Care Homes in Essex 316 care homes · 249 rated Good by CQC

Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

    • Care Home

We at Carers Choices are proud to offer a welcoming residential care home in Benfleet, Essex, where individuals with a range of needs can feel truly at home. Our focus on personalised residential care means every person who lives with us is supported to live life on their own terms, in surroundings designed to feel comfortable, familiar and safe. Nestled within the SS postcode area of Benfleet, our home benefits from its position in a friendly Essex community, offering residents the reassurance of a peaceful setting whilst remaining well connected to local amenities, green spaces and the wider region. The environment has been thoughtfully arranged to feel more like a home than an institution, with communal areas where residents can spend time together and quiet spaces for relaxation, reflection or visits from loved ones. Our specialisms extend beyond general residential care to include support for adults with learning disabilities and autism, as well as those living with mental health needs. In practice, this means our approach is genuinely person centred. We take time to understand each resident as an individual, learning about their history, preferences, routines and aspirations, so that the support we provide fits around them rather than the other way around. For adults with learning disabilities or autism, this can mean structured routines, sensory considerations and encouragement to build independence in ways that feel achievable and empowering. For those living with mental health conditions, it means a calm, consistent environment where wellbeing is nurtured with compassion and patience. We also offer respite care, providing short stays for those who need temporary support or for family carers who need a well earned break. Families can take comfort in knowing their loved one is receiving the same warm, attentive care during a respite stay as our permanent residents enjoy every day. This flexibility often proves invaluable to families navigating change, recovery periods or planning longer term care arrangements. The Care Quality Commission has rated Carers Choices as Good overall, with Good ratings across every one of the five key areas assessed: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well led. This consistency reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering care that is not only kind and considerate, but also safe, well managed and responsive to the changing needs of the people we support. For families weighing up options, a Good rating across the board offers meaningful reassurance that the fundamentals of quality care are firmly in place. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that responsibility. If you are exploring residential or respite care in Benfleet for a loved one with a learning disability, autism or mental health support needs, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about our approach and help you decide whether Carers Choices could be the right home for the person you love.

We are Okeley Care Home in Chelmsford, Essex. We provide both residential and nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite admissions for shorter stays. Because we offer residential and nursing care together, people do not have to move on when their health needs increase. Families are often anxious about exactly that, and it is why we work at keeping our nursing team stable rather than relying on a constant stream of agency cover. Nursing settings can easily feel clinical, so we push against it. People get up when they want, eat what they like, sit where they choose and keep their own furniture, pictures and habits. We ask about the details of a life, the work someone did, the garden they kept, the hour they prefer to be left in peace, and we write those things into how we work so they survive a change of shift. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail: knowing a person's history, recognising early what unsettles them, going at their pace rather than the timetable's. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

    • Care Home

Crouched Friars is a residential care home in Colchester providing care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia. People come to us at different points. Some have managed at home for years with increasing difficulty, others arrive suddenly after a fall or a spell in hospital. Either way the early weeks matter, and we spend them learning about the person, their family and their habits, because that is what allows us to offer care that fits rather than care in general. Staff help with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with eating and drinking well, and they do it at the pace of the person. For those living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings familiar, adjust how we communicate rather than expecting the person to adjust to us, and treat distress as something to be understood. The home is somewhere people live. Rooms are personalised, meals are cooked here with a genuine choice, there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and visitors are welcome. Respite and short stays can be arranged. If you would like to look round, please telephone us and we will arrange a time.

    • Care Home

Primecare is a residential care home in Basildon for older people, including those living with dementia and residents with sight or hearing loss, and we also support some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing the people who live here as individuals. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become difficult, and we leave people in charge of the rest. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom to manage. Where somebody has sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate, say who we are as we come into a room and take care not to move things without mentioning it. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out. Respite stays are available. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round.

Southborough Care Home is a residential care home in Chelmsford, Essex. We support older people, including those living with dementia, and younger adults, among them people with a learning disability and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays. We would rather be straightforward with you from the outset. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. That was not comfortable reading and we have treated it seriously. The work since has gone into the basics that residents actually feel, which are safe medication practice, keeping staffing consistent so people are looked after by a team that knows them, and making sure that when a resident or a relative raises something it gets to a manager and gets answered properly. The rest of what we do has not changed. People here decide how their own day runs, when to get up, what to eat, whether they want company or quiet. Rooms are furnished with people's own belongings. Personal care is given with dignity and at the person's pace. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work, so we keep our team settled and learn each person's history rather than just their care needs. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and we contact families early when something changes. Please come and visit, ask us about the inspection directly and judge the home as it is now.

