Care Homes in Cambridgeshire 90 care homes · 79 rated Good by CQC

Looking for care homes in Cambridgeshire normally means moving between several different websites, and this page removes that step by setting out what is registered across the county in a single list. Seventy one of the homes here hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and six are rated Outstanding, while four are rated Requires Improvement and seven have not yet been rated. 90 homes appear in total, each of them registered to provide accommodation with personal care. Cambridgeshire County Council is the authority responsible for the care needs assessment that establishes whether residential care is the right answer, and for the financial assessment that sits behind any place it helps to fund. Before you telephone anywhere, open the profiles of the homes that interest you and read their inspection reports properly, then turn what you have read into the questions you ask when you go to look round.

Here at Conquest Lodge, we are proud to call March, Cambridgeshire our home, and we work hard every day to make sure it truly feels like home for the people who live with us too. We offer residential care for older people, as well as support for younger adults, people living with a learning disability or autism, those experiencing mental health difficulties, and individuals with a physical disability. We also provide respite care for those who need a short break or temporary support. Our team takes the time to get to know each person as an individual, understanding what matters to them, how they like their days to look, and what makes them feel comfortable and settled. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and that means a great deal to us. It reflects the genuine effort our team puts into the care and support we provide, and it gives families the reassurance they deserve when making what is often a very important decision. We believe that good care is built on honest relationships, consistency, and real respect for the people in our charge. Whether someone is joining us for a longer stay or a shorter period of respite, we want them to feel safe, heard, and valued from the very first day. We also know how much it matters to families and loved ones to feel kept in the loop and welcome when they visit. We actively encourage involvement and try to maintain open, straightforward communication with everyone connected to the people we support. If you would like to find out more about life at Conquest Lodge or arrange a visit, please do get in touch. We are always happy to have a conversation and show you around.

    • Care Home

Hatley Court is a residential care home in Cambridge. We support older people, including those living with dementia, adults with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run the home around the people in it rather than around a timetable. Residents decide when to get up, what to eat and how to spend the day. Some are out and about or busy with visitors. Others prefer their own room and quiet. Neither needs justifying. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details that make independence possible. Equipment that is right for the person, a layout that stays predictable, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. Being over helped is a real loss, and we try to avoid it. Dementia care here depends on familiar faces, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often tell us the small details, and those are usually the ones that matter when somebody is unsettled. Cambridge gives us plenty of reasons to get out, and trips are a normal part of the week rather than an occasion. Respite stays are available for planned breaks and at shorter notice. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone thinking about Hatley Court is welcome to visit, talk to residents and ask us the difficult questions.

    • Care Home

Henbrook House is a residential care home in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody has, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and visitors do not need an appointment. We are registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

    • Care Home

1 High Street is a small residential care home in Cambridge. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. Being a small house is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and the week can genuinely be arranged around the actual preferences of the people living here rather than around a compromise that suits nobody. Rooms belong to the people in them. The shopping is decided by the people who will eat it. Where anybody goes at the weekend is their own decision. A great deal of what we do builds skills rather than doing things for people. Cooking, handling money, travelling into town, making an appointment, keeping in touch with family. Progress can be slow and it can go backwards, and our part is to keep the opportunity open without pressure and to make something of it when it works. Understanding how each person communicates matters more than almost anything else here, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way, write it down so that new staff respond identically, and keep checking we have understood rather than assuming. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

    • Care Home

The Brambles is a residential care home in Ely, Cambridgeshire, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a genuine break while the person staying with us has company and a change of surroundings. This is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we try hard to run it that way. People have their own rooms, their own routines and a real say in how their days go. Support here is about making ordinary things possible rather than doing them for people. Cooking a meal you actually want. Doing your own shopping. Managing money and appointments. Getting to a club, a course or a job. Keeping in touch with family and friends. We pay attention to that distinction, because independence is quietly worn away by help that arrives too quickly. Communication matters a great deal to us. Not everybody here uses many words, and understanding somebody properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected rather than assumptions. Plans are written with the person, reviewed honestly and changed when they stop fitting. We also work alongside families and with social work and health colleagues so that support is joined up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining our practice around choice and independence, where any provider can drift without noticing. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Holly Cottage near Ely is a residential care home supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We keep the house small and domestic on purpose. People live here rather than being placed here, and that shows in the ordinary run of the day. Everybody has their own room and their own belongings, and the shape of the week is set by the people who live in it. Support is agreed with each person and with those who know them best. For some it means help with every part of personal care, and for others it is prompting, encouragement and staff nearby while they manage things themselves. We take communication seriously, learning how each person makes themselves understood and what their behaviour is telling us, and we write down what we learn so that everybody responds in the same way. People are supported to get out locally, to keep up activities and interests, to attend appointments and to see family and friends. Respite stays can be arranged where appropriate. If you are looking for a placement for somebody, please contact us. We will assess carefully and tell you honestly if we are not the right service for them.

