Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

Here at Jenny's House, we are a residential care home based in Clacton on Sea, Essex, and we are proud to be part of this community. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and that reflects the commitment our whole team brings to supporting the people who live with us every day. We also offer respite care, which means families and carers can have a short break knowing their loved one is in a safe, familiar and welcoming environment. Whether someone is with us long term or for a shorter stay, we aim to make sure they feel genuinely at home. Our approach is straightforward. We get to know each person properly, understanding what matters to them, what they enjoy, and how they like their day to look. Support plans are built around the individual rather than fitting people into a routine that suits us. We believe that good care means listening as much as it means doing, and our team works hard to build real, trusting relationships with the people in our care and with their families. Being located in Clacton on Sea means we have a wonderful seaside town on our doorstep, and we love making the most of that. Getting out and about, staying connected to the local community, and having opportunities to do things that bring genuine enjoyment are all things we take seriously. If you are looking for care for yourself or someone you love, we would always encourage you to come and visit us, have a look around, and ask us anything you like. - Care Home
Don Thomson House Residential Care Home is in Harwich, Essex, providing a settled and comfortable home for older people who can no longer manage easily on their own. Many of the people who live here are living with dementia. Our approach rests on patience and familiarity rather than on keeping people busy. The day has a shape without being run to a timetable, the surroundings stay recognisable, and we avoid changing things for the sake of it. We take time early on to learn about somebody's life, work, family and habits, and we ask relatives for the small details as well as the medical ones, because those are usually what helps most when a person is unsettled. We also support residents with physical disabilities and residents living with sight or hearing loss. That is mostly a matter of sensible adjustments: the right equipment, enough time, lighting that suits, and speaking in a way somebody can genuinely follow so that nothing about their care is decided over their head. Visitors are welcome at whatever time suits them, and we keep relatives informed rather than waiting to be asked. Respite stays are available too, for family carers needing a planned break and for people needing support after illness or a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at homes in the Harwich area, please come and see us.

Following our most recent CQC inspection in February 2024, The Lodge received an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We believe in being open and honest about this outcome. The inspection recognised the strengths that our residents and families experience every day, awarding Good ratings for how Effective, Caring, and Responsive our care is. We also acknowledge that the Safe and Well led domains were rated as Requires Improvement, and we take this feedback seriously. It has given us a clear focus for continued development, and we are committed to strengthening these areas so that every aspect of life at The Lodge reflects the high standards our residents deserve. Improvement is an ongoing journey, and we welcome the opportunity to demonstrate the progress we are making. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions involved. Nestled within the familiar surroundings of the CO postcode area, our home combines the comforts of everyday living with the specialist support our residents need to thrive. Our setting has been thoughtfully arranged to feel less like an institution and more like a genuine home. Being located in Colchester means we benefit from the character of one of the East of England's most historic towns, with easy access to local amenities, community activities and the green spaces that make this part of Essex so appealing for families visiting their loved ones. Our care is centred on the individual. As a home specialising in support for adults with learning disabilities and autism, we understand that no two people are the same. Every resident has their own routines, preferences, communication styles and aspirations, and we take the time to learn what matters most to each person we support. In practice, this means encouraging independence in the areas where a person feels confident, offering gentle support where it is needed, and creating a predictable, sensory aware environment that helps our residents feel secure. We also offer respite care, providing families and regular carers with a trusted place to turn when they need a short break. Whether it is planned time away, an emergency arrangement, or simply the chance for a loved one to experience a change of scene in a safe setting, our respite provision is designed to give both residents and families peace of mind. Our home provides residential care for older people, younger adults, and individuals living with learning disabilities or autism, all within a warm and homely environment. Inside, we aim to create spaces that feel less like an institution and more like a genuine home, where residents can relax, socialise, or enjoy quiet moments as they choose. Our care approach is rooted in respect for each individual. For older residents, we focus on preserving dignity, independence, and the simple pleasures of daily life, whether that means a favourite breakfast, a chat with a friend, or support with personal routines. For younger adults and those with learning disabilities or autism, we tailor our support to encourage confidence, personal growth, and meaningful engagement with the world around them. In practice, this means our team takes time to understand each person, their history, their preferences, and what makes them feel safe and valued, so that families can feel reassured their loved one is being seen as a whole person, not simply a set of needs. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make. That is why we place such emphasis on open communication, kindness, and consistency. Relatives are warmly welcomed, and we believe that family involvement is an essential part of life at Three Cups. As a newer entry on the CareCompass platform, our home is currently listed as Not Yet Rated by the Care Quality Commission. This simply means a full inspection rating has not yet been published, and it should not be confused with a concern about quality. We remain fully committed to meeting and exceeding the standards expected of a registered residential care provider, and we welcome any questions families may have about our approach in the meantime. If you are exploring care options in Harwich for yourself or someone you love, we would be delighted to hear from you. A conversation, a visit, or a quiet cup of tea with our team can often answer more questions than any brochure. The Cottage Residential Care Home is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter period. We are a small setting and that shapes how we work. Staff know everyone here properly, so a change in somebody's mood or health tends to be noticed early rather than once it has become a problem. Routines matter to many of the people we support, so we hold to them and we explain changes in good time and in a way each person can follow. Care plans are written with the person and with whoever they want involved, and we revisit them when life changes rather than when a form falls due. Where somebody needs support to make a decision, we give it in the form that works for them and we take the time it takes rather than deciding on their behalf because that would be quicker. Colchester is home for most of our residents and we help them keep up with family, appointments and the places they already know. Visitors are welcome here and we would rather families felt part of the house than treated as guests. If you are considering The Cottage for someone, please come and visit, meet the team and form your own view of the house on an ordinary day.

