    • Care Home

127 Longdon Road is a small residential care home in Solihull supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. Being small is the point: the household can be shaped around the people who live in it rather than around a routine that suits an organisation. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it covers the things that make a week worth having: seeing people, going out, keeping up an interest, being useful, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and a routine that can be relied upon matters greatly to most of the people we support. We give people the time to do things themselves even when stepping in would be quicker, and where somebody wants more independence support is planned to withdraw gradually as they grow into it. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody get used to the house before anything permanent is discussed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household works in practice.

    • Care Home

Homestead is a residential care home in Walsall, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything written here, so please visit and ask us the questions that matter to you.

    • Care Home

School House is a care home in Walsall. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing a mental health condition, most of them younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. People have their own rooms and their own things, they help decide what is bought and cooked, and they choose how much of the day to spend with other people. Where somebody wants more independence, our job is to help them get there, not to keep them comfortable and static. Communication is where most of our effort goes. Not everybody here uses speech, and among those who do, not everybody finds it easy to explain when something is wrong. We learn each person's way of telling us, we pay attention to what behaviour is saying, and we check our assumptions rather than acting on them. Predictability helps enormously. Routines stay steady, changes are explained well in advance, and we watch the things that can quietly make a day unbearable, such as noise, crowding or an unexpected visitor. Respite gives families a proper break and gives the person a short stay with people who already know them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. If you are looking at support for a relative in Walsall, please come and see us and ask whatever you want.

A settled routine matters greatly to many of those we support, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. Victoria Lodge Care Home is a residential home in Birmingham. We are a permanent home to older people, many of whom are living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays for people who need care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. We help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, taking medication at the right time, eating and drinking well, and having somebody nearby through the night. Where dementia is part of the picture, it shapes the whole house rather than a single corner of it. We keep the day recognisable, we keep familiar staff around, we let people keep their own belongings and their own habits, and we sit with someone who is upset instead of trying to talk them out of it. Food is cooked here and we cater for the tastes and the dietary and religious requirements of the people who live with us, which in a city like Birmingham means asking rather than assuming. Families visit whenever they can and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We would still rather you came and saw the place for yourself, talked to residents and staff, and made up your own mind.

Millwater is a care home in Birmingham. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out at the start than let a family find it later. The inspection identified things that were not good enough for the people living here, and we have accepted that. Anyone considering us should ask precisely what was found and precisely what has changed since, and should not settle for a general answer. What we are working towards is a home built around individuals. The people here have very different needs, and support has to be planned person by person rather than by group. That means learning how somebody communicates, what their week should actually contain, what unsettles them and what helps when things go wrong. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Please visit before deciding anything. Meet the people living here, read the inspection report in full and judge us on what you find rather than on what we write.

We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. What a younger autistic adult wants from a week bears almost no relation to what an older person living with dementia needs from it. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Communication takes the most effort and gets it. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things, and we treat behaviour as information rather than as a difficulty to be managed. Routines stay steady and changes are explained well in advance. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit, meet the people living here and ask whatever matters to them.

Meadowyrthe is a residential care home in Tamworth providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing, and people living with mental health conditions. The place runs at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone. For those living with dementia and for people managing mental health conditions, patience and familiarity achieve more than any amount of procedure. For people with loss of sight or hearing we adapt how we communicate, how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves, because those small changes decide whether somebody is included. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than late. Respite stays are available. We are 202 Weston Road, a care home in Stoke on Trent, and we support adults of all ages who need a hand with everyday living. The residential care we provide is arranged around the people who live here rather than around a timetable. Some of those people are older, some are younger adults, and a number live with a learning disability or are autistic. We take the time to learn what matters to each person, how they like their day to run, what they want to keep doing for themselves and where they would rather have support. What we learn goes into the care plan and is revisited as things change, because what suits someone in their first month may not suit them a year later. We also offer respite care. That can give a family carer a proper break, or give someone the chance to get to know us before deciding about a longer stay. Anyone here for a short while joins in with the same routines and the same company as everyone else. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as a sound footing rather than a finishing line, and we keep asking residents, relatives and our own staff what could be done better. If you are weighing up care in the area, you are welcome to come and look round, meet the team and get a feel for the place before you decide anything.

