About Oaklands Residential Care Home
Oaklands is a residential care home in Barnstaple, Devon. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for families who need a planned break. We keep our priorities plain. Good food, warm rooms, laundry that comes back, help when it is wanted and privacy when it is not. Residents get up and go to bed when it suits them rather than when a rota finds it convenient. We take real trouble over knowing people, their working life, their family, which chair is theirs, how they take their tea, because those details are how somebody stays a person here rather than becoming a resident. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they have said. Relatives hold details we would otherwise never know, and we ask for them properly rather than in passing. Respite guests are welcomed rather than simply accommodated. We ask beforehand how the person likes things done, because a fortnight gives us no time to learn it gradually. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Families are welcome to arrive unannounced and see us on an ordinary afternoon, which is the only visit that tells you anything.
