Planning and Paying for Nursing Care in Surrey
Nursing homes are usually considered when medical needs have outgrown what a residential home or a package of visits can safely manage. Understanding who assesses that need, and who pays for what, is the sensible first step.
Starting with a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care can ask for an assessment, free of charge and whatever their savings. A practitioner considers what the person can still manage, what they cannot, and what clinical support is required day to day. The process begins with Surrey County Council Adult Social Care, and a relative providing regular unpaid help is entitled to an assessment of their own needs alongside it.
Nursing care and the funding that goes with it
A financial assessment then compares income and capital against thresholds set nationally rather than locally. Nursing homes carry an extra layer, because the registered nursing element of care may be funded through the health service rather than by the council or the family, and where needs are primarily clinical a separate assessment for continuing healthcare may apply. Ask any home you approach to explain in writing which parts of its fee are affected, since families are frequently quoted a headline figure that has not been adjusted.
What a place costs
Weekly fees differ considerably according to the room, the location and the level of nursing required, so ask for a written fee schedule and check what sits outside it, such as hairdressing, chiropody or trips out. Establish the notice period and how increases are handled each year. Where the council funds a place but the family prefers a more expensive home, a third party contribution is normally required, and it has to remain affordable for years rather than months.

Reading the inspection record
Ratings on this page run to Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement, with some homes still awaiting a first inspection. Check the date before anything else, because a rating may be several years old. Then read what inspectors said about nursing cover overnight, medicines management, pressure care and how the home responded to earlier findings. Those sections tell you far more about a nursing home than the headline word.
Staffing is the whole question
Ask how many registered nurses are on duty across a twenty four hour period, not simply during the day, and how often the home relies on agency nurses to fill a shift. Ask how long the current nursing team has been in post and who covers when the manager is away. A home that answers these questions precisely is usually a home that has the answers to hand for good reason.
What to notice when you visit
Go at a busy hour rather than a quiet afternoon. Notice whether residents are dressed, comfortable and spoken to by name, whether call bells are answered promptly, and whether the building smells properly clean. Ask how the home works with local GPs and district nursing teams, and how families are told when someone becomes unwell.
