Branksome Heights is a nursing home in Bournemouth. We provide both nursing and residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Offering both nursing and residential care in one home means people do not have to move on when their health changes. Somebody who arrives needing very little can stay put as needs increase, keeping the same room, the same staff and the same company. For a great many families that continuity is the single most important thing we provide. Nurses are here at all hours, so medication, skin care, nutrition and pain are managed on site and changes in health are noticed by people who know how somebody normally is. Alongside that, we work hard at the ordinary parts of the day, because being properly cared for and having a life worth living are not the same thing. Where sight or hearing has failed, we say who has come into the room and describe what is happening rather than assuming it is obvious. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care locally.

Chestnuts is a residential care home in Weymouth providing care for older people, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with a physical disability or with sight or hearing loss. Our concern is that people are known rather than simply looked after. We take time at the start to learn about somebody's life, their family and their habits, and we use that to shape their days here. Care planned without that information tends to be a list of tasks, and a list of tasks is not care. Staff help with washing and dressing, with transfers and moving safely, with medication and with meals and drinks, and they are trained for the particular needs of the people living here. For those with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings familiar, and we work at understanding what somebody is communicating when words have become difficult. The home is somewhere people live. Rooms are personalised, meals are cooked here with a genuine choice, there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and visitors are welcome. Respite and short stays can be arranged for families needing a break or people recovering after illness. If you would like to look round, please telephone us and we will arrange a time.

Tamar House is a residential care home in Plymouth, caring for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a real say in how their day is spent. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. We also care for people living with a physical disability, where good support is largely about practical independence and dignity. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. The better test is the everyday evidence, whether people are up and occupied and whether relatives feel able to raise a concern early. Please come and see for yourself.

Greycliffe Manor is a residential care home in Torquay, caring for older people from across Torbay and the surrounding area. We offer permanent residential places and planned respite stays, and we support residents living with dementia and those whose physical disabilities make life at home difficult. We try to run a household rather than an institution. Residents keep their own routines as far as they can, there is time in the day for a proper conversation, and meals are a real part of life here with an alternative always available. People are encouraged to bring their own furniture and pictures, since a room only becomes yours once your own things are in it. Dementia care starts with life history. Knowing a resident's trade, their family, their habits and what has always comforted them tells us more about how to support them than any general guidance. When someone is distressed we look for the reason behind it rather than reaching for a standard answer. Support for physical disability is about access rather than limitation. We plan and equip so that reduced mobility does not shrink someone's world to a single chair, and getting out of the building matters to us. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and visit us on an ordinary day. It will tell you far more than any description could.

Windward House is a residential care home at South Brent in Devon, and we support a broader group of people than many homes take on. Older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Adults living with mental ill health. People with physical disabilities. Younger adults. Respite stays are available as well. A mixed household only works if people are treated as individuals rather than as categories, and that is how we try to run the place. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of hands on help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want stability, company when they choose it, and a household that holds together through a difficult week. For residents living with dementia we keep routines and surroundings familiar and give people time instead of hurrying them along. For those living with mental ill health the valuable thing is usually steadiness: a team who know them and no drama when a bad stretch comes. For residents with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. Getting out matters too. This is a good part of Devon to be in, and we would rather support somebody to go where they want than fill an afternoon on their behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit on an ordinary day and take your time deciding.

Here at The Pines, we are a residential care home based in Redruth, Cornwall, and we are proud to support the people who live with us to lead full, comfortable and meaningful lives. We specialise in supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism, as well as younger adults who need a caring and structured environment to call home. Alongside our permanent residential placements, we also offer respite care, giving individuals and their families the opportunity to take a break knowing their loved one is in a safe and welcoming place. Cornwall is a wonderful part of the world, and we feel that living here genuinely shapes the relaxed, community rooted atmosphere we try to create at The Pines. We make the most of what the local area has to offer, encouraging the people we support to stay connected to their communities and to enjoy the countryside and coastline on their doorstep. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we never take that trust lightly. Our focus is on truly getting to know each person, understanding their history, preferences and goals, and building support around them as individuals rather than fitting them into a one size fits all routine. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good, which reflects the genuine commitment of our whole team to providing thoughtful, consistent and respectful care every day. If you are looking for residential support for yourself or someone close to you, whether on a longer term or short term respite basis, we would love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us at The Pines to have an informal conversation about how we might be able to help.

