Care Homes in Norfolk 258 care homes · 164 rated Good by CQC

A county of market towns, coastal resorts and scattered villages, Norfolk has its care homes catalogued here in one directory, so that provision on the coast can be compared with provision inland without visiting a dozen separate websites. Care Quality Commission judgements across the collection reach from Outstanding and Good through Requires Improvement to Inadequate, and a further group of homes has registered too recently to have been inspected and carries no rating yet. 258 providers match this search, each of them registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing setting. Assessment of what someone needs, and any decision about publicly funded support, rests with Norfolk County Council under the national eligibility rules that apply everywhere in England. Use the profiles below to reach the inspection report sitting behind each rating, since what inspectors observed and what they asked a provider to improve is the evidence that should decide which homes are worth your time.

    • Care Home

The Windmill Care Home is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. We provide a home for older people, including many living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays, whether to give a family carer a break or to help somebody regain their confidence after a spell in hospital. We want this to feel like somewhere people live rather than somewhere people have been placed. Residents bring their own furniture and photographs, keep their own routines and decide how the day runs. Some are up early and want company and conversation straight away. Others want their own room, a newspaper and a quiet afternoon, and neither needs explaining to us. We plan around the person rather than around what is convenient for a rota. Supporting people living with dementia is a large part of what we do. Steadiness is what helps. Familiar faces, routines that change only when there is a reason, patience when words are hard to find, and a real effort to understand what somebody means rather than what they managed to say. Families are closely involved because they often hold the history that makes sense of the present. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are genuinely looking for. If you are considering a care home in Great Yarmouth for someone close to you, you are welcome to visit, look round properly, meet our staff and residents and ask us whatever you need to know.

    • Care Home

The Coach House is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Younger adults whose needs are best met in a residential setting are welcome too, and we take respite stays. Our work is the ordinary business of a day done with attention. Helping somebody get up and dressed the way they prefer. Serving food that is worth sitting down to. Making sure there is company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. Noticing quickly when a person is not themselves and doing something about it. For people living with dementia, consistency carries most of the weight. Familiar faces, a predictable shape to the day and staff who follow a person's own pace. Where somebody lives with a mental health condition we work alongside community teams and families so that a hard period is met with patience and everybody holds the same picture. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out here than let a family come across it later. We know what was identified, work is under way on it, and we will go through the detail with anybody who asks. Please come and see the home for yourself.

Church Farm is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth, supporting older people including those living with dementia. We offer permanent places and respite stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are putting that first rather than last, because anybody looking at care homes for a relative deserves to hear it from us rather than find it elsewhere. We know which areas were identified, work is under way on them, and we will go through the detail with anybody who asks. The daily work here is the ordinary business of a home. People get up when they are ready and are helped to wash and dress the way they prefer. Meals are worth sitting down to. There is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Somebody notices when a person is not themselves and does something about it. For people living with dementia, familiarity carries most of the weight. • Care Home

Caradon is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We think a good home is one where the people living in it are genuinely in charge of the ordinary things. What is for tea, what time the music goes on, whether today is a day for going out or a quiet one in. Staff are here to make those choices possible rather than to manage them away. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we support it steadily and without fuss. That might be cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling independently, or keeping up a job, a course or a volunteering placement. We go at the person's pace rather than one that suits our paperwork. Communication gets real attention here. A number of the people we support do not rely on speech, and understanding somebody properly is the difference between them running their own life and having it arranged for them. Norwich is on the doorstep and people here use it, keeping up the interests and friendships that were theirs before they moved in. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay in Norfolk, please get in touch and come and visit us.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in north Norfolk, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with mental health conditions. We try to run the place so that it belongs to the people who live in it. Residents have their own rooms with their own belongings, get up and go to bed when they choose and decide how they want to spend their days. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody says they would rather have something else. Much of what makes a care home worth living in is small and unglamorous: being helped to wash without being rushed, a hot drink at the time you actually want it, somebody noticing when you have gone quiet and sitting down with you. Dementia care, as we have come to understand it, is mostly a matter of knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. Family and friends are welcome whenever they would like to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall. We are pleased with that and conscious that a rating describes a particular moment. What keeps it true is the daily work and listening when somebody tells us something is wrong.

