    • Care Home

We at Fleming Court are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne, providing dedicated older person care, dementia support, and a wide range of specialist care within a comfortable community setting. Nestled in the vibrant city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, our home benefits from its location in the North East, offering residents the reassurance of familiar surroundings alongside easy access for visiting family and friends. Our residential setting is designed to feel like home, with communal spaces that encourage friendship and conversation, alongside quieter areas where residents can enjoy peaceful moments of reflection or spend private time with loved ones. Our care goes beyond the everyday. We specialise in supporting older people, adults living with dementia, individuals with physical disabilities, and those with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for families who need short term support, whether that be following a hospital stay, during a family holiday, or simply to provide a trusted break from caring responsibilities at home. In practice, this means our team takes the time to truly understand each resident as an individual. For someone living with dementia, that might mean gentle routines, familiar reminders, and a calm environment that helps reduce anxiety. For a resident with a visual or hearing impairment, it means thoughtful communication and an environment adapted to their needs. For families, it means peace of mind knowing that a loved one is being cared for with dignity, patience, and genuine warmth every single day. We are proud that the Care Quality Commission has rated us Good overall, following our most recent inspection in November 2025. What means the most to us, however, is our Outstanding rating for being Caring. This reflects the heart of who we are: a team that treats every resident as part of our extended family. Alongside this, we have been rated Good for being Safe, Effective, Responsive, and Well led, providing families with the reassurance that every aspect of life at our home is thoughtfully managed and continually improving. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions that come with it. We warmly invite you to get in touch with us at Fleming Court to arrange a visit, meet our team, and see for yourself the compassionate community we have built here in Newcastle Upon Tyne. We would be honoured to support your family through this next chapter.

    • Care Home

Byker Lodge in Newcastle upon Tyne provides residential care to older people and younger adults, including many residents living with dementia. We want people who move in to find that it becomes home before long, and that families can stop worrying about the decision they have made. Much of that comes down to ordinary things done consistently. Getting up when you want to. Meals cooked here that people look forward to. Help with washing and dressing given calmly and with dignity. Enough support to move about safely without feeling hemmed in. Dementia care forms a large part of our work. We keep the rhythm of the day predictable, give people time to respond, and spend real effort learning who a person has been. That history is usually what allows us to reach someone who is distressed, and it improves everyday conversation too. Visitors are welcome and we do not treat visiting as an interruption. Come for a meal, join in with an activity, or take your relative out for the afternoon. We also provide respite care for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we would be pleased to show you round.

    • Care Home

Cestria House is a residential home in Newcastle Upon Tyne for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. The house runs on the idea that people have moved home rather than moved into a system. People get up when they wake, eat when they are hungry, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, and spend the day where they choose, in company or quietly on their own. Help with washing, dressing and getting about is given when it is wanted and as discreetly as we can manage. Dementia care here is mostly about steadiness. Familiar faces, a predictable rhythm to the day, and staff who know somebody's history well enough to understand what lies behind a difficult afternoon. We gather that history with families when a person arrives and keep adding to it, so the knowledge belongs to the home rather than leaving at the end of a shift. Meals are cooked on the premises and matter a great deal to how people feel. There is something going on most days for anyone who wants it, and no pressure on those who do not. We keep an eye on health without turning the place into a clinic and tell families what is happening rather than waiting to be asked. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

Bowland Lodge is a care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also support people working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs, and we offer respite stays. Because the people living here have genuinely different needs, we plan care one person at a time. What settles somebody with dementia is not what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition, and neither resembles what helps somebody in recovery from dependence. One routine stretched across all of that would suit nobody. So we spend our attention on particulars: how a person likes to be addressed, what they can still do and would rather do themselves, what tends to make a bad day and what heads it off early. Where our work touches addiction we go carefully and without judgement, because recovery rarely runs in a straight line and being steady on the difficult weeks is most of what we are for. Where sight or hearing loss is involved, habits matter more than equipment. Saying who you are as you come into a room. Leaving furniture exactly where it lives. Checking that hearing aids and glasses are clean and working. People here decide when they get up, what they eat and how they spend the day, and visitors are welcome whenever suits them.

