East Sussex is covered on this page by 215 care homes, each registered to provide accommodation together with personal care rather than visiting support in somebody's own house. The inspection outcomes are encouraging on the whole: the great majority have been rated Good, a smaller group are currently rated Requires Improvement, and an Outstanding rating appears among them as well. Assessing what a person needs, and deciding whether public funding will meet part of the weekly fee, falls to East Sussex County Council, which makes an early approach to them worthwhile whenever cost is likely to be part of the picture. Since the difference between two homes carrying the same rating can be considerable, treat the profiles as your starting point rather than your conclusion, and read each inspection report properly before arranging a visit, so that the questions you ask on the day are shaped by what inspectors themselves saw.

- Care Home
Oak Lodge is a small residential care home in Polegate supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team reads those signs the same way. Once that is in place, life can be kept predictable enough for a person to relax, and we can spot early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available as well, for people needing short term support and for families who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here seem at ease, so please come and see.

- Care Home
We provide a home in Eastbourne for autistic adults and adults with learning disabilities. Our whole approach rests on a simple point: autistic people are not all alike, and support only works when it is built around the individual. So we spend a great deal of time learning how a person communicates, what they find intolerable, what settles them, how much warning they need before anything changes and what they actually want to do with their time. The written plan matters far less than staff who know these things properly. The house runs as a household. Everyone has their own room arranged how they like it, and the shape of the week is worked out with the people who live here rather than handed down. Predictability is treated as a serious matter here rather than a preference, so we keep staffing as settled as we can and explain changes in advance. Where somebody wants to do more, whether that is work, a course, a regular trip out or learning to manage something themselves, we work towards it at their pace. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall. We are pleased with that and conscious that a rating describes a moment rather than a guarantee. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

- Care Home
Mountside Care Home is a residential care home in Hastings providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need help with everyday life. We support people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, and people with loss of sight or hearing. The place runs at the pace of the people living in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone, given in a way that leaves somebody their privacy. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar. For people with loss of sight or hearing we adapt how we communicate, how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves, because those small changes decide whether a person is included or left on the edge of things. Families are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

- Care Home
Cumberland Court is a residential care home at St Leonards on Sea in East Sussex. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living and for people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available too, planned or at shorter notice. Most of what makes a care home good is unspectacular detail. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and as much choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. For residents with physical disabilities, our attention goes to equipment that fits properly, transfers handled safely and without embarrassment, and keeping as much independence as somebody wants. We should be plain about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have worked through the findings with our team and those areas are where our effort is concentrated at present. We would rather tell you that ourselves than have you learn it elsewhere, and we are happy to discuss what has changed and what we are still working on. Anyone considering Cumberland Court is welcome to visit on an ordinary day and ask us about it directly.

- Care Home
51a Chapel Park Road is a residential care home in St Leonards on Sea supporting older people, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Having that mix living together works better than people sometimes expect. Support is built around the individual rather than around a category, so one person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same terms. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, write it down in a form that makes sense to them, and change it when they say so. People here are involved in the running of the house as far as they want to be, from choosing meals to helping with the shopping, and we support people to get out to work, college, clubs and family. Communication gets close attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from knowing somebody well. Short respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

The Vines is a residential care home in Crowborough, East Sussex. We provide a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for those who need care for a short period or whose regular carer needs a rest. The people who live with us need different things. Many need help with personal care, moving about safely, medication and meals, and reassurance that somebody is nearby at night. We also support people living with mental ill health, and there our job is to provide a settled and predictable place to live and to work closely with community mental health colleagues so that what happens here fits with the rest of somebody's care rather than sitting apart from it. We try to keep the house feeling ordinary. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like, there is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and nobody is required to join in with anything. Visitors are welcome without appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather you judged us on how the house feels than on anything written here, so please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

Arden House Residential Care Home is a care home in Bexhill On Sea supporting older people, younger adults, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing, and people working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs. We should be open about our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, which is requires improvement. We would rather raise it ourselves. We know which areas were identified, we have a plan of work under way covering staff training and supervision, our record keeping, and how people and their families are involved in decisions, and we are glad to talk through where we have got to. The work of the home continues properly meanwhile. Support is built around the individual rather than around a label. Where somebody is working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs, consistency and an absence of judgement matter more than any technique, and we do not treat a difficult week as a failure. For people with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate. Respite stays are available. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to ask.

We are 368 The Ridge, a residential care home in Hastings, East Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults who have a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. This is a house in an ordinary street, and that is the point. The people who live here are part of the local community rather than set apart from it, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose. Support is planned one person at a time. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with cooking, laundry and shopping, with medication and appointments, and with the practical business of running a home. We also support people to get out locally, to keep up the activities they enjoy and to stay close to family and friends. Communication and routine are at the centre of good support here. Learning how a person asks for help, how they show that they are unhappy and which parts of the day need to stay the same matters more than any written policy, so we take time over it and write plans in a form the person can actually use. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we keep asking the people living here whether this feels like their own home.

Old Hastings House is a residential care home in Hastings, East Sussex. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. Help with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage themselves is protected rather than taken over. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not content with that. We have reviewed how we assess and record residents' needs, how we train and supervise our staff and how quickly we act when a resident or a relative raises a concern, and we have treated the findings as a working list rather than a verdict. Progress of that kind shows up slowly and in small things, which is why we would encourage anyone considering Old Hastings House to visit, look around properly and ask us direct questions about what has changed.