We are Acorn Lodge Care Home in Braintree, Essex. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are available. We aim for something domestic rather than institutional. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own habits, and decide for themselves how their day runs. What time you wake, where you eat, whether you want company or would rather sit quietly: those are your decisions and they stay that way. For people living with dementia we work with the person as they are now. Knowing their history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and having the patience to go at their pace prevents a lot of distress before it begins. Where we support somebody with a learning disability or an autistic person, we plan individually rather than by category. How a person prefers to be given information, what unsettles them and what a good week looks like to them are the basis of the plan, not an afterthought. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would always rather hear a concern early. Rectory Lodge is a residential care home in Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Supporting people with such different needs under one roof only works if nobody is treated as a category. We take each person as they come, learn how they want their day to go and build support around that. Some residents want a lot of company and occupation. Others want quiet and predictability. There is room here for both. The building is arranged so that people with reduced mobility can get about safely and independently, and our staff are trained in moving and handling and in supporting people who communicate differently. Where somebody uses signing, pictures or objects we learn their way rather than expecting them to learn ours. For autistic residents we keep routines stable and flag change well in advance. Supporting mental health needs means patience, consistency and working alongside community teams and GPs rather than separately from them. We involve families and advocates as much as each person wants, hold regular residents meetings and act on what is raised. If something is not working we would far rather be told early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round and talk to the people who live here.

Heron Court is a residential care home in Brentwood, Essex, providing a home for older people who need support with daily living. We also care for younger adults, support residents living with dementia, and look after people with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available for those needing care for a shorter period. We want this to feel like somewhere people live rather than somewhere people are placed. Residents choose when to get up, how to spend their time, what they eat and how sociable they want to be. Meals are cooked on the premises and we pay attention to what people actually enjoy. There is company and activity for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Our dementia care is built on knowing people properly. We ask families about a person's work, family, music and habits, because reassurance works far better when it is familiar, and we keep the pace unhurried. For residents with a sensory impairment we make sure conversation and information genuinely reach them. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses so that health changes are picked up early, and we keep relatives properly informed. Families are welcome at any reasonable time. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. Where we support somebody with a mental health condition, our approach is deliberately ordinary rather than clinical. We take time to understand what a good week looks like for a person and what tends to knock things off course, and we build support around that rather than around a fixed routine. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Whiteheather is a residential care home in Weeley, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. It is a home rather than somewhere people have been referred into, and the household is built around the people who live in it. Support here is individual and practical. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the things that make a week worth having: seeing people, going out, keeping up an interest, being useful, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and a routine that can be relied upon matters greatly to most of those we support. We give people the time to do things themselves even when stepping in would be faster, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back steadily as their confidence grows. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody get used to the house before anything permanent is decided. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the place actually runs rather than relying on what we say about ourselves.

Mountfitchet House is in Stansted, Essex. We provide both residential and nursing care, which means we can look after people who mainly need help with daily life and people whose health needs call for a registered nurse on duty at any hour, without somebody having to move on when their needs change. We support older people, people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and younger adults. Nursing cover allows us to manage complex medication, skin and pressure care, continence and nutrition, and to watch health closely enough that changes are caught early. Where somebody is nearing the end of their life, it means comfort and familiar faces rather than a move somewhere unfamiliar. The clinical side is only part of the job, though. A home like this can drift into being a place where everything is done to people and almost nothing is chosen by them, and we work against that. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who visits. For people living with dementia we keep the day in a familiar order and the staff group as steady as we can. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring to arrange a visit.

