Care homes in West Sussex do not all sit at the same level of inspected quality, and the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement across this list, with a further group of homes not yet rated. Two hundred and seventeen residential care homes match the search, each one registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on the premises. Where money forms part of the question, West Sussex County Council is the body that carries out a care needs assessment and decides whether someone qualifies for funded support, so approaching the council early tends to save time later on. A rating on its own is only a summary, though, and it will not tell you how a home feels on an ordinary weekday. Open the profiles that look promising, read the full inspection report sitting behind each judgement, and let the detail in those reports shape the questions you put to a manager before anyone commits to a move.

- Care Home
Homewood is a residential care home in Worthing supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are saying so at the start rather than leaving it for a family to discover. We know which areas were identified, work is under way on them, and we will go through the detail honestly with anybody who asks. The work itself is about ordinary life supported well. The house belongs to the people who live in it, so the decisions that matter belong to them. What goes on the shopping list. How a bedroom looks. Whether Saturday means going out or staying in. Support is planned individually and reviewed as people change, because confidence and ambition do not stand still. For autistic people, we treat the environment as part of the care rather than the background. Noise, lighting, changes of staff and short notice can shape a whole week, so we plan for them properly. Respite stays give a family carer a genuine break with support in place for the person staying. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and form your own view of the home.

- Care Home
Hobbs Field is a residential care home in Horsham. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people with sight or hearing loss. Because the people who live here want very different things from their days, we plan individually rather than running the house to one routine. Some are out a good deal, at activities, at work or seeing family. Others prefer things quiet and predictable, and neither is treated as a problem. Support is agreed with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, and we take the trouble to learn it properly rather than guessing. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time a person prefers. For people living with dementia we keep routines steady and staff familiar, and we use what relatives tell us about somebody's history in conversation and to settle things when they are anxious. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, we adjust how we communicate and make the building easier to navigate. Families and friends are welcome whenever they want to come. Short respite stays are available, which can also be a good way of seeing whether we suit before anyone commits. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to look round.

We at Lakeview Grange are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the beautiful cathedral city of Chichester, West Sussex. As a dedicated residential care home, we provide a warm, welcoming environment where residents can feel truly at home, supported by a team who understand that every individual deserves personalised, respectful care. Nestled within the PO postcode area, our home benefits from the peaceful charm of Chichester and its surrounding countryside. The city itself is known for its rich heritage, elegant streets, and close proximity to the South Downs and the Sussex coast, offering residents and visiting families a tranquil yet vibrant setting. Our location makes it easy for loved ones from across West Sussex and the wider South East to visit regularly and stay connected. At Lakeview Grange, we specialise in a broad range of care needs, ensuring that we can support residents through many stages of life. Our older person care and residential care focus on providing everyday support with dignity, whether that involves help with personal care, medication, mobility, or simply companionship throughout the day. For those living with dementia, our team offers gentle, consistent support designed to reduce anxiety, encourage familiarity, and promote moments of joy and connection with family and friends. We also welcome residents living with a physical disability, as well as those with visual or hearing impairments, adapting our approach so that each person can continue to enjoy independence, communication, and meaningful engagement in daily life. Our support extends to younger adults who may benefit from a caring residential setting, and we offer respite care for families who need short term support, whether following a hospital stay, during a family holiday, or simply to give a regular carer a well earned break. In practice, this breadth of specialism means families can feel reassured that their loved one will be understood as a whole person, not defined by a single diagnosis or need. We take time to learn about each resident's life story, preferences, and routines, working closely with families to shape care that feels familiar and comforting. Lakeview Grange is currently awaiting its first Care Quality Commission inspection and therefore holds a status of Not Yet Rated. Whilst we look forward to welcoming the CQC and demonstrating the standards we uphold every day, we warmly encourage prospective families to visit us in person, meet our team, and see for themselves the quality of care, warmth, and community that defines our home. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we are here to walk alongside you at every step. If you would like to arrange a visit, ask questions, or simply have a friendly conversation about your loved one's needs, please do get in touch. At Lakeview Grange, you will find a home built on kindness, respect, and genuine care.

The Martlets is a care home in East Preston, West Sussex, providing both nursing and residential care. Having qualified nurses on the team alongside our care staff means we can look after people whose health needs go beyond a residential setting, and that residents need not move on each time those needs change. We care for older adults, managing medication, nutrition, skin care, pain and comfort while helping with washing, dressing, meals and moving about in a way that leaves people as independent as they can be. We keep in close contact with GPs and community health teams so that care is properly joined up. Dementia care is a significant part of our work and rests on familiar faces, a settled routine and taking the time to learn what reassures each individual. We also support younger adults whose conditions require nursing care, planning their days around their own interests. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would sooner tell you that ourselves than have you find it later and wonder what else went unsaid. The areas identified are where our effort is concentrated at present, and we are glad to discuss them with any family considering us.

