Something at home has usually stopped working safely before a family begins looking at care homes in Essex, and the search rarely arrives with much warning or much spare time. Essex County Council holds responsibility for the care needs assessment that sets out what support a person requires, and for the financial assessment that follows it, which determines how much of the weekly fee falls to public funds and how much to the family. Three hundred and eleven registered providers are listed on this page, all of them residential care homes, and the ratings attached to them cover the whole scale the Care Quality Commission uses. Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate all appear here, together with homes registered too recently for an inspection to have taken place. That variation is exactly why the profile pages matter. Open the homes that fit your area and your budget, read the inspection report that produced the rating, and let its detail guide what you ask when you first walk through the door.

Yarra Respite is a care home in Colchester, Essex, offering respite stays for adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults. Some people also live with us on a longer term basis. Respite is its own kind of work and we try to treat it that way. A short stay can be unsettling if it is handled as a bed to be filled, so we spend time before somebody arrives finding out how they like things done, what reassures them, what they want to bring with them and what would make the stay feel manageable rather than strange. For the family carer having the break, knowing that has been thought about properly is most of the reassurance. While people are here they have their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the day goes. Support is about keeping ordinary life going rather than putting it on hold, so we help people get out, keep up with activities and stay in touch with family and friends. We pay close attention to how people communicate, which is not always through words, and we take the time needed to understand rather than assume. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and privacy. If you are considering respite for yourself or someone in your family, please get in touch or come and visit.

Ardtully Retirement Residence is a residential care home in Ingatestone. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. We would rather be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and anybody considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still to be put right. We would think less of a family that did not ask. What we are aiming for day to day is a settled household where people are known. Residents keep their own routines, furnish their rooms as they wish and decide how much they want to join in. Where somebody needs help with moving about, personal care or eating, our staff are trained to give it without hurrying or making a performance of it. Dementia support rests on familiarity and pace. Where sight or hearing is failing we pay attention to lighting, contrast, signage and sound, and we check that glasses and hearing aids are being used and looked after. Supporting mental health needs means consistency and working alongside community teams. Families are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round and judge the place for yourself.

- Care Home
Braintree Mews Care Home is a residential care home in Braintree, Essex. We look after older people who need help through the day, including many living with dementia, people with a physical disability, and people who are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing. Some of the people living with us are younger adults, and respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Running a home with that spread of need takes more thought than running one where everybody is alike, because no single routine will do. So we work out what each person's day ought to look like and then make the house fit around it rather than the other way round. Where sight or hearing has gone, a building that is hard to read shrinks a person's confidence, so we pay attention to light, contrast, noise, signage and the way staff approach somebody rather than simply arriving at their side. For residents with dementia we keep life predictable and surroundings familiar. Where a physical disability is involved the work is often about equipment, patience and allowing time. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visit without an appointment if you would rather, and we would honestly prefer it.

Here at Four Winds, we are a care home based in Colchester, Essex, and we are proud to provide a warm, supportive environment where the people who live with us feel genuinely at home. We support a range of individuals across our home, including older people, younger adults, and those living with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite care for those who need a short stay, whether that is to give a family member or carer some time to rest, or simply to offer someone a change of surroundings with the right level of support in place. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and that means a great deal to us. We do not take that rating for granted. It reflects the effort and thoughtfulness that goes into everyday life here, from the way we plan care around each person as an individual, to the way we talk with families and make sure they always feel informed and involved. What we try to get right, above all else, is the feel of the place. We want Four Winds to feel like a real home rather than a facility. That means listening carefully to what matters to each person, respecting their routines and preferences, and making sure they have choice and a sense of control over their own daily lives. We work closely with families, health professionals, and local community organisations to make sure the support we offer is joined up and responsive. If you are looking for care for yourself or someone you love, we would always encourage you to come and visit us, have a look around, and ask us whatever questions you have. We are happy to talk things through at whatever pace feels right for you.

Rowland House is a residential care home in Harwich, Essex, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and people with a physical disability, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we try hard to run it that way. People have their own rooms, their own routines and a real say in how their days go. Support here is about making ordinary things possible rather than doing them for people. Cooking a meal you actually want. Doing your own shopping. Managing money and appointments. Getting to a club, a course or a job. Keeping in touch with family and friends. We pay attention to that distinction, because independence is quietly worn away by help that arrives too quickly. Communication matters a great deal to us. Not everybody here uses many words, and understanding somebody properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected rather than assumptions. Plans are written with the person, reviewed honestly and changed when they stop fitting. We also work alongside families and with social work and health colleagues so that support is joined up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and independence, where any provider can drift. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Silverpoint Court Residential Care Home is a care home on Canvey Island supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. The emphasis here is on daily life rather than clinical routine. Meals, company, familiar habits, visitors coming and going, time outside and something in the day worth getting up for, with practical help around washing, dressing, medication and mobility fitted in where it is needed. We plan from somebody's life so far. What the work was, who the people are, what a normal week used to look like, what they have never been able to abide. Care built from that fits the person, and it makes a real difference to how settled they become in the early weeks, which tends to shape everything afterwards. For people living with dementia we work with familiarity and go alongside the person rather than correcting them. Where somebody is unsettled we look first for a cause we can put right, whether that is pain, noise, boredom or simply needing the toilet. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We would rather set that out ourselves than have you come across it later. We accept what the inspection found, there is an improvement plan we are working through, and we will answer questions about progress plainly, including where the work is not finished. Please come and look round on an ordinary day, and ask us the difficult questions.

