    • Care Home

We are Hillsborough House, a residential care home in Bath and North East Somerset. We support older people, including adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people managing a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. A home with that mix of people in it cannot run on one routine, and we do not try to make it. What works instead is knowing each person well enough that their day makes sense to them. The skill is holding all of it together without anybody's needs being quietly traded away for somebody else's. Communication is where we start with every new resident. How does this person make themselves understood, and how do we make ourselves understood to them. We settle that early, use it consistently, and check that it is working rather than assuming. Predictability does much of the rest, together with familiar staff and routines we protect rather than ask people to be flexible about. Choice runs through the day as far as it can, with help offered rather than imposed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

We at The Dene Lodge in Minehead are proud to offer a warm, welcoming residential care home nestled in the heart of this beautiful coastal town in Somerset. Our home provides specialised older person care, dementia support, and respite stays for families across the South West seeking peace of mind and genuine compassion. Set within the charming surroundings of Minehead, our home benefits from the calming influence of a town known for its sea air, gentle pace, and friendly community spirit. The location offers residents a sense of place that feels both familiar and comforting, whilst providing families with easy access when visiting loved ones. Our setting has been thoughtfully arranged to feel like a true home rather than an institution, with comfortable communal areas where residents can socialise, relax, and enjoy the rhythms of daily life at their own pace. Our approach to residential care is built around the individual. We understand that moving into a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we work closely with each resident and their loved ones to ensure the transition feels supported at every step. For older residents, this means personalised care plans that respect long established routines, preferences, and personalities. Everyone who joins us is welcomed as a unique person with their own story, and our team takes the time to learn what matters most to each individual. Dementia care is a particular area of focus for us. We recognise that living with dementia presents unique challenges, not only for the person themselves but for the whole family. Our team is trained to provide sensitive, patient, and dignified support, creating a calm environment where residents feel safe and understood. We believe in celebrating what people can still do rather than focusing on what has changed, and we encourage meaningful engagement through familiar activities, gentle companionship, and reassuring daily routines. Families often tell us how much it means to see their loved one settled, comfortable, and treated with unfailing kindness. For those needing respite care, we offer a warm and flexible welcome. Whether you are a family carer in need of a well earned break, or someone recovering from illness or a hospital stay who needs additional support before returning home, our respite provision is designed to feel restorative. Residents staying with us on a short term basis receive the same attentive care as our permanent residents, and many families find that respite becomes a valued source of regular support throughout the year. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our Care Quality Commission rating of Good across every domain assessed. The CQC found us to be Good in the areas of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led, which reflects the consistent standards we work hard to maintain across every aspect of daily life at the home. For families, this independent assurance offers real comfort. It confirms that the care being delivered meets recognised professional benchmarks and that the leadership, safety culture, and compassion within our home have been externally verified. Whilst ratings tell part of the story, we believe the true measure of a good care home is felt in the small moments, a shared cup of tea, a hand held during a difficult day, a favourite meal remembered and prepared with care. Choosing a care home is deeply personal, and we know that no website can fully capture what it feels like to walk through the door of a place that might become someone's new home. That is why we warmly invite families to get in touch, ask questions, and arrange to visit us in person. Whether you are planning ahead, exploring options for a loved one living with dementia, or urgently seeking respite support, our team is here to listen without pressure and to help you find the right way forward. At The Dene Lodge in Minehead, every resident is treated as family, and every family is treated as our own.

No 68 Specialist Care is a residential care home in Salisbury in Wiltshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period. Being a small setting is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and we can genuinely arrange things around the people living here rather than around a rota. Visitors come at the times that suit them, and staff sit down and talk properly rather than passing through on the way to the next task. People here decide when they get up, what they wear, what they eat and whether they want company or their own space with the door shut. We spend the first weeks learning about a person rather than fitting them into our routine: what they did for a living, what they will not be persuaded to eat, what time breakfast has always been. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than trying to smooth it over. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

    • Care Home

Blackberry Hill is a residential care home in Castle Cary, Somerset, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, most of them younger adults. We try to run this as a house rather than a service. People choose how they spend their days, help with cooking, shopping and looking after the place if they want to, and arrange their own rooms. Support is agreed with each person and written in words they can check, and we review it with them rather than about them. Doing this well is mostly attention to detail. We learn how somebody communicates, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and what helps when a day goes wrong. For autistic residents we take particular care over predictability, quiet space and clear information about what is coming next. People here keep their outside lives going, whether that is family, friends, college, work or interests they have always had. Respite stays are also available so that families can take a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around it. We know which areas were identified, we have a plan for putting them right and we are working through it. Please ask us about it directly. If you would like to visit, get in touch and come and see what the house is actually like.