As a dedicated residential care home specialising in older person care and dementia support, we provide a warm and welcoming home for those who need a little extra help in their daily lives. Our specialisms in older person care, residential care and dementia care mean that we are well placed to support a range of needs. For residents living with dementia, we understand how important familiarity, patience and compassionate routine can be, and we work closely with each individual and their loved ones to create a sense of continuity and security. For those needing residential support, we focus on preserving independence wherever possible, whilst offering the reassurance of attentive help with everyday tasks such as personal care, mealtimes and medication. In practice, this means families can feel confident that their relative is being looked after with dignity, kindness and genuine understanding of what matters to them. We believe in honesty and transparency about our quality of care. Our most recent CQC inspection, carried out in November 2025, gave us an overall rating of Requires Improvement. Within this, we were rated Good for being Effective and Caring, recognition of the warm relationships between our team and the people we support, and the positive outcomes residents experience day to day. The inspection also identified areas where we need to do better, particularly in the domains of Safe, Responsive and Well led. We take these findings seriously and are actively working on a programme of improvements to ensure that every aspect of life at Barlavington Manor meets the high standards that residents and families rightly expect. We welcome open conversations about our progress and are committed to building on the strengths the inspection identified. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand how much thought, emotion and care goes into that journey. If you are considering residential or dementia care for a loved one in the Petworth area, we would be delighted to hear from you, answer your questions and arrange a visit so you can see our home for yourself. Here at Bradshaw Lodge, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, people living with dementia, those with physical disabilities, and people with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults who need residential care and support. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that trust lightly. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure every person who lives here feels genuinely at home, respected, and listened to. We take time to get to know each resident as an individual, learning about their history, their preferences, and the things that matter most to them in everyday life. For those living with dementia, we work hard to create an environment that feels calm, familiar, and reassuring. We know that consistency and understanding go a long way, and our team approaches every interaction with patience and care. Supporting people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments is something we take seriously. We think carefully about how we communicate, how we adapt our environment, and how we assist each person in maintaining as much independence as possible. We believe that good care is built on genuine relationships. When residents and families feel comfortable raising concerns, sharing ideas, or simply having a conversation, that tells us we are doing something right. We welcome family involvement and encourage loved ones to remain a meaningful part of daily life here. Bradshaw Lodge is registered with the Care Quality Commission, and we are committed to continuous improvement in everything we do. If you would like to find out more or arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you.

- Care Home
Parkside Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Worthing, and we look after older people who need more support than can comfortably be managed at home. Moving into a care home is a considerable step, so our first job is to make somebody feel that this is their home rather than somewhere they have been placed. We keep to the rhythms people bring with them. If someone has always risen late, taken tea rather than coffee, or preferred a quiet corner to a busy room, that is what we work around. Families tell us the small details matter most, and we write them down and pass them on so that nobody has to explain themselves twice. A number of the people living here are living with dementia. We try to meet that with patience, familiar faces and a calm pace, keeping the day predictable and giving people time to do things at their own speed rather than ours. Relatives are welcome, and we would always rather they felt part of daily life here than visitors to it. We also offer respite stays, whether that is planned relief for a family carer, a period of recovery after a spell in hospital, or a chance to try the home before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we keep working at it. You are very welcome to come and see the home for yourself.

Baytree House is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We aim to run a household rather than an institution. People choose how they spend their days, take part in cooking, shopping and looking after the house if they want to, and arrange their rooms as they please. Support is agreed with each person, written so that they can understand and check it, and reviewed with them rather than decided about them. Most of what makes support work is attention to detail. We learn how somebody communicates, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and what helps on a difficult day. For autistic residents we take particular care over predictability, quiet space and clear information about what happens next. We also offer respite stays, giving families a planned break while their relative is somewhere familiar. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that ourselves than have you come across it elsewhere. We know which areas were identified, we have an improvement plan and we are working through it with the staff team. Camowen is a residential care home in Worthing supporting older people, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. Younger adults whose needs are best met in a residential setting are welcome too, and we offer respite stays. Our work is the ordinary business of a day done attentively. Helping somebody get up and dressed the way they prefer. Serving food worth sitting down to. Making sure there is company when it is wanted and quiet when it is not. Noticing quickly when a person is not themselves and doing something about it. For people living with dementia, familiarity carries most of the weight. Consistent faces, a predictable shape to the day, and staff who neither hurry nor correct. Where somebody lives with a mental health condition, we work alongside community teams so that a hard period is met with patience. For people with sight or hearing loss, we take care over how we announce ourselves and whether what we said has actually landed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit on an ordinary day.

- Care Home
The Progress Project is a residential care home in Worthing in West Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays. Our name reflects what we are actually for, which is helping people move on rather than settle permanently where they are. That does not mean pushing anybody. It means keeping the door open, taking seriously what somebody says they want their life to look like, and doing the unglamorous groundwork that makes it possible: confidence with money, cooking, travel, appointments, work or study, keeping in touch with people. Supporting mental health here is largely about steadiness rather than intervention. We keep to arrangements we have made. We notice when somebody seems unlike themselves without turning it into an interrogation. We make it easy to talk without a formal appointment, and we are as reliable on the difficult weeks as on the good ones. Progress is rarely a straight line and our job is not to be surprised by that. This is people's home in the meantime and we treat it accordingly. Rooms are theirs to arrange. People decide how their days go and who they see. We knock, we ask rather than assume, and we are quite prepared to be disagreed with. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what needs to change.