We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. We help with personal care, meals, medication and appointments, and we support people to keep up the interests, work, study and friendships that make a week feel like their own. Where someone manages something for themselves, we protect that and stay nearby rather than taking over for the sake of speed. Mental health support asks for patience and for noticing things early. We take time to learn how each person tells us they are struggling, what helps them settle when a day goes badly and which parts of the week need to stay predictable. We work alongside colleagues in local health teams where that is useful, and we would far rather act on a small change than wait for a crisis. Families are welcome whenever they wish to visit and we would far rather hear about a worry while it is still small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we keep it by getting ordinary things right.

Dove House Care Home is a residential care home in Ashbourne. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. We ask when someone likes to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the afternoon. Help with personal care, meals and medication is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage for themselves is protected. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure rather than argue when someone is unsettled. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms are arranged, and for residents with physical disabilities we pay attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are regulated by them and are building the care planning, records and oversight that a good inspection outcome requires. Anyone considering Dove House is welcome to visit and see the home on an ordinary day.

For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with washing and dressing, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, help to manage money and appointments, and support to get out to a job, a course or a club. Each plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. We pay close attention to how each person communicates. Some people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or a device, and others tell us a great deal through their behaviour, so we take the time to learn it and write down what we learn. Respite matters here too. A planned short stay gives a family carer a genuine break and lets the person get to know us gradually. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit.

Heath Lodge is a residential care home in Rowley Regis, Sandwell, supporting adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period. The people who live here call it home, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose within it, with as much independence as they want and as much support as they need. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with cooking, laundry and shopping, with medication and appointments, and with managing money and correspondence. We also support people to get out locally, to keep up the activities they enjoy and to stay close to family and friends. Communication and routine sit at the centre of the work here. Learning how a person asks for help, how they show that they are unhappy and what settles them when a day goes badly matters more than any written policy, so we take time over it and write plans in a form the person can actually use. For residents with physical disabilities we pay close attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are regulated by them and are building the planning, training and oversight that a good rating properly requires.

Mulberry House provides residential care in Walsall for adults, including younger adults, adults with learning disabilities and autism, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. The particulars are where the work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves, and how they want to be helped with a physical disability are all things we learn from the person. Where somebody has sight or hearing loss, we take care over how we approach and speak with them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Far Fillimore Rest Home provides residential care in Burton on Trent for older people, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. Most of what makes a care home work is undramatic and daily. Getting up when you want to, food you actually want to eat, a familiar face on shift, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is where we concentrate our effort. For residents living with dementia, familiarity and a calm unhurried approach prevent far more distress than they ever cost, so we keep the day recognisable and let people do things at the pace they can manage. We would rather be plain about our inspection position than leave families to discover it elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to argue with the findings. They described genuine shortfalls, and our manager and staff team have been working through them, with tighter medicines practice, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that problems surface quickly rather than quietly. There is more to do and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are thinking about Far Fillimore for somebody you love, please come and see us, ask what has actually changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here.

We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. A number are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day familiar, keep the same staff around and work at their pace rather than ours. We support people living with mental ill health, working alongside community mental health colleagues, people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much somebody can do for themselves, and people living with sight or hearing loss. We want to be honest with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. • Care Home

Evergreen is a residential care home in Birmingham. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, residents with mental health needs and residents with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. Help with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage themselves is protected rather than taken over. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure rather than argue when someone is unsettled. Mental health needs ask for the same patience and for noticing a change early rather than waiting for it to become a crisis, and we work alongside colleagues in local health teams where that helps. For residents with physical disabilities we pay attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come and we would far rather hear a concern while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Farmhouse Residential Rest Home is a care home in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. We provide a permanent home for adults with a range of needs, and we aim for a household where people are known properly rather than managed efficiently. Most of the people living here receive residential care. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. We support residents living with dementia, where familiar staff and a routine that does not shift about are the things that genuinely help. We also support adults with a learning disability or autism, adults living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, which means adapting how we communicate and how we assist person by person rather than running one approach for everybody. We support younger adults as well, and we do not assume their interests or routines match those of our older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and allowing somebody to try the home before making a permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit on an ordinary day, speak to the people who live here and form your own impression of the place.

