Care Homes in West Sussex 224 care homes · 178 rated Good by CQC

Care homes in West Sussex do not all sit at the same level of inspected quality, and the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement across this list, with a further group of homes not yet rated. Two hundred and seventeen residential care homes match the search, each one registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on the premises. Where money forms part of the question, West Sussex County Council is the body that carries out a care needs assessment and decides whether someone qualifies for funded support, so approaching the council early tends to save time later on. A rating on its own is only a summary, though, and it will not tell you how a home feels on an ordinary weekday. Open the profiles that look promising, read the full inspection report sitting behind each judgement, and let the detail in those reports shape the questions you put to a manager before anyone commits to a move.

    • Care Home

17 Shakespeare Road is a small residential home in Worthing, West Sussex, and it is home to adults with learning disabilities and to autistic adults. We also offer respite stays, planned in advance so that a short stay is a visit somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. We are a house on an ordinary street and we run it as the residents' home. People choose how their bedrooms look, have a genuine say in the shopping and the meals, and get involved in cooking, laundry and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and managing money, and it covers helping people get out to whatever matters to them, whether that is a job, a course, a club, the seafront or a regular visit to family. Communication is where we put most of our effort. Some people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or a device, and others tell us a great deal through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write down what we learn so it survives a change of staff, and we listen to families and to health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit.

    • Care Home

Vine House is a residential care home for older people in Midhurst, caring for residents from across West Sussex and the surrounding countryside. We provide permanent places and planned respite stays, and we support people living with dementia, those with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairments. We aim for a household that feels domestic and unhurried. There is time here to help someone get ready without rushing them, time for a proper conversation and time to sit with a resident having a difficult afternoon. Meals are a genuine part of the day with an alternative always available, and residents keep their own routines as far as they can. Where a resident has a sensory impairment, we adapt how we communicate and how spaces are arranged rather than expecting them to adjust to us. Lighting, contrast, noise and clear layout make a considerable difference and they are worth taking seriously. Dementia care starts with knowing the person. Their history, their working life, their family and what has always settled them guide how we support them, and when someone is unsettled we look for the specific cause behind it. For residents with physical disabilities we plan and equip so that reduced mobility does not shrink someone's world. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. You are very welcome to visit on an ordinary day and see how things really run.

    • Care Home

Fernbank is a residential care home in Worthing supporting older people, and we welcome respite guests. We are a small home on the Sussex coast and we run at the pace of the people living here. Mornings are flexible, meals are proper meals cooked in the house, and residents decide how they spend their days. Some want company and something going on from breakfast onwards, and some want the paper, the window and their own thoughts. Neither should have to be negotiated for. Staff here know residents properly. They know who takes sugar, who will always talk about the sea, who wants a hand and who would much rather manage alone. That knowledge is what good care actually rests on, and it is why we keep our teams as settled as we can. We are conscious that moving into a home usually follows a loss, often a house lived in for decades, and frequently happens quickly after something has gone wrong. We take the first weeks seriously, arrange rooms with people's own furniture and pictures where possible, and do not expect anyone to have settled in by the second day. Respite guests receive exactly what permanent residents receive. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you would like to look round, please get in touch and come and see us.

    • Care Home

Bancroft House in Worthing is a residential home supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with mental health needs, most of them younger adults. We also offer respite stays. People live here for years rather than months, so we run the house as their household and think of ourselves as part of it. The people who live here decide how their rooms look, have a genuine say in what goes on the shopping list and what gets cooked, and shape the week around what they want to do. We would rather help somebody do a thing for themselves slowly than do it for them quickly. Support with personal care, medication, health appointments, money and getting about is given exactly as each person has agreed, and recorded in enough detail that a colleague new to a shift can get a morning right without being told. For anybody who finds change difficult, that consistency is the ground everything else stands on. Communication is where the real work lies. Not everybody here uses speech, and understanding how a person shows a preference, a worry or a refusal is what makes choice genuine. We learn each person's way and write it down. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we try to be steady and clear rather than reassuring. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