Coppice Close is a residential care home in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and the people living here include both younger adults and older people. Because that is a wide mix, the way we work has to be genuinely individual rather than individual in name only. We take time to learn how each person communicates, what they can do for themselves, where they want a hand and what makes a day harder, and we write our support plans with the person in language they can actually use. For someone with a sensory impairment, that includes making sure communication works properly rather than assuming it does, and checking that glasses and hearing aids are doing their job. For an autistic person it often means understanding sensory needs and keeping routines predictable so the house feels safe. What we are aiming for is not simply a well run home. It is that people here get on with the things they want to do, whether that is work, college, seeing family or going out without an escort. We also offer respite stays, arranged in advance so the person knows us before they arrive. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Here at Rookwood Residential Home, we provide warm and attentive care for older people in the heart of Burgess Hill, West Sussex. We are proud to offer residential care and respite care in a setting that genuinely feels like home, where every person who comes through our doors is treated with dignity, respect and a real sense of belonging. We know that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. Our team takes that responsibility seriously. We take the time to get to know each resident as an individual, understanding their routines, preferences and life history, so that the care we provide reflects who they truly are rather than simply what they need. Our respite care is particularly valued by families who need short term support, whether to allow a family carer to rest, or to help someone recover and regain confidence following an illness or hospital stay. We aim to make every stay, however brief, feel settled and comfortable from the very first day. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good, which we believe reflects the consistency and thoughtfulness of the care we deliver day to day. We do not take that lightly, and we are always looking at ways to listen, improve and respond to the people in our care and their families. If you are considering Rookwood Residential Home for yourself or a loved one, we would genuinely welcome you to come and visit us. We are a residential care home in Lancing, West Sussex, supporting adults living with mental health conditions, including people whose lives have been affected by alcohol or drugs. Most of the people we support are younger adults. We also offer respite stays where somewhere steady is needed for a period rather than permanently. A place like ours works when it is calm and predictable. People who have had a hard time need somewhere the days hold their shape, where staff do not panic in a difficult week and where nobody is written off because of a setback. Alongside that, we try hard not to do things for people that they can do themselves. Cooking, laundry, managing money, keeping appointments, getting out and seeing people. Those are the things that add up to a life, and losing them to helpful staff is not a good outcome. We take time to understand what somebody's life has been like, what helps when things get difficult, what makes them worse and what the person wants to be different. We plan with them, alongside the professionals already involved, and we expect that plan to change, because recovery is rarely a straight line and we do not treat it as one. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Here at Cabot House, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Crawley, West Sussex. Our home supports adults with learning disabilities, autism and physical disabilities, and we also welcome younger adults who need a place where they can feel genuinely at home rather than simply looked after. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or their family will ever make, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our team works hard to understand each person as an individual, building support around their needs, routines and preferences rather than expecting people to fit around us. Whether someone moves in with us permanently or comes to us for a short respite stay, we want them to feel comfortable and respected from the very first day. Respite care is something we offer with real care and thought. We understand that a short break needs to feel just as settled and reassuring as a longer stay, so we take time to prepare properly and make sure each person is welcomed properly when they arrive. We are proud to have received a rating of "good" from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment our staff bring to their work every single day. It is something we are pleased about, though we never see it as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can improve and respond better to the people who live with us. If you would like to find out more about Cabot House or come and have a look around, we would be very happy to hear from you. We are a residential care home in Crawley, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite stays where a short break is what is needed rather than a permanent move. What we are running is a house where people live their own lives with the support they need. That sounds obvious and it is surprisingly easy to get wrong, because doing things for people is almost always quicker. We would rather somebody made their own breakfast slowly than had it made for them, and we treat how much a person can manage without us as one of the better measures of whether we are doing our job. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, what they need from their surroundings and what tips a manageable day into a difficult one. Change is handled carefully. Notice, explanation and a week that keeps its shape are not niceties here, they are what allow somebody to cope. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved. Families in particular usually understand a person better than any assessment does, and we would rather ask than assume. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are a family member or a professional considering a placement or a short break, please get in touch and we will talk it through openly, including saying so if we think we would not be the right place.

- Care Home
Here at Stanbridge House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Lancing, West Sussex. Our home is a place where residents feel genuinely comfortable, well looked after, and very much part of a community rather than simply being cared for at a distance. We specialise in older person care, residential care, and respite care, which means we support a wide range of people — whether someone is joining us for a short stay to recover or rest, or making Stanbridge House their long term home. We take the time to understand each person as an individual, learning what matters to them, what their daily routines look like, and how we can make life here feel personal rather than institutional. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are genuinely proud of. It reflects the consistent, thoughtful approach our team brings to their work each day. Good care is not about grand gestures; it is about the small things done reliably and with real attention — a meal prepared just right, a familiar face at the door, a conversation that makes someone feel heard. Lancing is a lovely part of West Sussex, and we are fortunate to be situated in a community that feels neighbourly and connected. We encourage family and friends to be as involved in life here as they wish, and we believe that strong relationships between residents, their loved ones, and our team make a real difference to wellbeing. If you are considering care for yourself or someone close to you, we would always encourage you to come and visit, have a look around, and have an honest conversation with us. We are happy to answer questions and help you work out whether Stanbridge House might be the right fit.

- Care Home
Here at L'Arche Bognor Regis Zacchaeus, we are a residential care home nestled in the heart of Bognor Regis, West Sussex, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism to live full and meaningful lives as part of a genuine community. What makes us a little different is the L'Arche ethos at the core of everything we do. L'Arche communities around the world are built on the belief that people with and without learning disabilities are stronger together, and that idea shapes the way we live and work here every day. We are not simply a place where people receive support; we are a home where relationships matter and where everyone has something to offer. We provide both long term residential care and respite care, so whether someone is joining us as a permanent member of our community or staying with us for a shorter period of rest and recovery, we work hard to make sure they feel genuinely at home. We take time to get to know each person, understanding what brings them joy, what they find difficult, and what they want from their life. That understanding shapes the support we offer. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are proud of, though we always see it as encouragement to keep listening, keep learning, and keep improving. We are based in Bognor Regis, a town we are very much part of. We value the connections our community members have locally, whether that is friendships, activities, or simply being known and welcomed in the neighbourhood. If you would like to find out more about life here at Zacchaeus, we would love to hear from you. You are very welcome to get in touch and have a conversation with us.

