About Us

Ponbay Lodge is a residential care home in Hastings, supporting older people and younger adults from across East Sussex, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability.

A care home is judged by its ordinary days rather than its brochure, so that is where our attention goes. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Personal care offered calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Rooms that look like they belong to the person living in them. Staff awake overnight. Enough happening in the house to give the day a shape, and nobody pressed into joining anything they have no interest in.

People keep their own routines wherever we can arrange it, because a home that insists everyone rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has quietly stopped being a home.

For residents with a physical disability, getting about matters enormously. Accessible bathrooms, the right equipment, and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move. Mobility lost because assistance was inconvenient is a loss we work hard to prevent.

Where dementia is part of somebody's life we work on familiarity and calm instead of correction, and we ask relatives early for the history that helps us reach a person when they are distressed.

The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see the home, unannounced if you prefer, and talk to the people who already live here.

More about the care at Ponbay Lodge

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Rooms that look like they belong to the person living in them is one of the things this home says it attends to. The rest of its ordinary day is meals cooked here and eaten at a table, personal care offered calmly and in private, medication managed properly, and staff awake overnight. Ponbay Lodge says people keep their own routines wherever that can be arranged, because a home that makes everybody rise at the same hour has stopped being one. Ask how many staff are awake overnight for sixty six residents. Ask how a new resident's routine is learned and recorded. Ask who telephones a relative if something changes.

Dementia

Relatives are asked for the details that help, this home says, and its stated approach is familiarity and calm instead of correction. That is the right order, since correcting somebody who has lost the thread achieves nothing while a recognised face achieves a great deal. Good dementia care also needs a routine that holds and space to move about without being turned back at a door. The registration here is residential rather than nursing, so there is a ceiling on what can be managed as health declines. Ask how a difficult afternoon is handled. Ask at what point the home would say it could no longer meet somebody's needs.

Physical Disability

Mobility lost because assistance was inconvenient is a loss this home says it works hard to prevent. Against that it sets accessible bathrooms, the right equipment and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move. Ask what equipment is in use, how many staff a transfer needs, and who reassesses when mobility changes.

Younger Adults

East Sussex usually pays about £800 to £950 a week, against South East fees of £1100 to £1450, so funding is rarely straightforward. For an adult under sixty five in a house of sixty six mostly older residents, what the week holds matters as much as the care. Ask what a younger resident would do with their days, and whether anyone near their age lives here.

Residential Care

Sixty six places are registered at Ponbay Lodge, residential rather than nursing, which decides what the home can manage. Residential care means everyday living support without nurses on the premises: cooked meals, personal care, medication, company and enough happening to give a day some shape. Health needs are met by GPs and community nurses visiting instead. Fees for this kind of care in the South East typically run from £1100 to £1450 a week, while East Sussex usually pays between £800 and £950. Ask what would happen if a resident came to need nursing care, and whether that would mean moving on from Hastings.

Answered from the CQC register where we can. 6 of these the home has not told us yet, so ask when you call.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.

Yes. Ponbay Lodge supports younger adults as well as older people. Source: CQC register

Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
