    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Sandbach, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where somebody needs help with moving about, we give it without doing more of the task than is needed. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come. Please come and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Turnpike Court Residential Care Home is in Sandbach. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite and short stays. We try to run a household rather than a facility. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures, keep the routines they have always had and decide how much they want to be involved in what is going on. Some want company from breakfast onwards. Others want the paper, their own room and a visit from family. Both are entirely fine. When somebody joins us we spend time learning their history and their preferences, and we record it so that every member of staff knows it rather than only the person who did the assessment. Care that depends on who is on shift is not care we would want for our own relatives. Dementia support here is built on familiarity and pace. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, we avoid unnecessary change and we find out what settles a particular person. Families get honest updates from us rather than comfortable ones, because being kept in the dark is worse than bad news. Meals are cooked on the premises with residents having a real say in the menu, and visitors are welcome throughout the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round, ideally without telling us you are coming.

    • Care Home

Elworth Grange is a residential care home in Sandbach, Cheshire East. We support older people and younger adults, residents living with dementia, and residents whose mental health means that a settled and predictable place matters a great deal. Our approach is unglamorous and it works. We find out in detail how a person has been living, what they want to carry on doing themselves, where help would be welcome and where it would not, and we write that down so that every shift works the same way. A resident should not have to negotiate their own routine afresh with whoever happens to be on duty. For residents with dementia we keep things familiar and unhurried, and we look for the reason behind distress rather than simply trying to calm it. Where mental health is the primary need we work patiently and without drama, alongside community teams where that helps, and we do not treat a difficult stretch as a setback to be explained away. Food, fresh air, a quiet room when the lounge is too busy, and visitors at the hour that suits them cover most of what people actually ask us for, so we make sure those are right before anything else. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, to drop in unannounced, and to speak with residents and families directly.

    • Care Home

Elworth Grange is a residential care home in Sandbach, Cheshire, providing a settled and comfortable place to live for older people and younger adults who need support nearby. We aim to run like a household rather than an institution, with the day led by the people living it. We support residents living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, and people living with sight or hearing loss. In each case the approach starts with knowing the person properly: their history, their habits, what settles them and what does not. We keep routines familiar, explain changes before they happen and give people time rather than hurrying them along. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and just as much with the things that make a day worth having, whether that is company, quiet, fresh air, music or a decent conversation. Relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period, or for families who need a rest. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in this part of Cheshire, please come and see us at an ordinary time of day and ask us anything you like.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Sandbach

Dementia makes particular demands of a building and of a staff team, and those demands are what should drive the comparison here. All 4 providers listed for Sandbach are registered with the Care Quality Commission as residential care homes, which means accommodation together with personal care rather than nursing delivered on site by qualified nurses. Where a condition is likely to bring clinical needs with it, that distinction becomes important.

What dementia training should mean in practice

Ask what training the staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and whether it extends to the night team as well as the day shift. Then ask how it shows itself: how staff respond when a resident repeats a question for the twentieth time, what they do when someone becomes convinced they must leave for work, and how a person is helped to the bathroom without alarm. Ask how long most of the team have been in post, because familiar faces reduce confusion more reliably than any programme of activities.

How the building and the day are organised

Look at whether residents can find their own room unaided, whether there is somewhere safe to walk when restlessness sets in, and whether outdoor space can be used without supervision being arranged first. Ask how the late afternoon and early evening are occupied, since that is when distress is often at its worst. Turnpike Court Residential Care Home, Park House Care Home and Elworth Grange all hold a Good rating, so read each report for what inspectors said on exactly these points, and check the date, because a home can change a good deal between inspections.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Sandbach

The care needs assessment

A free care needs assessment is the proper first step and the entitlement does not depend on savings. The duty rests with Cheshire East Council adult social care, which establishes what help is required, whether the eligibility criteria are met, and what funded support should follow. A financial assessment then looks at income and capital. A relative providing regular unpaid care can claim a carer's assessment of their own.

What dementia care tends to cost

Fees reflect the room, the building and the level of supervision required, and dementia care is often charged at a higher rate because of the staffing it needs. Ask for a written breakdown and check what is billed as an extra. Where capital falls below the national threshold the council may contribute; above it the place is normally funded privately, and NHS continuing healthcare is assessed separately where the need is mainly a health one.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Sandbach

How many dementia care homes are there in Sandbach?

Sandbach has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care: 4 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Sandbach were inspected most recently?

Elworth Grange (5 September 2023), Elworth Grange (5 September 2023) and Turnpike Court Residential Care Home (2 September 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Sandbach provide dementia care?

4 residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission appear in this Sandbach listing. They are Turnpike Court Residential Care Home, Park House Care Home and Elworth Grange. All three currently hold a Good rating, and each has its own profile on Care Assura setting out its registration. With a list this short it is worth reading every profile rather than stopping at the first.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home registered for dementia provides accommodation with personal care, so staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and daily routines, with training geared to memory loss. A nursing home holds a registration requiring qualified nurses on site, which lets it manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, tube feeding or unstable conditions alongside dementia. All 4 providers in this Sandbach listing are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely as the condition advances, consider nursing registered homes from the outset.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Sandbach?

Ask what dementia training the staff receive, whether the night team receives it too, and how long most of the team have worked there. Find out how the late afternoon and early evening are occupied, and how staff respond when a resident becomes distressed or insists on leaving. Ask whether residents can find their own room unaided and whether there is somewhere safe to walk. Request the contract and the complaints procedure in writing before you commit.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Sandbach?

Contact the adult social care team at Cheshire East Council, which has a legal duty to assess anyone who appears to need care and support whatever their finances. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative, or from a professional such as a memory clinic, general practitioner or hospital discharge coordinator. An assessor will discuss daily tasks, memory, safety at home and the support already in place, then explain which needs are eligible. Ask for the outcome and the support plan in writing, as both help when approaching homes.

Can Cheshire East Council fund a dementia care placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. Contributions are calculated individually, and most people pay something towards fees from income such as pensions. Above the threshold a placement is usually funded privately, although a deferred payment arrangement secured against a property is sometimes possible. Request both assessments early, because arranging them takes time.

How soon should we start looking at dementia care?

Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia progresses unevenly and a suitable home may have a waiting list. Looking while the person can still take part in the decision also means their own preferences shape the outcome. Allowing a few weeks gives time to visit properly, read the inspection reports and get the council assessments moving. If a crisis or a hospital stay forces the pace, a shortlist prepared in advance makes an enormous difference.