- Care Home
Furze Field Manor is a residential care home in Hassocks, West Sussex, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. A house shared by adults of different ages and very different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely tolerated. Our residents do not want the same day as one another. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own company until the afternoon. Some need a great deal of practical help, others mainly a settled base and staff who know them properly. We plan support with each individual and with whoever they want involved, and we adapt how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available for short periods of care or to give a family carer a planned break. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We say so plainly and welcome visits.

We are Crawford Care Home in Bognor Regis, a residential home supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people managing a mental health condition. Our most recent CQC overall rating is outstanding. We are glad of that, although the thing we would rather be measured on is whether the people living here are getting the lives they actually want. This is a home rather than a placement. People choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, what they eat and how they spend their days. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, whether that means cooking, managing money, using transport or holding down a course or a job, we work at it with them patiently and we do not decide in advance what is beyond anybody. Communication sits at the centre of the work. We learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure the whole staff team understands it rather than one or two people holding that knowledge. We work closely with families, social workers, community mental health teams and GPs so that support joins up properly. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Please contact us if you would like to come and meet the people who live here.

Our home on Beach Road in Littlehampton is a residential care home for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house in the town rather than a unit set apart from it, and the people who live here are involved in how their home runs. Support is worked out one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but depend on us for routine, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a hard day looks like for them. We take our time at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best. Everyday life means the ordinary things: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room as you want it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally, including down to the seafront. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team consistent so people are not constantly adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to come and see the house.

Dean House is a residential care home in Littlehampton, West Sussex, and we support older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, those living with mental ill health and those living with sight or hearing loss. Younger adults are supported here too, and respite stays are available. What we aim for is an ordinary life with help attached rather than a routine everybody has to fit into. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, whether they want company or quiet, and what they would like to eat. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing only as much as somebody actually needs, because taking over is easy and rarely helpful. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and the practical side of it is unglamorous. Keeping the daily rhythm and surroundings consistent. Giving somebody time to find their words instead of finishing their sentence. Knowing enough about a person's earlier life to understand what a worry is really about. Families hold most of that knowledge and we ask for it early. For residents living with mental ill health, what helps most is usually a settled household and a team who know them well. For those living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication makes most of the difference. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

Walcott House is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, and we support adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults working towards a more independent life. Respite stays are available as well. We are a household rather than a facility, and that shapes how decisions get made here. What happens at teatime, what is on the television, who goes where at the weekend: these are matters for the people who live here rather than for a rota drawn up in an office. Our staff are part of that household, and we keep the team consistent, because being properly known by the people who support you affects every hour of the day. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home. Wherever we can, we do things alongside people rather than for them, and we are patient about it. A task done slowly by the person themselves is a better result than the same task done quickly by us. For autistic people we pay close attention to predictability and to the sensory side of things. Changes are explained before they happen, routines hold, and we take noise, light and busyness seriously rather than treating them as fussiness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anyone considering Walcott House for somebody they support are welcome to visit and ask us anything at all.

Ferndale Residential Care Home is in Emsworth, and we provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. We are a home, not an institution, and we behave like one. People here have their own rooms and their own habits, they decide when to get up and what to do with the day, and visitors are welcome without arrangement. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals and the practical business of the household, and they try to do it in a way that leaves people in charge of their own lives. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces on shift, a day that follows a recognisable shape, time to do things at the pace somebody can manage, and staff who know that a calm unhurried approach prevents far more distress than it costs. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any bigger decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives how we are doing and we take the uncomfortable answers seriously, because those are the ones that tell us something.

Whyke Lodge is a residential care home in Chichester, West Sussex, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution and we work quite hard to keep that true. People here get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. There is company and activity for those who want it and no obligation at all for those who would rather have a quiet corner, a book and the window open. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always around when a person needs them. For those living with dementia, we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and move around. Chichester is where most of the people living here have spent their lives, and we keep those connections going with trips out, local visitors, and families welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Church Farm Care Home provides residential care in Chichester for older people and younger adults, and we also take planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution, and most of what we do is ordinary. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want to eat, keeping an eye on health, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents get up when they choose, spend their time as they wish, keep their own things around them and have visitors whenever it suits. The small things are what people notice. A familiar face on shift, tea made the way you like it, being asked rather than told, and somebody spotting that you are quieter today than yesterday. Staff who stay long enough to know those things prevent far more problems than any policy does, so we put real effort into keeping our team settled and well supported. Respite stays are genuinely useful. A planned stay gives a family carer proper rest, and it lets somebody find out what we are like without committing to anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us, including the parts we would rather not hear.

