More about the care at Ferndale Nursing Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Everyday support for an older person in a nursing home usually covers help with washing, dressing, continence and moving safely around the building, alongside medication given at set times and meals prepared to suit different appetites. Companionship matters just as much, since loneliness can affect health as sharply as any physical condition. Ferndale Nursing Home is registered with the Care Quality Commission for older person care, which means it can accept residents whose needs range from light prompting to full personal assistance. Families considering the home should ask how mornings and bedtimes are structured, whether residents can rise and retire at their own pace, and how many staff are on duty overnight. It is also worth asking how key workers are allocated and how changes in a resident's condition are noticed and passed on.
Dementia
Sound dementia care rests on familiar daily rhythms, staff trained to read mood and body language, and a layout that feels calm, clearly signed and safely enclosed so residents can move about without becoming lost or anxious. Ferndale Nursing Home in Crawley is registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide dementia care alongside nursing, meaning it can support people whose memory loss is combined with clinical needs. Families should ask how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or agitated, and whether restraint or as needed medication is ever used. It is also worth asking how walking with purpose, sometimes called wandering, is managed, and how care plans are adjusted as dementia advances. Questions about mealtimes, night time checks and how relatives are kept informed of small changes tend to reveal a great deal.
Respite Care
A planned short stay can give a regular carer a proper break, or act as a trial before any decision about permanent care. Ferndale Nursing Home is registered to offer respite alongside its longer term places, though availability varies and most homes ask for a minimum of one or two weeks. Pack labelled clothing, current medication in its original packaging, glasses, hearing aids and a few familiar items from home. Book several weeks ahead, particularly around school holidays.
Nursing Care
Nursing care means a registered nurse is on site at all times, which is what separates a nursing home from a residential one. It suits people with conditions such as advanced Parkinson's, stroke recovery, unstable diabetes, PEG feeding, catheter care or pressure wound management, where daily clinical oversight is needed. Ferndale Nursing Home is registered for nursing care, and its overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good at the February 2020 inspection. Weekly fees across the South East typically sit between £1350 and £1750, while West Sussex County Council usually funds around £950 to £1150 a week for those who qualify. Anyone assessed as needing nursing input can also receive NHS Funded Nursing Care, currently about £235 a week, paid directly to the home to reduce the private fee. Ask the home how that contribution appears on the invoice.

Our Rotating Menu
Our head chef plans the menu with the seasons in mind, drawing on fresh, seasonal produce so that the dishes on offer change throughout the year. We rotate our choices regularly to keep things varied and interesting, and we take care to reflect the tastes and preferences of the people who live with us.
Example dishes include:
"Our head chef takes real care over every meal, cooking freshly prepared dishes each day to suit a range of tastes and dietary needs. You might find a comforting roast dinner with all the trimmings, a warming cottage pie, or a lighter option such as poached salmon with seasonal vegetables, followed by a homemade pudding like apple crumble and custard. We are always happy to accommodate individual preferences, so residents can enjoy food they truly look forward to."

Breakfast follows between 7:30am and 8:15am, and mid morning brings games and exercise from 10:00am, with a coffee break along the way. Lunch is served from 12:30pm, and the afternoon offers board games and puzzles alongside afternoon tea. Supper arrives in the early evening, and we round things off with an evening drink at around 7:45pm. Throughout the day our team is on hand with 24/7 nursing care, and there is always time to enjoy our gardens, our chapel, social outings or a visit to the hair and beauty salon. It is a calm, comfortable rhythm, with plenty of moments to relax, share company and simply feel at home.

Our chef prepares nutritious, home cooked meals on the premises daily, with a choice at every meal. Residents can dine in our communal dining room or enjoy meals in their own room, and family and friends are always welcome to join. Mealtimes are a chance to be social, so we want dining to be a pleasure from start to finish, with welcoming dining areas, tasty and well presented food, care for dietary and cultural needs, and well timed service. Three freshly cooked meals a day are provided, plus snacks and drinks, with menus that cater for every dietary need.
🥗 Menu Variety & Seasonal Rotation
Mealtimes here at Ferndale Nursing Home are something we take real care over, and our head chef prepares lovely, nutritious food fresh each day. We know that good food is about far more than nourishment, so we offer plenty of variety to keep every meal something to look forward to. Just as importantly, we make sure the choices on offer meet each resident's individual dietary requirements, whether that means adapting a dish for a medical need, a personal preference or a particular taste. We are always happy to chat with residents and their families about what they enjoy, so that everyone can dine comfortably and well. It is our hope that every plate we serve feels warm, considered and genuinely satisfying.
🎓 Specialised Staff Training
We have a wonderful and experienced team at Ferndale. We offer care on a 24 hour basis, and our team of qualified, experienced staff ensure that all our residents, whether long term or respite, receive excellent care. Staff receive regular training so they remain proficient and always work to national standards. Our carers are placed in positions of great trust, and we provide comprehensive training from first steps to specialist qualifications.

Familiar faces from the local community visit Ferndale throughout the month, bringing music, movement, faith, furry friends and trips out to look forward to. All Saints church visits on the first Sunday of the month, and the Revd Beverley Miles conducts a Wednesday service. Local singers and musicians regularly visit, and a Pets as Therapy volunteer visits once a month with her gorgeous miniature long haired dachshund. Surrounded by beautiful West Sussex venues, we book trips to National Trust parks and houses, garden centres, Tilgate Park, Brighton Marina, Tulleys and Holmbush farms, and the seaside.