Tanglewood is a residential care home in St Austell, Cornwall. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carer needs one. This is a home rather than an institution, and the people who live here run their own lives in it. Everyone has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find hard and what they want to be doing with their time. Being in a Cornish town of manageable size helps. People are known locally, keep up the clubs and activities they like, get to the coast, see their families and go out without it being an expedition. We support all of that rather than reducing it to whatever suits the rota. Communication is where we concentrate. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do tell us things and make sure every member of the team understands. When someone becomes distressed we treat it as communication and look for the cause, and anything that restricts a person's freedom is agreed properly, recorded and reviewed with the aim of reducing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit and see the house at work.

    • Care Home

Southbourne Beach Care Home is a residential care home in Bournemouth. We care for older adults, including many people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We aim for a home that is easy to live in. Calm surroundings, a day with a dependable shape, and staff who are not in a rush. For people living with dementia those three things do more good than almost anything we could add, and they take steady attention to maintain rather than a one off effort. People here keep their own furniture and photographs, decide when to get up and when to turn in, and have a say in the food and in how sociable an afternoon is going to be. Support with washing, dressing, medication and appointments is given quietly and only as far as it is needed. Visitors are welcome at the times that suit them. We ask families for a great deal of detail early on. Where somebody grew up, the work they did, the names that matter, the music they liked. It is what allows staff to make sense of a person on a difficult day, and it is the difference between caring for somebody and caring for their diagnosis. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange a visit and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Ciderstone House is a residential care home in Swindon supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults moving into their first home away from family. We are a small setting rather than a large institution, and that shapes everything about how we work. People here have their own space, their own routines and a real say in how the house is run, from what goes on the shopping list to how the living room is arranged. Our starting point is always the individual. Some of the people we support want to be out most days, at college, at work or seeing friends, and need us to make that practical. Others prefer a quieter pace and a predictable week, and need staff who understand what helps them regulate and what makes a day harder. We take the time to learn those patterns properly, including how someone communicates when they are anxious, and we write our support plans with the person rather than about them. We also offer respite stays, which can give families a planned break and give the person a chance to try being away from home in a place they already know. Wherever we can, we arrange visits first so nothing about the stay comes as a surprise. Families and social workers are part of the conversation throughout, and we would rather raise something early than wait for a review. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We are Mapleton, a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Because we support people with quite different needs, we plan around individuals rather than running one routine. For residents living with dementia that usually means finding out who somebody has been and building the day around it, because knowing a person's history tells us more than any list of symptoms does. For autistic residents it means predictability, a sensory environment that works, and being told what will happen and finding that it turns out to be true. Communication is where we start with anyone new. How does this person make themselves understood, and how do we make ourselves understood to them. We settle that early and we check it is working rather than assuming. Choice runs through the day as far as it can. People decide how they spend their time, and where a decision needs support we support it rather than taking it over. For health needs beyond our registration we work alongside district nurses and GPs, and respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

The Laurels is a residential care home in Christchurch, providing a settled home and short stays for older people who need support with everyday living. Residents come to us for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes managing a house had become too much. Sometimes an illness or a fall changed what was realistic. Whatever the route here, our aim is that people come to think of this as home. They bring their own things, keep their own routines and decide how their days are spent, while staff look after what has become difficult, from personal care and medication to meals and laundry. A number of the people living with us have dementia. What helps there is consistency, unhurried time and knowing enough about somebody's life to be real company rather than simply helpful. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or someone needs support for a few weeks after being unwell. We would rather be open about our regulator. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not content with that. We have taken it seriously, there is work under way to put things right, and we are willing to talk it through properly with anyone considering the home. Please come and see The Laurels for yourself. Walk round without being hurried, talk to the staff and to the people living here, and ask us the questions you actually want answered.

We are Lowenac in Camborne, Cornwall, a residential home supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays for people who want a short break or whose families need one. We run this as a household rather than a service. Everybody has their own room, arranged as they want it, and a real say in how things work day to day, from what goes on the shopping list to what happens at the weekend. We support people to keep up with family and friends, to get out into Camborne and further afield, to keep up with work, college or volunteering, and to take on more of their own routine at their own pace. Support here depends entirely on knowing people well. We take time to learn how each person communicates, what tends to unsettle them and what helps them settle again, and we make sure anyone new understands all of it before supporting somebody alone. Keeping our staff team consistent is one of the most valuable things we can do, particularly for people who find change difficult. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep questioning our own practice regardless of it. Cross Park House is a care home in Brixham, and we support older people from across Torbay and the surrounding bay towns. Much of what we do is unremarkable on paper and matters enormously in practice: a familiar face at breakfast, help getting dressed without fuss, and someone who notices when a resident is not quite right. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and those with physical disabilities that make life at home difficult. Mobility support is a real strength of ours. We plan carefully so that reduced movement never becomes a reason to stay in one room, and we keep people involved in the parts of the day they enjoy. Dementia care here begins with life history. Knowing that someone worked at sea, raised a large family or always took tea at a certain hour tells us far more about how to settle them than any general guidance could. We also offer respite stays for families who need a break or who are managing a period of recovery. Short stay guests are welcomed into the routine rather than kept at the edge of it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. We are glad of it and we still ask residents and relatives regularly what is working and what is not. Visitors are welcome. Come and see the place on an ordinary day, which tells you more than any brochure.

