What nursing care in West Sussex involves and what to look for
A nursing home is registered for accommodation with nursing, which means registered nurses are employed on the premises alongside care staff. That is the essential difference from a residential home, and it determines what a home can safely take on.
When nursing registration matters
Nursing care becomes necessary where there are wounds requiring dressing, complex or injectable medication, a feeding tube, catheter care, or a condition needing regular clinical monitoring. A residential home cannot provide these things in house, which is why a placement in the wrong category often leads to a second move. Ask each home which clinical needs it routinely manages and which it would decline, because registration alone does not guarantee experience of a particular condition.
Reading the inspection reports
Ratings here include Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement, with some homes awaiting a first judgement. Go past the summary word into the individual key questions, since a nursing home can be caring and well led while showing weaker findings on safety, which in this setting often means medication or staffing. Note the date of the inspection, and where a home sits below Good, ask what has changed and what evidence supports it. A home without a rating may simply have registered recently.
Questions specific to nursing homes
Ask how many registered nurses are on duty by day and overnight, and whether nursing shifts are ever covered by agency staff who do not know the residents. Find out how the home works with GPs, community specialists and palliative care teams, and what happens when someone becomes acutely unwell at night. Ask how pressure care, falls and pain management are handled, and how families are kept informed when a resident's condition changes.
Getting an assessment and sorting out funding in West Sussex
Funding a nursing placement can involve more than one source, so it is worth understanding the sequence before committing to anything.
The care needs assessment
Any adult who appears to need care and support can request a free assessment, with no financial test beforehand. It examines personal care, mobility, cognition, clinical needs and the support already in place, and establishes whether nursing care is required. Referrals may be made by the person, a relative, a GP or a hospital discharge team. West Sussex County Council adult social care completes the assessment and records the eligible needs any placement must meet.
Fees, contributions and the NHS element
The financial assessment compares capital and income with national thresholds, and above the upper capital limit fees are met privately. Where nursing care is required, an NHS funded nursing care contribution is paid towards the nursing element regardless of means, and it goes to the home rather than to the resident. Some people with substantial ongoing health needs may qualify for NHS continuing healthcare, which covers the full package, so ask whether an assessment for it is appropriate. Deferred payment agreements can help where a property is the main asset.
Before agreeing a placement
Read the contract for notice periods, fee reviews and how the NHS contribution is applied to the account. Ask what happens if clinical needs increase or if a hospital admission is needed, and whether the room is held. Visit twice, at different times, and include an evening if you can.
