Nursing Homes in West Sussex

118 providers in West Sussex

The search for nursing homes in West Sussex usually begins on a difficult day, perhaps when a hospital ward says that going home is no longer safe, or when a family carer has run out of nights they can manage. West Sussex County Council carries out the care needs assessment that should shape what happens next, along with the financial assessment that decides how much help towards the cost is available. One hundred and twenty nursing homes are listed on this page, and their inspection results are far from uniform. Outstanding ratings sit with homes including Red Oaks, Woodlands Nursing Home and Maplehurst Nursing Home, Good ratings run through the listings, some homes are rated Requires Improvement, and others are still waiting on a first rating from the Care Quality Commission. A rating is a starting point rather than a verdict. Open the profiles that interest you, read the inspection reports in full, and let the detail inspectors set down guide the choice your family makes.

Here at Derwent Lodge, we are a nursing home based in Billingshurst, West Sussex, and we are proud to offer a warm and genuinely caring environment for the people who live with us. We support a range of needs, including older person care, nursing care, dementia care, care for younger adults, and respite care. This means we are well placed to help individuals and families who are navigating some quite significant life changes, and we take that responsibility seriously. Whether someone comes to us for a short respite stay or moves in on a longer term basis, we aim to make sure they feel at home from the very beginning. Our team works hard to understand each person as an individual. We know that moving into a care setting is a big step, and we do not take lightly the trust that residents and their families place in us. Getting to know people properly, their preferences, their routines, their histories, matters enormously to how we provide care day to day. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in an overall rating of Good. We see that as an honest reflection of the work our staff put in, though we are always looking at how we can do better and continue to improve the experience for everyone living here. Billingshurst is a lovely community to be part of, and we value the connections we have locally. Families are always welcome, and we encourage people to stay involved in the lives of their loved ones. If you would like to find out more about Derwent Lodge or come and have a look around, we would be very happy to hear from you. We think the best way to get a feel for who we are is simply to come and visit.

New Elmcroft is a nursing home in Shoreham By Sea. We care for older people who need nursing support, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Having registered nurses on site around the clock means clinical needs are met in the home rather than through repeated trips to hospital. Wound care, catheters, diabetes, pain relief and the gradual changes that come with frailty are managed by people who know the person, in surroundings they know. Most of good nursing care is unglamorous and depends on reliability. Pressure care that does not slip. Mouth care that is not skipped. Someone sitting with a person who is frightened in the night. The rest of the job is making sure there is a life here and not only treatment. Residents choose their routines and their rooms are their own. With dementia we keep the surroundings calm and familiar and look for what lies behind distress. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to gloss over that. We know which areas were identified, work is in hand, and we would rather discuss it openly with anyone considering New Elmcroft than have it come as a surprise. Please visit, ask us direct questions and see the home as it actually is.

Here at Westholme Clinic, we provide nursing home care in the heart of Worthing, West Sussex, supporting people who need a safe, attentive and genuinely caring environment to call home. Our team works across several areas of specialist care, including older person care, nursing care, dementia care and support for younger adults. We recognise that each person who comes to live with us has their own history, preferences and needs, and we do our best to make sure that individuality is respected every single day. Whether someone is living with dementia, managing a complex nursing need or simply needs a level of support that can no longer be provided at home, we aim to offer the kind of care that feels personal rather than institutional. We are pleased to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the effort our staff put in consistently and the standards we hold ourselves to. It matters to us that the people in our care, as well as their families, feel confident in the support being provided. We welcome families to be involved and to stay in contact, because we believe good care works best when it is built around open and honest relationships. Here at Westergate House, we provide nursing home care in the heart of Arundel, West Sussex, and we take real pride in the community we have built here. We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether to recover, to give a family carer a break, or simply to try us out before committing to a longer term arrangement. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and that matters to us. It reflects the effort our whole team puts in day to day, not just when inspectors visit, but consistently, in the way we speak to residents, listen to their families, and respond when things need to change. We know that choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. When someone moves in, we take time to understand who they are, what their routine looks like, what they enjoy, and what makes them feel at ease. Good care is personal, and we work hard to make sure each resident feels genuinely known rather than simply looked after. Being based in Arundel means we are part of a beautiful part of West Sussex, and we make the most of that wherever we can, whether through trips out, visitors coming in, or simply the sense of being connected to a real place rather than somewhere anonymous. If you would like to find out whether Westergate House could be the right fit for your loved one, please do get in touch. We are always happy to show you round and answer any questions you might have.

Aster Grove Nursing Home is in Littlehampton. We care for older people and younger adults with nursing needs, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite and short stays. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours here. That means complex health needs, medication, wound and continence care and care at the end of life are looked after on site, and it means somebody notices early when a resident is becoming unwell rather than once it is obvious. The nursing is the foundation and not the purpose. People live here, and we would rather be judged on whether their days are good ones. Food worth eating, time for a proper conversation, a garden to sit in, familiar music, visitors welcome whenever they arrive, and staff who are not too busy to sit down with somebody. For residents living with dementia we keep the day steady and unhurried and we learn what reassures a particular person. Where somebody has a mental health condition we work alongside their community team and keep our approach consistent with what they are used to, since inconsistency is what unsettles people most. Where a resident is nearing the end of life we plan openly with them and their family, keep them comfortable and make room for relatives to stay as long as they want. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home and talk to the people in it.

