Apple Tree House is a residential care home in Burnham on Sea, Somerset, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, most of them younger adults. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are a small house and everything follows from that. People have their own space and their own routines and a genuine say in how the place is run, from the weekly shop through to what happens at the weekend. The people we support want different things from their week. Some are out most days, at work, at college or with friends, and need us to make that practical and to be there when they come home. Others prefer a steadier, more predictable rhythm and need staff who understand what helps them feel settled. We take real time to learn those patterns, including how someone tells us they are struggling when they cannot put it into words. Support plans are written with the person in language that is theirs. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Heathland House is a residential care home in Ferndown, caring for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own, and supporting people living with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and younger adults. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. We support people living with dementia, where a steady and familiar routine is worth more than anything else we could offer, and where understanding what sits behind distress matters more than simply managing it. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period after illness and for family carers who need a proper break. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we do, the honest answer is that you should come and look at us. See whether people are up and occupied, whether mealtimes are sociable and whether the staff talk about the people here as individuals. That will tell you more than any document.

The Grange Residential Hotel is a care home in Ipplepen, Devon, looking after older people who need support with everyday living. We support residents living with dementia and residents with physical disabilities, and we shape the house and the day around what they need. Calm surroundings, clear routes through the building, unhurried staff and a routine people can rely on do more good than anything else we could provide, though we use equipment and adaptations where they genuinely help. Our aim is that this feels like somewhere people live rather than somewhere they are placed. Residents bring their own furniture and belongings, keep their own habits, see visitors when they like, and have both company and quiet available depending on how the day is going. Meals should be something to look forward to, and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Families are part of life here. We keep relatives informed, welcome them at any reasonable hour, and rely on what they can tell us about the person, which is usually far more useful than any form. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us. Look round, talk to residents and their families, and ask us anything you like.

Paradise House Painswick is a residential care home in Painswick, Gloucestershire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We think of this as a household rather than a service. People choose how they spend their time, join in with cooking, shopping and looking after the house if they want to, and arrange their own rooms. Support is agreed with each person, written in a way they can understand and check, and reviewed with them rather than decided on their behalf. Most of what makes support work is attention to detail. We learn how each person communicates, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and what helps when a day starts going wrong. For autistic residents in particular we take care over predictability, quiet space and clear information about what is happening next, which prevents far more difficulty than it ever costs in planning. Moving in should not mean giving up the rest of your life. Residents keep in touch with family and friends, go out, attend college, work or activities, and pick up new interests when they want to. Where something looks hard to arrange, we start by asking how to make it work. We also provide respite stays so that families can take a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

Beaufort View is a residential care home in Bournemouth supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, most of them younger adults. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are a small house and everything follows from that. People have their own space and their own routines and a genuine say in how the place is run. What we are trying to achieve is not a smoothly run home for its own sake. It is that the people living here get on with the things they actually want to do, whether that is a job, a college course, seeing friends or going out without somebody alongside them. That means knowing people properly, including how somebody communicates when they are anxious and what their sensory needs are. Where someone has a physical disability, a great deal of the quality of our care lies in the detail of how help is given rather than in whether it is given at all. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Lawrence House is a residential care home in Barnstaple, in north Devon. We are a place where people live rather than a place where people are treated, and that distinction shapes most of what we do. We support older adults and younger adults, including people with a learning disability and autistic people. Residential care here means help with the practical parts of the day, washing, dressing, meals, medication and appointments, given in a way that leaves as much as possible in the hands of the person themselves. Where somebody can do a thing slowly, we would rather wait than do it for them. We also welcome people for respite stays. That might be to cover a family carer's holiday, to help somebody regain their feet after a spell in hospital, or simply to let a household try the idea before committing to it. Respite guests take part in everything a permanent resident does. Barnstaple matters to how we run. People keep seeing their own GP and dentist where they can, keep up with the people they have always known, and go out into the town rather than waiting for the town to come to them. Families visit when it suits them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to look round and see the place for yourself, you are welcome to arrange a visit.

We are Hannacott, a residential care home in Gloucester in Gloucestershire. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and younger adults who need a settled home with the right help around them. We also offer respite stays, which give families a planned break and give the person staying with us a change of scene. This is somebody's home, so it should feel like one. People here have their own rooms arranged the way they want them, choose what they do with their day, and have a genuine say in how the house runs, from what is on the shopping list to where we go at the weekend. We ask rather than assume, and we are prepared to be told no. Much of our work is about building skills rather than doing things for people. Cooking a meal, handling money, using the bus, making an appointment. Progress can be slow and it can go backwards, and our job is to keep offering the opportunity without pressure and to make a real occasion of it when something clicks. Understanding how each person communicates is essential, particularly where words are not the main way somebody expresses themselves. We learn what different behaviour is telling us, we record it so everyone responds consistently, and we adapt. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we continue to look for what we could do better.

