A county of market towns, coastal resorts and scattered villages, Norfolk has its care homes catalogued here in one directory, so that provision on the coast can be compared with provision inland without visiting a dozen separate websites. Care Quality Commission judgements across the collection reach from Outstanding and Good through Requires Improvement to Inadequate, and a further group of homes has registered too recently to have been inspected and carries no rating yet. 258 providers match this search, each of them registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing setting. Assessment of what someone needs, and any decision about publicly funded support, rests with Norfolk County Council under the national eligibility rules that apply everywhere in England. Use the profiles below to reach the inspection report sitting behind each rating, since what inspectors observed and what they asked a provider to improve is the evidence that should decide which homes are worth your time.

- Care Home
Here at Melton House, we provide residential care for older adults in the heart of Wymondham, Norfolk. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment everyone here brings to the people we support each day. Our home welcomes a wide range of residents, including those living with dementia, those with physical disabilities, and younger adults who need residential care. We also offer respite stays for people who need short term support, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help someone recover and regain their confidence before returning home. We believe that moving into a care home is a significant moment for any individual and their family, so we take time to get to know each person properly before they arrive and throughout their stay with us. Understanding someone's history, preferences and routines matters enormously to us, and we work hard to make sure daily life here feels familiar and comfortable rather than institutional. The atmosphere at Melton House is friendly and unhurried. Staff and residents know one another well, and we think that familiarity and consistency make a real difference to how settled and secure people feel. Families are always welcome, and we encourage them to stay involved in the life of their loved one as much as they wish to be. Wymondham is a lovely market town with a strong sense of community, and we enjoy being part of it. Whether someone is with us for a short respite break or has made Melton House their long term home, we want them to feel genuinely cared for, respected and at ease. If you would like to find out more or arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you.

- Care Home
Ritson Lodge is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Great Yarmouth suits us. The sea is close, the front is a proper walk, and many of the people living here have known this part of Norfolk all their lives, which means the community keeps coming through the door. We encourage that, and visitors are welcome at whatever hour works for them rather than whatever suits our rota. Coming to live in a care home is a significant thing to do, and the first weeks matter more than any account of the building. We spend them learning about the person: what they did for a living, what they cannot be doing with, what time they have always had their breakfast, whether they would rather be in company or left in peace with the radio on. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them. Where a physical disability affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than the building. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

We are Park House, a residential care home in Great Yarmouth. We look after older people who are finding it difficult to manage at home on their own, and we also support younger adults whose needs suit a residential setting. Respite stays are available. We have kept our focus clear rather than trying to be all things to everyone. Residential care is what we do. Doing it properly means knowing each person well: their history, the work they did, the family names, what comforts them and what reliably unsettles them. Staff who carry that knowledge are the ones who notice quickly when somebody is unwell or out of sorts. Beyond that, much of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable. A decent breakfast at a time that suits you. Your own chair and your own belongings. A walk out when the weather allows. Company if you want it and quiet if you would rather, and somebody with the time to sit down and properly listen. We also think a home should stay part of its own town, so we support people to keep up the connections they already have in Great Yarmouth. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us and come and see the home.

Here at Shipdham Manor, we provide residential and dementia care for older people, younger adults, and those who need a shorter stay for respite. We are based in the village of Shipdham in Norfolk, and we take real pride in being part of this local community. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person and their family will ever make. It is rarely straightforward, and we do not treat it as though it is. When someone comes through our doors, whether for a permanent home or a temporary stay to recover or give a family member some rest, we want them to feel that this is a place where they genuinely belong. Our team works hard to know each resident as an individual. What matters to one person will be completely different to what matters to another, and we think that is exactly as it should be. We work alongside residents and their families to understand routines, preferences, and the small things that make daily life feel comfortable and familiar. For those living with dementia, we know how important the environment and the people around you are. Our approach focuses on maintaining dignity and supporting independence wherever possible, while making sure people feel safe and at ease throughout the day. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of good. That matters to us, not simply as a formal recognition, but because it reflects the effort and care that our team brings to their work every day. If you would like to find out more about Shipdham Manor, or you would like to arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you. We always welcome families who want to come and see us for themselves.

The Gables is a residential care home in Norwich. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people managing mental health conditions. Respite stays are available. Supporting people with quite different needs in one house only works if nobody is treated as a category. We take each person as they come, learn how they want their day to go and build support around that. Some residents want company and occupation from breakfast onwards. Others want quiet and predictability. There is room here for both. The house is run with the people in it rather than around them. Residents choose how their rooms look, what they eat, how they spend their time and what part they play in the household, and cooking, shopping and laundry are things people do with support where they can. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. For autistic residents we keep routines stable and give notice of change well in advance. Supporting mental health needs means patience and consistency, and working alongside community teams rather than separately from them. We involve families and advocates as much as each person wants, and we hold regular residents meetings where things can genuinely be raised. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