    • Care Home

We at Victoria Grand are proud to offer dedicated residential care in the heart of Worthing, West Sussex, providing a warm and welcoming home for older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia. Nestled within the BN postcode area on the South East coast, our home benefits from the gentle pace and friendly community spirit that Worthing is so well known for. The seaside town setting offers a calming backdrop for daily life, with familiar surroundings that help residents feel settled, comfortable, and truly at home. Our environment has been thoughtfully arranged to support both independence and companionship, with communal spaces where friendships can flourish and quieter areas where residents can enjoy a moment of peace, a favourite book, or a visit from loved ones. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of people we are privileged to support. For older people, we focus on preserving dignity, encouraging meaningful routines, and ensuring every individual feels valued for who they are. Our residential care is built around personalised support with daily living, gentle encouragement to stay active, and the reassurance of compassionate staff available around the clock. For residents living with dementia, we aim to create a calm and predictable environment, where familiar faces, consistent routines, and patient, understanding care help to reduce anxiety and nurture moments of connection. We also welcome younger adults whose care needs benefit from a residential setting, recognising that age is just one part of any person's story and that every resident deserves a tailored approach that honours their individuality, preferences, and aspirations. In practice, this means families can expect open communication, a willingness to listen, and a genuine commitment to working in partnership with relatives. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we take that responsibility seriously. Whether it is celebrating a birthday, marking a quiet anniversary, or simply enjoying a cup of tea together, we strive to make every day meaningful. Our most recent CQC inspection, carried out on 19 May 2025, resulted in an overall rating of Requires Improvement, with the same rating across the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led domains. We want to be open and honest about this with the families considering our home. A Requires Improvement rating highlights areas where the regulator has asked us to strengthen our practice, and we view this feedback as an important opportunity to listen, learn, and grow. We are committed to acting on the findings, working closely with our team, residents, and relatives to make the improvements that matter most, and ensuring that the quality of care we provide continues to develop in the right direction. If you are exploring care options in Worthing for a loved one, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about our approach, and welcome you for a visit so you can experience the atmosphere of Victoria Grand for yourself. Choosing the right home is a journey, and we are here to walk alongside you with honesty, kindness, and care.

    • Care Home

St Wilfrid's Priory Care Home is a residential care home in Arundel, West Sussex. We support older people who need help with daily life and younger adults who need residential care, and we offer respite stays, whether for recovery after illness or to give a family carer a proper break. Moving into a home usually follows a difficult period, so we take the settling in slowly. We ask about the routines somebody has kept for years, the food they actually like, how they take their tea and whether they would rather be up early or have a lie in, and we fit around that instead of expecting people to adapt to us. Rooms belong to the people in them, furnished with their own things, and we knock before entering. The days here are unhurried. Some residents want company, conversation and a walk out in the town. Others want the newspaper, the radio and their own company. Both are perfectly reasonable. Our team stays settled, which means residents are cared for by people who know them and that changes in health or spirits are noticed early. We work with local GPs and community nurses so that problems are dealt with before they become urgent, and families are welcome at any reasonable hour. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Please come and see us in Arundel.

    • Care Home

St Winefrides is a residential care home in Littlehampton. We support older people who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia and people living with a mental health condition. We also take respite bookings for families needing a short break or a period of extra support after illness. We aim to feel like a house rather than an institution. People rise when they wake, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, choose how the day is spent and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Mealtimes are meant to be enjoyed rather than got through, and visitors are welcome throughout the day without arranging it first. Supporting somebody living with dementia takes patience and a good memory for detail, so our staff learn the particulars that help: the favoured chair, the harder hours of the day, what settles a person when they are unsettled. Very little of that is written down, but it is what makes a home work. Being near the coast is part of the appeal for a good many of our residents, and we make use of it. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are considering residential or respite care in West Sussex, please arrange to come and look round.

    • Care Home

Autumn Lodge in Bognor Regis is a residential care home caring for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. We support people living with dementia, and that work rests on continuity above all else. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what lies behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a hard one. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period after illness and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take that as the standard to hold rather than something to point at. The more telling measure is the everyday evidence, whether people are up and occupied, whether mealtimes are sociable and whether relatives feel able to say when something is not right.

Avon House is a residential care home in Worthing for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Being close to the sea means getting out for some air is easy. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a break or to help somebody regain strength after illness. You are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

Our home supports older adults, younger adults, and individuals living with a learning disability or autism, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can face, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our aim is to create an environment where each person feels genuinely at home, where routines are respected and individuality is celebrated. Whether someone is with us for a few weeks or has made Brookmead their permanent home, we want their experience to feel personal and considered rather than institutional. We are honest about where we are as a home. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we have taken that feedback seriously. We are actively working through the improvements identified, and our team is committed to making the changes needed to deliver the standard of care our residents deserve. We think it is important that families know this upfront rather than discovering it elsewhere, and we welcome anyone to come and see for themselves the work that is underway. The people who live here come from varied backgrounds and have different needs, and we try to reflect that in how we run the home day to day. Care plans are built around the individual, and we work closely with families and health professionals to make sure support is joined up and responsive. If you would like to find out more about Brookmead or arrange a visit, we would be very glad to hear from you. We are always happy to show people around and answer any questions you might have.

