Care Homes in Essex 316 care homes · 249 rated Good by CQC

Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

    • Care Home

Millwrights is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including older people and younger adults. We also offer respite stays for those who need support for a shorter period or whose usual carer needs a break. The people who live here are adults with their own preferences, opinions and plans, and our job is to support those rather than to manage them. Residents decide how their days go, what they eat, how their rooms look and what they want to work towards. Some are building skills around cooking, budgeting, travel or employment. Others want support to keep doing the things they already enjoy and to stay close to family and friends. Support plans are written with each person, using whatever way of communicating works best for them. We pay careful attention to what helps someone feel settled and what causes them stress, and we shape routines and surroundings around that instead of expecting people to adapt to us. As residents get older their needs change, and we plan for that openly with them and the people who matter to them. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We say that plainly and are happy to answer any question about how we work. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, younger adults, people with learning disabilities or autism, those living with mental health conditions, and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite care, which gives family carers a well earned break while knowing their loved one is in safe, attentive hands. Our team takes time to get to know each person properly. We want to understand not just their care needs but their routines, preferences, histories and the things that bring them joy. That understanding shapes how we support people day to day, because good care looks different for everyone and a one size fits all approach simply does not work here. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good. That outcome reflects the consistent effort our staff put in and the trust that residents and their families place in us, and it is something we work to maintain rather than take for granted. Families are always welcome to visit, ask questions and stay involved in the lives of their relatives. We see that connection as genuinely important, not just a courtesy. • Care Home

Acorn House in Laindon, Essex, is a residential care home for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. We are a house rather than an institution, and being small is the point. Staff get to know the people they support properly, which is worth more than any written plan, and the household runs around the people living in it instead of around a rota. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. So we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Where somebody is having a hard time, we look first at what is being asked of them. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Here at Moulsham Home, we provide residential care for a wide range of people in the heart of Chelmsford, Essex. We support older adults, younger adults, people living with dementia, those with learning disabilities or autism, and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite care for those who need a short stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers a well earned rest. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure that everyone who lives here feels genuinely at home, treated with dignity and listened to as an individual. We take the time to understand each person's history, preferences and routines, because good care starts with really knowing someone. We want to be honest with the people we support and their families. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of requires improvement, and we are working openly and purposefully to address the areas identified. We have put clear steps in place and are committed to making the improvements that our residents deserve. We believe that transparency matters, and we would rather have an honest conversation than paint an unrealistic picture. • Care Home

Priory House is a residential care home in Halstead, Essex, supporting adults who have a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period, which can give a family carer a proper break. The people who live here call it home, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose within it, with as much independence as they want and as much support as they need. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with cooking, laundry and shopping, with medication and appointments, and with managing money and correspondence. We also support people to get out locally, to keep up the activities they enjoy and to stay close to family and friends. Communication and routine sit at the centre of the work. Learning how a person asks for help, how they show that they are unhappy and what settles them when a day goes badly matters more than any written policy, so we take time over it and write plans in a form the person can actually use. Changes are explained in advance wherever we can manage it, and where someone wants more independence we work towards it at their pace. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here whether this genuinely feels like their home.

    • Care Home

The Oakes is a residential care home in Laindon, Essex. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carer needs one. The house belongs to the people who live in it. Everyone has a support plan written with them, in a form they can actually use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want their week to contain. Some people here like a clear structure and will say so when it slips. Others prefer to take each day as it comes. Both are supported properly. People go out locally and further afield, keep up college, work, clubs and family contact, and we treat that as the purpose of the place rather than an extra when staffing allows. Communication is where we put most of our effort. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do tell us things and make sure every member of the team can read them confidently. When someone becomes distressed we treat it as communication and look for the cause, and anything that limits a person's freedom is agreed formally, recorded and reviewed with a view to reducing it. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall. We were glad of it and treat it as something to keep earning. Families, advocates and commissioners are welcome to visit.

