Care Homes in East Sussex 215 care homes · 179 rated Good by CQC

East Sussex is covered on this page by 215 care homes, each registered to provide accommodation together with personal care rather than visiting support in somebody's own house. The inspection outcomes are encouraging on the whole: the great majority have been rated Good, a smaller group are currently rated Requires Improvement, and an Outstanding rating appears among them as well. Assessing what a person needs, and deciding whether public funding will meet part of the weekly fee, falls to East Sussex County Council, which makes an early approach to them worthwhile whenever cost is likely to be part of the picture. Since the difference between two homes carrying the same rating can be considerable, treat the profiles as your starting point rather than your conclusion, and read each inspection report properly before arranging a visit, so that the questions you ask on the day are shaped by what inspectors themselves saw.

    • Care Home

The Willows is a residential care home in Bexhill On Sea. We support older people alongside younger adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people needing somewhere for a short period. Supporting a mixed group well means treating everyone as an individual rather than as part of a group. Each person here has a plan built with them, covering what they want support with and what they would rather keep hold of themselves, and we check whether it still fits rather than assuming. Life here is not heavily programmed. People decide when to get up, how they spend their day and how much company they want. For the autistic people we support, we pay close attention to routine, to the sensory environment and to giving plenty of notice before anything changes. For older residents, we make sure that needing help with washing or mobility does not quietly become an excuse for deciding everything else on their behalf. Meals are prepared here and we take an interest in what people actually enjoy. Families and friends are welcome without formality. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are weighing up options along this part of the East Sussex coast, you are welcome to come and look round and talk to us.

    • Care Home

Lebrun House is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. Moving into a care home is a big change, and how the first weeks are handled makes a lasting difference. We spend time learning about a person before and after they arrive. What they did for a living, who matters to them, what they eat, when they like to wake, what makes a bad day and what settles it. That knowledge is the difference between care that fits and care that merely happens. For people living with dementia, the constants do the heavy lifting. The same faces, the same room, familiar food, music from the right decade, and staff who do not rush or contradict. Where somebody is living with a mental health condition, we work alongside community teams and families so that support stays joined up. Respite stays are available too, giving a family carer a planned break or offering somebody a period of support when they need it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would encourage you to come and see the home for yourself, meet the people who live here and ask whatever you want to ask.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Eastbourne, providing a home for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with mental health conditions. What we try to offer is steadiness. Familiar staff, a predictable shape to the week, meals people actually want to eat and somewhere a person can be left in peace when that is what they need. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines so far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be involved in whatever is going on in the house. Where somebody's mental health is unsettled, our approach is to know them well enough to see difficulty coming rather than only to react once it has arrived. That depends on staff who stay long enough to know people properly, which is why we put effort into keeping our team settled. Being near the sea is a plain advantage, and getting out for a walk or a change of view is part of ordinary life here when the weather allows. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are considering a home for yourself or someone in your family, please come and look round. Talking to the people who live here will tell you more than we can.

    • Care Home

6 High Beech Close is a small residential home in St Leonards on Sea. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays. Being small is the point. This is a house rather than a unit, and it is run with the people who live in it. Meals, shopping, laundry, what goes on the walls and how the household works are all decisions people take part in, and support is built around what somebody wants from their life rather than around a timetable that suits the rota. That might mean help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and flag changes well in advance, because unexpected change is usually the hardest part of living anywhere. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them well. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand and stay briefly before committing to anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to come and look round.

    • Care Home

Fairlight Manor is a residential care home in Peacehaven, close to the coast between Brighton and Newhaven. We support adults who need help with daily living, and a large part of our work is with people living with dementia. We also offer respite stays, which might be a planned break for a family carer, a trial before a permanent move, or a settled place to recover after a period of illness. Our approach to dementia is built on knowing the person rather than the diagnosis. We ask families to tell us about the life behind the person in front of us, the work, the marriages, the music, the animals, the habits and the dislikes, because that history is what helps us understand a restless evening or a refused meal. Routines are kept familiar, and staff are asked to slow down and go at the person's pace instead of the other way round. Beyond that, this is somewhere people live. Meals are cooked here and mealtimes are unhurried. People choose where they spend their day, whether that is in company or somewhere quiet with a view. Relatives are welcome at whatever times suit them, and we would far rather hear a worry when it first arises. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Fairlight Manor for someone close to you, come and see us on an ordinary day, meet the staff on duty and ask anything you want to.

