Care Homes in West Sussex 224 care homes · 178 rated Good by CQC

Care homes in West Sussex do not all sit at the same level of inspected quality, and the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement across this list, with a further group of homes not yet rated. Two hundred and seventeen residential care homes match the search, each one registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on the premises. Where money forms part of the question, West Sussex County Council is the body that carries out a care needs assessment and decides whether someone qualifies for funded support, so approaching the council early tends to save time later on. A rating on its own is only a summary, though, and it will not tell you how a home feels on an ordinary weekday. Open the profiles that look promising, read the full inspection report sitting behind each judgement, and let the detail in those reports shape the questions you put to a manager before anyone commits to a move.

    • Care Home

Here at Beachview, we are proud to call Middleton-on-Sea home. Nestled in the heart of this peaceful corner of West Sussex, our care home offers a warm and welcoming environment where residents feel genuinely at home from the moment they arrive. We support a wide range of people here, including older adults, younger adults, and individuals living with a learning disability, autism, or a physical disability. We also offer respite care for those who need a short break or some additional support during a particular period. Whatever brings someone through our doors, we take the time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how we can best support their everyday life. Our approach is straightforward. We listen, we get to know each person as an individual, and we work hard to make sure that care plans reflect real lives rather than just clinical needs. Residents are encouraged to maintain their independence, pursue their interests, and stay connected with family and friends. We believe that good care is built on honest relationships and genuine respect, and that shows in the way our team goes about their work each day. We are pleased to hold a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment of everyone at Beachview to maintaining high standards and continuing to improve. Living near the coast, we are fortunate to have a beautiful setting on our doorstep, and we make the most of that whenever we can. Whether it is a breath of sea air or a quieter moment in our garden, we want life at Beachview to feel enjoyable and meaningful. If you would like to find out more or come and visit us, we would love to hear from you.

    • Care Home

Greystoke Manor is a residential care home in Ferring, caring for older people in a quiet part of West Sussex near the coast. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day is spent. We support people living with dementia, and that work rests on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a hard one. Respite stays are available too, whether someone needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a proper break. Short stays are planned with the same attention as a permanent move, so nobody arrives feeling like an afterthought. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as the standard to keep rather than something to point at. The more telling measure is whether people here seem settled and whether relatives feel able to raise something early rather than saving it up. Anyone considering Greystoke Manor is welcome to visit and see for themselves.

    • Care Home

St Annes Residential Care Home is in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, offering older people a comfortable and settled place to live with support always nearby. Our ambition is a modest one and, we think, the right one: to get the ordinary things right. Good food, warm rooms, unhurried mornings and staff with the time to sit down are what actually make a home work. We help with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and equally with the parts of a day that give it value. Some residents want company, conversation and plenty going on, while others would rather have their own room and a bit of peace, and both are perfectly good ways to live here. Nobody is pushed into activities they have not chosen. Rooms are personalised, routines are kept as close to what people are used to as we can manage, and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in this part of Sussex, please come and see us on an ordinary day and ask whatever you like.

St Georges Lodge Residential Care Home is in Worthing, providing residential care for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own, and for younger adults who need residential support. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. Some people here are up early and busy, others prefer a slow start and a quiet sitting room, and both are perfectly reasonable. Meals and company matter a great deal, so we put real effort into both. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather put that in front of you ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. • Care Home

Kerwin Court is a residential care home in Horsham supporting older people, people living with a physical disability and younger adults. A good deal of our work is with people whose needs are considerable, and where the day has to be planned around the individual rather than around a standard routine. Where somebody has a physical disability, good support is mostly about practical independence and dignity, making daily life workable again rather than quietly taking tasks away from a person. We apply the same thinking to everybody here. What somebody can do for themselves, they should have the chance to do, and where they want to work towards something, we go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here look comfortable and whether families feel able to visit and ask anything at all. They are always welcome.

    • Care Home

Ellwood Place Dementia Care Home is in Crawley, West Sussex. Dementia care is not a wing of this home, it is what the whole place is built around, and we think that focus is what allows us to do it properly. What that means in practice is fairly specific. The day follows a recognisable pattern so that people are not constantly having to work out what is happening. The same familiar staff are around, because a known face does more to settle somebody than any amount of explanation. People keep their own belongings and their own habits, and we ask families early about what those habits are. Where somebody is anxious, or wants to go home, or is looking for a person who is no longer alive, we stay with them and go at their pace rather than correcting them. We also support people with physical disabilities, thinking carefully about equipment, seating and access, and we offer respite stays, which give a family carer a genuine break. Food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable and somewhere quiet, and visitors are welcome without appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us and talk to whoever is on shift.

