Care Homes in Essex 316 care homes · 249 rated Good by CQC

Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

    • Care Home

The Haven Residential Care Home is in Clacton on Sea, supporting adults who need help with daily living, including people living with mental health conditions. Much of our work is with younger adults. Ours is a household rather than a unit, and we think that matters. People come and go, use the kitchen, have visitors and organise their own time as far as they are able. The support sits underneath ordinary life rather than replacing it. Good mental health support is largely a matter of consistency and knowing people well. We work with the same residents over long periods, we learn what a difficult stretch looks like for each person and what tends to help, and we keep close working relationships with community mental health teams, GPs and social workers so that support does not fall apart between one part of the system and another. Some of the people living here are working towards greater independence, and we plan that with them rather than for them. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Westacres is a residential care home in Basildon, and we support adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, adults living with mental ill health, and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available as well. We run a household rather than a unit. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and a genuine say over how the day goes. The staff team is kept consistent, because support from people who know you well is a different thing from support from whoever is on shift. Changes are explained in advance, the shape of the week holds, and we take sensory comfort seriously, since noise, light and busyness often decide whether a day goes well. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home, and wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them. Independence is much easier to keep than to recover, so if somebody can manage a task with a prompt, we prompt rather than take over. For residents living with mental ill health, what we mostly offer is steadiness: a settled place to live and a household that holds together when somebody has a difficult stretch. For those with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to know.

Prince Edward Duke of Kent Court is a residential care home in Braintree, Essex, offering older people and younger adults a comfortable place to live with support always close at hand. We try to keep the feel of a household rather than an institution, with days led by the people living them. Supporting residents living with dementia is a substantial part of our work. We approach it by learning who somebody is, keeping routines familiar and the day unhurried, giving notice before anything changes, and looking for the cause when a resident is unsettled rather than treating it as behaviour to be contained. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and equally with the parts of the day that give it value: conversation, company for those who want it, quiet for those who do not, and time outdoors when the weather allows. Rooms are personalised and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in this part of Essex, please come and see us on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

Schumey's Corner is a residential care home in Southminster in Essex. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. Being a small setting is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and we can genuinely arrange the week around the actual preferences of the people living here instead of finding a compromise that suits nobody. Rooms belong to the people in them. The shopping is decided by the people who will eat it. Where anybody goes at the weekend is their own decision. A great deal of what we do builds skills rather than doing things for people. Cooking, handling money, travelling into town, making an appointment, keeping in touch with family. Progress can be slow and it can go backwards, and our part is to keep the opportunity open without pressure and to make something of it when it works. Understanding how each person communicates matters more than almost anything else here, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way, write it down so that new staff respond identically, and keep checking we have understood rather than assuming. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

The Retreat is a residential care home at Walton on the Naze. We support older people needing help with daily living, adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions and people with a physical disability. We also support some younger adults. Support here is planned around the individual rather than a house routine everybody has to fit. We find out how somebody likes their day to run, what they eat, whether they want company or quiet and who we should ring when something happens, and we treat that as the substance of the care rather than paperwork. For the autistic people we support, predictability and clear communication do most of the work. For people living with mental health conditions, consistency and staff who stay steady when things are difficult count for a great deal. Where somebody has a physical disability we take the time that moving and transfers properly require. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across Essex are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Our home at 26 Dugard Avenue in Colchester is a small residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults working towards a more independent life. Respite stays are available as well. Being small is deliberate rather than a limitation. Being properly known by the people who support you changes every hour of the day, and that is far easier in a house than in a large setting. The staff team stays consistent, the shape of the week holds, changes are explained before they happen, and we pay attention to noise, light and the sensory details that decide whether somebody can settle. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home. Wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them, and we are patient about it. A task done slowly by the person themselves is a better outcome than the same task done quickly by us. We are also interested in what people actually want from life. Work, college, hobbies, seeing family, getting out to places that matter to them. Our job is to make those things happen rather than to fill the day with activities chosen on somebody's behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anyone considering the house for somebody they support are welcome to visit and ask us anything at all.