Rotherlea is a residential care home in Petworth, West Sussex. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home alone, including a good number living with dementia, and some younger adults. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Petworth is a small South Downs town and we belong to it rather than sit apart from it. People who live here walk to the shops, see faces they recognise, and have relatives close enough to drop in without making a journey of it. Staff are mostly local and tend to stay a long while, which does more for the people living here than any amount of decoration. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about where that line falls. What we do is the daily work of helping somebody wash and dress, take their medicines, eat properly, move about safely and stay connected to other people. Done well that is a skilled job and it depends almost entirely on whether staff know the person. For residents with dementia we keep life predictable, learn individual histories properly, and accept that some days are harder than others without treating that as a failure. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visit without an appointment if you would rather. We would honestly prefer it.

We are proud to be a care home where residents feel genuinely at home, supported by a team that takes the time to get to know each person as an individual. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person and their family will ever make. That is why we try to make the process as open and straightforward as possible, welcoming visits, answering questions honestly, and making sure everyone feels comfortable and informed before any decisions are made. Our approach to care is built around the people who live here. We take time to understand each resident's history, preferences and routines, because good care looks different for every person. Whether someone needs support with day to day living, help managing a physical disability, or assistance because of a sensory impairment, we work hard to make sure their needs are met in a respectful and thoughtful way. Strawberry Fields is a residential care home in Littlehampton supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works from day to day. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally, including down to the sea. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Shaftesbury Ashley Place is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We support older people who need help with daily living, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities, including those living with sight or hearing loss. The range of people we support is wide, and it means we plan around the individual rather than the category. We start with how somebody communicates, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want to be able to do, and we write the plan from there. We are careful that helping does not slide into doing things for people that they would rather do themselves. The building and the routine matter as much as the support itself. Accessible spaces, clear layouts, quiet areas and a predictable shape to the day remove a great deal of unnecessary difficulty. For residents living with dementia, familiar surroundings and unhurried staff do more good than anything else we could offer. Life here should look like life anywhere else. People go out, see family and friends and keep up their own interests. Respite stays are available so that families can take a planned break. • Care Home

Magellan House is a residential home in East Grinstead for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The people who live here are mostly younger adults building the life they want, and the home exists to support that rather than to manage it. We start from the assumption that everyone here has preferences, opinions and ambitions, and that our job is to find out what they are, including where someone does not use speech to tell us. Communication is something we work at seriously, using whatever approach suits the individual, and we do not make decisions about a person without involving them. Daily life is built around the people who live here. That covers the practical business of cooking, shopping, keeping a room the way you like it and managing money, and it covers the things that make a week worth having, whether that is work, college, sport, music or simply a regular trip to a favourite place. For autistic people in particular we pay close attention to routine, sensory environment and advance notice of any change. We offer respite stays as well, which can give families a planned break and give the person a positive experience away from home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at options in West Sussex, please come and see us.

Stanhope Lodge is a residential care home in Durrington, West Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, people living with dementia, autistic adults and people with a learning disability, adults with physical disabilities, people with sight or hearing loss and those managing an eating disorder. We also offer respite stays. Supporting that spread of needs under one roof is only possible if care is planned for the individual rather than the group. We spend real time getting to know somebody, write plans that describe the person rather than the category, and review them properly as things change. What steadies one person here would unsettle another, and we would rather do the work of finding out than apply a single house approach to everyone. People choose how their rooms look, take part in the ordinary business of the house as much as they want to, and get out to what they enjoy locally. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, that belongs in the plan rather than at its edges. We keep the staff team as consistent as we can, train them to notice early signs of distress, and work closely with families, social workers, GPs and community teams. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors and referrers are welcome to come and see the home.

St Clare Rest Home is a residential care home in Brighton, offering a comfortable and settled home to older people who need support with daily living. We also provide respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to help someone regain confidence after illness. We think a care home should feel like somewhere people live rather than somewhere people are kept. Residents decide when they get up, where they spend their day, what they eat and how sociable they want to be. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a rota says so. There is company to be found if it is wanted and peace to be had if it is not. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered, because food is one of the real pleasures of the day and not simply a task to be got through. We are well placed for the town and the sea front, and we support residents to get out and about as much as they wish. Our staff know residents well, which is what allows them to notice when something is not quite right. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses, and we keep families properly informed. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

