Care Homes in Herefordshire County Of 58 care homes · 49 rated Good by CQC

Most families begin looking at care homes in Herefordshire County Of with a short list of worries and no map of the system: whether a parent is safe alone at night, what any of it costs, and who decides. Herefordshire Council is the authority responsible for the care needs assessment that records the level of support required, and after a separate financial assessment it decides whether public funds will meet part of the fee. 58 residential care homes match this search, all registered with the Care Quality Commission. Three of them are rated Outstanding and forty three are rated Good, while six have been told they require improvement, one has been judged Inadequate and two carry no published grade yet. Grades summarise a single inspection rather than settle a decision, so open the profiles that interest you, read the findings in full, and take the questions they raise with you when you visit.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Hereford supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who need help with daily living. The house is run as a household rather than a service. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping is done, who wants to go out and where to. For adults who have often had decisions made on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is much of the point. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do, whether that is a job, a college course, a regular volunteering day, getting out, keeping up with family or managing money with a hand from staff. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We prefer to say so plainly rather than leave you to discover it. We are working through the matters the inspectors raised and are willing to go through the report with anyone considering the home. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here. That will tell you more than anything we can write.

    • Care Home

Woodpecker Lodge is a residential care home in Ross on Wye, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, adults living with mental health needs and older people, including younger adults and people staying with us for respite. We are a home first. People here have their own rooms, their own belongings and a genuine say over the ordinary decisions of a day, from what to eat to whether they want company or quiet. Support is agreed with the person rather than written about them, and we review it as things change rather than leaving a plan to go stale in a folder. For residents with a learning disability or autism, communication is where we start. We learn how someone tells us what they need, including when that is not through speech, and we build routines that are predictable and warned about in advance. For those living with mental health needs, we pay attention to the early signs that something is shifting and we act on them, working alongside community teams rather than around them. Respite stays are available and are treated with the same care as permanent places. Someone staying a fortnight is part of the household for that fortnight. We would rather show you the home than write about it. If you are looking at options in Herefordshire, please arrange a visit and come and see how the day runs.

Aston House is a residential care home in Hereford, supporting older people and younger adults. We work with people who have a learning disability, people who are autistic and people living with mental ill health, and we offer short stays as well as permanent places. Because the people who live here have such different lives, we do not run the house to one pattern. Support is worked out individually, and the week belongs to the person. For some that means a job, a course or volunteering. For others it means regular time with family, a favourite trip out, or a settled routine that nobody interferes with. Our team takes the time to learn how each person communicates. Not everybody uses speech, so we pay attention to gesture, expression and behaviour, and we are willing to be corrected when we have read something wrongly. Where somebody becomes upset, we work on the basis that there is a reason for it and that finding the reason is part of our job. People choose their own food, keep their own space and habits, and are supported to take on as much for themselves as they want to. Help with personal care and medication is given discreetly, in the way each person prefers. If you would like to look round or discuss a placement, please get in touch and we will arrange a time to suit you.

Pound Farm, part of Walsingham Support, is a residential care home near Ross on Wye in Herefordshire. We support adults with a learning disability or autism, adults with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, providing a home where support is shaped around the individual rather than the other way round. What we try to offer is a reliable structure, communication pitched to each person and the patience to let somebody do a thing in their own way and their own time. Support can include personal care, medication, help around the house, getting to appointments and taking part in life beyond the front door, from ordinary errands to activities somebody genuinely enjoys. Where a person has goals of their own we plan support that steps back as their confidence grows. We support younger adults and older adults alike, and we are careful not to assume that what suits one generation suits another. Respite stays are available too, which can give a family carer a real break and can let someone try the place before any permanent decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The Old Vicarage is a residential care home in the countryside near Leominster, in Herefordshire. We care for older people, and we also welcome respite guests who need somewhere for a few weeks rather than permanently, whether that is to recover after a hospital stay or to give a family carer a proper rest. We are a small home and we run it as a household. Residents get up when they wake, spend their days where they choose, and are not hurried through anything they can still manage themselves. Meals matter here, and so does the pace of the day. When somebody moves in, we take the time with them and their family to learn about their working life, their family, their tastes and the small habits that make a day feel normal, because care planned without that knowledge is care planned blind. Practically, we help with washing, dressing, medication, meals, mobility and continence, at whatever level each person needs, adjusting quietly as things change. We bring in GPs, district nurses and other health colleagues promptly rather than waiting to see how things go, and we tell families about changes as they happen. The setting is a quiet one and we make the most of it, with fresh air and the garden a part of most days for those who want them. Families and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. If you are looking at homes in this part of Herefordshire, please arrange to visit.