    • Care Home

We are Brook Lodge Care Home in Basildon, Essex. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we also offer respite stays. Our work is residential rather than nursing care. We support people with the daily things that have become difficult while leaving them in charge of everything else, and for health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover something we should not. Dementia takes up a large share of our attention. What helps most is knowing the person. Their history, their working life, the routines they have kept for decades and the things they would never have tolerated. That tells us how to approach a difficult morning better than any general method, and families are usually the ones who can give it to us, so we ask early and keep asking. For people with a physical disability the practical details matter most: enough time that nothing is rushed, equipment set up properly, and asking how a transfer is best managed rather than assuming. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Here at Ducks Halt, we are a residential care home nestled in the village of Kirby le Soken in Essex, and we are proud to offer a genuinely homely environment where the people in our care feel safe, valued and at ease. We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, younger adults, and people living with a learning disability or autism, mental health needs, or a physical disability. We also provide respite care for those who need a short break from their usual routine, as well as for the families and carers who support them. Whatever brings someone to our door, we take the time to get to know each person properly, understanding what matters to them in their daily life and building our support around that. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as good, and that reflects the genuine effort our team puts in every day. We do not take that rating for granted. We keep listening, keep learning and keep looking at how we can do things better for the people who live here. Kirby le Soken is a peaceful and welcoming part of Essex, and we feel that setting very much shapes the calm and relaxed atmosphere we have worked hard to create at Ducks Halt. Life here is unhurried. Residents are encouraged to maintain their independence wherever possible, to keep up with hobbies and interests they enjoy, and to feel that this is genuinely their home. If you are considering care for yourself or for someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to come and visit us. There is no better way to get a feel for who we are than to walk through our doors, have a cup of tea and have an honest conversation with our team.

Maranello is a residential care home in Thaxted supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, and we also offer respite stays. We are a small home in a quiet Essex village, and both of those things matter. Small means everybody knows everybody and support can genuinely be shaped around individuals. Quiet means the environment is calm, which for a lot of the people we support is the difference between a manageable day and an overwhelming one. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and a real say in how the household runs, from meals and shopping to how the week is planned. Our staff support people to do things rather than doing things for them, and we treat independence as something built through practice. Communication is where we start with everyone. Some of the people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or objects, and others show us what they need through behaviour that takes patience to read properly. We put the time in and keep at it. Routines here are steady, and changes are planned and explained well in advance rather than sprung on anybody. Respite guests are part of the household while they are with us and receive the same support as anyone else. If you would like to look round, please get in touch and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

Bethel Place is a residential care home in Halstead, Essex, supporting adults living with a learning disability or autism, including people with a visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. We also offer respite stays. We run this as a home first. Residents have their own rooms and belongings, a real say in what is cooked and what happens at the weekend, and support with whatever they find harder in daily life, from personal care and communication to medication, money and getting out and about. We are careful to help without taking over, because independence needs room to grow. Where someone has sight or hearing loss, small adjustments make a large difference. Good lighting, clear and consistent layouts, unhurried explanation and communication in the way that suits the person are simply part of how the house runs rather than something added on. We take time to learn how each person makes themselves understood, and we do not assume that quiet means content. Support here is planned with each person and reviewed honestly when things change. College, work, friendships, hobbies, faith and family time matter as much as any care task, and Halstead and the surrounding area give us plenty to use locally. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you would like to visit Bethel Place, please get in touch.

Blamster's Link is a small residential care home in Halstead supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team reads those signs the same way. Once that is in place, life can be kept predictable enough for a person to relax, and we can spot early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available as well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here seem at ease.