We at Fairlight Nursing Home are proud to offer compassionate nursing and dementia care in the welcoming coastal town of Littlehampton, West Sussex. Our home provides a calm and supportive environment for older people and younger adults who require dedicated nursing support, whilst also welcoming those living with a range of complex needs. Nestled within the BN postcode area of Littlehampton, our home benefits from the gentle pace and fresh sea air that this part of the South East is so well loved for. The surroundings offer residents a peaceful setting in which to feel truly at home, with the familiar comforts of a close knit community on the doorstep. We have created interiors that prioritise warmth, comfort, and accessibility, ensuring that every resident can move through their day with ease and dignity. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of care we are able to provide. As a nursing home, we deliver round the clock clinical support for those with ongoing health needs, drawing on the expertise of qualified nurses who work closely with each resident and their loved ones. Our dementia care is shaped by a deep understanding of how memory loss affects each person differently, and we take time to learn life stories, preferences, and routines so that familiarity and reassurance are always close at hand. For residents living with a physical disability, we focus on enabling independence wherever possible, adapting our approach so that everyday activities feel achievable and rewarding. We also support individuals with visual or hearing impairments, taking care to communicate clearly, sensitively, and in ways that suit each person. By welcoming younger adults alongside our older residents, we maintain a community in which people of different ages and backgrounds can share companionship, conversation, and a genuine sense of belonging. In practice, this means families can feel confident that their relative is receiving care tailored to who they are, not simply to a diagnosis. We work in partnership with relatives, healthcare professionals, and the wider community to make sure that care plans evolve as needs change. Small daily kindnesses, a favourite meal, a quiet chat, a hand to hold during a difficult moment, sit at the heart of how we work. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our most recent CQC inspection, carried out in July 2022, in which we were rated Good overall. We were also rated Good across every individual domain, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this independent assessment offers reassurance that the standards we set for ourselves are recognised by the regulator, and that the experience of residents in our care is one of safety, dignity, and genuine warmth. Choosing a nursing home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the worry and emotion that can come with it. We at Fairlight Nursing Home warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and arrange a visit so you can see for yourself the care, kindness, and community we offer here in Littlehampton. Whatever stage of the journey you are at, we are ready to listen, to guide, and to help you find the right way forward for your loved one.

Burleys Wood provides residential and nursing care in Crawley, West Sussex. We support older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults with nursing needs. Respite stays are available for shorter periods of care. Having both residential and nursing care here means people can often stay with us as their health needs change rather than facing another move. But most of what makes a day good or bad has little to do with nursing. It is whether somebody was helped at their own pace, whether the food was something they actually wanted, whether their room feels like theirs and whether they were asked rather than told. Those are the things we want to be judged on. We need to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have an action plan in place and we are working through it with colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly instead of finding it elsewhere. If you are considering us for a relative, please come and visit. Look at the home properly, speak to our nurses and the people living here, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed. We will answer plainly rather than steering you towards a brochure.

Norden House is a nursing home in Littlehampton, West Sussex. We care for older people whose needs include nursing, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do. Nursing on site means somebody's health changing is something we handle rather than a reason to move them on. Families who have already been through one upheaval usually see the value of that immediately. The work we do deliberately is keeping the place domestic. A home with clinical staff in it can slide into feeling like a ward, and once that happens people stop being consulted about their own day. So mealtimes, fresh air, unhurried help and privacy are protected on purpose. For residents living with dementia we hold the routine still and learn the life behind the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information becomes much harder to gather later. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come at a mealtime and watch whether anybody is sitting waiting for help to eat, because that tells you more than any rating.

We care for older adults, including many living with dementia, for people with a physical disability, for people with a learning disability and autistic people whose health needs require nursing, and for younger adults. Respite admissions are available as well as permanent places. We should raise our rating ourselves rather than let you stumble on it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accept it. An inspection sees what is there on the day, and putting it right is our responsibility. There is an action plan, the people who commission care from us are kept informed of where we have reached, and we would much rather take a family through that face to face than offer a sentence meant to soothe. Meanwhile the nursing continues and it matters. Medicines, wounds, pain, pressure care, and making sure people eat and drink enough. The part no procedure covers is noticing early that somebody is not themselves, and that depends on continuity of staff. For residents with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings calm, and we work at the person's pace rather than ours. Come and see us, ask the uncomfortable questions, and talk to families already here.

We care for older people, including many people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are part of what we do. People usually come to us when health needs have grown beyond what support at home or a residential home can meet, and our task is to meet those needs without letting them become the whole of somebody's life. Nursing here means consistent attention to the things that keep a person comfortable and well: medicines, mobility, nutrition and hydration, skin, continence and pain, reviewed properly and talked through with the person and their family rather than handled quietly in the background. Around that, ordinary life carries on. People rise when they wake, keep their own furniture and photographs about them, choose where to spend the day and eat food that suits their taste. Where there is sensory loss we attend to lighting, contrast and working hearing aids. With dementia we rely on knowing somebody well. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

St Magnus in Haslemere provides nursing care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. This is specialist work and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. Many of the people who come to us have long histories with health services, periods in hospital, and relationships with professionals that have not always gone well. Recovery, where it happens, is rarely a straight line, and our job is to provide somewhere steady enough that progress becomes possible, and to stay steady ourselves when it does not. Practically that means qualified nursing care, careful attention to medication and physical health alongside mental health, and close work with community teams, GPs and other professionals involved. It also means routines people can rely on and a culture where somebody can be unwell without being treated as a problem to be managed. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we welcome enquiries from families and professionals.