We are Beach View, a residential care home in Hunstanton, Norfolk. We look after older people, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We keep things deliberately homely. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you like to wake, where you want your meals, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those decisions stay with you. A good deal of what makes life here pleasant is quite ordinary, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. For people living with dementia the useful work is in the detail. Knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, being willing to go at their pace rather than the rota's. Done properly that prevents a great deal of distress before it starts. We also think a home should stay part of the place it sits in. The town and the coast are on the doorstep, and we support people to keep up the connections they already have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

The Elms Residential Care Home is a care home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. We provide a home for older people and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to support somebody through a period of recovery after a spell in hospital. What we aim to offer is a settled, familiar place where people keep their own routines and their own things around them. We ask about preferences in detail, because how somebody likes their morning to go is not a small matter when it shapes the rest of their day. Some residents want company and conversation from breakfast onwards. Others want a newspaper, a quiet chair and to be left in peace. Both are entirely reasonable and neither needs justifying to us. We should be straightforward with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have a plan of work in hand and we are progressing it alongside colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly rather than find it elsewhere. If you are considering The Elms for someone close to you, please come and visit. Look round properly, speak to our staff and residents, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed. We will answer plainly rather than steering you towards a brochure.

- Care Home
Broadland House is a residential care home in Great Yarmouth for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our everyday work is the ordinary business of a household run well. Help with washing, dressing and moving about, given at the person's own pace and as privately as possible. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here with real choice. Rooms that people make their own with their own furniture and pictures. Company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute the findings. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and had senior staff check the care actually being given rather than the care described on paper. That work is continuing and we are not going to claim it is finished. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions about it honestly than leave a family to discover it later, and we are happy to go through the detail with anyone who asks. With dementia we rely on knowing a person well and keeping the day predictable. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, and talk to the people who live here.

We at Talbot Care welcome you to a residential care home in the heart of Norwich, where compassionate support meets a genuine sense of belonging. For families across Norfolk exploring dementia care and residential care options, our home offers a warm and considered environment where every resident is valued as an individual. Nestled within the NR postcode area of Norwich, our setting benefits from the calm familiarity of local surroundings whilst remaining well placed for loved ones travelling from across the East of England. The wider community of Norwich provides a comforting backdrop, and we aim to make our home feel like a natural extension of the neighbourhood, blending peaceful daily rhythms with the reassurance of round the clock support. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of care our residents may need across different stages of life. We provide dedicated older person care and residential care for those who benefit from daily assistance in a supportive setting. Our dementia care is delivered with patience and understanding, focusing on preserving dignity, encouraging familiar routines, and creating moments of connection for both residents and their families. We also support adults living with mental health needs, recognising the importance of stability, trust, and personalised routines in promoting wellbeing. In addition, we welcome younger adults whose care needs are best met within a nurturing residential environment, offering tailored support that respects independence, personal goals, and individuality. For families navigating a period of transition, illness recovery, or simply in need of a trusted break from caring responsibilities at home, our respite care provides short term stays with the same warmth, attentiveness, and structure enjoyed by our permanent residents. What this means in practice is a home where care plans are shaped around the person, not the other way around. Families can expect open communication, a genuine willingness to listen, and a team committed to understanding each resident's history, preferences, and aspirations. Whether it is a favourite morning routine, a cherished hobby, or the importance of quiet time with a cup of tea, we believe the small details are what transform a house into a home. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our Care Quality Commission rating of Good, awarded following the inspection carried out on 23 July 2021. The CQC recognised Talbot Care as Good across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this rating offers reassurance that our home meets the standards expected of a trusted care provider, from the safety and effectiveness of the support we deliver, to the compassion of our approach, our responsiveness to changing needs, and the leadership that underpins daily life at the home. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. It is a decision often shaped by love, worry, and the desire to find somewhere that will treat a parent, partner, or relative with the same kindness you would offer yourself. Our aim is to make that journey easier by being transparent, approachable, and consistently attentive to the needs of both residents and the families who care for them. If you are considering residential care, dementia care, mental health support, or respite in Norwich, we warmly invite you to reach out and learn more about life at Talbot Care. Whether you would like an informal conversation, more information about our approach, or the opportunity to discuss a loved one's specific needs, we are here to help you take the next step with confidence and peace of mind.

Bay Tree House is a residential care home in Norwich, offering older people a comfortable place to live with support always close at hand. We try to keep the feel of a household, with days shaped by the people living them rather than by a timetable. A large part of our work is supporting residents living with dementia. We do that by learning who somebody is, keeping routines familiar and the day unhurried, explaining changes in advance, and treating distress as something with a cause rather than something to be contained. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and equally with company, fresh air, music and conversation for those who want them. Relatives are welcome whenever they can come, and we would far rather people dropped in than waited to be invited. Respite stays are available for people who need care for a short period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We prefer to say that at the outset rather than have a family discover it later. We understood the findings, we have been working through them steadily, and we are happy to talk about exactly what has changed. Please come and see us at an ordinary hour and judge the place on what you actually find.