    • Care Home

Fair Haven Care Home is a residential home in Ely for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a break, to help somebody build strength back up after illness or to let a person see what living here is like before a longer decision. You are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Laburnum Lodge is a residential care home in Ely, Cambridgeshire. We are home to older people and to younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. The care we give is residential rather than nursing. Staff are here day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals and to keep the household running, while local doctors and district nurses look after clinical needs. For most people that combination works well and leaves their independence largely intact. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A day that runs in a familiar order, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to make sense of will settle somebody more reliably than any activity programme. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what helps us understand them when words become difficult. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw. Ely is a pleasant place to live and we help people get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Maycroft is a residential care home in Royston, Cambridgeshire. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and we offer respite stays. Good care here looks like nothing much from outside. It is meals people finish, laundry that comes back with the right name in it, and staff who know which residents dislike being rushed. We take the trouble to get communication right for each person, including how we announce ourselves. It is the thing most often left partly done. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what somebody can still manage themselves rather than what is quickest for us. For those living with dementia we protect routine and ask families for the history that makes a person make sense to us. We do not use agency staff more than we must, and when we do we make sure they are introduced properly rather than sent in cold. Couples and close friendships are supported rather than managed. People's relationships do not stop mattering when they move into a care home. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome unannounced.

Oakleigh Residential Care Home provides residential care in Huntingdon for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. Most of what makes a care home a decent place to live is ordinary and daily. Getting up at an hour of your own choosing, food you actually want to eat, staff who know your name and your habits, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is where our effort goes. For residents living with dementia, familiarity and an unhurried approach prevent far more distress than they cost, so we keep the shape of the day recognisable and let people work at their own pace. We ought to be straightforward about our inspection position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to dress that up as a misunderstanding. It described real shortfalls, and our manager and staff have been working through the findings, with tighter medicines practice, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that gaps are found by us rather than by an inspector. That work is not finished and we will not claim otherwise. If you are considering Oakleigh for somebody you love, please come and look round, ask exactly what has changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here.

Nelson Lodge is a residential care home in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, for older people who need care, company and a settled place to live. We would like the people here to feel that this is their home and not somewhere they have been placed. We provide residential care, which covers help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, with community health professionals brought in when something clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted rather than once. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a genuine rest and letting a prospective resident spend time here before anything permanent is decided. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. That is a standard we mean to hold rather than a badge to point at, and we are more interested in what families tell us week by week than in anything we could write about ourselves. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we take that responsibility seriously. For those with physical disabilities or sensory impairments, we work to ensure the environment and the support we provide genuinely reflect their needs. Respite stays are given just as much thought and care as longer term placements. We want anyone who comes to us, even for a short time, to feel properly settled and looked after. Our home on Churchfield Avenue in Cambridge is a small residential setting where adults with a learning disability and autistic adults live with the support they need to run their own lives. It is a house in a residential street, and people here are neighbours rather than residents of an institution. We support younger adults and adults of working age. Everything starts with understanding how someone communicates, what helps them feel settled and what they want their week to hold. From there we help with personal care, health appointments, medication, cooking, shopping and managing money, and we support people to use Cambridge properly, whether that means college, work, a regular club, a place of worship or simply a favourite route into town. Where someone wants to do something that carries a bit of risk, our job is to work out how to make it safe enough rather than to say no by default. Adults are entitled to make their own choices, including the occasional poor one. We also offer respite stays for people who live with family, giving everyone a planned break somewhere that becomes familiar quickly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a placement, please come and see the house and meet the people who live here.

We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the effort and commitment our whole team brings to the care we offer every day. We understand that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. That is why we take the time to get to know each person who comes to live with us or stays for a short respite break. We want to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how we can support them to live well and comfortably. Whether someone is recovering after a hospital stay or giving a family carer a much needed break, we treat every short stay with the same level of attention and warmth as any long term placement. We are rooted in the local community of St Neots and we value the relationships we have built with residents, families and those who support us from the wider area. If you would like to find out more or come for a visit, we would be very glad to hear from you.

