Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

- Care Home
We are Umika Lodge, a residential care home on Canvey Island. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We offer residential care rather than nursing care, and we make that clear to families from the outset so that nobody moves somewhere unable to meet their needs. Within that, we help with washing, dressing and moving about safely, support people with medication, provide proper meals and make sure nobody is left alone all day unless they prefer it. The home is run around the people in it. Nobody is woken to fit a rota, mealtimes bend around the person, and how the day is spent is a matter for the individual. Some want company from breakfast onwards and some want their own room and their own quiet. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We learn about the work somebody did, the family they raised and the routines that steady them, and we use that rather than correcting them about the present. Families are kept properly informed and are welcome to visit whenever suits them. We would always rather ring early about a small worry. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please get in touch to arrange a visit.

- Care Home
Dudbrook House is a residential care home in Brentwood, Essex, for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults whose needs are suited to a home like ours. We are not a nursing home, so our strength is in personal care, good daily routines and knowing the people who live here well. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and the parts of the day that have become difficult, and we do it in a way that leaves people as much control as possible. Residents choose when they get up, where they sit, what they watch and whether they want to join in with what is going on. For residents living with dementia we keep the home familiar and the staff consistent, and we take the time to work out what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom to be managed. Families know their relative best, and what they tell us shapes the plan. Respite stays are available, whether that is a break for a family carer, a chance to get strength back after illness, or a way of seeing whether this kind of home suits somebody before any permanent decision is made. You are welcome to visit, look round properly and talk to the staff and residents. Ask us anything you like. Please ring to arrange a convenient time.

- Care Home
HF Trust at Pound Lane is a residential care home near Bishops Stortford supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults and some older residents. It is a house on an ordinary road and we aim to run it as a home, not a unit, with the people who live here having a genuine say in how things are done. Support is worked out individually. Some people need help through most of the day, including personal care; others need very little of that but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate. We take our time at the start, listen to the people who know a person best, and adjust as we learn. Life here involves the ordinary business of a household: cooking and shopping, keeping your own room how you like it, deciding what to do at the weekend and getting out into the local area. We help where help is needed and stand back where it is not, which is often the harder discipline. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always meeting new faces. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a break and the person a proper stay rather than a stopgap. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

- Care Home
Silvanna Court is a residential care home in Wickford, Essex. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and we offer respite stays. We measure ourselves on the ordinary: warm rooms, food worth finishing, prompt help, and the sense that somebody in the building knows you properly. We sort communication out properly rather than making do. If a person cannot follow us easily, nothing else we do will land as intended. For residents with physical disabilities we plan the practical side around what somebody can still manage themselves rather than what is quickest for us. For those living with dementia we protect the routine and ask families for the history that makes a person make sense to us. Residents have a say in how the place runs, and not only in theory. Where we cannot do what has been asked for, we explain why rather than letting it drift. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We would rather be known locally for being straight with families.

- Care Home
We are Hollymede Cottage, a residential care home in Wickford caring for older people, including many who are living with dementia. We have tried to keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, come down when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and spend their days as they please. Some like the sitting room and the conversation that goes with it, others prefer their own room with the radio on, and neither choice needs explaining. Dementia care takes patience and it takes knowing the person. We spend time learning about the work somebody did, the family they raised, the music they grew up with and the routines that settle them. We do not argue about what year it is or where a person believes they are going. We meet people where they are and find something good to do together. The staff here know residents properly, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter than usual or eating less before it becomes serious. We keep families informed and would far rather ring early about a small worry. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. We work with GPs, district nurses and social workers, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please get in touch to arrange a look round.

We are Maitland House, a residential care home in Clacton on Sea supporting older people and younger adults. What we offer is residential care done properly rather than anything more elaborate. Help with washing, dressing and moving about safely. Support with medication. Meals worth sitting down to. Warm rooms, and company for those who want it. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about that, because the worst outcome for anybody is moving somewhere that cannot meet their needs. The home is run around the people living in it. Nobody is woken to suit a rota. Breakfast happens when somebody comes down rather than at a fixed hour. Some residents like the lounge and the conversation that fills it, others would rather keep to their own room and their own quiet, and neither choice needs defending. Our staff stay long enough to know people properly, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter than usual or off their food before it becomes something serious. We keep families in the picture and would far rather make an early call about a small worry. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. - Care Home
Maldon Lodge is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support older people who need help with daily life and adults with mental health needs, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need residential care for a short period. Bringing together people at different stages of life and with different needs works because we plan with each person individually. Somebody rebuilding after a difficult period needs something quite different from an older resident who can no longer manage alone, and both should be able to live here on their own terms. Everyone decides their own basics. When to get up, what to eat, whether they want company or their own room and their own company. Personal care, where it is needed, is given quietly and at the person's own pace, and rooms are furnished with people's own belongings. Where someone has mental health needs, we agree in advance what a difficult patch looks like for them and what they would like us to do about it, so nobody is improvising at the worst moment. We would far rather step in early and lightly than late and heavily. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community teams. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are registered with them and work to their standards. Please come and visit us in Colchester.

