Nursing Homes in Essex 90 nursing homes · 62 rated Good by CQC

Listed on this page are 90 nursing homes in Essex, each registered to provide clinical care with a qualified nurse on duty rather than personal care alone. The published inspection results give a clear picture of where standards sit. Three homes hold an Outstanding rating, among them Alderwood Care Home, fifty eight are rated Good, seventeen are rated Requires Improvement, one has been rated Inadequate, and ten have yet to receive a rating from the Care Quality Commission. Essex County Council is the body responsible for carrying out care needs assessments and for the financial assessment that settles how much help towards the fees a person can expect. With results spread this widely, the rating is best used to order the list rather than to close the question. Open the profile of any home you are considering, work through the inspection report that sits behind its rating, and let what inspectors found about staffing, safety and daily life shape the decision you reach.

The New Deanery Care Home is a nursing home in Braintree. We care for older people and younger adults with nursing needs, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We should be plain about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and we would rather raise it ourselves and answer your questions than have you come across it later. Having qualified nurses on duty at all hours means we can manage complex health needs, medication, wound and continence care and care at the end of life without somebody having to move on again. It also means changes in a resident's health are noticed by people who know them well. Residents have their own rooms and their own routines, and we ask at the outset how somebody has always liked their day to run. For people living with dementia we keep the day steady and unhurried and we learn what reassures a particular person. For those with physical disabilities we pay attention to equipment, transfers and how the building is arranged. Families are welcome through the day and we keep in touch regularly rather than only when something has gone wrong. Please come and look round, ask us difficult questions, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here.

Rawreth Court is a nursing home in Rayleigh, Essex. We care for adults who need registered nursing alongside help with daily life, including older people, people living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions and younger adults whose health needs call for a nurse on duty at any hour. Nursing cover around the clock is what allows us to support people whose needs are genuinely complex. It means medication, skin and pressure care, continence and nutrition are managed properly, and that health is watched closely enough for changes to be picked up early. Where somebody is approaching the end of their life, it means they can stay somewhere familiar with people who know them. Clinical care alone is not enough, though. A nursing home can drift into being a place where the day belongs to the staff rather than to the people living in it, and we work against that. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who comes to see them. For people living with dementia we keep the day in a familiar order and the staff group as steady as we can, and we take time to learn about a person's earlier life, because it explains a great deal about how they are now. Respite and short stays are available. Please ring us if you would like to look round Rawreth Court.

We are Okeley Care Home in Chelmsford, Essex. We provide both residential and nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite admissions for shorter stays. Because we offer residential and nursing care together, people do not have to move on when their health needs increase. Families are often anxious about exactly that, and it is why we work at keeping our nursing team stable rather than relying on a constant stream of agency cover. Nursing settings can easily feel clinical, so we push against it. People get up when they want, eat what they like, sit where they choose and keep their own furniture, pictures and habits. We ask about the details of a life, the work someone did, the garden they kept, the hour they prefer to be left in peace, and we write those things into how we work so they survive a change of shift. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail: knowing a person's history, recognising early what unsettles them, going at their pace rather than the timetable's. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

Edensor Care Centre is a nursing home in Clacton on Sea caring for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia or mental ill health, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss. Qualified nurses are on duty at every hour of the day and night. Nursing on site means health needs are attended to here as they arise rather than arranged around visits from elsewhere, and it means our nurses and carers work as one team. What somebody likes, what unsettles them and how they want their day to run counts alongside the clinical detail. We plan for each person individually. Some need nursing support delivered precisely and reliably; others mainly need comfort, good food and help keeping in touch with the people who matter to them. Where dementia is part of the picture we keep the day familiar and unhurried and use what families tell us about a person's life. Where mental ill health is involved we work closely with community teams and include the person in decisions. Meals are cooked on the premises and adapted where swallowing or appetite is a difficulty. Families are welcome at any reasonable hour. Short stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring to arrange a visit.