Wellwick House is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We support older people who need help with daily life and adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays. We will start with our last inspection rather than leave you to find it. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We accepted the findings and worked through them with the team. The effort has gone into the things residents actually feel, which are safe and accurate medication practice, consistent staffing so people are supported by workers who know them, and making sure a concern raised by a resident, a relative or an advocate reaches a manager and gets a proper answer. What we are working towards has not changed. Everyone here has a plan agreed with them, covering how they like to be supported and what they want their days to hold. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want, and rooms are furnished with their own belongings. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure the team knows. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than the quickest way to stop it. Please come and visit, ask us about the inspection directly and judge the home as it is now.

Longview is a residential care home on Canvey Island. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also take respite bookings. We try to keep the home feeling domestic. People wake in their own time, keep their own belongings around them, decide how the day goes and are not hurried. Meals matter here and visitors are welcome throughout the day without booking a slot first. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We are not going to write around that. We know what was flagged, we have work under way, and we would rather discuss it openly with families than have them come across it later. Anyone considering a place here is welcome to ask us directly what has changed and what has not. Beyond that, what we can promise is plain dealing. If something goes wrong we will tell you, and we will tell you what we are doing about it. If a relative's needs are changing we will raise it early, while there is still time to talk it through properly rather than decide in a hurry. The Ridings is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults with a physical disability. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run the house as a home rather than a unit. The people living here decide the ordinary things: what is for tea, what is on the television, what time the day starts, whether today is one for going out or staying put. Staff are here to make those choices possible, not to make them on anybody's behalf. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we support it at their pace. That might be cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling independently or keeping up a job, a course or a volunteering placement. Where a person mainly needs life to be settled and predictable, that is an equally good aim and we treat it as such. Communication is something we pay real attention to, because understanding a person properly is the difference between them being in charge of their own life and having it arranged around them. Colchester is on the doorstep and people here use it, keeping up friendships, interests and routines from before they moved in. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay in Essex, please get in touch and come and visit.

    • Care Home

We are a residential home in Harwich, Essex, part of a trust whose work is the rehabilitation of people living with brain injury. We support younger adults and older people, including people with physical disabilities, and we also offer respite stays. Brain injury affects people in ways that are rarely obvious from the outside. Memory, planning, fatigue, temper, the ability to start something or to stop. Two people with similar injuries can need entirely different support, which is why we plan around the individual and why we keep reviewing as things develop. Recovery after brain injury is slow and uneven, and progress often shows up in small practical gains rather than dramatic ones. Our aim is for people to do as much for themselves as they can manage, even where that is slower and messier than doing it for them. Independence that has been lost is worth working towards patiently, and getting there means staff who know somebody well enough to tell the difference between a person who cannot and a person who needs more time. We work closely with families, who usually understand better than anyone what has changed and what the person was like before, and with the professionals involved in someone's rehabilitation. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are a family member or a professional considering a placement here, please get in touch and we will talk honestly about whether we would be the right setting.

Milton Lodge Retirement Home is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We keep our work deliberately focused. Residential care for older people is what we do, and we would rather do it attentively than spread ourselves across every kind of need. Residents tell us when they like to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they prefer to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to offer reassurance when someone is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. Independence is protected wherever it exists, and company matters as much as practical help. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit and we would far rather hear a concern early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