Hillside House is a residential care home in Sidmouth, Devon. We are home to older people, including people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, and respite stays are part of what we do. Our list is short. Warm, well fed, promptly helped, and left in peace when peace is what is wanted. Residents keep their own hours. Where a resident communicates differently, whether through sight, hearing or anything else, we settle that properly at the start and everybody uses the same approach consistently. Done badly it makes a person's world much smaller than it needs to be. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us. Relatives are part of how we work rather than visitors to it. They usually know things about a person that no assessment captures, and we ask them. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are pleased with it and wary of what it can imply, since a rating covers a period rather than a promise. What keeps it true is the ordinary daily attention that earned it, and asking relatives what we have stopped noticing.

We are a residential home in Bristol supporting adults with learning disabilities, autistic people and people living with mental health conditions, including younger adults. The house is run as a household rather than a service. People living here have their own rooms and their own belongings and a real say in how the place works, from what is cooked to what happens at the weekend. For adults who have often had decisions taken on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is central to what we are trying to do. Support is arranged around the individual. For some people the priority is staying well: medication, appointments, noticing early when things are becoming difficult and having staff nearby who know them well enough to see it coming. For others it is about doing more, whether that means work, college, volunteering, managing money with a hand from us, or getting out regularly and keeping up with family. Predictability counts for a good deal here, particularly for autistic people, so we keep our staffing as consistent as we can and avoid changing arrangements without warning. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place for yourself or someone in your family, please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

Oaklands is a residential care home in Plymouth. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people with visual or hearing impairment. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Because the people who live here have quite different needs, we plan for each person individually rather than running a single day that everybody has to fit into. For one resident a good day is calm, quiet and entirely predictable; for another it is sociable and busy and out in Plymouth. Both take thought to support well. We help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility, and we try to give only as much help as is genuinely wanted. Independence is easily eroded by being over helpful, and we watch for that. For residents living with dementia and for autistic residents, we pay close attention to environment, routine, familiarity of staff and giving proper warning before anything changes. Where somebody has a sensory impairment we adapt how we communicate and keep things where they expect to find them. Respite stays are planned with the same care as any other admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we treat as a foundation rather than a conclusion. You are welcome to come and visit Oaklands, and we would much rather you saw the home for yourself than took anything here on trust.

Longridge Court is a residential care home in Stroud in Gloucestershire, supporting adults, including younger adults, who have a learning disability or autism. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We think of the people here as living in their own home rather than being placed in a service, and we try to make that real. People arrange their own rooms, keep their own routines and have a genuine say in how the house is run. Support is offered for the parts of life that are hard and withdrawn from the parts that are not, because independence grows when it is given room. Day to day that might mean cooking and shopping together, sorting out money, learning a route into town, keeping a job or a course going, or having the right help with appointments and letters. Where somebody communicates without speech we take the time to learn how they do communicate and we write it down so that all our staff respond in the same way rather than guessing. When life becomes difficult we look for the reason instead of the label, and we agree in advance, in calm moments, what actually helps. We work with families, social workers and health colleagues and we keep them properly informed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a place here, come and see the house as often as you need before deciding.

Charlton Kings Care Home is a residential home in Cheltenham. We care for older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. What we provide is practical daily help: assistance to wash and dress, medication managed properly, meals cooked on the premises, support to move about safely and staff available through the night. What we try hardest to get right is the manner of it, because being helped with intimate things should feel unhurried and ordinary rather than clinical. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent, and we ask families for the history that helps us make sense of somebody when words are hard to find. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings where they are expected and check we have been understood. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to help somebody regain confidence after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across Gloucestershire are welcome to visit.

Woodside Farm House is a small residential home on the outskirts of St Austell, and we support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults to live the kind of settled, ordinary life that anyone would want. The house is a home before it is anything else, and we work hard to keep it feeling that way. People have their own space to retreat to, a kitchen they are welcome in, and a say in what happens from one day to the next. Everyone here has different ideas about how they want to spend their time. Some people hold down regular activities during the week, or volunteer, or simply like a run out to the coast and a walk somewhere familiar. Others need things to stay quiet and predictable, and we plan around that without making a fuss about it. Support is agreed with each person, and where it helps we use pictures, objects or whatever else makes communication easier, because being understood is the foundation of everything else we do. We also offer respite, which gives families a proper break while their relative stays somewhere they already know and where staff already know them. Short stays are planned carefully so that nobody arrives to a house full of strangers. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to look round, or talk through whether we might suit someone in your family, you are very welcome to contact us.