    • Care Home

Dulas Court is a residential care home in Herefordshire, near Hereford, looking after older people who need support with daily living rather than nursing care. We offer permanent places and respite stays, and we support residents living with dementia. Being in the countryside is part of what we offer, and we make use of it. Getting outside matters to people and is the first thing to slide when a home gets busy, so we keep it deliberately on the agenda, whether that means a walk, a drive, or simply sitting somewhere with a good view and a cup of tea. Our focus is on daily life rather than treatment. Residents keep their own routines, their own belongings and their own preferences, and are supported to carry on doing whatever they can for themselves. The help exists to make ordinary life possible rather than to take it over. For residents with dementia we rely on familiarity and patience: the same staff, a routine that holds its shape, and the willingness to give somebody the time to respond in their own way. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break and are planned as carefully as any permanent move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are thinking about a place for yourself or a relative, please come and see us and make up your own mind.

Tithe Barn is a residential care home in Ross on Wye. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Because the people who live here are at different stages of life and want different things, we plan individually rather than running the house to one routine. Some are out a good deal, at activities, at work or seeing family. Others prefer things quiet and predictable, and neither is treated as a problem. Support is agreed with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, and we take the trouble to learn it properly rather than guessing. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time somebody prefers. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. • Care Home

We are Montfort Fields, a residential care home in Kington, Herefordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. This is somebody's home first and a care setting second, and we try hard to keep it that way. People here have their own rooms, their own belongings and a real say in how the day goes, from what is cooked to what happens at the weekend. Our support is built around the individual. Some people want a full and busy week, with activities, work, college, volunteering or trips out into the surrounding countryside. Others prefer a quieter, more predictable rhythm and need that predictability protected. Both are fine. We take the time to understand how a person communicates, what helps them feel calm and what they are working towards, and we adjust our support as those things change rather than assuming this year looks like last year. We also provide respite stays. These give families a planned break and give the person staying a proper visit rather than an emergency placement, so we prepare carefully and make sure everyone knows what to expect. Being in a small Herefordshire town means the local community is part of daily life, and we encourage people to use the shops, the groups and the places they enjoy. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us good overall. Families are welcome to visit, and we would encourage anyone considering Montfort Fields to come and see the place for themselves.

The Forbury is a residential care home in Leominster, Herefordshire. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run the home the way a household runs rather than the way an institution does. People keep their own belongings and their own habits. Meals are something to look forward to and to have an opinion about. Mornings are not hurried. Where somebody can do a thing for themselves, we support rather than replace, even when doing it ourselves would be quicker. For people living with dementia, familiarity carries most of the weight. Consistent faces, a predictable shape to the day, food and music from the right part of a life, and staff who do not correct or rush. Where a person is living with a mental health condition, we work with community teams and with families so that support stays joined up and a hard week is met with patience. Respite stays give a family carer a proper break, or offer somebody support for a shorter period without a permanent move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit if you are considering the home. We will answer your questions straight.

Waverley House is a nursing home in Leominster, offering both residential and nursing care to older people and to younger adults, along with respite and short stays. Having qualified nurses here means we can look after people whose health needs are complex or changing, and it means families do not face another move when needs increase. Nursing care matters most, though, when it is delivered by people who know the person, so we work hard at continuity and at knowing more about somebody than their notes contain. Dementia care is a large part of what we do. We keep the day steady, allow plenty of time, and try to understand distress rather than simply manage it. Where a person's memory reaches further back than the present, we go there with them, which is usually kinder and almost always more useful than correcting. We work closely with GPs, district nurses and therapists, and we would rather ask for advice early than wait. Families are kept in the picture and are welcome here at any reasonable hour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep looking at what could be better, particularly the ordinary things, food, timing, comfort and dignity, which are what people actually notice. If you are considering nursing care for someone, please come and see us and ask whatever you need to.