Avondene Care Home is a residential care home in Christchurch, caring for older people from across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. We offer permanent residential places and planned respite stays. We are not a large or grand place and we would not want to be. What we aim for is a household where people know each other, where staff have time to sit and talk, and where the day is shaped by the people living in it rather than by a timetable on a wall. Our support covers personal care, medication, meals, mobility and the steady companionship that matters most to people who have found living alone lonely or worrying. Residents decide how much company they want. Some are in the lounge from breakfast to bedtime, others prefer their own room with visitors and a quiet word now and then, and both are entirely fine. Christchurch matters to our residents, many of whom have lived locally for decades. We keep people connected to the town, to their families and to the routines they have always had wherever we possibly can. Respite stays give family carers a real rest and give guests a proper stay rather than a spare bed. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements. Whatever brings someone to our door, we take the time to understand who they are and what matters to them. Seaton is a lovely part of the world, and we make the most of our location. • Care Home

Castle Road is a residential care home in Torquay supporting adults living with mental ill health. We offer permanent places and planned respite stays. We are not a clinical setting and we do not try to feel like one. We are a house in a residential street where people live, with support available whenever it is needed. For many of the people we support, that ordinariness is the point. After periods in hospital or in unstable housing, a settled home with a reliable routine does a great deal of the work. Our support covers meals, medication, help keeping appointments, managing a household and rebuilding confidence in everyday situations. Just as importantly, it covers staff who know a person well enough to tell the difference between a bad day and a genuine deterioration, and who respond proportionately to each. Recovery here is practical rather than abstract. Cooking, budgeting, getting out into Torquay, keeping in touch with family and holding on to the things that are going well. Progress is rarely a straight line and a setback is not treated as a failure. Respite stays can give someone breathing space during a difficult stretch, or give a family carer a planned rest. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Residents, families and referrers are welcome to visit and ask us directly how we work and what we could realistically support.

Ardent Residential Care Home is in Plymouth. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. We would rather be straight with you from the start. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us as requires improvement. We are not going to write around that. The findings were taken seriously, there is an improvement plan we are working through, and if you come and see us you should ask directly what has changed and what is still outstanding. You will get a plain answer. What has not changed is how we believe people should be treated. This is their home. Residents choose how their rooms look, when they get up, what they do with the day and who comes to see them. Because the people living here have genuinely different needs, we plan care one person at a time rather than running one routine and hoping it stretches. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, habits matter more than equipment: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture where it belongs, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. Genuine improvement comes from listening to residents and relatives and then acting rather than recording.

    • Care Home

Ashfield is a residential care home in Exmouth, caring for older people from across east Devon. We provide permanent residential places and planned respite stays, and we support residents living with dementia. We are not a large place and we would not want to be. What we aim for is a home where people know one another, where staff have time to sit and talk and where the shape of the day comes from the people living in it rather than from a timetable on a wall. Our support covers personal care, medication, meals, mobility and the steady companionship that often matters most to people who have found living alone lonely or worrying. Residents decide how much company they want, and preferences about food, bedtimes and privacy are treated as decisions rather than requests. For residents living with dementia, we work from life history. Knowing someone's trade, their family and what has always settled them tells us more about supporting them than any general guidance, and when someone is unsettled we look for the specific cause. Exmouth matters to many of our residents, who have lived locally for decades, and we keep people connected to the town and to their families wherever we can. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. You are welcome to visit, stay for a cup of tea and see us on an ordinary day.

Dunraven House and Lodge is a residential care home in Salisbury, Wiltshire. We support a wide range of adults, which is worth stating plainly because it means the people living here are not all at the same point in life. We care for older people, including many living with dementia, and for younger adults, people with a physical disability, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with a visual or hearing impairment, and people recovering from difficulties with alcohol or drugs. What holds that together is a way of working rather than a single specialism. We learn how each person wants their day to run, what they can still do themselves, where they genuinely want help and how they tell us when something is wrong. Respite stays are part of what we offer and we plan them with the same care as a permanent move. There is an agreed plan for the areas that were identified and we are working through it. Anyone considering us should ask us directly what has changed, what has not, and how we are being held to it.

Croft House is a residential care home in Williton, offering support to older people, to younger adults, and to those living with dementia. We are in a quiet part of Somerset and the pace of the house reflects that. There is time here, and time turns out to be the thing that most affects whether care feels good or not. Dementia support is a large part of what we do, and we approach it by working with the person rather than correcting them. If someone is living in an earlier part of their life, we meet them there. We learn the histories, the working lives, the names that matter and the songs that land, and we use them. Familiarity does more for someone's wellbeing than almost anything we could add. For our older residents more generally, the aim is a comfortable and sociable life with the right amount of practical help. People sit where they like, keep their own routines, and see visitors whenever they wish. Meals are proper meals and mealtimes are unhurried. We also take respite bookings. A planned short stay gives a family carer a genuine rest, and it gives us the chance to get to know someone properly in case a longer stay is ever needed. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us Good overall. We keep looking at where we can do better, and the people who live here and their families are the first place we ask. You are very welcome to visit and see how the house feels.

