Care Homes in West Sussex 224 care homes · 178 rated Good by CQC

Care homes in West Sussex do not all sit at the same level of inspected quality, and the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement across this list, with a further group of homes not yet rated. Two hundred and seventeen residential care homes match the search, each one registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on the premises. Where money forms part of the question, West Sussex County Council is the body that carries out a care needs assessment and decides whether someone qualifies for funded support, so approaching the council early tends to save time later on. A rating on its own is only a summary, though, and it will not tell you how a home feels on an ordinary weekday. Open the profiles that look promising, read the full inspection report sitting behind each judgement, and let the detail in those reports shape the questions you put to a manager before anyone commits to a move.

    • Care Home

Silver Court in East Grinstead provides residential care for older people, including many residents living with dementia. We are a home where staff and residents know each other properly, and most of what we do rests on that familiarity. The day is not run to a strict timetable. People get up when they are ready, eat food cooked on the premises that is worth looking forward to, and spend their time as they wish, in company or quietly in their own room. Support with washing and dressing is given unhurriedly, because dignity is largely a matter of pace and manner. Dementia care asks a lot of small, patient things. Giving someone time to answer rather than filling the silence. Understanding that a person looking for a house they left decades ago is expressing a real feeling that deserves a real response. Knowing enough about someone's earlier life to find what comforts them. Families are part of the home here. Visit when it suits you, share a meal, join in, and tell us honestly when something is not right. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

We are Lavender Lodge, a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. With that range of needs in one home, planning has to be individual. We spend real time at the start working out how a person communicates, what they manage on their own, where they want help and what they would rather nobody did for them. Getting it wrong early is hard to undo. Where dementia and a sensory impairment occur together, which happens often, it pays to check the simple explanation first. A hearing aid that is not working accounts for a great deal that gets recorded as confusion. We try to look at the whole person rather than adding diagnoses together. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than let a family discover it elsewhere. We know what the inspection identified, work is in hand on it, and we are willing to go through the detail with anyone considering a place here.

    • Care Home

Appletree House Residential Care Home provides residential care in Lancing, West Sussex, for older people. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We are a straightforward sort of place. There is no elaborate philosophy behind what we do beyond looking after people properly and letting them get on with their lives. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about if a person needs them. People choose how much they want to join in. Some are in the lounge from breakfast onwards and some prefer their own room with the door propped open, and neither choice earns any remark from us. The point of a home is that you can live in it the way you want to. Lancing and the coast around it are home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors, and a good deal of flexibility about when family can come. They can come whenever they like. Respite stays are useful when a family carer needs a break or when somebody is recovering their strength after being unwell. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

We at Little Smugglers are proud to offer specialist residential care in the peaceful village setting of Crawley Down, West Sussex. Our home provides a supportive place to live for younger adults with learning disabilities and autism, alongside respite care for families who need short term support. Nestled within the leafy surroundings of the RH postcode area, our home benefits from the calm, semi rural character that Crawley Down is known for. This gentle environment offers residents a real sense of community, with quiet lanes, open green spaces and the wider natural beauty of West Sussex on the doorstep. It is a setting we feel is ideally suited to encouraging confidence, independence and wellbeing for the people we support. Our focus is on personalised residential care for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger people at important stages of their lives. In practice, this means we take time to understand each person as an individual, shaping daily routines, communication approaches and activities around their preferences, sensory needs and personal goals. Whether someone thrives on structure and predictability, enjoys creative pursuits, or is working towards greater independence in daily living skills, our team is here to walk that journey alongside them. For families considering respite care, we understand how important it is to know your loved one is somewhere safe, warm and welcoming, even for a short stay. Respite with us is more than a break for family carers. It is an opportunity for the person staying with us to enjoy new experiences, meet others and feel genuinely at home from the moment they arrive. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, published in April 2023, gave us an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We believe in being open about this. The inspection also recognised real strengths in our home, with Good ratings across the Safe, Effective and Caring domains. This reflects the compassion, dignity and day to day quality of support that our team provides. In the areas identified for improvement, namely Responsive and Well led, we are committed to listening, learning and strengthening our practice so that every aspect of life here reaches the standard our residents and their families rightly expect. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we know it comes with many questions and understandable emotions. We warmly invite families to get in touch, ask anything that is on your mind and, when the time feels right, come and see our home for yourself. At Little Smugglers, we are here to listen, to reassure and to help you find the right way forward for your loved one.

Marlow in Worthing is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults. Our experience covers learning disabilities and autism, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss, and we also offer respite stays. Supporting that range means building round individuals rather than running everyone the same way. We spend time with a person, and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage themselves and where help is actually wanted. Help with personal care, mobility, medication and health appointments is recorded in detail so it happens consistently whoever is on shift. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute what was found. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened our systems for medicines and record keeping, and increased how closely senior staff check the support actually being given rather than the support described on paper. That work continues and we are not going to claim otherwise. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions honestly than leave a family to find it out later. Anybody considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, and ask us anything at all, including the questions people are often too polite to put first.