We are The Close, a residential care home in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, supporting older people who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia. This is somebody's home first and a care setting second, and we try to keep that distinction real in how the day actually runs rather than only in how we describe it. People bring their own furniture, pictures and belongings, and keep as much of their own routine as they wish. Some enjoy the sitting room and company, others prefer their own space and quiet, and there is no expectation that anyone joins in with something simply because it is on the calendar. Support with washing, dressing, medication and getting about is offered at the person's pace, because being helped should not mean being hurried. For people living with dementia, we pay close attention to routine, familiar objects and the things that lower anxiety, and we take time to learn about a person's work, family and interests so that reassurance comes from something they recognise rather than from a stock phrase. We also provide respite stays, which give a family carer a planned break or help somebody regain confidence after illness before going home again. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us good overall. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit and to stay as involved as the person wants them to be. If you are looking at care homes around Kings Lynn, please come and see us.

Bonetti House, part of Cascade, is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out into the city. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Iceni House is a residential care home in Swaffham. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions. Respite stays are available. We would rather be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and anybody considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still to be put right. We would think less of a family that did not ask. What we are trying to offer is not complicated, though it is hard to do consistently. A comfortable house where people are looked after properly, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. That begins with asking how somebody has always lived and then actually working that way rather than fitting people to a routine that suits the rota. Dementia care here depends on familiarity. We keep staffing as steady as we can, we do not hurry anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what reassures a particular person. Supporting mental health needs means patience, consistency and working alongside community teams and GPs. Visitors are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place for yourself.

The Gables Residential Home is in Kings Lynn, providing residential care for older people from across west Norfolk. We support younger adults as well, and we offer respite stays. We are a residential home rather than a nursing one, and we would rather be clear about that from the start so families can plan properly. What we provide is patient, skilled help with everyday life: washing and dressing, medicines, mobility, meals worth looking forward to, company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. If somebody's health needs grow beyond what we can meet well, we will say so early and help think through what comes next. The feel of a home comes from its staff, so keeping a settled team is where most of our effort goes. When people stay, they learn the habits and preferences that make care feel personal rather than procedural, and residents stop having to explain themselves every morning. Kings Lynn is our town and residents are part of it. Visitors are welcome without appointments, and we would far rather hear too much from families than too little. Respite stays suit carers who need a proper break and people regaining their strength after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Victoria Hall is a residential care home in King's Lynn, Norfolk, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and for younger adults who need a supportive household. Respite stays are available as well. The first fortnight after a move matters a great deal, and we give it real thought. Before somebody arrives we want to know what time they wake, how they take their tea, what they cannot abide and who they want to be able to ring. Those details are what begin turning a strange room into their room. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do only as much as somebody needs. Where a resident can still manage something themselves, they keep it, and we are in no hurry to take things over. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person rather than managing a condition. We keep the day's rhythm steady and the surroundings familiar, give people time instead of finishing their sentences for them, and ask families about earlier life, because that knowledge is what makes sense of a mood or a repeated question. We would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one later, so families who tell us when something is not right are doing us a favour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

We encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures, because a room that looks like yours makes settling in far easier than one that looks like anybody's. The first few weeks matter a great deal and we do not rush them. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we ask families to tell us about the person rather than only about their needs. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather be upfront about that than leave you to find it elsewhere. We know which areas were raised, there is work under way, and we are happy to go through any of it. Please come and visit, ask us directly what has changed, and judge the home on what you see.

Heath Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Holt, Norfolk. We look after older people who need daily care, including many people living with dementia, and we also support people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people with a visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. The house is meant to feel like a home. People get up when they wake, eat food they actually enjoy and spend the day as they like, whether that is in company or quietly on their own. For someone living with dementia, that ordinary rhythm and the presence of familiar faces is the greater part of good care, and so is having enough time in the day that nobody is hurried through anything. Respite stays are part of what we do, giving a family carer a genuine rest or supporting someone through a period of recovery after illness or a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We were pleased with it, though the question we ask ourselves more often is whether people look settled and comfortable here week after week. If you would like to look round, please ring and come at a time that suits you. We are glad for people to see the home on an ordinary day rather than a prepared one.

Manton House is a residential care home in King's Lynn. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, along with respite and short stays. We keep staffing as steady as we can, we do not hurry anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what reassures a particular person, since it is rarely the same for two of them. Families often find this stage hard, and we try to give them honest information rather than comfortable reassurance. Visitors are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place for yourself.

Cohen House, part of Cascade, is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults living with mental health conditions. This is a home rather than a placement, and the household is arranged around the people living in it. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the parts of life that matter just as much: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and a settled, predictable routine matters greatly to most of the people we support. We give people time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we take care not to assume that shared circumstances mean shared wishes. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody see how the house feels first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit, meet the people who live here and see how the place actually works.