Whitehaven is a residential care home in Sheringham, Norfolk, for older people who need care, company and a settled place to live. We are a house rather than an institution, and the day here has the ordinary shape of meals, conversation, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we call in community health professionals whenever something more clinical is needed. Just as important are the things that are harder to write into a care plan: being listened to, having proper conversation, and somebody noticing when a resident seems quieter or less well than usual. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out here ourselves than leave a family to come across it later and wonder why we said nothing. The areas identified are where our effort is going at present, and we are not asking anybody to take our word for it. Please visit during an ordinary day, speak to the people who live here and judge us on what you find.

    • Care Home

Redlands House is a residential care home in Norwich. We care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia and those living with mental health conditions. Our care is the practical, daily kind: help to wash and dress, medication given properly, meals cooked here, support to move about safely and staff available through the night. Around that, residents arrange their own time as they wish, and we try not to organise people's lives on their behalf. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent, and we ask families to tell us about working lives, music and habits, because that knowledge does real work on a difficult afternoon. For people living with mental health conditions, consistency and staff who stay steady when things are difficult count for a great deal. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. • Care Home

Willowdene is a residential care home in Norwich supporting older people, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. Our approach does not change from one person to the next. We take time to learn how somebody communicates, what a good day looks like for them and what tends to make a difficult one, and then we build their support around that rather than fitting everybody into the same routine. Where a person can take on more for themselves, whether that is helping with meals, looking after their own room or getting out locally, we make room for it rather than stepping in out of habit. Life here runs around the people who live in the house. People get up when they are ready, spend their time on things they genuinely enjoy and keep their own belongings and routines around them. Respite stays are available too, for people who need support for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The measure we trust more is whether people here look at ease and whether relatives feel welcome to drop in and ask anything.

We are a residential care home in Thetford, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. Where sight or hearing is poor, small habits matter a great deal: saying who you are on coming into a room, speaking clearly and not moving things about without saying so. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. The Vineries is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and those with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We aim to run a household rather than a facility. Residents bring their own furniture and photographs, keep the routines they have always had and decide for themselves how much they want to be part of what is going on. Nobody is marched off to an activity they have not chosen. When somebody moves in we spend real time on their history and preferences, from what time they wake and how they take their tea to the work they did and the people who matter to them. It is written down so that everybody working here knows it, because care that changes with whoever is on shift is not care we would accept for our own families. Dementia support rests on familiarity and pace. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what settles a particular resident, since it is rarely the same for two people. For residents with physical disabilities we look at equipment and at how the building is arranged so that independence is protected where it can be. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents have a genuine say in the menu. Visitors are welcome through the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that and also clear about what it means. A rating reflects a point in time. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time that suits. • Care Home

Strawberry Field is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are here to help people live the life they choose, with as much or as little support as that takes, and we try hard not to let the practicalities of care crowd out the ordinary business of having a life. Support here starts with the person. Some people we support want a full and busy week, with college, work, volunteering or regular time with friends and family. Others prefer a quieter rhythm and plenty of familiarity. Both are fine. What matters is that the plan belongs to the person it is about, that it is written in language they can understand and use, and that it changes when they change their mind. We pay close attention to communication. Being understood is the foundation of everything else, so we take time to learn how each person tells us what they want, whether that is through speech, signing, objects, pictures or simply the things they do. Norwich gives us plenty to work with beyond the front door, and getting out into the city is part of normal life rather than a scheduled activity. We also provide respite, offering families a planned and properly prepared short stay rather than an emergency arrangement. The Care Quality Commission rated us Good at our most recent inspection. We are pleased with that and clear that it reflects the everyday work of the team rather than anything exceptional on the day. Visitors are always welcome, and we would rather you came and saw for yourself.

Lydia Eva Court is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. Many of our residents have lived on this coast all their lives and know it far better than we do, which makes for conversation worth having rather than filling with small talk. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they told us plainly than be polite about it.

    • Care Home

St Brannocks is a small residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team reads those signs the same way. Once that is in place, life can be kept predictable enough for a person to relax, and we can spot early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available as well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here seem at ease, so please come and see.