Field Farm House Residential Home is a care home in Hereford, Herefordshire. We support older people and younger adults, people living with dementia, those managing mental ill health and people with physical disabilities, and we take respite bookings for stays of a few weeks. We aim for a homely place with a day that belongs to the people living in it. Rooms hold people's own things, meals are worth sitting down to, and there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Our staff work with people they know well, which is what lets them notice early when somebody is not their usual self and get the GP or district nurse involved before a small problem grows. We want to be open about our regulator rather than leave you to find out elsewhere. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission found that we require improvement overall. We took that seriously. There is an action plan, we are working through it with the whole team, and we will talk any family through exactly what was raised, what has changed and what is still in hand. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we would much rather hear a concern the day it arises. If you are looking at care in the Hereford area, please come and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Credenhill Court Rest Home is a residential care home near Hereford, providing a settled home for older people who need support with daily living. We care for residents living with dementia or a mental health condition, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. We aim for an ordinary life with good support behind it. Residents choose when they get up, how they spend their days and what they eat. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered. There is company and activity for those who enjoy it and no pressure on anyone who would rather have peace. Our staff take time to learn what helps a particular resident feel settled and what unsettles them, which matters greatly for anyone living with dementia or managing a mental health condition. We ask families to tell us about a person's life, work, music and habits, because reassurance lands far better when it is familiar. We work closely with local GPs, community nurses and mental health teams so that health concerns are dealt with quickly, and we keep families properly informed. Relatives are welcome whenever it suits them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. If you are thinking about a move for yourself or a family member, please come and see us.

Old Court Barn Residential Care Home is a residential care home at Lugwardine in Herefordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We provide permanent residential care and we also offer respite stays, which many families rely on for a planned break or at short notice when circumstances change. We are a small setting in a rural part of the county, and that shapes how we work. Staff know everyone here properly, so changes in mood or health tend to be noticed early rather than after they have become a problem. Routines matter a great deal to many of the people we support, and we hold to them. When something has to change, we explain it in good time and in a way that makes sense to the person, using whatever form of communication works best for them. Our aim is an ordinary life rather than a managed one. That means people doing their own shopping where they can, choosing what goes on the meal plan, keeping up work or college placements, and seeing family without having to fit into our timetable. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit, meet the team and see the house as it actually is on a normal day, which is the only fair way to judge a place like this.

    • Care Home

We are a residential home at Merrivale Farm near Ledbury, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who need help with daily living. Being out in the Herefordshire countryside shapes the place. There is room to be outside, work to do if somebody wants it and a slower pace than a town setting allows, which suits several of the people who live here very well. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping happens, who wants to go out and where to. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do. For some that is a job or a regular volunteering day. For others it is keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff, learning to cook something new, or simply having people around who understand how they communicate and what unsettles them. Where people have grown older here, we adapt what we provide rather than suggesting a move. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Nestled within the historic county of Herefordshire in the West Midlands, our home combines the comfort of familiar surroundings with the reassurance of professional care. Our location within the HR postcode area places us in a peaceful part of Hereford, allowing residents to enjoy the character and calm of this beautiful cathedral city. The setting offers a homely atmosphere where people can feel settled, safe, and truly at ease. Families visiting loved ones will find a welcoming environment that reflects the community spirit of the wider Herefordshire area, with familiar local landmarks and green spaces close by. At Wykenhurst, we understand that every resident arrives with their own story, preferences, and needs. That is why we offer a broad range of specialisms designed to meet people wherever they are in life. Our team supports older person care with kindness and patience, recognising the value of maintaining dignity, independence, and personal routine. For those living with dementia, we provide gentle, consistent support that helps reduce anxiety and encourages meaningful daily engagement. We take time to learn about each resident's history, so that familiar conversations, music, and activities can bring comfort and joy. We also welcome adults living with mental health needs, offering a calm and understanding environment where emotional wellbeing is nurtured alongside physical health. For residents with a physical disability, we adapt our approach to promote as much independence as possible, whilst ensuring that assistance is always close at hand. Our support for younger adults reflects our belief that quality residential care should be tailored to the individual, whatever their age or circumstances. For families who need short term support, our respite care option offers a valuable opportunity. Whether you are a carer in need of a well earned break, or a loved one is recovering from a hospital stay, respite at Wykenhurst provides peace of mind. Residents receive the same warmth, attention, and personalised care during a short stay as those with us on a longer term basis. What this means in practice is that families can feel confident their relative is being cared for by a team who genuinely listens. We take time to understand personal preferences, from favourite meals and daily routines to hobbies and cherished memories. This person centred approach shapes everything we do, from the way we support morning routines to the activities we offer throughout the day. We believe that good care is built on relationships, trust, and small moments of kindness that add up to a life well lived. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, carried out on 25 July 2024, which awarded us an overall rating of Good. We were rated Good across every one of the five key areas assessed: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this consistent rating offers meaningful reassurance. It indicates that our residents are safeguarded appropriately, that the care they receive genuinely meets their needs, that our staff treat people with compassion and respect, that the home adapts to changing circumstances, and that our leadership fosters a positive culture throughout. Achieving Good in every domain is something we are proud of, but we also see it as a foundation rather than a finishing point. We continually reflect on how we can improve, listening to feedback from residents, families, healthcare professionals, and our own team. Care is never static, and neither is our approach to it. Choosing a care home for someone you love is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. We understand the mixture of emotions involved, from concern and uncertainty to hope for what comes next. Our aim is to make that journey feel less daunting. We welcome open conversations, honest questions