We are a residential and dementia care home in Corsham in Wiltshire, providing a home for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period or whose usual carer needs a break. Coming to live in a care home is a significant thing to do, and the first weeks matter more than any account of the building. We spend them learning about the person rather than settling them into our routine. What they did for a living, what they cannot be doing with, what time they have always had their breakfast, whether they would rather be in company or left in peace with the radio on. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them. Relatives very often know exactly what helps, and we would far rather be told at the beginning than work it out across six months. The rest of the day belongs to the people living it, and we take the practical side seriously too: food worth looking forward to, medication handled carefully, quick response when somebody is unwell, and plain conversations with families when things change. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

Westward Care Home is a residential home in Dawlish, Devon. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. The people who live here choose how their rooms look, have a real say in meals and in the shape of the week, and are supported to keep up the relationships and interests that matter to them. The ordinary business of having preferences and making choices should not quietly disappear because somebody lives in a supported setting, and a fair amount of our work is simply making sure it does not. Support is planned around each person. For some that means a full and busy week out in Dawlish and the surrounding area, with work, college, clubs and family time. For others it means a quieter and highly predictable rhythm, which is an equally good way to live. With autistic people in particular we pay close attention to routine, to warning of change and to the sensory side of the environment. We give practical help with personal care, medication, meals and mobility, and we aim to give only as much as is wanted so that people keep hold of what they can do for themselves. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Westward for someone, please get in touch and come and look round.

Atlantis Care Home is in Looe, Cornwall, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with a visual or hearing impairment. A house shared by adults of different ages and very different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely tolerated. Our residents do not want the same day as one another. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own company until the afternoon. Some need a great deal of practical help, others mainly a settled base and staff who know them properly. Being by the sea helps more than it is usually given credit for. A short outing, fresh air, a change of view, all of these matter a great deal to people whose world has narrowed since they stopped living independently. Respite stays are available for short periods of care or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

Averlea Residential Home is a care home in St Austell, providing residential care for older people in a part of Cornwall that many of the people living with us have known all their lives. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own things around them and as much say as possible in how their day goes. We support older people who can no longer manage safely at home, and we have particular experience in caring for people living with dementia. That work depends on continuity and patience, on knowing what someone's day used to look like and keeping as much of it as we can, and on responding to distress by understanding what sits behind it rather than simply managing it. We also offer respite stays for people who need care for a short while or whose family carer needs a break, and we plan those stays with the same care as a permanent move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement, and we would rather be straightforward about that than skirt round it. We have worked through the findings and our focus has been on the practical things that affect daily life here. We would encourage anyone considering Averlea to visit, talk to the team and ask us directly what has changed and how we know it has.

More Hall Convent is a residential care home in Stroud in Gloucestershire. We care for older people, including people with physical disabilities and people whose sight or hearing is impaired, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. This is a quiet place and that is part of what we offer. The pace here is unhurried, the surroundings are peaceful and there is space to sit, to think and to be left alone when that is what somebody wants. Equally, nobody is obliged to be quiet or solitary, and there is company for those who would rather have it. Our staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, and they do it in a way that keeps somebody's dignity intact. Where physical disabilities are involved we make sure the equipment and the practical support are right. Where sight or hearing has changed we pay attention to the adjustments that keep a person connected rather than cut off, from lighting and contrast to the way information is given. Rooms are personal and visitors are welcome without appointment. We would always rather raise a concern with relatives early than leave a worry sitting. Respite guests get the same care as anybody living here permanently, and for some families a short stay is a sensible way of seeing how things go before a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us and ask whatever you would like to ask.

Here at Stewart Court, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Bristol, supporting people whose needs span learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions and younger adults who require specialist care and support. We also offer respite care, giving family members and carers the opportunity to rest while knowing their loved ones are in safe and capable hands. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our whole team puts into making Stewart Court a place where people feel comfortable, respected and at home. That rating matters to us not as a badge, but as confirmation that what we do day to day is making a real difference to the people who live here. Our approach is straightforward. We take time to get to know each person, understanding their history, their preferences and what a good day looks and feels like for them. Care plans are built around the individual rather than routine, and we regularly review and update them to make sure they continue to reflect each person's changing needs and goals. We understand that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone close to you, is rarely a simple decision. We welcome anyone who would like to visit and see things for themselves, speak with our team and get a feel for the environment before making any choices. We would rather you asked every question you have than felt uncertain at any stage. Stewart Court is a place where people are treated with dignity and where the small things, a favourite meal, a familiar routine, a friendly face at the door, are understood to matter just as much as the clinical and personal care we provide. We are glad you are considering us.