    • Care Home

We at Victoria Lodge offer warm, personalised residential care in the heart of Worthing, West Sussex, welcoming older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia into a home where comfort, dignity, and genuine kindness sit at the centre of everything we do. Nestled within the coastal community of Worthing, our residential care home benefits from the gentle pace and friendly character of this well loved seaside town. The BN postcode area places us within easy reach of local amenities, parks, and the seafront, making visits from family and friends straightforward and enjoyable. Inside, we have created a calm, homely environment where residents can relax in communal spaces, enjoy quiet moments in their own rooms, and feel truly at ease in familiar, welcoming surroundings. Our specialisms include older person care, residential care, dementia care, support for younger adults, and respite care. In practice, this means we tailor the support we provide to each individual, recognising that no two people arrive with the same story, preferences, or needs. For those living with dementia, we focus on creating routines and gentle prompts that bring reassurance, whilst encouraging meaningful moments of connection through conversation, music, and familiar activities. For younger adults in our care, we champion independence and personal choice, supporting people to live life on their own terms with the right level of assistance. Our respite care offering provides families and regular carers with peace of mind, knowing their loved one is looked after with the same warmth and attentiveness as our permanent residents, whether the stay is for a few days or several weeks. Families choosing Victoria Lodge often tell us how much reassurance they draw from our approach to everyday living. We take time to learn about each resident's history, hobbies, and preferences, so that daily life feels familiar and personal rather than clinical. Mealtimes, activities, and quiet moments are all shaped around the people who live here, and we work closely with relatives to keep communication open, honest, and supportive. Following our most recent CQC inspection in June 2022, Victoria Lodge was awarded an overall rating of Good, with Good ratings across all five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this consistent recognition offers meaningful reassurance. It reflects a home where safety is taken seriously, where care is delivered effectively and compassionately, where residents' voices genuinely shape the support they receive, and where leadership sets a steady, thoughtful tone throughout the team. We understand that searching for the right care home can feel overwhelming, and that every family wants to feel confident they have made the right choice. If you are considering care for a loved one in Worthing or the wider West Sussex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Victoria Lodge. We would be delighted to answer your questions, listen to your family's needs, and help you take the next step with confidence and peace of mind.

Auburn Lodge Residential Home is a residential care home in Chichester, West Sussex. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period, whether that is while a family carer takes a break or because someone wants to try life here before making a longer decision. We keep what we do deliberately focused. Residential care for older people is our work, and we would rather do that attentively than spread ourselves across every kind of need. Residents tell us when they like to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they prefer to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a timetable that suits the rota. Independence is protected wherever it exists. If someone can manage part of a task themselves, we leave them to it and stay nearby rather than taking over for the sake of speed. Company matters as much as practical help, and we pay attention to residents who would otherwise spend the day alone in their room. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit and we would far rather hear a concern early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we hold ourselves to it in the ordinary details of life here.

We are Littlefair, a residential care home in East Grinstead, West Sussex. We provide a home for older people, including those with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also offer respite stays. Residential care means supporting people with the parts of daily life that have become hard work and leaving the rest where it belongs. For health needs beyond our registration we work alongside district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover something we should not. For residents with a physical disability the important things are practical. Enough time that nothing feels rushed. Equipment set up properly. Being asked how a transfer is best done rather than handled according to whatever the last carer did. Where somebody has a sensory impairment, we make sure the environment works for them and we check that assumption rather than trusting it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than leave a family to find it elsewhere. We know what the inspection identified, work is in hand on it, and we are willing to go through the detail with anyone considering a place here.

Bramshaw House provides residential care in Worthing for older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. We run this as somebody's home rather than as a service people receive. Residents have their own rooms and their own routines, they decide how their days go, and our staff fit around that with help for personal care, medicines, meals and the practical running of the place. Where somebody can do something themselves, we leave them to it, and where they need a hand, we give one without making a performance of it. The detail matters more than any general policy. How a person communicates, what makes a day feel manageable, how much notice they need before anything changes, and how they prefer to be helped are things we learn from them. For residents with sight or hearing loss, we take trouble over how we approach and speak with them, which costs nothing and changes how every interaction feels. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break and let people see what we are like before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives what they think, and we act on the answers we would rather not have heard.

Tripletrees is a residential care home in Burgess Hill in West Sussex. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we welcome respite guests as well as people moving in for the longer term. We try to keep the feel of a household rather than an institution. Rooms are personal and people bring their own furniture and pictures if they want to. There is no rule about when to get up or when to go to bed, nobody is made to join in with anything, and visitors are welcome without booking an appointment. Our staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, and they do it in a way that leaves people their dignity. For those living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and we ask families to tell us about a person's history in some detail. Knowing that somebody taught for thirty years, or gardened every weekend, or always had the radio on at breakfast, gives us far more to work with than any list of needs. Respite stays matter to us as well. Looking after a relative at home is demanding, and a planned break is often what makes carrying on possible. Short stay guests get the same attention as anyone living here permanently. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round, meet the team and talk to relatives of people who already live here.