Eastbank is a residential care home in Hereford. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Supporting people with such different needs under one roof only works if nobody is treated as a category. We take each person as they come, learn how they want their day to go and build support around that. Some residents want a lot of company and occupation. Others want quiet and predictability. There is room here for both. The building is arranged so that people with reduced mobility can get about safely and independently, and our staff are trained in moving and handling and in supporting people who communicate differently. Where somebody uses signing, pictures or objects we learn their way rather than expecting them to learn ours. For autistic residents we keep routines stable and flag change well in advance. For people living with dementia we keep the day predictable and calm and work out what reassures that particular person, since it is rarely the same twice. We involve families and advocates as much as each person wants, hold regular residents meetings and act on what is raised. If something is not working we would far rather be told early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round and talk to the people who live here.

Orchard House is a residential care home in Withington, Herefordshire. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, and younger adults who need residential care. We also offer respite stays. We are a home of a size where everybody is properly known, and that is the basis of everything else we do. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it is dealt with the same day rather than at a review in a month's time. Residents run their own days. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others or keep to their own room with their own things around them. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Being in the countryside has its advantages. The garden gets used properly in decent weather, family and friends call in freely, and the pace suits people who have spent their lives here. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps most, so we keep staffing settled and learn each person's history properly. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit.

    • Care Home

Shaftesbury Wall Street is a residential care home in Hereford supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults with physical disabilities. This is a home rather than a placement, and we want everyone living here to feel that it belongs to them. Support is planned individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it also covers the parts of life that are too easily treated as optional: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having something worthwhile in the week. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we help people move about safely without taking over from them. We give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed, and where somebody wants greater independence we plan support that withdraws as their confidence grows. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we take care not to assume that shared circumstances mean shared wishes. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household works.

We are a residential care home near Ross On Wye, supporting older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability or autism and people living with mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a period rather than permanently. Supporting people whose needs differ this much only works if you start from the individual. For some of the people who live here, what is needed is largely practical, help with personal care, medication, meals and getting about. For others it is a day that runs to a predictable shape, warning before anything changes, and staff who understand that a routine can be the thing holding everything else together. We would rather somebody did something for themselves slowly than had it done for them quickly, even when that is less tidy and takes longer. We should be open about the regulator rather than leave you to find out later. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are working through the points raised with us, and if you are considering a place or a short stay here, please ask about it directly and we will tell you what has changed and what is still in hand. The most useful thing you can do is come and see the place, talk to staff and see how people here seem. Please get in touch and we will arrange a visit.

    • Care Home

Whitchurch House is a residential care home near Ross on Wye in Herefordshire. We provide a permanent home to older people and we take shorter respite stays, including at fairly short notice when a family situation changes or somebody is coming out of hospital. Our residents need different things from us. Many need help with washing, dressing, moving safely and taking medication on time. Many are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day familiar, keep the same staff around and take the time that is needed rather than the time that is convenient. We also support people living with mental ill health, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, and in each case we work out how best to communicate and to assist before we start rather than afterwards. The setting helps. We are in a quiet part of the county, there is a garden, there is food cooked in our own kitchen, and there is space to sit somewhere peaceful if the lounge is too busy. Families visit as often as they like and are welcome to join a meal. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us, ideally when the house is busy, and talk to whoever is on duty.

    • Care Home

Buckfield House is a residential home in Leominster supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run this as a home rather than as a facility, and the distinction is not cosmetic. The people who live here have their own routines, their own interests and their own opinions about how the house should work, and we think that is exactly right. Support is built around each individual: what they want to do with their time, the help they need to do it, and the parts of life they would much rather handle themselves. Some people here need a great deal of support and others need very little. Knowing which is which, and being willing to step back rather than hover, is a large part of doing this job well. Communication gets close attention from us. A great deal of what goes wrong in support for autistic people and people with a learning disability comes down to somebody not being understood or not being given enough time. We learn how each person communicates and we work at their pace. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break while the person staying gets a change of scene on their own terms. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and see how the house runs on an ordinary day.