Waters View is a residential care home in Harwich. We support older people and younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. With that range of needs the only sensible approach is to build round individuals. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage perfectly well themselves and where help would be welcome. That becomes the plan and it is theirs to change. Help with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and health appointments is given as the person has asked and recorded carefully, so that it happens the same way whoever is on shift. We give proper thought to rooms and equipment, since independence often turns on whether something is within reach. Where there is sensory loss we attend to lighting, contrast, clear signs and hearing aids that work, which decide whether somebody is in a conversation or at one remove from it. With dementia we rely on knowing a person well, so we gather their history with their family and keep adding to it. Meals are cooked here with real choice. Families are welcome whenever suits them, and we would rather be honest early, including when something has gone wrong. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home at Hatfield Peverel supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who need help with daily living. The house is run as a household rather than a service. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping is done, who wants to go out and where to. For adults who have often had decisions made on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is much of the point. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do. For some that means a job, a college course or a regular volunteering day. For others it is getting out regularly, keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff, or learning to do more around the house. Where people have grown older here, needs change and we change with them, adding help with personal care, mobility and health appointments rather than suggesting a move. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

    • Care Home

We provide residential care at Walton on the Naze for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Being near the coast has its uses, and getting out for a walk or a change of view is part of ordinary life here when the weather allows. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would far rather hear about a problem early than find out late. Please come and see the home for yourself.

Stanway Green Lodge is a residential care home in Colchester. We care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia, those living with mental health conditions, those with a physical disability and those whose sight or hearing is impaired. Our care is the practical, daily kind: help to wash and dress, medication given properly, meals cooked here, support to move about safely and staff available through the night. Around that, residents arrange their own time as they wish, and we try not to organise people's lives on their behalf. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings exactly where they are expected and check that we have been understood. For people living with mental health conditions, consistency and staff who stay steady when things are difficult count for a great deal. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. • Care Home

Bruntsfield House is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with visual or hearing impairment. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We support a genuinely mixed group of people, and we plan for each of them separately rather than running one day that everybody has to fit into. For one resident a good day is calm, quiet and highly predictable, with plenty of warning before anything changes. For another it is a busy week out in the local area, seeing family and keeping up interests. Both are proper lives and both take thought to support well. Practical help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility is part of it, but we try to give only as much as is wanted. Independence is easy to erode by being helpful, and we watch for that. For residents living with dementia, and for autistic residents, we pay particular attention to environment, familiarity and consistency of staffing, because those details decide how a day goes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Bruntsfield House for yourself or someone close to you, please come and see it. We would rather you visited than took our word for anything.

We are Rascasse, a residential home in Witham, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who want a short break or whose families need one. This is a home rather than a placement. People choose how their rooms look, what they eat, when they go out and who they see. We support people to keep up with family and friends, to get to college, work or volunteering, to use local services and transport, and to take on more of their own daily life where they want to. Some of that means teaching skills patiently over months, and some of it means standing back and letting somebody manage. Knowing people well is the whole basis of good support here. We learn how each person communicates, what tends to unsettle them, what helps them recover when a day goes wrong, and we make sure new staff understand all of it before they support anyone alone. We keep our team as consistent as we can, because unfamiliar faces make everything harder. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We use it as a reference point and keep questioning our own practice. If you are looking at supported living or residential care in Essex, please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the house actually runs.

Cameron House is a residential care home in Basildon, Essex, caring for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather put that at the front than have somebody discover it later. It is not the rating we want and we are not going to explain it away. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff, the people who live here and their families, and anybody considering a move is entitled to ask exactly what is changing, who is accountable for it and what evidence there is that it is taking hold. The life of the home carries on meanwhile and it matters to the people in it. That means support with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility given in a way that protects dignity, and for residents living with dementia it means staff who know somebody's history well enough to understand what a particular anxiety is really about. Respite stays are available. We would encourage families to visit and judge our progress directly.

We are a residential care home in Braintree, Essex, supporting older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability or autism, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a period rather than permanently. Supporting people across a range of ages and needs only works if you start from the individual. For some of the people who live here what is needed is largely practical, help with personal care, medication, meals and moving about. For others it is something different. A day that runs to a predictable shape. Notice before anything changes. Staff who understand that a particular routine is not a preference but the thing that holds the day together. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, the way we approach someone, announce ourselves, arrange a room and allow time for a reply makes the difference between somebody feeling included and somebody feeling shut out. We expect our staff to make those adjustments as a matter of habit. Where a person can do something for themselves, we would far rather they did, even when it takes longer and is less tidy. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome and we would always encourage you to come and see the place. Please get in touch and we will arrange a time that suits you and your family.