Oak Trees in Attleborough, Norfolk, provides respite and short stays for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, alongside older people. Respite is often talked about as a break for families, and it is that. But it should also be a break for the person coming to stay, and something they look forward to rather than endure. We try to make it a stay somewhere they know and like, with people they recognise, doing things they have chosen. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. What lies behind that is fairly ordinary: staff who stay long enough to know the people who come back to us, enough time to do things properly, and a willingness to say plainly when something needs putting right. Because stays are short, getting the start right matters enormously. We find out beforehand how somebody communicates, what settles them, what they eat, how they like their day to run and what they would rather avoid. For autistic guests in particular, knowing exactly what is going to happen and when takes most of the difficulty out of a stay away from home. People choose how they spend their time here, and getting out into Attleborough and the area around it is part of it. Please get in touch if you would like to visit and see the place.

    • Care Home

Springfield House is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults.

We are The Meadows, a residential care home in Norwich. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, including younger adults. Respite stays are available. We plan around individuals rather than around a single routine. The people living here have quite different notions of a good week. Some want to be busy, with work, college, sport or regular groups and plenty of getting out into the city. Others want quiet and a rhythm they can rely on, and where change is unsettling we keep things steady and prepare carefully for anything unusual. Because we also support people with physical disabilities and with sight or hearing impairment, a good deal of our attention goes on access, equipment and communication. Where those things are handled properly and without fuss, they stop shaping somebody's day and leave them free to think about the rest of their life. We are careful about independence too. If somebody can do a thing themselves, more slowly than we could do it for them, that is their time and their decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are used to detailed questions from families and commissioners and we welcome them. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

Sterling House is a residential care home in Norwich, Norfolk, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently, and where the day has a comfortable shape to it. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision is taken. We would far rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything we write about ourselves. Please visit, speak to the people who live here and ask us the questions that matter to you.

    • Care Home

Highwater House is a residential care setting in Norwich supporting adults living with mental health conditions and people in recovery from alcohol or drug misuse. We work in a way that is deliberately domestic rather than clinical, because recovery tends to happen in ordinary surroundings rather than institutional ones, and because being treated as an adult rather than a case matters enormously. Our approach starts with the person. We take time to understand what somebody's week looks like, what they want from it and what tends to knock things off course, and we build support around that rather than around a fixed routine. Where somebody is working towards more independence, whether that means managing their own medication, cooking, handling money or getting back into work or study, we look for the practical steps and go at a pace that suits them. We do not moralise and we do not treat a setback as a failure. Respite stays are available too. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. What matters more is whether people here feel able to tell us the truth about how they are doing.

    • Care Home

Munhaven is a residential care home in Norwich. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. We are small enough for everybody here to be known properly, and that shapes everything else. Our team can tell when a resident is not themselves long before it would show up at a formal review, which is usually while something can still be put right easily. Residents run their own days. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others or keep to their own room with their own things around them. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Families are welcome whenever they want to come and we would far rather have them involved in decisions than informed afterwards. For residents living with dementia, consistency is what helps most, so we keep staffing settled and learn each person's history properly, which is what allows us to make sense of what they are telling us rather than correcting them. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall. We were glad of it, and we know a rating reflects a moment in time and has to be earned again every day. Please come and visit us in Norwich.

Winchley Home is a residential care home in Kings Lynn. We provide residential care for adults including people living with dementia, and we offer respite and short stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to be one. What we offer is a comfortable house where people are properly looked after, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own routines and decide for themselves how much they want to be part of what is going on. Dementia care here rests on familiarity. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, we do not rush anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what calms a particular person, because it differs from one resident to the next. Families often find this stage hard, and we make time for them too, with honest conversations rather than reassurance for its own sake. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents tell us what they would like to see on the menu. There is something going on most days for those who want it, and no obligation for those who do not. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest and give the person staying with us a chance to get to know us gently, so we encourage a visit beforehand. Visitors are welcome through the day. Please come and see the home for yourself and talk to the people living in it.

Brackendale House is a residential care home in Sheringham, Norfolk. We support older people who need help with daily life, adults with mental health needs and younger adults, and we work with people affected by alcohol or drug misuse. We also offer respite stays. We support a mixed group of people here, and it works because we plan with each person individually and we do not judge anyone for how they arrived. Somebody rebuilding after a difficult period needs something quite different from an older resident who simply cannot manage alone any more, and both should be able to live here on their own terms. Everyone decides their own basics. When to get up, what to eat, whether they want company or their own room and their own company. Personal care, where it is needed, is given quietly and at the person's pace. Where someone has mental health needs, we agree in advance what a difficult patch looks like for them and what they would like us to do, so nobody is improvising at the worst moment. Where somebody is working on their relationship with alcohol or drugs, we support the plan they have chosen rather than lecture them about it. Health needs are dealt with alongside local GPs and community teams. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit us in Sheringham.