We are Notts Hill House, a residential care home in Torquay in Torbay. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, and we also offer respite stays. We want to be straightforward with you about where we stand. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us as requires improvement. We are not going to talk our way around that. We have taken the findings seriously, we have an improvement plan we are working through, and we would rather tell you about it honestly than have you discover it elsewhere. If you visit, ask us directly what has changed and what we are still working on, and we will tell you. What has not changed is the way we try to treat people. This is their home. They choose how their room looks, when they get up, what they do with their day and who comes to see them. We support people to do things for themselves wherever they can, and to stay in touch with family, friends and interests outside the house. Torquay gives us the seafront, shops and plenty of reasons to get out, and we make good use of all of it. Improvement in a care home comes from listening properly to residents and relatives, and from acting on what we hear rather than recording it. That is where our attention is at the moment, and we welcome anyone who wants to hold us to it.

Alpine Villa Care Home is a residential home in Melksham, Wiltshire. We look after older people who need support with daily living, and we also welcome younger adults for whom managing alone at home is no longer realistic. Dementia care is a large part of what we do. We keep the house calm and familiar, give people time rather than moving them along, and make sure staff know each resident's history and habits. That knowledge shapes everything from how you greet somebody first thing to how you help when they are unsettled later in the day. We want this to feel like somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been placed. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, choose how they spend their time and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who would rather step away. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether for a planned family break or for support while somebody regains strength after illness. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and what they can tell us about the person is worth more than any assessment form. Bradbury House is a residential care home in Bristol. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. We run this as a shared house rather than a service. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is settled by the people who will eat it. Where we go at the weekend is decided by whoever is going. We ask instead of assuming, and being told no is a perfectly good outcome. Much of the work is about widening what is possible rather than occupying the day. Cooking something you actually want. Getting confident with money. Managing a bus journey alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Some of that happens quickly, some takes years and some never quite comes off, and none of those is a failure so long as the chance was genuinely there and nobody was pushed into it. Supporting mental health here is mostly about not wobbling. We keep to what we have agreed, we notice when somebody is not themselves, and we make it easy to talk without a formal arrangement. Where community teams are involved we work with them properly. Bristol gives people plenty of reason to get out, and we support that as far as anybody wants to take it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking what needs improving.

Here at The Paddocks in Melksham, Wiltshire, we provide residential care for a range of people, including older adults, younger adults, and those living with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a time in hospital or to give family carers a much needed break. We are proud to have received a rating of "good" from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our team puts in every day to make sure the people living here feel safe, valued and at home. What matters most to us is that each person who comes through our doors is treated as an individual. We take time to understand what someone enjoys, what their routines look like, and how they like to spend their days. Care here is shaped around the person, not the other way round. Melksham is a welcoming market town and our location means residents can stay connected to the local community, which we think is really important for wellbeing. Whether someone is with us long term or just for a short stay, we want their time at The Paddocks to feel comfortable and familiar. Our team includes people who have worked in care for many years alongside those who are newer to the profession, and we think that mix works well. Everyone who works here understands that the little things matter just as much as the bigger picture, a friendly face in the morning, a cup of tea made just right, someone who actually listens. If you are looking for care for yourself or someone you love, we would always encourage you to come and visit us so you can see for yourself what life at The Paddocks is like.

Butterfly House is a nursing and residential setting in Weston super Mare in North Somerset. We care for older people and younger adults, including people who need nursing support, people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions. Respite stays are available as well. Being able to offer both residential and nursing care under one roof matters more than it sounds. It means somebody whose health changes does not automatically have to move, and that a person can stay among people and surroundings they know at exactly the point that continuity counts for most. Families tell us this is often the thing that mattered to them in the end. We plan care person by person, because the people living here do not share one set of needs. What settles somebody with dementia is not what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition. So we spend our time on the particulars: how somebody likes to be addressed, what they can still do and would rather do themselves, what tends to make a difficult day and what heads it off. The day belongs to the people living it. When you get up, what you wear, what you eat, who visits and when. We knock, we ask, and we take no for an answer. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. We keep asking residents and relatives where we still fall short.

White Horse is a residential setting at Cambian Lufton Manor College in Yeovil, Somerset, supporting young adults with learning disabilities and autistic young adults, including those with sight or hearing loss. Our purpose is to help people build the skills and confidence for the life they want next. That means practical things such as cooking, budgeting, shopping, travelling and looking after a home, and it also means the less visible work of managing anxiety, making decisions and speaking up for yourself. Support is planned with each person and reviewed with them, and we would rather someone tried something and found it difficult than never be given the chance. For autistic residents we take particular care over predictability, communication and sensory needs. Clear information about what is happening next, quiet space available when it is wanted and a day that runs as expected remove a great deal of unnecessary stress. People here keep their connections outside, with family, friends and the activities they already enjoy, and we work closely with families, social workers and the college so that everything pulls in the same direction. Respite stays are also available, giving families a planned break in a setting their relative already knows. If you would like to know whether we might suit you or the person you support, please get in touch and come and see us.