- Care Home
The Maples is a residential care home in Peacehaven. We provide care for older people and younger adults, and we offer respite and short stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to be one. What we offer is a comfortable house near the coast where people are properly looked after, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures and keep the routines they have always kept. That begins with asking. When somebody moves in we want to know their history, their preferences, their worries and how they like their day to run, and we write it down so that every member of staff knows it. It continues with small things done reliably. Meals people actually want, help offered discreetly, laundry back where it belongs, a hairdresser when it is wanted, the garden used when the weather allows. Families are part of it. Visitors come and go through the day, can stay for a meal, and are kept properly informed rather than telephoned only when something has gone wrong. Peacehaven and the surrounding area are home for most of our residents, and we support people to keep up with the friends, clubs and churches they have always had. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home, ideally without arranging it first.

5 High Beech Close is a small residential home in St Leonards on Sea. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults and older people, and we offer respite stays. Being small is the point. This is a house rather than a unit, and it is run with the people who live in it. Meals, shopping, laundry, what goes on the walls and how the household works are all decisions people take part in, and support is built around what somebody wants from their life rather than a timetable that suits the rota. That might mean help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and flag changes well in advance, because unexpected change is usually the hardest part of living anywhere. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them well. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand and stay briefly before committing to longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Our home at Jerome Close in Eastbourne is a small residential house supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. It is a house in an ordinary street, which is exactly what we want it to be. Keeping the place small means everyone knows each other properly, the atmosphere stays calm, and staff notice quickly when somebody is not themselves. People choose how their own room looks, join in with the shopping and cooking if they want to, and have a genuine say in how the household is run. Routines are built around the individual, including the ones that need to stay exactly the same from one day to the next, because predictability is often what allows a person to relax enough to try something new. We agree support with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, whether that is speech, signing, pictures or something else, and we learn it properly rather than guessing. Getting out into Eastbourne is part of ordinary life here, whether that means a regular activity during the week, seeing family, or a trip that has become a fixture. Respite stays are available for people who need a short break or whose family carers do. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Ashcroft House is a residential care home in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. We support adults who are autistic or who have a learning disability and adults living with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our aim is an ordinary life with the right support around it. People choose how their day runs, join in with cooking and shopping if they want to, have their own room treated as their own and get out into the town rather than spending life indoors. Support with personal care, medication, meals, money and appointments is given in a way that protects independence rather than quietly replacing it. Understanding how each person communicates is central to what we do. Someone who cannot easily say what hurts or what has upset them relies on us to notice, so we take the time to learn the signs, we record what we learn and every member of staff works to it. Warning before a change of plan, and patience when a day goes wrong, prevent far more distress than any response afterwards. Relatives are welcome and we would much rather hear a concern early. We will tell you honestly what we are doing about it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We at Nightingales Residential Care Home are proud to offer warm, person centred residential care in the historic market town of Lewes, East Sussex. Nestled within the rolling South Downs countryside, our home provides a welcoming sanctuary for older people seeking comfort, companionship, and dependable support in familiar surroundings. Our setting in the BN postcode area places us within easy reach of Lewes town centre, with its charming streets, traditional shops, and beautiful green spaces. The South East location means families visiting from across Sussex and beyond can travel to see their loved ones with relative ease, whilst residents benefit from the calm, characterful atmosphere that this corner of England is so well known for. We aim to make our home feel just that, a home, where residents can settle, relax, and continue to enjoy life with dignity. Our care is tailored to support older people, including those living with physical disabilities and those with visual or hearing impairments. For residents, this means our team takes time to understand individual needs, communication preferences, and daily routines, adapting the way we offer support so that each person feels truly heard and valued. For families, it means reassurance that mobility challenges, sensory needs, and the everyday details that matter most are carefully considered. Whether a resident requires gentle encouragement, practical assistance with daily living, or a quiet companion during the afternoon, our approach is centred on respect, kindness, and genuine human connection. We believe that small details make the biggest difference, a favourite chair by the window, a familiar piece of music, a friendly conversation over a cup of tea. Our team works closely with residents and their loved ones to build a care plan that reflects each person's life story, preferences, and aspirations. Following our most recent CQC inspection in June 2025, our home received an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We were pleased that inspectors recognised our strengths in being Effective and Caring, both rated Good, which reflects the warmth, compassion, and skill of our team in supporting residents day to day. We acknowledge the areas identified for further development, particularly in being Safe, Responsive, and Well led, and we are wholeheartedly committed to making the improvements needed. Transparency matters to us, and we welcome open conversations with families about the steps we are taking to strengthen every aspect of life at our home. If you are exploring residential care options in Lewes for an older relative or loved one, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the care, thought, and emotion behind that journey. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about daily life at Nightingales, and arrange a visit so you can experience the atmosphere of our home for yourself. Whatever your circumstances, please know that you are not alone, and we are here to help you find the right path forward with confidence and peace of mind.

Prideaux Manor is a residential care home in Polegate, East Sussex, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution and we put effort into keeping that true. People here get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. There is company and activity for those who want it and no obligation at all for those who would rather have a quiet corner and a book. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we hold to a steady routine and familiar staff, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to make sense of. Glenmuir House is a residential care home in St Leonards on Sea. We support older people who need help with daily living, including people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we take respite bookings for families needing a short break or a period of extra support after illness. We aim to feel like a house rather than an institution. People rise when they wake, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, choose how the day goes and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Mealtimes are something to look forward to, and visitors are welcome through the day without arranging it first. Being by the sea is part of the appeal for a good many of our residents, and we make use of it. Getting out, even briefly, does more for most people than anything that happens indoors. Where sight or hearing has become restricted, small practical adjustments make a real difference to how independent somebody feels, and we treat that as part of the job rather than an afterthought. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are considering residential or respite care in this part of East Sussex, please arrange to come and look round. Visiting tells you far more than any description can.