- Care Home
Hillcrest is a residential care home in Norwich, providing a settled home for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult. Caring for people living with dementia is a large part of what we do. We are not a nursing home, and it is worth being clear about that. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many older people that turns out to be exactly the right amount of support, because it takes away the effort and the worry without taking away the independence. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A familiar order to the day, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more surely than any programme of activities. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what makes sense of things when words begin to fail. Beyond the help they need, residents run their own days, and visitors are welcome rather than merely tolerated. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see Hillcrest for yourself.

Abbottswood Lodge is a residential care home in Norwich supporting adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism, and we offer planned respite stays as well as longer term places. This is somebody's home, and that governs how we work. People here have their own rooms, their own routines and their own views about how things should be done, and our staff fit around them rather than asking everybody to follow one pattern. We help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the running of a household, and we hold back wherever somebody can manage without us, because skills that go unused tend to disappear. For adults with learning disabilities and autism, the specifics are everything. How a person communicates, what makes a place feel bearable, how much warning they need before anything changes, and which parts of the day they want to handle alone are all things we learn from the person rather than from a file. When change cannot be avoided, we prepare for it carefully and at their pace. We also support people to have a life beyond the building, keeping up with family and friends and getting to the activities, groups, work or college that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a place here, please come and visit and talk to the people who already live with us.

Here at Regency Manor Care Home, we are proud to be part of the Hunstanton community in the heart of Norfolk. We provide a warm, homely environment where the people in our care feel safe, comfortable and genuinely valued as individuals. We support older adults across a range of needs, including residential care, dementia care and care for those living with a physical disability. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers some time to rest. Whatever brings someone to us, we make it our priority to understand who they are, what matters to them and how we can best support their daily life. Dementia care is something we take seriously here. We know that a diagnosis affects not just the individual but the whole family, and we work hard to create an environment that feels calm, familiar and reassuring. Our approach is person centred, meaning we look beyond a diagnosis to the individual person, their history, their preferences and their personality. Living in Hunstanton gives us a real sense of place. The town has a wonderful community spirit and being close to the Norfolk coast means our residents can enjoy that connection to the local area, whether through outings, visits or simply the familiar surroundings of home. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we never underestimate that. We welcome anyone to come and visit us, have a look around and ask whatever questions they need to. There is no pressure, just an honest conversation about whether we are the right fit. We look forward to welcoming you to Regency Manor.

Shaftesbury John Grooms Court is a residential care home in Norwich in Norfolk. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite stays are available. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Where a physical disability or sensory loss affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building, and we are careful that help with one task does not quietly become help with everything. Small habits carry a lot of weight: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture exactly where it lives, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so that everybody responds identically, and keep checking we have understood. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

St John's House is a residential care home in Norwich, Norfolk. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. We ask when someone likes to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the afternoon. Help with personal care, meals and medication is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage for themselves is protected. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure rather than argue when someone is unsettled. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms are arranged, and for residents with physical disabilities we pay attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that and clear about what it means. It raises what we have to deliver on an ordinary day, and families are welcome to come and hold us to it.

Here at The Manor House in North Walsham, Norfolk, we provide residential care for a wide range of people, and we take real pride in making this a place where everyone feels genuinely at home. We support older adults, people living with dementia, younger adults, and individuals with learning disabilities or autism. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a hospital admission or to give family carers a much needed break. Whatever brings someone to us, we aim to make sure their time here is comfortable, meaningful and as individual as they are. Dementia care is something we think about carefully. We understand how disorienting and unsettling it can be for both the person living with dementia and the people who love them. Our approach is calm and consistent, built around familiarity and small moments of connection rather than rigid routines. For residents with learning disabilities or autism, we work hard to understand what matters to each person, what helps them feel settled, what they enjoy, and what they find difficult. Support is shaped around the individual rather than the other way around. We are pleased to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment our whole team brings to the people who live here. That said, we never see it as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can do things better and listening to residents and families when they tell us what is working and what is not. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to come and visit us. North Walsham is a lovely part of Norfolk, and The Manor House is very much part of this community.