4 Cottage Walk is a small care home in Clacton on Sea. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including people with a physical disability, mostly younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Being a small house is the point rather than a limitation. The week can be arranged around a handful of individuals instead of a rota, and people are known in detail rather than in general. That matters most when something is wrong, because staff who know somebody well can tell the difference between a bad mood and pain, between boredom and distress, and between wanting to be left alone and quietly withdrawing. The people living here have a genuine say in the ordinary decisions. What is bought and cooked, how their rooms look, where they go and who comes to visit. Where somebody wants to build a skill or take on something new, we put effort behind it rather than recording it as an aim. Communication gets the most attention. Where speech is not how a person tells us things, we learn the way they do. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are a residential home in Epping, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with mental health needs. Much of our work is unremarkable, and that is rather the point: helping somebody wash and dress without hurry, sitting with a person who is anxious, remembering how they like their tea and who they want to hear from. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage and decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening in the house. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. That knowledge is worth more than any written plan when somebody is frightened or cannot place where they are. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it later. We are working through what the inspectors raised and are willing to go through the report with anyone considering the home. Please come and see the place as it really is. Hollyveer House is a residential care home in Benfleet, Essex, and we support older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, along with younger adults and people in recovery from problems with alcohol or drugs. Respite stays are available as well. A household this varied only works if people are treated as individuals rather than as categories. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of practical help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want a settled place to live, a team who do not judge, and a house that holds together when a bad week arrives. Recovery is rarely a straight line and we plan for that. For residents living with dementia we keep routines and surroundings familiar and give people time instead of hurrying them along. We should be open about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have worked through the findings with our team, and those areas are where our effort is concentrated at present. We would rather tell you ourselves and be asked about it. • Care Home

Mundy House is a residential care home in Basildon in Essex. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people whose sight or hearing is impaired, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We want this to be somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been put, and that shows in fairly ordinary ways. People arrange their own rooms. They get up and go to bed when it suits them. They eat what they like and decide how much of the day they want to spend in company. Visitors call in without ceremony. Staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility, and where sight or hearing has changed we pay attention to the practical adjustments that make a real difference, from lighting and contrast to giving information in a way somebody can genuinely take in. For people living with dementia we work on familiarity and time. The same staff, a day with a steady rhythm, surroundings that make sense, and space to respond properly when somebody is confused or anxious rather than hurrying them along. We ask relatives about a person's life because that history is usually the key to understanding what they are asking for. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see the home, meet the team and ask us whatever you want to know, including the awkward questions.

Maple Cottage is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults, including younger adults, who have a learning disability or autism. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We want to be straight about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We know what the inspectors found, we have an improvement plan and we are working through it with the people who live here, their families and their social workers, reporting on progress as we go. If you are considering a place, please ask us precisely what was wrong, what has changed and how we are checking that it holds. What we are working to protect meanwhile is the character of the house. This is somebody's home, not a unit. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, they have a real say in how the week is spent, and they are supported to do as much for themselves as they want to, whether that is cooking, shopping, managing money or getting out and about in Colchester. Our staff take time to learn how each person communicates, including those who do not use speech, and we write it down so that everyone responds in the same way rather than by guesswork. When somebody is finding life hard we look for the cause rather than the label. Please come and see the house, meet the team and put the hard questions to us.

Arundel House is a residential care home in Frinton on Sea, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. We treat this as where people live rather than where they have been placed. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make that possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf. Where somebody wants work, a course, a club or simply somewhere regular to go, we treat that as the purpose of our support rather than an extra bolted on. Being in a small seaside town helps with that, because people become known in the shops and cafes they use, and being recognised locally does more for confidence than any amount of arranged activity. We are careful about routine and about explaining change in good time, since for many of those here that is what makes a day workable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change about the place, and we act on what we are told.

Hatfield Haven is a residential care home in Bishops Stortford, Essex, caring for older people who need support with everyday life. We also take respite bookings, whether that is convalescence after a hospital stay or a break for someone who cares for a relative at home. We keep the home small enough that people know each other and staff know people properly. That is not sentimentality, it is what makes care safe. When you know somebody's usual self, you notice quickly when they are not it, and you can call the GP before a small problem turns into an admission. The day runs around the people living here. There is good food, plenty of tea, things going on for those who want them and quiet corners for those who would rather read or watch the garden. We help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility in a way that leaves people as much of their own independence as possible, because doing everything for somebody is rarely kindness. Families and friends are welcome at Hatfield Haven and we would rather they came often and told us straight when something is not right. We work closely with local health colleagues in and around Bishops Stortford. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Do ring if you would like to visit and see the place for yourself.