Wisma Mulia is a residential care home in Gloucester in Gloucestershire. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and we offer respite stays for people needing care for a short period or whose usual carer needs a break. Moving into a care home is a considerable step, and the early weeks count for far more than any description of the building. We use them to learn about the person rather than to fit them into our routine. What they did for a living. What they will not be talked into eating. What time breakfast has always happened. Whether they would rather have company or be left in peace with the radio. Small facts, and between them they are most of what turns a room into somewhere that feels like home. Faith, culture, language and food matter a great deal to how settled somebody feels, and where those are important to a resident we make proper room for them rather than treating them as a preference to accommodate. The rest of the day belongs to the people living it: getting up when you choose, visitors when it suits you, keeping up with family, friends and whatever you have always done. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

Yew Tree Cottage Residential Home is a care home in Chard supporting older people, including people living with dementia. We are small and rural, and the pace of the house reflects that. There is time here, and time turns out to be the thing that most affects whether care feels good or not. Nobody is hurried through a wash, moved along from a chair or rushed through a meal to suit a shift pattern. Dementia support is a large part of what we do. We learn the histories, the working lives, the names that matter and the songs that land, and we use them, because familiarity does more good than anything we could add. • Care Home

Cumberland Grange is a residential care home in Exeter. We support older people and younger adults who can no longer manage safely at home, including many who are living with dementia, and we also welcome people for respite stays when a carer needs a break or when someone needs a little time to build their confidence back up after illness. Residential care should not mean giving up the ordinary things. People here choose when to get up, where to sit, whether to join in and what to eat. We keep the day loosely shaped rather than regimented, and there is always something going on for those who want it, from baking and music to trips out into Exeter and the surrounding countryside. Dementia care asks a lot of a team, and we put effort into knowing each person's history so that we can make sense of what they are telling us even when the words are difficult. Relatives often hold the key to that, and we ask for their help. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We would far rather a family raised something small with us early than saved it up, so we make a point of being available and easy to talk to. If you are considering a move for yourself or for someone you care about, you are welcome to visit, have a look around and stay for lunch.

Quantock House is a residential care home in Weston super Mare. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability or autism, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Supporting people of different ages and with different needs under one roof only works if the plan really does belong to the individual. Before someone moves in we spend time finding out how they like to live, what they manage for themselves, what they find difficult and what they want from us. That becomes the plan and we review it when things change rather than at a set interval. People here keep their own belongings, run their own routines as far as they are able, and are supported to get out locally, to see family and friends and to carry on with whatever they enjoy. Where someone communicates differently, we learn how, and we make sure the whole staff team does the same so that support feels consistent. Sensory loss makes everything else harder, so we pay attention to hearing aids and glasses, to lighting and to giving people the time they need. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at residential care or respite in North Somerset, please contact us and arrange to come and look round.

Living together in one house works when difference is expected rather than tolerated. Our residents do not all want the same day. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others appear when they are ready. Some need a great deal of physical help, others need mainly a settled place and staff who know them. Running the house well means holding all of that at once without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. We plan support with each person and with the family or friends they want involved, and we adjust how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

Staff know everybody properly rather than by shift, which makes it much easier to notice when somebody is unwell or unsettled. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we would rather state that plainly than have anyone come across it later. We have worked through what the inspection identified, particularly how we plan, record and review care and how consistently our staff are supported to work, and we are willing to talk through the detail with anyone considering a place here. Where a person is living with a mental health condition, we watch for the early signs that things are becoming harder, we ask what has helped in the past, and we work with community teams in Somerset so that support can be increased before matters reach a crisis. Linden House is a nursing home in Wellington. We care for older people and younger adults, providing both residential and nursing care, and we also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period. Being able to offer residential and nursing care in the same house matters more than it might sound. It means that when somebody's health changes, they do not have to pack up and start again somewhere unfamiliar with people they do not know. They stay where they are, with the same faces around them, and the care changes instead. Having nurses on the premises at all hours means changing health, skin and wound care, complicated medication and support at the end of life can be managed here, alongside the GP and community teams. It also means that when a person begins to become unwell, we usually notice early. Around the clinical side, this is somewhere people live. We ask what an ordinary day looked like before somebody came to us and try to protect the parts that mattered. Relatives are welcome and we encourage them to visit, to join in and to tell us when we have got something wrong. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We also support younger adults and people recovering from an eating disorder, and we offer respite stays. Supporting a group of people this varied works because we plan with each one individually. Somebody rebuilding after a difficult period needs something quite different from an older resident who can no longer manage alone, and both should be able to live here on their own terms. The basics apply to everybody. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want. Privacy is respected, personal care is given quietly and at the person's own pace, and rooms hold their own belongings. Where somebody has mental health needs, we agree in advance what helps when things become difficult. Where a person is in recovery from an eating disorder, mealtimes are handled calmly and according to the plan agreed with them and the professionals involved. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community teams, and families hear from us early. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. As a residential setting our work is daily life supported well, with community health professionals involved when someone needs them. What we aim for is a house where people are known rather than managed. That sounds obvious and it takes discipline, because the pressures of a rota pull the other way. It means unrushed help with washing and dressing, medication given reliably, food worth looking forward to and staff who notice when a resident is quieter than usual. For people living with dementia we keep the routine predictable and the faces familiar, and we ask relatives for the details of a life that no assessment captures. Where sight or hearing is poor we check aids are working and adapt how we communicate. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather people came and saw the home than took our word for it.