Lydfords Care Home is a residential care home in Lewes, and most of the people who live with us have come from East Sussex and the villages round about. We support older people, including many living with dementia, and we also support younger adults whose needs mean that living alone is no longer safe or comfortable. What we try to offer is continuity. People who move into a care home have usually just lost a great deal, whether that is their own front door, their independence or a partner. The least we can do is make sure that the small things carry on. If someone has taken two sugars in their tea for sixty years, that is worth knowing. If a person was always an early riser, we will not be waking them at eight because it suits a rota. For those living with dementia, we work to keep the house calm and familiar, with the same faces as far as we can manage, and we take the time to understand what someone is telling us even when the words have become difficult. Families often know things we could never guess, and we rely on them. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. In the meantime, the honest invitation is to come and look at us, speak to the people who live here and judge us on what you see.

Whatever brings someone through our door, we aim to make them feel at home from the very first day. Our team takes the time to get to know each person properly, understanding not just their care needs but their preferences, routines, and the things that matter most to them. We believe good care is built on real relationships and genuine respect, and that shows in the way we go about our day to day work. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the consistency and thoughtfulness our staff bring to their roles. That said, we never see a Good rating as a reason to stop improving. We regularly reflect on how we do things and listen carefully to feedback from the people we support, their families, and our staff. Linden Cottage is the kind of place where people are encouraged to live as independently as possible, to pursue the activities they enjoy, and to feel safe and valued. If you are considering care for yourself or someone you love and would like to find out more about whether we might be the right fit, we would be very happy to have a conversation. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We at Greensleeves are proud to offer warm, person centred residential care in the welcoming coastal town of Eastbourne, East Sussex. As an established residential care home, we provide a true home from home for older people and adults with learning disabilities or autism, set within a community known for its gentle pace, sea air and friendly spirit. Our location in the BN postcode area places us within easy reach of Eastbourne's parks, seafront and local amenities, making visits from family and friends straightforward and enjoyable. The South East setting offers a peaceful backdrop for daily life, and our home has been thoughtfully arranged to feel comfortable, familiar and safe, the kind of place where residents can settle quickly and feel a genuine sense of belonging. The care we offer is shaped around the individual. For older people, this means compassionate residential support with the everyday tasks that can become more challenging over time, alongside companionship, encouragement and respect for the routines and preferences that make each person who they are. For adults living with a learning disability or autism, our approach is built on understanding, patience and consistency, helping each resident to live as independently as possible whilst receiving the right level of support. In practice, this means listening carefully to residents and families, planning care collaboratively, and celebrating the small daily achievements that matter most. Families often tell us that what reassures them most is the atmosphere they sense when they visit. We work hard to create a home where kindness comes first, where staff take the time to truly know each resident, and where dignity and choice underpin everything we do. Whether it is sharing a cup of tea, joining in a favourite activity, or simply sitting quietly together, we believe meaningful moments are the foundation of good care. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our Care Quality Commission rating of Good across every domain assessed, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well led. For families, this independent recognition offers reassurance that the care provided here meets the standards expected by the regulator, and that our team is dedicated to maintaining and building on that quality every day. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the questions, hopes and worries that come with it. If you are exploring options for a loved one in Eastbourne or the wider East Sussex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions and arrange a visit when the time feels right. We would be delighted to welcome you, share more about life at Greensleeves, and help you decide whether our home could be the right next chapter for someone you love.

We at Ashgrange House are proud to offer warm, personalised residential care in the heart of Eastbourne, East Sussex. As a dedicated residential care home, we provide a safe, welcoming environment where older people and adults with a range of support needs can truly feel at home along the South Coast. Our setting in Eastbourne places us within one of the South East's most beloved coastal towns, where the gentle pace of seaside life, mature green spaces, and community spirit create a naturally calming backdrop for later life. Residents benefit from the familiar comforts of a genuine home rather than an institution, with communal spaces designed for connection, quieter corners for reflection, and an atmosphere shaped by kindness and respect. Our specialisms are broad because we understand that no two residents arrive with the same story. We offer older person care for those seeking long term support in a nurturing setting, and residential care built around dignity, independence, and daily wellbeing. We also welcome adults living with learning disabilities and autism, taking time to understand each person's preferences, routines, and communication style so they feel genuinely seen. For residents living with mental health conditions, we provide steady, compassionate support that prioritises stability and emotional security. Our respite care option offers families a trusted place for short stays, whether that is following a hospital discharge, during a family holiday, or simply to give a loved one a change of scene whilst their regular carer takes a well deserved break. In practice, this breadth of experience means families can expect thoughtful, person centred support. We take time to learn what matters most to each resident, from favourite meals and morning routines to the small rituals that make a day feel meaningful. Loved ones are warmly involved in care planning, and open communication with families is something we hold as a genuine priority rather than a formality. Our most recent CQC inspection, carried out on 27 May 2021, awarded us an overall rating of Good. Inspectors rated us Good across the Safe, Effective, Caring, and Responsive domains, which reflects the everyday commitment of our team to keep residents secure, well supported, treated with warmth, and listened to as individuals. The Well led domain was rated Requires Improvement, and we take that feedback seriously as a clear focus for ongoing development. We believe transparency about our journey matters, and we continue to work on strengthening leadership and governance so that the quality residents experience each day is fully matched by the systems supporting it. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions that come with it. If you are exploring options in Eastbourne for a parent, partner, relative, or friend, we would be genuinely glad to hear from you. Please get in touch to arrange a visit, ask questions, or simply talk through what your loved one needs. At Ashgrange House, our door, and our hearts, are open.

