualify for NHS funded nursing care or, in cases of complex health need, NHS Continuing Healthcare. These are assessed separately from local authority support and can significantly change what a family pays out of pocket.
Choosing the right care home in the North East
With 460 residential settings across the region, from small family run houses to larger purpose built homes, there is real variety to work through. CQC ratings across the North East include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and homes that are not yet rated. Bewick House, for example, currently holds an Outstanding rating, while many homes such as West Lodge Care Home, Pelton Grange Care Home, Murton Grange and Cramlington House are rated Good. A small number, including The Ferns Care Home and Seaton Hall Residential Home, are rated Requires Improvement, which means the provider has areas to address but is being monitored.
Reading CQC reports properly
An overall rating is a useful shortcut, but the detail matters more. Read the five key questions in the report, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and pay attention to how recently the inspection took place. A Requires Improvement rating followed by a strong action plan can sometimes reflect a home that is turning a corner, while an older Good rating may be due a fresh look.
Visiting in person
A visit tells you things a report cannot. Notice how staff speak to residents, whether call bells are answered promptly, how mealtimes feel, and whether the communal areas are being used. Ask to see a sample activities programme and a sample room. If possible, visit twice, once by appointment and once informally, so you get a rounded picture.
Matching the home to the person
Think about location for visiting family, the size of the home, whether specialist support is available for conditions such as dementia, and how end of life care is handled. A shortlist of three or four homes usually gives enough comparison without becoming overwhelming.