We keep in close contact with GPs and community health teams so that care is properly joined up. Here at Amberley Lodge Care Home, we provide nursing and residential care for people in Worthing, West Sussex, and the surrounding communities. We are a nursing home that supports older adults, people living with dementia, younger adults, and those who need a shorter stay with us for respite care. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a person and their family will ever make. We take that responsibility seriously, and we work hard to make sure that everyone who comes through our doors feels genuinely at home. That means listening carefully to what matters to each person, understanding their routines, their preferences, and the things that bring them comfort and enjoyment. Our nursing team is on hand around the clock, bringing both clinical skill and a real warmth to the care they provide. Whether someone is living with a complex health condition, navigating the challenges of dementia, or simply needing support to maintain their independence and quality of life, we tailor our approach to the individual rather than applying a one size fits all model. For those who need respite care, perhaps to give a family carer some time to rest, or to recover following a hospital stay, we aim to make the transition as straightforward and reassuring as possible. Many of those who come to us for a short stay choose to return. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good, which reflects the consistent effort our whole team puts in day to day. If you would like to find out more about life at Amberley Lodge, or to arrange a visit, we would be very glad to hear from you. We are always happy to show people around and answer any questions.

Warnham Lodge is a nursing home in Horsham, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across West Sussex, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people who have a physical disability. Having qualified nurses on site at all hours is what allows us to look after people whose health needs are genuinely complex and liable to change. Medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the close observation that catches deterioration before it turns into an emergency are the ordinary content of our days. For families worn down by repeated hospital admissions, the end of that cycle is usually what they notice first. Nursing is the foundation rather than the point. The point is that somebody carries on being themselves while their health is looked after. So we ask before we act, we keep personal care private, we make visitors welcome at inconvenient hours, and we take the trouble to learn what a particular person would actually like to do with an afternoon. For residents whose mental health needs sit alongside physical ill health, we try to hold both properly at once and we work with the teams already involved rather than starting from scratch. That combination is often handled badly, with symptoms read as behaviour or the other way round. With dementia we rely on familiar faces and a calm pace. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see us, and ask the nurses how the hard days go.

    • Nursing Home

Barnham Manor is a nursing home in Bognor Regis in West Sussex. We care for older people who need nursing support, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. Having qualified nurses on site around the clock means we can look after people whose health is genuinely complicated and keep looking after them as things change, rather than moving somebody on at the point continuity matters most. Wounds, pain, continence, nutrition, medication and moving safely are all managed properly here, and a good deal that would otherwise mean a trip to hospital can be dealt with at home instead. What we watch for is the way clinical care can quietly reduce somebody to a round of tasks, so ordinary courtesies get as much attention as medical ones. People decide when they get up, what they wear, what is on their plate and how they spend the afternoon. We knock, we explain what we are about to do, and we wait for an answer. Dementia asks for a familiar day above anything we could add, and where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture the small habits carry the weight: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture where it belongs, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and families where we fall short.

    • Nursing Home

The Beeches Nursing Home is in Worthing, West Sussex. We provide nursing care for older people and for younger adults, including people with physical disabilities and complex health needs, and we take respite admissions alongside longer stays. Having qualified nurses on site means we can support people whose health needs are significant or changing without them having to move again. That covers things like managing long term conditions, supporting people after hospital, pressure care, and care towards the end of life given properly and unhurriedly. The clinical side matters, but it is not what people notice first. What they notice is whether their relative is comfortable, whether the food is any good, whether somebody answers when they call and whether the people looking after them know their name and their story. Those are the things we hold ourselves to, and they are the things we ask families to tell us about honestly. We support a number of younger adults with physical disabilities, and we are conscious that a nursing home has to work differently for someone in their thirties or forties than for someone in their nineties. Independence, privacy and a life outside the building all matter, and we plan around that. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take it as a foundation rather than a conclusion. You are welcome to visit The Beeches and see the home as it ordinarily is.

Drumconner Lancing is a nursing home in Lancing, West Sussex. We care for older people who need nursing support and for people living with a physical disability, and we welcome people for respite stays as well as for longer term care. Having qualified nurses on site means health needs are met here, without anybody having to move on because their condition has changed. It also means changes are noticed early, which usually spares someone a hospital admission. That side of things should feel unremarkable, so the rest of the day can belong to the person living it. We ask each person how they like to live and we take the answers seriously. Hours, meals, company, privacy, how much help is wanted and how much is not. For someone with a physical disability, that includes being asked before being assisted and never being hurried through personal care. Small courtesies of that kind are what separate a home from an institution. Families and friends are part of life here. Come when it suits you, be as involved as you would like to be, and tell us honestly if something is not right. We would far rather hear it early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering nursing care in Lancing or elsewhere in West Sussex, please arrange to visit and see how it feels.

Our team is experienced in supporting individuals with physical disabilities as well as those living with visual or hearing impairments, taking the time to understand each person's preferences and adapt care accordingly. We also welcome younger adults who require nursing support, recognising that care needs are not defined by age alone. For families needing short term support, our respite care option offers peace of mind, whether following a hospital stay, during a carer's break, or as a trial stay to experience our home. In practice, this means families can trust that their loved one is receiving personalised attention, whilst residents themselves benefit from continuity, kindness, and expert clinical oversight. We are pleased that the Care Quality Commission rated us Good overall at our most recent inspection on 22 August 2024, with Good ratings across all five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This independent recognition reflects the dedication of our team and the quality of daily life we strive to provide, giving families reassurance that our standards are consistently met. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. If you are exploring options for a loved one in Horsham or the wider West Sussex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch, arrange a visit, and see for yourself the caring community we have built at Windermere House. We are here to answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and support your family every step of the way.

