About Us

Here at Baytrees, we provide residential care for adults with learning disabilities and autism in the heart of Littlehampton, West Sussex. We are a small, close knit community where the people who live with us are genuinely at the centre of everything we do.

We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, and we work hard to make sure that Baytrees feels like home rather than an institution. Life here is built around the individual. We take the time to get to know each person properly, learning what matters to them, what brings them joy, and what support they actually need, rather than making assumptions. That means daily life looks different for everyone here, and that is exactly how it should be.

Supporting people with learning disabilities and autism requires patience, consistency and a real willingness to listen, including to those who communicate in ways that do not rely on words alone. Our team works closely with residents and their families to understand how best to offer support that respects each person's preferences and routines.

We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good, which we feel reflects the genuine effort our team puts in every day. We do not take that rating for granted and we are always looking at where we can do better.

Littlehampton is a lovely town and we make the most of being part of the local community, encouraging residents to get out and about and take part in the things they enjoy.

If you are considering Baytrees for yourself or someone you care about, we would love to hear from you. Please do get in touch and we will be happy to have a conversation or arrange a visit.

More about the care at Baytrees

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Learning Disability / Autism

Good support in this area means building life around the person, protecting familiar routines, respecting sensory preferences and encouraging independence in small practical ways. Baytrees is registered with the CQC for learning disability and autism support and held a Good rating at its June 2022 inspection. Placements are usually arranged through West Sussex adult social care with regular reviews of the care and support plan. Ask how communication preferences and outcomes are tracked over time.

Respite Care

Families arranging a short stay at Baytrees should enquire early, as rooms for planned respite in a small home can be limited, particularly around school holidays. Most homes ask for a minimum of one or two weeks and will want current medication details, GP information and familiar clothing, toiletries and comfort items packed. A respite booking can also work as a gentle trial before considering a permanent move. Check availability, notice periods and whether the local authority can contribute.

Residential Care

Living in a residential setting like Baytrees in Littlehampton means having help on hand with the everyday things: washing and dressing, meals and drinks through the day, laundry, medication prompts and company when you want it. Unlike a nursing home, there is no registered nurse on site around the clock, so anyone needing regular clinical input would usually receive that through community NHS services instead. Activities and daily rhythm vary from home to home, and this one is registered for adults with learning disabilities and autism rather than older people. Typical weekly fees across the South East sit between £1,100 and £1,450, while West Sussex County Council usually funds placements at around £800 to £950. It is worth asking directly what is included in the fee and what counts as an extra.

Questions families ask about Baytrees

Answered from the CQC register where we can. 6 of these the home has not told us yet, so ask when you call.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

No. Baytrees is not listed for dementia care on the CQC register. If dementia is likely, choose a home that is, so a second move is not needed later. Source: CQC register

Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?

No. Baytrees is a residential care home without on-site nursing. District nurses and GPs visit, but someone who needs daily nursing may have to move to a nursing home. Source: CQC register

Can they try a short stay before deciding?

Yes. Baytrees offers respite and short stays, which is a good way to see whether the home is the right fit. Source: CQC register

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.

Can she bring her cat or dog?

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Can a couple stay together?

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.

Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Do they take younger adults as well as older people?

Ask the home. The register does not say which age groups the home supports. Ask the home.

Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?

Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