Haven Lodge is a nursing home in Clacton on Sea, caring for older people and for adults whose health needs mean qualified nurses need to be on hand at any hour. That cover means changes are noticed early and managed here wherever possible rather than through repeated journeys to hospital. We care for people living with dementia, where a steady routine and familiar faces matter more than anything else we could provide, and for people managing mental health conditions, where patience and continuity count for a great deal. We also support people living with a physical disability, where dignity and practical independence matter as much as clinical care, and younger adults, whose day we plan around their own interests. Respite care is available too, for people recovering after illness and for family carers who need a break. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, and we prefer to say that outright. Until we do, come and look round, meet the nurses and carers and ask us whatever you need to, including the questions people often feel awkward asking.

Rosedale Court is a nursing home in Rayleigh, with qualified nurses on duty at all times. We care for older people and younger adults, including many people living with dementia and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. Nursing here means steady attention to the things that keep a person comfortable and well: medicines, mobility, nutrition and hydration, skin, continence and pain. We involve GPs, district nurses and specialists early rather than late, and we talk things through with the person and their family instead of handling them quietly in the background. We need to be straight about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute what was found. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and increased how closely senior staff check the care actually given at the bedside rather than the care written down. That work continues and we are not going to claim otherwise. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions openly than leave a family to discover it later. Around the clinical care we try to protect ordinary life, so people keep their own routines and belongings and eat food that suits their taste as well as their diet. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, and ask us anything.

Woodland Grove is a nursing home in Loughton, Essex, where qualified nurses are on hand at every hour of the day and night. We care for older people whose health needs have gone beyond what residential care or family support can safely manage, and we also support younger adults living with complex conditions. Nursing care here means proper clinical attention to wounds, medication, continence, nutrition and mobility, delivered without turning someone's home into a ward. Our residents include people living with dementia, people with significant physical disabilities, and those with a visual or hearing impairment, and we adapt how we communicate and how we arrange a room so that everyday life stays as easy as we can make it. We also offer respite stays, which often help a family who has been managing at home and needs a period of proper rest. What we want is for the medical side of things to sit quietly in the background. Residents choose when to get up, where to spend the afternoon and who they want beside them, and we keep families informed and involved rather than waiting for them to ask. When someone's condition changes we say so early and we explain the options plainly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at nursing care for a relative, we would rather you came and saw the place for yourself, met the nurses and asked us the awkward questions.

    • Nursing Home

Cheviot is a nursing home in Colchester. We care for older people and younger adults whose needs include nursing, including people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are part of what we do. Because nursing is provided here, nobody reaches a point of being too unwell to stay. That stability is worth more than it sounds, particularly to families who have already arranged one difficult move. Having younger residents alongside older ones means we plan individually rather than running one programme. Somebody in their forties who needs nursing care has not finished with life, and the worst thing a place like this can do is quietly treat them as a patient whose life is now their treatment. For residents with physical disabilities we plan the practical side around what a person can still do themselves rather than what is fastest for us. The clinical side is only part of a day. The rest is food people want, getting outside, prompt help and privacy. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Ask us who is on tonight and whether they know the people they are looking after.

Admirals Reach Care Home is a nursing home in Chelmsford, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across Essex, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people who have a physical disability. Qualified nurses are here at every hour, and that is what makes the rest possible. Complex medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the close observation that catches deterioration before it becomes an emergency are routine work for us. Many of the people who move in have spent months going in and out of hospital, and the first thing that changes is that the cycle stops. Good nursing is the foundation rather than the point. The point is that somebody gets to carry on being themselves while their health is looked after. So we ask before we act, we keep personal care private, we make visitors welcome at inconvenient hours, and we take the trouble to find out what a particular person would actually like to do with an afternoon. For residents whose mental health needs sit alongside physical ill health, we try to hold both properly at once and we work with the teams already involved rather than starting over. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know their preferred way of transferring matter enormously. With dementia we rely on familiar faces and a calm pace. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Visit at a busy time and ask the nurses about the hard days.