St Edmunds Residential Home is in Gorleston, Norfolk. We provide residential care for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult, and caring for people living with dementia is a large part of what we do. We are deliberately clear about what we are. This is not a nursing home. It is a place to live, where the parts of the day that have become hard are taken care of and the rest still belongs to the person. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing and medication. Meals are cooked on the premises, laundry gets done, and doctors and district nurses come in when somebody needs them. Dementia care comes down to consistency and to knowing the person. Hellesdon Bungalows is a residential care setting in Norwich supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run the bungalows as homes rather than units. The people living here decide the everyday things: what is cooked, what time the day starts, whether today is one for going out or staying in, who comes to visit and when. Staff are here to make those choices workable and to step back from what somebody can manage alone or wants to learn to manage. Communication gets careful attention. A number of the people we support get their point across in ways other than speech, and understanding somebody properly is what allows them to direct their own life rather than have it arranged around them. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We would rather put that in front of you than leave you to discover it. We know which areas were raised, we have work under way, and we will go through the detail with any family considering a place here or already trusting us with a relative. Merrimore House is a residential care home in Hunstanton. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people with a learning disability or autism, people living with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also take respite bookings. Because people arrive here by very different routes, we do not run the home to one pattern. Some residents need a good deal of hands on support through the day. Others mainly want a settled base, a bit of structure and somebody reliable to check in with. We work out which is which by asking, and we keep asking, because what somebody needs on arrival is rarely what they need a year later. People keep their own belongings around them, choose how the day goes and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Families are welcome throughout the day and we would rather they came often and informally than waited for an invitation. Being on this stretch of the Norfolk coast is part of the appeal for many of the people who live here, and we make use of it. Lancaster House is a residential care home in Thetford, Norfolk. The people living here include older people, many of them living with dementia, along with younger adults and people managing mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to provide somewhere settled for a shorter period. Because our residents need quite different things from us, support is planned with each person rather than run to a single pattern. People keep their own rooms, their own belongings and their own routines, and they decide how much of the day to spend in company and how much on their own. We ask about the small preferences in detail and expect our staff to follow them, since those details are most of what separates a home from an institution. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps more than anything. Familiar staff, routines that change only when there is a reason, and the patience to understand what somebody means when words have become unreliable. We also work closely with mental health and social work colleagues, because joined up support tends to be the support that holds. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take it as evidence that the everyday work is being done properly and we keep looking at the detail rather than assuming it holds on its own. If you are considering a care home in Thetford for someone close to you, you are welcome to visit, meet our staff and residents and ask us anything.

Phoenix House is a small residential home in Kings Lynn. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays. Being small is the point. This is a house rather than a unit, and it is run with the people who live in it. Meals, shopping, laundry, what goes on the walls and how the household works are all decisions people take part in, and support is built around what somebody wants from their life rather than around a timetable that suits the rota. That might mean help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and flag changes well in advance, because unexpected change is usually the hardest part of living anywhere. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them well. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand and stay briefly before committing to anything longer. Kings Lynn is home for the people who live here and we support them to use local shops, leisure facilities and groups. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Lindum is a residential care home in Norwich. We support adults who have a learning disability or autism, people living with mental ill health and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. What we are aiming for is an ordinary life with the right support behind it. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, they decide how their week is spent, and they are supported to do things for themselves wherever possible rather than having things done to them. Cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling about, keeping up work or college and staying in touch with family matter more than anything written on a form. Our team takes time to learn how each person communicates, including those who do not use speech, and we record what we learn so that everyone supports somebody in the same way. Where physical disabilities are involved we make sure the equipment and the practical help are right, so that support with moving and personal care is safe, comfortable and dignified. When life becomes difficult we look for the cause rather than the label and plan ahead with the person about what actually helps. We work alongside GPs, community mental health teams, social workers and families and we keep everyone informed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. High Haven is a residential care home in Downham Market in Norfolk. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we welcome respite guests as well as people moving in permanently. We are not a large home and we have no wish to be. Being smaller means people are known properly rather than in outline, that our staff notice when somebody is not themselves, and that the day can be arranged around the people living here rather than the other way about. Getting up when you like, eating what you want, having your own things around you and seeing visitors whenever they call are ordinary parts of life and we treat them as such. Our staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, without making a fuss of it. For people living with dementia we keep things familiar and unhurried, and we ask families to tell us about a person's life in detail, because knowing somebody's history is nearly always what allows us to reassure them rather than correct them. Respite stays matter to us as well. Caring for a relative at home is demanding work and a planned break is often what makes it possible to keep going. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and look round, meet the team and speak to relatives of people who live here.

We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people living with mental ill health, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to keep the feel of a household rather than an institution. Rooms are personal, people get up and go to bed when it suits them, nobody is made to join in with anything and visitors are welcome without booking. If somebody has always taken their time over breakfast, that can carry on here. Staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, and they do it in a way that keeps somebody's dignity intact. For people living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and we ask relatives to tell us about a person's history because that is nearly always what helps us understand what they are asking for. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work alongside community teams and GPs and plan with the person, in calm periods, for the times that are harder. Supporting people of different ages together takes thought, so we plan individually rather than expecting everybody to fit one pattern. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round, meet the team and speak to relatives of people who already live here before deciding anything.