Jameson House is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. We aim to run a home rather than an institution. People have their own room and their own belongings, keep their own routines, and decide how much of the day they want to spend in company. Support sits alongside that, covering the parts of life that need it rather than taking over the whole of it. Because the people who live here have different needs and different ages, we plan around individuals. For an autistic person, predictability and a manageable sensory environment might be the most important thing. For someone with sensory loss, it is the consistent habits that matter, such as saying who we are on the way into a room and leaving belongings exactly where they were. For an older resident it might simply be an unhurried morning and good company. Communication is adapted to the person rather than the other way round. We work with families, advocates and health professionals, and we treat the person's own view as the one that counts most. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people here what would make things better, and anyone considering the home is welcome to visit and see it as it is.

We at Cavendish Residential Care Homes are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the welcoming coastal town of Clacton On Sea, Essex. Our home provides a nurturing environment where older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia can feel truly supported, valued, and at ease. Set within the CO postcode area of Clacton On Sea, our residential setting benefits from the gentle pace and friendly community spirit that defines this well loved seaside town. The location offers a peaceful backdrop for daily life, whilst remaining well connected for family visits from across Essex and the wider East of England. We have thoughtfully created a homely atmosphere where residents can settle in comfortably, enjoy familiar routines, and feel part of a genuine community. Our care is tailored around the individual needs of each person who joins us. For older people, we focus on maintaining dignity, independence, and wellbeing, offering the right level of support so that daily life feels reassuring rather than restrictive. Our dementia care is delivered with patience and understanding, recognising that every person living with dementia has a unique story, unique preferences, and a unique way of engaging with the world. In practice, this means our team takes the time to learn what matters most to each resident, from favourite meals and music to cherished memories and daily habits that bring comfort. We also welcome younger adults who require residential support, providing a setting where their goals, interests, and personal identity are respected and encouraged. For families needing shorter term arrangements, our respite care offers a trusted option, whether following a hospital stay, during a family holiday, or simply to give a loved carer a well earned break. Respite stays are approached with the same warmth and attention as long term care, ensuring residents feel welcomed from the moment they arrive. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we believe in being open about where we stand. Our most recent CQC inspection, carried out in May 2026, resulted in an overall rating of Requires Improvement, with the same rating across the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led domains. We take this feedback seriously and view it as a clear roadmap for the improvements we are committed to making. Every observation from the inspection is being used to strengthen our practice, refine our routines, and ensure that the care we deliver reflects the standards our residents and their families rightly expect. We believe transparency matters, and we would rather families understand our current position and our determination to improve than shy away from honest conversation. Behind the rating is a team that genuinely cares about the people who live here. Our approach is rooted in kindness, respect, and the belief that a care home should feel like home in the fullest sense. From the warmth of a morning greeting to the quiet reassurance of an evening chat, we aim to create moments that matter throughout the day. If you are exploring residential care options in Clacton On Sea for a parent, partner, relative, or friend, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We would be delighted to speak with you, answer your questions, and arrange a visit so you can see our home for yourself and meet the people who make it what it is. Drummonds is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter period. Supporting people of quite different ages and needs in one house works only if you plan around each of