Here at Woodcote, we are a residential care home nestled in the heart of Mayfield, East Sussex, and we are proud to call this corner of the High Weald our home. The village setting gives us a warmth and familiarity that we think makes a real difference to the people who live with us and the families who trust us with their care. We support adults with a range of needs, with particular experience in learning disabilities and autism. We also offer respite care, which gives individuals the chance to stay with us on a shorter term basis, whether that is to provide a break for family carers or simply to try something new. Whatever brings someone through our door, we aim to make sure they feel genuinely welcome and at ease from the very first day. We take the time to get to know each person properly, understanding not just their care needs but their routines, interests, and the things that matter most to them. Good care, in our view, is built on consistency and honest relationships, and we work hard to make sure the people living here feel respected and heard. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good. We see this as recognition of the everyday effort our team puts in, though we are always looking at how we can do better and improve the experience for everyone in our care. If you are considering Woodcote for yourself or someone you care about, we would warmly encourage you to get in touch or come and visit us. Prideaux House is a residential care home in Eastbourne. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, along with respite and short stays. We would rather be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and anybody considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still to be put right. We would think less of a family that did not ask. What we are trying to offer is not complicated, though it is hard to do consistently. A comfortable house where older people are looked after properly, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. That begins with asking how somebody has always lived and then actually working that way rather than fitting people to a routine that suits the rota. Dementia care here depends on familiarity. We keep staffing as steady as we can, we do not hurry anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what reassures a particular person, since it is rarely the same for two of them. Families often find this stage hard, and we try to give them honest information rather than comfortable reassurance. Visitors are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place for yourself.

Lawn Court is a residential care home in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. We look after older people who need help through the day, people who have managed a mental health condition for many years, and some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about where that line falls. What we do is the daily work of helping somebody wash and dress, take their medicines, eat properly, move about safely and stay connected to other people. Done well that is a skilled job and it depends almost entirely on whether staff know the person, so keeping our team is where most of our effort goes. Where somebody has lived with a mental health condition for a long time, the work is mostly patient and ordinary. Keeping a routine steady when they are unwell. Noticing early when things are sliding and saying so without making a crisis of it. Backing off when somebody is well and wants to get on with their own life. Bexhill is a quiet seaside town and the air off the Channel does people good, so we get residents outside whenever the weather is on our side. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Call in and see us, with or without warning.

Eastbourne Road is a small care home run by The Regard Partnership. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Being a small house is the point rather than a limitation. The week can be arranged around a handful of individuals instead of a rota, and people are known in detail rather than in general. That matters most when something is wrong, because staff who know somebody well can tell the difference between a bad mood and pain, between boredom and distress, and between wanting to be left alone and quietly withdrawing. The people living here have a genuine say in the ordinary decisions. What is bought and cooked, how their rooms look, where they go and who comes to visit. Where somebody wants to build a skill or take on something new, we put effort behind it rather than recording it as an aim. Being by the coast means getting out is easy, and we make use of that. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

Here at Baronsmede, we provide residential care for a range of people in the heart of Crowborough, East Sussex. We support older adults, younger adults, and individuals living with a learning disability or autism, and we also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether to recover, to rest, or simply to give family members a well earned break. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will ever make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone enquires with us, we try to make the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible. We want people to feel comfortable asking questions, taking their time, and getting a genuine sense of what life here looks like before any decisions are made. Day to day, we focus on making Baronsmede feel like a real home rather than an institution. That means listening carefully to the people who live here, respecting their routines and preferences, and making sure they feel known as individuals rather than simply as residents. The people we support have varied needs and backgrounds, and we work hard to make sure our approach reflects that variety rather than applying a one size fits all model. We were pleased to receive a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission at our most recent inspection. That outcome reflects the effort our whole team puts in, and it gives families an independent confirmation that the care here meets a solid standard. We remain committed to building on that and to being honest about where we can do better. Bannow Retirement Home is in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, and we are registered for both residential and nursing care. That matters more than it sounds, because it means somebody whose health declines does not automatically have to move again. The nursing comes to the person rather than the person being sent to find the nursing. We care for older people, a great many of them living with dementia, and respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours. The clinical work is detailed and unhurried, covering medicines, wounds, pain, pressure care and making sure people eat and drink enough. What no procedure can cover is noticing early when somebody is not themselves, and that rests on the same staff knowing the same residents over months. For residents with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings calm, we learn individual histories properly, and we accept that some days are harder than others without treating that as a failure. The sea air does people good, so we get residents outside whenever the weather is on our side. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and look round on a normal afternoon.

Crockstead Farm House is a care home near Lewes in East Sussex. We provide residential care for older people and also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Having residents of different ages and needs living together works better than people often expect, provided it is thought about rather than left to chance. Older residents frequently enjoy the company and the bit of liveliness, and younger residents benefit from a settled household rather than an institutional one. What makes it work is not assuming everybody wants the same things. Meals, routines, outings and how much say someone wants over their own decisions get worked out person by person. For residents with a learning disability or who are autistic, we pay attention to the environment itself. Noise, lighting, how predictable the day is, and whether there is somewhere to go when everything becomes too much. Support aims at helping people do more for themselves over time rather than at keeping things simple for staff. The countryside around us is part of the appeal, and getting out is a normal part of the week rather than an occasion. Respite stays are available for planned breaks and at shorter notice, and short stay residents are part of the household rather than guests held at arm's length. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit us.