Dean Grange is a care home at Newnham in Gloucestershire. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, both younger adults and older people, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. This is a house, and it is meant to feel like one. The people living here decide what goes on the shopping list, what gets cooked, how their rooms look and how they spend their time. Some go out to work or to college, some use local groups and facilities, and some prefer a quieter week with a few things they enjoy properly. We do not rank those. Something we pay attention to is what happens as people get older. Needs change with age for everybody, and for somebody with a learning disability those changes are too often missed or put down to the disability itself. Communication takes the most effort. Where speech is not how a person tells us things, we learn the way they do. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us whatever matters to them.

Regency Retirement Home is a residential care home in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, looking after older people who need support with everyday living, including people with physical disabilities. Our aim is a settled, ordinary household. Residents bring their own furniture and belongings, keep their own habits, choose how they spend the day and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually want to eat, and there is company for those who enjoy it and somewhere quiet for those who would rather have their own space. Support is agreed with each resident. We look at what somebody can still manage, what has become difficult and where help genuinely makes a difference, and we take care that assistance does not slide into doing things for people that they would rather do themselves. Independence is easy to erode by accident and hard to give back. HF Trust provides residential care near Launceston for older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. For adults with learning disabilities and autism, the particulars matter enormously. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves are all things we learn from the person rather than assume from a diagnosis. When change cannot be avoided, we prepare for it properly and at their pace. Life here is not meant to stop at the front door. We support people to keep up with family and friends and to get to the groups, activities, work or college that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, and spend time with the people who already live here.

We are proud to have been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our whole team puts in each day to make sure everyone living here feels safe, comfortable and genuinely at home. Care at Grove Lodge is personal. We take time to get to know each resident properly, their history, their preferences, the small things that matter to them, because we believe that good care starts with truly understanding the person in front of you. For those living with dementia, this matters even more. We work hard to create a calm, familiar environment where residents feel secure and where their dignity is always respected. Families are a really important part of life here. We welcome visits and encourage relatives to stay involved in their loved one's care. Moving into a care home is a big step for everyone, and we want the people closest to our residents to feel reassured and kept in the loop at every stage. Dorchester is a wonderful town and we make the most of being part of it. Whether that means getting out and about locally or welcoming the community in, we like to make sure life here feels connected and full rather than contained. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone close to you, please do come and visit us. We are always happy to show people around and have an honest conversation about whether Grove Lodge might be the right fit.

Greenways is a residential care home in Christchurch. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Where a physical disability or sensory loss affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building, and we are careful that help with one task does not quietly become help with everything. Small habits carry a lot of weight: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture exactly where it lives, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way properly, write it down so new staff respond identically, and keep checking we have understood. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

The Manor Exminster is a residential care home near Exeter, Devon, looking after older people who need support with daily living. Dementia care is central to what we do. We keep the house calm and familiar, we give people time rather than moving them along, and we make sure staff know each resident's history and habits. Knowing who somebody has been tells you a great deal about how to help them now, and it is the difference between care that fits the person and care that simply completes the tasks. We also support residents with physical disabilities, adapting how we help so that people keep as much independence as they can manage safely. We want this to feel like somewhere people live. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, choose how they spend their time and see visitors whenever suits them. Meals are planned around what people actually enjoy, and there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who would rather step away. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we keep them properly informed. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and look round at a time that suits you and ask us whatever you need to ask.

Gordena Care Home is a residential home in South Gloucestershire, on the edge of Bristol. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Because the people who live here need quite different things, we are careful to be specific. For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with personal care, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night, and for those living with dementia it means keeping the day recognisable and the same familiar staff around. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, and support to manage money, appointments and getting out to a job or a course. For somebody living with mental ill health it may mean a settled, low pressure place to live and close work with the community mental health team. We try to keep the house feeling like a home. Food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like, there is somewhere sociable and somewhere quiet, and nobody is required to join in. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit and see for yourself.

Quay Court Care Centre is a care home in Kingsbridge in Devon. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Because the people living here have genuinely different needs, we plan care one person at a time. What settles somebody with dementia is not what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition, and one routine stretched across everybody suits nobody in particular. So we spend our attention on the details: how a person likes to be addressed, what they can still do and would rather do themselves, what tends to make a bad day and what heads it off early. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than trying to smooth it over. Relatives often know precisely what helps and we want to be told at the beginning. Kingsbridge is a small enough place that people stay connected to it, and many of those living here have known this part of Devon all their lives, which means the community keeps coming through the door. We encourage that. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and families what needs our attention.