them. An older resident may want a settled routine with help close at hand. A younger adult may be working towards more independence and want support that stays in the background until it is asked for. We write plans with the person rather than for them, and we revisit them when life changes rather than when a form falls due. Where somebody needs support to make a decision we give it in whatever form suits them, and we take the time it takes. For people with sight or hearing loss the practical details decide whether somebody stays independent, so lighting, familiar layouts, unhurried conversation and equipment that works are ordinary practice here. Here at The Orchards in Colchester, Essex, we provide residential care for a wide range of people, and we take real pride in getting to know each person who comes through our doors. We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with learning disabilities or autism, mental health conditions, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short break or a period of additional support. Whether someone is moving in with us permanently or staying for a shorter time, we do our best to make them feel genuinely at home from the very first day. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are pleased about, though we see it as a foundation rather than a finishing line. We are always looking at how we can do things better, listening to the people we support and their families, and making sure our approach stays personal rather than routine. What matters most to us is that life here feels like real life. That means having choices, maintaining relationships with the people who matter to you, and being supported in a way that respects your background, preferences and individuality. We do not believe in a one size fits all approach, and the care we provide reflects that. If you are thinking about The Orchards for yourself or for someone you love, we would warmly encourage you to come and visit us. Walking around and having a conversation with the team is often the best way to get a sense of whether a care home feels right, and we are always happy to answer questions honestly and without any pressure. We are based in Colchester and are proud to be part of the local community here in Essex.

- Care Home
Frintondene Care Home in Frinton on Sea provides residential care for older people. We are a home where the day is comfortable and unhurried, and where staff and residents know each other properly rather than in passing. We do not run the house to a rigid timetable. People get up when they are ready, spend their time as they wish, and eat food that is worth looking forward to, cooked here and adjusted happily for anyone who fancies something else. Help with washing and dressing is given calmly, because dignity is largely a matter of pace and manner rather than policy. Company is available for those who want it, and quiet is respected for those who do not. Some residents like the lounge and the conversation that goes with it, others prefer their own room, the paper and a visit from family, and both are entirely normal here. Relatives are welcome throughout the day and we would much rather hear a concern from you early than discover it late. We encourage families to stay involved in decisions rather than handing them over to us. We also offer respite stays, which give family carers a planned break or support someone recovering their confidence after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Penny Pot Care Home is a residential home in Clacton on Sea, looking after older people who need help with daily living rather than nursing care. We offer permanent places and respite stays, and many of our residents live with dementia. We try to keep the emphasis on life rather than on care, even though care is what we provide. Residents choose how they spend their time, keep up with family and friends, have a say in what happens in the house, and are supported to do things for themselves wherever they can. Doing something for somebody is nearly always quicker than helping them do it, and nearly always the poorer choice. Our dementia care rests on familiarity and patience. The same staff, a routine that holds its shape, surroundings that make sense, and time given rather than grudged when somebody needs longer to find their words. Where a resident becomes distressed we look for the reason, because there almost always is one, whether pain, confusion, boredom or fear. Being near the coast is useful and we make sure people get out, because outings are the first thing to slide when a home is busy. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Come and look round whenever it suits you, meet the people who live here, and ask them what they make of us.

