About Strawberry Fields
Strawberry Fields is a residential care home in Littlehampton supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works from day to day. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally, including down to the sea. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Strawberry Fields. Report published 4 May 2019.
- 25 March 2019
- 10 places, 7 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found that people were kept safe and felt comfortable around staff they knew well. Risks had been identified, and assessments told staff how to manage them. There were enough staff, they had been recruited safely, and medicines were given, stored and managed safely.
Effective
Inspectors found that staff had received personalised training to meet people's needs, including support with behaviours that challenged. Staff said they felt well supported, with regular supervision and team meetings. People's nutrition and health care needs were met, and staff supported people in the least restrictive way possible.
Caring
Inspectors saw relationships between people and staff that were based on trust and respect. People's privacy, dignity and independence were promoted by staff.
Responsive
Inspectors found that people had their own activity timetables, based on their interests and preferences. People had choice and control over what they did each day, and they could choose who supported them. Staff regularly reviewed people's choices and needs.
Well-led
CQC rated this area Requires improvement. A new manager had been in post for three weeks and had not yet registered with CQC, but planned to. The service had had three managers in the last year, and the local authority had raised concerns about how this affected people and staff. Inspectors said the manager needed more time to put changes in place and make them last.
What people told the inspectors
Relatives and a professional told inspectors that staff knew people extremely well. Staff, relatives and a professional were optimistic about the new manager.