At Hammonds, we provide residential care for a wide range of people in the heart of Bognor Regis, West Sussex. Our home supports older adults, younger adults, people living with dementia, those with learning disabilities or autism, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements, or whose families need some time to rest. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will ever make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our aim is to make Hammonds feel like a genuine home, somewhere people feel safe, respected, and comfortable in their daily lives. We try to get to know each person as an individual, understanding their routines, preferences, and what matters most to them, so that the care we provide fits around their life rather than the other way around. We are open about the fact that our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating. We have taken that feedback seriously and are actively working through the improvements identified. We believe in being honest with the people we support and their families, and we would rather be upfront about where we are and what we are doing about it than gloss over it. Progress is being made and we are committed to ensuring that care at Hammonds continues to develop and improve. If you are considering Hammonds for yourself or someone you care about, we warmly invite you to come and visit us, meet the team, and see the home for yourself. We are always happy to talk through your situation and answer any questions you might have. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

The Heathers is a residential care home in Worthing. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available too. We want the home to feel like a household rather than an institution, which in practice means residents run their own days as far as they are able. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and decide how much time to spend with others. Rooms are personalised from the start, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures because a room that looks like yours settles you far faster. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. Dementia care rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Being near the coast, a change of scene is easy to arrange. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit The Heathers.

Langbury House is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, supporting adults who need help with daily living in an ordinary house rather than an institution. The people who live here include adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic, people living with a physical disability, people with a visual or hearing impairment, and younger adults. We adapt how we communicate and how the house is used so that everybody can take part in what is happening rather than watching from the edge of it. We start with the person. We find out how they communicate, what they want help with, what they would rather do for themselves and what they would like to work towards. Support plans are written with them, and with families or advocates where that is wanted, and we revisit them as circumstances change. We also offer respite stays, giving family carers a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and properly staffed. We would rather be open about our regulator. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not satisfied with that. We have taken it seriously, there is work in hand to put things right, and we are willing to go through it in detail with anyone considering us. • Care Home

St Mary's Residential Care Home is in Worthing, West Sussex, and we care for older people, including many residents living with dementia and people with a physical disability. As a residential home our work is about daily life supported well rather than clinical care, and we bring in general practitioners, district nurses and other community professionals when they are needed. The things that make a residential home good are not dramatic. They are whether someone is helped to get up at the hour they would choose, whether the food is worth looking forward to, whether the person helping you wash knows your name and your history, and whether anybody notices when you are out of sorts. We spend our effort there. For residents living with dementia, we keep staffing steady and the day predictable, and we ask families to tell us about the person's life so that conversation has somewhere to start. Where someone has a physical disability, we take trouble over how assistance is given, because being helped clumsily is its own kind of loss. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or someone wants support and company while recovering. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Mill River Lodge is a nursing home in Horsham, West Sussex, offering both residential and nursing care for older people and for younger adults who need skilled support. Because we provide residential and nursing care in one place, people can often stay with us as their health changes rather than having to move again when needs increase. We look after people living with dementia and people with complex medical conditions, and we welcome respite stays for families needing a break or for someone recovering after a spell in hospital. We start with the person. What time do you like to get up, what do you enjoy eating, who do you want to see, what can you still do yourself and what would you rather have help with. Those answers shape the care plan, and the clinical side of things fits around them wherever it safely can. Where somebody is living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and our staff are trained to look for the cause of distress rather than simply managing it. Relatives are welcome throughout the day, and we take the view that families should hear from us before they have to ask, particularly when something has changed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Mill River Lodge for someone close to you, come and visit, talk to the nurses and carers and see whether it feels like somewhere they could be at home.

Park Lodge is a residential care home in Crawley supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, and we offer respite stays. We keep the house small and settled on purpose. The people who live here know each other and know the staff, and support can be shaped around individuals rather than around a timetable that has to cover a large building. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings, and a real say in how the household runs, from what is cooked to how the week is planned. Our staff support people to do things rather than doing things for them. Cooking, shopping, managing money, using transport and getting out locally are done together, because independence is built through practice rather than handed over. Communication is the foundation of all of it. Some of the people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or objects, and others show us what they need through behaviour that takes patience to read properly. We learn each person's way and keep learning as it changes. Routines are steady here and changes are planned and talked through well in advance. We also think carefully about sensory things such as noise, light and how busy a space feels. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. Avon Manor is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, providing a settled home for older people who need support with daily living. We care for residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose usual carer needs a rest. We aim for an ordinary life with good support behind it. Residents choose when they get up, how they spend their days and what they eat. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered, down to how somebody takes their tea. There is company and activity for those who enjoy it and no pressure on anyone who would rather have peace. Dementia support runs through everything we do. We ask families to tell us about a person's life, their work, their music, their habits and their dislikes, because that knowledge is what allows staff to offer comfort that genuinely comforts. Familiar faces, calm surroundings and an unhurried pace do far more good than any rigid approach. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses so that changes in health are picked up early, and we keep families properly informed. Relatives are welcome whenever it suits them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please come and see the home for yourself.