    • Care Home

Myland House is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We look after older people who need support with daily living, along with younger adults whose needs make living independently difficult, including people with physical disabilities. Our aim is an ordinary, settled household. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, decide how they spend the day and see visitors when they choose. There is company for anyone who wants it and somewhere quiet for anyone who does not, and meals are planned around what people actually enjoy eating. Support is planned with the person. We look at what somebody can manage themselves, what has become difficult and what they want help with, and we are careful that helping does not turn into taking over. Where someone wants to keep doing something for themselves, that is usually worth far more than the time it would save us to do it for them. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether to give a family carer a planned break or to support somebody while they regain confidence after illness. We keep relatives closely involved, because they want to be and because what they know about the person is more useful than any assessment form. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and see us and ask us whatever you need to ask.

We are Butterfly's Care Home in Walton On The Naze, Essex. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults. Respite stays are available. We plan around individuals rather than around a single routine. The people living here have quite different notions of a good week. Some want to be busy, with work, college, sport or regular groups and plenty of getting out along the coast. Others want quiet and a rhythm they can rely on, and where change is unsettling we keep things steady and prepare carefully for anything unusual. Because we also support people with physical disabilities, a good deal of our attention goes on access, equipment and the practical business of getting about. Where those needs are met properly and without fuss, they stop shaping somebody's day. We are careful about independence too. If somebody can do a thing themselves, more slowly than we could do it for them, that is their time and their decision, and we work at their pace rather than ours. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

We are Clayburn Lodge, a residential care home in Basildon. We support adults living with mental health conditions, and we also offer respite stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that and also clear about what it means. It is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong here. It reflects the fact that we know the people who live here well, that our staff are properly supported, and that when something needs putting right we deal with it rather than explaining it away. Much of what we do is about structure without rigidity. For a lot of the people who live here, a predictable day, a decent meal, a proper night's sleep, medication that is right and taken, and somebody who notices how you are doing make the difference between coping and struggling. Equally, this is a home and not a treatment programme. People come and go, see their families, keep up their own interests and decide how they spend the day. Where somebody wants to work towards living more independently, we support that. Please contact us if you would like to visit. Ask us awkward questions and we will answer them.

Grammar School House is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, including many younger adults. We provide permanent places and planned respite stays. We run a house where people live rather than a unit where people are placed. Residents have their own rooms, a genuine say in how the household works and support planned with them instead of written about them. Our staff are here to help people do things for themselves wherever that is possible, and we look for ways to build confidence rather than quietly taking tasks over. Environment matters more than people expect. Noise, lighting, predictability and knowing what is coming next often decide whether someone is settled or permanently braced for something. For residents with physical disabilities, we plan and equip so that mobility limits do not shrink a person's world, and getting out of the building regularly is part of that. Where a person signs, uses symbols or an app, or communicates through behaviour we have learned to read, the responsibility for understanding sits with us and not with them. We also support people to keep up college, work, volunteering, friendships and family contact, because a placement should never quietly become someone's whole world. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Longcroft Residential Care Home is in Wickford, Essex. We are a residential home for adults with mental health needs, including younger adults and people affected by alcohol or drug misuse, and we offer respite stays alongside longer placements. We are a house rather than a unit, and we work hard to keep that distinction real. People here have their own rooms and their own routines, and a genuine say in how the household runs, from meals to the shape of the week. For many people arriving with us, having somewhere settled and unhurried to be is itself most of what helps. What we provide is stability and attention. Support with medication and appointments, help with the practical parts of the day, and staff who are around, familiar and quick to notice when somebody is finding things harder than usual. Beyond that we take our lead from the person. People come to us at very different points, and progress does not run to a common timetable. We work alongside community mental health teams, social workers, GPs and families, and where someone is working towards more independent living we support that in practical steps: cooking, budgeting, travel and managing a tenancy. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Longcroft for yourself or someone you are supporting, please get in touch and come and see the place for yourself.