Badgers Wood is a residential care home in Norwich, Norfolk. We look after older people who need support with everyday living, and we also support younger adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. The mix of people we support is wider than in many homes, and we think that is a strength rather than a complication. It means we plan around the individual. What does somebody need, what can they still do perfectly well for themselves, and what do they want their day to look like. We aim for a calm, ordinary household. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, choose how they spend their time and see visitors when they like. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is company for anyone who wants it and quiet for anyone who does not. For residents living with dementia, familiar surroundings, unhurried staff and a predictable day matter more than anything else we could provide. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding. The Oaks is a residential care home in Norwich in Norfolk. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Much of what we do is about widening what is possible rather than occupying the day. Cooking something you actually want. Getting confident with money. Managing a journey into town alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Progress can be slow and can go backwards, and our part is to keep the chance open without pressure and to make something of it when it works. Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so everybody responds identically, and keep checking we have understood rather than assuming. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

Point House in Norwich is a residential care home supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We keep the house small and domestic on purpose. People live here rather than being placed here, and that shows in the ordinary run of the day. Everybody has their own room and their own belongings, and the shape of the week is set by the people who live in it. Support is agreed with each person and with those who know them best. For some it means help with every part of personal care, and for others it is prompting, encouragement and staff nearby while they manage things themselves. We take communication seriously, learning how each person makes themselves understood and what their behaviour is telling us, and we write down what we learn so that everybody responds in the same way. People are supported to get out into Norwich, to keep up activities and interests, to attend appointments and to see family and friends. Respite stays can be arranged where appropriate. If you are looking for a placement for somebody, please contact us. We will assess carefully and tell you honestly if we are not the right service for them.

We offer care for older adults, younger adults, people living with learning disabilities or autism, and those who need a short break through respite care. We know that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is one of the biggest decisions a family can face. We do not take that lightly. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure every person who comes through our doors feels safe, respected, and genuinely at home. We take time to understand each individual, their routines, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day. Our team works hard to create an environment where people can live as independently as possible while having the right level of support around them. We believe that good care is built on honest relationships, consistency, and listening, and we put that into practice every day. We are transparent about where we are as a setting. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in an overall rating of requires improvement, and we want to be open about that. We have taken that feedback seriously and have been working with focus and commitment to address the areas identified. Progress is being made, and we welcome scrutiny because it helps us improve for the people in our care. Lynfield sits in a community we genuinely feel part of. Klair House is a residential care home in Norwich, Norfolk. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people living with mental health needs, and we also offer respite stays. A small residential home works best when it is run around the people in it rather than around a timetable. Everyone here has a room that is theirs to arrange as they like, a say in the food, and a say in how the week is spent. Support with washing, dressing, medication, money and appointments is there for whoever needs it, offered in the way that person prefers and at the point in the day that suits them. We put a lot of thought into communication and into routine. For many of the people who live with us, knowing what is coming is what makes the day feel manageable, so we are careful about changes, we explain them in advance, and we accept that some things are non negotiable for good reason. Mental health needs and learning disability often sit together, and neither is a fixed state. Some weeks ask more of us than others, and that is expected rather than a crisis. Respite guests are treated exactly as everybody else here is. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would be glad to show you round.

Fridhem Rest Home is a residential care home in Kings Lynn, caring for older people from across west Norfolk. We provide permanent residential care and planned respite stays, and we support residents living with dementia alongside those who simply need a hand with daily life. We aim for a home that feels domestic. Meals people look forward to, a garden worth sitting in, familiar faces and enough time in the day for a proper conversation. Residents keep their own routines as far as they are able, and preferences about food, bedtimes and company are treated as decisions rather than requests. For residents living with dementia, we work from life history. Knowing a person's trade, their family, their habits and what they have always found comforting tells us more about how to support them than any general guidance. When someone is distressed, we look for the cause instead of reaching for a standard response. We should be direct about our last inspection. The Care Quality Commission rated us as requires improvement. We are working through the findings rather than explaining them away, with closer scrutiny of care records and risk assessments, more structured supervision for staff and clearer checks that what we plan is what actually happens. We would rather tell you that openly. Please visit, ask us hard questions and speak to the people who live here.