Harwich House is a residential care home in Littlehampton, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with a physical disability, including younger adults. We begin with the person rather than with a template. How someone communicates, what helps them feel settled, what they find difficult and what they want their week to hold. That understanding is recorded properly so the whole team works consistently, and it is revisited as people change their minds, because adults are entitled to do exactly that. Support covers personal care, medication and health appointments, cooking, shopping and managing money, help with mobility and equipment where it is needed, and encouragement to get out into Littlehampton and the surrounding area for college, work, clubs, the seafront, family visits or simply company. Where somebody wants to take a risk that most adults take without thinking, our job is to work out how to make it safe enough rather than to refuse by habit. Respite stays are available as well, giving families a planned break while their relative is somewhere that becomes familiar quickly. We work openly with families, social workers and health colleagues, and we would rather raise something early than let it grow. Queens Lodge is a residential care home in Crawley, West Sussex. We are home to adults who need support with everyday life, including people with a learning disability and autistic people, and we also welcome guests for shorter respite stays while a family carer takes a break. Whatever brings someone to us, we start in the same place, by getting to know what a good day looks like for them and who and what matters most. We try to keep the house calm and predictable, because routine and familiar faces can make the difference between a difficult morning and an easy one. People choose when they get up, how they spend their time and what they eat, and we support them to carry on with the things they already enjoy, whether that is a regular trip into town, a college course, seeing family or a quiet corner with their own music. Where someone needs help with personal care, it is given discreetly and at their pace. Our team works alongside GPs, community nurses and specialist practitioners so that health needs are picked up early rather than left to become urgent. Families tell us they want to be kept informed, so we telephone, we listen, and we say so plainly when something has not gone to plan. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. • Care Home

Hambrook Meadows is a residential care home in Chichester, West Sussex, offering a settled and comfortable home for older people who are finding it hard to manage on their own. We think of this as a home first. People choose when they get up, where they sit, what they eat and how they spend the day. Care is given quietly, with proper regard for privacy and dignity, and we support people to keep doing whatever they can still manage themselves, because independence that is quietly taken over is very hard to get back. Staff here know everybody well, including the things that never appear in a care plan: who likes an early start, who would rather have breakfast in their own room, who wants the company of the lounge and who would sooner have their own quiet. It is that familiarity, more than any policy, that makes an ordinary day here feel ordinary. Families are part of the household. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them, we keep relatives properly informed, and we would far rather somebody raised a worry with us early than sat on it. We also offer respite stays, for people needing support after illness or a hospital admission, and for families who care for a relative at home and need a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us and make up your own mind.

    • Care Home

Rosewood is a residential care home in Burgess Hill supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays. We run this as a household rather than a service with bedrooms attached. People choose how their rooms look, what they eat, when they get up and how much of the day they spend in company. Those choices are not an extra laid on top of the care. They are most of what makes a place worth living in, and they take consistent effort to protect when staff change and pressures build. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than only around risk. Cooking, shopping, managing money, using the bus, getting to college, work or activities, and keeping up with family and friends. Where somebody needs a great deal of help, we still look hard for the parts they can take on themselves, because independence disappears quietly unless someone is watching for it. Communication and environment get real attention. We learn how each person tells us what they want, including those who use little or no speech, and we adjust to them rather than the reverse. Noise, lighting, predictability and having somewhere quiet to retreat to all shape how a day turns out. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Ball Tree Croft is a residential care home in Lancing. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or autism, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also take respite bookings. Because people arrive here by very different routes, we do not run the home to one pattern. Some residents need a good deal of hands on support through the day. Others mainly want a settled base, a bit of structure and somebody reliable to check in with. We work out which is which by asking, and we keep asking, because what somebody needs on arrival is rarely what they need a year later. People keep their own belongings around them, choose how the day goes and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Families are welcome throughout the day and we would rather they came often and informally. Communication gets close attention here, because understanding a person properly is what allows them to have a say in their own life. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are considering residential or respite care in West Sussex, please arrange to come and see us.

    • Care Home

Huntley is a small residential home in Worthing supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Keeping the house small is deliberate. It means everybody knows each other and the staff properly, the atmosphere stays calm, and it is easy to notice when somebody is not quite themselves. People choose how their own room looks, join in with the shopping and cooking if they want to, and have a genuine say in how the household runs. Routines are built around the individual, including the ones that need to stay exactly the same from one day to the next, because predictability is often what allows a person to relax enough to try something new. Support is agreed with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, whether speech, signing, pictures or something particular to them, and we learn it properly rather than guessing. Life here is meant to include the world outside. People get out into Worthing and along the coast, to activities, to work, to see family, and we provide as much or as little support as that actually takes rather than hovering. Respite stays are available for people who need a short break or whose family carers do. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to come and look round.