Longmead Court Nursing Home is in Braintree, Essex. We provide nursing care for older people and for younger adults whose health needs mean that qualified nurses should be available at any hour of the day or night. Many of the people who live here have dementia, and a number are managing mental health conditions alongside physical illness. That combination takes skill and patience. It means watching for pain that someone cannot easily describe, keeping the surroundings calm and familiar, and adjusting how we communicate as needs change rather than assuming that what worked before still works now. We plan care with residents and their families. Sleep, food, privacy, company and the ordinary shape of a day matter as much as the clinical side, and we record the small preferences that make a place feel like someone's own. We work closely with GPs, community teams and hospital specialists so that treatment happens promptly. Respite stays are available for families who need a break and for people needing nursing support for a short period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to hide from that. We know which areas need attention, we have an improvement plan and we are working through it with the team. Please ask us about it directly when you visit, and judge the home on what you find.

Here at Asher House, we provide nursing care for the people who come to live with us or stay for a short while in Walton On The Naze, a quiet and welcoming corner of Essex. We support a range of needs, including nursing care, learning disability and autism, care for younger adults, and respite stays for those who need a temporary period of support or a break for their loved ones. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that trust lightly. Whether someone is moving in permanently or joining us for a short respite break, we want every person to feel genuinely at home here. That means listening carefully, getting to know individual routines and preferences, and making sure people feel respected and involved in their own care. Our team works closely with residents, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure that care plans reflect what actually matters to each person rather than following a one size fits all approach. For those living with a learning disability or autism, we place real importance on consistency, clear communication, and building familiar, trusting relationships with the staff they see day to day. Being based in Walton On The Naze means we are part of a genuine community, and we value the connections that brings. Families are always welcome, and we encourage people to stay involved in the lives of those they care about. We are currently unrated by the Care Quality Commission, and we welcome that scrutiny as part of being accountable to the people we support. We are committed to being open and honest with residents and their families about how we are doing and where we are working to improve.

We provide nursing care for younger adults, including people with a learning disability, people who are autistic, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays. Having registered nurses on the team means we can support people whose health needs are significant and who might otherwise have to live a long way from their family in order to get the right care. Nursing here is part of daily life rather than the whole of it: the medical side is managed properly so that the rest of the day can belong to the person. We plan support individually. People choose how they spend their time, what they eat and who they see, and we help them keep in touch with family and get out of the building regularly. For people who do not use speech, our team learns how each person communicates and takes the time to get it right. Respite guests are prepared for carefully, with visits beforehand wherever possible, so that a short stay feels manageable. Great Wheatley Nursing Home is in Rayleigh, Essex. We care for older people and younger adults who need nursing support, including people living with dementia, and we take respite admissions alongside permanent places. Having qualified nurses on site around the clock means we can look after people whose health needs are significant or changing, support people coming out of hospital, and provide care at the end of life properly and unhurriedly, rather than moving somebody on when their needs increase. It also means families do not have to worry about what happens overnight. Clinical care is only part of the job. What people notice day to day is whether their relative is comfortable, clean, eating well, listened to and answered when they call, and whether the people looking after them know their name and their story. Those are the standards we hold ourselves to. Dementia care runs through much of our work. We keep the environment calm, routines familiar and staffing as steady as we can manage, and we take time to learn each person's history so we can respond to the feeling behind a difficult moment rather than simply to the behaviour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families are welcome at Great Wheatley at any reasonable hour, and we would far rather hear a concern early than have it saved up. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Residents should be able to get up when they choose, eat food they actually like, keep their own belongings around them and have someone talk with them about something other than their health. Where we support autistic residents or people with a learning disability, we pay attention to communication and to keeping routines predictable, because an environment that feels like a hospital ward helps nobody. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a genuine break or someone needs a settled period of recovery after a hospital admission. We work closely with general practitioners, district nurses and hospital teams, and we keep families informed when health changes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Joseph Nursing and Care Home is in Clacton on Sea, Essex, providing nursing and residential care for older people and younger adults. Having qualified nurses on duty at all hours means that health needs can be met here, by people who know the resident, rather than through repeated journeys elsewhere. Many of the people living with us are living with dementia. We approach that by learning each person's history and habits, keeping the day familiar and unhurried, explaining changes before they happen, and treating distress as something with a cause rather than something to be contained. The rest of our nursing work is a matter of attention to detail: medication, mobility, skin care, nutrition, pain and comfort, all done carefully and without fuss. We want the place to feel like a home rather than a clinical setting. Rooms are personalised, residents decide how their days run, and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period, including after a hospital admission. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, so we would encourage you to come and form your own view. Visit at an ordinary time of day, meet our nurses and residents, and ask us anything you want to know.