- Care Home
Hazel Villa is a residential care home in Colchester, supporting older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia and residents managing mental health conditions. We are a small home and we like it that way, because the sort of care we want to give depends on knowing people properly. Staff here recognise the small signals that tell them someone is unsettled, and they know what each resident likes, dislikes and worries about without having to look it up. The day runs comfortably rather than to a timetable. People get up when they are ready, eat food cooked here that is worth looking forward to, and spend their time in company or quietly as they prefer. Support with washing and dressing is given calmly and with dignity. For residents living with dementia, we keep routines familiar and take real trouble to learn a person's earlier life, because that knowledge is usually what allows us to settle someone who is anxious and makes ordinary conversation better too. Relatives are welcome throughout the day and we would much rather hear a concern from you early than discover it late. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Joseph Lodge is a residential care home in Southend on Sea. We support older people needing help with daily living, including those living with dementia, those living with mental health conditions, those with a physical disability and those whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. Our work is the practical daily sort: helping people wash and dress, managing medication properly, cooking here, supporting people to move about safely and having staff available through the night. What we try hardest to get right is the manner of it, because being helped with intimate things should feel ordinary and unhurried rather than clinical. For residents living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the faces familiar. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings where they are expected, approach people so as not to startle them and check we have been understood. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support somebody recovering after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families along the Essex coast are welcome to visit. Please ring and we will arrange a time to show you round.

We are based in Loughton, Essex, and we welcome residents from the local area and beyond. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure every person who lives here feels safe, respected and genuinely at home. We take time to get to know each resident as an individual, understanding their routines, their preferences and what matters most to them day to day. Our dementia care is something we give a great deal of thought to. We recognise that living with dementia affects not just the individual but everyone around them, and we work closely with families to provide support that feels joined up and consistent. For those who come to us for respite care, we try to make the transition as smooth and comfortable as possible, whether the stay is for a few weeks or a little longer. We are open about the fact that our most recent CQC inspection rated us as requires improvement. We have taken that feedback seriously and are working through the areas identified with a clear focus and a practical plan. Here at Freda Gunton Lodge, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Colchester, Essex. We are a care home that takes pride in offering a genuinely homely environment where residents feel comfortable, valued and very much at ease. We take the time to understand each resident as an individual, getting to know their routines, their preferences and the things that matter most to them day to day. Respite care is something we approach with particular thought. We understand that coming into a care home, even temporarily, can feel like a big step. Our aim is to make that transition as smooth and reassuring as possible, so that both residents and their families feel confident and well supported throughout. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in an overall rating of Good. While we are proud of that recognition, we see it as a reflection of the consistent, everyday effort our team puts in rather than something to simply rest on. Longwood Place is a residential care home in Langdon Hill, and we support adults with a range of needs, including people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or autism, and those with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment. Our starting point with anybody who comes to live here is a simple one. What does an ordinary good day look like for you, and what would you like to carry on doing yourself? The answers vary enormously, and so does the support that follows. Some people want a great deal of company and structure, others prefer their own room and their own company for much of the day, and both are entirely reasonable. Communication is something we take seriously. Where someone has a sensory impairment or finds speech difficult, we adapt to the person rather than expecting the person to adapt to us, and we make sure that everyone working here knows how a resident prefers to be approached. For people living with dementia we keep routines familiar and the pace gentle, and we work with families to learn the details that make a difference, from an old occupation to a favourite piece of music. We also offer respite stays for planned breaks and short term support. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Southminster Residential Home is a care home in Southminster, Essex, looking after older people including many living with dementia. We also take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks rather than a permanent place. We run a homely, unhurried place. People get up when they choose, keep their own things around them, eat food worth sitting down to and spend the day as suits them. There is company and something going on for those who want it, and a quiet corner for those who would rather have their own. For people living with dementia, consistency does most of the work. Familiar staff, a predictable routine, calm surroundings and time given instead of rushed. We learn about people's earlier lives so conversation has something to hold on to, and where somebody becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than reaching for a label. Our staff know the people living here well, which is what makes it possible to notice quickly when somebody is not their usual self and to act with the GP or district nurse before a small problem grows. Being a village home, we also stay connected to the community around us rather than turning inwards. Families are welcome whenever suits them. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please ring if you would like to look round.