Pelham House is a residential care home in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and much of our work is with people living with dementia. We are a permanent home to older people, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Where dementia is part of the picture it shapes the whole house rather than one wing of it. We keep the day recognisable, keep familiar staff around people, let residents hold on to their own belongings and habits, and stay with somebody who is upset rather than trying to talk them out of it. Alongside that, we help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and eating and drinking well. We want to be honest with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you find it elsewhere. We know what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any part of it openly with families and professionals who ask. Here at L'Arche Bognor Regis Jericho, we are a residential care home nestled in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, and we support adults with learning disabilities and autism to live full, meaningful lives as part of a genuine community. What makes us a little different is the L'Arche way of doing things. We are not simply a place where support is provided and received. We are a community where people with and without learning disabilities live and work alongside one another, building real relationships grounded in mutual respect. That ethos shapes everything we do, from the way we share meals together to the way we plan each person's care around who they actually are, not just what they need on paper. We offer both residential care and respite care, so whether someone is moving in with us long term or staying for a shorter period to recharge, we work hard to make sure they feel genuinely welcome and at home from the very start. We take time to get to know each person properly, their routines, their preferences, their humour, the things that matter most to them. We want to be straightforward with anyone looking at our home. Our most recent Care Quality Commission rating is "requires improvement", and we take that seriously. We have listened carefully to the feedback, we have made changes, and we continue to work through our improvement plan with honesty and commitment. We believe families and prospective residents deserve to know that, and we are glad to talk openly about where we are in that process. If you would like to find out more about life here, or come and see the home for yourself, please do get in touch. We would genuinely love to hear from you.

Caspian House is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, supporting adults living with mental health conditions alongside older people who need residential care. This is somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been sent. What tends to help most here is a settled environment, a structure to the week that can be relied upon, and staff who know somebody well enough to notice when things are shifting, often before the person feels able to say so. Support can include help with medication, personal care where it is needed, managing a household, budgeting, getting to appointments and taking part in ordinary life outside these walls. Where somebody has goals of their own, we plan support that steps back as they step forward. We support younger adults alongside older residents, and we are careful not to treat people as a single group with one set of needs. Respite stays are available too, which can give a family carer a real break or provide a settled place to be during a difficult period. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Kingsley Court is a residential care home in Horsham, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults with physical disabilities. It is a home rather than a placement, and the household is arranged around the people living in it. Support is planned individually. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we help people move about safely without taking over from them. We give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. - Care Home
We at Fleetwood House are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the heart of Littlehampton, West Sussex, providing specialist support for adults living with learning disabilities and autism. Our home has been thoughtfully designed to be a place where residents feel safe, valued, and genuinely at home. Set within the friendly coastal community of Littlehampton, our home benefits from the gentle pace and natural beauty that this part of the South East offers. The BN postcode area is well known for its accessible seafront, green spaces, and close knit local community, all of which help create a calm and supportive backdrop for daily life. Inside, we have worked hard to create comfortable communal areas and private spaces where residents can relax, socialise, or enjoy quiet moments at their own pace. Our specialism in supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism sits at the heart of everything we do. We understand that each person who joins us is an individual with their own story, preferences, and aspirations, and we tailor our support accordingly. For younger adults in particular, we focus on building independence, confidence, and meaningful daily routines, whether that involves developing life skills, pursuing personal interests, or simply enjoying time with others in a setting that feels familiar and reassuring. Alongside our longer term residential care, we also provide respite care, offering families a trusted place to turn when they need short term support. Whether a loved one is staying with us for a planned break or to give family carers time to rest and recharge, we aim to make every stay feel comforting, structured, and engaging. We know how difficult it can be to step away from a caring role, and we work closely with families to ensure that respite stays are smooth and positive from beginning to end. In terms of regulatory oversight, our most recent CQC inspection in April 2022 resulted in an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We were pleased that inspectors rated us as Good in the Caring and Responsive domains, recognising the kindness of our team and the way we respond to the individual needs of those we support. We fully acknowledge the areas highlighted for improvement across the Safe, Effective, and Well led domains, and we are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and positive change. For us, the inspection process is an important part of how we continue to grow and strengthen the quality of care we provide, and we welcome open conversations with families about the steps we are taking. Choosing a care home for someone you love is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we never take that responsibility lightly. If you are considering residential care, respite support, or specialist provision for a younger adult with a learning disability or autism in the Littlehampton area, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about our approach, and help you decide whether Fleetwood House could be the right home for your loved one.

Deerswood Lodge is a residential care home in Crawley, West Sussex, providing care for older people, including residents living with dementia, along with support for younger adults and respite stays. We want the day to belong to the people living here. Residents choose when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and how to spend the afternoon, and our staff support them with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and meals. We keep a careful eye on the quieter signals such as appetite, sleep, mood and steadiness on the feet, because those usually tell us first that a doctor or district nurse should be involved. Dementia care is a significant part of what we do, and we approach it by getting to know the person rather than the diagnosis. Knowing what someone did for a living, what music they like or what time they always went to bed is far more useful than any list of tasks. We keep routines steady, keep familiar faces around wherever we can, and look for the reason behind distress instead of simply settling it. Respite is available for planned family breaks and for people recovering after illness or a hospital stay, and short stay residents get the same attention as everyone else. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Visitors are welcome at Deerswood Lodge.

Here at Chalcraft Hall Care Home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, we provide a warm and genuinely homely environment where older adults can feel safe, comfortable and well looked after. We have been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, and that recognition reflects the everyday commitment our team brings to the people who live with us. We offer residential care, dementia care and respite care, which means we are able to support a range of needs and circumstances. Whether someone is joining us for a short stay to recover or rest, or making Chalcraft Hall their long term home, we work hard to make sure the transition feels as smooth and reassuring as possible. No two residents are the same, and we take the time to get to know each person properly, including their routines, preferences, likes and dislikes. Dementia care is an area we take particularly seriously. We understand how much it matters to families that their loved one is cared for by people who approach the condition with patience, understanding and a genuine desire to maintain dignity and wellbeing at every stage. Our team works closely with residents and their families to make sure care plans reflect what actually matters to each individual. We welcome family involvement and believe that open, honest communication is one of the most important things we can offer to the people who trust us. Bognor Regis is a lovely part of West Sussex, and we make the most of our surroundings where we can, encouraging residents to enjoy the outdoors and take part in activities that bring a sense of purpose and enjoyment to daily life. If you would like to find out more about life at Chalcraft Hall, we would be very happy to show you around and answer any questions you might have.