    • Care Home

Newlands is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. We are a small house and everything about how we work depends on that. The people who live here are known properly: not just their support plans, but what makes a good day, what makes a bad one, what they are working towards and what they would like everybody to stop asking about. Our aim is an ordinary life. People have their own rooms and a genuine say in how the household runs, from the shopping to what happens at the weekend. Work, college, volunteering, clubs, friendships and family carry on, and where something looks difficult we start from how to make it possible rather than whether to permit it. Physical disability should not decide what somebody's week contains, and we plan on that basis. Communication is where most of our effort goes, because almost every difficulty in this kind of support traces back to somebody not being understood. We learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure the whole team can read it. When somebody is unsettled, we look at what we might change about the environment or our own approach first. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to visit and see the house as it normally is.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Witham, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would far rather hear about a problem early. Please come and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Little Paddocks is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea supporting adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism and people with physical disabilities. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. The particulars are where the work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves, and how they want to be helped with a physical disability are all things we learn from the person rather than assume from a diagnosis. When change cannot be avoided, we prepare for it properly and at their pace. We also support people to have a life beyond the building, keeping up with family and friends and getting to the activities, groups, work or education that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, and spend time with the people who already live here.

    • Care Home

We are a residential home in Colchester supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. The house runs as a household rather than an institution. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping is done, who wants to go out and where to. Those are small matters that add up to whether somebody feels at home or merely accommodated. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do. For some that means a job, a college course or a regular volunteering day. For others it is getting out regularly, keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff, or learning to cook something new. We take the long view, since progress in this work is usually gradual and the gains that matter are often ones nobody outside the house would notice. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can and explain changes in advance rather than springing them on people. Respite stays are available alongside longer places, which can give a family a planned break while the person stays somewhere settled. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Willow Health is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people living with a physical disability. We work in a domestic way rather than an institutional one, because this is somewhere people live and it ought to feel like it. Our starting point is always the individual. We spend time learning how a person communicates, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and what helps them feel secure again, and we make sure the whole team understands those things consistently. Life here is not run to a fixed timetable. People get up when they are ready, spend their days on things that interest them and keep as much say over their own routine as they want. We also look for the everyday chances for people to do more for themselves, whether that is helping with cooking, managing their own space or getting out into Colchester with the right support alongside them. Respite stays are available for people who need support for a short period and for families who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. What tells us more than a rating is whether people living here look relaxed and whether relatives feel free to turn up and ask anything. Visitors are always welcome.

Elizabeth House is a residential care home in Hadleigh, Essex. We support older people who need help with daily living, along with younger adults, residents living with dementia, people with a physical disability and those living with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. We support a mix of people here, so we plan around individuals rather than categories. Residents decide when they get up, how they spend their time and what they eat. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered. There is company and activity for those who want it and no pressure on anyone who does not. Our dementia care rests on knowing people properly. We ask families about a person's work, family, music and habits, because reassurance works far better when it is familiar, and we keep the pace unhurried. For residents with a sensory impairment we make sure conversation and information genuinely reach them, and where a physical disability is part of the picture we make sure staff are trained in the right equipment and techniques. We work closely with local GPs, community nurses and therapists, and we keep families properly informed. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

At Maple Manor, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Colchester, Essex. We specialise in supporting people with learning disabilities and autism, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual living arrangements, as well as for the families and carers who support them. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will make, and we do not take that lightly. Our team takes the time to get to know each person as an individual, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what matters most to them in day to day life. We believe that good care starts with genuinely listening, and we try to make sure every person living with us feels at home rather than simply accommodated. For those we support with learning disabilities and autism, we focus on creating a consistent and reassuring environment. Familiarity and routine can make a real difference, and we work closely with residents and their families to ensure our approach reflects each person's needs rather than a one size fits all model. Our respite care offer gives people the chance to stay with us on a shorter term basis, whether that is planned in advance or arranged at short notice. We aim to make every respite stay feel just as settled and comfortable as a longer term placement. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good, which reflects the effort our whole team puts in every day. Mandalay is a residential care home in Witham, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, most of whom are younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need somewhere for a short period, whether that is a planned break for a family or a response to a change in circumstances. This is people's home, and we try to run it that way. People choose how their room looks, what goes on the shopping list, how they spend a weekend and who visits. Where somebody needs help to make a decision, we give it in whatever way suits them, and we take the time rather than deciding on their behalf because it would be quicker. Predictability matters here. We keep to what has been agreed, we explain changes properly and in good time, and we ask staff to know each person well enough to notice when they are unwell or unsettled about something they find hard to put into words. We also want people to have a life outside the house. That means supporting work and college placements, activities locally, and contact with family and friends arranged around the person rather than around us. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Mandalay for someone, come and see the house on an ordinary day and ask us whatever you need to.