St Marks Residential Care Home is in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We care for older adults, including many people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Living well with dementia depends heavily on the ordinary parts of the day being got right. Surroundings that are calm and easy to make sense of, a routine that holds steady, unhurried time, and staff who know a person's history well enough to understand what they mean when the words are not coming. That is where we put our effort, and it is why we ask families for so much detail at the beginning about a person's life, work, family and tastes. People here keep their own belongings around them, have a say in how the day goes, and see visitors when it suits everybody rather than at set hours. Help with washing, dressing, medication and meals is given without fuss and without taking over more than is needed. Respite is available for short stays, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to help somebody get back on their feet after hospital. Butterfly's Care Home is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex, supporting adults who need help with everyday living in a place that feels like a home rather than a unit. The people who live here are a varied group. Some are older adults who need help with personal care, mobility and medication. Some have a learning disability or are autistic. Others are managing mental health conditions or living with a physical disability, and we support younger adults as well as older people. What holds it together is treating everyone as an individual with their own history, preferences and opinions. We start with the person. We find out how they communicate, what they want help with, what they would rather do for themselves and what matters enough to be worth protecting. Support plans are written with them, and with families or advocates where that is wanted, and we revisit them as circumstances change. We also offer respite stays, giving family carers a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and properly staffed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that, though what we watch most closely is whether the people living here are content with their days. If you would like to visit, please get in touch and we will arrange a time. Come and look round, meet the staff and ask us whatever you want to know before deciding anything.

Here at Seaview, we are a care home based in Colchester, Essex, and we are proud to support the people who live with us every single day. Our focus is on residential care, supporting individuals with learning disabilities and autism, and providing respite care for those who need a short break or a planned period of support away from home. We understand that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is a significant decision. We do not take that trust lightly. From the moment someone walks through our door, we want them to feel that this is a place where they genuinely belong, where their voice is heard and their individuality is respected. No two people are the same, and we work hard to make sure that the support we offer reflects each person's own preferences, routines and goals. For those we support who have a learning disability or are autistic, we know how important consistency and understanding are. We work closely with each person and their family or carers to build a picture of what good support looks like for them specifically, and we adjust how we work accordingly. Our respite care offer is something we are particularly pleased to provide. Whether it is planned or at short notice, we aim to make every stay feel settled and comfortable rather than unsettling or temporary. We were rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission at our most recent inspection, which reflects the commitment of our whole team to providing support that is safe, caring, responsive and well led. If you would like to find out more about Seaview or come and have a look around, please do get in touch. We are always happy to have a conversation.

The Bungalow in Colchester is a residential care home supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, those with sight or hearing loss, younger adults and older people. We also offer respite stays. Only a few people live here, which is deliberate. It means staff know everybody properly and the house runs at the pace of those in it rather than to a rota. People choose how their rooms look, take part in shopping, cooking and keeping the place going as much as they want to and are able to, and get out to what they enjoy in and around Colchester. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a regular club, that belongs in the support plan. The work turns on detail and consistency. How much noise a room holds. Whether a change of staff or plan has been flagged days in advance. Which way of communicating genuinely reaches a person. Where somebody has a physical disability, equipment and layout are set up to help them do things for themselves rather than getting in the way. We keep the staff team consistent and work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues, and we welcome being challenged when we have misread something. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors and referrers are welcome.

Boars Tye House is a residential care home in Witham, Essex. We support older people, including residents living with dementia, adults with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and those with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite care for planned short stays. We try to keep the home feeling like a home rather than an institution. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, where they spend their time and how much they join in with what is going on. Before anyone moves in we spend time with them and with their family, because the small details are what make the difference to how quickly somebody settles. Dementia support runs through the whole house rather than being kept to one side. We keep surroundings familiar, we avoid rushing people, and we take the time to understand what settles a particular resident instead of applying a single approach to everybody. The same care goes into supporting residents with sensory impairment, where how we speak, where we stand and how a room is arranged can change someone's day entirely. Meals are proper meals and we take note of what people actually enjoy. Company is offered rather than imposed, and a resident who wants a quiet afternoon in their own room is not a problem to be solved. Respite stays are planned with the same thought as a permanent move, whether a carer needs a break or a family wants to try the home first. Visitors are welcome. If you would like to look round, please contact us.

Bings Hall is a residential care home near Dunmow in Essex, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, along with respite stays for shorter periods. We aim to be a household rather than an institution, and most of that comes down to detail that is easy to overlook. What time you like to get up. Whether you want company at meals or would rather sit with the paper in peace. Which chair is yours. We help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do it quietly, leaving as much privacy and as much choice with the resident as possible. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, they do. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time rather than hurrying them along, and take trouble to learn about a resident's earlier life, because knowing that someone farmed, or taught, or always liked the wireless on in the morning is genuinely useful information in our hands. Families usually hold that story, and we ask for it. Respite bookings are planned with the same care as permanent moves, because a break is only restful if the person at home is properly settled. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary day, have a cup of tea with us, and ask whatever you like.

Read House is a residential care home at Frinton on Sea in Essex. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, for younger adults who need a supportive household, for people with physical disabilities and for people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available too. What we aim for is an ordinary life with help attached rather than a routine that everybody has to fit. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, whether they want company or quiet, and what they would like to eat. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing only as much as somebody actually needs, because taking over is easy and rarely useful. For residents with physical disabilities, our attention goes to equipment that fits properly, transfers managed safely and without embarrassment, and keeping as much independence as somebody wants. For those living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication and a thoughtfully arranged environment make most of the difference, and we take time over both. Getting out matters as well. Being near the sea is worth something, and we would rather support somebody to go where they want to go than fill an afternoon with activities chosen on their behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone considering Read House is welcome to visit on an ordinary day and ask us whatever they like.

