About Us
Shaftesbury John Grooms Court is a residential care home in Norwich in Norfolk. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite stays are available.
We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer.
Where a physical disability or sensory loss affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building, and we are careful that help with one task does not quietly become help with everything. Small habits carry a lot of weight: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture exactly where it lives, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working.
Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so that everybody responds identically, and keep checking we have understood.
The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.