We are The Malthouse, a residential care home in Gillingham caring for older people. What we offer is residential care done properly rather than anything more elaborate. Help with washing, dressing and moving about safely. Support with medication. Meals worth sitting down to. Warm rooms, and company for those who want it. We are not a nursing home and we are clear with families about that, because the worst outcome for anybody is moving somewhere that cannot meet their needs. The home is run around the people living in it. Nobody is woken to suit a rota. Breakfast happens when somebody comes down rather than at a fixed hour. Some residents like the lounge and the conversation that fills it, others would rather keep to their own room and their own quiet, and neither choice needs defending. Our staff stay long enough to know people properly, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter than usual or off their food before it becomes something serious. We keep families in the picture and would far rather make an early call about a small worry. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which helps family carers needing a break and people building their strength back after hospital. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. We are Tudor Cottage, a residential care home in Axminster, Devon. We look after older people, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. We keep things deliberately homely. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you like to wake, where you want your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly with the paper: those decisions stay with you. A good deal of what makes a day here pleasant is quite ordinary, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. For people living with dementia the useful work is in the detail. Knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, being willing to go at their pace rather than the rota's. Done properly that prevents a great deal of distress before it starts. We also think a home should stay part of its own town, so we support people to keep up the connections they already have, whether family nearby, a church or a club. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Hamelin is a residential care home near Totnes in Devon, supporting younger adults. We also offer respite stays. We treat this as where people live rather than where they have been placed. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make that possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf, even when the quicker route is tempting on a busy morning. Because the people living here are younger adults, we try hard to avoid the assumptions that settle over care settings. Nobody here has reached the end of anything. There are plans, friendships, opinions and ambitions, and where somebody wants a job, a course or a club we treat that as the purpose of the support rather than a pleasant extra. Being in a small Devon town helps with that, because people become known locally and can get about on their own terms. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what would make this a better place to live, and we act on what we are told.

Puddavine Court is a residential care home in Totnes, Devon, and we support older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, those with physical disabilities and those living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available as well. What we aim for is an ordinary life with help attached rather than a routine everybody has to fit into. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, whether they want company or quiet, and what they would like to eat. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing only as much as somebody actually needs, because taking over is easy and rarely helpful. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and the practical side of it is unglamorous. Keeping the daily rhythm and surroundings consistent. Giving somebody time to find their words instead of finishing their sentence. Knowing enough about a person's earlier life to understand what a worry is really about. Families hold most of that knowledge and we ask for it early. For residents with physical disabilities our attention goes to equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. For those living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication makes most of the difference. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

We are Two Wells, a small residential care home in Cranborne, Dorset. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays. Being a small house is the point of us. It means the people who live here are not managing a constant stream of unfamiliar staff, that routines can be genuinely individual rather than set by the demands of a large rota, and that we tend to know without being told when somebody is having a difficult day. We start from what each person wants their week to look like and work back to the support that makes it possible. That might take in college or work, a regular swim, cooking their own meals, seeing family, or getting out into the countryside and the nearest towns. Where somebody finds noise or change hard, we keep to a predictable rhythm and prepare properly for anything out of the ordinary. This is their home, so decisions about food, decoration and how time is spent belong to the people living in it. We also talk risks through with the person and with those who know them well, because being overprotective is easier for us and worse for them. Lilliput House is a residential care home in Poole, providing a comfortable and settled home for older people who find living alone has become difficult. We are a home rather than an institution, and we run it that way. People choose when they get up, where they sit, what they eat and how they spend the day. Care is given discreetly and with proper regard for privacy and dignity, and we support people to keep doing whatever they can still do for themselves. Staff here know everybody well, and it is that knowledge, rather than any policy, that makes the difference on an ordinary day. Families are an important part of the household. We welcome visitors, we keep relatives informed about how things are going, and we would far rather someone rang us with a worry than sat on it. We also offer respite stays. These suit people who need support for a short while after illness or a spell in hospital, and families who care for a relative at home and need a planned break without worrying about how they are being looked after. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as a starting point rather than something to rest on. - Care Home
Broughton Lodge is a residential care home at Burnham on Sea in Somerset, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available as well. Most of what makes a care home good is ordinary detail rather than anything grand. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time to find their words instead of finishing their sentences, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did for a living and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Families usually hold that story and we ask for it early. Getting out matters too. Being near the sea is worth something, and we would rather support somebody to go where they want to go than fill an afternoon on their behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

At Bridge House in Taunton, Somerset, we support adults with learning disabilities and autism, as well as younger adults who need a little more help to live well day to day. We are a residential care home, and the people who live with us are at the heart of everything we do here. We know that moving into a care home is a significant step, and we take that seriously. Our aim is for Bridge House to feel like a genuine home, not an institution. We want the people we support to feel comfortable, respected and heard, and we work hard to make sure that daily life here reflects each person's own preferences, routines and interests rather than ours. Supporting people with learning disabilities and autism means understanding that no two people are the same. Some of the people we care for communicate differently, experience the world differently, or need support that is carefully tailored and consistent. Our team takes the time to get to know each individual properly, building trust and understanding over time rather than making assumptions. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us as good. That matters to us, not as something to boast about, but because it reflects the kind of care we genuinely try to provide every single day. We are always looking at what we can do better, and we welcome feedback from the people we support and their families as part of that. If you are considering Bridge House for yourself or someone you care about, we would encourage you to come and visit us. There is no substitute for seeing a place for yourself and having a proper conversation. We are based in Taunton and are always happy to talk things through with you.