Elm Lodge is a residential care home in Eastbourne providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We try to keep the home domestic rather than institutional. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. Some are in company from breakfast onwards and some would far rather have their own room and the window open, and neither preference draws any remark from us. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is straightforward to understand and move around in. Eastbourne is home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors from local groups, and family welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round.

Collington Park Lodge is a residential care home in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. We support older adults and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people living with a physical disability, and people with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our aim is a home that makes sense to the people in it. Surroundings that are calm and easy to read, a day with a reliable shape, and staff who know each person well enough to notice when something is wrong before it is said. Where somebody has difficulty seeing or hearing, we adapt how we communicate and keep things exactly where that person expects to find them, which saves a great deal of avoidable frustration. Help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and appointments is there for whoever needs it, given without taking over. People keep their own belongings, choose how sociable a day is going to be, and see visitors when it suits them. Families are part of this. What relatives can tell us about a person's life is often what allows us to care for them properly, so we ask early and we keep asking. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. Please come and see the home, meet people, and ask us anything you like.

Lime Tree House is a residential home in Lewes, and we look after older people who have reached the point where living alone has become harder than it used to be. We are part of the town rather than set apart from it, which means family and friends can call in easily and people who have lived locally for years still feel they are somewhere they recognise. What we offer is fairly straightforward: warm rooms, proper meals cooked on the premises, help with washing and dressing given discreetly, and staff who have the time to sit down and talk. We ask about the small preferences that often get lost when somebody moves, from what time a person likes to get up to how they take their tea, and we pass those things on so that nobody has to keep explaining themselves. Days here are not heavily organised. There is usually something going on for those who want it, and quiet corners for those who do not. Families tell us the atmosphere is what decided them, and we would rather be judged on that than on any list of facilities. We also take people for short respite stays, whether that is to give a carer at home a rest or to help somebody regain confidence after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us before you decide.

Quinnell House provides residential care in Hailsham for older people, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. Most of what makes a care home work is undramatic and daily. Getting up when you want to, food you actually want to eat, a familiar face on shift, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is where we concentrate our effort. For residents living with dementia, familiarity and a calm unhurried approach prevent far more distress than they ever cost, so we keep the day recognisable and let people do things at the pace they can manage. We would rather be plain about our inspection position than leave families to discover it elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to argue with the findings. They described genuine shortfalls, and our manager and staff team have been working through them, with tighter medicines practice, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that problems surface quickly rather than quietly. There is more to do and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are thinking about Quinnell House for somebody you love, please come and see us, ask what has actually changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here.

We are Futures, a residential care home in Lewes, East Sussex. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays. The people we support have needs that overlap in ways the usual categories do not capture. Somebody may have a learning disability, find the physical environment difficult and be managing a mental health condition as well, and support that addresses only one of those will not work for long. So we plan around the person and take the time to find out what actually helps on a good day and on a difficult one. Predictability and consistency do most of the work. Knowing what is happening, when, and with whom, and having that turn out to be correct. Familiar staff. A routine that somebody can rely on and that we protect rather than ask them to be flexible about. Choice runs through the day as far as it possibly can, and where a decision needs support we support it rather than making it. Families and advocates are involved as much as the person wants. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Frinton House is a residential care home in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, supporting adults who have a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period, which can give a family carer a proper break. The people who live here call it home, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose within it, with as much independence as they want and as much support as they need. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with cooking, laundry and shopping, with medication and appointments, and with managing money and correspondence. We also support people to get out locally, to keep up the activities they enjoy and to stay close to family and friends. Communication and routine sit at the centre of the work. Learning how a person asks for help, how they show that they are unhappy and what settles them when a day goes badly matters more than any written policy, so we take time over it and write plans in a form the person can actually use. Where someone wants more independence, we work towards it at their pace rather than ours. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here whether this genuinely feels like their own home.

We at The Hurst Residential Home offer a warm and welcoming residential care setting in the coastal town of Hastings, East Sussex. Nestled within the TN postcode area, our home provides a comfortable base where older adults can feel truly settled, supported, and valued as part of a genuine community. Our location in Hastings places residents within one of the South East's most characterful coastal towns, where sea air, local amenities, and a sense of familiar community life are all close at hand. The surroundings offer a peaceful backdrop for daily life, whilst remaining well connected for visiting family and friends who wish to spend meaningful time with their loved ones. At the heart of what we do is person centred residential care, thoughtfully tailored to each individual who chooses to make The Hurst their home. Alongside long term residential care, we also offer specialist support for adults living with mental health needs, as well as respite care for those requiring a shorter stay. For families, this means flexibility and reassurance, whether you are seeking a permanent home for a relative, a supportive environment during a period of recovery, or a trusted place to provide care whilst a primary carer takes a well earned break. Supporting residents with mental health needs is something we approach with compassion, patience, and respect for each person's individual journey. Our aim is to create an atmosphere in which residents feel safe to be themselves, encouraged to maintain their independence wherever possible, and gently supported when they need us most. Daily routines, companionship, and kind, attentive care all play their part in helping residents feel at ease. Respite care at The Hurst is designed to feel just as personal and welcoming as a longer stay. Whether a guest joins us for a short recuperative break or to allow family carers time to rest, we offer the same warmth, attention, and continuity of care that our permanent residents enjoy. Many families find that respite visits also provide a valuable opportunity to explore whether our home might be right for the future. We believe families deserve openness about quality and regulation. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Requires Improvement, with our Caring and Responsive domains both rated Good, and our Safe, Effective, and Well led domains identified as areas for further development. We take these findings seriously and view them as a clear roadmap for improvement. The Good ratings for Caring and Responsive reflect what matters most to us: that our residents feel genuinely cared for, listened to, and supported in ways that respond to their individual needs. At the same time, we are actively working to strengthen the areas highlighted by the CQC, because we believe every resident deserves excellence across every aspect of their care. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. It is rarely straightforward, and it often comes at an emotional time. Our door is always open to families who wish to visit, ask questions, meet the team, and get a genuine feel for daily life at The Hurst. We warmly invite you to get in touch, arrange a visit, and discover whether our home in Hastings might be the right next chapter for your loved one.