Here at Keychange Charity Rosemary Mount Care Home in Worthing, West Sussex, we provide warm and attentive residential care for older people in a setting that genuinely feels like home. We are a care home with a clear focus: to support each person who lives with us in a way that respects their individuality, their history and their preferences. Our team works hard every day to make sure that life here is comfortable, meaningful and as enjoyable as possible. We take the time to get to know the people in our care and their families, because good care starts with genuinely understanding someone, not just their needs on paper but who they are as a person. We specialise in older person care and residential care, and we are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good. That rating matters to us because it reflects the everyday effort of our staff and the trust that residents and families place in us. We encourage residents to maintain connections with the people and places that matter to them, and we welcome family members and friends as an important part of life here. Hilgay Care Home is a residential care home in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home alone, including a good many living with dementia, and some younger adults. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about where that line falls. What we do is the daily work of helping somebody wash and dress, take their medicines, eat properly, move about safely and stay connected to other people. Done well that is a skilled job and it depends almost entirely on whether staff know the person, so keeping our team is where most of our effort goes rather than into refurbishment. For residents with dementia we have found steadiness beats stimulation. The same faces, meals at the same times, a bedroom that looks like the person's own room, and nothing moved without a reason. Within that there is plenty going on, and a great deal of tea. We ask families for the detail that no assessment ever captures, and we ask them to tell us promptly when we have got something wrong, because small problems are much cheaper to put right early. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Call in and see us, with or without warning.

    • Care Home

Newhaven is a residential home in Bognor Regis supporting adults with a range of needs, including people living with mental health conditions, people with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment, people living with an eating disorder, and people in recovery from alcohol or drug misuse. We support both older and younger adults, and we offer respite stays. Supporting that range under one roof only works if each person is known properly. A house where everybody is offered the same routine will suit some and quietly fail others, so we start from the individual rather than the category. Where somebody is in recovery, or living with a mental health condition, consistency matters more than anything else we could provide. A difficult stretch is part of the pattern rather than a crisis, and treating it as a crisis rarely helps. Where somebody is living with an eating disorder, mealtimes may be the hardest part of the day, and the support around them has to be calm and free of pressure or judgement. Staff working in these areas are prepared for them specifically. The point of all of it is that people have a life rather than a placement. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and see how the house actually runs.

Forest View is a residential care home in Burgess Hill. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our aim is straightforward. People who live here should feel that this is their own home, with their own routine, their own visitors and their own say in how the day runs. We ask about the details that matter, from when somebody likes to get up to how they take their tea, and we expect our staff to know those things rather than look them up. For residents living with dementia we keep the pace calm and the routine familiar, and we work with families to learn a person's history so that we can offer conversation and reassurance which connects with something real. We want to be open about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accept that judgement, we have taken it seriously, and we are working through what was identified rather than explaining it away. If you are considering the home for a relative, we would encourage you to ask us directly what has changed and what we are still working on, and we will answer honestly. You are welcome to visit and see the home as it is on an ordinary day.

Oak House and Maple Lodge are our two homes in Burgess Hill, supporting adults living with mental ill health, including younger adults. We offer respite stays as well as longer term places. Many of the people who come to us have had an unsettled time beforehand, sometimes in hospital, sometimes in placements that did not work out. Nobody here is expected to settle quickly, and a slow start is not treated as a failure. Trust takes however long it takes. Running two smaller houses rather than one large building suits the work. Staff know everybody properly, routines can be genuinely individual, and each house feels like a household rather than a facility. What we offer first is stability. A calm home, staff who are present and who know you, and a day that belongs to the person rather than to the rota. Residents choose how they spend their time. We will encourage someone who has withdrawn to join in, and we will equally leave a person in peace when that is what helps. Practical support covers medication, appointments, benefits and paperwork, cooking, laundry and looking after a room. Alongside that we work on the skills and confidence that make a more independent life possible, and we take people's own goals seriously. For younger adults in particular this is often a stage rather than a destination. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch to visit.

We are Elizabeth House, a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We provide a home for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite stays. Residential care at its best means helping with the things that have become difficult and leaving everything else in the hands of the person themselves. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth getting up for. Anything beyond our registration we arrange with district nurses and GPs rather than trying to cover it ourselves. Dementia shapes much of our day. Knowing who somebody has been tells us more than any list of symptoms does. A resident who spent forty years working to a particular rhythm or raising a family nearby still carries that with them, and a conversation that connects with it can turn an afternoon around. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed as fully as anyone living here permanently, whether they are recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

The Orchards is a residential care home in Crawley supporting younger adults, including people who have a learning disability, autistic people and people with a physical disability. The people who live here have their own routines, interests and opinions, and the support we provide is meant to make those possible rather than to organise them out of existence. That might mean help with personal care and medication, practical support with cooking, laundry and money, assistance with moving safely about the house, or somebody alongside a person at college, at work or out in town. Most people want a mixture, and what they want changes over time. Physical disability support takes time done properly. Transfers and moving are unhurried, explained as they happen and carried out with the right equipment, because comfort and dignity depend on the details. For autistic people we support, notice of change, clear communication and a sensible approach to noise and busyness in shared spaces make the greatest difference. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, giving families a planned break and giving people a chance to get to know us. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across West Sussex are welcome to visit. Please contact us to arrange a time.