Ashton Grange is a nursing and residential home in Horsham. We care for older people who need nursing support and for those who need residential care, which means that if someone's health changes over time they do not have to pack up and start again somewhere new. A large part of our work is with people living with dementia, and we give it the time it needs. Steady routines, familiar staff, meals at expected times and patience in conversation do more good than anything hurried. We also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and younger adults with nursing needs, and we plan around the person rather than around a label. Respite stays are part of what we offer too. Sometimes a family carer simply needs a fortnight off, and sometimes someone needs nursing support for a few weeks after a hospital admission before going home again. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We are glad of it and we keep our own checks running between inspections, since that is where the real standard is either held or lost. If you are thinking about a home for someone in your family, please come and look round. Come at a normal time on a normal day, talk to the people who live here, and ask us anything at all.

We are Westlake, a nursing home in Horsham. We care for older people and for younger adults who need nursing support. Having qualified nurses on duty at every hour is what allows us to look after people whose health is complicated or liable to change. Problems are noticed early by staff who know the person, treatment starts without waiting for somebody to visit from outside, and families are not left wondering what cover exists once the office has closed. The nursing side is essential but it is not the purpose of the place. People live here, and we work at making that a proper life. Rooms are personalised, people get up and settle at night when they choose, and meals are something to look forward to rather than an item on a timetable. Our staff take time to learn who somebody was before they needed care, because that knowledge is what separates being looked after from being managed. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come, and we keep them informed rather than waiting to be asked. If we are worried about something we ring early. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places, which suits families needing a break and people regaining their strength after a spell in hospital. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Willett Lodge is a nursing home in Worthing, West Sussex. We care for older people who need registered nursing alongside help with daily life, and a large part of our work is with people living with dementia. We also support younger adults whose health needs call for nursing care. Nursing cover around the clock is the practical reason most people come to us. It allows us to manage complex medication, skin and pressure care, continence and nutrition, and to keep a steady watch on health so that changes are caught while they are still small. Where somebody is nearing the end of their life, it means we can keep them comfortable here, among people who know them. Dementia asks for something other than clinical skill. It asks for a familiar rhythm to the day, surroundings that are easy to make sense of, and staff who go where the person is instead of correcting them. We take time to learn about somebody's working life, their family and their habits, because that is what explains how they are now. We also try not to let the clinical side swallow the rest. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who visits. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Croft Meadow is a nursing home in Steyning caring for older people who need qualified nursing alongside help with everyday life, and for younger adults whose nursing needs are best met in a home like ours. Nurses are on duty day and night, so medication, wound care and conditions that need watching are managed here and somebody who becomes unwell is seen straight away. Many of our residents are living with dementia. We keep the day calm and predictable, keep the same staff working with the same people and take time to understand what someone is telling us when words have become difficult. If a person wants to be up and about, we make that safe rather than asking them to sit down. Nursing is the foundation of what we do, but the purpose of it is an ordinary life. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who comes to visit. Food is cooked here and nobody is hurried through a meal, and there is somewhere pleasant to sit outside when the weather allows. Respite stays are available for people needing nursing support for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. Families are welcome and we would rather hear a worry early than late. Please ring us if you would like to visit and meet the nurses on duty.

Dementia nursing asks for patience more than anything. Aldersmead is a nursing home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. Because we are registered for nursing care, we can look after people whose health needs are more complex than a residential home can safely meet, with qualified nurses working alongside our care team rather than visiting from outside. Our residents are mainly older adults who need clinical care as well as help with the everyday things. We look after medication, nutrition, skin care, pain and comfort, and we help with washing, dressing and moving about in a way that leaves people doing what they still can for themselves. We work closely with GPs and community health teams so that care is joined up, and we watch for the quieter signs of change. Dementia care is a large part of what we do, and it depends on continuity more than anything else: familiar staff, a routine that holds steady and reassurance given without any hint of impatience. We also care for younger adults whose conditions require nursing support. Respite stays are available for families needing a break or extra support after a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour.

Grasmere Nursing Home provides nursing care in Worthing for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. Having qualified nurses here throughout the day and night means conditions can be managed steadily as they change, medicines are properly reviewed, and people who would otherwise face repeated hospital admissions can usually be looked after here by staff who know them. Alongside the clinical side, we try to keep ordinary life going, because a nursing home run like a ward is a poor place to live. Residents choose their own routines, relatives are welcome whenever they want to come, and meals are meant to be enjoyed. We would rather be honest about our inspection position than leave families to find it out elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. The findings described real shortfalls and we accepted them. Since then our manager has tightened medicines practice and record keeping, strengthened training and supervision, and put regular internal checks in place so that we notice problems ourselves rather than waiting for an inspector. That work continues. If you are considering us for a relative, please visit, ask exactly what has changed since the inspection, and talk to residents and families while you are in the building.

We are a nursing home in Littlehampton, caring for people whose needs call for qualified nursing as well as help with daily living. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Registered nurses on duty means that medication, pain, wounds, continence and difficulties with eating and drinking are managed properly, and that changes in someone's health are picked up early rather than late. Around that clinical work we try to protect the ordinary business of living: deciding when to get up, what to wear, what to eat and who you want sitting with you. Caring well for someone living with dementia depends less on procedure than on knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that is what allows a member of staff to settle somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. We work alongside general practitioners, community teams and hospital staff, keep families informed as a matter of course, and where someone is approaching the end of life we concentrate on comfort, dignity and the company of those they love. Respite stays are available too. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission and are glad to talk about that openly. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to.