    • Care Home

Hooklands Care Home is a residential home near Chichester, West Sussex, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with learning disabilities and autism and people with physical disabilities. Living together in one house works when difference is expected rather than tolerated. Our residents do not all want the same day. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others appear when they are ready. Some need a great deal of physical help, others need mainly a settled place and staff who know them. Running the house well means holding all of that at once without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. We plan support with each person and with the family or friends they want involved, and we adjust how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available for short periods of care or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. • Care Home

Here at Woodroffe Benton House, we provide residential and dementia care for older people in the heart of Crawley, West Sussex. We are a care home that takes our responsibilities seriously, and we work hard every day to make sure the people who live with us feel genuinely at home. We support older people across a range of needs, including residential care, dementia care and respite care for those who need a shorter stay, perhaps to recover after a hospital admission or to give a family carer some time to rest. Whatever brings someone to us, we approach every individual with the same care and attention, taking the time to understand who they are, what matters to them and how they like to live their life. Our team knows that moving into a care home is a significant moment, both for the person themselves and for their family. We try to make that transition as straightforward and as reassuring as possible, keeping communication open and honest from the very beginning. Families are always welcome, and we encourage them to stay closely involved in the life of their loved one. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the consistent effort our team puts in day after day. That said, we never see a good rating as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can improve and listening to the people in our care and their families to help shape the way we do things. If you are looking for care in the Crawley area and would like to find out whether Woodroffe Benton House could be the right fit, we would be very happy to have a conversation or arrange a visit.

Warmere Court is a care home with nursing in Arundel, West Sussex. We provide residential and nursing care for older people and younger adults, support people living with dementia, and take respite bookings for those who need a stay of a few weeks. Offering both residential and nursing care under one roof means people do not have to move on when their health needs increase, which matters enormously to those who have already settled here. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours, and our care staff work alongside them and know people well enough to notice when somebody is not their usual self. We work hard to keep this somewhere people live rather than somewhere they are treated. Rooms are people's own, filled with their own furniture and photographs. The day has a shape without being a timetable, there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and the food is meant to be looked forward to. For people living with dementia we keep surroundings calm and familiar, learn about earlier lives so conversation has somewhere to go, and train staff to work with how somebody experiences the world rather than correcting them. Families are welcome and are part of how decisions get made. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please ring if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

19 Stone Lane is a small residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Being small is rather the point, because it means the people who live here are known properly rather than approximately. Ordinary life is what we are aiming at. People are supported to cook, shop, keep their rooms exactly as they want them, get out to college, work or a club, and have a real say in how the week is arranged. For autistic residents we pay particular attention to routine, to explaining changes well in advance, and to keeping somewhere quiet available when the house feels like too much. Support is offered at whatever level suits each person. We help where help is genuinely wanted and step back where it is not, and we are as interested in what somebody can manage independently as in what they need a hand with. Respite stays are available, which can give a family a break or serve as a trial for somebody considering a move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. • Care Home

L'Arche Bethany in Bognor Regis is a residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities. We think of the house as belonging to the people who live in it, and life here is built around sharing it rather than running it for somebody. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to see family, because a home is somewhere you go out from and come back to. Support is individual and agreed with the person. Some here need a great deal of help and others very little. Communication gets particular attention, using speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply the understanding that grows from living alongside somebody over a long period. Without that, choice is a word rather than a fact. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody try the house first. • Care Home

We are a residential care home on Tushmore Lane in Crawley, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are part of what we do. We are a small household and that is the point of us. Everybody is properly known rather than known in outline, staff notice when somebody is off colour without needing it reported, and the house runs around the people in it instead of the reverse. People choose their own rooms, share properly in the shopping and the meals, and have a hand in how the place runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make it possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf, even when the quicker route is tempting on a busy morning. What we are really supporting is a life with something in it: a job, a course, a club, somewhere regular to go. Those are the purpose rather than extras attached to it. Predictability matters a great deal here, so we plan ahead and explain changes early rather than rearranging for our own convenience. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change.