Our home provides a welcoming environment where older people, including those living with dementia, can enjoy comfort, dignity, and companionship every day. Whether the stay is planned in advance or arranged at shorter notice, we aim to make every guest feel welcomed and settled from the moment they arrive. In practice, this means our residents can expect thoughtful, person centred support with the everyday tasks that keep life comfortable and enjoyable, from personal care and medication management to companionship and encouragement to take part in social activities. Families can take comfort in knowing that their loved one is surrounded by a team who genuinely care about their wellbeing. We are pleased to hold an overall "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, achieving "Good" across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This independent recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering care that families can trust, and to maintaining the standards that residents rightly expect. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand that it often comes at a time of uncertainty. If you are exploring options for a loved one in Newcastle upon Tyne, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Sutherland Court. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about life in our home, and help you feel confident about the next steps.

Whether it's joining in with a group activity, enjoying a home cooked meal, or spending quiet time with visiting family, every moment is approached with kindness and patience. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our most recent CQC inspection, where we were rated Good overall. We are particularly proud to have achieved an Outstanding rating in the Responsive domain, which recognises how well we tailor care to meet each resident's individual needs and preferences. • Care Home

Garden Lodge is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We keep our work deliberately focused. Residential care for older people is what we do, and we would rather do it attentively than spread ourselves across every kind of need. Residents tell us when they like to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they prefer to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to offer reassurance when someone is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. Independence is protected wherever it exists, and company matters as much as practical help. Families are welcome whenever they want to visit and we would far rather hear a concern early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We at Ferguson Lodge are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, providing a warm and welcoming home for older people who need thoughtful, professional support in their later years. Our setting in the North East places us within a familiar community, giving residents the reassurance of remaining close to the places, people, and rhythms of life they know best. Families visiting from across Newcastle and the wider NE postcode area will find us accessible and easy to reach, whether for a planned visit or a spontaneous cup of tea with a loved one. We have created an environment that feels calm, homely, and dignified, where residents can relax in comfortable surroundings and enjoy the companionship of others. Care at Ferguson Lodge is shaped around the individual. Alongside residential care for older people, we offer specialised support for those living with dementia, taking time to understand each person's history, preferences, and routines so that daily life feels reassuring rather than confusing. Our team is also experienced in supporting residents with mental health needs, physical disability, and visual or hearing impairment, ensuring that care is adapted sensitively to whatever challenges a person may face. For families who need a short break or are considering longer term arrangements, our respite care offers a trusted, flexible option, giving carers at home the chance to rest whilst their loved one is looked after with genuine warmth. What this means in practice is straightforward. Residents are treated as individuals first, with support tailored to how they want to live each day, from the pace of their morning routine to the activities that bring them joy. Families are kept involved and informed, welcomed as partners in care rather than visitors on the edge of it. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most emotional decisions a family can make, and we take that trust seriously. Following our most recent CQC inspection in October 2025, Ferguson Lodge was rated Good overall, with Good ratings across every domain assessed: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this consistency offers meaningful reassurance. It reflects a home where safety is prioritised, care is effective, staff are genuinely caring, the home responds to residents' changing needs, and leadership sets a steady, considered tone throughout. If you are exploring care options for someone dear to you, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Ferguson Lodge. Whether you are looking for permanent residential care, dedicated dementia support, or a short respite stay, we would be glad to talk through your questions, share more about daily life here, and help you feel confident about the road ahead.

Kirkwood Court is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody has, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

Ella McCambridge is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than simply managed well. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. We support residents living with dementia, where familiar staff and a routine that holds steady are what genuinely help. We care for residents living with mental health conditions, where a calm environment and early attention to changes matter greatly, and we support younger adults, planning their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out here ourselves than have a family come across it later and wonder why we kept quiet. The areas identified are where our effort is going at present. Please visit on an ordinary day, speak to residents and their relatives, and ask us about it directly.