Alpine Lodge is a residential care home in Torquay in Torbay. We support older people and younger adults, including people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for people needing care for a short period. Supporting mental health in a residential setting is largely about steadiness rather than intervention. We keep to arrangements we have made. We notice when somebody seems unlike themselves without turning it into an interrogation. We make it easy to talk without a formal appointment, and we are as reliable on the difficult weeks as on the good ones. Progress is rarely a straight line and our job is not to be surprised by it. This is people's home and we treat it accordingly. Rooms are theirs to arrange. People decide how their days go, who they see, whether they want company or their own space with the door shut. We knock before we come in, we ask rather than assume, and we are quite prepared to be disagreed with. Torquay gives us the sea, the front and plenty of ordinary life close at hand, and we support people to stay part of it, in work, study, groups or friendships. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking the people living here what needs to change.

Fernside is a residential care home in Ferndown in Dorset. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Because the people living here want different things from their week, we plan support one person at a time. What helps an older person feel settled is not what builds confidence in a younger adult with a learning disability, and we would rather do both properly than stretch one routine across everybody. That means paying attention to particulars: how somebody likes to be spoken to, what they can manage themselves and would rather we left alone, what tends to make a difficult day. Where a physical disability affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building, and we are careful that help with one task does not quietly become help with everything. Lavender House and Primrose Lodge are residential care homes in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and adults who are autistic. We work with younger adults and we can offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Support here is planned around individuals rather than around a house routine. We take time to learn how each person communicates, what they enjoy, what unsettles them and how they like things done. The week belongs to the person, whether that means work, a course, volunteering, regular time with family or a settled routine that nobody interferes with. People choose their own food, keep their own belongings and habits, and have a genuine say in how the houses are run. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, whether that is cooking, travelling independently or managing their own money, we support it patiently and expect it to take as long as it takes. When a person becomes distressed, we treat it as information rather than as behaviour to be controlled. There is nearly always a reason, and knowing somebody well is what allows us to find it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to visit or discuss a placement or a respite stay, please get in touch.

We are Church Road, a residential care home in Ferndown, Dorset. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. That is a wide range of needs living under one roof, and it only works if we plan properly. Somebody who wants a sociable, busy day and somebody who needs quiet and an entirely predictable routine can both live well here, provided we pay attention to who needs what and when. So we ask, we observe, and we adapt rather than running everyone to the same timetable. The help itself covers personal care, medication, meals and mobility, and we give proper attention to access and communication where those matter. We are just as concerned with supporting what people can still do themselves. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we have, please come and see the home and ask us detailed questions about staffing, training and how care is planned here. Families and friends are welcome at any reasonable hour.

Here at Bracken Tor House, we offer residential care for a wide range of people in the heart of Okehampton, Devon. Our setting is a place where individuals feel genuinely at home, supported by a team that takes the time to get to know each person properly, understanding not just their care needs but their personality, preferences and history. We support older adults, younger adults, and people living with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions and physical disabilities. Respite care is also available for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements, or whose families need some time to rest. We believe that whatever brings someone to us, they deserve the same level of attentiveness and respect. Dementia care is something we approach with particular thoughtfulness. We know how disorientating and unsettling this condition can be, both for the person living with it and for the people who love them. Our approach focuses on familiarity, calm routine and meaningful activity, helping residents feel secure and recognised as individuals. For those with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs, we work hard to create an environment that feels safe and predictable, while still offering opportunities for engagement, connection and enjoyment. We take the time to understand what matters to each resident and how they communicate, so that care feels personal rather than procedural. We are proud that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as good, which reflects the commitment of everyone who works here. That said, we are always looking at how we can improve and do better for the people in our care. If you are considering Bracken Tor House for yourself or someone close to you, we would warmly welcome the chance to show you around and answer any questions you might have.