Here at Lulwatch, we are a residential care home based in Worthing, West Sussex, and we are proud to support a wide range of people across our community. We welcome older adults, younger adults, and people living with learning disabilities or autism, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. Our team works hard every day to make sure each person in our care feels genuinely at home, respected, and listened to. We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our approach is straightforward: we get to know each person as an individual, understand what matters to them, and build their care around their life rather than the other way around. Whether someone needs support with day to day living or more specialist assistance, we aim to provide it in a way that preserves dignity and encourages independence wherever possible. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good, which reflects the consistent effort our team puts in. That said, we never stand still. We are always looking at how we can improve and how we can better meet the needs of the people we support. Worthing is a wonderful town and being rooted in the local community matters to us. We encourage families and friends to stay closely involved in the lives of their loved ones, and we work to maintain those connections as an important part of wellbeing. If you are considering Lulworth for yourself or for someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to get in touch or come and visit us. We are happy to answer any questions and to help you decide whether we are the right fit.

- Care Home
Here at Lambourne House, we provide residential care for people who need a little extra support to live well. Based in Chichester, West Sussex, we work with younger adults who have learning disabilities, autism, or physical disabilities, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual routines or to give family carers some time to rest. We know that moving into a care home, or even just staying with us for a short while, is a significant step. We try to make that transition as straightforward as possible by getting to know each person properly before we start making assumptions about what they need. Everyone who comes through our door has their own personality, preferences and way of doing things, and we work hard to make sure our support reflects that rather than fitting people into a ready made routine. Our team puts a great deal of thought into how we can help each individual maintain as much independence as possible while still feeling genuinely looked after. Whether someone is with us long term or just for a short stay, we want them to feel comfortable, safe and part of the community here. We were pleased to receive a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission at our most recent inspection, which reflects the effort our staff put in every day. We do not take that for granted and we continue to look at how we can improve and respond to the people in our care and their families. If you are looking for residential care in the Chichester area, either on an ongoing basis or as a short term arrangement, we would genuinely welcome a conversation. Feel free to get in touch and come and see us for yourself.

Greensleeves Care Home is a residential care home in Crawley, West Sussex. We look after older people who need help through the day, including many living with dementia, people who have managed a mental health condition for years, and people who are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and also a little wary of it, because a rating describes a few days of scrutiny and what matters is the other three hundred and sixty. So we treat it as a standard to hold rather than a thing to advertise. What we think we get right is mostly unglamorous. The same staff, year after year, who know which chair a person prefers and which hymn they know all the words to. Meals that are hot and actually wanted. Nobody hurried through a wash. Where sight or hearing has gone, attention to light, contrast, noise and the way we approach somebody, because a home that is hard to read shrinks a person's confidence. We want relatives in the building often rather than confined to visiting hours, and we would rather be told promptly when we have got something wrong. Come and see us on an ordinary day, unannounced if you prefer.

At Greenways, we provide residential and dementia care for older people, younger adults, and those who need a shorter stay through respite care, all within our home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure every person who lives with us feels safe, comfortable, and genuinely at home. That means getting to know each resident as an individual, understanding what matters to them, and making sure their daily life reflects their own preferences and routines rather than ours. For those living with dementia, we work hard to create an environment that feels familiar and calm, where people can move through their days with as much confidence and independence as possible. We are equally attentive to the needs of younger adults in our care, recognising that their experiences and expectations may differ from those of older residents, and adapting accordingly. Our respite stays are there for people who need short term support, whether that is following a stay in hospital, to give a family carer some time to rest, or simply to try living with us before making a longer term decision. We welcome those conversations and are happy to talk through what would work best. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of good, and we see that as encouragement to keep doing what we do well while always looking for ways to improve. If you would like to find out more about life at Greenways or arrange a visit, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

We are a residential care home in Littlehampton, providing a home for older people who need some help to get comfortably through the day. We try hard to keep the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people bringing their own belongings and keeping to their own rhythms where they can. We help with personal care, mobility, meals and medication, and we care for people living with dementia. With dementia the things that help are rarely complicated: familiar staff, routines that do not keep changing, and enough time that nothing has to be hurried. A day that is not rushed is usually a day that goes well. Respite stays are available too, whether to give a family carer a proper rest after a long stretch of managing at home, or to let someone try the home for a short period before deciding about anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Keeping it depends on hearing about small problems while they are still small, so we ask residents and relatives often and we do something about what they tell us. Do come and see us if you are looking at homes in this part of West Sussex. A look round, a chat with the people who live here and a cup of tea will tell you more than anything on a page.

Deepdene Court is a home in Littlehampton, West Sussex, providing both residential and nursing care, with a particular focus on supporting adults with mental health needs. Nursing care is available here, which means that health needs are managed on site and people are not moved on unnecessarily when their needs change. Mental health support in a care home works best when the place itself is calm, predictable and free of fuss. We keep our staff team as consistent as we can, we get to know people well enough to notice when something has shifted, and we work closely with local mental health services, doctors and, where they are involved, community teams. Medication is managed carefully and reviewed properly. We also believe people should not be defined by a diagnosis. Residents choose how they spend the day, what they eat, whether they want company and who visits. We will encourage somebody who has become withdrawn, and we will equally respect a person who wants their own space. For residents needing help with personal care or with moving safely, our staff are trained and the right equipment is in place. We offer respite stays for people who need support for a short period and for families who need a break from caring. If you are looking at options in this part of West Sussex, please contact us and come and see how the home runs.

