What residential care in Solihull involves and what to look for
Moving into a care home means handing over meals, laundry, medication and personal care to someone else, while trying to keep as much of a person's own routine as the home allows. How much of that routine survives has far more to do with the individual home than with the category it belongs to, which is why forty two listings need narrowing before they can be compared usefully.
Making sense of the ratings
The Care Quality Commission judges each home against five questions, asking whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and the overall rating is a summary of those five. Thirty eight homes in Solihull are rated Good and four sit at Requires Improvement. Where a home carries the lower rating, look at what the inspectors were actually concerned about, because a shortcoming in record keeping reads very differently from one affecting the safety of care, and check whether the home has been reinspected since. For the homes rated Good, the individual judgements behind that word are where the useful detail lies.
Questions that separate one home from another
Ask how many staff are on duty overnight as well as during the day, and how regularly agency workers cover shifts. Ask how long the registered manager has held the post, since settled leadership usually shows up in everything else. Establish whether the home could keep caring for someone as dementia advances or mobility declines, or whether that would mean another move later on. Visiting twice, with one visit around a mealtime, reveals more about daily life than any arranged tour.
Getting an assessment and sorting out the funding
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask for an assessment, whatever their income or savings, and it is worth requesting even where a family expects to fund the placement themselves. The assessment covers daily tasks, mobility, medication, health conditions, risk at home and the support a relative already provides, and it produces a written record of what is needed. Requests go to Birmingham City Council, which is responsible for adult social care assessments and for arranging funded support. Anyone caring unpaid for a relative can request a carer's assessment of their own needs alongside it.
Means testing, fees and the contract
A financial assessment follows the needs assessment, considering income, savings and, for a permanent placement, the value of a property in most circumstances. Above the capital threshold the resident meets the fees; below it the council contributes according to the assessment. Homes set their own charges rather than working from a common rate, so fees vary across Solihull with the room, the level of support and whether nursing care is involved. Ask for a written breakdown showing what the weekly fee covers and what sits outside it, including hairdressing, chiropody and outings, and ask how much notice is given before an increase. Where someone has substantial health needs, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare has been considered, since that is assessed separately and can change who pays.