    • Care Home

Ashbury Care Home in Bognor Regis is a residential home supporting older people and younger adults. Our experience covers dementia, learning disabilities and autism, and mental health needs, and we also offer respite stays. With that range of people we build round individuals rather than running one routine and expecting everybody to fit it. Before anyone moves in we spend time with them and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage perfectly well themselves, where help would be welcome and what they would rather we left alone. That becomes the plan, and it is theirs to change. Help with personal care, medication and health appointments is given as the person has asked and written down precisely, so that the same thing happens whoever is on shift. Consistency is what allows people to relax, and it matters especially for anyone who finds change difficult. Where somebody communicates in their own way we learn it and record it. With dementia we lean on knowing a person well, gathering their history with their family and keeping it current, so staff respond to the person rather than the behaviour. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we aim to be steady and clear rather than unpredictable. Meals are cooked here with real choice. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Chichester, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come. Please come and see the home for yourself before deciding anything.

Abbey Dean is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, caring for older people who need support with everyday life, including those living with dementia. We provide the daily practical help that makes living comfortably possible: assistance to wash and dress, medication given properly and on time, meals cooked on the premises, help to move about safely and staff available through the night. Beyond that we try not to organise people's lives for them. Residents decide when they get up, where they spend the day and who they want to see. Dementia care here depends on continuity. Familiar faces, a predictable rhythm and surroundings that stay where they are expected to be reduce a great deal of anxiety, so we plan rotas accordingly and take time to learn about each resident's life from their family. Knowing that somebody spent forty years in a particular trade or has always loathed being fussed over is genuinely useful information. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to help somebody regain confidence after illness or a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families along the West Sussex coast are welcome to visit. Ring us and we will arrange a time to show you round.

We are Courtwick Lodge, a residential care home in Littlehampton, West Sussex. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults. Respite stays are available. We plan around individuals rather than around a single routine. The people living here have quite different ideas of a good week. Some want to be busy, with work, college, sport or regular groups and plenty of getting out along the coast. Others want quiet and a rhythm they can rely on, and where change is unsettling we keep things steady and prepare carefully for anything unusual. Because we also support people with physical disabilities, a good deal of our attention goes on access, equipment and the practical business of getting about. Where those needs are met properly and without fuss, they stop shaping somebody's day. We are careful about independence too. If somebody can do a thing themselves, more slowly than we could do it for them, that is their time and their decision, and we work at their pace. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we have, we would encourage families and commissioners to ask us detailed questions about staffing, training and how support is planned here. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Sunkist Lodge is a residential care home in Worthing. We support older people and younger adults, including people with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We are not a large place and that shapes how we work. Staff know everyone who lives here, not as a set of care needs but as people with histories, tastes and opinions, and that knowledge is what lets us notice early when somebody is unwell or unhappy. Nobody has to explain themselves twice in a house where they are known. Day to day, life belongs to the person living it. People get up when they wake rather than when a rota suggests, keep their own belongings and furniture around them, spend the day in company or alone as they prefer, and are helped with washing and dressing quietly and at their own pace. Meals are cooked here and we ask what people want rather than presenting them with a fixed menu. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition, people tell us that steadiness and clear expectations help more than reassurance does, so we try to be predictable and straightforward, and we work with community teams rather than in isolation. Families are welcome at any reasonable time. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and anyone considering a place is welcome to visit.

Walstead Place Care Home is a residential care home in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. We are home to older people who need support with daily life and to younger adults who need residential care, and we welcome people for respite stays. We take the settling in period slowly, because moving into a care home usually follows a difficult stretch and nobody does their best in a rush. We ask about the routines of a lifetime, the food someone actually likes, whether they are an early riser or would rather have a lie in, and we build around that instead of expecting people to adapt to us. Rooms belong to the people in them, furnished with their own things, and we knock before we come in. Days are unhurried. Some residents want company, conversation and a trip out, others want the paper and peace, and both are entirely reasonable. Our team stays settled, which means residents are cared for by people who know them and that changes in health or mood get noticed early. We work with local GPs and community nurses so that problems are dealt with before they become urgent. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are registered with them and inspected against their standards, and we are glad to talk through our own quality checks. Please come and visit us in Haywards Heath.

    • Care Home

Highgrove House is a residential care home in Worthing for older people who need help with daily living. We support people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays. Our aim is an ordinary life with the help that makes it possible. People keep their own hours and their own belongings, choose where and with whom to spend the day, and are helped with washing, dressing and moving about as privately and unhurriedly as we can arrange. Meals are cooked on the premises with real choice at each one. Where somebody has a physical disability, independence often turns on practicalities: the right equipment, a room arranged so that things are within reach, and help given at the moment it is needed rather than instead of the person trying. We would rather support somebody to do a thing slowly than do it for them quickly. With dementia and with mental health needs, consistency is what helps. Familiar faces, a steady rhythm to the day, and staff who know a person well enough to understand what lies behind a difficult afternoon. We write down what we learn with families so that it stays with the home rather than leaving with a shift. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are always welcome.

