About Us
The Firs Residential Care Home is in Ely, Cambridgeshire. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, adults with physical disabilities and younger adults, and we take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks rather than permanently.
We try to run a home rather than an institution. Rooms belong to the people in them, with their own furniture and photographs. Meals are worth sitting down to. The day has a shape without becoming a timetable, and there is company and activity for those who want it and a quiet corner for those who do not.
What makes that safe as well as pleasant is staff who know people rather than tasks. Our team notice when somebody is off colour, when an appetite has fallen away or when a normally talkative person has gone quiet, and they act on it with the GP or district nurse rather than waiting to see what happens.
For people living with dementia we keep routines and faces steady, learn about their earlier lives so conversation has somewhere to go, and give time rather than rushing. Where somebody with a physical disability wants to do things for themselves, we make sure equipment and layout help rather than hinder.
Families are welcome whenever suits them. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please ring if you would like to look round.