    • Care Home

Hill House is a care home in Birmingham. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing a mental health condition, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Stability is the main thing we try to offer. Many of the people who come here have moved between placements more often than anyone should, and each move undoes work that took months to build. So we plan on the basis that people are staying, we do not treat a difficult week as grounds for reconsidering, and we are careful not to promise what we cannot sustain. Living here is meant to be ordinary. People have their own rooms and routines, come and go, use the city and make their own decisions, including some we might not have chosen for them. Where somebody is working towards independent living, we put real effort behind it rather than recording it as an aim and moving on. Communication takes the most work. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things, and we treat behaviour as information rather than as a difficulty to be managed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a placement here, please visit and ask us the questions that matter to you.

Coleshill Road is a residential care home in Solihull, Birmingham, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism alongside older people who need residential care. It is a home rather than a placement, and the household is arranged around the people living in it. Support is planned individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it also takes in the parts of life that are too easily treated as extras: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having something to look forward to in the week. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in because it would be quicker. Where somebody wants greater independence, we plan support that withdraws as their confidence grows. We support younger adults as well as older residents, and we do not assume that people want the same things simply because they share a roof. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The work of the house continues properly meanwhile. This is the home of the people who live in it. We support residents living with dementia, and the things we rely on are unglamorous and effective: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays the same, food people recognise and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We keep an eye on the quiet signals, whether somebody is eating and sleeping properly or seems more withdrawn than usual. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We try to run this as a house where people live rather than a place where care is administered. Residents tell us when they prefer to get up, what they like to eat, how much help they want with washing and dressing and how they want to spend the day, and the day is built from those answers rather than from a rota that suits us. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy, and whatever someone can still do for themselves is protected. Dementia care runs through a great deal of what we do. We take time to learn a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that help them feel settled, because that knowledge is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious rather than correct them. We keep the day predictable and explain changes in advance where we can. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. 20 Talbot Street is a small residential care home in Rugeley, Staffordshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of the people living here are younger adults. Being small is the point. It means the people living here know one another properly and it means we know them properly too, which is what allows support to be genuinely individual rather than individual on paper. People decorate their own rooms, help decide what is cooked and when, and come and go to work, college, clubs and family as they choose. Support is worked out with each person and reviewed with them. Communication gets particular attention, and we use whatever suits the individual, whether that is speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply knowing somebody well enough to understand what they are telling you. Iverley View is a residential care home in Stourbridge providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We run the home at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley comes round, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, support with mobility, and somebody always around when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and to move about in. We take the view that behaviour is nearly always communication, and the useful question is what somebody is trying to tell us rather than how to stop it. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than late. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round.

    • Care Home

Ashley Lodge is a residential care home in Birmingham providing care for older people, along with shorter respite stays. We are a straightforward sort of place. There is no elaborate philosophy behind what we do beyond looking after people properly and letting them get on with their lives. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about if a person needs them. People choose how much they want to join in. Some are in the lounge from breakfast onwards and some prefer their own room with the door propped open, and neither choice earns any remark from us. The point of a home is that you can live in it the way you want to. Birmingham is home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors and a good deal of flexibility about when family can come. They can come whenever they like. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

Safeharbour at 254 Hagley Road is a residential care home in Stourbridge, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. It is a house in a residential street, and that is deliberate. The people who live here are part of the local community rather than set apart from it. Our support is built around each person's own life. We help with the practical business of running a home, with cooking, laundry, shopping and appointments, and with personal care where it is needed. Just as importantly, we support people to do the things they actually want to do, whether that is work, college, a regular club, a favourite place to visit or time with family and friends. We pay close attention to communication and to routine. Knowing how a person tells us they are unhappy, what helps when they are anxious and which parts of the day need to stay predictable is the difference between support that works and support that frustrates everyone. We write plans with the person, in language they can use, and we review them properly. We also offer respite stays, which can give families a break and let someone try the house before any longer commitment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are glad of it, and we keep asking the people who live here whether their home feels like theirs.

James Court Residential Care Home is a care home in Burton On Trent supporting adults with learning disabilities. We treat the house as belonging to the people who live in it, and we try to behave like people who are there to help rather than people who are in charge. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to see family, because a home is somewhere you go out from and come back to. Support is individual and agreed with the person. Some here need a great deal of help and others very little, and both are entirely normal. We put real weight on communication, using speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply the understanding that grows from living alongside somebody. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody try the house first. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Eros Crescent is a residential care home in Stoke on Trent supporting adults who need help with daily living. We work with people who have a learning disability, autistic people, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults, and we also provide respite stays for shorter periods. Our approach starts with the individual rather than the group. People living here have different routines, different interests and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time. We help with personal care, meals, medication, appointments and the practical running of a home, and we support people to keep up activities, work, education and relationships that matter to them. For many of the people we support, predictability and clear communication make the greatest difference. We learn how each person prefers to receive information, how they let us know when something is wrong, and which parts of the day should stay the same. Where someone wants to take on more for themselves, we support that step by step rather than deciding on their behalf. Families and other professionals are welcome to be involved as much as the person wishes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be judged, though, on whether the people who live at Eros Crescent feel at home here and have a real say in how their support is given.

