About Clayfield Care Home
Here at Clayfield Care Home in Barnstaple, Devon, we provide a warm and supportive environment where the people who live with us are genuinely at the heart of everything we do. We specialise in a range of care needs, including older person care, residential care, dementia care, mental health support, physical disability care, and visual and hearing impairment support. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is to give a family carer some time to rest or to support recovery after a period of illness. Whatever brings someone to us, we work hard to make sure they feel safe, comfortable and truly at home. We are proud to have received a rating of "good" from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the consistent effort our whole team puts in day to day. It means a great deal to us, though we never see it as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can improve and make life better for the people in our care. Dementia care is an area we take particularly seriously. We understand how much it matters to families that their loved one is cared for by people who are calm, patient and genuinely understanding of the condition. We approach every person as an individual, taking time to learn about their life history, preferences and what brings them comfort. Our home is part of the Barnstaple community and we value those local connections. Families are always welcome, and we encourage them to stay involved in the lives of their loved ones as much as they wish. More about the care at Clayfield Care Home
Respite Care at Clayfield Care Home
Respite at Clayfield is offered to give a family carer time to rest or to support recovery after a period of illness. Short stays usually need booking well ahead and often carry a minimum length, so ask what applies. Pack medication and a note of routines, and treat the stay as a trial run for anything permanent.
Dementia Care at Clayfield Care Home
Calm, patient and genuinely understanding of the condition is how this home describes what families want from dementia staff, and what it aims to provide. That is the right description, alongside routines that do not shift and a layout that feels calm and secure. The external evidence is thin, since the rating comes from February 2020 and the registration only from March 2026. A visit is therefore the main thing to rely on. Ask what dementia training staff receive, how distress and walking are handled, and how care is adjusted as the condition advances.
Residential Care at Clayfield Care Home
South West weekly fees generally run from £1000 to £1300, while Devon council pays about £750 to £900. Residential care means help with everyday living rather than nursing, so personal care, medication, cooked meals and a day with some shape are provided but no registered nurse is on site. Anyone whose health needs regular clinical attention would be looking at a nursing home instead. Clayfield covers an unusually broad set of needs for a residential home, from dementia and mental health to sight and hearing loss. Ask what the fee includes, what is charged separately, and how any gap against the council rate would be met.
Older Person Care at Clayfield Care Home
A good rating sits on this home's record from an inspection in February 2020, but the current registration began only on 16 March 2026, so it may belong to an earlier provider. For older residents the day covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and company in what the home calls a warm and supportive environment. Since the inspection predates the present registration, a family should ask directly what has changed and who now runs the place. Ask how many staff are awake overnight in this Barnstaple home and how quickly a call bell is answered. Ask too who records a resident's own routine and checks it is followed.
Mental Health at Clayfield Care Home
Seven categories appear on Clayfield's registration, mental health support among them, which is broad for a residential home. What usually helps there is stability, routine and being treated with dignity rather than managed. Ask who on the staff has mental health experience, what happens when somebody is in crisis, and how the home works with community mental health services.
Visual and Hearing Impairment at Clayfield Care Home
Visual and hearing impairment support is named directly in this home's own account of what it covers. Practical help means good lighting, clear signage, keeping things in the same place and staff who announce themselves on arrival. Ask what training staff have had, how written information is provided, and how a hearing aid or other equipment is checked.
Physical Disability at Clayfield Care Home
The current registration for this home dates from 16 March 2026, so it is newly held. For a physical disability the practical questions are accessible bathing, space to move, safe transfers and help that leaves a person their independence. Ask what equipment comes with a bedroom, how transfers are staffed, and whether an adapted bathroom can be seen during a visit.