We at Lingfield are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in East Grinstead, West Sussex, where every individual is supported to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Our home provides specialised residential care for adults with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health needs, alongside respite care for those who need shorter stays. Nestled within the peaceful surroundings of East Grinstead, our home benefits from the calm, community focused atmosphere that the RH postcode area is known for. The setting offers a tranquil backdrop for daily life, whilst remaining conveniently close to local amenities and the wider South East region. We have created an environment that feels genuinely like home, where residents can relax, socialise, and enjoy familiar comforts within surroundings designed to feel safe, welcoming, and personal. Our team is dedicated to supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism, as well as those managing mental health conditions. We understand that each person who joins us brings their own history, preferences, and aspirations, and we take great care to build support around the individual rather than expecting the individual to fit around us. For residents, this means being encouraged to develop independence at their own pace, participate in activities they genuinely enjoy, and build meaningful relationships within a supportive community. For families, it means the reassurance of knowing that a loved one is being treated with dignity, patience, and genuine understanding by a team experienced in complex needs. Our respite provision is also a valued part of what we offer, providing families and regular carers with peace of mind during periods when a short stay is needed. Whether respite is planned in advance or required at shorter notice, we aim to make the transition smooth and reassuring, ensuring that guests feel comfortable, cared for, and part of the community from the moment they arrive. The Care Quality Commission has rated Lingfield as Good overall following their most recent inspection in March 2023. We were pleased to be recognised as Good across the Safe, Effective, Caring, and Well led domains, reflecting the commitment of our team to providing kind, competent, and thoughtfully managed care. The Responsive domain was rated as Requires Improvement, and we have taken this feedback seriously, using it as a valuable opportunity to strengthen how we tailor and adapt our support to changing individual needs. Continuous improvement is central to how we work, and we remain committed to listening, learning, and evolving so that every resident receives care that truly reflects who they are. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions involved. We at Lingfield would be delighted to welcome you for a visit, answer your questions, and show you first hand how we support the people who live here. Please do get in touch to arrange a conversation or a tour, and let us help you take the next step with confidence and reassurance.

Here at Oakland Court, we are proud to call Bognor Regis home. Nestled in the heart of West Sussex, our care home offers a warm and welcoming environment where older adults can feel genuinely comfortable, safe and valued. We provide residential care, dementia care and respite care for older people, meaning we are well placed to support a wide range of needs under one roof. Whether someone is joining us for a short stay to recover or rest, or making Oakland Court their permanent home, we put the same thought and attention into every individual's experience. We take the time to understand who each person is, what matters to them and how they like their days to look. Dementia care is an area we take particularly seriously. We know that a diagnosis affects not just the individual but the whole family, and we work hard to create an environment that feels calm, familiar and reassuring. Routines, relationships and a sense of belonging all play a real part in supporting wellbeing, and our approach reflects that. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are genuinely pleased about. It reflects the consistent effort our team puts in day to day, not just during inspections, but in the quiet moments that make real differences to people's lives. We are also conscious that choosing a care home for yourself or a loved one is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. We encourage anyone considering Oakland Court to come and visit us, have a look around, ask questions and get a feel for who we are. We believe the best way to understand what we offer is simply to spend a little time with us. We look forward to welcoming you.

Meadowcroft Care Home is in Shoreham by Sea. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room, their own television and a quiet word with somebody who is not in a hurry. Both are perfectly reasonable and neither needs explaining. People usually arrive having struggled at home for a while, and the first few weeks are about settling rather than fitting in. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures so a room becomes theirs quickly. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Being near the coast, a change of scene is easy to arrange and trips out are part of the normal week. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Meadowcroft.

Oak House is a residential care home in Crawley, West Sussex. We support older people, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. We plan around each person rather than running the house to one pattern, because the people who live here want quite different things from their days. Some want a settled routine and the company of the lounge. Others are out at college, at work or with family for much of the week. Both are properly supported. Everyone decides their own basics. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to join in or keep to themselves, and how their room is furnished. Personal care is given discreetly and at the person's own pace, and we are careful not to take over tasks that somebody would rather do for themselves. Our team stays as consistent as we can make it, which is what allows us to know people properly, notice early when something is wrong and understand what sits behind distress instead of simply containing it. Health needs are looked after with local GPs and community teams, and families hear from us as a matter of routine. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. You are welcome to visit, meet the people who live here and see how the house works.

Abi House is a residential care home in Worthing for adults with a learning disability and for autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who usually live at home with family. We are a house rather than a unit, and we try to run it that way. People are involved in the shopping and the cooking, they have their own routines and their own space, and they are supported to get out into Worthing, to use local facilities, to keep up with friends and family and to do the things they enjoy. Where someone wants to take on more independence, our job is to make that possible rather than to hold them back. Support has to fit the person. Some of the people we support need things to be quiet, predictable and clearly explained in advance. Others thrive on activity. We take the time to learn what works, we record it plainly, and we expect every member of staff to follow it so that support does not change with the shift. We work alongside community learning disability teams, families and advocates across West Sussex, and we involve people in decisions about their own lives at every stage. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking for a placement or would like to discuss respite, please get in touch and come and see the house.

Oakwood Court is a residential care home in Haywards Heath providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit one routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out and about, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us, including the parts we would rather not hear.