Brooklyn House is a residential care home in Clacton On Sea. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays for families needing a planned break. We try to run this as a household rather than a facility, and the test of that lies in ordinary things. Whether staff knock and wait. Whether you can get a cup of tea late in the evening. Whether the person helping you knows what you did for a living. Whether anybody notices when you have been quieter than usual. Being at the coast is genuinely useful. A walk along the front, weather permitting, or simply sitting somewhere with a view and some fresh air, does more for most people than anything we could organise indoors. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the working life, the places and the names, because those are what still connect when a great deal else has gone. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would rather be seen on an ordinary day than a prepared one.

Here at Willowcroft, we are proud to offer residential care and specialist support for people living with mental health conditions, right in the heart of Chingford, Essex. Our home is a place where residents are genuinely known as individuals, where their histories, preferences and personalities shape the way we care for them each day. We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, and we take that responsibility seriously. From the moment someone walks through our door, whether as a prospective resident, a family member or a friend, we want them to feel at ease. We take the time to listen, to ask the right questions, and to make sure that the support we provide truly fits the person in front of us. Our team works closely with residents to maintain as much independence and routine as possible, while ensuring that the right level of care is always there when it is needed. For those living with mental health conditions, we recognise that good support goes well beyond practical assistance. It means building trust, creating consistency and fostering an environment where people feel safe and understood. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated Willowcroft as Good, and we see that as an honest reflection of the standards our team works hard to uphold every single day. That said, we never see it as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can do better and listening to feedback from residents and their families. Chingford is a community we are genuinely part of, and we value the connections our residents have with the local area. If you would like to find out more about life at Willowcroft, we would love to hear from you.

Please get in touch to arrange a visit, ask any questions you may have, or simply talk through what your loved one needs. Willow Court is a residential care home in Waltham Abbey, Essex. We support autistic adults and adults with a learning disability, people managing mental ill health or an eating disorder, adults with physical disabilities, people with sight or hearing loss, younger adults, and people whose lives have been affected by alcohol or drug misuse. We also offer respite stays. Supporting that range under one roof is only possible if care is planned for the individual rather than the group. We spend real time getting to know somebody, write plans that describe the person rather than the category, and review them honestly as things change. What steadies one person here would unsettle another, and we would rather find that out by asking than by guessing. People choose how their rooms look, take part in the ordinary business of the house as much as they want to, and get out to what they enjoy locally. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, that belongs in the plan. Where somebody is in recovery, we offer reliability without judgement and work alongside the specialist teams involved rather than around them. Where mental health is fragile, we watch for early signs and involve the GP and community team promptly. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors and referrers are welcome.

Eastham is a residential care home at Woodham Ferrers in Essex. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and we offer respite stays. Quality here is made of small repeated things: a bath when somebody wants one rather than when the rota allows, a second helping if it is wanted, a chair by the window kept free for whoever always sits in it. Communication comes before anything else. Where somebody needs a particular approach we agree it, write it down and stick to it rather than improvising. For residents with physical disabilities we plan the practical side around what somebody can still manage themselves rather than what is quickest for us. For those living with dementia we protect the routine and ask families for the history that makes a person make sense to us. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are Woodboro Residential Care Home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people managing a mental health condition and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. Residential care means supporting people with what has become hard work and leaving everything else where it belongs, which is with the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work alongside district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them, and we tell families plainly where that line falls. Dementia takes up much of our day, and what helps most is knowing the person. Their history, their working life, the routines they have kept for decades. Someone distressed almost always has a reason for it, and the reason is more often practical than people expect. Where a mental health condition is part of the picture, the same principles apply: consistency, staff who do not take a difficult day personally, and a routine that is there to lean on rather than to enforce. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most. Enough time that nothing is rushed, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer things done rather than assuming. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Estoril is a residential care home in Southminster supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building towards more independent living. We run this as somebody's home rather than as a unit. Everybody has their own room and their own things, and the rhythm of the day belongs to the people who live here. Support is agreed with the person and those who know them best, and it can mean help with every part of personal care or simply prompting and encouragement while somebody does things for themselves. Communication gets a great deal of attention. Learning how each person expresses themselves, what settles them, what they find hard and what a change in behaviour is telling us is the core of doing this properly, and what we learn is written down so that the whole team supports the person in the same way. People are supported to have a life beyond the front door, keeping up interests and activities, getting out locally, attending appointments and staying in contact with family and friends. Respite stays can be arranged where appropriate. If you are looking for a placement for somebody, please contact us. We will assess carefully and say honestly whether we can meet the need.