    • Care Home

Here at St Matthew Road, we are a care home based in St Leonards On Sea, East Sussex, and we are proud to support a wide range of individuals who need care, companionship and a place they can genuinely call home. We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements, whether that is planned in advance or at short notice. The breadth of our specialisms means we can often support people whose needs are complex or have changed over time, rather than asking them to move elsewhere. St Leonards On Sea is a welcoming community, and we see ourselves as very much a part of it. We want the people who live with us to feel connected to the world around them, not removed from it. Life here is shaped around the individuals in our care, their preferences, their routines, their histories and what matters most to them day to day. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of good, which we are pleased about, though we treat it as a marker of where we are rather than where we stop. We are always looking at how we can improve the experience for residents and their families. If you are considering St Matthew Road for yourself or someone you care about, we would encourage you to get in touch and come and see us. We are happy to talk through what we offer and answer any questions you might have. Finding the right care home is an important decision, and we want to make that process as straightforward and reassuring as possible.

    • Care Home

Whitegates Retirement Home is in Hastings. We provide residential care for older people together with respite stays for those who need a short break. We do one thing and we try to do it well. There is no nursing unit here and no specialist wing. What we offer is a comfortable house where older people are looked after properly, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. That starts with asking. When somebody moves in we want to know their history, their preferences, their worries and their routines, and we write it down so that every member of staff knows it rather than only whoever carried out the assessment. It continues with small things done reliably. Meals people actually want, help offered discreetly, laundry back where it belongs, a hairdresser when it is wanted, the garden used when the weather allows. Families are part of it. Visitors come and go through the day, can stay for a meal, and are kept properly informed rather than telephoned only when something has gone wrong. Hastings and the coast are home for most of our residents, and we support people to keep up with the friends, clubs and churches they have always had. We keep in close touch with local GPs and district nurses. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home, ideally without arranging it first.

    • Care Home

Tusker House is a residential care home in Hastings, East Sussex. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We keep our work deliberately focused. Residential care for older people is what we do, and we would rather do it attentively than spread ourselves across every kind of need. Residents tell us when they like to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they prefer to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to offer reassurance when someone is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. Independence is protected wherever it exists, and company matters as much as practical help. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit and we would far rather hear a concern early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Here at Trafalgar House, we offer residential care in the heart of Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, and we take real pride in the community we have built here. We support a range of individuals, including adults with learning disabilities and autism, younger adults, and those who need short term respite care. Every person who comes through our doors has their own story, their own routines, and their own way of seeing the world, and we work hard to make sure that is respected and celebrated rather than simply managed. Respite care is something we feel strongly about. Whether someone is staying with us for a week or a little longer, we want them to feel genuinely at home, not as though they are just passing through. Families tell us how much it means to know their loved one is somewhere familiar faces and kind attention are the norm, and that matters enormously to us. For those who live with us on a longer term basis, we focus on supporting people to maintain independence wherever possible, build friendships, and take part in the things they enjoy. Life here is not about simply getting through the day. It is about having a good one. We were pleased to receive a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission at our most recent inspection. That reflects the everyday work of our whole team, and we never take it for granted. We are always looking at how we can improve, listen better, and respond to the changing needs of the people we support. If you are considering Trafalgar House for yourself or someone you care about, we would warmly encourage you to come and see us in person. Nothing tells the story of a care home quite like a visit.

St Margarets Care Home is in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We offer older people a settled, permanent home, and we also provide respite stays for those who need care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. The help people need from us is mostly practical: getting up and dressed, a bath or a shower, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. Beyond that, what matters is that this feels like somebody's home rather than a place they have been put. We have found that the residents who settle best are the ones who keep hold of their own habits, so we ask about those habits early and work around them instead of asking people to fit our routine. Days here run at a gentle pace. There is breakfast when people are ready for it, food cooked on the premises, newspapers, cards, music, visits from the hairdresser and trips out along the seafront when the weather allows. Nobody is obliged to join in with anything. Families visit as often as they like and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. St Marguerite is a residential care home in Eastbourne. We support older people who need help with daily living, and we take respite bookings for families needing a short break or for someone who needs a period of extra support after illness or a stay in hospital. We aim to feel like a house rather than an institution. People rise when they wake, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, choose how the day is spent and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Mealtimes are meant to be enjoyed rather than got through, and visitors are welcome throughout the day without arranging it first. Being by the sea is part of the appeal for a good many of our residents, and we make use of it. Getting out, even briefly, does more for most people than anything that happens indoors. When a person's needs are changing we say so early and talk it through with the family rather than arriving with a decision already taken. We would much rather have that conversation while there is still time to think it over properly. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Upperton Gardens is a residential care home in Eastbourne supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, adults with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run the house as a home rather than a unit. The people living here decide the ordinary things: what is for tea, what is on the television, what time the day starts, whether today is one for going out or staying put. Staff are here to make those choices possible, not to make them on anybody's behalf. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we support it at their pace. That might be cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling independently or keeping up a job, a course or a volunteering placement. Where a person mainly needs life to be settled and predictable, that is an equally good aim as far as we are concerned. Communication gets close attention here, because understanding a person properly is the difference between them being in charge of their own life and having it arranged around them. Where sight or hearing is restricted, small practical adjustments make a large difference and we treat those as part of the job. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay in Eastbourne, please get in touch and come and visit.