We support older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, and we provide respite stays as well as permanent places. We try to run a household rather than an institution. That shows in small things. Breakfast happens when people wake rather than at a fixed hour. There is always an alternative if what is on the menu does not appeal. Residents' own furniture and pictures are welcome, because a room only becomes yours once your own things are in it. Dementia care here starts with life history. This is farming country and many of our residents have spent their working lives outdoors, keeping early hours and marking the year by the seasons. Understanding that tells us far more about how to settle someone than any general approach could. When a resident becomes distressed, we look for the reason behind it rather than reaching for a routine answer. Family carers need proper rest, and our respite stays are planned so that a guest is welcomed into the life of the house rather than parked at the edge of it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking residents and relatives what could be better. Please come and visit us on an ordinary day. It tells you far more than anything written down.

    • Care Home

Nightingale Care Home is a residential care home in Dereham, Norfolk. We support older adults and younger adults, including many people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run a home rather than an institution, and the difference shows in small things. People get up when they wake rather than when a rota says so. They keep their own furniture and photographs about them. They decide whether the afternoon is a sociable one or a quiet one, and whether they want the door open or shut. For those living with dementia, we find that a steady rhythm to the day and a calm, uncluttered setting do more good than almost anything else. We ask families early for the details of a person's life, the work they did, where they grew up, the music they like, how they take their tea, and we use all of it. It is what allows staff to make sense of what somebody is telling us on a difficult afternoon. Respite stays suit families needing a break, people recovering after time in hospital, and anybody who would like to try the home before committing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange a visit and come and see how the place feels.

    • Care Home

Driftwood House is a residential care home in Hunstanton, caring for older people from across west Norfolk and the coast. We provide permanent residential places and planned respite stays, and we support residents living with dementia. We aim for a home that feels domestic. Meals people look forward to, familiar faces, sea air within reach and enough time in the day for a proper conversation. Residents keep their own routines as far as they are able, and preferences about food, bedtimes and company are treated as decisions rather than requests. For residents living with dementia we work from life history. Knowing a person's trade, their family, their habits and what has always comforted them tells us more about how to support them than any general guidance. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than reaching for a standard response. We should be direct about our last inspection. The Care Quality Commission rated us as requires improvement. We are working through the findings rather than explaining them away, with closer scrutiny of care records and risk assessments, more structured supervision and training for our staff, and clearer checks that what we plan is what actually happens each day. We would rather set that out plainly than have families hear it from somewhere else. Please visit us, ask hard questions and speak to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

Ingham Old Hall Care Home is a residential care home near Norwich, providing a settled home for older people who need support with everyday living. Life here is deliberately uncomplicated. Residents get up when they wake, eat when they are hungry, sit where they like and spend their days as they choose. Our staff look after the things that have become difficult, from personal care and medication to meals and laundry, so that people can put their energy into the parts of the day they actually enjoy. A number of the people living with us have dementia. What helps most, in our experience, is keeping things familiar, giving people time to answer, and knowing enough about somebody's life to be genuine company. Families tell us plenty about a person before they arrive, and that knowledge does more good than anything else we could arrange. Respite stays are part of what we do, whether a family carer needs a planned break or somebody needs looking after for a few weeks after being unwell. People who come for short stays are welcomed into the household rather than treated as temporary. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that, and we keep asking residents and relatives what could be better. If you would like to see Ingham Old Hall, please ring and arrange a visit.

    • Care Home

The Warren is a residential care home in Norwich supporting older people, including people living with dementia. Life here is domestic rather than clinical. The day is made of meals worth sitting down to, company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not, familiar routines, visitors at whatever hour suits them, and time outside as a normal part of the week. Help with washing, dressing, medication and moving about fits around all of that rather than setting its shape. Dementia support is a large part of our work, and we approach it by going with the person rather than against them. Correcting somebody rarely helps and usually distresses. What helps is familiarity: the same faces, the same routines, music and objects that mean something, and staff who have time to sit rather than move on. Where somebody is unsettled we look for a cause we can put right, and pain, noise, boredom or needing the loo account for most of it. We give the first few weeks particular attention, because how somebody is received tends to set the pattern for a long time afterwards. People bring their own furniture and pictures and find their own pace. Respite stays are available, giving a family carer a properly planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Visitors are welcome without an appointment, and we would rather you came on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