Belvedere is a residential care home in Totnes, Devon, supporting adults living with mental health conditions, including many younger adults. Respite stays are available too. We are a house rather than a unit, and that distinction matters to us. Stability usually grows out of ordinary daily life rather than out of being closely managed, so people here have their own room, their own routine and a real voice in how the house is run. Our job is to be reliable and to know people well. That means staff who notice when something is shifting before it becomes a crisis, support with medication and appointments that is dependable without being overbearing, and practical help with cooking, budgeting and giving a week some structure so that independence is something a person can actually use. Some of the people we support are working towards a place of their own and we plan for that in detail rather than leaving it as a distant idea. Others need somewhere settled for longer, which is an equally good outcome. We work closely with community mental health teams and social workers. The Garden House in Bristol provides both residential and nursing care for older people and younger adults, including many residents living with dementia and people with a physical disability. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Being able to provide nursing on site matters a great deal, because it means a person's health needs can be met here rather than becoming the reason for another move at exactly the point when they are least able to manage one. The risk in a home with nursing is that the clinical side comes to dominate, and we watch for that. Getting up at your own hour, eating something you actually want, keeping your own things around you and having someone sit down beside you rather than stand over you are not extras. For residents living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar, and we ask families for the life history that makes conversation possible. Where someone has a physical disability we take trouble over how help with washing, dressing and moving is given, since the manner of it matters as much as the outcome. Pippin House is a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon, supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, adults with mental health needs, adults with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss, older people and younger adults. The people who live here have very different lives, so we do not run the house to one timetable. We support people to get up when they choose, eat what they like, keep up with family and friends, get out to college, work, appointments and the things they enjoy, and take the everyday risks that any adult is entitled to take. Help with personal care, medication and health needs is part of what we do, but the point of the place is that it is home. Communication comes first here. We learn how each person shows a preference, a worry or a refusal, whether in words, signs, pictures or behaviour, and we act on what they tell us rather than on what is convenient. Where someone lives with sight or hearing loss we adapt how we work so they are not left out of decisions about their own life. Respite stays are available too, giving families a break and giving the person staying a change of scene and a little more independence. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The measure we care about more is whether people here are living the life they want, which we review with them regularly. • Care Home

Kahanah House is a residential care home in Exmouth, Devon. We support adults living with mental health conditions, including younger adults, in a setting that feels like a house on a street rather than an institution. Recovery is not a straight line, and we do not pretend otherwise. Some of the people who live here are steady and getting on with things. Others are having a harder stretch. Our role is to be reliable through both: to know somebody well enough to notice early when things are shifting, to support medication and appointments without taking over, and to work alongside community mental health teams so that everyone is pulling the same way. Day to day, we support people to look after themselves and their space, to manage money, to cook, to keep in touch with family and friends, and to use what Exmouth has to offer. Independence is the point. Where somebody wants to move on to their own tenancy in time, we help them build towards it rather than treating a place here as the end of the road. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family a planned break or give somebody a period of steadier support when they need it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking for a placement, please contact us and we will be honest with you about whether we are the right fit.

Summerhill Residential Care Home is in Ferndown, Dorset, and we provide a settled, comfortable home for older people who can no longer manage easily on their own. Many of our residents are living with dementia. We keep the day unhurried and familiar, we avoid unnecessary change, and we spend time early on learning about somebody's life, work, family and habits, because that tells us far more about how to care for them than a list of needs ever could. We also support residents with physical disabilities and residents with sight or hearing loss, adjusting how we communicate and how the home is arranged so that everyone can take part in ordinary daily life. People here decide how their days go. Some prefer company and whatever is happening in the lounge; others would rather have their own room, their own radio and their own peace. Both are right. Families are welcome whenever suits them, and we keep relatives properly in the picture. We also offer respite stays, for family carers who need a planned break and for people needing a period of support after illness or a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as a floor rather than a ceiling. If you are looking at homes around Ferndown, please come and visit. See the place on an ordinary day and ask us whatever you want to know.