At West Farm Care Centre, we provide residential and dementia care for older people in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is to give a family carer a much needed break or to support someone during a period of recovery or transition. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the very first conversation, we aim to make people feel heard and unhurried. We want to get to know the person coming to live with us, not just their care needs, but their preferences, their routines, their sense of humour and what makes them feel at home. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels genuinely homely and calm. For those living with dementia, we know how much the little details matter, familiar faces, consistent routines and an atmosphere free from unnecessary stress. We think carefully about how we can support each person to live as well as possible, whatever that looks like for them individually. We are pleased to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the honest, everyday efforts of our whole team. It means a great deal to us, though we never see it as a reason to stop looking for ways to do better. If you are considering West Farm Care Centre for yourself or someone you love, we would warmly encourage you to get in touch or come and see us in person. A visit will always tell you far more than any written description can, and we are genuinely happy to answer any questions you might have along the way.

    • Care Home

Cranlea is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne, caring for older people, including many living with dementia. Families usually reach us tired. The decision to move a relative into a care home is rarely taken lightly and often follows a long stretch of managing at home with too little help. One of the most useful things we can do early is take some of that weight off, be honest about what we can and cannot offer, and make it possible for a daughter or a husband to go back to being family rather than a carer who never gets an evening off. For the person moving in, the first weeks are what count. We want to know how they have always run their day, what they are proud of, who they want to hear from, what unsettles them and what makes an afternoon good. We write it down, we use it, and we keep correcting it as we learn. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone considering Cranlea is welcome to visit and take their time.

Comfort House is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home alone, including a good many living with dementia, and some younger adults. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about where that line falls. What we do is the daily work of helping somebody wash and dress, take their medicines, eat properly, move about safely and stay connected to other people. Done well that is a skilled job and it depends almost entirely on whether staff know the person, so keeping our team is where most of our effort goes rather than into refurbishment. For residents with dementia we have found steadiness beats stimulation. The same faces, meals at the same times, a bedroom that looks like the person's own room, and nothing moved without a reason. Within that there is plenty going on, and a great deal of tea. We want relatives in the building often rather than confined to visiting hours, and we would rather be told promptly when we have got something wrong. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Call in and see us, with or without warning.

    • Care Home

Ashfield Court is a residential care home in North Tyneside. We care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia and those whose physical disability means they need help to move about safely. We also support some younger adults. The care we give is practical and personal: help to wash and dress, medication given properly, meals cooked here, support to get about and staff available at any hour. Around that, people arrange their own days. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own room, and neither needs explaining to us. Dementia care here rests on familiarity. Keeping staff, routines and surroundings consistent takes a good deal of anxiety out of the day, so we plan rotas with that in mind and we ask families for the history that helps us make sense of somebody when words are hard to find. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a planned break or to help somebody regain their confidence after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families on Tyneside are welcome to visit. Please ring and we will show you round.

Woodley Hall Care Home is a residential care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. We support older people who need help with daily living, residents living with dementia or a mental health condition, people with a physical disability, those living with a visual or hearing impairment, and adults working through problems with alcohol or drugs. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. We support a broad mix of people, so we plan around individuals rather than categories. Residents decide when to get up, how to spend their time and what they eat. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered. Staff take time to learn what settles a particular person and what unsettles them, and we do not judge anyone for the difficulties that brought them here. We need to be straightforward about our last inspection. The Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We accepted the findings rather than disputing them, drew up an improvement plan and are working through it, with closer oversight of the areas the inspectors raised. We would much rather tell you this ourselves and let you judge the progress for yourself. We work closely with GPs, community mental health teams and district nurses so that health concerns are dealt with quickly, and we keep families properly informed. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time. If you are considering the home, please come and look round and ask us the difficult questions.