Honey Lane is a residential care home in Waltham Abbey. We look after older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we take respite bookings from those who need a short stay. We try to run the place as a home rather than as an institution. People get up when they want, spend the day as they choose, and have as much company or as much quiet as suits them. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention to what people genuinely like eating rather than what is easiest to prepare in bulk. For residents living with dementia, we keep the surroundings calm and familiar and we go with the person rather than correcting them. Small consistencies make a real difference: the same faces, the same rhythm to the day, belongings in the places where they are expected to be. Getting to know somebody properly is the part we care most about. What they did for a living, who matters to them, what they cannot abide, how they like their tea. Those details are what stop a room being just a room. Families help us learn them, and they are welcome here whenever it suits them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to look round, please arrange a visit and see the home as it normally runs.

We are Rowan House, a residential care home in Brentwood supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. The home works rather like a shared household. People have their own rooms arranged the way they want them, the rest of the house belongs to everybody, and decisions about how things run are made with the people living here rather than for them. Meals get planned together and cooked together where people want to be involved. Support is built around the life each person wants. For some that means a full week of college, work or activities out in the community. For others it means a settled rhythm at home with familiar company. Both are entirely reasonable, and our job is to make either work properly. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, whether that is cooking, handling money or travelling independently, we work at it at their pace and we do not assume a ceiling on anybody. Communication is the foundation of this work. We take time to learn how each person expresses what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure that knowledge is shared with every member of staff rather than held by one or two. We work closely with families, social workers and health professionals, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please contact us to visit.

Our specialism lies in supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism, including younger adults who are stepping into a new chapter of independence. In practice, this means our approach is centred on the individual. We take time to understand each person's routines, preferences, communication styles, and aspirations, so that every day feels familiar and reassuring. We encourage residents to build confidence, develop life skills, and participate in activities that reflect their own interests, whether that involves creative pursuits, community outings, or simply enjoying quieter moments in familiar company. We also provide respite care, offering families and regular carers a trusted place to turn when they need a short break. Respite stays with us are planned with the same care and attention as longer term placements, ensuring that guests feel welcome, safe, and understood from the very first day. Quality and safety underpin everything we do. Quiet Waters has been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission, achieving a Good rating across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families weighing up options, this consistent picture across every domain offers meaningful reassurance that residents are looked after by a team committed to doing things properly, from safeguarding and clinical practice through to leadership, responsiveness, and the warmth of everyday care. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand how much thought and emotion goes into that process. If you are exploring residential care, specialist support for a learning disability or autism, or respite care in Brentwood, we would be delighted to hear from you. Jamesons at Wormingford Road in Colchester is a residential care home supporting adults and younger adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic. We are a small home, which is what allows us to know each person properly and to support them in the way that actually suits them. Everyone living here has a support plan written with them, in a form they can take part in, and we revisit it as things change. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, including through routine, mood and behaviour, and we adapt our approach rather than expecting people to adjust to us. A predictable day, careful regard for sensory needs and staff who stay the same are what keep life here settled. We want the house to run like a home. People help with the shopping and cooking, share the chores, choose what happens at the weekend, keep up with family and friends, and get out into Colchester and the surrounding countryside. Where someone wants to build a skill, we support the practice rather than doing the job for them. We also offer respite stays, which give families a planned break and let the person enjoy somewhere familiar. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Squeaks House Residential Care Home is in Southminster, Essex. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays. We want to be straightforward about our regulatory position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have accepted the findings rather than disputed them, we are working through an improvement plan, and we have made changes to training, supervision and the way we record and review the care we give. We would rather answer questions about it face to face than have families rely on a leaflet. The daily work of the home goes on meanwhile. Residents keep their own routines, choose how they spend the day and what they eat, and are helped with washing, dressing, medication and getting about in the way that suits them. For people living with dementia, our team relies on knowing the person, their history and the things that reassure them. Families are welcome at any reasonable time and we keep in touch with them honestly. If you are considering us, please come and look round, ask the difficult questions and judge us on what you find here rather than on what we say about ourselves.

