Narrowing Down the Care Homes in Worthing
A shortlist of three or four homes is worth far more than a list of fifty five, so the first job is working out what would rule a home out. Location relative to the people who will visit most often, the type of care registered for, and whether the home can meet specific needs such as dementia support will usually reduce the field quickly. Only then does it make sense to look closely at what inspectors have said about the homes that remain.
Making Sense of the Inspection Ratings
Of the homes listed here, one is rated Outstanding, forty one Good and eleven Requires Improvement, while two have not yet been rated. That proportion of Requires Improvement ratings is worth pausing over, though not as an automatic exclusion. The rating summarises five key questions, and a home may be marked down on one of them, such as how it is led or how records are kept, while care at the bedside was found to be kind and competent. Read the report to see which area was criticised, how serious the finding was and what the home was required to do about it.
What a Visit Tells You That a Report Cannot
Reports age, and homes change with a new manager or a new owner, so check the date on any inspection before you lean on it. Arrange to visit at a busy time of day rather than a quiet one, and pay attention to atmosphere as much as to fixtures. Do residents look occupied and comfortable, are staff speaking with people rather than about them, and is anyone waiting a long time for help. Ask about staff turnover, how many permanent staff work on each shift, and how the home keeps families informed when something changes. A manager who answers awkward questions openly is telling you something useful.
Arranging a Place in Worthing and Meeting the Fees
Alongside visiting, the practical machinery of assessment and funding needs to be set in motion, and it takes longer than most families expect. Two things happen in sequence: what the person needs is established first, then what they will be asked to pay.
The Care Needs Assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to an assessment, free of charge and whatever their means. West Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying it out for people in Worthing and for arranging funded support where someone is eligible. A practitioner considers daily living, mobility, health and safety at home, and records whether needs can still be met with support at home or whether residential care is the appropriate answer. That written assessment is useful to self funding families too, because it gives a clear specification to discuss with each home.
How the Fees Are Settled
A financial assessment then looks at income, savings and, in most cases where a permanent move is planned, the value of a property. Where capital sits above the national threshold, the placement is normally funded privately, and where it falls below, the council contributes on the basis of that assessment. Weekly fees differ between homes and according to the level of care needed, so ask for a written schedule showing exactly what the fee covers and what is billed separately, along with the notice period and how and when fees are reviewed.