Beaumont Manor is a nursing home in Frinton on Sea, Essex. We care for older people who need qualified nursing as well as everyday support, with registered nurses on duty so that changing health needs can be met here. Our nursing team supports people with long term conditions, wound and pressure care, nutrition, continence and medication, working closely with GPs and community specialists. We also care for residents living with dementia and for people whose mental health needs shape the support they require, and we support residents with physical disabilities and with sight or hearing loss, adapting how we communicate so that nobody is left out of a conversation about their own care. Respite stays are available for people who need nursing support for a short period, and for families who provide care at home and need a planned break. We want to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have taken that seriously. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff team and with the people who live here and their families, and we would rather tell you that plainly than leave you to find it out afterwards. If you are considering Beaumont Manor, please visit. Ask us difficult questions, speak to our staff, and see the home as it actually is on an ordinary day.

We care for older people who need qualified nursing alongside everyday support, for residents living with dementia, for people with physical disabilities and for younger adults with nursing needs. We also offer respite stays. Registered nurses are on duty here at all hours. That is what allows wounds, medication, pain relief, continence, long term conditions and end of life care to be managed on site, and it means changes in a resident's health are noticed and acted on quickly rather than left until the next appointment. We work alongside GPs, community specialists and hospital teams so decisions get made calmly and in good time, and people do not have to move on as their needs increase. We try hard to keep the place feeling like a home rather than a ward. Residents choose when to get up, what to eat, where to sit and how much company they want, and rooms are furnished with their own belongings. Visitors are welcome without appointment. For residents living with dementia, familiar surroundings and consistent staffing do most of the work, and we take time to understand what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Please arrange to come and look round.

Brentwood Care Centre is a nursing home in Brentwood, Essex. We care for adults who need registered nursing alongside help with daily life, including older people, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and younger adults whose health needs call for nursing care. Nurses are on duty here at any hour, and that is what allows us to support people with genuinely complex needs. It means managing medication, skin and pressure care, continence and nutrition, and watching health closely enough that a change is picked up while it is still small. Where somebody is nearing the end of their life, it means we can keep them comfortable in familiar surroundings with people who know them. The clinical side is only half the job. A nursing home can drift into being a place where everything is done to people and almost nothing is chosen by them, and we work against that. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who visits. For people with a physical disability, time is the thing that matters. Transfers, positioning and personal care take as long as they take, and rushing is where dignity and safety are both lost. Respite and short stays are available, including for people recovering after hospital. Please ring us if you would like to look round Brentwood Care Centre.