    • Care Home

The Chase Care Home is a residential home in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, looking after older people who need support with day to day living. Much of our work is with residents living with dementia. We have shaped the house and the routine around that, with calm surroundings, clear ways of finding your way about, staff who know each person's history, and time given rather than grudged. We also support people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, adjusting how we help and how we communicate so that nobody is left out of what is going on around them. We think a care home should feel like a home. Residents keep their own belongings, their own routines and their own visitors. Meals are something to look forward to rather than something to get through, and there is always the option of a quiet corner for anyone who would rather not be in the thick of things. Families are part of this. We keep relatives informed, we welcome them at any reasonable hour, and we ask for their knowledge of the person, because it usually tells us more than any assessment form. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and see us. Look around, meet the team and ask whatever you need to ask.

Set within the familiar surroundings of the CB postcode area, our home offers residents the comfort of a peaceful setting whilst remaining close to the vibrant culture, green spaces, and rich heritage that make Cambridge such a treasured place to call home. Families visiting loved ones can enjoy the convenience of local amenities nearby, making regular visits easy and unhurried. Our care approach is thoughtfully tailored to meet a broad spectrum of needs. Alongside residential and nursing care for older people, we provide specialist dementia care delivered with patience, understanding, and dignity. We also support adults living with mental health conditions, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments, as well as welcoming younger adults who benefit from a personalised approach to daily living. For families needing a short term solution, our respite care offers peace of mind, whether it is planned in advance or required at short notice following illness, hospital discharge, or to give family carers a well earned break. In practice, this means every resident is seen as an individual with their own life story, preferences, and aspirations. Our team takes time to get to know each person, building trusting relationships that help residents feel truly at home. Whether someone needs gentle encouragement with everyday routines, complex nursing input, or specialist dementia support, we adapt our approach so that care always feels personal rather than clinical. Families are welcomed as partners in care, kept informed, and included in decisions about their loved one's wellbeing. We are proud to hold an overall rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, following our most recent inspection. We are particularly honoured to have been recognised as Outstanding in the Caring domain, a reflection of the genuine warmth, kindness, and respect our team shows residents every single day. Achieving Good ratings across Safe, Effective, Responsive, and Well-led further demonstrates our commitment to delivering care that families can rely on with confidence. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions involved. If you are exploring options for a loved one in Cambridge or the surrounding area, we warmly invite you to get in touch to learn more about life at Langdon House. Our door is always open, and we would be delighted to answer your questions and help you feel reassured that your loved one will be cared for with compassion, dignity, and respect.

    • Care Home

Saxon Manor Care Home is a residential care home in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, as well as younger adults. We also offer respite stays. Moving into a home usually follows a difficult period, so we take the settling in slowly. We ask about the routines somebody has kept for years, the food they actually like and whether they would rather be up early or have a lie in, and we build around that rather than expecting people to adapt to us. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and we knock before we come in. Days here are not heavily timetabled. Company, conversation and time in the garden for those who want them, the newspaper and quiet for those who do not. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work, so we keep our team settled and learn each person's history properly. Where somebody has limited sight or hearing, the way we approach and speak to them takes account of it. Health needs are managed with local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

We are Potton View, a residential care home in Sandy. We look after older people who are finding it difficult to manage at home on their own, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. We have kept our focus clear rather than trying to be all things to everyone. Residential care for older people is what we do. Doing it properly means knowing each person well: their history, the work they did, the family names, what comforts them and what reliably unsettles them. Staff who carry that knowledge are the ones who notice quickly when somebody is unwell or out of sorts. Beyond that, much of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable. A decent breakfast at a time that suits you. Your own chair and your own belongings. The garden when the weather allows. Company if you want it and quiet if you would rather, and somebody with the time to sit down and properly listen. We also support people to keep hold of what they can still manage themselves, and to keep up the connections they already have locally. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us and come and see the home.

Wendreth Court is a care home in March, Cambridgeshire, providing both residential and nursing care. We support older people and younger adults, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays. Offering residential and nursing care under one roof means somebody whose health needs grow does not have to move again. That is the main practical reason families choose a place like this, and it is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. Being moved is hard on anybody, and hardest on somebody living with dementia, for whom familiar faces and familiar surroundings are doing genuine work. The rest of what we do is the ordinary business of a household. Food people want to eat. Help arriving without a long wait. Laundry that comes back. Privacy when it is wanted and company when it is not. Being spoken to as somebody with a working life and a family rather than as a list of needs. For residents living with dementia we protect routine, keep surroundings familiar, and ask relatives for the history that lets us understand what somebody means. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome to arrive unannounced.

