Can Cambridgeshire County Council pay for a care home place?

It can, where the care needs assessment shows residential care is needed and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the fees in full. Income, savings and usually property are counted against national thresholds, and most people who qualify still contribute from their income. The council will have a view on what it pays, so a family choosing a more expensive home may be asked for a third party contribution. Anyone funding privately keeps the right to an assessment and to advice about the options.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Cambridgeshire?

Ask Cambridgeshire County Council adult social care for a care needs assessment, either for yourself or for a relative who agrees to it. A general practice or a hospital discharge team can also make the referral, which is common when someone is already an inpatient. Ask any home you are serious about what the weekly fee covers and what is billed separately, such as hairdressing, chiropody or transport to appointments. Ask as well how often fees are reviewed and what notice is given of an increase, since that question is rarely asked and always relevant.

Making sense of the ratings

Of the eighty eight homes listed, six are rated Outstanding and seventy one are rated Good, four are rated Requires Improvement and seven carry no rating yet. Check the date of the inspection alongside the judgement, because a rating given some years ago describes a home that may have changed hands or changed manager since. Where a home is rated Requires Improvement, the report will name what fell short, and a manager who talks openly about what has changed since is telling you something useful.

What a visit should tell you

Go at a time when the home is busy rather than at its quietest, and if you can, go twice. Notice whether residents are occupied and whether staff speak to them by name rather than about them. Ask how many permanent staff are on at night, how much agency cover is used across a typical week and how long the manager has been in post. Ask too what happens if needs increase and nursing becomes necessary, since a home registered for residential care alone cannot provide it. Distance matters more than families expect, because the home within easy reach is the one you will visit often, and regular visits do more for someone settling in than almost anything else.