We also support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and older people, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays. Where physical disability is the reason somebody is here, the practical detail is the whole job. Equipment, wheelchairs, seating, positioning, hoists, transfers and access are what decide whether a person can get where they want to go and do things for themselves, so we get them right and review them as circumstances change. Where somebody wants to do a task themselves, more slowly, we let them. We should be honest about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you come across it elsewhere. We know what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any part of it openly with families, professionals and the people who live here. We are Glebe House, a residential care home in Southbourne, West Sussex. We look after older people who are finding it hard to manage at home, and we also support younger adults whose needs suit a residential setting. Respite stays are available for shorter periods. We keep things deliberately homely. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you like to wake, where you want your meals, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those decisions stay with you. A good deal of what makes life here pleasant is quite ordinary, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. We also think a home should stay part of the place it sits in. We support people to keep up the connections they already have, whether that is family nearby, a church, a club or simply the shops, because moving in should not mean closing the door on all of that. And we are careful about independence. If somebody can do a thing themselves, more slowly than we could do it for them, then it is their time and their choice. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

The Corner House is a care home in Worthing. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing a mental health condition, mostly younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. The question we ask ourselves about this place is whether the people living here have lives they would recognise as their own. Not whether the building is tidy or the records are in order, though both matter, but whether somebody has friendships, somewhere to go and some genuine say over an ordinary week. If everyone's week looks the same, we have got something wrong. So people here are involved in the shopping, the cooking and the decisions about their own rooms and their own time. Some go out to work or college, some use local groups and facilities, and some prefer a quieter life with a few things they enjoy properly. None of those is treated as the better answer. Communication takes the most effort. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things, and we treat behaviour as information rather than as a difficulty to be managed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit, meet the people living here and put the difficult questions to us directly.

Fairhaven is a residential care home in Bognor Regis. We support older people and adults living with mental ill health, including people whose difficulties involve eating disorders or alcohol and drug misuse, and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. A good many people come to us at a low point, after a hospital admission, a relapse or a stretch when living independently stopped working. What we try to offer is somewhere steady and unjudgemental to get your footing back. That means a settled routine where routine helps, flexibility where it does not, staff who are comfortable with the ups and downs of recovery, and no sense that somebody has to perform progress to be welcome here. People have their own rooms and a real say in how their day runs. We support people with medication, with health appointments, with eating well and with the ordinary business of managing money, paperwork and keeping in touch with family. We work alongside community mental health teams, GPs and specialist services rather than in parallel with them, and we plan with the person for the times when things get difficult. Respite stays can be a useful way of giving a family carer a break, or of trying the place out before any longer decision is taken. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Do come and see us and ask us anything.

Koinonia Christian Care in Worthing is a residential care home for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We are a Christian home, and for many of the people who live here that matters a great deal. There is the opportunity for worship, prayer and quiet, and for those who want it the companionship of a shared faith. Nobody is required to take part in any of it, and we welcome people who would rather not. Our everyday work is the ordinary business of a household run well. Help with washing, dressing and moving about at the person's own pace. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here with real choice. Rooms that people make their own. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute the findings. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and had senior staff check the care actually being given rather than the care described on paper. That work is continuing and we are not going to claim it is finished. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions honestly than leave a family to find it out later. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Here at Whitehaven, we are a care home based in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, and we support a wide range of people with varying needs and backgrounds. Our most recent Care Quality Commission rating is Good, which reflects the standard of care our team works hard to maintain every day. We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with learning disabilities or autism, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also provide respite care for those who need a short break from their usual living arrangements, and we have experience supporting individuals affected by eating disorders and alcohol or drug misuse. We understand that no two people are the same, and we take time to get to know each person properly before putting together a care plan that genuinely reflects who they are and what matters to them. Bognor Regis is a town with a real sense of community, and we try to make sure that Whitehaven feels like a natural part of that. We encourage the people we support to stay connected to the things they enjoy, whether that is getting out locally, keeping up with hobbies, or simply having good conversation with people they trust. Residential care can feel like a big step, for the person moving in and for their family. We try to make that transition as smooth as possible by being open, straightforward, and consistent. Families are always welcome to speak with us, ask questions, and stay involved in their loved one's care. If you are looking for a care home for yourself or someone close to you, we would be happy to have a conversation and show you around. We want you to feel confident that Whitehaven is the right place before any decisions are made.