We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period. The people who live here call it home, and our job is to help each of them live the life they choose within it. Support is planned one person at a time. We help with personal care where it is wanted, with meals, medication and appointments, and with the practical business of running a home. Just as importantly, we support people to get out into Shrewsbury, to keep up interests and friendships and to stay in close contact with family. Communication and routine are at the centre of good support here. We take time to learn how each person prefers information to be given, how they tell us that something is wrong and which parts of the day need to stay the same. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms are arranged. Where someone wants more independence, we work towards it at their pace rather than ours. Drake Court Residential Home is in Walsall. We are a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. Many are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We want to be honest with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you come across it elsewhere. We understand what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any part of it with families, professionals and the people who live here. • Care Home

Field House is a residential care home in Church Stretton, supporting older people from the town and the surrounding part of Shropshire. We are a residential home and not a clinical setting, which we say plainly because people are entitled to know what they are choosing. What we offer is a household where the practical difficulties of later life have been taken off somebody's shoulders. Help with washing and dressing, given without fuss and in private. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and served at a table. Somebody awake through the night. Company when it is wanted and peace when it is not. Most people move in after a hard stretch, so the first weeks are taken slowly. We learn how a person likes their day arranged before we start arranging anything, and we expect that somebody may be grieving for their own home while settling into a room here. Routines matter. If a person has had a bath at night for fifty years, we are not going to move them to a morning shower because it suits a rota. Being in a small town has advantages we try not to waste. People who move here have often lived locally for years, and keeping those threads intact matters: the same church, the same newspaper, visitors who can walk round. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and have a cup of tea and ask the residents what they think.

1 and 2 Markyes Close is a small residential home near Ross On Wye in Herefordshire, run by Aspire Living. It is home to adults with learning disabilities and to autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays, planned well in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. We run this as the residents' house. People choose how their bedrooms look, they have a genuine say in the shopping and the meals, and they get involved in cooking, gardening and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers getting out to whatever somebody is interested in, whether that is work, a course, a club, a place of worship or a regular visit to family. Where we put most of our effort is understanding each person properly. Some people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or a device, and some tell us what they need through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write it down so it survives a change of shift, and we take advice from families and from health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. • Care Home

Bradbury Lodge is a residential care home in Whitchurch, Shropshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Where somebody has sensory loss alongside a learning disability, the ordinary assumptions of care stop holding. You cannot announce yourself from a doorway and expect to be heard, and a great deal of what might look like reluctance or withdrawal is really a failure on our part to make contact in a way that reaches the person. So communication is the central task here rather than a preliminary to it, and we use signing, touch, objects of reference, symbols, routine and consistency, whatever suits the individual. Beyond that this is a home like any other. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and are supported to get out to clubs, appointments and family. 201 Drayton Avenue is a small residential home near Stratford Upon Avon, run by Heart of England Mencap. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults and older residents, and we also offer respite stays. We are a house on an ordinary street and we run it as the residents' home. People choose how their bedrooms look, have a real say in the meals and the shopping, and get involved in cooking, laundry and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and managing money, and it covers helping people get out to whatever matters to them, whether that is a job, a course, a club, a place of worship or a regular visit to family. Communication is where we put most of our effort. Some people here use speech, others use signs, symbols or a device, and others tell us a great deal through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write down what we learn so it survives a change of staff, and we listen to families and to health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit.

Arranging and funding a care home place in the West Midlands

West Midlands has a large and varied residential care sector, with 1,199 care homes currently listed across the region. That breadth means families have real choice, but it also makes narrowing down the options harder. A residential care home provides a permanent or long-stay home for older people and adults who need help with day to day tasks such as washing, dressing, meals, medication prompts, and moving safely around the building. Staff are on hand around the clock, though the emphasis is on personal and social support rather than clinical nursing.