Cliff Court Care Home is a residential care home in Peacehaven, East Sussex, providing a settled home for older people who need support with daily living. We care for residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a short period, whether to give a family carer a break or to convalesce somewhere safe. What we try to offer is ordinary life, well supported. Residents decide when to get up, how to spend their time and who they want to spend it with. There are activities for those who enjoy them and no pressure at all for those who do not. Meals are prepared here and preferences are remembered, down to how someone takes their tea. Dementia care is a significant part of our work, and we approach it without fuss. We learn about each person's life, the things that comfort them and the things that unsettle them, and we use that knowledge in every interaction. Calm surroundings, familiar staff and unhurried support achieve far more than any rigid approach. Our care team know residents well enough to spot a change early, and we work closely with local GPs and community health services so that concerns are dealt with quickly. Families are welcome at any reasonable hour and we keep them properly informed. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. We would be very pleased to show you around and answer your questions.

    • Care Home

Woodlands is a residential care home in Crowborough providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit one routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out into the town, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us, including the parts we would rather not hear.

    • Care Home

We at Normanhurst Care Home offer a warm, welcoming residential care setting in the coastal town of Bexhill On Sea, East Sussex, where older people can enjoy comfortable, considered care in familiar surroundings. Our home has been thoughtfully designed to provide a calm and homely environment for those seeking long term residential care or a shorter respite stay. Set within the peaceful TN postcode area of Bexhill On Sea, our home benefits from the gentle charm of this well loved seaside community on the South East coast. The location offers residents the reassurance of a quiet, established neighbourhood whilst remaining close to the amenities, seafront and cultural life that make Bexhill such a treasured place to call home. Family members visiting from across East Sussex and beyond will find the setting both accessible and pleasant. Our specialism is caring for older people, and this focus shapes everything we do. Residential care at Normanhurst means round the clock support with the everyday tasks that can become more challenging with age, from personal care and medication to meals, mobility and simply having a kind hand nearby. We take time to understand each resident as an individual, learning their history, their preferences and the small routines that bring comfort and continuity to daily life. For families considering respite care, we provide the same standard of attentive support on a short term basis. Whether a loved one needs care following a hospital stay, whilst a family carer takes a well earned break, or as a gentle way to experience residential living before making a longer commitment, our respite stays are tailored to feel restorative rather than unsettling. Families often tell us that knowing their relative is safe and cared for allows them to rest properly themselves, which is exactly the outcome we hope for. Our approach is grounded in dignity, patience and warmth. We believe that later life should be lived with purpose and pleasure, so we encourage residents to remain as independent as they wish, to spend time with others when they enjoy company, and to have quiet space when they prefer solitude. Small kindnesses, familiar faces and unhurried conversations matter just as much to us as the practical elements of care. The Care Quality Commission has rated Normanhurst Care Home as Good overall, with a Good rating across all five inspection domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well led. For families, this consistent picture offers meaningful reassurance. It reflects a home where residents are protected from harm, where care is delivered in line with best practice, where kindness and compassion are evident in day to day interactions, where support is shaped around each person's needs, and where the leadership of the home is trusted and capable. Choosing a care home for someone you love is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. We warmly invite you to get in touch with us to learn more about life at Normanhurst Care Home, to ask any questions you may have, or to arrange a visit so you can experience the atmosphere of our home for yourself. Whatever stage of the journey you are at, we are here to listen, to guide and to help you find the right way forward.

The Well House is a residential care home in Hailsham, East Sussex. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carer needs one. We will start with our last inspection rather than leave you to find it. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We accepted the findings and worked through them with the team. The effort has gone into the things that affect the people living here directly, which are safe medication practice, keeping staffing consistent so people are supported by workers who know them well, and making sure that when a resident, a relative or an advocate raises something it reaches a manager and gets a proper answer. What we are working towards is unchanged. Everyone here has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy and what they want their week to contain. People go out locally, keep up activities and see their families. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure the whole team knows. Where someone becomes distressed we look for the cause, and any restriction on freedom is agreed properly and reviewed. Families, advocates and commissioners are welcome to visit and see the house as it is now.