    • Care Home

Augusta Court is a residential care home in Chichester. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and for younger adults who need a supportive household. Respite stays are available as well. The first fortnight after a move matters enormously, and we give it real thought. Before somebody arrives we want to know what time they wake, how they take their tea, what they cannot abide and who they want to be able to ring. Those details are what begin turning a strange room into their room. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do only as much as somebody needs. Where a resident can still manage something themselves, they keep it, and we are in no hurry to take things over. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person rather than managing a condition. We keep the day's rhythm steady and the surroundings familiar, give people time instead of finishing their sentences for them, and ask families about earlier life, because that knowledge is what makes sense of a mood or a repeated question. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon. A home is much easier to judge when nothing has been arranged for a visitor's benefit, and we would rather you saw us as we are.

    • Care Home

Sutton Court is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism. We run this as a home rather than a placement, and that distinction shapes everything about the way we work. The people who live here choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, what happens at the weekend and how much company they want. Our staff are here to make those choices workable, with support that might mean personal care, help with money and appointments, practical assistance to get out and about, or simply being nearby while somebody does something for themselves that takes a while. Autism support is worked out person by person rather than applied as a policy. We pay attention to sensory needs, to how much notice somebody wants before anything changes, and to the ways people show they are uncomfortable without using words. What we learn is recorded properly so that support does not shift with the rota, and we keep revisiting it as people change. Communication is central. Where somebody uses signs, symbols or their own particular way of making themselves understood, our staff learn it, and no decision is taken about a person without a genuine effort to involve them. Respite stays are available as well, giving families a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome and we are glad to show people round.

Here at Aldingbourne Cottage, we offer residential care for adults in a warm and welcoming home environment in Chichester, West Sussex. We support people with learning disabilities, autism, and physical disabilities, including younger adults who are building their independence and finding their own way in life. We also offer respite care for those who need a short break, whether that is planned or at short notice. We know that moving into a care home, or even just visiting for a short stay, can feel like a big step. Our aim is to make sure that from the moment someone comes through our door, they feel genuinely at home. We take time to get to know each person properly, understanding not just their care needs but their preferences, their routines, and the things that matter most to them day to day. The people we support are at the centre of every decision we make. We work closely with families and with the individuals themselves to put together care that feels personal rather than one size fits all. We believe strongly that having a learning disability, autism, or a physical disability should never limit what a person can enjoy or achieve, and we do everything we can to support people to live full and meaningful lives. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us as Good, which reflects the consistent effort our whole team puts into maintaining high standards across the board. That said, we are always looking at how we can do things better and listening to feedback from the people we support and their loved ones. If you would like to find out more about life at Aldingbourne Cottage or want to arrange a visit, we would love to hear from you.

We are Brockenhurst, a residential care home in Littlehampton, West Sussex. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home on their own, including those living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays for shorter periods. Living here should feel like living somewhere, not being placed somewhere. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own routines as far as they possibly can, and decide for themselves how much they want to join in. We pay attention to the small things that make a day bearable or pleasant: a decent breakfast, the newspaper, a walk in the garden, someone who has time to sit and listen. For people living with dementia, we try to work with the person in front of us rather than against them. That means knowing their history, recognising what unsettles them and having the patience to go at their pace. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to gloss over it. We have taken the findings seriously, made changes to how we plan and record care and how we support our staff, and we are being checked on our progress. If you are considering Brockenhurst for someone you love, ask us about it when you visit and we will answer properly.

Rosedale Care Home is a residential home in Horsham, West Sussex. We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody has, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

Sussex Grange Residential Care Home is in Chichester, West Sussex. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We are not a nursing home. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many older people that turns out to be exactly the right amount of support, because it takes away the effort and the worry without taking away the independence. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A familiar order to the day, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more surely than anything else. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what explains them to us when words begin to fail. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us.