The Gables is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, offering a settled and comfortable home for older people who find that living alone has become difficult. Many of the people who live here are living with dementia, and our approach there is unhurried and consistent. We keep the day familiar, we avoid unnecessary change, and we take time at the start to learn about somebody's life and habits from them and from their family. Knowing who a person has been tells us far more about how to care for them now than a list of needs ever could, and it is usually the small details that prove most useful. Beyond that, people here decide how their days go. Some want company and whatever is happening in the lounge; others would rather have their own room, their own radio and their own peace. Both are perfectly reasonable. Care is given discreetly, with proper attention to privacy and dignity, and we support people to keep doing whatever they still can for themselves. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them, and we keep relatives properly informed rather than waiting to be asked. Respite stays are available too, for family carers needing a planned break and for people needing support for a few weeks after illness or a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us on an ordinary day.

Amethyst Lodge is a residential home in Great Yarmouth supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people living with mental ill health. Most of the people here are younger adults, and our aim is to give them a stable base from which they can get on with their own lives. Support is arranged around the individual. For some that means help to manage a routine, attend appointments and stay well; for others it is about confidence, whether that is cooking a meal, handling money or getting out and about in the town without it feeling like an ordeal. We work closely with community mental health teams and other professionals, and we try to make sure people understand and agree with what is being planned for them rather than having it decided over their heads. We also offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carers do. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that plainly than leave you to find it elsewhere. We have taken the findings seriously, we are working through the areas identified, and we are happy to talk you through exactly what has changed since. The Rookery is a residential home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people living here are younger adults, and we see our job as helping them get on with their own lives rather than organising those lives for them. We keep the house small and calm on purpose. Everyone has their own room to retreat to, and the shared parts of the house belong to the people who live here, not to the staff. Routines are planned around the individual, including the ones that need to stay exactly the same every day, because that predictability is often what makes everything else possible. Support is agreed with each person in a way they can understand, using signs, pictures or whatever already works for them. Some people want help to cook, to manage money or to travel independently; others need someone alongside them for most of the day. Both are fine, and neither is treated as a problem to be solved. Getting out into Norwich is part of normal life here, whether that is an activity during the week, seeing family, or a regular trip somewhere that matters to somebody. We also offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose families do. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit and see how the house runs.

Burlingham House is a residential care home in Norwich. We support older people who need daily care, including many people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, and younger adults who need residential support. The house is meant to feel like a household rather than an institution, because for the people living here it is their home. People choose when to get up, what they eat and how to spend their days. With a mixed group under one roof, flexibility matters more than routine, so we work out what each person wants from their week and fit around it instead of running one timetable for everybody. For those living with dementia we keep things steady and unhurried, with familiar faces and meals at the times people expect them, which does more good than anything complicated. We also offer respite stays, for families who need a break or for someone recovering after a stay in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We keep our own standards under review in between, because a rating describes one moment and people here need consistency. We are a residential care home in Norwich, offering a permanent home to older people, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We also take respite bookings, which can be planned in advance so a family carer gets a break, or arranged more quickly when someone needs support for a while after an illness. Moving into a care home is a considerable change and we do not treat it lightly. The first weeks matter, so we spend them finding out how somebody has always done things. When they like to wake and go to bed, what they eat and what they will not touch, whether they want company or their own space, what they used to do for work or for pleasure. Care that ignores all that might be safe, but it will not feel like living anywhere. For people living with dementia, the steadiness of the day does a lot of the work. Familiar faces, an unhurried pace and staff who know how to read what someone is telling them when the words are hard to find. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families are welcome to visit and we would encourage you to do so before making any decision. Please contact us and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Portland Street is a small residential care home in King's Lynn. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people living with mental health conditions, and being small is central to how the house works. Everybody knows everybody, changes get noticed quickly, and nobody turns into a case rather than a person. The people who live here have their own rooms, their own belongings and a real say in how the household runs. We take time to learn how each person communicates and what matters to them, because support that is not built on that is only supervision. From there we look at what somebody wants from their week, whether that is work, college, seeing people, getting out locally, or simply having a home that feels properly theirs. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family a rest and give the person staying a change of company with support they can rely on. We are Kalmia and Mallow, a residential care home in Thetford. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. With that range of people living together, a single routine would suit nobody, so we do not run one. People get up when they are ready, eat what appeals to them and spend their days as they choose. What stays constant is that staff are about, and that they know the people here well enough to notice when somebody is struggling with something they would not put into words. Support plans are written with the person and with anyone they want involved, and they are reviewed when circumstances change rather than only at set intervals. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, whether that is cooking, managing appointments or getting out independently, we build it up at their pace instead of deciding beforehand what is realistic. Communication matters enormously here. We take the time to learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure new staff learn it too before they work alone. We work closely with families, social workers, GPs and community teams, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Salcasa is a residential care home in Norwich supporting a mixed group of adults. Some of our residents are older people who need help with the practical parts of the day. Others are adults with a learning disability, autistic adults or people with a physical disability, and many are younger adults who want support to get on with their own lives. That mixture works because we plan for individuals rather than running one routine for the house. One person may want help to wash and dress and then to be left in peace. Another may want staff alongside them cooking, going into the city, getting to an appointment or working through something that has gone wrong. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, what they find difficult and what helps them settle, and we build the plan with them and with the people who know them well. Where somebody needs help to move about safely, the right equipment is in place and our staff are trained for it. Everyday life includes cooking, shopping, keeping your own room as you want it, choosing how to spend the day and getting out locally. Respite stays are available and give family carers a genuine break. If you are considering a place here, please come and spend some time with us before deciding anything.