Here at Pencombe Hall, we offer residential care for older adults in a welcoming and comfortable setting in the heart of Bromyard, Herefordshire. We are proud to have received a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine commitment of our whole team to providing thoughtful, person centred support day in and day out. We support people living with dementia, mental health needs and physical disabilities, as well as those who need a shorter stay with us through respite care. Whatever brings someone to Pencombe Hall, we take the time to get to know each person properly, understanding their history, their preferences and what matters most to them in daily life. Care is never one size fits all, and we work closely with residents and their families to make sure support is shaped around the individual rather than the other way around. The atmosphere here is warm and unhurried. We want residents to feel genuinely at home, not just looked after. That means encouraging independence where possible, maintaining meaningful routines and making sure people have opportunities to enjoy life, stay connected and feel valued as individuals. Families often tell us how reassured they feel knowing their loved ones are settled and well cared for, and we take that trust seriously. We welcome visits and encourage families to stay involved in the lives of those who live with us. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone close to you, whether on a permanent or temporary basis, we would be very happy to have a conversation and show you around. Pencombe Hall is located in Bromyard and is easily reachable for families across Herefordshire and the surrounding area. Please do get in touch to find out more.

We are Lyndale, a residential care home in Hereford. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. That is a wide range of needs living under one roof, and it only works if we plan properly. Somebody who wants a sociable, busy day and somebody who needs quiet and an entirely predictable routine can both live well here, provided we pay attention to who needs what and when. So we ask, we observe, and we adapt rather than running everyone to the same timetable. The help itself covers personal care, medication, meals and mobility, and we give proper attention to access and communication where those matter. We are just as concerned with supporting what people can still do themselves, because independence lost unnecessarily is very hard to get back. Families and friends are welcome at any reasonable hour. We keep relatives informed about changes rather than waiting to be asked, and if something has gone wrong we say so. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

We are Blackwells, a residential care home in Hereford. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people managing a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. A home with that mix of people in it cannot run on one routine, and we do not try to make it. What works instead is knowing each person well enough that their day makes sense to them. Somebody who needs quiet in the afternoon gets it. Somebody who wants company at breakfast gets that. The skill is holding all of it together without anybody's needs being quietly traded away for somebody else's. Communication is where we start with every new resident. How does this person make themselves understood, and how do we make ourselves understood to them. We settle that early, use it consistently, and check it is working rather than assuming. Choice runs through the day as far as it can, and where a decision needs support we support it rather than making it. Families and advocates are welcome and involved as much as the person wishes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

We are Charnwood Country Residence, a residential care home near Hereford. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that and also clear about what it means. It is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong here. It reflects the fact that we know the people who live here well, that our staff are properly supported, and that when something needs putting right we deal with it rather than explaining it away. In daily life that shows in small things. People get up and go to bed when they choose. Meals are what somebody actually wants to eat. Their own furniture and pictures come with them and their habits come first. Being out in the country, we make good use of the grounds and the garden. For people living with dementia, we work with the person as they are now, knowing their history, spotting early what unsettles them and going at their pace rather than the rota's. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we tell them when something has changed. Please ring us and come and see the home.

    • Care Home

Winslow Court is a care home in Bromyard, Herefordshire. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, mostly younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. The question we ask ourselves about this place is whether the people living here have lives they would recognise as their own. Not whether the building is tidy or the records are in order, though both matter, but whether somebody has friendships, somewhere to go and genuine say over an ordinary week. If everyone's week looks the same, we have got something wrong. Being in a country town has its advantages. Things are within reach, the same faces turn up in the same places, and people here are known locally as individuals rather than as residents of somewhere. Keeping that connection alive does more good than most of what we could organise indoors. Most of our effort goes into communication and predictability. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things. Where the week needs to be steady, we keep it steady and give plenty of notice before anything changes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us whatever matters to them.

Ganarew House Care Home provides residential care near Monmouth for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution, and most of what we do is ordinary. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want to eat, keeping an eye on health, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents get up when they choose, spend their time as they wish, keep their own things around them and have visitors whenever it suits. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable shape to the day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story, and we know that a calm unhurried approach prevents far more distress than it costs in time. Respite stays are genuinely useful. A planned stay gives a family carer proper rest, and it lets somebody find out what we are like without committing to anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us.

