Arranging Nursing Care in Worthing and Meeting the Fees

Funding a nursing home place runs on a timetable of its own, and it rarely moves as quickly as families need it to. There are two decisions to be worked through, and they happen in order. The first establishes whether nursing care is genuinely required, and the second establishes who pays for it and how much. Starting the first of these promptly is what keeps the second from becoming a scramble.

Getting the Care Needs Assessment Under Way

An assessment is available to anyone who appears to need care and support, free of charge and without regard to savings. West Sussex County Council is responsible for arranging it for people in Worthing and for putting funded support in place where someone is eligible. The practitioner will look at health conditions, mobility, medication, safety and the outcomes the person wants, then record whether their needs call for the continuous nursing presence a nursing home provides. Where they do, an NHS assessment may also apply towards the nursing element of the weekly fee, and it is sensible to ask about that during the same conversation.

Who Contributes to the Cost

A financial assessment then considers income, savings and, where a permanent move is planned, usually the value of a property, measured against the national capital threshold. Above that threshold a placement is normally self funded, and below it the council contributes according to what the assessment finds. Weekly fees vary between homes and with the amount of nursing a person needs, so ask each home for a written breakdown of what the fee covers, what is charged on top and how often fees are reviewed. Ask as well what would happen if a self funded placement later ran down to the threshold.

Comparing the Nursing Homes in Worthing

With twenty three homes to weigh, there is room to be genuinely selective without the list becoming unwieldy. Seventeen are rated Good, one is rated Outstanding, four have been told they Require Improvement and one has not yet been rated. Those ratings are a sound way to order a first look, but they summarise particular days and particular findings, and the report underneath is where the useful detail sits.

Reading Behind the Rating

A rating covers several separate questions, so a home marked Requires Improvement may have been criticised over governance or record keeping while inspectors found the nursing care itself sound. The opposite can also be true, and only the report distinguishes them. Check how recently the inspection took place, because a home can change substantially with a new manager, a new owner or a shift in the nursing team. Where a report is not recent, ask the home what has changed since and what it did in response to any concerns raised.

What to Look for on a Visit

Visit when the home is busy rather than at a quiet hour, and if you can, look in more than once at different times of day. Ask how many registered nurses are on duty on each shift, including overnight, and how the home covers sickness without leaning on agency staff who do not know the residents. Ask how a deterioration in someone's health is handled, how decisions about hospital admission are made and how quickly families are told. Notice whether residents seem comfortable and occupied and whether staff speak with them rather than around them, since that impression is often the most honest evidence available to you.