At Aveley Lodge, we provide residential and dementia care for older people in a warm and homely setting in Colchester, Essex. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which we feel reflects the genuine effort and thoughtfulness our team brings to every aspect of daily life here. We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, both for the person coming to live with us and for their family. We take that responsibility seriously. From the moment someone comes through our door, we focus on getting to know them as an individual — their routines, their preferences, the things that matter most to them — so that the care we provide feels personal rather than routine. For those living with dementia, we know how important familiarity, consistency and a calm environment can be. We work hard to create a setting where residents feel safe and orientated, and where families feel confident that their loved one is truly known and looked after, not simply managed. Life at Aveley Lodge is about more than meeting care needs. We want residents to feel at home, to enjoy their days, and to maintain connections with the people and things they love. Whether that means a quiet cup of tea and a chat, joining in with activities, or simply having space to rest, we follow the lead of each person we support. We are always happy to welcome prospective residents and their families for a visit so that you can see for yourselves what daily life is like here. We believe the best way to understand who we are is simply to come and spend a little time with us. Please do get in touch — we would love to hear from you.

Here at The Firs, we are a residential care home nestled in the coastal town of Frinton on Sea, Essex. We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need short term support or whose family carers need a well earned break. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or their family will ever make, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure everyone who lives here feels safe, respected, and genuinely at home. We take the time to understand each person as an individual, learning about their routines, preferences, and the things that matter most to them, so that the care and support we provide fits around their life rather than the other way around. Frinton on Sea is a wonderfully calm and welcoming place, and we feel that setting reflects the atmosphere we try to create within The Firs itself. There is a real sense of community here, both within our walls and in the wider town, and we work hard to make sure the people we support can remain connected to the things and people they love. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which we see as a reflection of the consistent, thoughtful approach our whole team brings to their work each day. That said, we never stand still. We are always looking at how we can do better and listening to the people we support and their loved ones to make sure we are getting things right. Rowans is a residential care home in Tiptree supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. People choose how their rooms look, what they eat, when they get up and how much of the day they spend in company. Those choices are most of what makes a place worth living in, and they take steady effort to protect when staff change and pressures build. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than only around risk. Cooking, shopping, managing money, using transport, getting to activities, college or work, and keeping up with family and friends. Where somebody needs a great deal of help, we still look hard for the parts they can take on themselves. Where a person has a physical disability we think properly about equipment and access, and about not helping more than is wanted. Where sight or hearing is reduced, we keep things where people expect to find them and adjust how we approach and speak to somebody. We learn how each person communicates, including those who use little or no speech, and we pay attention to noise, lighting and predictability. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch to visit.

We are 21 Mill Lane, a residential care home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities, including those living with sight or hearing loss, along with older people who need help with daily living. Support here is built around the person. We start with how somebody communicates, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want to be able to do, and we write the plan from there. Some people need help with most of the day and others need very little, and both deserve the same thought in the planning. The building and the routine matter too. Accessible spaces, clear layouts, quiet areas and a predictable shape to the day remove a great deal of unnecessary difficulty, particularly for autistic residents and for anyone who tires easily. For people living with mental health conditions we plan for the harder periods as well as the settled ones. Life here should look like life anywhere else. People go out, see family and friends, choose their own activities and keep up interests they had before moving in. Respite stays are available so that families can take a planned break. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Our specialisms reflect the genuine breadth of need we see in older age. For those requiring residential care, we offer steady, attentive support with the everyday tasks that can become more challenging over time, always delivered in a way that protects dignity and independence. Our dementia care is rooted in understanding the person behind the diagnosis, with familiar faces, calm environments, and tailored daily routines that help reduce anxiety and promote moments of joy. For residents living with a physical disability, we focus on enabling care that maximises comfort, mobility, and confidence. We also welcome guests for respite care, offering families peace of mind during holidays, recovery periods, or simply a well earned break from caring responsibilities. What this means in practice is that every resident is treated as an individual. Care plans are shaped around the person, their history, their preferences, and the things that bring meaning to their day. Families are kept closely involved, because we believe good care is a partnership built on trust, openness, and shared understanding. We are pleased to hold an overall Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, with particular recognition through an Outstanding rating for being well led. For families, this matters. It reflects a culture where leadership sets a clear tone of compassion, accountability, and continuous improvement, and where staff feel supported to deliver the safe, effective, caring, and responsive standards that families rightly expect. An Outstanding well led judgement is not easily earned, and we remain committed to upholding and building on the standards that brought us this recognition. If you are exploring care options for a loved one, we understand how emotional and significant this decision can be. We warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and discover whether Halstead Hall Care Home could be the right next chapter for your family. Herondale is a residential care home in Basildon, Essex. Those living here include older people, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, and people whose lives have been affected by alcohol or drug use. We are home to younger adults as well, and respite stays are part of what we do. A household this mixed asks a great deal of a staff team, and attitude counts as much as skill. Several of the people living here have been judged rather than helped in the past, and staff who arrive with opinions about how somebody came to need support are of no use to them at all. We recruit and supervise with that squarely in mind. One routine will not suit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person. For some that is company and something going on, and for others it is their own room and being left alone, which we treat as an equally reasonable choice. Where somebody can do a thing themselves we support them to keep at it even when stepping in would be quicker. On a busy morning that takes discipline, and it is the difference between supporting a person and gradually deskilling them. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we tell them plainly when we cannot do something and why.