We are Woodland Court Care Home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. With that range of needs in one home, planning has to be individual. We take time at the start to work out how somebody communicates, what they manage on their own, where they want help and what they would rather nobody did for them, and we change the plan when it stops describing reality. Where dementia and a sensory impairment sit together, which is common, we look at the simple explanation first. A hearing aid that is not working accounts for a great deal that otherwise gets recorded as confusion, and a room that somebody cannot make sense of will unsettle anyone. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most: enough time that a transfer is unhurried, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer it done. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and do not currently hold an overall rating.

Callum House provides residential care in Norwich for adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism and people with mental health needs. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. The particulars are where the work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves are all things we learn from the person rather than assume. For residents with mental health needs, consistency and a lack of fuss count for a great deal, along with staff who notice early when somebody is less well than they were. We also support people to have a life beyond the building, keeping up with family and friends and getting to the activities, groups, work or education that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We are 32 South Street, a residential care home in Sheringham, Norfolk. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with a mental health condition and people affected by alcohol and drug misuse, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Supporting people through difficulties of this kind asks for patience and consistency more than anything else. Progress is rarely a straight line, and a placement works best when somebody is not treated as a problem to be managed on the harder days. A settled environment, staff who do not take a bad day personally and are not easily shocked, and a routine that is there to lean on rather than to enforce do more than anything else we could offer. We work alongside community teams, GPs and social workers so that what happens here joins up with what happens elsewhere. People living here keep as much control over their own lives as they are able and wish to, covering ordinary decisions about the day and bigger ones about care and treatment. Where a decision needs support, we give support rather than substituting our judgement for theirs. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Clarence House Care Home is in Norwich. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. The care we give is residential rather than nursing. Staff are here day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For most people that combination works well and leaves their independence largely intact. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to make sense of will settle somebody more reliably than any activity programme. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what helps us understand them when words become difficult. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw. Respite and short stays are available, for planned breaks and for recovery. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to come and look round Clarence House.

    • Care Home

Grenville Court Care Home is in Norwich, and we provide residential care for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available as well. Most of what makes a care home good is ordinary detail rather than anything grand. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time to find their words instead of finishing their sentences, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Families usually hold that story and we ask for it early. We ought to be open with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have worked through the findings with our team and those areas are where our effort is concentrated at present. We would rather you heard it from us and then came and judged the place for yourself. Visitors are welcome on any ordinary day. Ring us and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Norfolk

Getting needs assessed

Fees, vacancies and waiting lists all become easier to discuss once someone independent has set down what the person actually needs, and that assessment is free to anyone who appears to require care whatever their savings. Assessment and funded placements in this county are handled by Norfolk County Council, whose assessor considers personal care, nutrition, mobility, medication, mental wellbeing and the risks of staying where the person lives now. The written outcome explains what support is needed and whether residential care is the way to provide it, and homes will want to read it before confirming they can meet those needs. A relative giving regular unpaid support is entitled to a carer's assessment of their own at the same time.