Timber Grove is a residential care home in Rayleigh, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people living with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays, which families often use for a planned break or when circumstances change unexpectedly. This is people's home and we run it that way. Residents decide how their rooms look, what they eat, how a weekend is spent and who comes to see them. Where somebody needs support to make a decision we provide it in the form that works for them and we take the time it takes, rather than deciding on their behalf because that would be quicker. Routine and warning matter a great deal here. We hold to what has been agreed and explain changes properly and in advance. For people with sight or hearing loss, the practical details decide whether someone stays independent, so good lighting, familiar layouts, unhurried conversation and equipment that actually works are part of everyday practice rather than extras. We also support a life beyond the front door, including work and college placements, activities locally and contact with family and friends on the person's own terms. Belamacanda is a residential home in Clacton on Sea, caring for older people, for younger adults, and for people living with a physical disability. We are close enough to the sea that a trip out along the front is part of ordinary life here rather than a special occasion. We provide the sort of help that makes staying independent possible: support with washing, dressing, mobility and medication, given quietly and at the pace a person prefers. We ask people how they have always liked things done, write it down, and expect staff to follow it, because moving into a home should not mean giving up your own habits. For people with physical disabilities we pay close attention to the practical side, from equipment and getting about safely to making sure the house works for someone rather than against them. We keep in close contact with GPs, district nurses and therapists, and we chase things up rather than waiting to be asked twice. Meals are cooked here, visitors are welcome whenever they want to come, and there is company available for those who want it and peace for those who do not. We also offer respite stays, whether to give a carer a rest or to help someone regain confidence after illness. • Care Home

Cedar House in Pitsea is a residential home for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who live elsewhere. Our starting point is that this is somebody's home for years rather than a placement for a season. People choose their own rooms and how they look, they are part of deciding what gets bought and cooked, and the shape of the week comes from what they want to do. We keep the house small and settled on purpose, because a calm, predictable household does more for most people than any programme of activities. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing, medication, health appointments or money, we give it in the way they have agreed with us and we write it down precisely, so that the same thing happens whoever is on shift. For people who find change hard, that reliability is the whole of it. Communication matters enormously. Some of the people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or objects, and some make themselves understood in ways we have to learn. We put effort into learning, and we record what we learn so it is not lost when staff change. We want people to have proper lives outside, with college, work, clubs, friends and family. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

    • Care Home

Lime Court Care Home is in Dovercourt, Essex. We provide residential care for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult, and caring for people living with dementia is a large part of what we do. We are deliberately clear about what we are. This is not a nursing home. It is a place to live, where the parts of the day that have become hard are taken care of and the rest still belongs to the person. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing and medication. Meals are cooked on the premises, laundry gets done, and doctors and district nurses come in when somebody needs them. Dementia care comes down to consistency and to knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces turning up and surroundings that make sense will settle somebody more reliably than any programme of activities. We take time to learn about a person's working life, their family and their habits, because that is what makes sense of things later on. Beyond the help they need, residents run their own days, and visitors are welcome rather than merely tolerated. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Loughton, and we look after older people who have reached the point where managing at home has become difficult or lonely. We are not a nursing home, so what we offer is good residential care: help with washing and dressing, support with medication, proper meals, and the company of other people. We have tried to keep the feel of a house rather than a facility. People bring their own furniture and pictures, come down for breakfast when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and spend their days as they please. Some like the sitting room and the conversation that goes with it, others prefer their own room with the radio on, and both are perfectly fine by us. The staff here know the people they look after properly, which is how you notice that someone is quieter than usual or off their food before it turns into something more serious. We keep families informed and we would far rather ring with a small concern early than a large one later. We also take people for respite stays, whether a family carer needs a holiday or someone needs somewhere to build their strength up after being in hospital. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. You are welcome to come and see the home, meet the staff and have a cup of tea with us before deciding anything.