We at 43a and 43b Morley Road are proud to offer a welcoming residential care home in the heart of Colchester, Essex, where personalised support meets genuine warmth. Our home provides thoughtful residential care for adults with a wide range of needs, fostering independence, dignity, and a true sense of belonging. Set within a familiar community setting in Colchester's CO postcode area, our home benefits from the calm, neighbourly feel of Morley Road. Residents enjoy the reassurance of being part of an established local community, with all the everyday comforts and connections that brings. Our care reflects the diverse needs of the people we support. We specialise in caring for older people, younger adults, and individuals living with learning disabilities or autism, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. In practice, this means we take time to truly understand each resident as an individual, tailoring daily routines, communication approaches, and activities to suit their preferences and abilities. Whether someone needs gentle encouragement to maintain their independence, specialist support with sensory needs, or companionship through the changes that ageing can bring, our approach remains person centred and respectful at every step. Families can feel confident that their loved one is recognised for who they are, not defined by a diagnosis or label. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission, carried out in September 2021, awarded us a rating of Good across every domain assessed: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This consistent recognition reflects the standards we hold ourselves to every single day, from the safety of our environment to the responsiveness of our team and the quality of leadership guiding our home. For families, it offers an independent reassurance that the care provided here meets the expectations they rightly hold for someone they love. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. If you are exploring options for yourself or a relative in the Colchester area, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and discover whether 43a and 43b Morley Road could be the right place to call home. It is quieter than some homes, conversation flows easily, and a lot of our residents say they feel more comfortable and more themselves here than they expected to. We run the house at the pace of the people living in it. Mornings are flexible, meals are proper meals, and residents choose how they spend their days, in company or on their own as they prefer. Staff learn people's histories, their families, their working lives and the things they still care about, because good care depends on knowing a person rather than a set of needs. Moving into a care home usually follows a loss of some kind, often a house lived in for decades. We take time over settling in, we arrange rooms with people's own furniture and pictures where we can, and we do not expect anyone to feel at home by the second week. Respite guests receive exactly what permanent residents receive. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you would like to look round, please get in touch and come and see us on an ordinary day.

Longfield is a residential care home in Maldon supporting older people, including many living with dementia, and we welcome respite guests. Maldon is a small town and our home has the feel of one. Staff know residents and their families properly, often over years, and nothing happens at speed for the sake of it. People get up when they wake, eat what they fancy and spend the day as they choose. Dementia care is a large part of our work and we approach it patiently. We keep routines familiar, the building calm and the staffing consistent, and we take our lead from the person rather than pulling them into our version of things. When somebody is distressed we treat it as a message with a cause behind it, and go looking for that cause rather than for a way to stop the behaviour. Relatives often know exactly what helps, and we would far rather ask them than guess. We also work hard at keeping ordinary life going. Proper meals, time outside when the weather allows, music that means something to the person and conversation that follows their interests. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break, and the person staying receives exactly what a permanent resident receives. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you would like to look round, please get in touch.

Our home provides specialised residential and dementia care for older people, alongside thoughtful support for younger adults and those living with mental health needs. Our care approach is built around the individual. For older residents, we focus on maintaining dignity, independence, and quality of life, ensuring that daily routines reflect personal preferences and lifelong habits. For those living with dementia, we provide a consistent, reassuring environment where familiar faces and gentle structure help to reduce anxiety and promote moments of joy. Our experience supporting adults with mental health needs, as well as younger adults, means we understand that every person's journey is different, and we tailor our support accordingly. In practice, this means listening carefully to residents and families, building trusting relationships, and creating care plans that evolve as needs change. Families can take genuine reassurance from our CQC rating of Good across every domain, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led, following our latest inspection in April 2022. This consistent rating reflects a culture of dedication, accountability, and warmth that runs through every aspect of our home, giving relatives confidence that their loved ones are in capable and caring hands. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. If you are exploring care options in Colchester or the wider Essex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Colne House to learn more about how we can support your loved one with kindness, respect, and genuine understanding.