Here at Barton Lodge, we are proud to be a care home at the heart of the Dawlish community in beautiful Devon. We offer residential care, dementia care and respite care for older people, providing a warm and homely environment where residents feel genuinely comfortable and well looked after. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that trust lightly. From the moment someone steps through our doors, we aim to make them feel at ease. Whether a resident is joining us for a short respite stay or making Barton Lodge their permanent home, we work hard to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how we can best support their day to day life. Our approach to dementia care is thoughtful and person centred. We recognise that living with dementia affects each person differently, and we tailor our support accordingly, always aiming to preserve dignity, independence and a sense of familiarity. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us as Good, which reflects the genuine commitment of everyone who works here. We are always looking at how we can improve and grow, and we welcome feedback from residents and their families as part of that process. Newport Square is a residential care home in Launceston, Cornwall. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose regular carer needs one. This is a home rather than an institution, and the people who live here run their own lives in it. Everybody has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find hard and what they want to be doing with their time. Being in a small Cornish town has real advantages. People are known in the shops and around the square, they keep up the clubs and activities they like, they see family, and they go out without it being an expedition. We support all of that rather than managing it down to whatever is easiest for us. Communication is where we concentrate. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do tell us things and make sure every member of the team understands. When someone becomes distressed we treat it as communication and look for the cause, and anything that restricts a person's freedom is agreed properly, recorded and reviewed with a view to reducing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit.

Cardell House is a residential home in Bristol for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We offer planned respite stays as well as longer placements. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. The people who live here choose how their rooms look, have a real say in meals and the shape of the week, and are supported to keep up the relationships and interests that matter to them. The ordinary business of having preferences and making choices should not quietly disappear because somebody lives in a supported setting, and a good deal of our work is simply making sure it does not. Support is planned around each person. For some that means a full and busy week out in Bristol, with work, college, clubs and family time. For others it means a quieter and highly predictable rhythm, which is an equally good way to live. With autistic people in particular we pay close attention to routine, to warning of change and to the sensory side of the environment, because those details tend to decide whether a day goes well. Respite stays are planned with the same care as any other placement, and give families a genuine break in the knowledge that their relative is somewhere calm and properly staffed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Cardell House for someone, please get in touch and come and look round.

Starbrook is a small residential care home in Westbury, Wiltshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults taking their first steps away from the family home. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Being small is deliberate. It means the people who live here know each other and know the staff team properly, and it means we can build the day around individuals rather than around a timetable. Rooms are personal and people are encouraged to fill them with their own things. The kitchen is somewhere people cook rather than somewhere care happens, and the weekly shop, the washing and the garden are shared jobs that belong to everyone. We take communication seriously. Where someone uses signs, symbols, an app or their own particular way of letting us know, we learn it, and we record it clearly so nobody has to start from scratch. Where someone finds change difficult we prepare for it in advance, and we are careful not to fill a life with unnecessary appointments and disruption. Respite stays are available too, and they often work well as a gentle introduction for someone who may move in later. We keep families and social workers closely involved, and we will always tell you honestly what we think, including when we think something is not working. You are welcome to visit and meet us before making any decisions. Please get in touch and we will arrange a time.

Here at St Anne's in Saltash, we offer residential care for older people in the heart of Cornwall, and we take real pride in the community we have built together with our residents, their families and our team. We support people living with dementia, those who need longer term residential care, and those who come to us for a short respite stay. Whatever brings someone through our doors, we work hard to make sure they feel at home from the very first day. That means listening carefully, taking time to understand what matters to each person, and making sure their routines, preferences and personalities shape the way we care for them. We are proud to have been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. That rating means a great deal to us, not because of what it says on paper, but because it reflects the effort our team puts in every single day to get things right for the people we care for. We do not take that for granted, and we work hard to maintain those standards. Saltash is a wonderful place to call home, and our location in Cornwall gives us a strong sense of local identity. Many of our residents have lived in and around this area for much of their lives, and we think it matters that people can be cared for close to the people and places they know. If you are thinking about care for yourself or someone you love, we would always encourage you to come and see us in person. A visit tells you far more than any description can. We are happy to answer questions, show you around, and talk through what life here actually looks like. Please do get in touch.

- Care Home
Wortley Villa is a residential care home in Nailsworth in Gloucestershire. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. Being a small house is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and the week can genuinely be arranged around the actual preferences of the people living here rather than around a compromise that suits nobody. Rooms belong to the people in them. The shopping is decided by the people who will eat it. Where anybody goes at the weekend is their own decision. A great deal of what we do builds skills rather than doing things for people. Cooking, handling money, travelling into town, making an appointment, keeping in touch with family. Progress can be slow and it can go backwards, and our part is to keep the opportunity open without pressure and to make something of it when it works. Understanding how each person communicates matters more than almost anything else here, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way, write it down so that new staff respond identically, and keep checking we have understood rather than assuming. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.

- Care Home
Our home on Bath Road in Swindon provides residential care for adults living with mental health conditions. What we offer first is stability. Most of the people who come to live here have had a long stretch in which very little has been settled, and a predictable place with familiar staff and a routine that does not change without warning does more good in the early months than anything else. Everybody has their own room and their own way of going about the day. Staff are here at every hour to help with practical matters, to prompt and support with medication and to talk when that is what is needed. We work closely with the mental health professionals involved in each person's care so that the approach stays consistent rather than shifting from one month to the next. Much of what we do is deliberately ordinary, because ordinary things are what rebuild confidence. Cooking, shopping, looking after your own room, managing money, keeping appointments and getting out into Swindon are all things we do alongside people rather than for them. Progress is uneven and a bad week is not a failure. Respite stays can be arranged where appropriate. If you are looking for a placement, please contact us and come and see us.