We are Little Oaks, a residential care home in Witham, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people living with a mental health condition, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. The people we support often have needs that overlap in ways the usual categories miss. Somebody may have a learning disability and be managing a mental health condition as well, and support that addresses only one of those will not hold up. So we plan around the person and take the time to find out what genuinely helps on a good day and on a difficult one. Predictability and consistency do most of the work. Knowing what is happening, when and with whom, and finding that it turns out to be correct. Familiar staff. A routine somebody can rely on and that we protect rather than ask them to be flexible about. Choice runs through the day as far as it can, and where a decision needs support we support it rather than taking it over. Families and advocates are involved as much as the person wants. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We are Down Hall Residential Home in Southminster, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people managing a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. A home with that mix of people in it cannot run on one routine, and we do not try to make it. What works instead is knowing each person well enough that their day makes sense to them. The skill is holding all of it together without anybody's needs being quietly traded away for somebody else's. Where dementia and a sensory impairment occur together, we check the simple explanation first. A hearing aid that is not working accounts for a great deal that would otherwise be recorded as confusion. Where a mental health condition is part of the picture, the same principles apply: consistency, staff who do not take a difficult day personally, and a routine that is there to lean on rather than to enforce. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Peldon Campus is a residential care home near Colchester, Essex, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Support here is agreed with each person and built around them. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable, and support to do things for themselves rather than have them done. We expect people to take on more over time rather than settle into being looked after. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Where somebody is having a hard time, we look first at what is being asked of them rather than treating the person as the difficulty. People choose how their rooms look, what they eat and how they spend their time, and we support them to keep up with family, friends and whatever they were doing before they moved in. Being out in the Essex countryside means space and quiet, which suits a good many of the people we support, and we make a point of getting out into the wider area regularly. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

We are Falcon House Residential Home in Bishops Stortford. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays. A home of our size has an advantage that is easy to overlook, which is that staff genuinely know everybody who lives here. Not just the care plan but the preferences, the history and the small things that make a difference to somebody's day. That knowledge is what good care is actually built on and it is very hard to substitute for. Dementia shapes much of our work. We have found that correcting somebody's account of things achieves nothing, and that knowing who a person has been tells us far more than any list of symptoms. Distress nearly always has a cause, and it is more often practical than people expect. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover something we should not. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Ashlyn is a residential care home in Harlow, Essex. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. We also pay attention to the things easy to let slide: clean spectacles, working hearing aids, a favourite cardigan coming back from the wash. Neglect shows up there first. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they told us plainly than be polite about it.

Plume Avenue in Colchester is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with learning disabilities and autism and people managing mental health conditions. A house shared by adults of different ages and very different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely tolerated. Our residents do not want the same day as one another. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own company until the afternoon. Some need a great deal of practical help, others mainly a settled base and staff who know them properly. Running the place well means holding all of that at once without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. We plan support with each individual and with whoever they want involved, and we adapt how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

Glengariff Residential Home is in Clacton on Sea and we care for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Being near the sea means getting out for some air is easy. Avalon is a residential care home in Colchester supporting younger adults, including people who have a learning disability, autistic people, people with a physical disability and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. Support here is agreed with each person rather than handed to them. For some it is help with personal care, medication and daily routines. For others it is practical assistance with cooking, laundry, money and appointments. For others again it is mainly about reliable people being around while they get on with work, college or their own social life. Where sight or hearing is impaired, consistency is everything. We keep belongings exactly where people expect them, we describe what we are about to do before we do it and we make sure we have actually been understood rather than assuming so. Where somebody has a physical disability we take the time that moving and transfers properly require. For the autistic people we support, notice of change, clear communication and attention to noise and busyness make the greatest difference. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Brenalwood Care Home is in Walton on the Naze, and we provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. We try to make this feel like a home rather than somewhere people have been placed. Residents get up when they want, spend their days as they choose, keep their own belongings about them and have visitors whenever it suits them. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals and all the practical business of the place, and they do it in a way that leaves people as much say as possible over their own lives. The small things are what residents notice. A familiar face on shift, tea made the way you like it, being asked rather than told, and somebody spotting that you are quieter than usual. For residents living with dementia, and for anybody with sight or hearing loss, that sort of familiarity matters far more than a busy programme of activities. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody find out what we are like before making any bigger decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives how we are doing, and the uncomfortable answers are the useful ones.