The Grange is a residential care home in Wickford, Essex, offering a permanent home and short stays to adults who need support with daily living. We care for older people and for younger adults, and the people who live here have a wide range of needs. Some need help with washing, dressing and medication. Many are living with dementia, and for them we keep the surroundings calm and familiar, give people time, and take the trouble to learn what a person's life has been like so that we can be proper company rather than simply helpful. We also support people living with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, adjusting how we communicate and how the building is used so that nobody is left out of what is going on. Respite stays are available too. Sometimes a family carer needs a planned break, and sometimes a person needs looking after for a few weeks after an illness before going home again. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. That reflects the ordinary, consistent work our staff do rather than anything showy, which is exactly how we would want it. Choosing a care home is a difficult decision and usually a rushed one. We would rather you came and saw The Grange for yourself, met the team, and asked us the awkward questions. Barrow House is a residential care home in Southend on Sea, supporting adults who need help with daily living in a setting that feels like a home rather than a unit. Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic, and with younger adults. We also support people living with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we adapt how we communicate and how the house is used so that everyone can take part in what is happening around them. We start from the person. That means finding out how someone communicates, what a good day looks like for them, what they find difficult and what they would like to be able to do. Support plans are written with the person, and with families or advocates where that is wanted, and we change them as people change. Independence matters here. If somebody can do something themselves, or could learn to, our job is to make that possible rather than to step in and do it for them. We also offer respite stays, which can give families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and properly staffed. Our staff are trained for the work they do, checked before they start and supported by managers who know the people living here well. If you are looking at options for yourself or a relative, you would be welcome to visit Barrow House, meet the team and see for yourself how the house feels.

Shaftesbury Netteswell Rectory is a residential care home in Harlow, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a genuine break while the person staying with us has company and a change of surroundings. This is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we try hard to run it that way. People have their own rooms, their own routines and a real say in how their days go. Support here is about making ordinary things possible rather than doing them for people. Cooking a meal you actually want. Doing your own shopping. Managing money and appointments. Getting to a club, a course or a job. Keeping in touch with family and friends. We pay attention to that distinction, because independence is quietly worn away by help that arrives too quickly. Communication matters a great deal to us. Not everybody here uses many words, and understanding somebody properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected rather than assumptions. Plans are written with the person, reviewed honestly and changed when they stop fitting. We also work alongside families and with social work and health colleagues so that support is joined up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and independence. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Broomhills provides residential care in Rochford for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. We try to make this feel like a home rather than somewhere people have been placed. Residents get up when they want, spend their days as they choose, keep their own belongings about them and have visitors whenever it suits them. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals and the practical running of the place, and they do it in a way that leaves people as much say as possible over their own lives. The small things are what residents notice. A familiar face on shift, tea made the way you like it, being asked rather than told, and somebody spotting that you are not quite yourself today. For residents living with dementia, and for anybody with sight or hearing loss, that familiarity matters far more than any programme of organised activity. Where somebody has a physical disability, we agree together how they want to be helped. Respite stays give family carers a genuine rest, and they let somebody find out what we are like before making a bigger decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing.

Peter House is a residential care home in Frinton on Sea, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism, people living with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Because the people here have quite different needs, we do not run a single routine and expect everybody to fit it. Somebody who wants a quiet and predictable week should be able to have one; somebody who wants to be out and busy should be supported to be. We work out what suits each person, we write it down so that support stays consistent across shifts, and we revisit it as people change. Where somebody communicates in their own particular way, our staff learn it rather than guessing. Whatever the need, this is somebody's home. We are Swan Care Home in Southminster, Essex. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite bookings for shorter stays. We have kept our focus clear rather than trying to be everything to everyone. Residential care for older people is what we do, and dementia care is a large part of it. Doing that well depends on knowing each person properly: their history, the work they did, the family names, the things that comfort them and the things that reliably unsettle them. Staff who carry that knowledge are the ones who can head off distress before it takes hold, and who notice quickly when somebody is unwell. Beyond that, much of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable. A decent breakfast at a time that suits you. Your own chair and your own belongings. The garden when the weather allows. Company if you want it and quiet if you would rather, and somebody with the time to sit down and properly listen. We also support people to keep hold of what they can still manage themselves, and to keep up the connections they already have locally. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we tell them when something has changed rather than waiting to be asked. Please ring us and come and see the home at a normal busy time of day.