    • Care Home

Florence House Residential Home is in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, and we provide residential care for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available as well, whether booked in advance or needed at short notice. Most of what makes a care home good is ordinary detail rather than anything impressive. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we try to do it so unobtrusively that it feels like part of the day rather than a procedure, leaving as much privacy and choice with the resident as we can. The first couple of weeks after a move matter enormously, and we put thought into them. Before somebody arrives we want to know what time they wake, how they take their tea, what they cannot abide and who they want to be able to ring. Those details are what start turning a strange room into their room. We would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one later, so families who tell us when something is not right are doing us a favour rather than causing trouble. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

We are a residential care home in Waterbeach, near Cambridge. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment. With that mix of people under one roof, a single routine would suit nobody, so we do not run one. People get up when they are ready, eat what appeals to them and spend their days as they choose. What stays constant is that staff are about, and that they know the people here well enough to see when somebody is struggling with something they would not say out loud. Support plans are written with the person and with anyone they want involved, and they are reviewed when circumstances change rather than at set intervals. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we build it up at their pace instead of deciding in advance what is realistic. Communication is central. We take time to learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure new staff learn it before working alone. Where a person has a visual or hearing impairment, we make sure that knowledge is shared with everybody rather than held by one or two. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

    • Care Home

Bramley Avenue is a residential care home in Royston, Cambridgeshire, supporting adults with physical disabilities and adults with a visual or hearing impairment, including younger adults. Physical disability is often treated as a problem of equipment, and equipment matters, but the more important question is what somebody actually wants their life to contain and what stands between them and it. Sometimes that is a hoist or a wheelchair. Just as often it is transport, timing, or staff who are willing to plan an outing properly rather than decide it is too complicated. We support people with personal care, mobility, medication and the practical parts of the day, and we adapt how we communicate to suit each individual, particularly where sight or hearing is affected. The people who live here are adults with their own opinions about how things should be done, and our job is to make those opinions count rather than work around them. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome at any reasonable time.

Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to work out what lies behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom. For residents with mental health needs, stability, a calm household and staff who know a person well enough to notice a change do most of the good, and we work with local services and doctors. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time, and getting out for some air is part of the ordinary week rather than a special event. We keep the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day is spent. We support people living with dementia, and that work rests on continuity above anything else. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what lies behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. We also care for younger adults, planning their day around their own interests rather than expecting them to fit into everybody else's routine. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as the standard to hold rather than an achievement to rest on. The more telling measure is the everyday evidence, whether people are up and occupied and whether families feel able to raise a concern early. Anyone considering Lily House is welcome to visit.

La Marsh is a residential care home in Cambridge supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people living with a physical disability. We are a house rather than a unit, and the people who live here have a real say in how their own home is run. Support is planned individually. Some of our residents need help with most parts of the day, including personal care and help to move about safely. Others need very little of that but rely on us for routine, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what they find overwhelming. We take our time working that out and we ask the people who know somebody well. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, deciding what to do at the weekend and getting out locally. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer, and we help properly where help is needed. The right equipment and training are in place for residents with physical support needs, and our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed. Respite stays are available and give family carers a genuine break. Please contact us if you would like to come and see the house.

We care for older people and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. We support people living with eating disorders as well. That range works because our method stays consistent. We take time to learn how somebody communicates, what their day ought to contain and what tends to make a difficult one, and then we build support around that rather than fitting everybody into the same routine. Where a person can take on more for themselves, we make room for it instead of stepping in from habit. Life here belongs to the people who live in it. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and cautious about it, because that standard is far easier to reach than to hold, and the quickest way to lose it is to start quoting it at people. What gets us there is nothing clever. A settled staff team who know the residents properly rather than in outline. A day that belongs to the people living in it, so that they decide when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want. Rooms that are genuinely somebody's own. Families who feel able to say when something is wrong, and a manager who is on the floor rather than behind a door. For those living with dementia, we work from the person's own history. What they did, who their family are and what their afternoons used to look like usually explains more than any assessment. Please come and visit if you are considering care in the city. Come unannounced if you would rather.