    • Care Home

26 Tennyson Road, part of United Response, is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a house on an ordinary street rather than an institution, and that shows in ordinary ways. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. Because we are small, staff genuinely know the people they support, and that knowledge does more good than any amount of written assessment. Support is agreed with each person and built around them. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable, and support to do things for themselves rather than have them done. We expect people to take on more over time rather than settle into being looked after. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Bognor and the coast are part of ordinary life here, not an outing. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Clements House is a residential care home in Bognor Regis. We support older people, people managing mental health conditions, people with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, and we also offer respite stays for short planned periods. The people who live here have arrived by very different routes, and that shapes how we work. Some need steady, quiet support to stay well. Some need practical help with mobility, personal care and medication. Some are working through difficulties with food, or with alcohol or drugs, and in those situations we follow the plan agreed with the person's own clinical and recovery teams, without judgement and without pretending that progress runs in a straight line. What everybody gets is a room of their own, meals cooked here, and staff who treat them as an adult. Mental health support here is mostly about consistency. Familiar staff, a routine that holds, early recognition when somebody is becoming unwell and good working relationships with community mental health teams and general practitioners achieve far more than anything else. For residents with sensory loss, our staff announce themselves, explain what they are doing and leave belongings exactly where they were left. We are on the coast and people make use of it, for walks, for fresh air and for keeping local connections going. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The New Grange is a residential care home in Worthing, and dementia care is the heart of what we do rather than something we offer alongside everything else. We also take respite stays. Because most of the people living here are living with dementia, the house is set up around that: familiar routines, quiet places to sit, and staff who have the time to notice when somebody is unsettled and to stay with them until it passes. We believe a person's history matters as much as their diagnosis. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and with their family, learning about the work they did, the people they love, the food they grew up with and the habits that make a day feel normal. Those details are what let us offer comfort when words become harder to find. Daily life here is gentle but not empty. There is company if somebody wants it and privacy if they do not, help with personal care given discreetly, and meals cooked here that people are glad to sit down to. We keep the shape of the day predictable, because that does more good than any amount of organised activity. Families are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would far rather you came often and informally than felt you had to arrange a visit. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall.

The work of the house continues properly meanwhile. This is the home of the people who live in it. • Care Home

Larkswood is a residential care home in Worthing providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit a single routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out and about, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us, including the parts we would rather not hear.

Burleys Wood provides residential and nursing care in Crawley, West Sussex. We support older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults with nursing needs. Respite stays are available for shorter periods of care. Having both residential and nursing care here means people can often stay with us as their health needs change rather than facing another move. But most of what makes a day good or bad has little to do with nursing. It is whether somebody was helped at their own pace, whether the food was something they actually wanted, whether their room feels like theirs and whether they were asked rather than told. Those are the things we want to be judged on. We need to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have an action plan in place and we are working through it with colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly instead of finding it elsewhere. If you are considering us for a relative, please come and visit. Look at the home properly, speak to our nurses and the people living here, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed. We will answer plainly rather than steering you towards a brochure.

Here at Edward House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Burgess Hill, West Sussex. Our home is a warm and familiar place where residents are supported to live comfortably, with their independence and dignity always at the centre of everything we do. We specialise in older person care, residential care, dementia care, and respite care. Whether someone moves in with us on a longer term basis or joins us for a short stay to recover or give family members a break, we work hard to make sure the transition feels as smooth and reassuring as possible. We take time to get to know each person properly, understanding their routines, preferences, and life history, so that the care we provide genuinely fits around them rather than the other way around. For those living with dementia, we know how much the environment and the people around you matter. We approach dementia care thoughtfully, focusing on familiarity, calm and meaningful connection. Our aim is always to support people to feel safe and understood. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good. That rating reflects the effort our whole team puts in every day, and it gives families confidence that their loved ones are in a place that takes its responsibilities seriously. Families are an important part of life here at Edward House and we genuinely welcome their involvement. Moving into a care home is a significant step for anyone, and we want both residents and their families to feel informed, included, and at ease from the very first conversation. If you would like to find out more about what we offer or come and have a look around, we would be very happy to hear from you.

    • Care Home

We are Abelands, a residential care home in Chichester, West Sussex. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions and people with a visual or hearing impairment, including younger adults. Respite stays are available. We plan around individuals rather than around a routine. The people living here have quite different notions of a good week. Some want to be busy, with work, college, sport or regular groups and plenty of getting out into Chichester. Others want quiet and a rhythm they can rely on, and where change is unsettling we keep things steady and prepare carefully for anything unusual. Because we also support people with sight or hearing impairment, communication gets proper attention. How somebody prefers to be given information, and how they let us know what they want, is not a detail to be worked out later. It is the basis of everything else. We take positive risk seriously too. Being overcautious on somebody else's behalf is easier for us and much worse for them, so decisions get talked through with the person and those who know them well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are used to detailed questions from families and commissioners and we welcome them. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home on Ellasdale Road in Bognor Regis, supporting a broad range of adults. Those living here include older people, some living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We are home to younger adults as well as older ones, and we offer respite stays. A mixed household asks more of us rather than less. One routine will not suit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person and build from there. For some it is structure and company. For others it is being left largely to themselves, and we treat that as a legitimate preference rather than something to be talked out of. Where somebody communicates differently, whether because of a sensory impairment or for another reason, we deal with that first and properly. Everything else we do rests on it. Where a person can still do something themselves we support them to keep doing it, even when stepping in would be quicker. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and their families regularly what we should be doing differently.