Here at Margaret Allen, we provide residential care for older adults in the heart of Tiverton, Devon. We are proud to have received a rating of "good" from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the hard work and commitment of our whole team. We support people living with a wide range of needs, including dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a short stay, whether to recover after a period of illness or to give family carers some time to rest. Our team has experience supporting people with eating disorders too, and we work closely with residents and their families to ensure care is tailored to the individual rather than shaped around a routine that suits the home. Life at Margaret Allen is built around the people who live here. We take time to get to know each resident, understanding what matters to them, what they enjoy and how they like their day to look. That might sound straightforward, but it shapes everything we do, from how we plan mealtimes to how we support someone through a difficult moment. Tiverton is a lovely town and we make the most of being part of its community. Families are always welcome here and we encourage their involvement in the life of the home. We believe that staying connected to the people and places that mean something to a resident is just as important as any clinical aspect of their care. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone you love, we would be very happy to have a conversation, show you around and answer any questions you might have. We want you to feel comfortable and confident in any decision you make.

We are Beach House, a residential care home in Poole. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We plan around individuals rather than around a single routine. The people living here have quite different notions of a good week. Some want to be busy, with work, college, sport or regular groups and plenty of getting out into the town and down to the water. Others want quiet and a rhythm they can rely on, and where change is unsettling we keep things steady and prepare carefully for anything unusual. Because we also support people with physical disabilities, a good deal of our attention goes on access, equipment and the practical business of getting about. Where those needs are met properly and without fuss, they stop shaping somebody's day and leave them free to think about the rest of their life. We are careful about independence too. If somebody can do a thing themselves, more slowly than we could do it for them, that is their time and their decision, and we work at their pace rather than ours. Northam Lodge is a residential care home near Bideford in Devon, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home first and a care setting second, and that shows in ordinary decisions rather than in anything we could claim here. People choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, when they get up and how the weekend goes. Where somebody can do something themselves, we support them to keep doing it even when stepping in would be faster. Communication is where we start rather than where we arrive. Where a person communicates differently, whether because of a sensory impairment or for any other reason, we sort that out properly before anything else, because the rest of our work depends on it. Being in a small coastal town helps, because people become known in the shops and cafes they use, and being recognised locally does more for confidence than arranged activity. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather you formed your view from an hour in the lounge than from anything here.

Upton Bay Care Home is a residential care home in Poole supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. The emphasis here is on daily life rather than clinical routine. Meals, company, familiar habits, visitors coming and going, time outside, and something in the day worth getting up for. Practical help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility runs alongside all of that rather than replacing it. The day belongs to the people who live here. When to get up, where to sit, what to eat, who to see, whether to join in or keep the door shut. Being moved along to suit a shift pattern is the thing that makes a care home feel institutional, and we work hard at avoiding it. For people living with dementia we plan around familiarity: consistent staff, consistent routines, and an approach that goes alongside the person rather than arguing with them. Where somebody is unsettled we look first for a cause we can put right, including pain, noise, boredom or simply needing the toilet. Settling in gets particular attention from us, because how the first few weeks go tends to shape everything afterwards. People bring their own furniture and pictures and find their own pace. Respite stays are available for planned family breaks. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Visitors are welcome without an appointment, and we would much rather you came on an ordinary day.

Wolborough Court is a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon, providing a permanent home for older people who need help with the practical side of everyday life. We try to keep the place domestic rather than institutional, with the ordinary rhythms of meals, company, fresh air and rest. Our support covers personal care, medication, eating well, moving about safely and having somebody about who notices when a resident is not quite themselves. We support people living with dementia, and we rely on continuity above all: staff who know a person's history and habits, a routine that does not keep shifting, and reassurance given as often as it is needed. We also care for residents with physical disabilities, adjusting how we help with mobility so that independence is kept wherever it can be, and we bring in community health professionals whenever something more clinical is required. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a proper rest and letting a prospective resident get the feel of the home before any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we treat that as a standard to hold rather than a badge to display. Riverview is a small residential home in Teignmouth, Devon, and it is home to adults with learning disabilities and to autistic adults. We also offer respite stays, planned well in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. We run this as the residents' house. People choose how their bedrooms look, they have a genuine say in the shopping and the meals, and they get involved in cooking, gardening and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers getting out to whatever somebody is interested in, whether that is work, a course, a club, the beach or a regular visit to family. Where we put most of our effort is understanding each person properly. Some people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or a device, and some tell us what they need through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write it down so it survives a change of shift, and we take advice from families and health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. The people who live here are the better judges of us, so please come and visit.