Here at Bradbury House, we offer residential care for a range of people across our home in Braintree, Essex. We support older adults, younger adults, and those living with dementia, and we also provide respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is planned or at short notice. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can face. It can feel overwhelming, and we try to make that process as straightforward and as honest as possible. From the first phone call or visit, we want people to get a genuine feel for who we are and how we work, rather than a polished performance put on for the occasion. Life at Bradbury House is built around the individual. We take time to understand each person's history, preferences, and routines, because good care cannot be delivered in a one size fits all way. For residents living with dementia, this is especially important. Familiarity, consistency, and calm matter enormously, and we work hard to provide an environment where people feel safe and recognised as themselves. Our team genuinely know the people they care for. Relationships build naturally over time, and that continuity makes a real difference to the wellbeing of residents and to the reassurance of their families. We encourage families to stay closely involved and to feel welcome whenever they visit. We are based in Braintree, which means we are part of the local community rather than removed from it. We value that connection and look for ways to keep residents engaged with the wider world around them where that is something they enjoy. If you would like to find out more or arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you.

Here at Boucherne, we offer residential care for older people in the heart of Maldon, Essex. We are proud to have received a "good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our whole team puts into making this a place where residents feel truly at home. We specialise in older person care, residential care, and respite care. Whether someone is joining us on a longer term basis or coming to stay for a short break while their usual carer takes some time out, we aim to make every resident feel comfortable, respected, and properly looked after from the moment they arrive. Maldon is a lovely part of Essex, and we think the town's unhurried, community minded character suits the kind of care we try to provide. We are not a place that rushes through the day. We take time to get to know each person, understand what matters to them, and build daily life around their preferences rather than fitting them into a rigid routine. Respite care is something we take particularly seriously. We know that for family members and carers, handing over responsibility even temporarily can feel daunting. We do our best to keep communication open and make sure everyone involved feels informed and reassured throughout a stay. Our team works hard to maintain a calm, friendly atmosphere where residents feel they have genuine choice and dignity in their day to day lives. We listen, we adapt, and we are always looking at how we can do things better. If you are considering care for yourself or someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to get in touch or come and visit. Seeing Boucherne for yourself is always the best way to get a feel for whether it might be the right fit.

Care Givers is a residential care home in Colchester, supporting adults and younger adults who have a learning disability, who are autistic, or who live with mental health conditions. The people who live here are adults with their own preferences and plans, and we run the home on that understanding. Residents have a real say in how the house works, what we eat, how their support is given and what they do with their time. Our role is to make the life someone wants practical, not to decide it for them. Support plans are written with each person, in a form they can take part in, and revisited as things change. We pay attention to how each individual communicates and what helps them when things become difficult, because knowing that in advance is worth far more than reacting afterwards. Familiar staff, a predictable routine and respect for sensory needs matter enormously here. We encourage people to keep hold of ordinary life, whether that is family and friends, college or work, a club, or simply going into Colchester and choosing how to spend an afternoon. Where someone wants to build a skill, we support the practice and step back when we can. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a break or provide stability at a difficult time.

Help with washing and dressing is given calmly, because dignity is largely a matter of pace and manner. Dementia care asks for patience rather than correction. When a resident is anxious, or looking for a person or place from an earlier part of their life, we respond to the feeling instead of arguing with the facts, and we work out what will genuinely settle them. Knowing a person's history is central to that, so we gather it early from the people who know them best. Families are welcome throughout the day, and we would much rather hear about a worry early than late. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

The Oaks Residential Care Home in Colchester supports older people, including residents living with dementia, residents managing mental health conditions and residents with a visual or hearing impairment. We aim to be a comfortable, steady sort of place where staff and residents know one another properly. The day is not run to a rigid timetable. People get up when they are ready, eat food cooked here that is worth looking forward to, and spend their time in company or quietly as they prefer. Where someone has a sensory impairment we pay attention to the details that make the difference. Saying who we are as we come into the room, explaining what is about to happen before we help, keeping belongings where they were left, and making sure nobody is left out of what is going on around them. For residents living with dementia we keep routines familiar and our approach unhurried, and we spend real time learning a person's earlier life, because that is usually what allows us to settle someone who is anxious. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would far rather hear a concern from you early than discover it late. We also offer respite stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Oakley House is a residential care home in Harwich in Essex. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Much of what we do is about widening what is possible rather than occupying the day. Cooking something you actually want. Getting confident with money. Managing a journey into town alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Progress can be slow and can go backwards, and our part is to keep the chance open without pressure. Supporting mental health here is mostly about not wobbling. We keep to what we have agreed, we notice when somebody is not themselves, and we make it easy to talk without a formal arrangement. Where community teams are involved we work with them properly rather than alongside them. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection.