The Berrys Carehome provides residential care in Basildon for older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism. We also take planned respite stays. Day to day our work is practical. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want to eat, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents decide how their own days run, and where somebody communicates differently or needs the day to be predictable, we work to that rather than to a general routine. We would rather be straightforward about our inspection position than have families discover it elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to argue with the findings. They described real gaps, and our manager and staff team have been working through them, with tighter medicines practice, clearer records, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that problems surface quickly. We know improvement has to be demonstrated rather than asserted, and we are not there yet. If you are considering us for somebody, come and look round properly, ask exactly what has changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are in the building rather than relying on our own account of ourselves.

Maple View provides residential care in Colchester for adults, including younger adults, adults with learning disabilities and autism, and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. The particulars are where the work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves are all things we learn from the person rather than assume from a diagnosis. Where somebody has sight or hearing loss, we take care over how we approach and speak with them, which costs nothing and changes how every interaction feels. We also support people to have a life beyond the building, keeping up with family and friends and getting to the activities, groups, work or education that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Kinglea Court is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability, from the surrounding part of Essex and the eastern edge of London. People rarely arrive at a care home at a moment of their own choosing. It usually follows a fall, a hospital stay, a bereavement, or a long slow period in which managing alone stopped being realistic. We treat the first few weeks as the part that matters most, and we move at the person's pace rather than the paperwork's. Somebody may well be grieving for their own house while settling into a room here, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. After that, the work is ordinary and important. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. Enough going on to give the day a shape, with no obligation on anybody to take part. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of being helped to move keep a life from shrinking to the size of a chair. With dementia we work on familiar faces and a calm house instead of correction, and we ask relatives early for the history that helps. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and look round, unannounced if you would rather.

We are Lychgate House, a residential care home in Colchester. We support older people and younger adults, including people managing a mental health condition. What we offer is residential care done carefully rather than anything elaborate. Help with washing and dressing. Support with medication. Meals people actually want to eat. Warm rooms, safe surroundings and company for those who want it. The home runs around its residents. Nobody is woken to suit a rota and how somebody spends the day is their own business. Some people like the sitting room and the conversation, others would rather keep to their own room, and neither choice needs defending to anybody. For people managing a mental health condition, we work steadily and without fuss. A settled routine, staff who do not change constantly and somebody to talk to when things are hard tend to matter far more than anything formal. We keep in contact with community teams and GPs where they are involved so that support is joined up. Our staff know residents well enough to notice when somebody is quieter or more withdrawn than usual, and we ring families early rather than waiting. Visitors are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Please get in touch if you would like to look round.

Penfold Lodge is a residential care home in Clacton On Sea, Essex. We are a house by the coast where people live at their own pace, and we try to keep the feel of a home rather than an institution. We care for older people, including many living with dementia, and we also support adults managing a mental health condition and younger adults who need residential care. Our team helps with personal care, medication, meals and mobility, but the part we think about hardest is the ordinary shape of a day. Getting up when you want to, eating something you actually fancy, having company when you want it and peace when you do not. Dementia care runs through much of our work. We learn people's histories, the jobs they did, the music they liked, the family names that still bring a smile, and we use that knowledge every day rather than filing it away. We offer respite stays too, which give a family carer a proper break while their relative is somewhere settled and looked after. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We work closely with relatives and local health services, and visitors are welcome. If you are looking at homes in Essex, please come and see us and judge the place for yourself.