    • Care Home

Alderton House is a residential care home in Ely, Cambridgeshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of the people living here are younger adults, and for most of them this is a settled long term home. We treat the house as belonging to the people who live in it. They arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to see family, because a home is somewhere you go out from and come back to, not somewhere you are kept. Support is individual and agreed with the person. Communication gets particular attention here, and we use speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply the understanding that comes from living alongside somebody for a long time. Without that, choice is something people are informed about rather than something they exercise. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody try the house before anything longer is decided. Our care is residential rather than nursing, which means help with washing and dressing, medication, eating well and moving about safely, alongside the things that are harder to measure but matter just as much: conversation, being listened to and somebody noticing when a person is not quite themselves. We support residents living with dementia, and our approach is to learn each person's history and habits properly so that reassurance can be given in terms that make sense to them. Community health professionals are brought in whenever something more clinical is needed. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a proper rest and letting a prospective resident get the feel of the home before any permanent decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit during an ordinary day, talk to the people who live here and ask us anything you want to know.

32 Kings Lane, part of the Royal Mencap Society, is a small residential home in Huntingdon supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. Being small is the point: the household can be shaped around the people who live in it rather than around a routine that suits an organisation. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it covers the things that make a week worth having: seeing people, going out, keeping up an interest, being useful, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and a routine that can be relied upon matters greatly to most of the people we support. We give people the time to do things themselves even when stepping in would be quicker, and where somebody wants more independence support is planned to withdraw gradually as they grow into it. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody get used to the house before anything permanent is discussed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

    • Care Home

Aliwal Manor Care Home is a care home in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. In a small town, a care home is not separate from the place around it. Families call in without ceremony, people go out into the town, and a fair number of our residents knew one another long before they came to live here. We try not to waste that. Keeping somebody connected to their own community does more good than most of what we could organise indoors. Inside, the day belongs to the residents. People get up when they want, eat what they want and spend their time where they choose. Rooms belong to the people in them, and staff are there to make those choices workable and to notice quietly when somebody is not quite right. For people living with dementia, our starting point is who the person has been. A working life, a family, a routine held for decades. That usually explains more about how somebody is now than anything in a medical file. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to come and look round, with or without an appointment.

Belmont Road is a residential care home in March, Cambridgeshire, providing a home for older people, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities. Having that mix living together works better than people sometimes expect. Support is built around the individual rather than around a category, so one person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same terms. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, write it down in a form that makes sense to them, and change it when they say so. People here are involved in the running of the house as far as they want to be, from choosing meals to helping with the shopping, and we support people to get out to work, college, clubs and family. Communication gets close attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from knowing somebody well. Short respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

Vera James House is a residential care home in Ely, Cambridgeshire, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. Barton Manor Care Home is a care home in Wisbech. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with a visual or hearing impairment and people managing a mental health condition. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We would rather say that here than leave a family to discover it, and we would encourage anybody considering us to visit and judge the home on what they see. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. Somebody in the later stages of dementia and somebody who has managed a mental health condition for thirty years need almost opposite things from us. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Please come and look round, and take your time over the decision.

The Orchards is a residential care home in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also take respite stays. We spend most of our attention on the parts of the day that a visitor never sees. Early mornings, when people need time rather than efficiency. Evenings, when the building goes quiet and somebody who cannot sleep needs company rather than a sedative. Those hours decide what living here is actually like. Where a resident cannot easily tell us what they need, we work at reading it. Unexplained restlessness is usually pain, or thirst, or needing the lavatory, and treating it as a behaviour rather than a message is one of the commonest failures in this work. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say so here than let a family come across it afterwards and wonder what else we chose not to mention. We accept what was found and there is work still in hand. Come without an appointment if you are considering us. Talk to residents and relatives out of our hearing, and ask us directly what has changed since the inspection and what has not.

    • Care Home

Langley Lodge Residential Home is a care home in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. We provide a home for older people and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to support somebody through a period of recovery after a spell in hospital. What we aim to offer is a settled, familiar place where people keep their own routines and their own things around them. We ask about preferences in detail, because how somebody likes their morning to go is not a small matter when it shapes the rest of their day. Some residents want company and conversation from breakfast onwards. Others want a newspaper, a quiet chair and to be left in peace. Both are entirely reasonable and neither needs justifying to us. We should be straightforward with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have a plan of work in hand and we are progressing it alongside colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly rather than find it elsewhere. If you are considering Langley Lodge for someone close to you, please come and visit. Look round properly, speak to our staff and residents, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed. We will answer plainly rather than steering you towards a brochure.

What care homes cost in Cambridgeshire, per week

Type of careWhat the council paysWhat self-funders are typically asked
Residential care Middle half of prices from 44 East homes. Median £1,582.Varies by council£1,421 to £1,708
Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935.Varies by council£1,800 to £2,126
Residential dementia care Middle half of prices from 33 East homes. Median £1,785.Not published separately£1,602 to £1,877
Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940.Not published separately£1,870 to £2,100

Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Cambridgeshire

It helps to know at the outset which of three routes a family is on, since each one moves at a different speed. Some people are assessed as eligible and receive a place the council arranges and helps to pay for. Some fund their own care entirely and can approach homes directly. A third group falls between the two, paying most of the fee themselves while the council contributes, sometimes with a relative adding a top up so that a preferred home stays within reach.