    • Care Home

Ashton Manor is a residential care home in Bognor Regis providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia and people living with mental health conditions. We are not a large institution and we do not try to run like one. People keep their own routines as far as they can, which means breakfast when you wake rather than when a trolley arrives, and a day shaped around what a person actually enjoys. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small things that become difficult alone. For people living with dementia and for those managing mental health conditions, patience and familiarity achieve more than any amount of procedure. Our staff tend to stay with us, which means people here are looked after by faces they recognise, and that counts for a great deal when memory or mood is unpredictable. Families are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

We are a small residential care home on Stone Lane in Worthing, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and people managing mental health conditions, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a genuine break. This is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we try to run it that way. People have their own rooms, their own routines and a real say in how their days go. Support is about making ordinary things possible rather than doing them for people. Cooking a meal you actually want. Doing your own shopping. Managing money and appointments. Getting to a club, a course or a job. Keeping in touch with family and friends. We pay attention to that distinction, because independence is quietly eroded by help that arrives too quickly. Communication is something we work at. Not everybody here uses many words, and understanding somebody properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected rather than assumptions. Plans are written with the person and changed when they stop fitting, and we work alongside families and with social work and mental health colleagues so that support is joined up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and privacy, where any home can drift without noticing. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, please come and visit, meet the people who live here and ask us whatever you need to know.

Clapham Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex. We provide a home for older people and we also support some younger adults, along with offering respite stays for those who need a short period of care or whose family carer needs a break. We would rather be judged on ordinary things than on anything grand. Knowing how everybody likes their tea. Remembering which chair belongs to whom. Understanding who wants company from breakfast onwards and who would far rather be left with a newspaper. Helping somebody up when they wake rather than when it suits the rota. We ask about these preferences, write them down and expect them to be followed, because that is most of what separates a home from an institution. Residents keep their own furniture and photographs and decide how their days run. Families are welcome whenever it suits them, and we keep in touch openly rather than only ringing when there is a problem. Worthing is close by and we help people get out when they are able, whether that is the seafront, the shops or simply the garden. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are genuinely looking for. • Care Home

Ashdown Lodge is a residential care home in Littlehampton, West Sussex, providing a settled and comfortable home for older people who are finding it hard to manage on their own. A good deal of our work is with people living with dementia. We keep the day unhurried and familiar, we avoid changing things without good reason, and we spend time at the start learning about somebody's life, family, work and habits, because knowing who a person has been tells us far more about how to support them now than any list of needs. Families help enormously with that, and we ask them for the small details as much as the medical ones. Beyond that, life here is decided by the people living it. Some want company and whatever is going on; others would rather have their own room and their own quiet. Both are perfectly reasonable. Visitors are welcome at whatever time suits them, and we keep relatives properly informed about how things are going. We also offer respite stays, which suit family carers needing a planned break and people who need support for a few weeks after illness or a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we treat as a starting point rather than a destination. If you are looking at homes near Littlehampton, please come and see us on an ordinary day.

The Lighthouse Selsey is a residential care home in Selsey, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults moving towards a more independent life. Ordinary life is the point of the place. People here are supported to cook, shop, keep their rooms exactly as they want them, get out to college, work or a club, and have a genuine say in how the week is arranged. For autistic residents we pay close attention to the things that make a home manageable: predictable routines, proper warning before anything changes, and a quiet space to go to when the day has been too much. Support is offered at whatever level suits the person. We help where help is genuinely wanted and stand back where it is not, and we are as interested in what somebody can do independently as in what they need a hand with. Respite stays are available, which can give a family a break or serve as a trial for somebody considering a move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Walberton Place is a residential care home near Arundel in West Sussex. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays for families needing a planned break. We try to run this as a household rather than a facility, and the test of that lies in ordinary things. Whether staff knock and wait. Whether you can get a cup of tea late in the evening. Whether the person helping you knows what you did for a living. Whether anybody notices when you have been quieter than usual for a few days. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the working life, the places, the music and the names. Those are what still connect when a great deal else has gone, and they cannot be learned from a form. Respite guests are looked after properly rather than simply accommodated. We ask beforehand how the person likes things done, since a fortnight gives us no time to learn it slowly. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome unannounced.

In practice, this involves attentive day to day support with everything from personal care and medication to meals, mobility, and companionship. We take the time to understand each person's history, preferences, and routines, so that the care we provide feels familiar and dignified rather than institutional. Families can take comfort in knowing that their loved one is supported by a team who genuinely care about wellbeing, social connection, and quality of life. We believe that a good home is one where residents continue to enjoy the small pleasures that matter most, whether that is a favourite meal, a quiet afternoon with a book, conversation with friends, or simply the reassurance of knowing help is always close at hand. Our environment is designed to feel domestic and homely, encouraging residents to settle in comfortably and families to visit freely. White Lodge Residential Home has been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission across all five inspection domains, namely Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led, following its most recent inspection. • Care Home

Bradshaw Lodge is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, supporting older people and younger adults from across West Sussex, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. A care home is judged by its ordinary days rather than its brochure, so that is where our attention goes. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Personal care offered calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Rooms that look like they belong to the person living in them. Staff awake overnight. Enough happening in the house to give the day a shape, and nobody pressed into joining anything they have no interest in. People keep their own routines wherever we can arrange it, because a home that insists everyone rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has quietly stopped being a home. For residents with a physical disability, getting about matters enormously. Accessible bathrooms, the right equipment, and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move. Mobility lost because assistance was inconvenient is easy to cause and very hard to reverse, so we work at preventing it. Where dementia is part of somebody's life we work on familiarity and calm instead of correction, and we ask relatives early for the history that helps us reach a person when they are distressed. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see the home, unannounced if you prefer, and talk to the people who already live here.