Working out the contribution

A financial assessment then sets capital and income against the national thresholds. Above the upper threshold a person normally meets the full cost, below it the council contributes, and the treatment of a property turns on whether a partner or a qualifying relative still lives in it. Deferred payment agreements allow a placement to be funded against a house that is not being sold at once, which matters in an area where a sale can take time. If health needs are substantial rather than simply personal care needs, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare should be assessed instead.

What the weekly fee reflects

Cost follows the size of the room and whether it has an en suite, the staffing level, the location of the home and how specialist the support must be, with dementia and learning disability provision generally staffed more heavily. Ask for a written breakdown and ask directly what falls outside it, because hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments and outings are routinely charged on top. Confirm how often fees are reviewed and what notice of an increase is given, and read the contract on hospital admissions and notice periods before signing.

Choosing between care homes in Norfolk

Making the ratings useful

Judgements here cover the entire scale, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, with some homes not yet rated. The grade condenses five separate assessments covering whether a service is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and which of those fell short changes everything. A home criticised over record keeping occupies a different position from one criticised over medication or safeguarding, and only the report itself distinguishes them. Check the date as well, since a judgement made some years ago may describe a home under an owner or manager who has since moved on.

Cutting the list down before you drive

Registration is the sharpest filter, because homes are approved for particular groups, whether older people, adults living with dementia, or adults with a learning disability or autism, and one that lacks the relevant registration cannot take a person on. Travel is the second consideration, and in a county where journeys between towns take longer than the map suggests, honest thinking about who will visit each week matters. Fee level is the third, and settling it before a viewing avoids disappointment afterwards.

What a visit should show you

Arrive at a busy hour, ideally near a mealtime, when a home is hardest to present artificially. Look at whether residents seem occupied and comfortable, whether staff address people by name and at eye level, and whether call bells are answered rather than left ringing. Ask how many permanent staff cover the night shift, what turnover has been over the past year, and how much agency cover is used. Ask what happens when someone's needs increase beyond what the home can manage, and ask to see the last fortnight of activities rather than a printed timetable.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Norfolk

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Norfolk?

Contact the adult social care team at Norfolk County Council and ask for one, whether you are the person needing care, a relative, or a professional such as a GP or hospital discharge nurse. There is no charge for the assessment and no means test to qualify for it. The assessor will discuss daily routines, health conditions, mobility and what happens on a bad day, so it helps to have someone present who knows the usual pattern of the week. The written outcome is what every later conversation about funding will rest on.

Can Norfolk County Council fund a residential care placement?

It may, depending on the outcome of two separate assessments. The care needs assessment has to establish that the person meets the national eligibility criteria and that residential care is the appropriate way to meet those needs. A financial assessment then compares capital and income against the published thresholds, so people above the upper limit generally fund themselves while those below receive a contribution. Norfolk County Council can also explain deferred payment arrangements where someone's money is tied up in a property.

What providers are included in this Norfolk listing?

258 providers appear here, all registered with the Care Quality Commission as residential care homes. Registration on that basis means they supply accommodation together with personal care, so help with washing, dressing, meals, mobility and medication comes from staff on site through the day and night. The homes are approved for different groups, some concentrating on older people and others on learning disability, autism or mental health support. Each profile records exactly what that home is registered to provide.

How does a residential care home differ from a nursing home?

A residential care home provides somewhere to live along with personal care from trained care staff, covering bathing, dressing, eating, moving about and taking medication. A nursing home is registered for all of that plus clinical care from a registered nurse who is present on the premises at all times. Every provider on this page is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. Should someone's health needs later require regular nursing attention, a fresh assessment would identify that and a move might become necessary.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Allow a few weeks where circumstances make it possible, because well regarded homes often operate waiting lists and vacancies do not appear on demand. That time makes second visits possible, allows inspection reports to be read properly and leaves room to question the contract rather than signing in haste. Where a hospital discharge is setting the pace, ask the discharge team what interim arrangements exist so a permanent decision is not made under pressure. Even at short notice, comparing two or three homes is far better than accepting the first bed offered.

What is worth asking on a visit to a care home in Norfolk?

Begin with staffing, asking how many permanent staff work by day and overnight and how much agency cover the home relies on. Ask how staff respond when a resident becomes unwell or distressed, how medication errors are recorded, and how quickly relatives are told when something has gone wrong. Cover the ordinary detail too, including visiting arrangements, laundry, whether a familiar GP can be retained and which charges sit outside the weekly fee. If you are invited to stay for a meal, take it, because mealtimes reveal how a home actually runs.
