Choosing a nursing home in Norfolk and what to look for
What the spread of grades is telling you
Thirty one of the sixty homes listed here are rated Good and three are rated Outstanding, namely Meadow House Nursing Home, Ford Place Nursing Home and Hassingham House Care Centre. Seventeen have been told they require improvement, four are rated Inadequate and five carry no grade yet. With a spread that wide, sorting by the headline word alone will not serve you well. Read the reports of any home you are seriously considering, because inspectors set out precisely what concerned them, and a shortfall in record keeping sits in a different category from one in how residents are treated.
What nursing registration means in practice
Every provider on this page is registered to provide nursing care, which means a registered nurse is on duty through the day and the night. That matters where someone needs wound dressings, a catheter or stoma managed, insulin administered, a feeding tube maintained or close observation of a condition that changes quickly. If the person needs help with washing, dressing and meals but nothing clinical, a residential home is likely to suit better and usually costs less. Establish which is required before touring anywhere, because the answer decides the shortlist.
Questions worth pressing on
Ask how many registered nurses are on each shift rather than whether nursing is available, and ask how gaps are covered when someone is off. Ask how often agency nurses are used, since a home that leans heavily on them will struggle with continuity. Bring the specific clinical need into the conversation and ask for a concrete example of how it has been managed before. Ask which GP practice attends, how quickly a district or specialist nurse can be called, and how the home approaches care at the end of life.
Arranging and funding a nursing placement in Norfolk
The care needs assessment
The route in begins with a care needs assessment, which is free and open to anyone who appears to need care whatever their savings. A social worker, sometimes with a nurse, records what a person can manage, what they cannot and what clinical support is needed, and that record is what opens the door to a nursing placement. Where the move follows a hospital stay the ward team usually starts the process. Requests can also be made directly to Norfolk County Council Adult Social Care, the authority responsible for assessing need and arranging funded care.
Health funding and social care funding
Nursing placements are paid for through two distinct routes. Where a person has a primary health need, the health service may fund the placement in full through continuing healthcare, which is assessed separately and is not means tested. Where that does not apply, a resident in a nursing home may still receive a contribution towards the nursing element, paid to the home directly. The remainder is social care and means tested, with income and capital measured against the national thresholds.
Fees, contracts and time
Nursing fees sit above residential fees because of the clinical staffing behind them, and they differ from home to home. Ask for the weekly rate in writing, what falls outside it, how often it is reviewed and what is charged during a hospital stay. Allow plenty of time as well, since assessments, funding decisions and a suitable vacancy seldom arrive together.