We are Woodside, a residential care home in Bournemouth. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. The people we support often have needs that overlap in ways the usual categories miss. Somebody may have a learning disability, a physical disability and difficulty with what they can see or hear all at once, and support built around only one of those will not hold up. So we plan around the person and take time to find out what genuinely helps on a good day and on a hard one. Communication is where we start. We find out how somebody makes themselves understood, we use that method consistently, and we check that we have actually been understood rather than assuming it. Predictability does most of the rest of the work, along with familiar staff and a routine that we protect rather than ask people to be flexible about. Choice runs through the day as far as it can, with help offered rather than imposed, and families and advocates are involved as much as the person wants.

We are a residential care home in Blandford Forum, Dorset, supporting older people and younger adults who need help with daily life, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite stays, either planned in advance so a family carer can have a break or arranged more quickly when somebody needs care for a period. Moving into a care home is a considerable change and we do not treat it lightly. The first weeks matter, so we spend them learning how somebody has always done things. When they like to wake and go to bed, what they will eat and what they will not touch, whether they want company or their own space, what they used to do for work or for pleasure. Care that ignores all that may be safe enough, but it will not feel like living anywhere. For people living with dementia the steadiness of the day does much of the work. Familiar faces, an unhurried pace and staff who can read what somebody is telling them when the words are hard to find. Supporting younger adults alongside older residents takes thought, and we plan carefully so that everybody here has what they need rather than a compromise. Families are welcome and we would much rather you came and saw the place for yourself. Please contact us and we will arrange a visit at a time that suits your family.

Here at Castleman House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Blandford Forum, Dorset. We are a care home that genuinely feels like a home, and that matters deeply to everyone who lives and works here. We support people with a wide range of needs, including dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is to recover after a period of illness or to give a family carer some time to rest. Whatever brings someone to us, we take the time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how they like their days to look. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which reflects the effort our whole team puts into making sure people are safe, well supported, and treated with respect. We are proud of that rating, but we never see it as a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can do things better for the people in our care. 4 Box Crescent is a residential care home in Stroud, supporting adults and younger adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic. We are a small household, and being small is the point, because the support we offer depends on knowing people thoroughly. Everyone who lives here has a support plan written with them and in a form they can genuinely use. We take time to understand how each person communicates, including through routine, mood and behaviour, and we adjust what we do rather than expecting people to fit around us. Predictable days, careful attention to sensory needs and staff who do not constantly change are usually what make the difference between a settled week and a hard one. Life here is meant to look like anyone else's. People take part in the shopping and cooking, share the chores, decide what happens at the weekend, see family and friends, and get out into Stroud and the valleys around it. Where someone wants to learn to do more for themselves, we support the practice rather than taking the task over. We also offer respite stays, giving families a planned break and the person a stay somewhere they know. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

The Chantry is a residential care home in Crediton in Devon. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Much of what we do is about widening what is possible rather than occupying the day. Cooking something you actually want to eat. Getting confident with money. Managing a journey into town alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Progress can be slow and can go backwards, and our part is to keep the chance open without pressure and to make something of it when it works. Understanding how each person communicates is the other half of the job, particularly where speech is not the main route. Alexandra House is a residential care home in Poole. We provide care for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We are a residential home rather than a clinical setting, and the day here belongs to the people living in it. Some like an early start and a bit of company; others prefer a slow morning and a quiet afternoon. Our part is to make either possible, and to help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and getting about in a way that supports independence rather than replacing it. Dementia care is central to our work. We take time to learn each person's history, habits and the things that reassure them, because that knowledge is what lets staff respond to the feeling behind a difficult moment rather than simply react to the behaviour. Where a resident has a physical disability we make sure equipment is properly set up and that staff use it confidently, and where there is a sight or hearing impairment we adapt how we communicate and keep things where the person expects to find them. Respite stays get the same planning as any other admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we treat as a foundation rather than a finishing line. You are very welcome to visit Alexandra House and see the home on an ordinary day.