Normanton Lodge is a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We care for older people who need help with daily life, and we work to keep the atmosphere of a home rather than a facility. People live here. It is not somewhere they are simply kept. Many of the people we support are living with dementia, and that shapes a great deal of how we work. We learn about the life someone has had, the work they did, the places they knew, the music and the food they still respond to, and we use that knowledge every day. A familiar routine, an unhurried approach and staff who recognise the early signs that someone is unsettled make far more difference than anything that can be listed on a brochure. Day to day we help with personal care, medication, meals and moving about safely, and we give equal thought to how someone wants their day to run. Company or quiet, an early start or a slow one, a favourite chair by the window. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a planned break while their relative is somewhere settled. Wraysbury House is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, providing a settled home for older people who need support with daily living. Our residents arrive for all sorts of reasons. For some the house had become too much to manage. For others an illness or a fall changed what was possible. Whatever the route here, our aim is that people come to think of this as their home rather than somewhere they are staying. They bring their own things, keep their own routines and decide how their days are spent, while staff look after what has become difficult, including personal care, medication, meals and laundry. A number of the people living with us have dementia, and we also support residents managing mental health conditions. In both cases the work depends on patience, familiar faces and unhurried time. Knowing what somebody did for a living, what reassures them and what unsettles them does more good than any general approach. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or someone needs support for a few weeks after being unwell. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that, and we keep asking residents and their relatives what could be better. If you would like to see Wraysbury House, please ring us and arrange a visit. You are welcome to come more than once before deciding anything.

    • Care Home

The Shelley Care Home is in Worthing, West Sussex, providing a settled home for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult. We are deliberately straightforward about what we are. This is not a nursing home and not a hospital. It is a place to live, where the parts of the day that have become hard are taken care of and the rest is still yours. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing and medication. Meals are cooked on the premises. Laundry gets done. Doctors and district nurses come in when somebody needs them. For most older people that turns out to be exactly the right level of support. It removes the worry and the effort without removing the independence, which is the balance people are usually looking for and rarely offered. Beyond that, residents run their own days. When to get up, what to eat, whether to sit with company or on your own, who visits and how often, all stay with the person. Worthing is a fine place to be, with the sea close by, and we help people get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us.

We at Spencer Place are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the historic cathedral city of Chichester, West Sussex. Our home provides a warm, welcoming environment where older people and younger adults alike can feel truly at home, supported by a dedicated team committed to dignity, comfort, and wellbeing. Nestled within the PO postcode area of Chichester, our setting benefits from the gentle pace and friendly community spirit that defines this corner of the South East. The surrounding area offers a peaceful backdrop for daily life, whilst the city itself remains close at hand for visiting family members travelling from across West Sussex and beyond. Inside, we aim to create a homely atmosphere where residents can relax, socialise, and enjoy the familiar comforts that make a house feel like home. Our specialisms reflect the diverse needs of the people we welcome through our doors. We provide residential care for older persons who require a little extra support with daily living, allowing them to maintain their independence whilst knowing that compassionate help is always nearby. For younger adults, we offer tailored support that recognises individual aspirations, routines, and lifestyles, ensuring that age never becomes a barrier to receiving care that truly fits the person. We also support residents living with mental health needs, taking the time to understand each individual's experiences and preferences so that our approach feels personal, respectful, and reassuring. In practice, this means that families can trust we look beyond a diagnosis or a care category to see the person first. Whether it is a quiet conversation over a cup of tea, encouragement to pursue a long held interest, or sensitive support during more challenging moments, our team strives to make every day feel meaningful. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we work in close partnership with relatives so that loved ones remain at the heart of every conversation about their care. We are pleased to share that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission, carried out in June 2022, awarded us a rating of Good across all five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. • Care Home

Warwick House is a residential care home in Worthing caring for older people and younger adults, including people living with mental health conditions. Our aim is a settled household where people are known properly. That takes staff who stay long enough to learn somebody's history and preferences, and care that is planned with the person rather than written about them. Help is given with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with meals and drinks, and it is given in a way that leaves privacy and dignity intact. Where somebody is living with a mental health condition, the most useful things we offer are consistency and patience. The days here are predictable, the staff are familiar, and we work closely with the professionals involved so that the approach does not change from one month to the next. A difficult period is something we work through rather than a reason to give up on an arrangement. People here have their own room and their own belongings. Meals are cooked on site with a choice, there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and visitors are welcome. Respite and short stays can be arranged. If you would like to visit, please telephone us and we will make the arrangements.

