    • Care Home

The Emmie Dixon Home is a residential care home in Crewe, Cheshire. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays. Because the people who live here need quite different things, we take care to be specific rather than general. Where somebody has a physical disability, we put real effort into the practical detail, because equipment, hoists, transfers, seating and access are what decide whether a person can get where they want to go and do things for themselves. Where somebody has a learning disability or is autistic, we concentrate on predictable routines, clear information given in good time, and understanding how that individual communicates, whether that is through speech, signs, symbols, a device or their behaviour. Where dementia is part of the picture, we keep the day recognisable and the same familiar staff around. Beyond that, this is somebody's home. People choose how their rooms look, have a real say in the shopping and the meals, and decide how their week is spent, with support to get out to whatever interests them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and see how we work.

    • Care Home

The Elms Residential Care Home is in Crewe, providing care for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own, and supporting younger adults who need residential care. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a real say in how their day is spent. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. Respite stays are available too, whether somebody needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a genuine break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is whether people who live here seem settled and whether relatives feel able to raise something with us early. • Care Home

Mayfield House is a residential care home in Crewe, Cheshire, caring for older people, including many living with dementia. Families usually reach us tired. The decision to move a relative into a care home is rarely taken lightly and often follows a long stretch of managing at home with too little help. One of the most useful things we can do early is take some of that weight off, be honest about what we can and cannot offer, and make it possible for a daughter or a husband to go back to being family rather than a carer who never gets an evening off. For the person moving in, the first weeks are what count. We want to know how they have always run their day, what they are proud of, who they want to hear from, what unsettles them and what makes an afternoon good. We write it down, we use it, and we keep correcting it as we learn. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Anyone considering Mayfield House is welcome to visit, ask difficult questions and take their time over the decision.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Crewe

Where a home has been rated Inadequate

Where a home has been rated Inadequate, nothing should be taken on trust from a brochure. Mayfield House holds that rating, so read the report in full, note exactly what inspectors found, and ask the manager what has changed, when it changed and what evidence exists for it. The Emmie Dixon Home and The Elms Residential Care Home are both rated Good, and their reports will name their own strengths. Check the date of every inspection, since judgements age and a home may be in a different position now, for better or worse.

What dementia care asks of a home

Ask what dementia training the staff have completed and how often it is refreshed, how many carers are on duty overnight and how settled the team is, because familiar faces matter a great deal. Watch how someone repeating a question is answered, and whether residents are helped to move about rather than left seated for long stretches. Ask how the home handles disturbed nights, refusal of food and walking with purpose, and whether the garden can be used safely without supervision. Visit once by arrangement and once unannounced, ideally near a mealtime.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Crewe

Asking for the assessment

Anyone who may need care can ask for an assessment of need, free of charge and whatever their savings, and it records how someone manages washing, dressing, medication, eating, orientation and risk at home. Ask Cheshire East Council Adult Social Care to carry it out and to arrange the financial assessment that follows, which decides whether funded support applies. Where there is a diagnosis, ask for it and the current medication list to be included, since homes rely on that detail when deciding whether they can meet the need.

Fees and what shapes them

Fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with extras such as hairdressing, chiropody and outings charged on top. A place in a unit designed around dementia can carry a higher fee, so ask what it buys in staffing and training terms. Where capital falls below the national threshold, the council may contribute after its financial assessment, and above it the place is funded privately. Ask what happens if nursing care becomes necessary, because not every home can keep someone through that change.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Crewe

How many dementia care homes are there in Crewe?

Crewe has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 8 CQC registered care homes in Crewe: 2 Good, 1 Inadequate. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Crewe were inspected most recently?

The Emmie Dixon Home (7 September 2026), Mayfield House (28 October 2025) and The Elms Residential Care Home (5 February 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Crewe offer dementia care?

Three registered care homes match this search: The Emmie Dixon Home, The Elms Residential Care Home and Mayfield House. All three are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Two hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and one is rated Inadequate. Each profile sets out the provider details and the current rating.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

Both support people living with dementia, but the registration differs. A care home provides help with daily living from trained care staff, while a nursing home also keeps a qualified nurse on the premises at all times for wounds, feeding tubes, injections and unstable conditions. The homes on this page are registered for residential care. If nursing needs are likely to develop, raise that during the assessment so the right registration is considered.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Crewe?

Ask what dementia training staff have completed and how many carers are on duty overnight. Ask how the home supports someone who becomes distressed, how disturbed nights are handled and what happens when food is refused. Where a home has been rated Inadequate or told to improve, ask precisely what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Finish by asking what happens if nursing care becomes necessary later.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Crewe?

Contact Cheshire East Council and ask for an adult social care needs assessment for the person living with dementia. An assessor will go through memory, medication, mobility, daily routines and safety at home, on a visit or by telephone. The assessment is free and does not depend on income or savings. The written outcome is what homes will want to read before offering a place.

Can Cheshire East Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can contribute where the needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. The council pays up to the rate it will meet and the resident contributes from income such as pensions. Above the threshold, the placement is funded privately until savings fall to that level. Where a property is involved, ask about a deferred payment arrangement.

How early should we start looking?

Dementia progresses unevenly, so looking before a move becomes urgent is wise. Where it can be planned, two or three months allows for the assessment, repeat visits and a funding decision. Rooms suited to dementia care are limited and may not be free in the week you need one. Where inspection records vary this widely, having time to read them properly matters more than usual.