    • Care Home

Crowborough Lodge Residential Care Home is a care home in Brighton supporting older people and younger adults. We are a residential home, so life here is domestic rather than clinical. The day is made of meals worth sitting down to, company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not, familiar routines, visitors at whatever hour suits them, and time outside as a normal part of the week. Help with washing, dressing, medication and moving about fits around that instead of setting its shape. Our approach begins with somebody's life so far. What the work was, who the people are, what a normal week used to look like, what they have never been able to abide. Care planned from that fits the person, and it makes a considerable difference to how settled somebody becomes early on, which tends to shape everything that follows. We try hard to keep real choice in the day. People get up when it suits them, sit where they like, eat what they actually want and see visitors when they wish. For younger adults we are careful that the week contains things belonging to that person's life rather than a general programme designed for somebody much older. Respite stays are available, giving a family carer a properly planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to visit without an appointment, and we would rather you came on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

Rosebery House is a residential care home in Eastbourne. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we welcome respite guests alongside people moving in for the longer term. What we offer is fairly simple and we would rather describe it honestly than dress it up. A comfortable home, staff who are around and who know people well, help with the things that have become difficult, and a day that belongs to the person living it. People choose when to get up, what to eat, whether to join in with what is going on and whether they would rather be quiet. Staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, and they do it without making a performance of it. For people living with dementia we work on familiarity above all. The same staff, a day with a steady rhythm, and time to respond properly when somebody is confused or distressed. We ask families to tell us about a person's history because it is usually the key to understanding what they need in the moment. We know that moving a relative into a care home is a decision most families agonise over, so we try to make the early weeks as steady as possible, keeping in touch and being straightforward when something needs discussing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home, meet the team and ask us whatever you want to know.

Ashring House is a residential care home in Lewes, East Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite stays for people who need a place for a shorter period. This is a house where people live their own lives rather than a setting where things are done to them. People choose how their rooms look, take part in shopping, cooking and keeping the place going as much as they want to and are able to, and get out to what they enjoy in Lewes and around. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, that goes into the support plan rather than at its edges. The work is won in detail. How much noise a room holds. Whether a change of staff or plan needs flagging several days ahead. Which way of communicating genuinely reaches a person, whether that is speech, symbols, writing or simply unhurried time. Where somebody has a physical disability, we make sure equipment and layout help them do things for themselves rather than getting in the way. We keep the staff team consistent, train people to notice early signs of distress and prevent it, and work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors and referrers are welcome to come and see the house.

Here at Bevern View, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Lewes, East Sussex. Our home supports people with a range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements. We are proud to have received a rating of "good" from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our team puts in every day to make sure the people living here are safe, happy and well supported. That rating matters to us, but what matters more is that the people in our care feel at home, feel listened to, and feel respected. We understand that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is one of the most significant decisions a family can face. We do not take that lightly. From the moment someone first gets in touch with us, we try to make the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible. We take time to understand each person as an individual, learning about their preferences, routines and the things that bring them enjoyment. Life at Bevern View is built around the people who live here. We work hard to support independence wherever we can, and we involve residents in decisions about their own care and their daily lives. Our team is experienced in supporting people with quite complex needs, and we work closely with healthcare professionals and families to make sure everyone receives the right level of support. If you would like to find out more about what we offer, or to arrange a visit, we would love to hear from you. We are always happy to answer questions and show you around our home.

Ponbay Lodge is a residential care home in Hastings, East Sussex. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. The care we give is residential rather than nursing. Staff are here day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For most people that combination works well and leaves their independence largely intact. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to make sense of will settle somebody more reliably than any activity programme. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what helps us understand them when words become difficult. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw. Hastings is a good place to be, with the sea close by. Respite and short stays are available. Please ring us if you would like to look round Ponbay Lodge.

Sunnyhill Residential Care Home is in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We are a permanent home to older people, many of whom are living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. We help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, eating and drinking well, and having somebody nearby through the night. Where dementia is part of the picture it shapes the whole house rather than one wing of it. We keep the day recognisable, keep familiar staff around people, let residents hold on to their own belongings and habits, and sit with somebody who is upset instead of trying to talk them out of it. Food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the seafront is close enough for a trip out, and families visit whenever they can and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Choosing a care home is a hard thing to do, so please come and visit, more than once if that helps, and talk to whoever is on shift.

Seaford Head Retirement Home is a residential care home in Seaford, East Sussex. We provide a home for older people, including many living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help somebody find their feet again after a spell in hospital. We would rather be judged on ordinary things than on anything grand. Knowing how everybody likes their tea. Remembering which chair belongs to whom. Understanding who wants company from breakfast onwards and who would much rather be left with a newspaper. Helping somebody up when they wake rather than when it suits a rota. We ask about these preferences, write them down and expect them to be followed, because that is most of what makes a place feel like home instead of an institution. Dementia support is a large part of our work. Steady routines, familiar faces and patience do more good than anything else, along with a genuine effort to understand what somebody is telling us when words have become difficult. Families are welcome whenever it suits them and we keep in touch openly rather than only ringing when there is a problem. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are actually looking for. • Care Home