At Haven Lodge, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Clacton on Sea, Essex. We are a care home that genuinely knows our residents, and we take time to understand each person as an individual rather than simply as someone who needs support. Our team works with people living with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health needs, as well as offering respite care for those who need a short break from their usual living arrangements, or whose families need some time to rest. Whether someone comes to us for a longer stay or a shorter period of support, we aim to make sure they feel comfortable, respected, and at home. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the honest, consistent work our staff carry out every day. It means a great deal to us, though we always look at how we can keep improving and listening to the people who live here. Clacton on Sea is a place with a lot of character, and being part of this community matters to us. Residents are encouraged to stay connected with local life in whatever way suits them, whether that is getting out and about or simply enjoying what the area has to offer closer to home. What we try to do at Haven Lodge is straightforward. We want people to feel safe, to have a say in how they live their lives, and to be treated with real dignity day to day. Families can be confident that their loved ones are genuinely known and looked after here, not just cared for in a general sense. We are always happy to speak with anyone who wants to find out more about what we offer or whether Haven Lodge might be the right fit for someone they care about.

Here at Ashview, we are proud to be a care home based in Vange, Basildon, in the heart of Essex. We support adults with a range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and those who require residential or respite care. Whether someone is joining us for a short break or making Ashview their long term home, we want every person who walks through our doors to feel genuinely welcome and at ease from day one. We know that choosing a care home, for yourself or for someone you love, is not a decision taken lightly. That is why we focus on getting to know each resident as an individual, understanding their routines, preferences, and what matters most to them in everyday life. Care that works for one person may not suit another, and we take that seriously. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels homely rather than clinical. We want residents to feel a real sense of belonging here, not as though they are simply being looked after, but as though they are truly part of the Ashview community. Families are always welcome, and we encourage open, honest communication so that everyone feels informed and involved. We are pleased to have received a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment of our whole team to providing care that is safe, responsive, and centred on the people we support. We do not take that rating for granted and we continue to look at how we can improve and grow. • Care Home

Wickham Care Home is a residential care home in Chelmsford, Essex. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, and younger adults who need residential care. We also offer respite stays. We will put the inspection first, because you should not have to hunt for it. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement at our most recent inspection. We did not dispute the findings. The work since has concentrated on what residents and families actually notice, which is safe and accurate medication practice, consistent staffing so people are cared for by a team that knows them, and making sure a concern raised by a resident or a relative reaches a manager and gets a proper answer. Otherwise the home runs around the people in it. Residents choose when to get up, what to eat and how they spend their time, and rooms hold their own furniture and photographs. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staffing settled, and we take trouble to understand what lies behind distress rather than managing the surface of it. Health needs are dealt with alongside local GPs and community nurses, and we contact families early when something changes. Please come and visit, ask us about the inspection directly and judge the home as it is now rather than as it was.

    • Care Home

Butterfly's Care Home is a residential home in Colchester, Essex. The people living here are a mixed group, which is something we are glad about. We support older people and younger adults, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with a physical disability. A home with that range in it feels more like a community and less like a waiting room, though it does mean the support has to be genuinely tailored. We start with the person rather than the category. What can you do for yourself, what would you like help with, what makes a day go badly, how do you tell us when something is wrong. Those answers shape the support plan, and we write it with the person in words they can use. For autistic residents that usually means predictable routines and attention to sensory needs. For someone with a mental health condition it often means staff who know them well enough to spot an early change. Respite stays are part of what we offer, and we arrange a visit first wherever we can so that arriving is not a shock. Relatives and social workers are welcome and involved. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and the judgement that matters more to us is the one the residents would give.

Glendale Residential Care Home is in Dunmow, Essex, and we provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We try to run a house rather than an institution, and the difference lies mostly in small decisions. People get up when they are ready. Meals are unhurried and worth turning up for. Someone who wants their own company can have it without being coaxed into the lounge. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects dignity, which usually comes down to asking first, explaining what we are doing and never taking over a task a person can still manage. Dementia care is a significant part of our work, and the most useful knowledge almost always comes from families. What someone did for a living, who they are thinking of when the late afternoon becomes unsettled, what music helps. We ask for that, write it down and pass it between shifts. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please do come and look round.

