About Us
Barrow House is a residential care home in Southend on Sea, supporting adults who need help with daily living in a setting that feels like a home rather than a unit.
Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic, and with younger adults. We also support people living with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we adapt how we communicate and how the house is used so that everyone can take part in what is happening around them.
We start from the person. That means finding out how someone communicates, what a good day looks like for them, what they find difficult and what they would like to be able to do. Support plans are written with the person, and with families or advocates where that is wanted, and we change them as people change. Independence matters here. If somebody can do something themselves, or could learn to, our job is to make that possible rather than to step in and do it for them.
We also offer respite stays, which can give families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and properly staffed.
Our staff are trained for the work they do, checked before they start and supported by managers who know the people living here well.
If you are looking at options for yourself or a relative, you would be welcome to visit Barrow House, meet the team and see for yourself how the house feels.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