Derwent Care Home is a residential care home near Newcastle Upon Tyne providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We try to keep the home domestic rather than institutional. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. Some are in company from breakfast onwards and some would far rather have their own room and the paper, and neither preference draws any comment from us. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and move around in. The area is home for most of the people living here, and family are welcome whenever they wish to come. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Farmhouse Residential Rest Home is a care home in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. We provide a permanent home for adults with a range of needs, and we aim for a household where people are known properly rather than managed efficiently. Most of the people living here receive residential care. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. We support residents living with dementia, where familiar staff and a routine that does not shift about are the things that genuinely help. We also support adults with a learning disability or autism, adults living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, which means adapting how we communicate and how we assist person by person rather than running one approach for everybody. We support younger adults as well, and we do not assume their interests or routines match those of our older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and allowing somebody to try the home before making a permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit on an ordinary day, speak to the people who live here and form your own impression of the place.

Florence House is a residential care home in Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia or with mental ill health, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Residents keep their own routines and their own things around them, choose how they spend the day and what they eat, and are helped with washing, dressing, medication and getting about in the way that suits them. Supporting a mixed group works when everybody is treated as an individual. Some people want quiet and routine, others want company and activity, and both are entirely reasonable ways to live. For people living with dementia, our team relies on knowing the person, their history and the things that reassure them. For those with a sensory impairment, we think carefully about lighting, sound and how we approach somebody. Families are welcome here at any reasonable time and we keep in touch with them honestly rather than waiting for a crisis. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The Maples Residential Home is a care home in Newcastle under Lyme. We look after older people who have found that managing alone has become more of a struggle than a pleasure, including many people living with dementia. We try to keep life here ordinary. People get up when they wake, eat food they recognise and enjoy, and spend the day as they choose, in company or quietly on their own. Good dementia care is mostly a matter of unremarkable things done consistently, familiar faces, meals at the times someone expects them, routines that hold together from one day to the next, and staff with enough time to let a conversation take as long as it takes. We would rather shape our day around a person than ask a person to fall in with ours. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. We also offer respite stays, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support somebody through a period of recovery after illness or hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. The better test, we think, is whether somebody seems settled and content after a few weeks here, and that is what we keep asking ourselves. Kingsley Rest Home is a residential care home in Newcastle, Staffordshire, providing a settled home and short stays for adults who need support with everyday living. People come to us for different reasons. Sometimes keeping on top of a house had become too much. Sometimes an illness or a fall changed what was realistic. Whatever brought somebody here, our aim is that they come to think of this as home. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines and decide how their days are spent, while staff look after what has become difficult, including personal care, medication, meals and laundry. A number of the people living with us have dementia. What helps most is keeping things familiar, giving people time to answer, and knowing enough about somebody's life to be real company rather than merely helpful. We support younger adults as well as older residents, and we treat everybody here as an individual with their own history and opinions. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or somebody needs support for a few weeks after being unwell. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to see Kingsley Rest Home, please ring and arrange a visit. Samuel Hobson House is a residential care home in Newcastle, Staffordshire, looking after older people who need support with everyday living. Many of our residents live with dementia, and a number have physical disabilities. We shape the house and the day around that. Calm surroundings, clear routes through the building, good lighting and staff who take their time do more good than most things, and we use equipment and adaptations where they genuinely help rather than as a matter of course. We want this to feel like a home. Residents bring their own furniture and belongings, keep their own habits, decide how they spend the day and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is company for those who want it and somewhere quiet for those who do not. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether for a planned family break or for support while someone regains strength after illness. Relatives know the person far better than any assessment does, so we ask for what they know and keep them properly informed. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Our home is thoughtfully situated within the ST postcode area, placing us in a convenient and familiar part of Newcastle that allows residents to remain close to the community they know and love. The local setting in Staffordshire offers a comfortable backdrop for daily life, making it easy for family and friends to visit and stay involved in their loved one's journey with us. Within our walls, we strive to create a homely atmosphere where comfort, dignity, and personal preferences shape the rhythm of each day. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of care we provide. For older people, we focus on supporting independence whilst ensuring that help is always close at hand when needed. Our residential care is centred on tailored support, recognising that every resident arrives with their own life story, routines, and aspirations. For those living with dementia, we take a patient and person centred approach, working to create a calm and predictable environment that helps reduce anxiety and promotes moments of joy and connection. We also welcome younger adults, understanding that care needs can arise at any stage of life, and we adapt our approach to support meaningful, age appropriate living for every individual in our community. In practice, this means our team works closely with residents and their families to build a clear picture of what good care looks like for each person. From daily routines and meal preferences to social interests and emotional wellbeing, we aim to honour the whole person rather than focusing solely on clinical needs. Families can expect open communication, regular updates, and a genuine partnership in shaping the care of their loved one. Following our most recent CQC inspection in February 2025, we were rated Good overall, with Good ratings across the Safe, Effective, Responsive, and Well-led domains. This independent endorsement reflects the dedication of our team and the systems we have in place to keep residents safe, support their health and wellbeing, respond to changing needs, and maintain strong leadership throughout the home. We were rated Requires Improvement in the Caring domain, and we take this feedback seriously. It has become a focus of ongoing reflection and development for our team, as we work openly and consistently to strengthen the warmth, sensitivity, and personal connection that residents and families deserve. We believe transparency about this is important, and we are committed to demonstrating progress through everyday actions, listening carefully to feedback, and continuing to invest in training and culture so that compassion shines through in every interaction. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. Whether you are exploring options for an elderly parent, supporting a younger family member who needs residential care, or seeking specialist dementia support, we invite you to learn more about life at Chesterton Lodge. Our doors are open to conversations, questions, and visits, and we would be delighted to welcome you and your loved one into a community where care, respect, and reassurance are at the heart of everything we do.