The Wheelhouse is a residential home in St Leonards on Sea supporting younger adults. We are a small house, which is deliberate, because it keeps things calm and means staff know everybody here properly rather than in passing. The people who live with us are at a stage of life when they should be building something, not winding down, and we try to support that. Everyone has a say in how the house runs, in what is cooked and in how their own room looks. We start from what somebody already manages and work outwards, whether that is cooking, handling money, travelling independently or keeping up with friends and family. Support is agreed with each person in a way they can follow, and staff are expected to work to that rather than to a general house routine. Where routines need to stay exactly the same to keep somebody settled, we respect that without making an issue of it. Being near the sea and close to the town means getting out is easy, and we arrange whatever support makes that possible while staying out of the way when it is not needed. We also offer respite stays, which give family carers a break and give the person coming to stay a change of scene. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Barclay House in Seaford, East Sussex, is a residential home supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism, including people with a visual or hearing impairment, people with physical disabilities and people managing mental health conditions. Sight loss alongside a learning disability changes what good support looks like, and a good deal of our practice is built around that. How a room is arranged, how information is given, how much warning somebody gets before something changes, how staff announce themselves when they come into a space. These sound like details. For the people who live here they are the difference between a world that makes sense and one that keeps ambushing them. We support people to do as much for themselves as they want to and are able to, and we plan communication around each individual rather than around a general approach. Independence here is specific and practical. Finding your own way around the house, making your own drink, choosing your own day. Respite stays are available. Roselands Residential Home is in Rye, providing residential care for older people who can no longer manage comfortably on their own. We are a small home and have no wish to be anything else, because it means the team genuinely know the people who live here, their routines, their families and what makes a day go well or badly. Our approach is straightforward. People keep their own habits, their own belongings and as much independence as they want. Some are up early and busy, others prefer a slow start and a quiet sitting room, and both are perfectly reasonable. Meals matter a great deal here, and so does the ordinary company of the house, so we put real effort into both. Respite stays are available too, whether somebody needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a genuine break. We plan short stays as carefully as a permanent move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is whether people who live here seem settled and whether relatives feel able to raise something with us early. We take time to get to know each person, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what matters to them day to day. We are a residential care home in Eastbourne supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We think a good home is one where the people living in it are genuinely in charge of the ordinary things. What is for tea, what time the music goes on, whether today is a day for going out or a quiet one in. Staff are here to make those choices possible rather than to manage them away, and to keep the house predictable enough that nobody has to brace for surprises. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we support it steadily and without fuss. That might be cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling independently, or keeping up a job, a course or a volunteering placement. We go at the person's pace rather than one that suits our paperwork. Communication gets real attention here. A number of the people we support do not rely on speech, and understanding somebody properly is the difference between them running their own life and having it arranged for them. Eastbourne is on the doorstep and people here use it, keeping up the interests and friendships that were theirs before they moved in. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay, please get in touch and come and visit.

Priory Egerton Road is a residential care home in Bexhill On Sea, East Sussex. We support older people and younger adults with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays alongside longer placements. We are a house rather than a unit, and we work to keep that distinction real. People here have their own rooms and their own routines and a genuine say in how the household runs, from meals to the shape of the week. For many people arriving with us, simply having somewhere settled and unhurried to be is most of what helps. What we provide is stability and attention: support with medication and appointments, help with the practical parts of the day, and staff who are around, familiar and quick to notice when somebody is finding things harder than usual. Beyond that we follow the person's lead. People come to us at very different points, and progress does not run to anybody else's timetable. We work alongside community mental health teams, social workers, GPs and families. Where somebody is working towards more independent living, we support that in practical steps, from cooking and budgeting to travel and managing appointments, at their pace rather than ours. People here are encouraged to keep a life outside the house as well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and going at their pace rather than the rota's. Little Acorns provides residential care in Eastbourne for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution, and most of what we do is ordinary. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want, keeping an eye on health, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents get up when they choose, spend their time as they wish, keep their own things around them and have visitors whenever it suits. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable shape to the day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. For residents with mental health needs, consistency and a lack of fuss count for a great deal, along with staff who notice early when somebody is less well than they were. Where somebody has a physical disability, we agree together how they want to be helped. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest and let people try us without any longer commitment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives what they think, and we act on the answers.