- Care Home
Chrislyn House is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea supporting a broad mix of people. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. We support people living with eating disorders as well. That range works because our method stays consistent. We take time to learn how somebody communicates, what their day ought to contain and what tends to make a difficult one, and then we build support around that rather than fitting everybody into the same routine. Where a person can take on more for themselves, we make room for it instead of stepping in from habit. Life here belongs to the people who live in it. People get up when they are ready, keep their own things around them and spend their time on what genuinely interests them. Respite stays are available too, for people needing short term support and for families who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is whether people here look at ease. Visitors are welcome.

The Belfry Residential Home is in Billericay, Essex, caring for older people. We do one thing and we try to do it properly. Residential care for older people who can no longer manage at home, in a house where the day belongs to the people living in it. Nobody is woken to suit a rota. Meals are unhurried and worth turning up for. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects a person's dignity, which in practice means asking before acting, explaining what we are doing, and leaving people to do for themselves whatever they still can. We also take seriously the parts of the day that are not care tasks at all. Company when it is wanted and solitude when it is not. Visitors welcomed at hours that suit them rather than us. Conversations that have nothing to do with anybody's health. Those things are what a person actually lives in. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit.

The Grange provides residential care in Saffron Walden for older people, including people living with dementia, and we also take planned respite stays. Most of what makes a care home a good place to live is undramatic. Getting up when you choose, food you actually want to eat, a familiar face on shift, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is where our effort goes. Residents decide how their own days run, keep their own belongings around them and see visitors whenever it suits them. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable shape to the day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating a diagnosis as the whole story, and we pay attention to the signs that tell us somebody is uncomfortable or in pain when they can no longer say so directly. A calm unhurried approach prevents far more distress than it costs in time. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest and let people try us out without any longer commitment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and the uncomfortable answers are the useful ones.

Phoebe House provides residential care in Harwich for older people and younger adults, including people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also support people with eating disorders, and we offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone. The particulars are where the work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and how they want to be helped with a physical disability are all things we learn from the person. For residents with mental health needs, consistency and a lack of fuss count for a great deal. Where somebody is living with an eating disorder, patience, consistency and a calm approach at mealtimes matter more than anything else we could offer. Please visit, and spend time with the people who already live here.

Priory Lodge is a residential care home in Colchester supporting younger adults and people living with mental health conditions. We should be open about our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, which is requires improvement. We would rather raise it ourselves. We know which areas were identified, we have a plan of work under way covering staff training and supervision, our record keeping, and how people and their families are involved in decisions, and we are glad to talk through where we have got to with anyone considering us. The work of the house continues properly meanwhile. People keep their own routines as far as they can and arrange their own rooms. Support covers washing and dressing where that is needed, medication, meals, money and paperwork, and getting to appointments. A calm and predictable household does more good than any particular intervention, and we do not treat a difficult week as a failure. Short respite stays are available. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to ask.

Tye Green Lodge is a residential care home in Harlow providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need help with everyday life, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. The place runs at the pace of the people living in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone, given in a way that leaves somebody their privacy and their dignity. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar. Our staff tend to stay with us, and that continuity does more to settle a person than any particular approach could. We also take trouble over the building so that it is easy to understand and move around. Families are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available. Windle Court is a residential care home in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on familiar staff, a routine that stays where it is and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We care for residents with physical disabilities and those with a visual or hearing impairment, adapting how we communicate and how we help people move about so that dignity and independence are protected. We support younger adults too, planning their interests and routines on their own terms. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the home before a permanent decision is made. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit on an ordinary day, speak to the people who live here and form your own impression of the place.

1 Parkstone Avenue is a residential care home in Benfleet, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, adults living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, alongside older people who need residential care. Support is planned individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the parts of life that matter just as much: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, adapting for sight and hearing where that is needed, and we help people move about safely without taking over from them. A settled routine matters greatly to many of those we support, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. We support younger adults alongside older residents, and we do not assume that people want the same things simply because they share a roof. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. - Care Home
Mill Road House is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, and people with loss of sight or hearing. Most of the people living here are younger adults. Where somebody has sensory loss alongside a learning disability, the ordinary assumptions of care stop holding. You cannot announce yourself from a doorway and expect to be heard, and a great deal of what might look like reluctance is really a failure on our part to make contact in a way that reaches the person. So communication is the central task here rather than a preliminary to it, and we use signing, touch, objects of reference, symbols, routine and consistency, whatever suits the individual. Beyond that this is a home like any other. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and are supported to get out to clubs, appointments and family. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody try the house first. Please contact us if you would like to come and see the house for yourself.