    • Care Home

We are Delamer House, a residential care home in Walton on the Naze caring for older people. We have tried to keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, come down when they wake rather than when a schedule says so, and spend their days as they please. Some like company from morning to night, others prefer their own room and their own quiet, and there is no right answer to that. What we provide is residential care rather than nursing care, and we say so plainly to families from the first conversation. Within it we help with washing, dressing and getting about safely, support people with their medication, provide proper meals, and make sure nobody is left alone all day unless that is their preference. The staff here stay long enough to know residents well, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter or eating less than usual before it turns into something more serious. We keep families informed and would far rather ring early about a small concern than explain a large one later. Visitors are welcome whenever they want to come. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places, which helps family carers who need a break and people recovering their strength after hospital. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Brewster House is a residential care home in Maldon, Essex. We support older people who need daily care, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with a visual or hearing impairment, and younger adults who need residential support. We try to run the house so that it feels like a home, because for the people living here it is exactly that. People choose when they get up, what they eat and how they spend their time. For someone living with dementia, the ordinary rhythm of a day, the same faces and enough time to do things at their own pace, is the greater part of good care. We also take people for respite stays, whether to give a family carer a rest or to support someone recovering after a stay in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to dress that up. We know where our work fell short of the standard we want for people living here, and we are working through those areas with our team rather than waiting to be told again at the next inspection. If you are considering us for a relative, please ask us about it directly. We will answer honestly and show you what has changed since. You are welcome to visit and see the house as it is on an ordinary day, and to talk to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

The Cedars is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, Essex, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions. A house that takes adults of different ages has to resist the pull towards a single pace. What suits a resident in their eighties who likes an early night is not what suits somebody in their forties who wants to be out during the day. Both are reasonable, and our job is to make room for both rather than let one become the house default. For residents living with dementia, the useful knowledge nearly always comes from families. What somebody did for a living, who they are thinking of when the late afternoon becomes difficult, what music settles them. We ask for that, record it and pass it between shifts. Supporting people with mental health needs asks above all for consistency and for staff who do not take a difficult day personally. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

We are a residential care home in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, and we are home to older people, including many living with dementia. We also offer respite stays for families who need a planned break. Our standards are simple and we would rather be held to them: good food, warmth, prompt help, personal privacy, and days that belong to the people living them. We write down the small preferences and we follow them, because a home where nobody remembers how you like your tea is a place you are staying rather than living. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they said. Staff are expected to speak up if they think something is wrong, including about each other. A home where nobody raises concerns is not a safe one. People here are addressed as they wish to be addressed. First names are not automatic, and nobody is called love or dear unless they like it. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives who visit often are the best inspectors we have.

    • Care Home

We are Tudor House, a care home in Colchester in Essex. We provide residential care for adults with a wide range of needs, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays, which can be a real help to families who need a planned break. Because the people living here have very different needs, we plan support one person at a time. What helps someone with a learning disability feel confident is not the same as what helps someone with dementia feel calm, and we would rather do both properly than offer one routine and hope it fits everybody. In practice that means paying attention to detail: how somebody likes to be spoken to, what upsets them, what they can do for themselves and would rather not have done for them. Communication is a large part of our work. Where someone uses signs, pictures, gestures or simply a look to tell us something, we learn it, we write it down so new staff know it too, and we check that we have understood rather than assuming. Colchester gives us plenty to do beyond our own front door, and we support people to get out, keep up with interests and see family and friends as often as they wish. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection. We are glad of it, and we still hold regular conversations with residents and relatives about what could be better here.