Our rooms are all individually decorated, and residents are encouraged to bring their own furniture and personal possessions to create a true home from home. ❤️ Personalised Care Approach
At Ferndale, care is personal. We are a small, family run home registered for up to 28 residents, which means our team truly gets to know each person, their history, their preferences and their routines, and shapes their care around them. We provide 24 hour nursing care for people aged 65 and over, including dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's care and respite, and we welcome married couples and partners. Whether someone needs a little support or more complex nursing, our registered nurses and carers are always close by, day and night. Everything we do is guided by dignity, kindness and respect.
👨👩👧 Family & Visitor Policy
We warmly welcome family and friends to Ferndale Nursing Home, because we know how much these visits mean to the people we care for. You are always encouraged to come and spend time with your loved one, whether that is sharing a quiet moment in one of our en-suite rooms, enjoying our gardens together, or simply catching up over a cup of tea. Our lift ensures every part of the home is easy to reach. If you would like to join a social outing or a service, you are very welcome to do so. Should you have any questions about visiting, our registered manager, Ramesh Mannick, and the team are always happy to help. We hope every visit feels relaxed, comfortable and reassuring, so that you leave knowing your loved one is settled and well cared for.
🔒 Safety & Technology
Your loved one's safety is something we hold close to our hearts, and we have thoughtful measures in place to support it around the clock. With 24/7 nursing care, there is always a qualified member of our team on hand, day and night, ready to respond to any need. Our lift makes moving between floors easy and secure for everyone, whatever their mobility. Please do come and see how we look after everyone in our home.
✨ The Spirit of the Team
At Ferndale Nursing Home, we believe that good care grows from a happy, close knit team. With registered manager Ramesh Mannick guiding us and our senior administrator, Aoife, looking after the team we work together across nursing, hospitality and daily life to make sure no detail is overlooked. Because we are a smaller home, caring for up to 28 residents, we know each other well and can support one another through busy days and quieter moments alike. Our nurses provide round the clock care, while colleagues help with social outings, the salon and the gardens, all pulling in the same direction. This shared sense of purpose means our residents feel the warmth of people who genuinely enjoy working side by side, and who take real pride in the comfort and wellbeing of everyone in our care.
🌙 Night-Time Care
When night falls at Ferndale, our home settles into a calm and gentle rhythm, and we want you to know that support is always close at hand. Our 24/7 nursing team remains awake and attentive throughout the night, ready to help whenever we are needed, whether that is with medication, comfort or simply a reassuring word. For residents living with dementia, Parkinson's or those receiving palliative and end of life care, we understand that the small hours can feel unsettling, so we take time to offer quiet company and a soothing presence. With every one of our en-suite rooms just a moment away, we are able to respond promptly and with care. Our aim is that each resident feels safe, warm and looked after, resting peacefully through the night.

At Ferndale Nursing Home, we welcome people from all walks of life, and we believe that the differences between us are something to be valued. We take time to understand each person as an individual, learning about the traditions, beliefs and everyday preferences that matter to them. Our head chef is always happy to talk with residents and families about the meals that feel familiar and comforting, and our chapel offers a quiet space for reflection. Through our social outings and the shared moments of daily life here, we hope everyone feels able to be themselves. Whether someone is with us for respite, a short stay or a permanent home, we want them to feel understood, respected and truly at home among us.
🐾 Pet Policy & Animal Therapy
A Pets as Therapy (PAT) volunteer visits Ferndale once a month with her gorgeous miniature long haired dachshund. Residents love spending time with the dog, whether stroking, chatting or simply enjoying its calming presence. These monthly visits are one of the small, meaningful touches that help make Ferndale feel like a true home.
♻️ Sustainability & Green Initiatives
Caring for our environment matters to us at Ferndale Nursing Home, and we try to weave small, thoughtful habits into everyday life here in Crawley. Our gardens give us a lovely way to stay connected to nature, and residents who enjoy pottering outdoors are always welcome to join us. In the kitchen, our head chef plans meals with care to make the most of what we have and to reduce waste where we can. We are mindful about how we use energy and resources across the home, from lighting to heating, so that our surroundings stay comfortable without being wasteful. These are simple, steady steps rather than grand gestures, but we believe they help us look after both the people in our care and the world around us.
🕊️ End-of-Life Advocacy & Dignity
When someone reaches the final chapter of their life, we consider it a privilege to walk alongside them and those they love. Our 24/7 nursing team provides gentle, attentive palliative and end of life care, always led by comfort, respect and the wishes of each person. We take time to understand what matters most, whether that is a quiet moment, a familiar face at the bedside, or simply peace and reassurance. Families are welcome here at any hour, and we do all we can to support them too. With en-suite rooms offering privacy and calm, we aim to make these days as gentle and dignified as possible. Above all, we promise to be present, to listen, and to care for each person with kindness right to the end.

I attended the Summer BBQ at Ferndale Nursery Home whilst visiting my Nan who has been a resident for 3 years. Not only do the staff always do a fantastic job all year round, today they put on a wonderful afternoon for the families. The food was fabulous in no short supply with a great range of drinks and desserts. The staff were very attentive in serving us accompanied with a live music act and a fun raffle to top it off. It was wonderful to see Nan out and about with the other residents. So thank you to everyone for such a lovely afternoon.

This is the most caring home I could have wished for my husband in his last weeks. I was continually updated on his well-being and what was being done for him. I was allowed to spend some time with him just before he passed. We were treated with dignity and respect. I cannot thank them enough for the care provided and would wholeheartedly recommend this home.