    • Care Home

Sunnyside House is a residential care home in Gloucester supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism, including younger adults moving into adult services for the first time. That transition is a big one and it is often harder on families than on anybody else. We try to make it a beginning rather than a loss. The people who live here are adults and we support them to run their lives as adults do, with choices about their day, their room, their money and their company, and with help where help is genuinely needed. We support people to build on what they can already do, whether that is cooking, shopping, travelling around Gloucester independently, keeping up with college or work, or managing their own appointments. Communication is planned around each individual, since being properly understood is what makes choice real rather than theoretical, and we take change at a pace people can actually manage. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and anyone considering a place is welcome to visit and meet us first.

In practice, this means families can trust that their loved one is receiving skilled, attentive care in a genuinely homely setting, whether their stay is short term or a permanent move. At present, Clover Grove Residential Care Home has not yet received a CQC overall rating. For families, this simply means the home is either newly registered or awaiting its first formal inspection. We remain fully committed to meeting and exceeding the standards set by the Care Quality Commission, and we welcome open conversations with families about our approach, our values and the everyday care we provide. Transparency and trust sit at the heart of everything we do. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions that accompany that search. We warmly invite you to get in touch with us at Clover Grove Residential Care Home to arrange a visit, meet our team and see for yourself the caring community we have built in Broadstone. Buckland Court is a residential care home in Salisbury, Wiltshire. We care for older people and younger adults, including many residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. As a residential setting our work is daily life supported well, with general practitioners, district nurses and other community professionals brought in when they are needed. What we aim for is a house where people are known rather than managed. That sounds obvious and it takes discipline, because the pressures of a rota pull the other way. It means unrushed help with washing and dressing, medication given reliably, food worth looking forward to and staff who notice when a resident is quieter than usual. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out here than have a family come across it later. There is an agreed plan for the areas identified, we are working through it and being held to it, and anyone considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what has not yet.

    • Care Home

Penmount Grange is a residential care home in Bodmin, Cornwall. We provide a settled home for older people, and we also support adults with learning disabilities and autism and adults with physical disabilities. Many of the people who live here are living with dementia. Our approach rests on patience and familiarity. The day has a shape without being run to a timetable, surroundings stay recognisable, and we avoid changing things without good reason. We take time early on to learn about somebody's life, work, family and habits, asking relatives for the small details as well as the medical ones, because those are usually what helps most on a difficult afternoon. Because the people here have different needs, we adapt rather than expecting everyone to fit one routine. For residents with a learning disability or autism, that means paying attention to sensory needs and to how much notice somebody wants before anything changes. For residents with physical disabilities it usually means the right equipment, enough time, and careful attention to what a person can still do independently. Respite stays are available as well, for family carers needing a planned break and for people needing support after illness or a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit us and see the home as it is on an ordinary day.

Iota Care is a residential home in Plymouth supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people living with mental ill health, physical disabilities or sensory loss. We also support people living with an eating disorder, which asks for patience, close working with health teams and a steady, unanxious atmosphere around food. We keep things individual. Everyone here has a plan that they have had a proper say in, written in a way they can follow, and staff are expected to work to it rather than to a house routine. Where speech is hard we use whatever communication a person already trusts, and we take the trouble to become fluent in it. People choose how their day goes. Some are out a good deal, at activities, at work or seeing family across the city; others prefer the house to be quiet and predictable. We arrange support to fit either and change it as people change. Respite stays are available too, giving families a break while their relative stays somewhere with staff who understand what they need. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that, though what we would rather you judged us on is how the house feels when you walk into it. • Care Home

Clifftop Care Home is in Swanage, Dorset, and we provide residential care for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult. We are clear about what we are and what we are not. This is not a nursing home. It is a place to live, where the parts of the day that have become hard are taken care of and the rest still belongs to the person. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing and medication. Meals are cooked on the premises, laundry gets done, and doctors and district nurses come in when somebody needs them. For a great many older people that turns out to be exactly the right amount of support. It takes away the effort and the worry without taking away the independence, which is the balance people are usually after and too rarely offered. Swanage is a fine place to grow old in, with the sea close by, and we help people get out into it and keep up with the things and the people that matter to them. Respite and short stays are available, whether for a planned break for a family carer or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see the place for yourself.

Watermeadow Grange is a residential care home in Exeter caring for older people, including those living with dementia, those with physical disabilities and those with sight or hearing loss. We also support younger adults, and respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We try to run this as a home rather than a service. Residents get up when they are ready, eat what they want, keep their own routines and have a real say in how their support is given. Rooms belong to the people living in them, and we encourage families to bring in furniture, photographs and the things that make a space feel like somebody's own. Supporting someone living with dementia takes patience and steadiness above all. We keep routines familiar, surroundings easy to understand and staffing as consistent as we can manage, and we ask families to share the person's history so our team can make sense of what is being said and respond to the feeling behind it. For residents with physical disabilities or reduced sight and hearing, the right equipment and sensible adjustments are what make independence possible, so we arrange those rather than simply doing more for people. Families are welcome and we would far rather hear a concern early than have you worry quietly at home. If you are considering a move, please come and look round and take your time deciding.