Here at Gorselands Residential Home, we provide care for older people in the heart of Hunstanton, a town we think is one of the loveliest spots on the Norfolk coast. Our residents benefit from being close to the sea, the local shops and the kind of community feel that makes Hunstanton such a welcoming place to call home. We offer residential care, dementia care and respite care, which means we support people at different stages and with varying needs. Some residents come to us for a short break while their usual carer has time to rest, and others make Gorselands their permanent home. Whatever brings someone to us, we try to make sure the transition feels as calm and straightforward as possible, both for the individual and for their family. We want to be straightforward about where we are as a home. Our most recent CQC rating is "requires improvement", and we take that seriously. We have been working through the feedback we received and making real changes to the way we do things, from how we record and review care plans to how we communicate with families. We would rather be honest about this than gloss over it, and we welcome anyone who would like to visit and see the progress we are making for themselves. Day to day, we focus on getting the basics right: good food, genuine conversation, activities that people actually enjoy and a routine that feels comfortable without being rigid. We get to know each resident properly, because understanding who someone is and what matters to them makes everything else easier. If you are considering Gorselands for yourself or someone you love, please do get in touch or come for a visit. We are always happy to talk things through.

Ashville House is a residential care home in Downham Market, Norfolk, caring for older people who need help with everyday life. We also take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks, whether to recover after illness or to give a family carer a genuine break. We aim to run a homely place rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, choose how they spend the day and eat food that is worth sitting down to. Staff work with people they know well, which is what makes it possible to notice quickly when somebody is not their usual self and to act on it with the GP or district nurse. We would rather be honest with you about where we are. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission found that we require improvement overall. We have taken the findings seriously, we have an action plan we are working through with the whole staff team, and we are happy to talk any family through exactly what was raised, what has changed and what is still in progress. Visitors are welcome at Ashville House whenever it suits them, and we would much rather hear a concern the day it arises. If you are looking at care in the Downham Market area, please come and see the home and judge it for yourself.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Norwich, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed, because what a person can still manage themselves is worth protecting. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. Where sight or hearing is poor, small habits matter a great deal: saying who you are on coming into a room, speaking clearly and not moving things about without saying so. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round before deciding anything. We will be straight with you about whether we can meet the needs you describe.

- Care Home
Redgate House Residential Home is a care home in Thetford in Norfolk. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays. We think a care home should feel like a house that people live in, so we try to keep the atmosphere ordinary. Visitors come at the times that suit them. There is usually something going on in the lounge and nobody has to join it. Staff sit down and talk properly rather than passing through on the way to a task. People here choose when they get up, what they wear, what they eat and whether they want company or their own space. Dementia care depends on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we look for the cause instead of simply trying to settle them. Relatives very often know exactly what helps, and we would far rather be told at the start than work it out over months. The practical things get proper attention as well: food people actually want, medication managed carefully, quick response when somebody is unwell, and honest conversations with families when circumstances shift. Thetford and the surrounding area keep the community coming through our door, and we encourage that. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and families what needs our attention.

Westfield House is a residential care home in Dereham, Norfolk. We support older people and adults with learning disabilities, including autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Because the people who live here have quite different needs, we take care to be specific rather than general. For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with washing and dressing, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, help to manage money and appointments, and support to get out to a job, a course or a club. Each plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. We pay close attention to how each person communicates. Some people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or a device, and others tell us a great deal through their behaviour, so we take the time to learn it and write down what we learn. Respite matters here too. A planned short stay gives a family carer a genuine break and lets the person get to know us gradually rather than arriving in a crisis. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit.

Our team genuinely cares about the people who live with us, and we work hard every day to make sure that each resident feels safe, comfortable and valued as an individual. We support people with a range of needs, including dementia care and short term respite stays for those who need a break from their usual routine or whose families need some time to rest. Whether someone comes to us for a few weeks or makes Harker House their long term home, we treat every person with the same respect and attention. We are proud to hold a "good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the effort our team puts in and the standards we hold ourselves to. We take time to get to know each resident, understanding what they enjoy, what matters to them and how they like their day to look. Bungay House is a residential care home in Bungay, Norfolk. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia and people living with mental health conditions. The care we give is residential rather than nursing. Staff are here day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For most people that combination works well and leaves their independence largely intact. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to make sense of will settle somebody more reliably than any activity programme. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what helps us understand them when words become difficult. Supporting younger adults alongside older residents takes planning, and we build around the individual rather than assuming everybody wants the same week. Bungay is a pleasant town to live in and we help people get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We at Mill House are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the heart of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, providing a warm and welcoming home for adults who need support with everyday living, including those living with mental health needs. Our home is thoughtfully situated within the PE postcode area, giving residents the benefit of a familiar Norfolk setting whilst remaining close to the amenities, greenery and community life that Kings Lynn is known for. We have created a comfortable environment where residents can feel settled, safe and genuinely at home, with communal spaces designed to encourage connection and quieter corners for those moments when a little peace is preferred. Residential care sits at the core of what we do, offering round the clock support with personal care, daily routines and the small but important details that help each day run smoothly. We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, and our approach is centred on preserving the dignity, independence and individuality of every person who lives with us. We also provide specialised support for adults living with mental health conditions. For us, this means taking the time to truly understand each resident, working patiently alongside them and their loved ones to build trust, encourage stability and support wellbeing in a way that feels reassuring rather than clinical. Families can take comfort in knowing that their relative is cared for by a team who recognises the importance of consistency, kindness and a genuinely person centred approach. In addition, our respite care offering provides valuable short term stays for those who need a period of recovery, a planned break, or simply the reassurance of professional support whilst a regular carer takes some time for themselves. Whether the stay is for a week or several, respite guests receive the same warmth and attention as our permanent residents from the moment they arrive. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, where Mill House was rated Good overall. We were also rated Good across every individual domain, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well led. For families, this independent recognition offers welcome reassurance that the care provided here meets the standards you would rightly expect for someone you love. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we know it is rarely a straightforward one. If you are exploring options in Kings Lynn or the wider Norfolk area, we would be delighted to speak with you, answer your questions and, when the time feels right, welcome you to visit us at Mill House to see for yourself the caring community we have built.