Kingsgate Care Home is a nursing home in Clacton on Sea, Essex. We provide nursing care for older people and for younger adults whose needs call for qualified nursing support, with registered nurses on duty. Our clinical work covers long term conditions, wound and pressure area care, nutrition and hydration, continence and medication, alongside close working with GPs, community nurses and hospital teams. We also support residents living with dementia, keeping the day familiar and unhurried, and residents with physical disabilities and with sight or hearing loss, where the right equipment, enough time and a considered way of communicating make all the difference. The thing we work hardest at is making sure the nursing does not take over the person. Somebody living here still chooses when to get up, what to eat, where to sit and who to see. Care is discussed with them rather than around them. Families are welcome at whatever time suits, and we ask them to stay closely involved, because they hold a picture of their relative that we could not build on our own. Respite stays are available for people needing nursing support for a short period and for families who provide care at home and need a planned break. Queens Court Care Home is a nursing home in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. We provide nursing care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. Having registered nurses on the team means we can care for people whose health needs are significant, and we can usually go on caring for somebody as those needs increase. That continuity is what most families are looking for, and we protect it carefully. The day here belongs to our residents. People get up when they wake, eat what they enjoy and spend their time in company or quietly as they prefer. Rooms are private space and are treated as such. For people living with dementia, our team works from knowledge of the person, their history and their habits, keeping the surroundings calm and giving time rather than instruction. We keep in regular contact with GPs and community teams so that changes in health are noticed early and unnecessary hospital admissions are avoided. St George's Witham Nursing Home provides nursing care in Witham, Essex, for older people and for younger adults whose health needs call for qualified nursing support. We care for people living with dementia, for people with physical disability and for those whose medical needs are best met by having registered nurses on site at all hours. Alongside longer stays we offer respite, which can give a family carer a proper rest or give someone a safe place to regain their strength after a hospital admission. Whatever brings a person to us, we start by asking about their life rather than their diagnosis, and we write their care plan with them and with the people who know them best. We should be straightforward about our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission, which rated us as requires improvement overall. We are not going to gloss over that. We know which areas the inspectors asked us to put right, we are working through them steadily, and we are happy to talk any family through what has changed and what we are still doing. We would rather have that conversation openly than have you hear it from a report alone. What has not changed is the day to day care our nurses and carers give, the food, the company and the willingness to pick up the phone when a relative wants to know how somebody is. If you are considering St George's for someone close to you, please visit, ask us difficult questions and judge us on what you see.

Marillac Neurological Care Centre in Brentwood, Essex, provides nursing care for adults with complex neurological conditions and physical disabilities, including younger adults and older people, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather put that first than have somebody find it later. It is not the rating we want and we are not going to explain it away. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff, the people who live here and their families, and anyone considering the centre is entitled to ask exactly what is changing, who is accountable for it and what evidence there is that it is taking effect. The work itself carries on meanwhile and it matters greatly to the people who depend on it. Neurological care asks for specialist nursing, careful attention to positioning, nutrition, communication and pain, and close work with therapists and consultants. It also asks that we keep seeing an adult with a life and opinions rather than a set of clinical needs. Respite stays are available. We would encourage families to visit and judge our progress directly.

Ashlar House provides nursing care in Epping for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also offer planned respite stays. Qualified nurses are here throughout the day and night, which means conditions can be managed steadily as they change, medicines are properly reviewed, and people who would otherwise face repeated hospital admissions can usually be looked after here by staff who know them well. For people approaching the end of their lives, it means comfort, dignity and family around them rather than an ambulance and an unfamiliar ward. Nursing alone would not make this a good place to live, so we work hard at the rest of it. Residents decide when to get up and how to spend their time, meals are meant to be enjoyed rather than administered, and relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. We would far rather somebody dropped in unannounced than felt they needed an appointment to see a member of their own family. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and we work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking residents and families how we are doing.