    • Care Home

Rodina House is a residential care home in Eastbourne. We look after older people who have reached the point where living alone has become more of a struggle than a pleasure, and our aim is to take away the difficulty without taking away the person. Life here is meant to be ordinary. People get up when they wake, eat food they actually enjoy, and spend their days as they choose, whether that is in company or quietly with a newspaper. We would rather shape our routine around the people living here than ask everybody to fall in with a timetable that suits the building. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would far rather have relatives in and out as part of ordinary life than visiting formally. We also offer respite stays. Sometimes a family carer needs a fortnight to rest properly, and sometimes somebody needs support for a few weeks after illness or a spell in hospital before going home again. Either way we settle people in rather than treating them as temporary. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. The question we ask ourselves more often is whether somebody looks settled and content a month after moving in, because that is the real test. If you would like to look round, please ring and come at a time that suits you.

    • Care Home

Shandon House is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We provide a home for older people and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help somebody find their feet again after a spell in hospital. Residents keep their own furniture and photographs and decide how their days run. Some want conversation and activity from early on. Others want privacy and a quiet afternoon, and neither needs justifying to us. Families are welcome whenever it suits them, and we keep in touch openly rather than only ringing when there is a difficulty. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are actually looking for, and we keep checking the detail rather than assuming it will hold on its own. If you are considering a care home in Eastbourne for someone close to you, please come and look round and ask us anything you like.

Windlesham Manor is a residential care home in Crowborough, East Sussex. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the grounds get used when the weather allows, and families visit whenever they can and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Choosing a care home is a hard thing to do, so please come and visit, more than once if that helps, and talk to whoever is on shift. That will tell you more than anything we can write here.

We are a residential home in Hastings supporting adults with a range of needs. The people who live here include younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. The house is run as a household rather than a service. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them. For adults who have often had decisions taken on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is central to what we are trying to do. Support is arranged around the individual rather than around a category. For some the priority is staying well and having staff nearby who know them well enough to notice when things are becoming difficult. For others it is about doing more: work, college, volunteering, managing money with a hand from us, or getting out regularly and keeping up with family. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can and explain changes before they happen. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Collington Park Lodge is a residential care home in Bexhill on Sea, supporting older people and younger adults from across East Sussex, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. We are a home rather than an institution, and the test of that is whether the ordinary days are any good. So that is where our attention goes. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Somebody awake at night. Enough going on in the house to give the day shape, with nobody obliged to join in. For residents with a physical disability, getting about matters enormously. The right equipment, accessible bathrooms and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move are the difference between living here and being parked here. Losing mobility unnecessarily is not something we accept quietly. Where dementia is part of someone's life we work on familiarity rather than correction. The same faces, an unhurried pace, and enough knowledge of a person's history to find a way in when they are distressed. Relatives hold most of that history and we ask for it early. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see the home, ideally unannounced, and talk to the people who already live here.

Southdown Housing Association at 28 Southdown Road in Seaford is a small residential care home. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose regular carer needs one. This is a house on an ordinary road and we run it as a home rather than a unit. There are few of us, which means the people supporting you know you properly rather than reading your details off a form. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings and a say in how the house is run, from the shopping list to what happens at the weekend. Support is planned with each person in a form they understand, covering how they like to be helped, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want to be doing with their time. People go out into Seaford and along the coast, keep up college, work, clubs and family contact, and we support that rather than tidy it away for our own convenience. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure everyone supporting them knows. Where someone becomes distressed we look for the cause, and any restriction on freedom is agreed properly and reviewed. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families and advocates are welcome to visit.

The Chase Rest Home is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We support older people who need help with daily life and adults with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays for people who need residential care for a short period. We will put the inspection first because you should not have to hunt for it. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement at our most recent inspection. We did not dispute the findings. The work since has focused on what residents actually feel day to day, which is safe and accurate medication practice, consistent staffing so people are cared for by a team that knows them, and making sure a concern raised by a resident or relative reaches a manager and receives a proper answer. Otherwise the home runs around the people in it. Residents choose when to get up, what to eat and how they spend their time, and rooms are furnished with their own belongings. Where somebody has mental health needs, we agree in advance what a difficult period looks like for them and what they would like us to do, so nobody is improvising at the worst moment. Health needs are managed with local GPs and community teams, and we contact families early rather than late. Please come and visit, ask us about the inspection directly and judge the home as it is now.

Saffrons Care Home is a residential care home in Eastbourne, East Sussex, providing a home for older people who need support with everyday living. Residents come to us for all sorts of reasons. For some, managing a house had become too much. For others, a fall or an illness changed what was realistic. Whatever the route here, our aim is that people come to think of this as home. They bring their own belongings, keep their own routines and decide how their days are spent, while our staff quietly look after what has become difficult, from personal care and medication to meals and laundry. We support people living with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. In both cases it is the practical details that matter, from how a room is arranged and what equipment is to hand, to adapting how we communicate so that nobody is left out of what is going on around them. Being rushed is one of the quickest ways to lose your dignity, and we try hard not to let that happen here. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or somebody needs support for a few weeks after being unwell. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to see Saffrons, please ring us and arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