Webb House is a residential care home in Newhaven, East Sussex, supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism, including people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Sensory impairment alongside a learning disability changes what good support looks like, and a good deal of our practice is built around that. How a room is arranged and kept arranged. How information is given, and how much warning somebody gets before anything changes. How staff announce themselves when they come into a space. These sound like details. For the people who live here they are the difference between a world that makes sense and one that keeps ambushing them. Communication is planned around each individual rather than around a general approach, and independence here is specific and practical. Finding your own way around the house. Making your own drink. Choosing your own day and being understood when you do. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we welcome visits from families and professionals considering a place.

Grange House is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter period. Our work rests on knowing people properly. For someone living with dementia that means understanding the life they have led, the work they did, the music they know and the routines that steady them, and using that knowledge through the day rather than filing it away. For someone living with a mental health condition it means being consistent through the better weeks and the harder ones, and treating a difficult stretch as something to support rather than something that costs a person their independence. Days here follow the people who live here rather than a timetable. Some want company and something to do. Others want quiet and their own room. Both are reasonable ways to spend an afternoon. Families are welcome and we would rather they felt part of the house than treated as visitors. We want to be plain about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accept that finding and are working through the areas it identified. Please come and see us, ask about the rating directly and judge the home on what you actually find here.

- Care Home
Cumberland House is a residential care home in Hastings. We support older people and adults living with mental ill health, and we offer respite stays alongside longer term places. Supporting older people and people with mental health needs in the same home is something we have thought about properly. It works when the home is calm, when staff are consistent and when nobody is treated as a category. People here are known as individuals, with their own histories, habits and preferences, and the support is built from that rather than from a label. Day to day we help with personal care, medication, meals, appointments, paperwork and keeping in touch with family. Residents decide how to spend their time. We will encourage someone who has withdrawn to come and join in, and we will just as readily leave a person in peace when that is what they need. We work closely with community mental health teams and local GPs, and we would rather raise a concern early than wait and see. Being in Hastings, the sea is close and a change of scene is easy to arrange. Respite stays give family carers a break and can offer somebody breathing space during a difficult period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Cumberland House and ask us whatever you need to.

Alice Court Care Home is in Eastbourne. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room, their own television and a quiet word with somebody who is not in a hurry. Both are perfectly reasonable. Where someone has a physical disability we pay attention to equipment, access and the amount of help we offer. Doing too much for a person is a real loss and it creeps in easily, so we keep asking what somebody would rather manage themselves. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Being in Eastbourne, the seafront is close and a change of scene is easy to arrange. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness or hospital. Please come and look round Alice Court and ask us whatever you need to.

Here at Dalling House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Crowborough, East Sussex. Our home is a place where residents can feel genuinely settled, supported and valued as individuals, not simply as people who need care. We offer older person care, residential care and respite care, so whether someone is moving in permanently or needs a shorter stay to recover or give family members a break, we aim to make that experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible. Respite stays in particular can feel daunting for families who are uncertain about what to expect, and we work hard to ensure those shorter visits feel just as personal and attentive as longer term living. We want to be honest about where we are as a home. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we take that seriously. We have been working through the areas identified and making real, practical changes to how we operate. We believe families deserve transparency, and we would rather have an open conversation about our improvement journey than paper over it. Progress is being made and we welcome anyone to come and see the home for themselves. Crowborough is a lovely part of East Sussex and our location means residents can maintain connections to their local community, which matters enormously to peoples sense of identity and belonging as they get older. If you are considering care for yourself or a loved one, we would encourage you to get in touch and arrange a visit. Seeing a care home in person, speaking with the team and meeting current residents and their families, gives a far better picture than any description can. We would be glad to show you around and answer any questions you have.

We are Cedarwood House Care Home in Battle, East Sussex. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite bookings. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Cedarwood House for someone, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We would rather answer that fully than have it hanging over the conversation.