The Bungalow is a small residential home in Wickford, Essex, supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays, planned in advance so that a short stay is a visit somewhere familiar. Because we support people with both learning and physical disabilities, a lot of our attention goes on practical detail. Equipment, hoists, transfers, seating and access all decide whether somebody can get where they want to go and do things for themselves, so we get them right and review them as needs change. Just as much attention goes on communication. Some people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or a device, and others tell us a great deal through their behaviour. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, how we announce ourselves and give information matters enormously. Beyond that, this is somebody's home. People choose how their rooms look, help with the shopping and the cooking if they want to, and decide how their week is spent. Henderson and Harvard is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Supporting that range of people well means being specific rather than general. For an older resident it may mean unhurried help with personal care, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, and support to manage money, appointments and getting out to a job or a course. Where physical disability is part of the picture we think carefully about equipment, seating, transfers and access, because those details decide how much independence somebody actually has, and where sensory loss is involved, how we announce ourselves and give information matters enormously. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, and we record what we learn so that it survives a change of staff. We run this as the residents' home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit.

Millard House is a residential care home in Braintree, Essex. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia and residents with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We think of this as somewhere people live, not somewhere care is delivered to them, and we try to make that difference obvious in how the house runs. Residents tell us when they like to get up, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the day. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious instead of arguing with them. We keep the day familiar and explain changes in advance wherever we can. For residents with physical disabilities we pay close attention to mobility and to the practical arrangements that let someone do more for themselves. Families are welcome whenever they want to come and we would far rather hear a worry while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

11 Barnfield Road is a small residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of the people living here are younger adults. Being small is the point. It means the people living here know one another properly and it means we know them properly too, which is what allows support to be genuinely individual rather than individual on paper. People decorate their own rooms, help decide what is cooked and when, and come and go to work, college, clubs and family as they choose. Support is worked out with each person and reviewed with them. Communication gets particular attention, and we use whatever suits the individual, whether that is speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply knowing somebody well enough to understand what they are telling you. Getting that right is the difference between somebody making a decision and being told about one afterwards. Short respite stays are available, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody see how they get on here first. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange a visit and see the house.

Broome End is a residential care home at Mountfichet in Essex, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything we write here, so please visit, speak to the people who live here and ask us the questions that matter to you.

- Care Home
Alexandra House in Harwich is a care home on the Essex coast. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We are a home rather than an institution, and we try to keep the day shaped by the people living in it. Residents decide when to get up, where to spend the morning, whether to join whatever is happening or leave it alone. Our staff are around to make those choices possible and to notice when somebody is not themselves. Dementia support here is practical. We learn a person's history from them and from their family, we keep surroundings and routines familiar, and we treat agitation as information rather than a nuisance. Somebody who wants to go home at four o'clock every afternoon is usually telling us something about a life they once had, and responding to that works far better than arguing. Being by the sea is not incidental. Fresh air, a change of view and the chance to get out of the building do more for people's spirits than most organised activities. Respite stays give families a genuine break, and they also let somebody try the home before making a longer decision. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please come and visit if you are looking at care in this part of Essex.

Meadows is a residential care home in Braintree, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, adults living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Most of the people we support are younger adults. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody get used to the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household actually works.

Brook Care Home is a residential care home in Rochford, Essex. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia and residents with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. Help with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage themselves is protected. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not content with that. We have reviewed how we assess and record residents' needs, how we train and supervise our staff and how quickly we act when a resident or a relative raises a concern, and we have treated the findings as a working list rather than a verdict. Progress of that kind shows up slowly and in small things, which is why we would encourage anyone considering Brook to visit, look around properly and ask us direct questions about what has changed and what is still in hand. Families are welcome here and we would far rather hear a concern early.

Corner House is a residential care home in Clacton On Sea, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. With residents of different ages and very different needs living together, we plan support person by person rather than running the house on one timetable. We help with personal care, meals, medication and appointments, and we support people to keep up the interests, work, study and friendships that make a week feel like their own. Where someone manages something themselves, we protect that and stay nearby rather than stepping in. Communication is something we take real time over. Learning how a person asks for help, how they show that something is wrong and what settles them when a day becomes difficult is the foundation of everything else. Mental health support is provided alongside colleagues in local health teams where that is helpful, and for residents with physical disabilities we pay attention to mobility and to what makes independence possible. Families are welcome whenever they wish to visit and we would far rather hear about a worry while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we judge ourselves on whether life here actually feels like home.