    • Care Home

We at Venns Lane Care Home are proud to offer dedicated residential care in the historic cathedral city of Hereford, providing a warm and supportive home for older people across Herefordshire and the wider West Midlands region. Nestled within the HR postcode area, our care home benefits from the gentle pace and welcoming character that Hereford is known for. The local setting offers residents a sense of place and community, whilst the surroundings provide a calm and reassuring backdrop to daily life. We aim to create an environment that feels less like an institution and more like a true home, where comfort, familiarity, and dignity sit at the heart of everything we do. Our specialisms reflect the diverse needs of the people who come to live with us. Alongside general residential care for older people, we provide thoughtful support for those living with dementia, individuals with mental health needs, and residents with a physical disability. In practice, this means our approach is built around the whole person rather than a single diagnosis. For families, it offers the reassurance that as a loved one's needs evolve, our team is equipped to respond with patience, understanding, and consistency. We recognise that moving into a care home is a significant decision, and we work closely with relatives to ensure care plans reflect individual preferences, routines, life histories, and the small details that make each person who they are. For residents living with dementia, we focus on creating a predictable, calm, and engaging atmosphere where people feel safe to be themselves. For those with mental health needs or a physical disability, we place importance on independence, respect, and enabling each resident to participate in daily life in the way that suits them best. Our wider ethos is built on kindness, attentive listening, and the belief that good care is rooted in strong, trusting relationships between residents, families, and the team supporting them. We are pleased that the Care Quality Commission has awarded Venns Lane Care Home an overall rating of Good, with Good ratings across each of the five key domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this independent assessment offers meaningful reassurance that the care provided here meets the standards expected of a quality residential setting, and that safety, effectiveness, compassion, responsiveness, and leadership are all reflected in the day to day experience of those who live with us. If you are exploring care options in Hereford for a parent, partner, or relative, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Choosing the right home is a deeply personal journey, and we would be glad to answer your questions, share more about our approach, and help you understand whether Venns Lane Care Home could be the right next chapter for your loved one. Whatever stage you are at in your search, please know that you do not have to navigate this decision alone, and a kind, listening ear is always available here.

    • Care Home

We are Stable Cottage, a small residential care home in Ross On Wye. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. Being a small house is the point of us. It means the people who live here are not managing a constant stream of unfamiliar staff, that routines can be genuinely individual rather than set by the demands of a large rota, and that we tend to know without being told when somebody is having a difficult day. We start from what each person wants their week to look like and work back to the support that makes it possible. That might take in college or work, a regular swim, cooking their own meals, seeing family, or getting out into the town and the countryside. Where somebody finds noise or change hard, we keep to a predictable rhythm and prepare properly for anything out of the ordinary. This is their home, so decisions about food, decoration and how time is spent belong to the people living in it. We also talk risks through with the person and with those who know them well, because being overprotective is easier for us and worse for them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Falcons Rest and Poachers Cottage is a residential care home at Wormelow in Herefordshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including many younger adults. We offer permanent places and planned respite stays. We are a small rural home and that shapes how we work. Staff know every resident properly rather than from a note in a file, the pace is unhurried and there is space outdoors that people can actually use. For many of the adults we support, a quieter setting with predictable rhythms is not a compromise but the thing that makes daily life manageable. Residents have their own rooms, a real say in how the household runs and support planned with them rather than written about them. We look for ways to build skills and confidence rather than quietly taking tasks over. Getting the environment right is central. Noise, lighting, predictability and knowing what happens next often decide whether someone is settled or on edge. Where a person signs, uses symbols or an app, or communicates through behaviour we have learned to read, the responsibility for understanding is ours. Being rural does not mean being cut off, and we support people to keep up college, work, friendships and family contact. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Fairfield House is a residential home in Ludlow supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, most of them younger adults getting on with their own lives. Keeping the house small is deliberate. It means everybody knows each other and the staff properly, and the atmosphere stays calm. People choose how their own room looks, join in with shopping and cooking if they want to, and have a genuine say in how the household runs. Routines are built around the individual, including the ones that need to stay exactly the same from one day to the next, because predictability is often what allows a person to relax enough to try something new. Support is agreed with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, and we take the time to learn it properly rather than guessing and hoping. Life here is meant to include the world outside. People get out into Ludlow and the surrounding countryside, to activities, to work, to see family, and we provide as much or as little support as that actually takes rather than hovering. Respite stays are available for people who need a short break or whose family carers do. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Getting out matters to most people here, whether that is a regular activity, seeing family or a trip into Ledbury that has become part of the week. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

We are Hillside Care Centre in Hereford. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We aim for something domestic rather than institutional. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own habits, and decide for themselves how their day runs. What time you wake, where you eat, whether you want company or would rather sit quietly: those are your decisions and they stay that way. A great deal of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable, and we would rather describe it plainly than make grand claims. For people living with dementia we work with the person as they are now. Knowing their history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and having the patience to go at their pace prevents a lot of distress before it begins. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we have, please come and see the home and ask us detailed questions about staffing, training and how care is planned here. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would always rather hear a concern early.

