About Us
We are Hollymede Cottage, a residential care home in Wickford caring for older people, including many who are living with dementia.
We have tried to keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, come down when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and spend their days as they please. Some like the sitting room and the conversation that goes with it, others prefer their own room with the radio on, and neither choice needs explaining.
Dementia care takes patience and it takes knowing the person. We spend time learning about the work somebody did, the family they raised, the music they grew up with and the routines that settle them. We do not argue about what year it is or where a person believes they are going. We meet people where they are and find something good to do together.
The staff here know residents properly, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter than usual or eating less before it becomes serious. We keep families informed and would far rather ring early about a small worry. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them.
We work with GPs, district nurses and social workers, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places.
Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please get in touch to arrange a look round.