Stanway Villa is a residential care home in Colchester supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including people living with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays. This is a home rather than a service, and we try to keep that distinction real. People have their own rooms and their own things, they take part in decisions about how the house runs, and they are supported to do as much for themselves as they want to. Cooking, shopping, managing money and getting out locally are done together rather than done for people. Communication is the foundation of everything. Some of the people who live here use speech, others use signs, symbols or gestures, and others show us what they need in ways that take time and patience to learn. We put that time in, and we make sure information about someone's own life reaches them in a form they can use. We pay close attention to sensory needs and to the practical business of getting around the building safely and independently, since both have a large effect on how much of the day belongs to the person. Routines are steady here, and changes are planned and explained well in advance. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. - Care Home
Kilkee Lodge Residential Home is a care home in Braintree supporting older people. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, so the shape of the day here is domestic. Meals, company, familiar routines, visitors, time outside and something worth getting up for, with practical help around washing, dressing, medication and moving about fitted in where it is needed. Our approach starts with somebody's life so far. What the work was, who matters, what a normal week used to look like, what they have never been able to stand. Care planned from that fits the person, and it makes a real difference to how settled somebody becomes early on, which tends to shape everything afterwards. We try hard to keep choice in the day. People sit where they like, eat what they actually want, see visitors when it suits them and are not moved along to fit a staff routine. We also take respite bookings, giving family carers a properly planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We are not going to leave you to discover that elsewhere. We accept what was found, we are working through an improvement plan, and we will give you a straight answer about where we have got to if you ask, including the parts still outstanding. If you are considering a care home in Braintree, please come and look round on an ordinary day.

Madelayne Court is a residential care home in Chelmsford, Essex. We support older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, people with a physical disability and those with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite care for planned short stays. Moving into a care home is a considerable thing to ask of anyone, so we try to make the practical side of it calm and unhurried. Before somebody arrives we spend time with them and with the people who know them best, because it is the small details that decide how quickly a person settles. How they take their tea. Whether they are early risers. What work they did. Who they want to hear from. All of that shapes how we support them from the first day rather than sitting unread in a file. After that, the day belongs to the resident. People choose when to get up, what to eat, where to sit and how much company they want. Meals are proper meals and we take note of what people genuinely enjoy. Company and activity are offered rather than imposed, and someone who wants a quiet afternoon in their own room is not a problem to be solved. Dementia support runs through the whole home. We keep surroundings familiar, avoid rushing anybody, and take time to understand what settles a particular resident. Where somebody has a sensory impairment or a physical disability we adapt how we communicate and how the home is arranged. Respite stays are planned with the same care as a permanent move. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

Blossomwood is a residential care home in Colchester, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are part of what we do. We are a small household and that is the most important thing about us. Everybody is properly known rather than known in outline, staff notice when somebody is off colour without needing it reported, and the house runs around the people in it instead of the reverse. People choose their own rooms, share properly in the shopping and the meals, and have a hand in how the place runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make it possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf, even when the quicker route is tempting on a busy morning. What we are really supporting is a life with something in it: a job, a course, a club, somewhere regular to go. Those are the purpose rather than extras attached to it. We are careful with routine and generous with warning, since for several people here knowing what is happening and who is on shift is what makes a day manageable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change.

Pinetree Care Home is a residential care home in Rayleigh, Essex. We look after older people who need help with day to day living, along with younger adults whose circumstances mean that living independently is no longer workable. Dementia care is central to what we do. We keep the surroundings calm and familiar, we allow time rather than rushing people through the day, and we make sure that staff know each resident's background and habits. Knowing who somebody was tells you a great deal about how to help them now, and it is the difference between care that fits and care that merely gets through the tasks. We want the house to feel like home. Residents bring their own things, keep their own routines, choose how they spend the day and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is always somewhere quiet for anyone who would rather step away from the company. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, for a planned family break or for support while someone recovers after illness. We keep families closely involved, both because they want to be and because what they know about the person is far more useful than any assessment form. Please come and see us at a time that suits you and ask us whatever you need to ask.

Here at Forest Home, we are a residential care home based in Halstead, Essex, and we are proud to be a part of this close knit community. We support older people who need a safe, comfortable and caring place to call home, whether that is on a long term or short term basis. Our team provides residential care and respite care for older people, and we take time to get to know each person individually. We understand that moving into a care home, or arranging a short stay for a loved one, is a significant decision, and we do not take that lightly. Our aim is to make sure everyone who comes through our doors feels genuinely welcome and at ease from the very first day. Respite care is something we offer with real care and thought. We know that family carers sometimes need a break, and we want both the person staying with us and their family to feel confident and reassured throughout that time. We want to be honest with those who are considering Forest Home for themselves or someone they love. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as requiring improvement, and we have taken that feedback seriously. We have been working hard to make meaningful changes, and we are committed to being open about where we are on that journey. We believe families deserve straightforward information so they can make the right choice. Halstead is a town we feel genuinely connected to, and we value the relationships we have built with residents, families and local people over time. If you would like to find out more about what we offer or come and visit us, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with our team directly.

Chignal House is a residential home near Chelmsford supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We try to run this as somebody's home rather than as a service they happen to live inside. The people here have their own routines, their own interests and their own firm views about how the house should work, which is exactly as it should be. Support is built around each person: what they want to do with their time, the help they need to do it, and the parts of life they would rather manage themselves without us hovering. Some people here need a great deal of support and some need very little. Knowing which is which, and being willing to step back, is a large part of doing this job properly. Communication gets close attention from us. So much of what goes wrong in support for autistic people and people with a learning disability comes down to somebody not being understood or not being given enough time. We learn how each person communicates and we work at their pace. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break while offering the person staying a change of scene on their own terms. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to visit and see how the house runs.