Help with personal care, meals and medication is given quietly and with respect for privacy. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure rather than argue when someone is unsettled. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms are arranged, and for residents with physical disabilities we pay attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are regulated by them and are building the care planning, records and oversight that a good inspection outcome requires.

- Care Home
Crossfields Lodge is a residential care home in Halstead. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays. We should say plainly that our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted what was found, we have been working through it, and if you are considering us for yourself or a relative, please ask us what has changed and speak to the people who live here. The house is run with the people in it rather than around them. Residents choose how their rooms look, what they eat, how they spend their time and what part they play in the household. Cooking, shopping and laundry are things people do with support where they can, because independence grows out of doing things rather than being told about them. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team as consistent as we can. For autistic residents we keep routines stable and give notice of change well in advance. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand so the house is familiar when they arrive. Please get in touch if you would like to visit and look round properly.

- Care Home
Ayletts House is a residential care home in Chelmsford, Essex. We are home to older people, both for the long term and for shorter respite stays when a family carer needs a rest. The basics are what we are for. Food somebody wants to eat, a room they are comfortable in, help that comes without a wait, and time to themselves. We want staff to know enough about a person that the conversation goes somewhere. That means asking families for the history and actually reading it, not filing it. Respite guests are properly welcomed rather than merely accommodated. We ask beforehand how the person likes things done. When somebody is admitted to hospital we stay involved rather than handing over and waiting. Familiar information travels with them. Alcohol, smoking and other adult choices are treated as adult choices. We advise where it helps and we do not lecture. We keep the number of people involved in somebody's personal care small, because being helped by a stream of different faces is wearing. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Our own standard is whether people here are treated as adults with a history.

Old Shenfield Place is a residential care home in Brentwood, Essex. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. A home is made or spoiled in small increments. A shave done properly. A hearing aid with a working battery. Glasses that are clean. Nobody left waiting in a corridor. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the working life, the places and the names. We were last rated requires improvement overall by the Care Quality Commission. It would be easy to leave that out, and we would rather set it out and be asked about it. We keep an eye on weight, appetite and mood, because those are usually the first signs that something has changed for somebody. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour, and grandchildren and dogs are part of that. A home that is awkward about visitors gradually becomes isolating. Anybody considering us should come without an appointment, talk to residents and relatives away from staff, and press us for specifics about what has changed and what has not yet.

Bridgemarsh Residential Home is in Chelmsford. We provide residential care for adults, including people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group under one roof means we cannot run the home to a single pattern, and we do not try. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents want a very structured day. Others want the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere steady to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. For residents with a learning disability or who are autistic, the environment itself is part of the support. Noise, lighting and how predictable the day is all matter, and so does having somewhere quiet to go. With dementia, familiar staff and a steady rhythm do most of the work, and we treat distress as something with a cause. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Bridgemarsh and ask us anything.

Hawthorn Bungalow is a small residential care home in Brentwood. We support older people, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Being small is central to how we work. People here are not part of a crowd. Staff know everyone properly, routines can be genuinely individual, and the place feels like a household rather than a facility. For many of the people we support, particularly those who find noise and unpredictability hard, that is the most important thing about us. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than only around risk. Where somebody needs a great deal of help, we still look for the parts they can take on themselves, because independence disappears quietly unless someone is protecting it. We give real attention to communication and to the environment. We learn how each person expresses themselves, including those who use little or no speech. Where sight or hearing is reduced we keep things where people expect to find them and adapt how we communicate. With dementia, familiar faces and a steady rhythm do most of the work. Respite stays give families a break and give the person staying somewhere settled to come to. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. What care homes cost in Essex, per week
| Type of care | What the council pays | What self-funders are typically asked |
|---|---|---|
| Residential care Middle half of prices from 44 East homes. Median £1,582. | Varies by council | £1,421 to £1,708 |
| Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935. | Varies by council | £1,800 to £2,126 |
| Residential dementia care Middle half of prices from 33 East homes. Median £1,785. | Not published separately | £1,602 to £1,877 |
| Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940. | Not published separately | £1,870 to £2,100 |
Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.
Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex
Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.
Setting your criteria before you look
Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.
Using the inspection ratings well
Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.
Getting value from a visit
Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.
Choosing between care homes in Essex
Requesting a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.
How Essex County Council supports funded places
Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.
Understanding weekly fees
Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex
Which providers offer residential care in Essex?
Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.
What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?
Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?
Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.
Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?
It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.
How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?
Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