Hempstalls Hall Care Home provides residential care in Newcastle Under Lyme for older people and for younger adults who need support with daily living. We also support people living with dementia and people living with physical disabilities. We work at the pace of the people who live here. That means breakfast when someone wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, a day shaped around what a person actually enjoys, and help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility given in a way that leaves dignity intact. For people living with dementia we keep routines steady and faces familiar. Our staff tend to stay with us for a long time, and that continuity does more to settle somebody than any amount of process ever could. We also take trouble over the building itself, so that it is easy to understand and to move around. Families are part of the picture rather than visitors to be managed. Greenbrook Court, part of Choices Housing Association, is a residential care home in Newcastle under Lyme. We support older people who need help with daily living, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group well depends on treating each person as an individual rather than as a category. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of hands on help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want a settled home and support that is available when they ask. For autistic people, predictability is a need rather than a preference, so changes are explained in advance, staffing is kept consistent where we can, and noise, light and busyness are taken seriously. For residents living with dementia we keep routines and surroundings familiar and give people time rather than hurrying them. For those with physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss, the emphasis is on equipment that fits, safe transfers and unhurried communication. Wherever we can, we do things alongside people rather than for them, because a skill used is a skill kept. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to know.

We support older people and younger adults with a wide span of needs, including residents living with dementia, adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults, residents with mental health needs, residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. This is a house in an ordinary street, and that is the point. The people who live here are part of the local community rather than set apart from it, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose. Support is planned one person at a time. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with meals, medication and appointments, and with the practical business of running a home. We also support people to get out locally and to stay close to family and friends. Communication and routine are at the centre of good support here. We take time to learn how each person prefers information to be given, how they tell us that something is wrong and which parts of the day need to stay the same. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms are arranged. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Newcastle

Twenty seven residential care homes appear on this page, and the sensible way through them is to treat the ratings as a filter rather than a verdict. Twenty four currently hold a Good rating, two sit at Requires Improvement and one has been judged Inadequate, which means there is a solid field to choose from provided you check the report behind each entry. All twenty seven are residential care homes, offering personal care and daily support rather than the on site nursing cover found in a dementia nursing home.

The Things Worth Looking For On A Visit

Dementia care is largely made or broken by staffing, so begin there. Ask how many carers are on shift at the quietest point of the day, how many hold dementia specific training, and how long people tend to stay in post, because a settled team recognises the small changes that matter. Beyond the staffing, look for a building that helps rather than confuses: short, well lit corridors, contrasting colours at doorways, a garden residents can walk into freely and quiet corners for someone who finds a lounge overwhelming. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed in the evening, and listen for an answer about reassurance and familiar routine rather than one about medication.