East Dean Grange Care Home is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, adults with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and those with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite care for planned short stays. With that range of people under one roof, running the house to a single timetable would suit nobody, so we do not try. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, where they spend their time and how much they join in with what is going on. Company and activity are offered rather than imposed, and someone who wants a quiet afternoon in their own room is not a problem to be solved. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and with the people who know them best, because the small details decide how quickly a person settles. Those details shape how we support them from the first day rather than sitting unread in a file. Dementia support runs through the whole home. We keep surroundings familiar, avoid rushing anyone, and take time to understand what settles a particular resident. Where somebody has a sensory impairment or a physical disability, we adapt how we communicate and how the home is arranged so that the building works for them. Respite stays are planned with the same thought as a permanent move. Visitors are welcome at reasonable hours and we would rather families felt at home here. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Aston House is a residential care home in Eastbourne. Those living here include older people and adults managing mental health conditions, and we are home to younger adults as well. Respite stays are part of what we do. Our work with people managing mental ill health is less about doing things for them than about helping a life keep its shape. Getting up, eating properly, taking medication, having something in the week that belongs to the person rather than to their care. A settled household of people who know you well is what makes those things sustainable. Having a range of ages under one roof means one routine will not suit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person, and we accept the answer when it is to be left alone. People here have their own space and their own routine, come and go as adults, and have a real say in how the place runs. Progress is uneven and does not run to a timetable, so we aim to be steady rather than to push. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We keep asking the people who live here what would make this a better place to be.

We are a residential care home in St Leonards on Sea, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. We are working through the points the inspectors raised, and if you are considering the home for someone close to you we will go through the report with you and answer whatever you want to ask. Please come and see the place as it really is. Talking to the people who live here, and to their families, will tell you more than we can.

Barchester Tower is a residential care home in St Leonards On Sea, East Sussex, and much of our work is with people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and respite stays. Where dementia is part of the picture it shapes the whole house rather than one wing of it. The day follows a recognisable pattern so that people are not constantly having to work out what is happening. The same familiar staff are around, because a known face does more to settle somebody than any amount of explanation. People keep their own belongings and their own habits, and we ask families early about what those habits are. Where somebody is anxious, or wants to go home, or is looking for a person who is no longer alive, we stay with them and go at their pace rather than correcting them. Alongside that we help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and eating and drinking well, with somebody nearby through the night. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us and talk to whoever is on shift.

- Care Home
Berry Pomeroy is a residential care home in Eastbourne caring for older people, with respite stays available alongside permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Much of what makes a care home good is ordinary and repeated every day. Food that people actually look forward to. Mornings that are not rushed. Staff who remember which resident wants the crossword, which one cannot bear the television on in the background, and who takes sugar. We put our effort into those details, because they are what residents experience. Residents decide how to spend their days. Some enjoy the sociable end of the house and whatever is going on, others prefer their own room, their books and a view of the garden, and both are entirely acceptable. Rooms belong to the people in them, and we encourage families to bring furniture and pictures that make a space feel like someone's own. Our team is encouraged to know residents as people, which means knowing about their working lives, their families and the places they have lived. That knowledge is what makes care personal, and it is also what helps us notice quickly when someone is unwell. Respite stays often follow a hospital admission or give a family carer a genuine rest. If you are considering care for yourself or a relative, please come and look round and take your time.

Jubilee Court provides residential care in Bexhill on Sea for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with mental health needs. We also take planned respite stays. Our aim is straightforward. People who live here should be able to carry on being themselves, with the help they need arranged quietly around them. That means choosing when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and who to spend time with, and having staff who know those preferences well enough not to have to ask twice. Practically, we help with personal care, medicines, meals, and everything involved in running the place. For residents living with dementia, we keep the day familiar and the pace gentle. Rushing somebody creates distress that then takes far longer to settle than the time saved. For residents with mental health needs, consistency and a lack of fuss matter, along with staff who notice early when somebody is less well than they were. Respite stays are worth mentioning in their own right. They give family carers a genuine break, and they let people see what we are like before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. What matters more day to day is what residents and relatives tell us, so we ask them, and we act on the answers.

Saxonwood is a residential care home in Battle, East Sussex. We are home to older people, both for the long term and for shorter respite stays when a family carer needs a rest. We set ourselves plain targets: nobody cold, nobody hungry, nobody waiting long for help, nobody hurried, and nobody organised against their wishes. We think being properly known is the difference between a home and an institution, so we put real effort into learning people's histories, habits and dislikes. Respite guests are properly welcomed rather than merely accommodated. We ask beforehand how the person likes things done, because a short stay gives us no time to learn it gradually. We pay attention to pain, including in people who cannot easily tell us about it. Unexplained agitation is usually a signal rather than a behaviour. We keep records honestly, including when something has gone wrong. A tidy account of a bad day helps nobody. Where somebody wants to take a risk, such as walking unaided or going out alone, we work out how to make it safer rather than simply saying no. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Families are welcome to arrive unannounced.

The Views is a residential care home in Rye, East Sussex, and we are a home first and a service second. People live here, and the rhythm of the house belongs to them. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, alongside older people who need residential care, and we welcome both younger adults and people later in life. Our approach is to build the support around the person's own goals, which might mean help to cook a favourite meal, to manage money, to keep in touch with family, or simply to have quiet company on a difficult day. We are not trying to make everyone fit a single routine. Rye and the surrounding countryside are part of what we offer. Getting out, whether for a walk, a coffee in town or a trip to the coast, matters as much to us as anything that happens indoors. We also provide respite care, which gives families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere familiar and welcoming. Many people who first come to us for respite return, and we take that as a fair measure of how it went. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are a residential care home in Hailsham, providing a home for older people who need some help to get comfortably through the day. We try hard to keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, get up and go to bed when it suits them, and carry on with the things they have always enjoyed. We help with personal care, mobility, meals and medication, and we try to keep the focus on what somebody can still do for themselves rather than on what has become harder. A good deal of what makes a home work well is unremarkable: staff who are the same from week to week, meals people actually look forward to, and enough time that nothing has to be rushed. Respite stays are available as well. A planned break can be what allows a family carer to keep going, and a short stay is also a gentle way of finding out whether a care home is the right step before anyone commits to it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would much rather a resident or relative raised a concern while it was still small, so we ask often and we act on what we hear. - Care Home
Quality Reliable Care is a residential home near Heathfield in East Sussex, supporting older people who need help with daily living rather than nursing care. We support residents with a physical disability and offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our aim is that people keep as much of their own life as possible when they come here. Their own routines, their own belongings, their own preferences about food and company and how the day should go, and support to carry on doing whatever they can still manage themselves. Taking over is quicker and it is rarely the right answer. For residents with a physical disability, much comes down to getting the practical arrangements exactly right and then keeping out of the way. The right equipment used properly. Moving and handling done the way that particular person prefers, because they usually know better than anyone what works for them. Enough time allowed that nothing has to be hurried. Respite guests become part of the household from the day they arrive rather than visitors passing through. For many people a short stay is their first experience of a care home, and it should be reassuring. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to come and look round, meet the people who live here, and ask whatever you would like to ask.