We are a residential care home near Southend on Sea supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with mental health conditions, people living with eating disorders and people whose difficulties have involved alcohol or drugs. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories, and it means taking people as they are. Several of those living here have had a difficult road and have met plenty of judgement along the way, and they will not meet it from us. What helps is staff who are steady, who do not moralise and who know a person well enough to see difficulty coming rather than only reacting once it has arrived. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available as well as longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

- Care Home
Fiorano is a residential care home in Thaxted, Essex, supporting adults who need help with everyday living in a house rather than an institutional setting. Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic, and with younger adults. Because the house is small, staff get to know everybody here properly, which matters a great deal. It means noticing when somebody is quieter than usual, knowing which sounds and situations are unsettling, and understanding how each person prefers to be approached. We begin with the person rather than with a list of needs. We find out how somebody communicates, what a good day looks like for them, what they would rather do for themselves and what they would like to work towards. Support plans are written with the person, and with family or an advocate where that is wanted, and we revisit them as things change. Where someone can do something themselves, or could learn to, our job is to make that possible rather than to take over. We also offer respite stays, giving family carers a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and well staffed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at options for yourself or someone you care about, please get in touch and come and see the house for yourself.

We at Ewer Court are proud to offer dedicated residential care in the heart of Colchester, providing a warm and welcoming home for older people and adults living with a range of support needs. Nestled within the historic town of Colchester in Essex, our home has been thoughtfully designed to feel familiar, comforting, and genuinely homely from the moment you step through the door. Our setting in the CO postcode area places us within easy reach of local amenities, green spaces, and the wider community, making it simple for family and friends to visit and for residents to remain connected to the place they know and love. The surroundings offer a peaceful backdrop to daily life, whilst the convenience of being part of a vibrant Essex town means there is always something to enjoy, from local outings to community engagement. Within our walls, we have created an environment that prioritises comfort, dignity, and individuality. Communal areas invite residents to socialise, share a cup of tea, or simply enjoy quiet companionship, whilst private spaces offer a calm retreat whenever rest or reflection is needed. Every corner of the home has been considered with our residents in mind, supporting independence whilst ensuring that help is always close at hand. The care we provide reflects the diverse needs of the people who call Ewer Court home. We support older people who require residential care, adults with learning disabilities or autism, those living with physical disabilities, and individuals with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults who benefit from our specialised approach. In practice, this means our team takes the time to truly understand each resident, building personalised care plans that honour their preferences, routines, and aspirations. For families, this offers the deep reassurance of knowing that a loved one is supported by people who see them as a whole person, not simply a list of needs. Our approach is grounded in respect and partnership. We work closely with families, healthcare professionals, and the wider community to ensure that every resident enjoys a meaningful, stimulating, and safe daily life. Whether that involves supporting someone to maintain a cherished hobby, encouraging social connection, or providing sensitive assistance with daily living, our focus remains on enabling people to live as fully and independently as possible. We are pleased that the Care Quality Commission has rated Ewer Court as Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led. This recognition, awarded following inspection, reflects the consistent commitment of our team to deliver care that is not only of a high standard but also kind, considered, and tailored to the individual. For families exploring care options, this independent assurance offers genuine peace of mind. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that responsibility. If you are considering Ewer Court for yourself or a loved one, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and discover how our community in Colchester could become a place to call home. Our door is always open, and we would be delighted to welcome you.

What care homes cost in Essex, per week
| Type of care | What the council pays | What self-funders are typically asked |
|---|---|---|

| Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935. | Varies by council | £1,800 to £2,126 |
| Residential dementia care Middle half of prices from 33 East homes. Median £1,785. | Not published separately | £1,602 to £1,877 |
| Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940. | Not published separately | £1,870 to £2,100 |
Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.
Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex
Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.
Setting your criteria before you look
Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.
Using the inspection ratings well
Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.
Getting value from a visit
Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.
Choosing between care homes in Essex
Requesting a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.
How Essex County Council supports funded places
Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.
Understanding weekly fees
Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex
Which providers offer residential care in Essex?
Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.
What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?
Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?
Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.
Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?
It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.
How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?
Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