Making Sense Of An Inspection Rating

Ratings describe a home as inspectors found it on one particular visit, so always read the report rather than stopping at the headline word. Where a home has been rated Requires Improvement, find out which of the five assessed areas fell short and ask the manager what has changed since; concerns about record keeping sit very differently from concerns about safety. The home currently rated Inadequate should not be ruled out without reading its report either, though you would want firm evidence of improvement and a frank conversation about oversight before considering it. Check the inspection date too, since a Good rating awarded some years ago may predate a change of ownership or management.

The Care Needs Assessment Comes First

A care needs assessment is the usual starting point, and it is worth asking for one even where a family intends to pay privately, because it produces an impartial written description of the support a person requires. Assessments can be requested through Staffordshire County Council social care team, which holds the statutory duty to assess eligible residents and to arrange funded care where the criteria are met. A financial assessment follows separately, considering income, savings and any property. Anyone providing unpaid care for a relative is entitled to a carer's assessment of their own, which is easy to overlook in a stressful fortnight.

Fees, Funding And The Gaps In Between

Costs differ from home to home on this list according to room size, the intensity of support needed and whether a place is privately funded or commissioned, so ask every shortlisted provider for a written fee schedule. Establish exactly what the weekly figure includes, as hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments and trips out are frequently billed on top. Where the council funds a place it pays up to its own agreed rate, and a family who prefers a home charging more than that may be asked for a top up, an arrangement that should always be documented before a move. Residents with substantial clinical needs alongside dementia may also be eligible for a National Health Service contribution through continuing healthcare, which is assessed under a different process.

Every entry links through to a profile carrying the provider's current rating and the date of its last inspection. Comparing a handful of profiles at once is the fastest way to turn the full list into a realistic shortlist.

What separates a dementia care home from a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides a place to live, personal care and help with daily routines such as washing, dressing, meals and prompting medication, drawing on visiting district nurses when health needs arise. A dementia nursing home keeps registered nurses on duty at all times and can therefore manage ongoing clinical care, including wound management, assisted feeding and complicated medication. All of the providers listed on this page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If a relative already has notable medical needs on top of their dementia, raise that with the assessing social worker before you start arranging visits.

What questions should I put to a home when I visit?

Ask who will be looking after your relative overnight and at weekends, what dementia training those staff have completed, and how often the care plan is revisited. Ask how the home communicates with families when something changes, whether that is a fall, a new medication or a shift in mood. Request to see the actual room on offer rather than a presentation room, and try to call in near a mealtime so you can watch how unhurried the support feels. Pay as much attention to how staff speak to residents who cannot easily reply as you do to the formal answers you receive.

How is a care needs assessment arranged for someone in Newcastle?

Approach the adult social care team at Staffordshire County Council, which must assess anyone who appears to need care and support. An assessor will look at what the person manages independently, where they struggle and what they want their life to look like, usually meeting them at home or on a hospital ward. You may make the request for a relative with their consent, and if you care for them unpaid you can ask for your own assessment in parallel. Request a written copy once it is finished, because it answers many of the questions individual homes will ask you.

Will the council pay towards a dementia care home place?

Staffordshire County Council may fund a placement where its assessment establishes that residential care is the right answer and a financial assessment shows capital and income below the national thresholds. Support is often partial rather than total, with the resident contributing from income and the council covering the balance. If the family chooses a home that charges above the rate the council will meet, a third party top up may be required and should be confirmed in writing first. Where nursing needs are significant it is also worth asking about National Health Service continuing healthcare, which follows its own assessment route.

How early should the search for a home begin?

Start sooner than seems urgent, while your relative can still express a view about where they would like to live. Sought after homes in the Newcastle listing frequently have waiting lists for particular rooms, so allowing two or three months is realistic rather than cautious. An early start also lets you visit a home more than once, at different times of day, and judge it on an ordinary afternoon instead of a tidied one. When a move is prompted by a hospital discharge the decision may have to be made within days, which is precisely why a shortlist drawn up calmly in advance is so valuable.