Primley House is a residential care home in Paignton, providing care for older people. We also welcome guests for respite stays, whether to give a family carer a break or to help somebody get their confidence back after a spell in hospital. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, so life here is domestic in scale. People choose when to get up, where to spend the day and what they eat, and help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility is given when it is wanted, discreetly and without taking over. What makes a home work is a team that stays. When carers know somebody properly, they notice quickly when things change, they know what lifts a low mood, and families are not forever repeating themselves to new faces. Being by the sea suits our residents. Many have known this coast for years, and getting out for a walk or a cup of tea somewhere is part of ordinary life rather than an organised outing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Apperley House is a residential home in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, for adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults. We offer planned respite stays alongside longer placements. This is somebody's home before it is anything else. The people who live here choose how their rooms look, have a real say in meals and in the shape of the week, and are supported to keep up the relationships and interests that matter to them. The ordinary business of having preferences and making choices should not quietly disappear because somebody lives in a supported setting. Support is planned around each person. For some that means a full and busy week out in the local area, with work, college, clubs and family time. For others it means a quieter and highly predictable rhythm, which is an equally good way to live. With autistic people in particular we pay close attention to routine, to warning of change and to the sensory side of the environment. Where somebody has a physical disability we make sure equipment is properly set up and that staff use it confidently, and we follow the person's own preferences about how they are helped to move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering Apperley House for someone, please get in touch and come and look round properly.

Milford Manor Care Home is a residential care home in Salisbury, Wiltshire. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, as well as people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays. Moving into a home usually follows a difficult period, so we take the settling in slowly. We ask about the routines somebody has kept for years, the food they actually like and whether they would rather be up early or have a lie in, and we build around that rather than expecting people to adapt to us. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and we knock before we come in. Days here are not heavily timetabled. Company, conversation and a walk in the garden for those who want it, the newspaper and quiet for those who do not. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work, so we keep staffing settled and learn each person's history properly. Where somebody has limited sight or hearing, we make sure the way we approach and speak to them takes account of it. Health needs are managed with local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early when anything changes. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. We are Ridgecourt Residential Care Home in Totnes, Devon. We provide a home for older people, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. Anything beyond our registration we arrange with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover it ourselves. Dementia takes up much of our day, and what helps most is knowing the person. Someone who spent forty years in a particular trade or raising a family nearby still carries that with them, and a conversation that connects with it can change an afternoon completely. When a resident is distressed there is nearly always a cause, and it is more often practical than people expect. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most: enough time that nothing is rushed, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer things done. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Stinchcombe Manor in Dursley provides residential care to older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, residents managing mental health conditions and residents with a physical disability. With that range of needs we plan around the individual rather than the group. When someone moves in we ask a great many questions, about routines and preferences, about what helps on a difficult day, and about who should be involved in decisions. Those answers go into a plan that staff genuinely work to, and we revisit it as circumstances change. Day to day we keep the home comfortable and unhurried. People get up when they are ready, meals are cooked here and adapted to individual tastes, and help with personal care is given calmly and with dignity. We want to be honest about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly and answer your questions about it, and improving it is the focus of our work at present. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods. Relatives are welcome here, and we would far rather be told about a concern straight away than discover it later.