We are Eve Belle, a residential care home in Essex. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We aim for something domestic rather than institutional. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own habits, and decide for themselves how their day runs. What time you wake, where you eat, whether you want company or would rather sit quietly: those are your decisions and they stay that way. A great deal of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable, and we would rather describe it plainly than make grand claims. For people living with dementia we work with the person as they are now. Knowing their history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and having the patience to go at their pace prevents a lot of distress before it starts. Where somebody has a physical disability or a sight or hearing impairment, we give proper attention to access and communication, so those needs do not come to dominate the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we would always rather hear a concern early. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are genuinely proud of it, and we are also clear about what it does and does not mean. It is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong here. It reflects the fact that we know the people who live here well, that our staff are properly supported, and that when something needs putting right we deal with it rather than explaining it away. In daily life that shows in small things. People get up and go to bed when they choose. Meals are what somebody actually wants to eat. Broadoaks is a residential care home in Rochford in Essex. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we welcome respite guests as well as people moving in for the longer term. What we offer is fairly simple and we would rather describe it honestly than dress it up. A comfortable home, staff who are around and know people well, help with the practical things that have become difficult, and a day that belongs to the person living it. People here choose when to get up, what to eat, whether to join in with what is going on and whether they would rather be quiet. For people living with dementia, we work on familiarity above all. The same staff, the same rhythms, surroundings that make sense, and time to respond properly when somebody is confused or distressed. We ask families to tell us about a person's history because it is nearly always the key to understanding what they need in the moment. We know that moving a relative into a care home is a decision most families agonise over, and we try to make the early weeks as steady as possible, keeping in touch, welcoming visitors and being straightforward when something needs discussing. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and see the home, meet the team and ask us whatever you want to know.

Joseph Gardens is a residential care home in Silver End supporting younger adults, including people who have a learning disability and people who are autistic. It is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we try to keep that order of priority clear. People have their own rooms arranged as they want them, they have a say in meals and in how the house runs, and support sits underneath ordinary life rather than replacing it. What we provide varies from person to person. Some need help with personal care, medication and daily routines. Some want practical support with cooking, budgeting, shopping and appointments. Some mainly want dependable people nearby while they get on with college, work, volunteering or seeing friends. We do what is wanted and leave the rest alone, because taking over is easy and unhelpful. For the autistic people we support, predictability carries a lot of weight. We give notice before things change, we keep noise and busyness in shared areas manageable and we learn how each person prefers to be given information. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Daniel Kirby House is a residential care home in Chelmsford supporting adults with a learning disability or autism alongside older people who need residential care. It is a home rather than a placement, and the household is arranged around the people living in it. Support is planned individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the parts of life that matter just as much: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having something worthwhile in the week. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed. Where somebody wants more independence, we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. We support younger adults as well as older residents, and we do not assume that people want the same things simply because they share a roof. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the house first. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Gables is a residential care home in Colchester in Essex. We support adults living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. Because the people living here have genuinely different needs, we plan care one person at a time. What settles somebody with dementia is not what gives an adult with a learning disability confidence, and running one routine across both would suit neither. So we spend our attention on particulars: how somebody likes to be addressed, what they can do themselves and would rather we left alone, what makes a difficult day and what heads it off early. Where a physical disability or sensory loss affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building. Small habits carry a lot of weight: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture exactly where it lives, checking that glasses and hearing aids are clean and working. Understanding how each person communicates is central, especially where speech is not the main route, and what we learn is written down so that everybody responds the same way. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.

Seton Care Home is a residential care home in Brentwood, Essex. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, and we welcome people for respite stays, whether to recover after a spell in hospital or to give a family carer a proper break. We are small enough for everybody here to be known properly, and that shapes everything else we do. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it gets acted on the same day rather than at a review in a month's time. Residents decide how their own days go. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others in the lounge or keep to their own room. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would far rather families were involved in decisions than told about them afterwards. We are careful not to take over things that people can still do for themselves, because independence lost is hard to win back. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early when anything changes. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and see us in Brentwood.

Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Walton On The Naze, Essex. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We try to run this as a house where people live rather than a place where care is administered. Residents tell us when they prefer to get up, what they like to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they want to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. Independence is protected wherever it exists, and company matters as much as practical help. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Point Clear Road is a residential care home near Clacton on Sea supporting older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability or autism. We offer permanent places and respite stays. The house is run so that the people living in it make the everyday decisions: what is cooked, what time the day starts, whether today is one for going out or staying in, who comes to visit and when. Staff are here to make those choices workable and to step back from what somebody can manage alone or wants to learn to manage. Communication gets careful attention. A number of the people we support get their point across in ways other than speech, and understanding somebody properly is what allows them to direct their own life rather than have it arranged around them. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We would rather put that in front of you than leave you to discover it. We know which areas were raised, we have work under way, and we will go through the detail with any family considering a place here or already trusting us with a relative. Here at Shaftesbury Anvil House, we provide residential care for a wide range of people in the heart of Billericay, Essex. Our home supports older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers a much needed break. We are proud to have received a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the effort and commitment of everyone who works here. That rating matters to us, but what matters more is that the people who live here feel safe, respected, and genuinely at home. We know that moving into a care home, or finding the right place for someone you love, is not a decision anyone takes lightly. We try to make that process as straightforward and honest as possible. When someone comes to visit us, we encourage them to ask questions, look around properly, and get a real sense of who we are before making any decisions. Life at Shaftesbury Anvil House is built around the individual. We take time to understand each person's history, preferences, and routines, because good care cannot be one size fits all. Whether someone needs a great deal of support or just a little help day to day, we aim to preserve their independence and dignity at every stage. Our team works hard to create an atmosphere that feels warm and unhurried. We are always happy to hear from prospective residents and their families, so please do get in touch if you would like to find out more about what we can offer.

We are Creative Support at Nightingale Close in Witham, a residential care setting supporting a broad mix of people. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. That range works because our approach does not change from one person to another. We take time to learn how somebody communicates, what a good day looks like for them and what tends to make a difficult one, and then we build their support around that rather than fitting everybody into the same routine. Where a person can take on more for themselves, we make room for it rather than stepping in out of habit. These are homes where people live, not units where care is delivered, and the difference shows in how the day runs. People get up when they are ready and spend their time on what genuinely interests them. Respite stays are available too. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, though the measure we trust more is whether people here look at ease.

    • Care Home

We are Quenby Rest Home in Colchester, Essex. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people managing a mental health condition, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means supporting people with the parts of daily life that have become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person themselves. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth getting up for. For health needs beyond what we provide, we work alongside district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover something we should not, and we are straightforward with families about where that boundary falls. Dementia shapes a good deal of our day. We have found that correcting somebody's version of events achieves nothing, and that knowing who a person has been tells us far more than any list of symptoms. Someone who worked for decades to a particular rhythm often still carries it, and a routine built around that goes better than one imposed on top. Where a mental health condition is part of the picture, the same principles apply. Consistency, staff who do not take a difficult day personally, and a routine that is there to lean on rather than to enforce. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are, whether they are recovering after illness or giving a family carer a break.

    • Care Home

Frank Foster House is a residential care home in Theydon Bois. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. We plan around the person rather than the building. Before somebody moves in we ask how they have always run their day, what they want help with and what they would much rather do themselves, and we write it down so that it does not depend on who is on shift. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time that suits. For people living with dementia we keep routines steady and staff familiar, and we use what relatives tell us about a person's history rather than filing it away. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, we adjust how we communicate and make the house easier to move about. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say so plainly. We have accepted the findings, we are working through the areas raised, and we will talk anyone through what has changed since. Short respite stays are available. If you are considering us for yourself or a relative, please come and see the house and ask us whatever you need to ask.

Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex

Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.

Setting your criteria before you look

Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.

Getting value from a visit

Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.

Choosing between care homes in Essex

Requesting a care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.

How Essex County Council supports funded places

Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.

Understanding weekly fees

Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex

Which providers offer residential care in Essex?

Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?

Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.

Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?

It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.

How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?

Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
