About West Hall
West Hall is a residential care home in West Byfleet for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, and we try to leave people in charge of everything else. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a problem to be managed. Families usually know a person far better than any assessment does, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually want to eat and nobody is hurried through a plate. There is somewhere pleasant to sit outside, and visitors are welcome at any reasonable time. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round properly.

Safe
People told inspectors they felt safe living at West Hall. People received the medicines they needed, and risks that had been identified had been responded to. People said there were enough staff on duty, so they did not have to wait for help.
Effective
People told inspectors they enjoyed the food and the choices they had. They were supported to live healthy lifestyles and had access to health care professionals when needed. The environment was adapted to suit people's needs and was extremely clean.
Caring
Inspectors saw a strong, visible person-centred culture that helped people to express their views. Staff were highly motivated to offer kind care. People at the end of their life and their families received outstanding end of life care from staff who were understanding and had distinctive skills.
Responsive
People's care was planned proactively with them, and staff were flexible and responsive to their individual needs. Staff took a key role in the local community and worked with services outside the home. These links helped people to achieve things they had always wanted to do, and this practice had been sustained since the last inspection.
Well-led
The vision and values were person-centred, and the registered manager had sustained the level of good practice and led by example. After the visit, CQC was made aware of a number of unwitnessed falls and a complaint, which the local authority safeguarding team was investigating. CQC said the management structure gave it assurance that full investigations would be carried out and action taken.
