About Us
Brook House is a residential care home in Colchester. We provide a permanent home for older people and for younger adults, we support residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a rest.
What we aim for is ordinary life, well supported. That means people getting up when they want to, eating food they actually like, keeping up with the things and the people that matter to them, and having help at hand without it taking over. For residents living with dementia it also means consistency: familiar faces, a steady rhythm to the day, and staff who know a person's history well enough to make sense of what they are telling us.
We want to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We have taken the findings seriously, we are working through what was identified, and we would rather a family asked us directly what has changed than took a rating on a website as the whole story.
Anyone considering Brook House for a relative is welcome to come and look properly, at a time that suits them, and to speak to the people who live and work here. We think that tells you more than any description we could write, including this one.

More about the care at Brook House
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Day to day help for older people usually covers washing, dressing, prompting or administering medication, mobility support and simple companionship over meals and quiet afternoons. Brook House is registered with the CQC for older person care, and its own words describe an aim of ordinary life, well supported, with people getting up when they want to and eating food they actually like. Families weighing it up should ask how a typical morning runs, how many staff are on shift overnight and how call bells are answered in the small hours. It is also fair to ask what has changed since the November 2024 inspection that led to a requires improvement rating, which the home itself invites relatives to raise directly. A visit at a normal, busy time of day tends to tell you more than any brochure.
Dementia
Good dementia care tends to rest on familiar routines, staff who know a person's history, a calm and secure layout, and unhurried responses when someone is distressed or disorientated. Brook House in Colchester is registered for dementia care and speaks in its own words about consistency, familiar faces and a steady rhythm to the day for residents living with the condition. Useful questions for any family visiting include how the home responds when a resident becomes upset or tries to leave, how they involve relatives in life story work, and what happens as needs change and someone becomes less mobile or less verbal. It is also worth asking how night time confusion is handled and how medication for agitation is reviewed. Seeing the environment in person, ideally more than once, matters here.
Younger Adults
Adults under 65 in a care home often want a lifestyle that reflects their age, including their own interests, friendships, work or study, and time out of the building. Brook House is registered to support younger adults alongside older residents, which makes it reasonable to ask how peers, activities and daily choices are shaped for someone in their thirties, forties or fifties rather than assumed from an older cohort.
Respite Care
Short stays at Brook House are covered by its registration for respite care, useful when a family carer needs a break or someone is recovering from illness. Book as far ahead as possible, as rooms move quickly around holidays. Pack clothes, toiletries, current medication in its original packaging and a list of GP and next of kin details. A one or two week stay can also serve as a trial run before considering a permanent move.
Residential Care
Residential care covers the everyday side of living somewhere new: cooked meals, help with personal care, laundry, medication support, and time spent with other people rather than alone. It differs from nursing care in that a registered nurse is not on site around the clock, so it suits people whose health needs can be met by care staff with input from a visiting GP and district nurses. Brook House is registered for residential rather than nursing care, and describes itself as a permanent home where residents keep up with the things and people that matter to them. Ask how menus are planned, how choice works day to day, and what happens if a resident's health needs increase over time. Indicative private fees across the East of England sit around £1000 to £1350 a week.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Yes. Brook House supports younger adults as well as older people. Source: CQC register
