Arranging and funding a care home place in the South East
Moving into residential care rarely happens in isolation. It usually follows a hospital stay, a fall, or a slow realisation that daily life at home has become unsafe. Before you sign anything, it is worth understanding how the assessment and funding process fits together, because it shapes both the choice of home and what you will pay.
Starting with a care needs assessment
Any adult who appears to need support is entitled to a free care needs assessment. This is arranged through the local authority Adult Social Care team, and a social worker or assessor will look at daily tasks, mobility, memory, medication and any risks at home. The outcome is a written summary of eligible needs, which then feeds into a support plan. If residential care is the recommended route, the assessment becomes the basis for choosing a home that can genuinely meet those needs.
How funding is decided
Once needs are agreed, the local authority carries out a financial assessment. Savings, income and property are considered against national thresholds, and the outcome determines whether the council contributes, whether you pay in full as a self-funder, or whether a personal contribution is agreed. People with health-led needs may also be considered for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is a separate route. Fees across the South East vary widely depending on the home, the room and the level of support required, so it is sensible to request a written breakdown before committing.
Typical cost context
Residential fees in the South East tend to sit above the national average, reflecting property costs and staffing pressures across the region. Homes will quote a weekly rate that usually covers accommodation, meals, personal care and activities, with extras such as hairdressing or chiropody charged separately. Ask whether the fee is fixed for a set period and how annual increases are calculated.
Choosing the right residential home in the South East
There are 1,861 residential care homes listed in the South East on Care Assura, which is a large pool to work through. The CQC rates providers as Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate, and some services are recorded as not yet rated. All four rating categories are represented in the region, alongside newer services awaiting their first inspection, so shortlisting well matters.
Reading the CQC picture
The majority of homes in the sample above are rated Good, including well-established services such as Hamilton's Residential Home, Forge House, Byfield Court, Heathfield Care Home and Fairlea. A smaller number, including Portland Road and Maple Cottage, hold an Outstanding rating. Others, such as Fleetwood House, Winchester House and Sandgate Manor, currently sit at Requires Improvement, while Welcome House - The Chestnuts is rated Inadequate at the time of writing. A rating is a starting point, not the whole story, so always read the most recent inspection report alongside it.
What to look for on a visit
A tour tells you things a website cannot. Notice whether staff greet residents by name, whether communal areas feel lived in, and whether people look occupied and comfortable. Ask about staffing ratios at night, how the home handles falls and medication, and how care plans are reviewed. If dementia support or end of life care may be needed later, check whether the home can continue to meet those needs without a further move.
Matching the home to the person
Location, size and atmosphere all matter. Some people settle better in a small home like Boldshaves Oast or The Homestead, while others prefer the busier feel of a larger provider. Proximity to family, transport links and familiar surroundings often make more difference to wellbeing than any single feature on a brochure.