Kinglea Court is a residential care home serving people in London and the neighbouring parts of Essex. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run this as a home rather than an institution. Residents bring their own things, keep their own routines and make their own decisions about the shape of the day, and our job is to give the right amount of help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility without taking over what somebody can still manage for themselves. Doing too much is as much a failure of care as doing too little. Dementia care is a substantial part of our work. We spend time learning about each person's life, their habits and the things that settle them, because that is what allows staff to respond to the feeling behind a difficult moment rather than simply to the behaviour. Where a resident has a physical disability we make sure equipment is properly set up and staff use it confidently, and where there is a sensory impairment we adapt how we communicate and keep things where the person expects to find them. Respite stays are planned with the same attention as any other admission. You are very welcome to visit Kinglea Court and see the home on an ordinary day.

Weald Hall is a residential home in Epping, Essex. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and respite stays are part of what we do. A household this mixed means one routine will not fit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person. For some that is company and something going on, and for others it is being left largely alone, which we treat as an equally reasonable preference. Where a resident communicates differently, whether through sight, hearing or anything else, we settle that properly at the start and everybody uses the same approach. It is the thing most often left half finished. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they said so plainly.

Mistley Manor is a residential care home near Manningtree in Essex, supporting older adults and some younger adults. We look after residents living with dementia and residents with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our aim is that people keep as much of their own life as possible when they come here. Their own routines, their own belongings, their own preferences about food and company and how the day should go, and support to carry on doing whatever they can still manage themselves. Taking over is quicker and it is rarely the right answer. For residents with a sensory impairment we pay attention to the practical detail that makes communication work: good lighting, clear contrast, sitting where your face can be seen, and taking the time to be understood rather than hurrying on. Those small adjustments decide whether somebody joins in or gradually withdraws. For residents with dementia, familiarity and an unhurried routine do more good than anything else, and we shape the day around that rather than around the rota. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. You are welcome to come and look round, talk to the people who live here, and ask us anything you would like to know.

Goldenley Care Home is a residential care home in South Benfleet, Essex. We are home to older people, we support residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a short period, whether following a hospital stay or to give a family carer a genuine break. Our aim is an ordinary, settled life with support built quietly around it. Residents keep their own belongings and their own habits, get up and go to bed when they choose, and decide how much of the day they want to spend in company. Meals matter a great deal, so we ask people what they actually enjoy rather than assuming, and we would rather someone looked forward to lunch than merely got through it. Where dementia is part of someone's life, familiarity and patience do most of the work. Staff who know a resident's history can make sense of what they are trying to express, ease a difficult afternoon gently, and offer reassurance that lands properly. We keep the rhythm of the day steady, we give people time, and we treat hurrying as something to avoid rather than as efficiency. Relatives are welcome here without ceremony, and we let families know promptly when something has changed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We hold that standard in the everyday detail, and anyone thinking about a move here is welcome to visit, look properly and ask us whatever they wish.

We are Villeneuve House, a residential care home in Southminster supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. The home works rather like a shared household. People have their own rooms arranged the way they want them, the rest of the house belongs to everybody, and decisions about how things run are made with the people living here rather than for them. Meals get planned together and cooked together where people want to be involved. Support is built around the life each person wants. For some that means a full week of college, work or activities out in the community. For others it means a settled rhythm at home with familiar company. Both are entirely reasonable, and our job is to make either work properly. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, whether that is cooking, handling money or travelling independently, we work at it at their pace and we do not assume a ceiling on anybody. Communication is the foundation of this work. We take time to learn how each person expresses what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure that knowledge is shared with every member of staff. We work closely with families, social workers and health professionals, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please contact us to visit.