Cleaveland Lodge is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We care for older people, including many residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our work is daily life supported well, with general practitioners, district nurses and other community professionals brought in when they are needed. Families usually come to see us after months of worrying, and the most useful thing we can do at that point is answer their questions straight, including the ones they feel uncomfortable asking. What happens if he will not get up. Can he bring his own chair. What do you do when someone is distressed at night. We would far rather have those conversations plainly at the beginning than paper over them. The daily work is unremarkable and needs doing consistently. Unrushed help with washing and dressing, medication given properly, meals people actually want and staff who notice when a resident is not themselves. For people living with dementia we keep the routine predictable and the faces familiar. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Our setting in Chelmsford places us within easy reach of local amenities and green spaces, making it convenient for families across Essex and the wider East region to visit and stay connected with their loved ones. The CM postcode area is well served by transport links, and our home reflects the character of the community around us, offering comfortable communal areas and private spaces where residents can relax, socialise, or simply enjoy a quiet moment. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we take that responsibility to heart. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of experience our team brings to daily life at Mansion House. We support older people with a range of needs, provide dedicated dementia care with patience and understanding, and welcome younger adults who may benefit from residential support. We also care for individuals living with physical disabilities and those with visual or hearing impairments, tailoring our approach so that every resident feels seen, heard, and valued. In practice, this means our team takes time to get to know each person as an individual. Whether you are planning ahead, navigating a sudden change in circumstances, or simply gathering information, we are here to answer your questions with honesty and care. Welshwood Manor is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter time. We aim to run the house in a way that leaves people in charge of their own days. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, what to do and how much they want to be involved with everybody else. Our staff are there to make those choices possible rather than to organise people into a timetable. For residents with physical disabilities in particular, we think carefully about what independence looks like in practice: the right equipment, the right amount of time, and support that stops exactly where somebody's own ability begins. Day to day we help with washing, dressing, medication, meals, continence and moving about safely, and we work with GPs, district nurses, physiotherapists and other health colleagues so that people get the specialist input they need without leaving home. We keep an eye on mood and company as well as on health, because isolation does its own damage. When somebody moves in we spend time learning about their life before they came here, and we use that to shape how we support them. Families are welcome to visit whenever they wish and we would rather they told us early if something is not right. If you are considering a care home in Colchester, please arrange to come and look round.

Hailey House is a residential care home in Maldon, Essex. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and caring for people living with dementia is a large part of our work. We are not a nursing home. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many older people that turns out to be exactly the right amount of support, because it takes away the effort and the worry without taking away the independence. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A familiar order to the day, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more surely than anything else. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what explains them to us when words begin to fail. Beyond the help they need, residents run their own days, and Maldon is on the doorstep for anyone who wants to get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us.

    • Care Home

Lime Trees is a residential care home in Harwich, and we like to think of ourselves as a proper part of the town rather than a building set apart from it. People come to us when living at home has become difficult, and our aim is simply that life carries on in the way each person wants it to, with the practical help they need quietly in place around them. We provide residential care for adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, and people with physical disabilities or with sight and hearing loss. Because those needs sit differently in every person, we spend time at the beginning learning how someone likes their day to run, what they can manage themselves, and where they would rather we stepped in. We also support people with eating disorders, where patience, consistency and a calm approach at mealtimes matter more than anything else we could offer. Respite stays are an important part of what we do. Sometimes a family carer needs a fortnight to rest, or someone wants to try us out before making a longer decision, and a planned short stay gives everyone room to think. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that and we treat it as a floor rather than a ceiling, because the things residents notice most are small and daily: a familiar face on shift, a cup of tea made properly, and being asked rather than told.

Blenheim Care Home is a residential care home in Walton On The Naze providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, and people with loss of sight or hearing. We should be plain about our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, which is requires improvement. We would rather tell you ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. We know which areas were identified and there is a clear programme of work under way, with changes already made to staff supervision and training, to how care is recorded, and to how families are involved in decisions. Please ask us about it when you come, and we will show you what has changed and what is still in hand. The daily work of the home continues as it should: careful help with washing and dressing, meals cooked here, attention to nutrition, skin and mobility, and safe management of medication. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar, and for people with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate. Respite stays are available. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to ask.