Here at Pinehurst Care Home, we are proud to be part of the Ilfracombe community, offering a warm and homely environment where older people can feel safe, comfortable and genuinely at ease. Nestled in the heart of Devon, our setting benefits from the charm and calm of the North Devon coast, and we believe that where you live matters just as much as how you are cared for. We support older people across a range of needs, including residential care, dementia care and respite care. Whether someone is joining us for a short stay to recover or rest, or making Pinehurst their longer term home, we work to understand each person as an individual. We take time to learn what matters to people, what their routines look like, what brings them comfort, and what makes them smile. For those living with dementia, we know how important familiarity and consistency are. Our approach is thoughtful and unhurried, and we work closely with families to ensure that the support we provide reflects each person's history, preferences and personality. Respite care is something we take seriously too. Caring for a loved one at home is not always straightforward, and sometimes families simply need time to rest and recharge. We welcome short stay residents with the same care and attention as anyone else who lives with us. Our most recent Care Quality Commission rating is good, which reflects the effort and commitment of everyone who works here. We are always looking at how we can improve and grow, and we welcome feedback from residents and families as part of that. Arranging and funding a care home place in the South West
The South West covers a broad stretch of England, from the coastal communities of Cornwall and Devon through Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Across this region our directory lists 1,362 residential care homes, ranging from small family-run houses to larger purpose-built settings. If you are beginning to think about a move into residential care, the first practical steps are usually the same wherever you live: understand the level of support needed, find out what funding may be available, and get a realistic sense of local fees before you shortlist homes.
Starting with a care needs assessment
A care needs assessment is the formal way to establish what daily help someone requires, and it is the gateway to any publicly funded support. You can request one through the local authority Adult Social Care team, and the assessment is free regardless of income. A social worker or assessor will look at personal care, mobility, medication, memory, nutrition and social contact, then produce a written summary of eligible needs. This document is useful even for people who expect to pay privately, because it gives care homes a clear starting point when discussing whether they can meet the person's needs.
Funding, means testing and typical costs
After the needs assessment, a separate financial assessment decides how much the local authority will contribute. Savings and capital thresholds apply, and the value of a property is usually included unless a spouse or certain other relatives still live there. Residential fees in the South West vary widely by area and by the type of home, with coastal towns and larger converted properties often sitting at the higher end. It is worth asking each shortlisted home for a written fee schedule that shows what is included and what is charged as an extra, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted trips.
Choosing between care homes in the South West
With more than 1,300 residential settings in the region, filtering the list is the real challenge. Every home in our directory carries a Care Quality Commission status, and across the South West the current sample includes Outstanding ratings such as Firgrove House, Ridgeway House and Harbour Rise Rest Home, a large majority rated Good, a smaller number rated Requires Improvement including Grange Court, Holly Tree Cottage, Chosen Court and Nutley Lodge Care Home, and a handful not yet rated such as Osborne House and St Omer Residential Care Ltd.
Reading CQC reports properly
The overall rating is a useful headline, but the five key questions underneath it tell you far more. Look at whether the home is Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led, and pay particular attention to the date of the last inspection. A home rated Requires Improvement that has since had a positive follow-up visit may be a very different proposition to one where concerns are unresolved. Homes that are not yet rated are often newer registrations, so ask the manager directly about staffing, training and clinical oversight.
What a visit should tell you
Try to visit at different times of day. Look at how staff greet residents by name, whether call bells are answered promptly, and whether communal areas feel lived in rather than staged. Ask to see a sample care plan, the activities programme for the last month, and the most recent menu. Homes such as Cathedral View, Menna House, Courtlands Care Home, Chard Manor and OSJCT Marden Court are examples from our South West listings, but the right choice depends on location, atmosphere and the specific needs of your relative rather than name recognition.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in the South West
How many care homes are there in the South West?
The South West has 1,362 CQC registered care homes: 62 Outstanding, 1,091 Good, 140 Requires improvement, 7 Inadequate, 62 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
How much does a care home cost in the South West?
Self-funders are typically asked £1,400 to £1,650 a week. Middle half of prices from 52 South West homes. Median £1,549. Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price.
Which care homes in the South West were inspected most recently?
The Yelverton Residential Home (30 September 2026), Ladden View (29 September 2026) and Southlands Residential Care Home (28 September 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can the local authority fund a care home placement in the South West?
Yes, the local authority can fund all or part of a residential placement following a needs assessment and a financial assessment. If someone has capital below the upper threshold and eligible needs, the local authority will contribute towards fees, though the person is still expected to pay an assessed contribution from income such as pensions. Where savings and property equity are above the threshold, the person usually pays their own fees until their capital falls to the relevant level. It is worth asking about deferred payment agreements if the main asset is a home that cannot easily be sold.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the South West?
You can contact the local authority Adult Social Care service directly and request an assessment for yourself or a relative, and referrals can also come through a GP or hospital discharge team. The assessment is free and does not depend on income. An assessor will visit in person or speak by phone and video, and will consider practical daily tasks alongside safety, mental wellbeing and social contact. You will receive a written outcome that can be shared with any care home you approach.
How far in advance should I start looking for a care home in the South West?
Where possible, begin exploring options several months before a move is likely, because the most sought-after homes in the South West often have waiting lists. Starting early also allows time for a proper needs assessment, financial planning and unhurried visits. In urgent situations, for example after a hospital admission, decisions sometimes have to be made within days, and the local authority hospital team can help identify homes with immediate vacancies. Even in a crisis, try to visit at least two homes before committing.
Which providers in the South West offer residential care?
Our directory currently lists 1,362 residential care homes across the South West, spanning Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol. These include small homes such as Breage House, Inglenook House and Katherine House Rest Home, alongside larger settings such as Regency Manor Care Home and Lakeside Care Home. CQC ratings across the sample include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and not yet rated. You can filter the full list on Care Assura by location, rating and specialism to narrow the choice.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in the South West?
Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio at different times of day, how care plans are reviewed, and what happens if a resident's needs increase. Enquire about the activities on offer, access to gardens or outings, and how the home manages relationships with GPs, district nurses and pharmacists. Check the fee structure carefully and confirm what is included, what counts as an extra, and how future increases are handled. Finally, ask to speak to a relative of a current resident if that is possible.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides help with personal care such as washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, along with companionship and activities, but does not have qualified nurses on duty around the clock. A nursing home is registered to provide nursing care, meaning a registered nurse is on shift day and night to manage more complex clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or advanced dementia. All 1,333 homes on this South West page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is often better to choose a home already registered to provide it.