Here at Keychange Charity Romans Care Home, we are proud to be part of the Southwick community in West Sussex, offering a warm and homely environment where the people in our care are genuinely valued and respected. We support a range of individuals, including older people, younger adults, and those living with a learning disability or autism. Our approach is straightforward: we take the time to understand each person as an individual, building support around their needs, preferences and goals rather than fitting them into a one size fits all routine. Residential care can feel like a big step, and we understand that both the person moving in and their family need to feel confident that they are in the right place. We work hard to create an atmosphere that feels less like a care setting and more like a genuine home. Familiar faces, consistent support and honest communication are things we take seriously every day. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in a rating of Good, which reflects the commitment of our whole staff team to maintaining thoughtful, person centred care. We do not take that rating for granted and we are always looking at how we can continue to improve. Whether someone comes to us for long term residential support or as a younger adult needing a specialist environment, we aim to ensure their time with us is spent with dignity, choice and as much independence as possible. If you are considering Romans Care Home for yourself or someone you care about, we would welcome the chance to have a conversation and show you around. Cornelius House is a residential care home in Chichester providing care for older people, along with shorter respite stays. Chichester is home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors, and a good deal of flexibility about when family can come. They can come whenever they like. Respite stays are useful when a family carer needs a break or when somebody is recovering after being unwell. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Bainbridge Court is a residential care home in Storrington, West Sussex, for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. People here have decades ahead of them, so we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less. Support is agreed with each person and built around them. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and attention to sensory demands prevent far more distress than any reaction afterwards. For residents with a physical disability, time is what matters most, and we build the day around that. Respite stays are available. Care at Stennings is a residential care home in Copthorne, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults making their first move away from the family home. We are a house with a small number of people living in it, and everything follows from that. People have their own space and their own routines, and a genuine say in how the place runs, from the weekly shop to what happens at the weekend. The people we support want different things from us. Some are out most days at work, college or with friends, and need us to make that practical and to be there when they get back. Others prefer a steady, predictable week and need staff who understand what helps them feel regulated and what makes a day harder. We take real time learning those patterns, including how somebody tells us they are struggling when they cannot say it directly. Support plans are written with the person, in language they can use, and revisited when things genuinely change. We offer respite stays as well, arranged with visits beforehand so that arriving is familiar rather than unsettling. Families and social workers stay closely involved. Here at Merriman Grange, we offer a warm and welcoming home for the people who come to live with us in the heart of Worthing, West Sussex. We believe that moving into a care home is a significant step, and we work hard to make sure everyone who walks through our doors feels genuinely at ease from the very beginning. We support a range of people with different needs and circumstances. This includes older adults, people living with dementia, younger adults who require residential support, and those who need a shorter stay through respite care. Whatever brings someone to us, we take the time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how we can best support their day to day life. Dementia care sits at the heart of much of what we do. We know that living with dementia affects not just the individual but the whole family, and we try to keep those connections strong while providing a consistent and reassuring environment for the people in our care. For those who come to us for respite, whether to give a family carer a break or to recover after a period of ill health, we aim to make the stay feel as comfortable and purposeful as possible rather than simply a pause in life elsewhere. Worthing is a town we are proud to be part of. We encourage residents to stay connected to their community and to the people and things that have always been important to them. Life here is shaped around individual routines and preferences, not the other way around. We are always happy to answer questions, arrange a visit, or simply have a conversation about whether Merriman Grange might be the right fit for you or someone you love.

Ashtonleigh is a care home in Horsham offering both residential and nursing care, which means somebody can stay with us as their needs change rather than having to move on at an already difficult moment. We care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. That range works because our method stays the same. We learn how a person communicates, what their day ought to contain and what makes a difficult day, and we build support around that rather than around a fixed routine. Having qualified nurses on site means changes in health are picked up early and managed calmly, and it often spares somebody an avoidable hospital admission. Respite stays are available too, for people recovering after illness and for family carers who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take that as a foundation. The more honest measure is whether people here look comfortable and whether relatives feel welcome at any reasonable hour. You would be very welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Westdene House is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. We are small enough for everybody here to be known properly, and that is the basis of everything else we do. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it gets acted on the same day rather than at a review in a month. Residents decide how their own days go. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others in the lounge or keep to their own room. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps most, so we keep staffing settled, learn each person's history properly and use it to make sense of what they are telling us. When somebody is distressed we look for the reason rather than trying to close it down. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