Here at Lyons Court Residential Care Home in Chelmsford, Essex, we offer a genuine home from home for the people who live with us. We believe that good care starts with truly knowing each person, understanding their history, their preferences and what matters most to them day to day. We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, younger adults, and those living with physical disabilities or visual and hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers a well earned break. Whatever brings someone to us, we aim to make the transition as smooth and as comfortable as possible. Our team works hard to create an atmosphere that feels warm and unhurried. We take the time to sit with residents, to listen, and to involve them in decisions about their own care. Families are always welcome here and we encourage them to remain as involved as they wish to be. We know how much it means to feel confident that your loved one is in safe hands, and we do not take that trust lightly. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good, which we feel reflects the genuine commitment of everyone who works here. That said, we are always looking at how we can do better and we welcome feedback from residents and families as part of that process. If you are considering Lyons Court for yourself or for someone close to you, we would be very happy to have a conversation or arrange a visit. We find that coming to see us in person gives the clearest picture of who we are and how we work.

Aspen Grange Care Home is in Braintree and we provide both residential and nursing care under one roof. That matters to the people who live here, because it means that if someone's health needs change over time they do not have to move somewhere unfamiliar. Nurses are on duty day and night. Most of our residents are older people, and many are living with dementia. For them we keep the day calm and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take time to understand what somebody means when speech has become difficult. Rushing a person with dementia never saves anybody time, so we plan on the basis that things take as long as they take. Nursing lets us manage medication, wound and pressure care and conditions that need close monitoring here, and somebody who becomes unwell is seen straight away rather than waiting for an appointment. But nursing is the foundation, not the purpose. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who comes to visit, and meals are cooked here with nobody hurried along. Respite stays are available, both for people needing support for a short period after a hospital admission and for family carers who need a genuine break. Families are welcome here and we would rather hear a concern early. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

Woodbury Court is a residential care home in Laindon. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who live with sight or hearing loss, and we take respite bookings for short stays. Our aim is a home where needing help with some things does not mean losing control over everything else. People choose when to get up, how they spend the day and how much company they want. Where somebody needs support with washing, dressing or moving about safely, we provide it without making the rest of their life a matter for negotiation. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings calm and familiar and we take our lead from the person rather than correcting them. Where somebody has sight or hearing loss, we make sure information genuinely reaches them, and we do not let a communication difficulty turn into being left out of conversations about their own care. Meals are cooked here and we take an interest in what people actually enjoy. Families are welcome without appointments or formality, and we would rather they visited often. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to look round, come and see the home on an ordinary day and judge it as it really is.

Mirabeau is a small residential home in Witham. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays. Being small is the point rather than a limitation. This is a house and it feels like one. People have their own space and their own belongings, and the household is run with the people who live in it rather than around them. Meals, shopping, laundry and how the place looks are all decisions people take part in, because independence grows out of doing things rather than being told about them. We plan support around what each person wants from their life rather than around a timetable that suits the rota. That might be help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and flag changes well in advance, because unexpected change is usually the hardest part. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them well. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand so the house is familiar when they arrive. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to look round.

Here at Hope House, we offer residential care for people who need a safe, supportive and genuinely homely place to live. We are based in Halstead, Essex, and we welcome younger adults who may have a learning disability, autism, or a visual or hearing impairment. We also provide respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements, whether that is planned in advance or at short notice. We understand that choosing the right care setting is one of the most important decisions a person or their family will ever make. That is why we try to be straightforward and open from the very first conversation. When someone moves into Hope House, we take time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how they prefer to live their day to day life. Care is not one size fits all, and we do not treat it as though it is. Our team works closely with residents, families and professionals to make sure that support is tailored and that people feel genuinely heard. We know that for many of our residents, communication may look different, so we put real thought into how we listen and how we respond. Whether someone uses spoken language, signs, symbols or other means of communication, we make sure their voice shapes their care. Life at Hope House is about more than just meeting care needs. We want people to feel comfortable, to have fun, to maintain their relationships, and to keep doing the things they enjoy. We are proud of the warm atmosphere we have built here, and we are always working to make Hope House somewhere people are genuinely glad to call home. If you would like to find out more or arrange a visit, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are always happy to talk.