Here at Mead Field Manor Care Home in Banwell, North Somerset, we offer a warm and homely environment where residents feel genuinely valued and well looked after. We are proud to be part of a close knit community, and we work hard to make sure that everyone who comes through our doors feels at ease from the very first day. We support a wide range of needs under one roof. Our team has experience working with older people, those living with dementia, individuals with physical disabilities, and residents with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults who require residential care, and we offer respite stays for those who need a short term period of support, whether to recover after a hospital stay or to give family carers a well earned break. Dementia care is something we approach with particular thought and care. We understand how important consistency, familiarity and calm surroundings are for residents living with memory conditions, and we shape daily routines around what works best for each individual rather than applying a one size fits all approach. Residential care here is built around getting to know each person properly. What matters to them, how they like to spend their time, what they enjoy eating, who they like to see. These details shape the way we support people day to day, and we believe that good care is rooted in genuine relationships rather than just meeting basic needs. Banwell is a lovely village setting and we make the most of our surroundings where we can, encouraging residents to enjoy the gardens and stay connected with the local community whenever possible. If you would like to find out more about life at Mead Field Manor, we would be very happy to welcome you for a visit and show you around.

- Care Home
Shalom is a residential care home in Marlborough, Wiltshire, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite stays for people who need support for a shorter period or whose usual carer needs a break. We are a small home, and that shapes everything. People here know each other and know the staff well, and daily life feels like a household rather than a service being delivered. Residents have their own rooms and a genuine say in how their days go, what they eat and how they spend their time. Our job is to support people to be as independent as they want to be. For some that means building skills around cooking, money, travel or work. For others it means steady, familiar support so that life stays comfortable and they can carry on with the things they enjoy. Support plans are written with each person, using whatever way of communicating suits them best, and we pay close attention to what helps someone feel settled and what causes them stress. We are part of Marlborough rather than separate from it. People here go to the shops, to clubs and to see friends and family, with as much or as little support alongside them as they want. We work with community learning disability teams and local health services, and families and advocates are genuinely welcome. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

- Care Home
Park House Residential Home is in Weston Super Mare, providing residential care for older people who can no longer manage comfortably on their own. We are a small home and have no wish to be anything else, because it means the team genuinely know the people who live here, their routines, their families and what makes a day go well or badly. Our approach is straightforward. People keep their own habits, their own belongings and as much independence as they want. Some are up early and busy, others prefer a slow start and a quiet sitting room, and both are perfectly reasonable. Meals matter a great deal here, and so does the ordinary company of the house, so we put real effort into both. Respite stays are available too, whether somebody needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a genuine break. We plan short stays as carefully as a permanent move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is whether people who live here seem settled. Please come and see us.

We are a residential care home on Whitworth Road in Swindon, supporting younger adults and older people, including people with a learning disability, autistic people and people living with mental health needs. This is a house where adults live, not a unit where they have been placed, and we try to keep that distinction visible in how the place runs. People have their own rooms and their own belongings. They have a real say in the food, the shopping and the shape of the week. Where somebody wants to work, study, cook, travel or see friends, our job is to make it practical rather than to decide whether it is sensible. For residents with a learning disability, support usually means doing things alongside someone rather than for them, and being patient while a skill is properly learned. For autistic residents it means predictability, honest information about what is happening next, and taking seriously the things that make a space bearable or unbearable rather than treating them as awkwardness. For people living with mental health needs it means a steady presence through the difficult stretches and no treating a bad month as a failure. Communication takes most of our effort. Some of the people here do not use speech, and almost everything that goes wrong in settings like ours begins with somebody not being properly listened to. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Please visit, more than once if that helps, and meet the people who live here.

The Tobias Centre is a residential care home in Torquay in Torbay. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask instead of assuming, and being told no is a perfectly acceptable answer. Much of what we do is about widening what is possible rather than occupying time. Cooking something you actually want to eat. Getting confident with money. Managing a journey into town alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Some of it comes together quickly, some takes years and some never quite happens, and we do not treat the last of those as failure so long as the opportunity was genuinely there and nobody was pushed. Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so new staff respond identically, and keep checking we have understood. Torquay gives people the sea, the shops and plenty of reason to get out, and we use all of it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking what should be different.