Westhampnett is a nursing home near Chichester, West Sussex. We support older people whose needs include nursing care, including people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. Having registered nurses as part of the team means people with complex health needs can stay with us as those needs change rather than being moved on again. Families who have already been through one difficult move usually recognise the value of that immediately. We work at keeping the nursing from setting the tone of the place. A nursing home can drift into feeling like a ward, and once it does the rest follows: people stop being asked what they would like, days lose any shape of their own, and relatives begin behaving like hospital visitors. So we keep our attention on ordinary things. Meals worth eating. Getting outside when the weather allows. Help without a long wait. Privacy. For residents with physical disabilities we plan the practical side around what somebody can still do themselves rather than what is fastest for us. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We are happy to answer difficult questions and we would think less of anybody who did not ask them.

Here at Baytrees Nursing Home in Worthing, West Sussex, we provide nursing care for older people, younger adults and individuals living with physical disabilities. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is to recover after a hospital admission or to give family carers a much needed break. We know that choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a person and their family will ever make. It is not something anyone takes lightly, and we do not take it lightly either. Our aim is to make sure that every person who comes through our doors feels genuinely seen and heard, not just looked after in a clinical sense, but cared for as an individual with their own history, preferences and personality. Our nursing team works closely with residents, families and visiting healthcare professionals to make sure that care plans reflect what actually matters to each person. We believe good nursing care goes hand in hand with warmth, respect and honest communication, and we work hard to maintain that in everything we do. We are aware that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in an overall rating of requires improvement. We want to be straightforward about that rather than brush over it. We have taken the findings seriously, put clear steps in place to address the areas raised, and we continue to work on improving the experience we provide. We would always encourage anyone considering a placement with us to come and visit, ask questions and see the home for themselves. Baytrees is part of the Worthing community, and we are committed to being a place where people feel at home, where families feel welcome and where the standard of care keeps getting better.

Deepdene Court is a home in Littlehampton, West Sussex, providing both residential and nursing care, with a particular focus on supporting adults with mental health needs. Nursing care is available here, which means that health needs are managed on site and people are not moved on unnecessarily when their needs change. Mental health support in a care home works best when the place itself is calm, predictable and free of fuss. We keep our staff team as consistent as we can, we get to know people well enough to notice when something has shifted, and we work closely with local mental health services, doctors and, where they are involved, community teams. Medication is managed carefully and reviewed properly. We also believe people should not be defined by a diagnosis. Residents choose how they spend the day, what they eat, whether they want company and who visits. We will encourage somebody who has become withdrawn, and we will equally respect a person who wants their own space. For residents needing help with personal care or with moving safely, our staff are trained and the right equipment is in place. We offer respite stays for people who need support for a short period and for families who need a break from caring. If you are looking at options in this part of West Sussex, please contact us and come and see how the home runs.

Here at Cherington, we provide nursing home care for people living in Bognor Regis and the wider West Sussex area. Our team works with a broad range of residents, including older people, those living with dementia, individuals with a learning disability or autism, younger adults, and people coming to us for a short respite stay. We believe that whatever brings someone through our doors, they deserve to feel genuinely at home. Nursing care sits at the heart of what we do. Our clinical team is on hand around the clock, which means residents and their families can feel confident that health needs are being met with proper attention and skill. For those living with dementia, we take time to understand each person's history, preferences and routines, because we know how much that understanding matters in day to day life. We are honest about where we are as a service. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we take that seriously. We have been working through the feedback carefully and making real, practical changes. We are not defensive about it. We would rather be transparent with families and show through our actions that things are moving in the right direction. Cherington is a place where residents are treated as individuals, where families are welcomed in, and where the staff genuinely know the people they are caring for. We work hard to create an atmosphere that feels calm and human rather than clinical and impersonal. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone close to you, we would welcome the chance to show you around and have a proper conversation about whether Cherington might be the right fit. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us directly.

Kingsland House is a nursing home in Shoreham By Sea. We care for older people who need nursing support, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Having registered nurses on site around the clock means clinical needs are met here rather than through repeated trips to hospital. Wound care, catheters, diabetes, pain relief and the gradual changes that come with frailty are managed by people who know the person, in surroundings they know. Families can ring and speak to somebody who can actually tell them how their relative has been that day. Most of good nursing care is small things done reliably and on time. Pressure care that does not slip. Mouth care that is not skipped. Someone sitting with a person who is frightened in the night. Those are the things we would rather be measured on. The other half of the job is a life worth getting up for. Residents choose their routines and their rooms are their own. With dementia we keep the surroundings calm and familiar and treat distress as something with a cause. Where someone has a physical disability we think carefully about equipment and about not helping more than is wanted. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Kingsland House.