We are a residential care home in Bexhill On Sea, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite stays where a short break is what is needed rather than a permanent move. What we run is a house where people live their own lives with support, not a place that arranges their lives for them. That distinction sounds obvious and it is easy to lose, because doing things for people is nearly always faster. We would rather somebody made their own breakfast slowly than had it made for them, and how much a person can manage without us is one of the better tests of whether we are doing this properly. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, what they need from their surroundings and what turns a manageable day into a hard one. Change is handled carefully, with notice and explanation, because a week that keeps its shape is what makes coping possible for some of the people who live here. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved. Families usually know a person better than any assessment does, and we would rather ask than assume. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are a family member or a professional thinking about a placement or a short break, please get in touch and we will talk it through openly, including telling you if somewhere else would suit a person better.

People get up when they wake, eat food they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose, in company or quietly on their own. Good dementia care is largely a matter of unremarkable things done consistently, familiar faces, meals at the times someone expects them, routines that hold together, and staff with enough time to let a conversation go at its own pace. We would rather fit our day around a person than ask a person to fit ours. Families are welcome whenever they want to come. We also offer respite stays, whether to give a family carer a proper rest or to support somebody through a period of recovery after illness or a stay in hospital. 1 Johnson Close is a small residential care home in St Leonards on Sea. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, older people who need residential care, and younger adults, and the size of the house is central to how it works. In a home this small everybody knows everybody, changes get noticed quickly, and nobody becomes a case rather than a person. People living here have their own rooms, their own things and a genuine say in how the household runs. We take time to learn how each person communicates and what matters to them, because support that is not built on that is only supervision. From there we look at what somebody wants from their week, whether that is work or college, seeing family and friends, getting out locally, or simply a home that feels properly theirs. We also offer respite stays, which give families a rest and give the person staying a change of company with support they can rely on. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We keep our own checks going between inspections, because standards are held in the ordinary running of a house rather than on inspection day. • Care Home

The Seagulls is a care home in Brighton providing residential care for older people and for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Some of our residents are living with dementia, we support younger adults, and we offer respite stays. A house with that mix of people cannot be run on one routine and we do not attempt it. What we hold in common is simple enough: nobody should have to bend themselves to fit the building. Meals, bedtimes, help with washing and dressing, going out, staying in, visitors at odd hours. All of it works better arranged around the person. Where dementia and a learning disability occur together, which is more common than people expect, care needs to be patient and consistent rather than ingenious, and the team has to know the individual well enough to spot changes early. Keeping staff for the long term is therefore the thing we work hardest at. Brighton is a good city to live in and we make sure residents are part of it rather than observers of it. Getting out, keeping friendships going and seeing family are treated as part of the support. Respite stays are prepared with visits beforehand. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Come and see the house on a normal day and talk to the people who live here.

High Broom Care Home is a residential home in Crowborough, East Sussex, caring for older people, including people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it, and we try to be clear about what it means. A rating describes how a place was found to be over a period of time. It is not a promise about next month. It was earned by staff doing ordinary things carefully and repeatedly, and it holds only while they carry on doing them. Those things are not mysterious. Knowing each person properly, including the parts of their life that have nothing to do with care. Helping in a way that protects somebody's dignity. Noticing early when a person is unwell or unsettled. Making mealtimes something to look forward to. Adapting how we communicate where sight or hearing is affected. Being honest with families, particularly when something has gone wrong. Respite stays are available. Anyone thinking about a move is very welcome to visit, more than once if it helps.

    • Care Home

Autism and Aspergers Care provides residential care in Eastbourne for adults with learning disabilities and autism, and we also offer planned respite stays. Supporting autistic adults well depends on getting the particulars right rather than applying a general approach. How a person communicates, what makes an environment bearable or unbearable, how much notice they need before anything changes, which parts of the day they would rather handle alone, and what tells us somebody is becoming overwhelmed are all things we learn from the person and from the people who know them best. We do not expect anybody to adapt to us. Predictability matters enormously here, so we keep the shape of the day steady and we prepare properly and in good time for the changes that cannot be avoided. We pay attention to the environment itself, because noise, light and the number of people about can make the difference between a manageable day and a distressing one. Beyond that, the people who live here are adults with their own interests and plans, and we support them to keep up with family and friends and to get to the activities, groups, work or education they care about. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit and spend time with the people who live here.