Lynwood House is a small residential home in Radstock supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Keeping the house small is deliberate. It means everybody knows each other, the atmosphere stays calm, and staff notice quickly when somebody is not quite themselves. This is a home rather than a setting. People choose how their own room looks, join in with the shopping and cooking if they want to, and have a genuine say in how the household runs. Routines are built around the individual, including the ones that need to stay exactly the same, because predictability is often what allows a person to relax enough to try something new. We agree support with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, and we take the trouble to learn it properly rather than guessing. Being understood is the foundation of everything else. Life here is meant to include the world outside. People get out to activities, to see family, to places that have become part of the week, and we provide as much or as little support as that actually takes. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a break while their relative stays somewhere familiar. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The Shores is a residential care home in Poole. We support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose family carer needs one. The house is run around the people who live in it. Everyone has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they want their week to contain. Some people here like a clear structure and say so when it slips. Others prefer to take things as they come. People go out locally and along the coast, keep up college, work, clubs and family contact, and we treat that as the purpose of the place. Where somebody has a physical disability, we work around what they can do for themselves and make sure equipment and arrangements support that rather than get in the way. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure the whole team knows. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause, and any restriction on freedom is agreed properly, recorded and reviewed. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit.

Care is not one size fits all, and we are mindful that each person has their own history, preferences, and routines. We try to honour that as much as possible, whether that means how someone likes to spend their morning, the food they enjoy, or simply the way they prefer to be spoken to. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in an overall rating of Good, which reflects the effort our team puts in every single day. That said, we never see a good rating as a reason to stop improving. We are always looking at how we can do things better and how we can make Sandmar an even more comfortable and supportive place to be. If you would like to find out more about life at Sandmar or to arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Exeter, offering a home to older people who need support with daily life. That includes people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also take respite bookings for shorter stays. The people who live here have had long and varied lives, and we think a care home works best when it makes room for that rather than flattening everybody into the same routine. We ask about how somebody has always run their day, what they enjoy, what they would rather avoid and who they want to see. Then we build the support around it. Sight and hearing loss in particular change what good care looks like. How you approach somebody, how you announce yourself, how a room is arranged, how much time you leave for a reply. These are small adjustments that make the difference between somebody feeling included and somebody feeling shut out, and we expect our staff to make them without being asked. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a home for a relative, please come and see us. We would much rather you formed your own view of the place. Contact us and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits your family.

We are a residential care home in Hayle, Cornwall, offering a settled home to older people who need support with everyday life. We also take people for respite stays, whether that is planned ahead so a family carer can have a proper break, or arranged more quickly while somebody recovers after an illness. Most of the people who live here have long connections with this part of Cornwall, and we try to keep the home part of the place rather than separate from it. Families come and go as they like, and we would much rather somebody had a cup of tea in their own room with their daughter than sat formally in a lounge at a set visiting time. The things that make a care home good are mostly small and daily. Getting up when you are ready. Eating what you actually want. Staff who know your name, your family and how you take your tea, and who can tell when you are not quite yourself. All of that rests on having a team who stay, which is why we put so much effort into looking after ours. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a home for a relative, please come and see us. Please contact us and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits your family, and we will answer whatever you want to ask.

We are a residential care home in Ferndown, Dorset, providing a home for older people who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia. We also take respite bookings, either planned ahead so a family carer can have a proper break or arranged more quickly when somebody needs care for a period. Moving into a care home is a considerable change, and the first weeks matter more than anything that comes later. We spend them learning how somebody has always done things. When they like to wake and go to bed, what they will eat and what they will not touch, whether they want company or their own space, what they used to do for work or for pleasure. Care that ignores all that may be safe enough, but it will not feel like living anywhere. For people living with dementia the steadiness of the day does much of the work. Familiar faces, an unhurried pace and staff who can read what a person is telling them when the words have become hard to find. That kind of understanding only comes from knowing somebody well, which is why keeping our team together matters so much. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families are welcome here and we would always rather you visited than relied on a description. Please contact us and we will arrange a time for you to come and look round.

Arranging and funding a care home place in the South West

The South West covers a broad stretch of England, from the coastal communities of Cornwall and Devon through Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Across this region our directory lists 1,362 residential care homes, ranging from small family-run houses to larger purpose-built settings. If you are beginning to think about a move into residential care, the first practical steps are usually the same wherever you live: understand the level of support needed, find out what funding may be available, and get a realistic sense of local fees before you shortlist homes.