Spring Lodge is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, and we welcome people for respite stays, whether to recover after a spell in hospital or to give a family carer a proper break. We are small enough for everybody here to be known properly, and that is the basis of everything else we do. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it is dealt with the same day rather than at a review in a month. Residents decide how their own days go. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others in the lounge or keep to their own room. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. We are careful not to take over the things people can still manage for themselves, because independence lost is hard to win back. Being near the sea helps too, with walks, fresh air and family visiting for the day. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

Shaftesbury Keefield is a residential care home in Harlow, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults moving into adult life. This is a home rather than a placement, and we try hard to keep that distinction real. Everyone here has their own routines, tastes, friendships and ambitions, so the week is built around the people who live here rather than around a rota. Support might mean help with personal care, medication and health appointments, a hand with cooking, shopping, laundry and money, or someone alongside for a bus journey, a college course, a job or a visit to family. We take time to learn how each person tells us what they want and what they do not, including those who use few or no words, so that choices genuinely belong to them. For younger adults there is often a lot to work out at once, from independence and money to relationships, work and study. We take that seriously and we work alongside families and other professionals rather than around them. Respite stays are available as well, which can give a family a planned break and give the person staying a change of scene and a taste of more independence. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. What matters more is whether the people here are getting the life they want, which we review with them regularly. Please come and visit if you would like to see the house and meet us.

    • Care Home

Blackthorns is a residential care home in Halstead, Essex. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. What we offer is residential rather than nursing care. Staff are on duty day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many people this is exactly the right level of support, and it takes far less from their independence than a clinical setting would. Dementia care here rests on consistency and on knowing the person. The same faces, a day that runs in a familiar order and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more reliably than anything else we could do. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what makes sense of things when words start to go. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw, and withdrawal is easily mistaken for decline. Respite and short stays are available. Please get in touch if you would like to visit Blackthorns.

We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also provide respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is planned or at short notice. We know that choosing a care home is one of the biggest decisions a person or family will ever make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone gets in touch with us, we try to make the process as straightforward and as human as possible. We take time to understand what matters to each person, not just their care needs on paper, but what their days look like, what they enjoy, and how they like things done. Life at Poplars is built around the people who live here. We work hard to make sure that routines feel familiar, that people have genuine choice in their daily lives, and that there is always someone around who knows them well. Our team works closely together and gets to know residents properly over time, which makes a real difference to the quality of care we can offer. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the work our team puts in day to day. We do not rest on that, though. We are always looking at how we can do things better and making sure our standards hold up consistently, not just when someone is watching. If you are considering Poplars for yourself or someone you care about, we would genuinely welcome the chance to have a conversation and show you around.

Glenroyd House is a residential care home in Basildon, Essex, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. This is a home rather than a placement, and the people who live here set the shape of the week. Rooms are personal and arranged as each person chooses. Cooking, the weekly shop and looking after the house are ordinary shared jobs rather than activities we invent to fill a timetable. Some of the people here have work, college or volunteering they want to keep up, others have firm favourites for days out, and some prefer quieter weeks with familiar company. Communication is where good support begins. Where someone uses speech, signs, symbols, technology or behaviour to tell us what they need, we learn their way of doing it and record it clearly so that every colleague understands rather than guesses. Where change is difficult we prepare properly and give plenty of notice. Where a risk exists we think it through with the person instead of saying no by default. We work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues, and we will speak up when we think someone is not getting what they are entitled to. You are very welcome to visit before deciding anything. Please contact us and we will arrange a time.