We are a small residential care home on Ipswich Road in Colchester, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a genuine break while the person staying with us has company and a change of surroundings. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. People here have their own rooms, their own routines and a real say in how the day goes. Support is about making ordinary things possible rather than doing them for people. Cooking a meal you like. Doing your own shopping. Managing money and appointments. Getting to a club, a course or a job. Seeing family and friends when you want to. We pay close attention to that distinction, because independence is easily eroded by help that arrives in too much of a hurry. Communication matters a great deal here. Not everybody uses many words, and understanding a person properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected rather than assumptions. Plans are written with the person, reviewed honestly and changed when they no longer fit, and we work alongside families and social work and health colleagues so that support is joined up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and privacy, where any home can drift without noticing. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Humfrey Lodge is a residential care home at Thaxted in Essex. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. For residents living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the surroundings unchanged, and we ask relatives early for the history, because it gets much harder to gather later. Where a resident communicates differently, whether through sight, hearing or anything else, we settle that properly at the start and everybody uses the same approach. Being in a village means residents who have lived here for decades know the place far better than we do, and that makes for conversation worth having. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome unannounced, and they often notice what we have stopped seeing.

We provide a permanent home for older people and for younger adults, we support residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a rest. What we aim for is ordinary life, well supported. That means people getting up when they want to, eating food they actually like, keeping up with the things and the people that matter to them, and having help at hand without it taking over. For residents living with dementia it also means consistency: familiar faces, a steady rhythm to the day, and staff who know a person's history well enough to make sense of what they are telling us. We want to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We have taken the findings seriously, we are working through what was identified, and we would rather a family asked us directly what has changed than took a rating on a website as the whole story. Anyone considering Brook House for a relative is welcome to come and look properly, at a time that suits them, and to speak to the people who live and work here. We think that tells you more than any description we could write, including this one.

We are a residential home at Wash Lane in Clacton on Sea, supporting adults with a range of needs. The people who live here include younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. The house is run as a household rather than a service. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them. For adults who have often had decisions taken on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is central to what we are trying to do. Support is arranged around the individual rather than around a category. For some the priority is staying well and having staff nearby who know them well enough to notice when things are becoming difficult. For others it is about doing more: work, college, volunteering, managing money with a hand from us, or getting out regularly and keeping up with family. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can and explain changes before they happen. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission and are happy to discuss that openly. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

New Partnerships Lynray and Peach Cottage is a residential care home in Braintree supporting younger adults living with a learning disability, autism or a physical disability. We are two houses working closely together, which lets us keep each one small and settled while sharing the skills and cover of a larger team. The people we support live here. That sounds obvious, but it shapes everything: it is their home, their choice of room, their routine, their visitors and their front door. Our job is to provide the support that makes those choices workable, whether that is help with personal care and mobility, support to communicate, or someone alongside for the things that would otherwise be out of reach. We put a lot into knowing people well. Understanding what someone is telling us when they cannot tell us in words, noticing when a familiar behaviour is really pain or frustration, and adjusting what we do rather than restricting what they do. Braintree and the wider Essex area give us plenty to get out for, and time beyond the house is part of normal life. We also offer respite, giving families a planned break with people who prepare properly for a short stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We are not going to gloss over that. We have taken the findings seriously, we have an improvement plan in place, and we are happy to talk openly with families about what is changing and how quickly. • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Being near the sea has its uses, and a walk or a change of view is part of ordinary life here when the weather allows. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come. The Laurels is a residential care home in Wickford, caring for older people and younger adults, including a good number of residents living with dementia. We aim to be an unremarkable sort of place in the best sense, where the day runs comfortably, the food is good and the staff know everybody properly. We do not hurry people. Residents get up and go to bed when it suits them, and support with washing and dressing is given at a pace that respects the person receiving it. Meals matter a great deal here, both because eating well keeps people stronger and because a shared table is often the sociable high point of the day. For residents with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. Consistent staff, a steady routine, and time spent learning a person's history mean we can usually understand what is behind a worry and put it right. Rooms are personalised with people's own belongings, which helps enormously with settling in. Relatives are welcome whenever they can come, and we would much rather families told us about a concern straight away than sat on it. We also offer respite stays, which give family carers a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors considering a move are welcome to look round and ask us anything.