    • Care Home

Gratwick House is a residential care home in Littlehampton for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Being near the sea means getting out for some air is easy. Respite stays are available. You are welcome to visit and ask us whatever you want to know.

    • Care Home

We are The Thatched House, a residential care home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, supporting older people who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. This is somebody's home rather than a facility, and we work to keep that true in the ordinary details of the day. People bring their own furniture, pictures and belongings, and keep as much of their own routine as they wish. Some enjoy company and the busier parts of the day, others prefer their own room and quiet, and nobody is expected to join in with anything simply because it appears on a calendar. Help with washing, dressing, medication and getting about is given at the person's pace. Where somebody has a sensory impairment we adapt how we communicate rather than expecting them to adapt to us. For those living with dementia we pay close attention to familiar objects, familiar faces and a steady rhythm to the day, and we take time to learn about a person's work, family and interests so that reassurance rests on something they recognise. Being close to the coast, a trip out is an easy part of the week for those who enjoy it. We also offer respite stays. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us good overall. Relatives and friends are welcome, and we would encourage anyone considering The Thatched House to come and visit.

    • Care Home

Cornwell House is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex, for older people who need care, company and a settled place to live. We are a house rather than an institution, and we would like the people here to feel that it is theirs. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and company, calling in community health professionals whenever something more clinical is needed. We support residents living with dementia, and the things we rely on are unglamorous and effective: familiar staff, a routine that stays the same, food people recognise and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We keep an eye on the quiet signals, whether somebody is eating and sleeping properly or seems more withdrawn than usual, because those are usually the first signs that something needs looking at. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a genuine rest and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision is made. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come during an ordinary day, meet the people who live here and make up your own mind.

    • Care Home

Alexander House is a residential care home in Chichester in West Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. The people living here have genuinely little in common in terms of what they need, so we plan support one person at a time and mean it. What settles somebody with dementia is not what gives an adult with a learning disability confidence, and neither resembles what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition. Running one routine across all of that would suit nobody. So we spend our attention on particulars: how somebody likes to be addressed, what they can do themselves and would rather we left alone, what makes a difficult day and what heads it off early. Where sight or hearing loss is in the picture, habits matter more than equipment: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture where it belongs, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. Understanding how each person communicates is central, especially where speech is not the main route, and what we learn is written down so everybody responds the same way. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

Magnolia House is a residential care home in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and we support adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite stays are available as well. We are a household rather than a facility. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and a real say over how the day goes. The staff team is kept consistent, because support from people who know you well is quite different from support from whoever happens to be on shift. Changes are explained in advance, the shape of the week holds, and we take sensory comfort seriously. For people living with sight or hearing loss, communication is where most of the difference lies. We take time to learn how each person communicates and we use their way rather than expecting them to use ours, and we pay attention to how a room is arranged and whether somebody is told who has walked in. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home, and wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anybody considering Magnolia House for somebody they support are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to know.

    • Care Home

White Pearl is a residential care home in Worthing, West Sussex. We are home to older adults and to younger adults, and we support people managing mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays, which can be a planned break for a family carer or a short period of support while somebody finds their feet. Having a mix of ages under one roof shapes the place. It means we cannot run a single programme and call it activities, because what a person in their forties wants from a Tuesday afternoon is rarely what somebody forty years older wants. So we ask individually, and we accept that a good day for one resident is company and noise while for another it is being left alone with the radio. We take the ordinary business of a household seriously. Food, warmth, clean laundry, being spoken to as an adult, having a say in what happens. Where somebody can do something for themselves we support them to keep doing it, even when it would be quicker for us to step in. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We would rather be told quickly when something is not right than be praised in general terms, and we make a point of asking residents and relatives directly.