Within our walls, we have created an environment that prioritises comfort, dignity, and individuality. Communal areas invite residents to socialise, share a cup of tea, or simply enjoy quiet companionship, whilst private spaces offer a calm retreat whenever rest or reflection is needed. Every corner of the home has been considered with our residents in mind, supporting independence whilst ensuring that help is always close at hand. The care we provide reflects the diverse needs of the people who call Ewer Court home. We support older people who require residential care, adults with learning disabilities or autism, those living with physical disabilities, and individuals with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults who benefit from our specialised approach. In practice, this means our team takes the time to truly understand each resident, building personalised care plans that honour their preferences, routines, and aspirations. For families, this offers the deep reassurance of knowing that a loved one is supported by people who see them as a whole person, not simply a list of needs. Our approach is grounded in respect and partnership. We work closely with families, healthcare professionals, and the wider community to ensure that every resident enjoys a meaningful, stimulating, and safe daily life. Whether that involves supporting someone to maintain a cherished hobby, encouraging social connection, or providing sensitive assistance with daily living, our focus remains on enabling people to live as fully and independently as possible. We are pleased that the Care Quality Commission has rated Ewer Court as Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led. This recognition, awarded following inspection, reflects the consistent commitment of our team to deliver care that is not only of a high standard but also kind, considered, and tailored to the individual. For families exploring care options, this independent assurance offers genuine peace of mind. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that responsibility. If you are considering Ewer Court for yourself or a loved one, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and discover how our community in Colchester could become a place to call home. Our door is always open, and we would be delighted to welcome you.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Essex
Building a shortlist gets easier once you stop setting homes against each other and start measuring each one against what the person moving in actually needs. 316 providers appear in this collection, so a handful of firm priorities will save far more time than an open ended search.
Setting your criteria before you look
Write down the support required day to day, including help with washing and dressing, medication, night time assistance, and whether memory loss or a long term condition shapes the routine. Then add the practical limits: the areas of Essex that relatives can reach easily, how often they expect to visit, and what the household can sustain financially. A home that feels welcoming on a Tuesday afternoon still has to work on a wet Sunday in February, when visitors are fewer and staffing is tighter.
Using the inspection ratings well
Every judgement the Care Quality Commission publishes appears somewhere in this collection, from Outstanding down to Inadequate, plus homes awaiting a first inspection. Clayburn Lodge and Howard Lodge Care Centre both hold Outstanding ratings, while a Good rating confirms a home met the standards the regulator expects across the board. Note how recently the inspection happened and read the detail on safe care, staffing, and how well led the home is, because a rating awarded some time ago may no longer reflect the manager or the team in post today.
Getting value from a visit
Arrange to see the home while something is going on, ideally a mealtime, and pay attention to whether staff speak to residents rather than about them. Ask how many carers work overnight, what the home does when someone falls ill out of hours, and how quickly relatives are contacted. A second unannounced visit at a different time of day is often more revealing than the first appointment.
Choosing between care homes in Essex
Requesting a care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support may ask their local authority for an assessment, whatever their savings and whether or not they intend to pay privately. A practitioner reviews daily living, mobility, medication, memory, and the risks a person faces where they are now, then agrees the level of support needed. Where residential care is the outcome, the resulting plan gives every home a clear statement of what is required, and family members or an independent advocate can take part when someone cannot readily speak for themselves.
How Essex County Council supports funded places
Any contribution from public funds rests on a financial assessment completed by Essex County Council after care needs have been agreed. Capital, savings, and income are all counted, and the result decides whether the council pays towards fees, whether the person meets the cost in full, or whether a deferred payment secured on a property offers a way through. Households who will plainly be funding their own care can still ask the council for information and advice, which is worth doing before signing anything.
Understanding weekly fees
Fees differ between Essex homes depending on the room, the level of personal care agreed, and whether nursing input forms part of the package. Ask for a written schedule showing what the weekly figure covers and what sits outside it, since hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments, and outings are frequently charged separately. If a family picks a home that costs more than the council will fund, a third party contribution is normally expected, and that promise has to hold good for the long term.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Essex
Which providers offer residential care in Essex?
Three hundred and eleven registered care homes across Essex appear on this page, all of them residential settings inspected by the Care Quality Commission. The collection takes in larger homes for older people alongside smaller houses supporting adults with learning disabilities. Each listing links to a profile carrying the provider details and the current rating. Narrowing by area first and then by rating is normally the quickest way to reach a workable shortlist.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides personal care, meaning support with washing, dressing, medication, meals, and the ordinary shape of the day. A nursing home delivers that alongside qualified nursing staff on site, which is what makes the difference where there are wounds to manage, feeding tubes, or a condition that can change quickly. The homes listed on this page are registered to provide residential care. If nursing cover turns out to be necessary, the care needs assessment should say so, and establishing that early avoids wasted visits.
What should we ask when visiting a care home in Essex?
Ask how staffing levels alter overnight and at weekends, and how long the carers on duty have worked in the home. Ask which GP practice covers residents, what happens when someone becomes unwell, and how soon the family is told. Ask to see what activities genuinely ran during the past fortnight rather than a sample programme, and how residents influence them. Then ask precisely what the fee includes and what is billed on top, and request that breakdown in writing.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?
Get in touch with adult social care at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment for the person concerned. It can be arranged at home or on a hospital ward, and no charge is made for it regardless of savings or income. A practitioner will consider daily tasks, mobility, health conditions, and whatever support is already in place, then record what is needed. Where residential care is recommended, that plan becomes the reference point for every home you contact.
Can Essex County Council fund a care home placement?
It can, provided the care needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the whole cost themselves. Capital and income are both taken into account, and the contribution is worked out for the individual rather than from a standard figure. Where the council funds a place, it usually pays up to a level it considers enough to meet the assessed needs, so a top up may be needed for a home priced above that. A deferred payment agreement may also be possible where a property forms part of the picture.
How far ahead should we start looking at care homes?
Several months of notice is the ideal, since it allows for an assessment, unhurried visits, and a decision nobody feels rushed into. Most families in practice begin during a crisis, when the choice has to be made within days. Even in that situation you can ask about a short term placement while you look properly, instead of accepting whatever bed is free. Putting a name down early with homes you like costs nothing and secures a place on the waiting list.