Hickling House is a residential care home in Norwich. We support older people, including those living with dementia, and some younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We want the home to feel like a household rather than an institution. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy, and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others want their own room, their own television and a quiet word with someone who is not rushing off. Both are entirely reasonable. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we keep it unfussy. Familiar staff, a steady rhythm to the day, surroundings that stay where people expect them to be, and time taken to learn a person's history. Families often supply the detail that makes sense of everything, such as a working life spent on early shifts or a lifelong dislike of crowds. When someone becomes upset, we look for the cause. Rooms are personalised from the start, because a room that looks like yours feels different from one that looks like everybody else's. Visitors are welcome and are not treated as an interruption. Respite stays suit family carers needing a rest and people recovering from illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone considering Hickling House is welcome to come and look round, meet residents and ask us anything.

Engelhard Lodge is a residential care home in Norwich, Norfolk. We care for older adults who are no longer able to manage at home, and our intention is that people should feel they live here, with their own things around them and their own way of doing things respected. Our residential care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and company, given in a way that protects independence rather than quietly removing it. Many residents live with dementia, and we put our effort into consistency: familiar faces, a recognisable routine and reassurance offered as often as it is needed rather than once. We also support residents living with mental health conditions, where a settled environment and staff who spot early changes count for a great deal, and residents with physical disabilities or with a visual or hearing impairment, where we adapt how we communicate and how we help people move about so that dignity is never the thing that gets sacrificed. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a genuine rest and offering a gentle way of trying the home first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Mandalay is a residential care home in King's Lynn. Those living here include older people, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. A household this mixed means one routine will not fit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person, and we accept the answer when it is to be left alone. Where somebody can do a thing themselves we support them to keep at it even when stepping in would be quicker. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. Avery Lodge is a residential home in Great Yarmouth providing care for older people who can no longer manage at home without help. We are a home rather than a facility, and we run it accordingly. People choose their own routines, keep their own belongings about them and are supported to carry on doing whatever they still can. Our staff help with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with meals, and they do it patiently, because being hurried is one of the things older people mind most. A good deal of what we offer is company. Many people arrive after a long period of living alone, and the change from silence to having somebody to talk to over breakfast does more good than any amount of organised activity. That said, there is plenty going on for those who want it. We keep a close watch on health, know people well enough to notice when somebody is not right, and involve the GP early rather than waiting. Respite stays are available where somebody needs care for a short period or a family carer needs a break. Families are welcome to visit and to be as involved as they wish. We are Ellacombe, a residential care home in Norwich. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, how sociable you feel today: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Ellacombe for someone, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We would rather answer that question fully than have it hanging over the conversation.