    • Care Home

Ridgemoor Road is a residential care home in Leominster, Herefordshire. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, along with older people who need help with daily living. Because we are a house rather than an institution, we can plan around people instead of around a routine. Residents choose how they spend their days, help with cooking and shopping if they want to, keep their own habits and arrange their rooms as they like. Support is written with each person, in words they can check, and reviewed with them. Much of doing this well is simply paying attention. We learn how each person communicates, what they enjoy, what makes a day difficult and what helps when it goes wrong. For autistic residents we take particular trouble over predictability, quiet space and clear information about what is coming next. We encourage people to keep hold of their outside lives, whether that means family, friends, work, college or long standing interests. Where someone wants to try something new, our starting question is how to make it possible. Respite stays are available, giving families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere they already know. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. If you would like to visit, please get in touch and we will arrange a convenient time.

    • Care Home

The Orchard near Monmouth is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. A house shared by adults of different ages and very different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely tolerated. Our residents do not want the same day as one another. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own company until the afternoon. Some need a great deal of practical help, others mainly a settled base and staff who know them properly. Running the place well means holding all of that at once without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. We plan support with each individual and with whoever they want involved, and we adapt how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

We are West Bank Residential Home in Ross on Wye. We care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. What we provide is residential care rather than nursing care, and we are straightforward with families about the difference so that nobody moves in somewhere unable to meet their needs. Within it, we help with washing, dressing and getting about safely, support people with medication, provide proper meals and make sure nobody is left alone all day unless that is what they prefer. The home is run around the people living in it. Nobody is woken to suit a rota, mealtimes bend around the person, and how somebody spends the day is their own business. Some like the lounge and the conversation that fills it, others would rather keep to their own room. Dementia care here rests on knowing the individual. We learn about the work somebody did, the family they raised and the routines that steady them, and we use that rather than correcting anybody about the present. We keep families in the picture, ring early when concerned, and welcome visitors whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please get in touch to look round.

    • Care Home

Rosedale Retirement Home is in Ross on Wye and we provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so our strengths are personal care, a steady daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here properly rather than from paperwork. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything that has become difficult to manage, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried through a plate. Being in this part of the country means there is somewhere pleasant to sit outside and the countryside is close at hand. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. You are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

The Trio House is a small residential care home in Hereford supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team reads those signs the same way. Once that is in place, life can be kept predictable enough for a person to relax, and we can spot early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available as well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here seem at ease.

    • Care Home

Chesfield House is a residential care home in Leominster supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, and people living with mental health conditions. We think of this as the home of the people who live in it. They arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We are here to make an ordinary life possible, which means supporting people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to family, rather than filling a timetable for them. Support is individual and is agreed with the person. Some people here need a great deal of help and some need very little. Communication gets particular attention, and we use whatever suits each person, whether speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from living alongside someone. Where a person is managing a mental health condition, a calm and predictable household tends to do more good than anything else we could offer. We also provide short respite stays, which give family carers a break and let somebody try the house before any longer decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

    • Care Home

Lammas Lodge is a residential care home in Hereford supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. It is a home rather than somewhere people have been referred into, and we want everyone living here to feel that it belongs to them. Support is planned individually and practically. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, money and appointments, and it covers the things that make a week worth having: seeing people, going out, keeping up an interest, being useful, having something to look forward to. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we give people the time to do things themselves even when stepping in would be quicker. Where somebody wants more independence, support is planned to withdraw gradually as they grow into it, and we treat that as the whole point rather than a loss of service. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we are careful not to assume that a shared diagnosis means shared wishes. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household actually runs.