Starting with a care needs assessment

The assessment is free, is not means tested, and is the document that records what a person can no longer manage safely at home. Request it from Cambridgeshire County Council adult social care, or ask the ward team to arrange it where a hospital stay has brought matters to a head. A relative who has been doing the caring can ask for a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time. Whatever the funding position turns out to be, the written outcome is worth having, because it gives every home the same clear account of what is needed.

Fees and the financial assessment

Residential fees are quoted by the week and differ between homes according to the room, the support required and what is included beyond board and personal care. The financial assessment looks at income, savings and, in most cases, the value of a property, measured against national thresholds. Ask any home you are serious about what the weekly fee covers and what is billed separately, such as hairdressing, chiropody or transport to appointments. Ask as well how often fees are reviewed and what notice is given of an increase, since that question is rarely asked and always relevant.

Choosing between care homes in Cambridgeshire

Making sense of the ratings

Of the 90 homes listed, six are rated Outstanding and seventy one are rated Good, four are rated Requires Improvement and seven carry no rating yet. Check the date of the inspection alongside the judgement, because a rating given some years ago describes a home that may have changed hands or changed manager since. Where a home is rated Requires Improvement, the report will name what fell short, and a manager who talks openly about what has changed since is telling you something useful.

What a visit should tell you

Go at a time when the home is busy rather than at its quietest, and if you can, go twice. Notice whether residents are occupied and whether staff speak to them by name rather than about them. Ask how many permanent staff are on at night, how much agency cover is used across a typical week and how long the manager has been in post. Ask too what happens if needs increase and nursing becomes necessary, since a home registered for residential care alone cannot provide it. Distance matters more than families expect, because the home within easy reach is the one you will visit often, and regular visits do more for someone settling in than almost anything else.

Frequently asked questions about care homes in Cambridgeshire

Can Cambridgeshire County Council pay for a care home place?

It can, where the care needs assessment shows residential care is needed and the financial assessment shows the person cannot meet the fees in full. Income, savings and usually property are counted against national thresholds, and most people who qualify still contribute from their income. The council will have a view on what it pays, so a family choosing a more expensive home may be asked for a third party contribution. Anyone funding privately keeps the right to an assessment and to advice about the options.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Cambridgeshire?

Ask Cambridgeshire County Council adult social care for a care needs assessment, either for yourself or for a relative who agrees to it. A general practice or a hospital discharge team can also make the referral, which is common when someone is already an inpatient. The assessment costs nothing and does not depend on income, and it looks at daily tasks, mobility, safety and the help already being given at home. Ask for the outcome in writing, as it underpins both the funding decision and your conversations with homes.

How far in advance should we start looking at care homes?

Begin before the decision becomes urgent, because the homes families speak most warmly of tend to have a waiting list rather than a free room. Starting early also allows more than one visit, and a second visit at a different hour often changes an opinion. Where a hospital discharge sets the timetable you may have days rather than weeks, so ask the ward team what help is available. Even a rough shortlist prepared in advance makes a hurried decision considerably less risky.

Which care homes in Cambridgeshire are listed here?

90 homes registered in Cambridgeshire appear on this page, each regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Six hold an Outstanding rating, seventy one are rated Good, four are rated Requires Improvement and seven are not yet rated. Every entry opens onto a profile with the inspection report and registration details behind it. The list reflects current registration data, so it shows what is registered rather than which homes have a room available today.

What should I ask when visiting a care home in Cambridgeshire?

Ask how long the manager has been there and what staff turnover has looked like over the past year, since stability shows up in everything else. Ask how care plans are written, how often they are reviewed and how families are told when something changes. Find out what the home does when a resident becomes unwell at night and who makes the call to seek medical help. Ask to see the actual room on offer, look at the activities on that week, and stay for a meal if you are invited.

What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A care home provides accommodation together with personal care, which covers help with washing, dressing, eating and the shape of the day. A nursing home provides all of that with registered nurses on duty, which matters where there is a wound to dress, complex medication or a condition needing clinical supervision. The Care Quality Commission registers homes for one, the other or both, and each profile states what applies. The homes gathered here are registered to provide accommodation with personal care.