We are a residential care home near Penzance, offering a home to older people who need support with daily life. That includes people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities. We also take respite bookings, whether planned in advance so a family carer can have a break or arranged more quickly when somebody needs care for a while. This corner of Cornwall is a good place to grow older, and a great many of the people who live here have been in the county all their lives. We try to keep the home connected to that rather than sealed off from it, and we make it easy for families to come and go. The everyday things are what make a care home work. Whether somebody gets up when they want to. Whether staff know which chair is theirs and how they take their tea. Whether a person who becomes anxious as the afternoon wears on is met with patience rather than a brisk routine. Those depend on a team who know the residents properly, which is why we care so much about keeping our staff. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families are welcome and we would much rather you came and saw the place for yourself. Please contact us and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits you.

Woodland View Lodge is a residential care home in Exeter, supporting older people and younger adults from across Devon, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. A care home is judged by its ordinary days rather than its brochure, so that is where our attention goes. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Personal care offered calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Rooms that look like they belong to the person living in them. Staff awake overnight. Enough happening in the house to give the day a shape, and nobody pressed into joining anything they have no interest in. People keep their own routines wherever we can arrange it, because a home that insists everyone rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has quietly stopped being a home. For residents with a physical disability, getting about matters enormously. Accessible bathrooms, the right equipment, and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move. Mobility lost because assistance was inconvenient is easy to cause and very hard to reverse, so we work at preventing it. Where dementia is part of somebody's life we work on familiarity and calm instead of correction, and we ask relatives early for the history that helps us reach a person when they are distressed. Families usually know things we could never guess. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see the home, unannounced if you prefer.

Here at Cavendish Care Home, we provide residential and dementia care for older people in the heart of Gloucester, Gloucestershire. We also offer respite care for those who need short term support, whether that is to recover after a hospital stay or to give a family carer some time to rest. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. That means getting to know each person properly, understanding their routines, their preferences, and the things that matter most to them, and making sure that carries through into every part of their day. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels warm and settled rather than clinical. For residents living with dementia, we focus on familiarity and calm, taking the time to understand each person's history and what helps them feel safe and comfortable. The surrounding area is known for its rolling landscapes, rich heritage, and strong sense of community, all of which help create a comforting backdrop for those who call Beaumont Court home. Within our walls, we aim to provide an environment that feels less like an institution and more like a familiar, homely place where residents can relax, socialise, and enjoy each day at their own pace. The care we provide at Beaumont Court is broad and thoughtfully tailored. We specialise in supporting older people, including those living with dementia, as well as adults with mental health needs, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairment. We also welcome younger adults who require residential support and offer respite care for those who need shorter stays, whether following a hospital admission, during a family carer's break, or simply as a trial before considering longer term arrangements. In practice, this breadth of experience means our team is well placed to adapt to the changing needs of each resident over time, so families can feel confident that their loved one will continue to be supported through different stages of their journey. We take time to understand personal histories, preferences, routines, and interests, because we believe truly good care begins with truly knowing the person. For families, this approach translates into peace of mind. Whether a loved one needs gentle reassurance during moments of confusion linked to dementia, practical assistance with mobility, sensory support, or emotional encouragement to build confidence again, our team endeavours to respond with patience, kindness, and respect. We work closely with relatives, keeping communication open and honest, because we recognise that placing trust in a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. Beaumont Court has been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission across every area assessed, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led, at its most recent inspection. This consistent rating reflects the standards we strive to uphold every day, from the quality of daily care and the effectiveness of our approach to the compassion shown by our team and the way our home is managed. For families, a Good rating across all five domains offers meaningful reassurance that independent inspectors have found the care provided here to meet the expected standards of quality and safety. If you are exploring residential care options in Launceston or the wider Cornwall area for yourself or someone you love, we would be delighted to hear from you. Choosing the right home is a deeply personal decision, and we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and arrange a visit so you can experience the atmosphere of Beaumont Court for yourself. Urmston House is a residential care home in Bristol supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with sight or hearing loss. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team responds in the same way. Predictability is what gives a person the confidence to try something new, and it is also what lets us notice early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace. Respite stays are available as well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure is whether people here seem at ease.