    • Care Home

Ashford House is a residential care home in Worthing supporting adults with learning disabilities and people living with mental health conditions. We treat the house as belonging to the people who live in it, and we try to behave like people who are there to help rather than people who are in charge. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to see family. Support is individual and agreed with the person. Communication gets particular attention, using speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply the understanding that grows from living alongside somebody. Where a person is managing a mental health condition, a calm and predictable household does more good than any particular intervention, and we build the week around that. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Arranging and funding a care home place in West Sussex

Funding rarely feels pressing until a hospital discharge date appears, and by then the useful conversations are the ones that should already have happened. Any adult who appears to need care and support has the right to ask for an assessment, whatever their savings look like, and that assessment is the gateway to almost everything else.

Starting with a care needs assessment

The assessment looks at daily living: washing, dressing, medication, mobility, eating, and how safe someone is on their own overnight. It produces a written record of what support is needed and whether a residential setting is the right answer, which is worth having even for families who expect to pay privately. West Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying out that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. A carer living in the household can request a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time.

What a placement is likely to cost

Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows the care assessment and looks at income, savings and other capital. Someone whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the full fee themselves, while those below it receive help on a sliding scale. Fees differ from home to home across West Sussex, and they usually reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much one to one support a resident needs. Ask any home to set out in writing what the weekly fee covers and what is charged separately, because extras such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings are often billed on top.

Choosing between care homes in West Sussex

224 providers is a large field, and narrowing it is mostly a matter of applying filters that actually matter to the person moving in rather than trying to read every profile.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every rating on this page comes from the Care Quality Commission. Homes rated Outstanding, such as Crawford Care Home, have been judged to go beyond what inspectors expect as standard, while a Good rating means the home met every standard tested. A Requires Improvement judgement is not automatically a reason to strike a home off, but it does mean reading the report to see what was found, whether the concerns touched on safety or on record keeping, and how recently the visit took place. Homes shown as not yet rated are usually newer registrations that have not had a first full inspection, so there is less published evidence to work from and the questions you ask on a visit carry more weight.

What to look for when you visit

Visit at a time that has not been chosen for you, ideally around a mealtime, and pay attention to how staff speak to residents rather than to how the entrance hall looks. Ask how many carers are on shift overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and what the turnover of staff has been over the past year, since stable teams tend to produce steadier care. If dementia is part of the picture, ask what specific training the staff have completed and how the home supports someone who becomes distressed. Distance matters more than families expect: a home that relatives can reach easily gets visited often, and regular visitors are one of the better safeguards a resident can have.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in West Sussex

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in West Sussex?

Contact West Sussex County Council and ask adult social care for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can request it on behalf of a relative with their agreement. The assessment covers daily tasks, mobility, medication and night time safety, and results in a written record of what support is needed. If a hospital stay is involved, the ward team can refer directly to speed things up.

Can West Sussex County Council pay for a residential placement?

It can, provided the person meets both the care eligibility criteria and the financial test. West Sussex County Council carries out a financial assessment after the needs assessment, looking at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes. Those with capital above the national threshold usually fund the placement themselves, though they can still ask the council for an assessment and for advice. Where the council does contribute, it will agree a personal budget covering the assessed needs.

Which providers are included in this West Sussex listing?

This page brings together two hundred and seventeen residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in West Sussex. They are homes providing personal care and daily support rather than nursing delivered on site by registered nurses. The list spans large purpose built homes and small houses supporting a handful of people, including providers such as Walberton Place Care Home, Ashton Manor and Elizabeth House. Each profile carries the current rating and links through to the published inspection report.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home supports people with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, medication prompts and meals, with staff on hand day and night. A nursing home is registered to provide the same support plus clinical care from registered nurses on the premises, which suits people with wounds, complex medication regimes or conditions needing regular clinical oversight. Every home on this page is registered for residential care. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is worth checking whether a home can meet that need or whether a further move would follow.

How early should families begin looking at homes in West Sussex?

Earlier than most people do. Starting while the current arrangement is still holding gives you time to visit properly, compare inspection reports and put a name down where a home has a waiting list. Crisis moves, particularly those arranged around a discharge date, tend to narrow the choice to whatever has a bed free that week. Even a rough shortlist drawn up in advance makes a sudden decision far less fraught.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in West Sussex?

Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, how long the registered manager has been in post, and what staff turnover has looked like recently. Ask to see a sample weekly activity plan and a menu, and check what happens when someone declines a meal or wants to eat at a different time. Request a written breakdown of the weekly fee and a clear list of what falls outside it, along with the notice period and the policy on fee increases. Finally, ask how the home keeps families informed when something changes, and how it handles a concern or complaint.