Reading CQC ratings across the region

Every home listed has been inspected by the Care Quality Commission, and the West Midlands sample reflects the full range of outcomes. You will find homes rated Outstanding, such as The Gardens, Whitegates, Davlyn House, Burcot Grange, The Cottage and R M P Care at 20 Oulton Road. The majority sit at Good, including well established homes like Trinity Lodge, Sedgley Court, Metchley Manor, Eastcote Park Care Home and Bowbrook House. Some homes carry a Requires Improvement rating, for example The Elms, Belvidere Residential Care Home and Nelson House, and Inglewood Residential Home is currently rated Inadequate. A small number, including Joseph House and Ladybird House, are not yet rated because they are newer registrations or awaiting reinspection.

Practical things to weigh up

Location within the West Midlands matters more than families sometimes expect. Being close enough for regular visits from relatives makes a real difference to wellbeing, so consider transport links and parking as well as the home itself. Beyond ratings, look at how the home feels on the day you visit: the atmosphere in the lounges, whether staff speak to residents by name, the quality and choice of meals, and whether activities suit the person you are arranging care for. Ask about staff turnover, how the home handles changing needs, and how families are kept informed.

Choosing between care homes in the West Midlands

Before choosing a home, most families begin with a care needs assessment. This is a free assessment carried out by the local authority Adult Social Care team, and it looks at what daily support the person needs and whether residential care is the right setting. If eligible needs are identified, a financial assessment follows to work out how much the person contributes and how much, if anything, the local authority pays.

How funding usually works

Funding depends on savings, property and income. In England, people with capital above the upper threshold generally pay the full weekly fee themselves, while those below it may receive help from the local authority. If nursing input is needed, NHS-funded Nursing Care or, in some cases, NHS Continuing Healthcare can cover parts of the cost. Weekly fees in the West Midlands vary considerably depending on the home, room type and level of support, so it is worth asking each home for a full written breakdown before signing a contract.

Timing and next steps

It helps to begin conversations early, ideally before a crisis such as a hospital admission forces a quick decision. Shortlist three or four homes from the 1,181 available, visit each one, and ask for their latest CQC report. Homes such as Fountain Court, Chepstow House, Shenstone Hall and Welbeck House give a sense of the range across the region, from smaller family-run settings to larger purpose-built homes. Taking time now to compare properly usually leads to a more settled placement later.

Which providers in the West Midlands offer residential care?

You can filter the directory by CQC rating and location to narrow the list down to homes near you. Each provider profile shows the current inspection rating and the type of care offered.

What should I ask when visiting a residential care home in the West Midlands?

Ask how staffing levels are set day and night, and how long key staff have worked at the home. Enquire about the daily routine, the choice of meals, and what activities take place during a typical week. It is sensible to ask what happens if the resident's needs change, whether the home can support additional needs later on, and how families are kept informed. Also request a copy of the contract and a written breakdown of fees before making any commitment.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides personal support with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, with staff on site around the clock. A nursing home does all of that but also has qualified nurses on duty at all times to manage clinical needs such as complex wound care, tube feeding or unstable long term conditions. The homes listed for the West Midlands here are residential rather than nursing. If nursing input becomes necessary, the care needs assessment will identify this and a different type of setting may be recommended.

Can the local authority fund a residential care home placement in the West Midlands?

The local authority can contribute to residential care fees where the person has eligible care needs and their finances fall within the means test thresholds. A financial assessment looks at savings, income and, where relevant, property to work out the contribution. People with capital above the upper threshold usually pay the full fee themselves, at least initially. Where nursing needs exist, NHS-funded Nursing Care or NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover part or all of the cost.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the West Midlands?

Contact the local authority adult social care team and request a care needs assessment for the person concerned. The assessment is free, and it can be arranged whether the person is at home, in hospital or already receiving some support. A social worker or assessor will look at daily living tasks, mobility, health, and social wellbeing to decide what level of support is appropriate. If residential care is recommended, a separate financial assessment will follow to work out funding.

How far in advance should I start looking for a care home in the West Midlands?

Ideally, start looking as soon as it becomes clear that residential care may be needed, even if the move is not imminent. Popular homes in the West Midlands, particularly those rated Outstanding or Good, can have waiting lists for certain room types. Beginning early gives time to visit several homes, read inspection reports, and speak with families of current residents. If a hospital discharge is driving the timeline, the ward's discharge team can help fast track an assessment and shortlist suitable homes.