Starting with a care needs assessment

A care needs assessment is the formal way to establish what daily help someone requires, and it is the gateway to any publicly funded support. You can request one through the local authority Adult Social Care team, and the assessment is free regardless of income. A social worker or assessor will look at personal care, mobility, medication, memory, nutrition and social contact, then produce a written summary of eligible needs. This document is useful even for people who expect to pay privately, because it gives care homes a clear starting point when discussing whether they can meet the person's needs.

Funding, means testing and typical costs

After the needs assessment, a separate financial assessment decides how much the local authority will contribute. Savings and capital thresholds apply, and the value of a property is usually included unless a spouse or certain other relatives still live there. Residential fees in the South West vary widely by area and by the type of home, with coastal towns and larger converted properties often sitting at the higher end. It is worth asking each shortlisted home for a written fee schedule that shows what is included and what is charged as an extra, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted trips.

Choosing between care homes in the South West

With more than 1,300 residential settings in the region, filtering the list is the real challenge. Every home in our directory carries a Care Quality Commission status, and across the South West the current sample includes Outstanding ratings such as Firgrove House, Ridgeway House and Harbour Rise Rest Home, a large majority rated Good, a smaller number rated Requires Improvement including Grange Court, Holly Tree Cottage, Chosen Court and Nutley Lodge Care Home, and a handful not yet rated such as Osborne House and St Omer Residential Care Ltd.

Reading CQC reports properly

The overall rating is a useful headline, but the five key questions underneath it tell you far more. Look at whether the home is Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led, and pay particular attention to the date of the last inspection. A home rated Requires Improvement that has since had a positive follow-up visit may be a very different proposition to one where concerns are unresolved. Homes that are not yet rated are often newer registrations, so ask the manager directly about staffing, training and clinical oversight.

What a visit should tell you

Try to visit at different times of day. Look at how staff greet residents by name, whether call bells are answered promptly, and whether communal areas feel lived in rather than staged. Ask to see a sample care plan, the activities programme for the last month, and the most recent menu. Homes such as Cathedral View, Menna House, Courtlands Care Home, Chard Manor and OSJCT Marden Court are examples from our South West listings, but the right choice depends on location, atmosphere and the specific needs of your relative rather than name recognition.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in the South West

How many care homes are there in the South West?

The South West has 1,362 CQC registered care homes: 62 Outstanding, 1,091 Good, 140 Requires improvement, 7 Inadequate, 62 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

How much does a care home cost in the South West?

Self-funders are typically asked £1,400 to £1,650 a week. Middle half of prices from 52 South West homes. Median £1,549. Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price.

Which care homes in the South West were inspected most recently?

The Yelverton Residential Home (30 September 2026), Ladden View (29 September 2026) and Southlands Residential Care Home (28 September 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can the local authority fund a care home placement in the South West?

Yes, the local authority can fund all or part of a residential placement following a needs assessment and a financial assessment. If someone has capital below the upper threshold and eligible needs, the local authority will contribute towards fees, though the person is still expected to pay an assessed contribution from income such as pensions. Where savings and property equity are above the threshold, the person usually pays their own fees until their capital falls to the relevant level. It is worth asking about deferred payment agreements if the main asset is a home that cannot easily be sold.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the South West?

You can contact the local authority Adult Social Care service directly and request an assessment for yourself or a relative, and referrals can also come through a GP or hospital discharge team. The assessment is free and does not depend on income. An assessor will visit in person or speak by phone and video, and will consider practical daily tasks alongside safety, mental wellbeing and social contact. You will receive a written outcome that can be shared with any care home you approach.

How far in advance should I start looking for a care home in the South West?

Where possible, begin exploring options several months before a move is likely, because the most sought-after homes in the South West often have waiting lists. Starting early also allows time for a proper needs assessment, financial planning and unhurried visits. In urgent situations, for example after a hospital admission, decisions sometimes have to be made within days, and the local authority hospital team can help identify homes with immediate vacancies. Even in a crisis, try to visit at least two homes before committing.

Which providers in the South West offer residential care?

Our directory currently lists 1,362 residential care homes across the South West, spanning Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol. These include small homes such as Breage House, Inglenook House and Katherine House Rest Home, alongside larger settings such as Regency Manor Care Home and Lakeside Care Home. CQC ratings across the sample include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and not yet rated. You can filter the full list on Care Assura by location, rating and specialism to narrow the choice.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in the South West?

Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio at different times of day, how care plans are reviewed, and what happens if a resident's needs increase. Enquire about the activities on offer, access to gardens or outings, and how the home manages relationships with GPs, district nurses and pharmacists. Check the fee structure carefully and confirm what is included, what counts as an extra, and how future increases are handled. Finally, ask to speak to a relative of a current resident if that is possible.

What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides help with personal care such as washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, along with companionship and activities, but does not have qualified nurses on duty around the clock. A nursing home is registered to provide nursing care, meaning a registered nurse is on shift day and night to manage more complex clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or advanced dementia. All 1,333 homes on this South West page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is often better to choose a home already registered to provide it.