St Nicholas House is a residential care home in Dereham. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, along with respite and short stays. We are the size of place where everybody knows everybody. Staff know who is up early, who wants a late breakfast, who likes company and who would sooner be left alone with the radio. None of that appears in a policy, but it is most of what makes a care home somewhere a person could actually live. When somebody moves in we take time over their history. Work, family, places, music, faith, the things that shaped them. It helps us support people living with dementia, and it helps our staff see a person rather than a set of needs. Dementia care here depends on familiarity and on not rushing anyone. We keep staffing as steady as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what reassures a particular resident, since it is rarely the same for two of them. Families get honest updates from us rather than comfortable ones. Meals are cooked here and residents tell us what they want on the menu. There is something going on most days, and no obligation to take part. Visitors are welcome through the day and can stay for a meal. What care homes cost in Norfolk, per week
| Type of care | What the council pays | What self-funders are typically asked |
|---|---|---|
| Residential care Middle half of prices from 44 East homes. Median £1,582. | Varies by council | £1,421 to £1,708 |
| Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935. | Varies by council | £1,800 to £2,126 |
| Residential dementia care Middle half of prices from 33 East homes. Median £1,785. | Not published separately | £1,602 to £1,877 |
| Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940. | Not published separately | £1,870 to £2,100 |
Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.
Arranging and funding a care home place in Norfolk
Getting needs assessed
Fees, vacancies and waiting lists all become easier to discuss once someone independent has set down what the person actually needs, and that assessment is free to anyone who appears to require care whatever their savings. Assessment and funded placements in this county are handled by Norfolk County Council, whose assessor considers personal care, nutrition, mobility, medication, mental wellbeing and the risks of staying where the person lives now. The written outcome explains what support is needed and whether residential care is the way to provide it, and homes will want to read it before confirming they can meet those needs. A relative giving regular unpaid support is entitled to a carer's assessment of their own at the same time.
Working out the contribution
A financial assessment then sets capital and income against the national thresholds. Above the upper threshold a person normally meets the full cost, below it the council contributes, and the treatment of a property turns on whether a partner or a qualifying relative still lives in it. Deferred payment agreements allow a placement to be funded against a house that is not being sold at once, which matters in an area where a sale can take time. If health needs are substantial rather than simply personal care needs, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare should be assessed instead.
What the weekly fee reflects
Cost follows the size of the room and whether it has an en suite, the staffing level, the location of the home and how specialist the support must be, with dementia and learning disability provision generally staffed more heavily. Ask for a written breakdown and ask directly what falls outside it, because hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments and outings are routinely charged on top. Confirm how often fees are reviewed and what notice of an increase is given, and read the contract on hospital admissions and notice periods before signing.
Choosing between care homes in Norfolk
Making the ratings useful
Judgements here cover the entire scale, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, with some homes not yet rated. The grade condenses five separate assessments covering whether a service is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and which of those fell short changes everything. A home criticised over record keeping occupies a different position from one criticised over medication or safeguarding, and only the report itself distinguishes them. Check the date as well, since a judgement made some years ago may describe a home under an owner or manager who has since moved on.
Cutting the list down before you drive
Registration is the sharpest filter, because homes are approved for particular groups, whether older people, adults living with dementia, or adults with a learning disability or autism, and one that lacks the relevant registration cannot take a person on. Travel is the second consideration, and in a county where journeys between towns take longer than the map suggests, honest thinking about who will visit each week matters. Fee level is the third, and settling it before a viewing avoids disappointment afterwards.
What a visit should show you
Arrive at a busy hour, ideally near a mealtime, when a home is hardest to present artificially. Look at whether residents seem occupied and comfortable, whether staff address people by name and at eye level, and whether call bells are answered rather than left ringing. Ask how many permanent staff cover the night shift, what turnover has been over the past year, and how much agency cover is used. Ask what happens when someone's needs increase beyond what the home can manage, and ask to see the last fortnight of activities rather than a printed timetable.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Norfolk
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Norfolk?
Contact the adult social care team at Norfolk County Council and ask for one, whether you are the person needing care, a relative, or a professional such as a GP or hospital discharge nurse. There is no charge for the assessment and no means test to qualify for it. The assessor will discuss daily routines, health conditions, mobility and what happens on a bad day, so it helps to have someone present who knows the usual pattern of the week. The written outcome is what every later conversation about funding will rest on.
Can Norfolk County Council fund a residential care placement?
It may, depending on the outcome of two separate assessments. The care needs assessment has to establish that the person meets the national eligibility criteria and that residential care is the appropriate way to meet those needs. A financial assessment then compares capital and income against the published thresholds, so people above the upper limit generally fund themselves while those below receive a contribution. Norfolk County Council can also explain deferred payment arrangements where someone's money is tied up in a property.
What providers are included in this Norfolk listing?
258 providers appear here, all registered with the Care Quality Commission as residential care homes. Registration on that basis means they supply accommodation together with personal care, so help with washing, dressing, meals, mobility and medication comes from staff on site through the day and night. The homes are approved for different groups, some concentrating on older people and others on learning disability, autism or mental health support. Each profile records exactly what that home is registered to provide.
How does a residential care home differ from a nursing home?
A residential care home provides somewhere to live along with personal care from trained care staff, covering bathing, dressing, eating, moving about and taking medication. A nursing home is registered for all of that plus clinical care from a registered nurse who is present on the premises at all times. Every provider on this page is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. Should someone's health needs later require regular nursing attention, a fresh assessment would identify that and a move might become necessary.
How far ahead should a family start looking?
Allow a few weeks where circumstances make it possible, because well regarded homes often operate waiting lists and vacancies do not appear on demand. That time makes second visits possible, allows inspection reports to be read properly and leaves room to question the contract rather than signing in haste. Where a hospital discharge is setting the pace, ask the discharge team what interim arrangements exist so a permanent decision is not made under pressure. Even at short notice, comparing two or three homes is far better than accepting the first bed offered.
What is worth asking on a visit to a care home in Norfolk?
Begin with staffing, asking how many permanent staff work by day and overnight and how much agency cover the home relies on. Ask how staff respond when a resident becomes unwell or distressed, how medication errors are recorded, and how quickly relatives are told when something has gone wrong. Cover the ordinary detail too, including visiting arrangements, laundry, whether a familiar GP can be retained and which charges sit outside the weekly fee. If you are invited to stay for a meal, take it, because mealtimes reveal how a home actually runs.