Agility Care is a residential care home in Chelmsford supporting adults with a range of needs, including older people and younger adults, people with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with a physical disability. Our starting point is the person rather than the diagnosis. We take time at the outset to understand how somebody likes their day to run, what they can manage themselves, where they want help and what makes things go wrong, and we plan the support from there. That plan is reviewed properly, because needs change and support that is never revisited slowly stops fitting. Day to day, staff provide help with personal care, with moving about safely, with medication and with meals, and they are trained for the specific needs of the people they support. Where somebody communicates differently, we learn how and we make sure that the choices we offer are genuine. People here are supported to have a life beyond the building, keeping up interests and activities, getting out into Chelmsford and staying in touch with family and friends. Respite and short stays can be arranged where they are appropriate. If you are looking for a placement or a short stay in Essex, please contact us and come and see us.

    • Care Home

Redbond Lodge provides residential care in Great Dunmow for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. We try to make this feel like a home rather than somewhere people have been placed. Residents get up when they want, spend their days as they choose, keep their own belongings about them and have visitors whenever it suits them. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals and the practical running of the place, and they do it in a way that leaves people as much say as possible over their own lives. The small things are what residents notice. A familiar face on shift, tea made the way you like it, being asked rather than told, and somebody spotting that you are not quite yourself today. For residents living with dementia, and for anybody with sight or hearing loss, that sort of familiarity matters far more than a crowded programme of activities. Respite stays are worth mentioning in their own right. They give family carers a genuine rest, and they let somebody find out what we are like before making any bigger decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on the answers.

    • Care Home

Loganberry Lodge is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. The care we give is residential rather than nursing. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For most people that combination works well and leaves their independence largely intact. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces turning up and surroundings that are easy to make sense of will settle somebody more surely than any programme of activities. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what allows us to understand them when words become difficult. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around. Somebody who cannot follow what is going on will withdraw, and withdrawal is too easily mistaken for decline. Respite and short stays are available, for planned breaks and for recovery after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to come and look round Loganberry Lodge.

    • Care Home

Ridgewell House is a residential care home in Clacton on Sea. We support older people who need help with daily life but not nursing care, including people living with dementia, and we take respite bookings as well as permanent places. We should deal with the rating first, because you will have seen it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to argue with it or bury it at the foot of a page. An inspection finds what it finds, and the work of putting it right belongs to us. We have an action plan, the people who commission care from us know exactly where we have got to with it, and we would far rather walk you through that in person than offer you a paragraph written to reassure. What has not changed is the ordinary business of the home. Clacton is a seaside town and a good many of the people living here have known it all their lives, which gives the lounge plenty of common ground. We help people wash and dress, manage their medicines, eat properly and get outside. For residents with dementia we keep routines steady and the surroundings familiar, and we do not hurry anybody. If you are considering us for a relative, come and look. Ask the awkward questions, ask to see where we are with the plan, and speak to the families who are already here. We would sooner you decided on what you find than on a rating alone.

What care homes cost in Essex, per week

Residential care Middle half of prices from 44 East homes. Median £1,582.Varies by council£1,421 to £1,708
Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935.Varies by council£1,800 to £2,126

Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940.Not published separately£1,870 to £2,100

Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex

Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.

Setting your criteria before you look

Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.

Using the inspection ratings well

Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.

Getting value from a visit

Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.

Choosing between care homes in Essex

Requesting a care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.

How Essex County Council supports funded places

Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.

Understanding weekly fees

Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex

Which providers offer residential care in Essex?

Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?

Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.

Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?

It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.

How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?

Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
