About Us

Southwell Court is a residential care home in Royston, Cambridgeshire. We are home to older people and to younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who need care for a short period, whether that is following a spell in hospital or to give a family carer a proper rest.

Our approach is not complicated. We think people should be able to carry on being themselves, with support quietly available for the parts of life that have become harder. Residents get up when they want, keep their own routines and interests, have their own belongings around them, and decide how much they join in with what is going on. Some days that means company and activity, other days it means a quiet chair and a newspaper, and both are perfectly good choices.

Because we support younger adults as well as older residents, we are careful not to run the home as though everyone wants the same things. Preferences are asked about individually and we act on what we are told.

Families are welcome here at ordinary times, not just at arranged ones, and we keep relatives informed when something changes.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep an eye on the everyday details that hold that standard up, and we would encourage anyone considering a move here to visit, look properly and ask whatever they want to ask.

More about the care at Southwell Court

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Growing older often means a slow build up of small tasks that used to be easy, and residential support is about quietly taking on those tasks without taking over the rest. At Southwell Court in Royston, which is registered for older person care, that generally covers help with washing and dressing at a pace that suits the resident, prompting or administering prescribed medication, meals and drinks through the day, and simple companionship so nobody sits alone unless they want to. Families thinking about a move should ask how morning and evening routines are agreed with each resident, how staffing is arranged overnight, how call bells are answered after dark, and how the home passes information on when shifts change. Weekly fees in the East of England typically sit between £1000 and £1350, with Cambridgeshire County Council usually funding around £750 to £900.

Younger Adults

Being under 65 in a care home works best when daily life is not built entirely around much older residents. Southwell Court is registered to support younger adults alongside older people, and its own description says preferences are asked about individually rather than assumed. Families should ask how choices about routine, outings and visitors are handled, and how the home helps a younger resident keep hold of their own interests.

Respite Care

Planned short stays at Southwell Court, which is registered for respite, are worth arranging well ahead, particularly around school holidays when demand rises. Many homes ask for a minimum of one or two weeks and want current medication, GP details, clothing labelled, and any mobility aids sent in with the guest. A respite booking can also serve as a gentle trial before any decision about permanent care is made.

Residential Care

Living in a residential home is meant to feel like ordinary life with help attached rather than a hospital ward. Southwell Court holds a residential registration, which means it supports personal care, meals, medication and social contact, but does not provide the twenty four hour input from registered nurses that a nursing home offers. In practice that suits people whose needs are largely around daily living rather than complex clinical care, and a district nurse would usually visit for anything that needs a nursing skill. The home was rated good by the Care Quality Commission at its April 2021 inspection. Families comparing options should ask how meals and activities are planned, how personal care is recorded, and what happens if a resident's health changes and nursing input starts to be needed on a regular basis.