    • Care Home

19 Alexandra Road in St Leonards on Sea is a small residential care home supporting older people and adults living with learning disabilities and autism, including younger adults. Being small is the point of the place. With only a few people living here, staff know everybody properly rather than knowing a file about them, the week can be shaped around individuals rather than a rota, and somebody who needs quiet is actually able to find some. It also means the people who live here have real influence over how the house runs, from what gets cooked to how the shared rooms look and who comes to visit. We support people to do as much for themselves as they want and are able to, and we give help where it is genuinely needed without making anybody feel lesser for needing it. Communication is planned around each individual, and we take change at a pace people can manage rather than one that suits a review date. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

Maldon House is a residential care home in Seaford supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works from day to day. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally, including along the seafront. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Arranging and funding a care home place in East Sussex

Getting the need assessed

Families who ring homes before an assessment often find themselves repeating the same conversation, so it is worth having the need recorded first. Any adult who appears to require care and support can ask for an assessment, and it is provided free of charge whatever their income or capital. The assessor examines personal care, mobility, memory, night time safety and whether support at home might still be workable. East Sussex County Council carries out these assessments and arranges funded support for anyone meeting the eligibility criteria, and a relative can begin the request on somebody else's behalf. The written outcome then guides the care plan and any decision about money.

Weekly fees and contributions

Residential care is charged as a weekly fee taking in the room, meals, laundry and personal support, although homes differ over what that figure covers. A financial assessment accompanies the needs assessment, measuring income and capital against national thresholds to establish the personal contribution. Where the council funds or part funds a place, family may be asked for a third party top up if the chosen home charges above the council rate, and that arrangement should be written down before a move. Where the need is chiefly clinical rather than social, NHS continuing healthcare is worth raising, since it is assessed and paid for through the health service. Ask each home for a written schedule showing exactly which extras sit outside the weekly fee.

Choosing between care homes in East Sussex

What the ratings can and cannot tell you

Good is the prevailing outcome across these two hundred and nine homes and covers providers such as Bevern View, Castlemaine Care Home, Ashley Gardens and Nutley Hall. A smaller group, including Dalling House, Parkgate Manor and Lynfords, are rated Requires Improvement, and their reports explain precisely what inspectors asked to be put right. An Outstanding rating is represented on this list as well. Ratings age, though, so check when each inspection took place and ask the manager what has changed since, particularly where the visit was some time ago.

What to look at when you visit

Go when the home is busy, ideally at a mealtime, and give more weight to what is happening around you than to the tour itself. Notice whether residents are up, dressed and occupied, how promptly call bells are answered, and whether staff speak to people by name and at eye level. Ask how many permanent staff are rostered on each shift, how long they have been in post and how often agency cover is used overnight. Ask plainly what happens if needs increase, because a residential home is not always registered to keep somebody who later needs nursing.

Comparing the final few

Ease of visiting matters more than families anticipate, as the placements that settle best are those relatives can reach without turning each visit into an outing. Compare what the fee includes, whether a trial stay is offered, and whether the room you were shown is the room your relative would keep. Two or three visits are usually enough to make the right choice obvious.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in East Sussex

Will East Sussex County Council fund a care home place?

It may contribute, though what is paid follows a financial assessment as well as the assessment of need. Capital and income are compared with national thresholds to decide the personal contribution towards the weekly fee. If the preferred home charges more than the council will meet, family may be asked for a third party top up. Anyone whose needs are primarily clinical should ask about NHS continuing healthcare, which the health service funds instead.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in East Sussex?

Contact East Sussex County Council adult social care and ask for one, which can normally be started online or by telephone. The entitlement applies to anyone who appears to need care and support, and there is no charge. An assessor will talk through daily routines, memory, safety at home and the help family already provides. The written outcome records eligible needs and is the basis for any funded placement.

How far in advance should we start looking?

Allow several weeks where circumstances permit, since assessments, financial checks and visits rarely align neatly. Homes with strong reputations often keep waiting lists, so visiting more than one and keeping a second choice in reserve is sensible. When a hospital discharge is driving the timing, tell the ward team and the council at once because those placements move faster. An early start also means the decision can be taken calmly.

Which care homes in East Sussex are listed here?

215 residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission in East Sussex are gathered on this page. They range from large purpose built homes to smaller houses looking after a dozen or so residents. Each entry opens onto a profile with the provider details and the published inspection rating. Comparing them side by side makes shortlisting considerably easier.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in East Sussex?

Ask how many permanent staff cover each shift, how long they have been there and how much agency cover is used. Find out how care plans are reviewed, how families are informed about falls or illness and how medicines are handled. Ask what the weekly fee includes and what is charged separately, from hairdressing to chiropody and outings. Then ask what happens if needs change, and read the latest inspection report before you decide.

What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home offers a permanent home with meals, laundry and help with personal care, staffed throughout the day and night. A nursing home provides all of that and employs registered nurses, so clinical needs such as complex wounds or feeding tubes can be met on site. The distinction matters when health needs are likely to grow, since a residential home may not be registered to meet them. Both are inspected by the Care Quality Commission under different regulated activities.