Arranging and funding a care home place in East Sussex
Getting the need assessed
Families who ring homes before an assessment often find themselves repeating the same conversation, so it is worth having the need recorded first. Any adult who appears to require care and support can ask for an assessment, and it is provided free of charge whatever their income or capital. The assessor examines personal care, mobility, memory, night time safety and whether support at home might still be workable. East Sussex County Council carries out these assessments and arranges funded support for anyone meeting the eligibility criteria, and a relative can begin the request on somebody else's behalf. The written outcome then guides the care plan and any decision about money.
Weekly fees and contributions
Residential care is charged as a weekly fee taking in the room, meals, laundry and personal support, although homes differ over what that figure covers. A financial assessment accompanies the needs assessment, measuring income and capital against national thresholds to establish the personal contribution. Where the council funds or part funds a place, family may be asked for a third party top up if the chosen home charges above the council rate, and that arrangement should be written down before a move. Where the need is chiefly clinical rather than social, NHS continuing healthcare is worth raising, since it is assessed and paid for through the health service. Ask each home for a written schedule showing exactly which extras sit outside the weekly fee.
Choosing between care homes in East Sussex
What the ratings can and cannot tell you
Good is the prevailing outcome across these two hundred and nine homes and covers providers such as Bevern View, Castlemaine Care Home, Ashley Gardens and Nutley Hall. A smaller group, including Dalling House, Parkgate Manor and Lynfords, are rated Requires Improvement, and their reports explain precisely what inspectors asked to be put right. An Outstanding rating is represented on this list as well. Ratings age, though, so check when each inspection took place and ask the manager what has changed since, particularly where the visit was some time ago.
What to look at when you visit
Go when the home is busy, ideally at a mealtime, and give more weight to what is happening around you than to the tour itself. Notice whether residents are up, dressed and occupied, how promptly call bells are answered, and whether staff speak to people by name and at eye level. Ask how many permanent staff are rostered on each shift, how long they have been in post and how often agency cover is used overnight. Ask plainly what happens if needs increase, because a residential home is not always registered to keep somebody who later needs nursing.
Comparing the final few
Ease of visiting matters more than families anticipate, as the placements that settle best are those relatives can reach without turning each visit into an outing. Compare what the fee includes, whether a trial stay is offered, and whether the room you were shown is the room your relative would keep. Two or three visits are usually enough to make the right choice obvious.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in East Sussex
Will East Sussex County Council fund a care home place?
It may contribute, though what is paid follows a financial assessment as well as the assessment of need. Capital and income are compared with national thresholds to decide the personal contribution towards the weekly fee. If the preferred home charges more than the council will meet, family may be asked for a third party top up. Anyone whose needs are primarily clinical should ask about NHS continuing healthcare, which the health service funds instead.
How is a care needs assessment arranged in East Sussex?
Contact East Sussex County Council adult social care and ask for one, which can normally be started online or by telephone. The entitlement applies to anyone who appears to need care and support, and there is no charge. An assessor will talk through daily routines, memory, safety at home and the help family already provides. The written outcome records eligible needs and is the basis for any funded placement.
How far in advance should we start looking?
Allow several weeks where circumstances permit, since assessments, financial checks and visits rarely align neatly. Homes with strong reputations often keep waiting lists, so visiting more than one and keeping a second choice in reserve is sensible. When a hospital discharge is driving the timing, tell the ward team and the council at once because those placements move faster. An early start also means the decision can be taken calmly.
Which care homes in East Sussex are listed here?
215 residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission in East Sussex are gathered on this page. They range from large purpose built homes to smaller houses looking after a dozen or so residents. Each entry opens onto a profile with the provider details and the published inspection rating. Comparing them side by side makes shortlisting considerably easier.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in East Sussex?
Ask how many permanent staff cover each shift, how long they have been there and how much agency cover is used. Find out how care plans are reviewed, how families are informed about falls or illness and how medicines are handled. Ask what the weekly fee includes and what is charged separately, from hairdressing to chiropody and outings. Then ask what happens if needs change, and read the latest inspection report before you decide.
What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home offers a permanent home with meals, laundry and help with personal care, staffed throughout the day and night. A nursing home provides all of that and employs registered nurses, so clinical needs such as complex wounds or feeding tubes can be met on site. The distinction matters when health needs are likely to grow, since a residential home may not be registered to meet them. Both are inspected by the Care Quality Commission under different regulated activities.