    • Care Home

We are a small residential care home on Leylands Road in Burgess Hill in West Sussex. We support adults managing mental health conditions and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. Supporting mental health in a residential setting is largely a matter of steadiness rather than intervention. We keep to arrangements we have made. We notice when somebody seems unlike themselves without turning it into an interrogation. We make it easy to talk to us without a formal appointment, and we are as reliable on the difficult weeks as on the good ones. Progress is rarely a straight line and our job is not to be surprised by that. Being a small house helps with all of it. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and the week can genuinely be arranged around the people living here. This is their home and we treat it accordingly. Rooms are theirs to arrange. People decide how their days go, who they see, whether they want company or their own space. We knock before we come in, we ask rather than assume, and we are quite prepared to be disagreed with. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.

Arranging and funding a care home place in West Sussex

Funding rarely feels pressing until a hospital discharge date appears, and by then the useful conversations are the ones that should already have happened. Any adult who appears to need care and support has the right to ask for an assessment, whatever their savings look like, and that assessment is the gateway to almost everything else.

Starting with a care needs assessment

The assessment looks at daily living: washing, dressing, medication, mobility, eating, and how safe someone is on their own overnight. It produces a written record of what support is needed and whether a residential setting is the right answer, which is worth having even for families who expect to pay privately. West Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying out that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. A carer living in the household can request a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time.

What a placement is likely to cost

Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows the care assessment and looks at income, savings and other capital. Someone whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the full fee themselves, while those below it receive help on a sliding scale. Fees differ from home to home across West Sussex, and they usually reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much one to one support a resident needs. Ask any home to set out in writing what the weekly fee covers and what is charged separately, because extras such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings are often billed on top.

Choosing between care homes in West Sussex

224 providers is a large field, and narrowing it is mostly a matter of applying filters that actually matter to the person moving in rather than trying to read every profile.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every rating on this page comes from the Care Quality Commission. Homes rated Outstanding, such as Crawford Care Home, have been judged to go beyond what inspectors expect as standard, while a Good rating means the home met every standard tested. A Requires Improvement judgement is not automatically a reason to strike a home off, but it does mean reading the report to see what was found, whether the concerns touched on safety or on record keeping, and how recently the visit took place. Homes shown as not yet rated are usually newer registrations that have not had a first full inspection, so there is less published evidence to work from and the questions you ask on a visit carry more weight.

What to look for when you visit

Visit at a time that has not been chosen for you, ideally around a mealtime, and pay attention to how staff speak to residents rather than to how the entrance hall looks. Ask how many carers are on shift overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and what the turnover of staff has been over the past year, since stable teams tend to produce steadier care. If dementia is part of the picture, ask what specific training the staff have completed and how the home supports someone who becomes distressed. Distance matters more than families expect: a home that relatives can reach easily gets visited often, and regular visitors are one of the better safeguards a resident can have.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in West Sussex

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in West Sussex?

Contact West Sussex County Council and ask adult social care for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can request it on behalf of a relative with their agreement. The assessment covers daily tasks, mobility, medication and night time safety, and results in a written record of what support is needed. If a hospital stay is involved, the ward team can refer directly to speed things up.

Can West Sussex County Council pay for a residential placement?

It can, provided the person meets both the care eligibility criteria and the financial test. West Sussex County Council carries out a financial assessment after the needs assessment, looking at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes. Those with capital above the national threshold usually fund the placement themselves, though they can still ask the council for an assessment and for advice. Where the council does contribute, it will agree a personal budget covering the assessed needs.

Which providers are included in this West Sussex listing?

This page brings together two hundred and seventeen residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in West Sussex. They are homes providing personal care and daily support rather than nursing delivered on site by registered nurses. The list spans large purpose built homes and small houses supporting a handful of people, including providers such as Walberton Place Care Home, Ashton Manor and Elizabeth House. Each profile carries the current rating and links through to the published inspection report.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home supports people with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, medication prompts and meals, with staff on hand day and night. A nursing home is registered to provide the same support plus clinical care from registered nurses on the premises, which suits people with wounds, complex medication regimes or conditions needing regular clinical oversight. Every home on this page is registered for residential care. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is worth checking whether a home can meet that need or whether a further move would follow.

How early should families begin looking at homes in West Sussex?

Earlier than most people do. Starting while the current arrangement is still holding gives you time to visit properly, compare inspection reports and put a name down where a home has a waiting list. Crisis moves, particularly those arranged around a discharge date, tend to narrow the choice to whatever has a bed free that week. Even a rough shortlist drawn up in advance makes a sudden decision far less fraught.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in West Sussex?

Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, how long the registered manager has been in post, and what staff turnover has looked like recently. Ask to see a sample weekly activity plan and a menu, and check what happens when someone declines a meal or wants to eat at a different time. Request a written breakdown of the weekly fee and a clear list of what falls outside it, along with the notice period and the policy on fee increases. Finally, ask how the home keeps families informed when something changes, and how it handles a concern or complaint.