Arranging and funding a care home place in West Sussex

Funding rarely feels pressing until a hospital discharge date appears, and by then the useful conversations are the ones that should already have happened. Any adult who appears to need care and support has the right to ask for an assessment, whatever their savings look like, and that assessment is the gateway to almost everything else.

Starting with a care needs assessment

The assessment looks at daily living: washing, dressing, medication, mobility, eating, and how safe someone is on their own overnight. It produces a written record of what support is needed and whether a residential setting is the right answer, which is worth having even for families who expect to pay privately. West Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying out that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. A carer living in the household can request a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time.

What a placement is likely to cost

Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows the care assessment and looks at income, savings and other capital. Someone whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the full fee themselves, while those below it receive help on a sliding scale. Fees differ from home to home across West Sussex, and they usually reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much one to one support a resident needs. Ask any home to set out in writing what the weekly fee covers and what is charged separately, because extras such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings are often billed on top.

Choosing between care homes in West Sussex

224 providers is a large field, and narrowing it is mostly a matter of applying filters that actually matter to the person moving in rather than trying to read every profile.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every rating on this page comes from the Care Quality Commission. Homes rated Outstanding, such as Crawford Care Home, have been judged to go beyond what inspectors expect as standard, while a Good rating means the home met every standard tested. A Requires Improvement judgement is not automatically a reason to strike a home off, but it does mean reading the report to see what was found, whether the concerns touched on safety or on record keeping, and how recently the visit took place. Homes shown as not yet rated are usually newer registrations that have not had a first full inspection, so there is less published evidence to work from and the questions you ask on a visit carry more weight.

What to look for when you visit

Visit at a time that has not been chosen for you, ideally around a mealtime, and pay attention to how staff speak to residents rather than to how the entrance hall looks. Ask how many carers are on shift overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and what the turnover of staff has been over the past year, since stable teams tend to produce steadier care. If dementia is part of the picture, ask what specific training the staff have completed and how the home supports someone who becomes distressed. Distance matters more than families expect: a home that relatives can reach easily gets visited often, and regular visitors are one of the better safeguards a resident can have.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in West Sussex

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in West Sussex?

Contact West Sussex County Council and ask adult social care for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can request it on behalf of a relative with their agreement. The assessment covers daily tasks, mobility, medication and night time safety, and results in a written record of what support is needed. If a hospital stay is involved, the ward team can refer directly to speed things up.

Can West Sussex County Council pay for a residential placement?

It can, provided the person meets both the care eligibility criteria and the financial test. West Sussex County Council carries out a financial assessment after the needs assessment, looking at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes. Those with capital above the national threshold usually fund the placement themselves, though they can still ask the council for an assessment and for advice. Where the council does contribute, it will agree a personal budget covering the assessed needs.

Which providers are included in this West Sussex listing?

This page brings together two hundred and seventeen residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in West Sussex. They are homes providing personal care and daily support rather than nursing delivered on site by registered nurses. The list spans large purpose built homes and small houses supporting a handful of people, including providers such as Walberton Place Care Home, Ashton Manor and Elizabeth House. Each profile carries the current rating and links through to the published inspection report.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home supports people with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, medication prompts and meals, with staff on hand day and night. A nursing home is registered to provide the same support plus clinical care from registered nurses on the premises, which suits people with wounds, complex medication regimes or conditions needing regular clinical oversight. Every home on this page is registered for residential care. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is worth checking whether a home can meet that need or whether a further move would follow.

How early should families begin looking at homes in West Sussex?

Earlier than most people do. Starting while the current arrangement is still holding gives you time to visit properly, compare inspection reports and put a name down where a home has a waiting list. Crisis moves, particularly those arranged around a discharge date, tend to narrow the choice to whatever has a bed free that week. Even a rough shortlist drawn up in advance makes a sudden decision far less fraught.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in West Sussex?

Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, how long the registered manager has been in post, and what staff turnover has looked like recently. Ask to see a sample weekly activity plan and a menu, and check what happens when someone declines a meal or wants to eat at a different time. Request a written breakdown of the weekly fee and a clear list of what falls outside it, along with the notice period and the policy on fee increases. Finally, ask how the home keeps families informed when something changes, and how it handles a concern or complaint.