Our care approach is broad and inclusive, reflecting the diverse needs of the people we support. We provide dedicated residential care for older people, alongside specialist support for adults living with learning disabilities and autism, mental health conditions, and younger adults with a range of individual needs. We also welcome respite stays, offering families reassurance and a well earned break in the knowledge that their loved one is being cared for with warmth and professionalism. In practice, this means each resident receives a personalised plan of support built around their preferences, routines, and goals, whether that involves gentle daily companionship, structured support for independent living skills, or focused mental health care delivered with patience and understanding. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make. That is why we place open communication, kindness, and consistency at the heart of everything we do, working closely with families to ensure everyone feels informed, involved, and valued. Hilton House has been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, achieving a Good rating across all five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led. This independent recognition, following our inspection in February 2020, reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering care that is not only safe and effective but genuinely warm and responsive to the individuals who call our home theirs. If you are exploring care options for a loved one in Colchester or the wider Essex area, we would be delighted to hear from you. Marsh House is a residential care home in Colchester. We support adults who need care and a settled place to live, and we try to run the house as a home rather than an institution. The people who live with us are a mixed group, and we like that. We support older people who need residential care, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and people living with mental health conditions. We also support younger adults, whose needs and expectations are often very different from those of someone in later life. Because of that mix, we do not run a single routine that everybody fits into. We work out what each person wants their week to look like and build the support around it. Respite stays are part of what we do as well. If someone normally lives at home with family, a short stay here can give a carer the chance to rest without worrying, and we make a point of settling people in properly even when they are only with us for a week or two. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We are pleased with it and we are also clear that a rating describes a moment in time, so we keep checking our own work rather than resting on it. If you are looking for a place for yourself or someone in your family, come and visit. Seeing the house and meeting the people in it tells you far more than any description can.

Stronvar Rest Home is a residential care home in Colchester. We look after older people who have found that managing alone has become more of a struggle than a pleasure, including many people living with dementia. We try to keep life here ordinary. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and spend the day as they choose, in company or quietly with a newspaper. Good dementia care is mostly unremarkable in the doing of it, familiar faces, meals at expected times, routines that hold from one day to the next, and staff with enough time to let a conversation take as long as it takes. We would rather shape our day around a person than ask a person to fall in with ours. We also offer respite stays, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support somebody through a period of recovery after illness or hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. It matters to us, though the better test is whether somebody seems settled and content after a few weeks here, and that is the question we keep putting to ourselves. If you are looking for a home for yourself or someone close to you, please come and see us. Call in on a normal day, meet the people who live here and ask us anything you want to know.

    • Care Home

We are Evelyn May House, a residential care home in Basildon. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, how sociable you feel today: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, and where access or communication need proper attention they get it. If you are considering us for someone, please come and see the home and ask about the rating directly. We will answer fully rather than reassuringly.

    • Care Home

Tallis House is a residential care home in Waltham Abbey, Essex, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather put that at the front than have somebody discover it elsewhere. It is not the rating we want and we are not going to explain it away. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff, the people who live here and their families, and anybody considering a move is entitled to ask exactly what is changing, who is accountable for it and what evidence there is that it is taking effect.

    • Care Home

We are Magdalen Close, a residential care home in Clacton on Sea. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with dementia, and people with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment. The people who live here have very different needs, so we plan around the individual rather than running one routine for everybody. Some people want a full and busy day out in the community. Others want a quiet, predictable rhythm at home with a familiar face nearby. Both are entirely reasonable ways to live, and our job is to make either of them work well. We put a lot of weight on knowing people properly. That means understanding how somebody communicates, what unsettles them, what they enjoy and what their life was like before they came to us. New staff spend time learning this from the people who know it best, including families, before they are expected to work alone. Support plans are written with the person, not about them, and they get reviewed when something changes rather than only at set intervals. We work closely with social workers, GPs, community teams and families, and we keep relatives properly informed. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places, which gives family carers a break and gives people a chance to get to know us first. Please contact us if you would like to arrange a visit.

    • Care Home

Mason Way is a residential care home in Waltham Abbey, Essex, and the people who live here are a varied group. Older people who need help with daily living. Adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. Adults living with mental ill health. People with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Younger adults. Respite stays are available too. We are a household rather than a facility, and supporting a mix of people well depends on treating each of them as an individual rather than as a category. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some people here need a great deal of hands on help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want a settled place to live, company when they choose it, and a house that holds together through a difficult week. For autistic people, predictability is a need rather than a preference, so we explain changes in advance, keep staffing consistent where we can, and take noise, light and busyness seriously. For residents with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. Wherever possible we do things alongside people rather than for them, because a skill used is a skill kept. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to know.

Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940.Not published separately£1,870 to £2,100

Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex

Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.

Setting your criteria before you look

Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.

Getting value from a visit

Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.

Choosing between care homes in Essex

Requesting a care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.

How Essex County Council supports funded places

Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.

Understanding weekly fees

Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex

Which providers offer residential care in Essex?

Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?

Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.

Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?

It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.

How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?

Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