1 and 2 Markyes Close is a small residential home near Ross On Wye in Herefordshire, run by Aspire Living. It is home to adults with learning disabilities and to autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays, planned well in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. We run this as the residents' house. People choose how their bedrooms look, they have a genuine say in the shopping and the meals, and they get involved in cooking, gardening and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers getting out to whatever somebody is interested in, whether that is work, a course, a club, a place of worship or a regular visit to family. Where we put most of our effort is understanding each person properly. Some people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or a device, and some tell us what they need through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write it down so it survives a change of shift, and we take advice from families and from health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Herefordshire County Of

Narrowing fifty five homes down

Distance is usually the first filter and the grades the second. Whitegates, Coldwells House and Charnwood Country Residence hold Outstanding ratings here, and forty three further homes are rated Good. Six have been told they require improvement, one is rated Inadequate and two have no grade because they registered too recently to be inspected in full. Once a handful of homes remain, read their reports properly, since the written detail on staffing, medicines and leadership is where homes sharing a grade begin to differ.

What a residential place includes

Every provider listed offers accommodation together with personal care: help with washing and dressing, meals cooked and served, medicines given on time, laundry and daily company, with staff on duty overnight. None has a registered nurse on site around the clock. Where someone already needs wound dressings, insulin or close clinical monitoring, a home registered to provide nursing is the right place to look, and settling that question first saves wasted visits.

The practical fit

Ask how many people live at the home, whether bedrooms are single with their own bathroom, and whether a resident may bring furniture of their own. Ask how the building copes with someone unsteady on their feet and how the home supports people living with dementia. Be realistic about the journey relatives will make each week, in winter as much as in summer, because regular visiting does more for a resident's wellbeing than anything shown on a tour.

Choosing between care homes in Herefordshire County Of

The care needs assessment

Almost every placement follows a care needs assessment, free to anyone who appears to need care whatever their savings. A social worker discusses washing, dressing, mobility, memory, medication and the support relatives already give, then records the level of care required. Where residential care is the answer, that record underpins the support plan and any funding decision. Requests are made to Herefordshire Council Adult Social Care, the authority responsible for assessing need and arranging funded placements.

How the cost is shared

A financial assessment follows separately, comparing income and capital with the national thresholds. Savings count, and the value of a property is generally counted once a move is permanent, though a deferred payment arrangement can help while a house is on the market. Where the council contributes, the resident still pays an assessed amount from pension and benefits. Above the threshold, families arrange and fund the placement and can ask for an assessment later if capital falls.

Fees, extras and time

Ask each home for its weekly fee in writing and for the list of what is billed separately, which usually includes hairdressing, chiropody and outings. Ask how often fees are reviewed, what notice is given of an increase and what is charged while a resident is in hospital. Then allow more time than feels comfortable, because assessments, visits and a suitable vacancy rarely arrive together. Every profile here carries the full inspection report, so much of the work can be done before you set out.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Herefordshire County Of

Which care homes in Herefordshire County Of are listed here?

58 residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission appear on this page. Whitegates, Coldwells House and Charnwood Country Residence hold Outstanding ratings, while Chepstow House, Orchard End, Lammas Lodge, Holmer Court Residential Home and The Forbury are among those rated Good. Each entry shows the provider type and the current rating. The profiles carry the inspection findings behind each grade.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation with personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, medicines and daily routine. A nursing home provides the same alongside a registered nurse on duty at all hours for clinical needs. All the providers listed here hold a residential registration. Where nursing input is already needed most days, look for a home registered to provide nursing care.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in Herefordshire?

Ask how many care staff are on duty by day and overnight, and how absence is covered at short notice. Ask how long the manager and senior carers have worked there, since a settled team knows residents well. Find out how illness, falls and hospital admissions are handled, and how quickly relatives are contacted. Ask to see the room that is genuinely available and to stay through part of a mealtime.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Herefordshire?

Contact the adult social care team at Herefordshire Council and ask for a care needs assessment. It is free and open to anyone who appears to need care, whatever their income or savings. A social worker will discuss daily living, mobility, memory, medication and the support relatives already provide, at home or on a hospital ward. The written outcome records the level of care required and forms the basis of any support plan.

Can Herefordshire Council fund a care home placement?

It can, where the needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital and income below the national thresholds. Property is usually taken into account once a move is permanent, though a deferred payment agreement may be possible while a house is sold. Where the council contributes, the resident pays an assessed amount from their income. Families above the threshold arrange the placement privately and can request an assessment later.

How far ahead should we start looking?

Start before circumstances force the decision, because assessments, visits and trial stays each take time to arrange. Homes here are spread out, so visiting two in a day is not always realistic. A few weeks of preparation makes it possible to compare fairly rather than accepting the first available room. Reading the inspection reports first removes wasted journeys.
