What Residential Care in Hove Involves and What to Look For
The Support a Residential Registration Covers
Every provider here is registered for residential care, which means a place to live combined with personal care: help with washing and dressing, meals, prompts and support with medication, company through the day and staff available overnight. Clinical nursing delivered on site is not part of it. Working out honestly whether the difficulties are practical or medical is the most useful thing a family can do at the start, because it decides which kind of home to look at in the first place.
Reading the Inspection Record
Judgements across these thirty five homes run from Outstanding down to Requires Improvement, with one home not yet rated, which makes the rating a reasonable first filter and a poor final one. The report underneath sets out how the home was staffed on the day inspectors visited, whether call bells were answered promptly, how medicines were stored and given, the manner in which residents were spoken to and involved in decisions, and whether concerns raised at an earlier visit had genuinely been resolved. Two homes holding the same rating can read very differently once you have both reports in front of you. Where a home has no rating yet, ask the manager about their previous record instead.
What a Visit Reveals
Arrange to see the home when it is busiest, around a meal for preference, and if a second visit can be managed, choose a quieter hour when fewer staff are on duty. Watch whether residents seem occupied rather than merely seated, whether staff greet people by name without checking a chart, and how long anyone waits after asking for help. Ask about the overnight rota, the balance of permanent staff to agency cover, and how long the manager has been in post. Weigh the practical side too, from how easily relatives can visit to whether the layout suits someone unsteady on their feet.
Getting an Assessment and Sorting Out Funding in Hove
Requesting the Assessment
A care needs assessment is open to anyone who appears to need support, and savings play no part in whether one is offered. A practitioner examines what has become difficult, what risks have emerged and what would genuinely help, then puts the conclusions in writing. That written record is what you hold each home against when its manager assures you they can meet the needs described, and it is worth keeping close by throughout the search.
Establishing Who Pays
A financial assessment follows separately, weighing income, savings and property against the national thresholds. East Sussex County Council Adult Social Care is responsible for both assessments and for arranging a funded placement where someone qualifies. If the dominant need proves to be a health one, NHS continuing healthcare may be the right route instead, assessed under its own separate criteria. Families who expect to fund privately still benefit from completing the process, because the record is far harder to assemble later.
Fees and What Sits Outside Them
Weekly charges differ between homes and between rooms within a single home, influenced by the room and the level of support agreed. Ask for a written schedule that separates the core weekly fee from anything billed on top, such as hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments or outings. Ask how frequently fees are reviewed and what notice of a rise you would be given, since affordability over several years matters more than the opening figure.