Arranging and funding a care home place in the South West
The South West covers a broad stretch of England, from the coastal communities of Cornwall and Devon through Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Across this region our directory lists 1,362 residential care homes, ranging from small family-run houses to larger purpose-built settings. If you are beginning to think about a move into residential care, the first practical steps are usually the same wherever you live: understand the level of support needed, find out what funding may be available, and get a realistic sense of local fees before you shortlist homes.
Starting with a care needs assessment
A care needs assessment is the formal way to establish what daily help someone requires, and it is the gateway to any publicly funded support. You can request one through the local authority Adult Social Care team, and the assessment is free regardless of income. A social worker or assessor will look at personal care, mobility, medication, memory, nutrition and social contact, then produce a written summary of eligible needs. This document is useful even for people who expect to pay privately, because it gives care homes a clear starting point when discussing whether they can meet the person's needs.
Funding, means testing and typical costs
After the needs assessment, a separate financial assessment decides how much the local authority will contribute. Savings and capital thresholds apply, and the value of a property is usually included unless a spouse or certain other relatives still live there. Residential fees in the South West vary widely by area and by the type of home, with coastal towns and larger converted properties often sitting at the higher end. It is worth asking each shortlisted home for a written fee schedule that shows what is included and what is charged as an extra, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted trips.
Choosing between care homes in the South West
With more than 1,300 residential settings in the region, filtering the list is the real challenge. Every home in our directory carries a Care Quality Commission status, and across the South West the current sample includes Outstanding ratings such as Firgrove House, Ridgeway House and Harbour Rise Rest Home, a large majority rated Good, a smaller number rated Requires Improvement including Grange Court, Holly Tree Cottage, Chosen Court and Nutley Lodge Care Home, and a handful not yet rated such as Osborne House and St Omer Residential Care Ltd.
Reading CQC reports properly
The overall rating is a useful headline, but the five key questions underneath it tell you far more. Look at whether the home is Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led, and pay particular attention to the date of the last inspection. A home rated Requires Improvement that has since had a positive follow-up visit may be a very different proposition to one where concerns are unresolved. Homes that are not yet rated are often newer registrations, so ask the manager directly about staffing, training and clinical oversight.
What a visit should tell you
Try to visit at different times of day. Look at how staff greet residents by name, whether call bells are answered promptly, and whether communal areas feel lived in rather than staged. Ask to see a sample care plan, the activities programme for the last month, and the most recent menu. Homes such as Cathedral View, Menna House, Courtlands Care Home, Chard Manor and OSJCT Marden Court are examples from our South West listings, but the right choice depends on location, atmosphere and the specific needs of your relative rather than name recognition.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in the South West
How many care homes are there in the South West?
The South West has 1,362 CQC registered care homes: 62 Outstanding, 1,091 Good, 140 Requires improvement, 7 Inadequate, 62 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
How much does a care home cost in the South West?
Self-funders are typically asked £1,400 to £1,650 a week. Middle half of prices from 52 South West homes. Median £1,549. Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price.
Which care homes in the South West were inspected most recently?
The Yelverton Residential Home (30 September 2026), Ladden View (29 September 2026) and Southlands Residential Care Home (28 September 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can the local authority fund a care home placement in the South West?
Yes, the local authority can fund all or part of a residential placement following a needs assessment and a financial assessment. If someone has capital below the upper threshold and eligible needs, the local authority will contribute towards fees, though the person is still expected to pay an assessed contribution from income such as pensions. Where savings and property equity are above the threshold, the person usually pays their own fees until their capital falls to the relevant level. It is worth asking about deferred payment agreements if the main asset is a home that cannot easily be sold.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the South West?
You can contact the local authority Adult Social Care service directly and request an assessment for yourself or a relative, and referrals can also come through a GP or hospital discharge team. The assessment is free and does not depend on income. An assessor will visit in person or speak by phone and video, and will consider practical daily tasks alongside safety, mental wellbeing and social contact. You will receive a written outcome that can be shared with any care home you approach.
How far in advance should I start looking for a care home in the South West?
Where possible, begin exploring options several months before a move is likely, because the most sought-after homes in the South West often have waiting lists. Starting early also allows time for a proper needs assessment, financial planning and unhurried visits. In urgent situations, for example after a hospital admission, decisions sometimes have to be made within days, and the local authority hospital team can help identify homes with immediate vacancies. Even in a crisis, try to visit at least two homes before committing.
Which providers in the South West offer residential care?
Our directory currently lists 1,362 residential care homes across the South West, spanning Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol. These include small homes such as Breage House, Inglenook House and Katherine House Rest Home, alongside larger settings such as Regency Manor Care Home and Lakeside Care Home. CQC ratings across the sample include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and not yet rated. You can filter the full list on Care Assura by location, rating and specialism to narrow the choice.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in the South West?
Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio at different times of day, how care plans are reviewed, and what happens if a resident's needs increase. Enquire about the activities on offer, access to gardens or outings, and how the home manages relationships with GPs, district nurses and pharmacists. Check the fee structure carefully and confirm what is included, what counts as an extra, and how future increases are handled. Finally, ask to speak to a relative of a current resident if that is possible.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides help with personal care such as washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, along with companionship and activities, but does not have qualified nurses on duty around the clock. A nursing home is registered to provide nursing care, meaning a registered nurse is on shift day and night to manage more complex clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or advanced dementia. All 1,333 homes on this South West page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is often better to choose a home already registered to provide it.