Here at Compton House Christian Nursing Home, we provide nursing and personal care for older people in a warm and welcoming environment in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Our Christian ethos shapes the way we approach care — not as a set of tasks to complete, but as a genuine commitment to treating every person who lives with us with dignity, kindness and respect. We support older people with a range of nursing needs, and we also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers a well earned break. Whatever brings someone to us, we want them to feel at home from the moment they arrive. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us as Good, and we are proud of that recognition. It reflects the effort our whole team puts into making sure that care is safe, attentive and responsive to each person as an individual. We take the time to understand what matters to the people we care for, including their routines, their preferences and the things that bring them comfort and joy. Being rooted in Christian values does not mean that our home is only for those of a particular faith. Everyone is welcome here, and we are committed to respecting the backgrounds, beliefs and life histories of all our residents. That sense of respect and community runs through everything we do, from the way we share mealtimes together to how we support residents and their families through more difficult moments. If you are considering care for yourself or a loved one, we would be very glad to hear from you and to show you around our home. We believe the best way to understand who we are is simply to come and meet us.

Homelands Nursing Home is at Cowfold in West Sussex, and we provide nursing care for older people and for younger adults whose conditions require qualified nursing. Respite stays are available when a family carer needs a break or cover. Having registered nurses on duty at every hour shapes everything here. Medication is managed closely, wound care, catheter care and conditions that vary from week to week are handled on site, and a change in a resident's health is usually noticed early because the person noticing knows them well. We work alongside GPs, district nurses, therapists and hospital teams, and we press for what a resident needs when it is slow in coming. Dementia care matters as much to us as clinical care, and the two cannot really be separated. Someone who is frightened or in pain and cannot say so will show us in other ways, and reading that properly depends on knowing the person. So we ask families about working lives, families, music, food and old habits, and we keep the day calm and familiar rather than busy and full of surprises. We should be open about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have gone through the findings with our team and those areas are where our attention is concentrated at present. Anyone considering Homelands is welcome to come on an ordinary working day, see the place as it really is, and ask us about it directly.

We are Marriott House and Lodge, a nursing home in Chichester, West Sussex. We provide nursing care for older people and younger adults, including those with a physical disability, and we take respite stays as well as permanent places. Having qualified nurses on site at every hour is the practical difference between us and a residential home. Changes in a resident's health are picked up by staff who already know them, a move elsewhere is rarely necessary when a condition shifts, and care at the end of life can be given here among familiar people. For residents with a physical disability, the difference between good care and poor care is usually time and attention to detail. Enough time that a transfer is unhurried. Equipment set up as it should be. Being asked how something is best done by the person who actually knows, which is the resident. The rest is ordinary living, which we work at protecting. Own routines, own belongings, meals worth sitting down to, and visitors who do not need to book. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Abbots Lawn is a nursing home in Bognor Regis, with registered nurses on duty around the clock alongside our care team. We look after older people whose health needs require nursing, younger adults with nursing needs, people living with dementia, and people living with mental health conditions. People generally come to us when their needs have grown beyond what residential care or support at home can safely meet. The nursing covers management of long term conditions, wound and skin care, continence support, help where eating and swallowing have become difficult, and careful oversight of medication. We work closely with local GPs, district nurses and therapy teams, and we ask for specialist advice early. What we try to avoid is letting the clinical side take over the day. The most valuable parts of a week here are usually the least medical: a visit from family, a conversation that runs on longer than it needed to, a turn round the garden or down to the sea front when somebody is well enough. For people living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We support a wide range of individuals, including older people, those living with dementia, people with mental health needs, and younger adults who require nursing care or a shorter respite stay. Our team works hard to make sure that everyone who comes through our doors feels genuinely at home. We know that choosing a care setting is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone moves in, whether permanently or for a short break, we focus on getting to know them as a person rather than simply as a resident with a set of care needs. Dementia care sits at the heart of much of what we do, and we have developed our approach over time to make sure people living with dementia feel safe, calm and understood. Equally, we are experienced in supporting people whose mental health presents its own particular challenges, and we work to create an environment where everyone is treated with patience and respect. Our nursing team is on hand around the clock, giving residents and their families the reassurance that clinical support is always available when it is needed. We also work closely with GPs, community nurses and other healthcare professionals to make sure care plans stay current and reflect each person's changing circumstances. We were pleased to receive a rating of good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment our whole team brings to what they do each day. If you would like to find out more about life at Weyspring Park, or to arrange a visit, please do get in touch. We would love to show you around.

Mill River Lodge is a nursing home in Horsham, West Sussex, offering both residential and nursing care for older people and for younger adults who need skilled support. Because we provide residential and nursing care in one place, people can often stay with us as their health changes rather than having to move again when needs increase. We look after people living with dementia and people with complex medical conditions, and we welcome respite stays for families needing a break or for someone recovering after a spell in hospital. We start with the person. What time do you like to get up, what do you enjoy eating, who do you want to see, what can you still do yourself and what would you rather have help with. Those answers shape the care plan, and the clinical side of things fits around them wherever it safely can. Where somebody is living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and our staff are trained to look for the cause of distress rather than simply managing it. Relatives are welcome throughout the day, and we take the view that families should hear from us before they have to ask, particularly when something has changed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Mill River Lodge for someone close to you, come and visit, talk to the nurses and carers and see whether it feels like somewhere they could be at home.

Berkeley Lodge provides nursing care in Worthing for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. Qualified nurses are here throughout the day and night, and that changes what is possible. Conditions can be managed as they change rather than in emergencies, medicines get proper review, and people who would otherwise be moved repeatedly between home and hospital can be cared for here by staff who know them well. For people nearing the end of life, it means comfort and familiar faces. Nursing is only part of the picture. The people here are residents before they are patients, so we work at keeping ordinary life intact. Residents decide when to get up and how to spend the day, meals are meant to be enjoyed, and relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar and the pace gentle, and we work with what somebody can still do. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break and support people who need nursing care for a period before going home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking residents and families what they think of us, because an inspection is a snapshot and daily life is the real test.