Nyton House is a residential care home in Chichester. We care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia, those with a physical disability and those whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. Our care is the practical, daily kind: help to wash and dress, medication given properly, meals cooked here, support to move about safely and staff available through the night. Around that, residents arrange their own time as they wish, and we try not to organise people's lives on their behalf. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings exactly where they are expected, approach people so as not to startle them and check that we have been understood. Where people need help to move, we take the time that doing it safely and comfortably requires. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. Families across West Sussex are welcome to visit.

- Care Home
Cherrymead is a residential care home in Littlehampton supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. People choose how their rooms look, what they eat, when they get up and how much of the day they spend in company. Those choices are most of what makes a place worth living in, and they take steady effort to protect when staff change and pressures build. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than only around risk. Cooking, shopping, managing money, using the bus, getting to college, work or activities, and keeping up with family and friends. Where somebody needs a great deal of help, we still look hard for the parts they can take on themselves, because independence disappears quietly unless somebody is watching for it. Communication and environment get real attention. We learn how each person tells us what they want, including those who use little or no speech, and we adapt to them rather than the reverse. Noise, lighting, predictability and having somewhere quiet to retreat to all shape how good a day somebody has. Being near the coast, getting out is easy and part of the ordinary week. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Arranging and funding a care home place in West Sussex
Funding rarely feels pressing until a hospital discharge date appears, and by then the useful conversations are the ones that should already have happened. Any adult who appears to need care and support has the right to ask for an assessment, whatever their savings look like, and that assessment is the gateway to almost everything else.
Starting with a care needs assessment
The assessment looks at daily living: washing, dressing, medication, mobility, eating, and how safe someone is on their own overnight. It produces a written record of what support is needed and whether a residential setting is the right answer, which is worth having even for families who expect to pay privately. West Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying out that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. A carer living in the household can request a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time.
What a placement is likely to cost
Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows the care assessment and looks at income, savings and other capital. Someone whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the full fee themselves, while those below it receive help on a sliding scale. Fees differ from home to home across West Sussex, and they usually reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much one to one support a resident needs. Ask any home to set out in writing what the weekly fee covers and what is charged separately, because extras such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings are often billed on top.
Choosing between care homes in West Sussex
224 providers is a large field, and narrowing it is mostly a matter of applying filters that actually matter to the person moving in rather than trying to read every profile.
Using the inspection ratings well
Every rating on this page comes from the Care Quality Commission. Homes rated Outstanding, such as Crawford Care Home, have been judged to go beyond what inspectors expect as standard, while a Good rating means the home met every standard tested. A Requires Improvement judgement is not automatically a reason to strike a home off, but it does mean reading the report to see what was found, whether the concerns touched on safety or on record keeping, and how recently the visit took place. Homes shown as not yet rated are usually newer registrations that have not had a first full inspection, so there is less published evidence to work from and the questions you ask on a visit carry more weight.
What to look for when you visit
Visit at a time that has not been chosen for you, ideally around a mealtime, and pay attention to how staff speak to residents rather than to how the entrance hall looks. Ask how many carers are on shift overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and what the turnover of staff has been over the past year, since stable teams tend to produce steadier care. If dementia is part of the picture, ask what specific training the staff have completed and how the home supports someone who becomes distressed. Distance matters more than families expect: a home that relatives can reach easily gets visited often, and regular visitors are one of the better safeguards a resident can have.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in West Sussex
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in West Sussex?
Contact West Sussex County Council and ask adult social care for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can request it on behalf of a relative with their agreement. The assessment covers daily tasks, mobility, medication and night time safety, and results in a written record of what support is needed. If a hospital stay is involved, the ward team can refer directly to speed things up.
Can West Sussex County Council pay for a residential placement?
It can, provided the person meets both the care eligibility criteria and the financial test. West Sussex County Council carries out a financial assessment after the needs assessment, looking at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes. Those with capital above the national threshold usually fund the placement themselves, though they can still ask the council for an assessment and for advice. Where the council does contribute, it will agree a personal budget covering the assessed needs.
Which providers are included in this West Sussex listing?
This page brings together two hundred and seventeen residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in West Sussex. They are homes providing personal care and daily support rather than nursing delivered on site by registered nurses. The list spans large purpose built homes and small houses supporting a handful of people, including providers such as Walberton Place Care Home, Ashton Manor and Elizabeth House. Each profile carries the current rating and links through to the published inspection report.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home supports people with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, medication prompts and meals, with staff on hand day and night. A nursing home is registered to provide the same support plus clinical care from registered nurses on the premises, which suits people with wounds, complex medication regimes or conditions needing regular clinical oversight. Every home on this page is registered for residential care. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is worth checking whether a home can meet that need or whether a further move would follow.
How early should families begin looking at homes in West Sussex?
Earlier than most people do. Starting while the current arrangement is still holding gives you time to visit properly, compare inspection reports and put a name down where a home has a waiting list. Crisis moves, particularly those arranged around a discharge date, tend to narrow the choice to whatever has a bed free that week. Even a rough shortlist drawn up in advance makes a sudden decision far less fraught.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in West Sussex?
Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, how long the registered manager has been in post, and what staff turnover has looked like recently. Ask to see a sample weekly activity plan and a menu, and check what happens when someone declines a meal or wants to eat at a different time. Request a written breakdown of the weekly fee and a clear list of what falls outside it, along with the notice period and the policy on fee increases. Finally, ask how the home keeps families informed when something changes, and how it handles a concern or complaint.