Nursing here covers medication, wound care, continence, nutrition, mobility and the monitoring of long term conditions, and we work closely with local health professionals so that changes are picked up early rather than late. Residents bring their own furniture, photographs and habits with them and keep their own opinions about how a day should run. People choose when to get up, where to sit, what they want to eat and whose company they want. Where somebody needs longer for personal care or for moving about, they get it. For residents living with dementia we keep the setting calm and predictable and take the trouble to learn who a person has always been, which usually matters more than any technique on a difficult day. Here at Skylark House, we provide nursing home care for people living in Horsham and across West Sussex. Our team supports a wide range of needs, including older person care, nursing care, dementia care, mental health support, physical disability care, younger adults, and respite care. We genuinely believe that good care looks different for every person who comes through our doors, and we work hard to understand what matters most to each individual. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the effort our whole team puts in day to day. It is not something we take for granted, and we continue to look at how we can do things better for the people we support and their families. Dementia care is an area we give a great deal of thought to. We know how unsettling it can be for someone living with dementia to move into a new environment, and we put real effort into making that transition as gentle as possible. The same applies to anyone coming to us for a shorter respite stay. Whether someone is with us for a few weeks or for the long term, they deserve to feel comfortable and at home. Families are important to us too. We encourage people to stay involved in the lives of their loved ones and to speak openly with us about any concerns or wishes they have. We would far rather have an honest conversation than have anyone feel they cannot raise something. If you are thinking about care for yourself or for someone close to you, we would welcome the chance to chat. You are very welcome to come and see us, ask questions, and get a feel for who we are and how we work. Skylark House is a place where people are known, not just looked after.

Tarring Manor is a nursing home in Worthing, with qualified nurses on duty at all times alongside our care team. We care for older people and younger adults, including many people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. People generally come to us when health needs have grown beyond what support at home or a residential home can meet, and our task is to meet those needs without letting them become the whole of somebody's life. Nursing here means steady attention to the things that keep a person comfortable and well: medicines, mobility, nutrition and hydration, skin, continence and pain, reviewed properly and talked through with the person and their family rather than handled quietly in the background. We involve GPs, district nurses and specialists early rather than late. Around that, ordinary life carries on. People rise when they wake, sit where they choose, keep their own furniture and photographs about them, and eat food that suits their taste as well as any clinical need. With dementia we rely on knowing somebody well, so we gather a person's history with their family and keep adding to it. When somebody is nearing the end of life we aim to be honest, present and unhurried. We are registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission, and anyone considering the home is welcome to visit and ask us anything.

Qualified nurses are on site at all hours, which is what allows people with substantial health needs to live here rather than being moved repeatedly between home and hospital. Medication, wound care, careful attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and catching deterioration early are the substance of our days. Being small, we have no excuse for not knowing people properly. The residents here are adults with histories and preferences, and a serious health need does not remove anybody's right to decide when they get up, what they wear or who comes into their room. Come and see us at a busy time of day, speak to the people who live and work here, and judge the place as it is now rather than as a grade describes it.

Pentlands Nursing Home is in Worthing. We care for older people and younger adults with nursing needs and we offer respite and short stays. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours. That means complex health needs, medication, wound and continence care and care at the end of life are looked after here rather than through repeated journeys to hospital, and it means somebody notices early when a resident is becoming unwell rather than once it is obvious. We do one thing and we try to do it well. There is no specialist wing here and no attempt to be all things to everybody. What we offer is careful nursing care in a place where people are known, and days that are theirs rather than the rota's. That means food worth eating, time for a proper conversation, a garden to sit in, familiar music, and staff who are not too busy to sit down with somebody. It also means asking at the outset how a person has always liked their day to run and then working that way, rather than fitting them to a routine that suits us. Where a resident is nearing the end of life we plan openly with them and their family, keep them comfortable and make room for relatives to stay as long as they want. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome through the day and need not arrange it in advance.

    • Nursing Home

Ullswater Cottage is a nursing home in Crawley, West Sussex. We provide nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and people managing mental health conditions. We also support younger adults and people with a learning disability or autism, and we offer respite stays. Having qualified nurses on site means people can remain with us as their health needs change rather than facing another move, which matters a great deal to families who have already been through one. The clinical side is only part of it though. Most of what makes a day good or bad here has little to do with nursing. It is whether somebody was helped at their own pace, whether the food was something they genuinely wanted, whether their room feels like theirs and whether they were asked rather than told. Dementia support is a significant part of our work. Familiar staff, steady routines and patience do more good than anything else, along with a real effort to understand what somebody means when words have become unreliable. We take the same care over communication with residents who have a learning disability or autism. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining the detail rather than treating it as settled. If you are considering a nursing home in this area for a relative, please come and see us and ask us whatever you need to know.

    • Nursing Home

Kings Lodge Nursing Home provides nursing care in Chichester for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people living with a mental health condition and people with physical disabilities. Registered nurses are on duty at all hours. Nursing care can easily become a list of tasks, and we work at stopping that. The clinical side is done thoroughly, with skin, pain, medication, nutrition and continence checked properly rather than assumed. But the reason somebody is here is to live, not to be managed, so we pay equal attention to whether people are getting outside, seeing who they want to see, eating things they enjoy and having something in the week worth being up for. For people living with dementia, and for anyone whose mental health fluctuates, we plan around familiarity and adjust to how somebody actually is rather than to how a plan says they should be. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We are not going to leave you to find that out elsewhere. We accept what was found, we are working through an improvement plan, and if you ask us where we have got to we will tell you plainly, including the parts that remain outstanding. If you are considering nursing care in West Sussex, please come and look round. Ask about staffing levels, ask what has changed since the inspection, and ask to speak to relatives of people already living here.

What nursing care in West Sussex involves and what to look for

Nursing homes occupy a particular place in the care system, and the distinction is worth holding onto while comparing them. Registration for nursing means a qualified nurse is on the premises at every hour, which is what marks these homes out from residential settings where staff are trained in care but not in clinical work. One hundred and twenty such homes are listed for West Sussex, so the practical task is to reduce that field to a handful worth seeing properly.

Deciding whether nursing registration is needed

Nursing care fits people whose health needs are continuous rather than occasional. Wound care, catheter or stoma management, medication that has to be watched closely, recovery after a stroke and conditions that can turn quickly all point to a home with nurses on site. Where the daily need is help with washing, dressing, meals and company, a residential home may suit just as well and cost less each week. Getting this judgement right at the start spares a family a second move within the year.

How the ratings across West Sussex read

Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement ratings all appear across these listings, and some homes have not yet been rated because they are newly registered or awaiting a first inspection. Melrose Care Home is among those currently holding Outstanding. Check when a report was published as well as what it concluded, because a judgement from some time back describes a home as it was then. Where a home was marked down, find out which of the key questions caused it and ask the manager what has been done since.

Seeing a home for yourself

Arrange one visit and make a second unannounced if the home will allow it, ideally at a busy stretch such as mid morning or a mealtime. Ask how many nurses and care staff cover the night, how absence is filled, and how long the registered manager has been in place. Pay attention to how staff speak to residents who cannot easily reply, since that habit reveals more than any tour.

Getting an assessment and arranging the funding

Most families reach the council late, after homes have been rung round and a place has been half promised. Turning the order round gives you a clearer brief for the search and an earlier answer on what support towards the fees exists.

The care needs assessment

An assessment is free and open to anyone who appears to need care and support, whatever their savings. West Sussex County Council is the authority responsible for carrying it out and for the care and support plan that comes from it, which records the level of care required and whether a nursing home is the right setting. Homes work from that plan when they decide whether they can meet somebody's needs safely, so having it to hand makes first conversations considerably more productive.

Council contributions and NHS funding

A financial assessment measures capital, income and property against the national thresholds to establish what the council pays and what the person contributes. NHS funded nursing care is a separate payment made straight to the home towards the nursing part of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the balance. Where somebody's needs are primarily health needs, NHS continuing healthcare can cover the whole placement, and it is fair to ask whether an assessment for it has been considered.

Fees and what they cover

Each home sets its own fee, shaped by room, location and the level of clinical support given. Ask for it in writing, with a clear account of what sits outside the weekly figure, when fees are reviewed and how far they have risen lately. Ask as well what the home does if private funds run down, because a provider that has thought that through will answer without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions about nursing homes in West Sussex

Which nursing homes in West Sussex are listed here?

This page brings together one hundred and twenty nursing homes across West Sussex registered with the Care Quality Commission. Homes such as Country Lodge Nursing Home, Tenchley Manor Nursing Home and Birchwood Grove appear alongside larger settings and more specialist units. Each listing carries the current CQC rating where one has been published. Opening a profile shows you the findings behind that rating before you approach the home.

What is worth asking on a visit to a nursing home in West Sussex?

Ask how many registered nurses and care staff are on duty by day and by night, and how the home covers sickness and holidays. Find out how long the manager has been in post and how settled the nursing team is, since consistent staffing usually shows in consistent care. Ask how care plans are reviewed, how families are told when something changes, and how the home works with district nurses and hospital teams. It is also fair to ask what would happen if the person's health needs increased.

How does a nursing home differ from a residential care home?

A residential care home provides personal care, meals, company and supervision from staff trained in care rather than nursing. A nursing home is registered for clinical care too, with a qualified nurse on duty at all times. Every home listed on this page holds that nursing registration. Where someone needs regular clinical attention such as wound care, catheter management or closely monitored medication, the nursing setting is the safer option.

Can West Sussex County Council fund a nursing home placement?

It can, where a financial assessment shows capital and income falling below the national thresholds. The council assesses the level of need first, then looks separately at finances to decide its contribution and what the person pays from their income. NHS funded nursing care is paid towards the nursing element of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the remainder. If the primary need is a health need, NHS continuing healthcare may fund the placement in full.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in West Sussex?

Get in touch with the adult social care team at West Sussex County Council and ask for an assessment for the person concerned. It is free and open to anyone who appears to need care, regardless of savings, and either the person or a relative can make the request. A practitioner will look at daily living, mobility, health conditions, risk and the support already coming from family. The resulting care and support plan then guides both the choice of home and any funding decision.

How far ahead should we begin looking at nursing homes?

Earlier than feels necessary, because well regarded homes in West Sussex often keep waiting lists and rarely have the right room free at short notice. If a hospital discharge is expected, start as soon as nursing care is first raised rather than waiting for a date. Visiting a few homes in advance turns a rushed decision into a considered one. Where nothing is urgent yet, early visits cost an afternoon and make the eventual choice much easier to face.