Brentwood Arches Care Home is a nursing home in Brentwood, Essex. We care for older people whose needs go beyond residential care, and for younger adults living with conditions that require qualified nursing. Respite stays are available when a family carer needs a break or cover. Registered nurses are on duty here at all hours. Medication is managed closely, wound care, catheter care and conditions that vary from week to week are handled on site, and a change in a resident's health tends to be noticed early because the person who notices knows them well. We work with GPs, district nurses, therapists and hospital teams, and we press on a resident's behalf when something is slow in coming. Dementia care sits alongside the clinical side of our work and cannot really be separated from it. Somebody in pain or frightened who cannot say so will show us in other ways, and reading that properly depends on knowing the person. So we ask families about working lives, music, food and old habits, and we keep the day calm and familiar rather than busy and full of surprises. For younger adults, we are conscious that nobody plans to live in a nursing home, so privacy, independence and holding on to friendships and interests get real attention here. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would rather be asked difficult questions than leave anybody worrying. Braintree Nursing Home is in Essex, and we care for a wider range of people than most nursing homes take on. Older people whose health needs go beyond residential care. Younger adults living with conditions that require qualified nursing. People living with dementia. People living with mental ill health alongside a physical condition. People with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. People living with an eating disorder, and people dealing with problems with alcohol or drugs. Respite stays are available as well. Registered nurses on duty at all hours is what makes that breadth possible. Medication is managed closely, wound care and conditions that fluctuate are handled on site, and a change in somebody's health is usually noticed early because the person noticing knows them. We work with GPs, district nurses, community mental health teams, therapists and hospital staff, and we keep asking when a resident needs something slow to arrive. Dementia care runs through much of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person with a history rather than managing a condition. Families hold most of that history and we ask for it early. Across the rest of our work, what matters most is steadiness and an absence of judgement. People arrive here having sometimes been let down elsewhere, and we take that seriously. We work closely with the GP practice and the community health and mental health teams who support the home. Beyond the clinical side, this is where people live. Residents keep their own rooms and their own belongings, choose when to get up and what to eat, and can have company or quiet as they prefer. We care for older people who need nursing support, including many with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available for people needing nursing care for a limited period or whose family carer needs a proper break. Where physical disability is part of the picture we think hard about equipment, seating and positioning, because those details decide how comfortable and how independent somebody can be. • Nursing Home

Gifford House Care Home is a nursing home in Basildon, Essex. Qualified nurses are on duty here throughout the day and night, which is usually why families come to us. The level of health need has outgrown what could be managed at home or in a residential home. We care for older people, many of them living with dementia. A good number of our residents have a physical disability and need daily help to move safely and comfortably, and some are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing. Where sight or hearing has gone, the ordinary design of a building starts working against a person, so we pay attention to light, noise, contrast and the way staff approach somebody rather than simply arriving at the bedside. The nursing itself is thorough and quiet. Medicines, wounds, pain, pressure care, eating and drinking well. The part that cannot be written into a procedure is noticing, and that comes from the same staff seeing the same residents week after week. We also take respite admissions where the clinical needs rule out a residential stay, which gives a family carer a genuine rest rather than a worried fortnight. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Looking at nursing homes is rarely a cheerful job. Come and see us anyway, bring your list of questions, and talk to whoever happens to be on shift.

Weavers Grange is a nursing home in Halstead, Essex. We support older people and younger adults who need nursing care, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. Having registered nurses on the team means we can care for people with genuinely complex health needs without them having to move again as those needs change. That matters more than it might sound. Repeated moves are hard on anybody and particularly hard on somebody living with dementia, for whom familiar surroundings and familiar faces are doing real work. The clinical side is only part of a day here and usually the smaller part. The rest is ordinary life: meals people want, help arriving without a long wait, privacy, company, and being treated as somebody with a history rather than a diagnosis. We try to keep the nursing from crowding that out, because it easily can. For residents living with dementia we protect routine, keep surroundings familiar, and ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they have said. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather hear about something small going wrong now than be praised in general terms.

We accept what was identified and we are working through it, and we are not going to claim in a paragraph that everything is resolved. Hutton View is a nursing home in Brentwood, Essex. We care for older people and younger adults whose needs include nursing, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are part of what we do. Nursing on site means a change in somebody's health is handled here rather than becoming a reason to move them again. Families who have already arranged one upheaval usually understand the value of that immediately. Comfortable surroundings matter and they are not what makes a home good. What decides it is whether the food is worth finishing, how long help takes to arrive, whether staff know who you were before you needed them, and whether anybody notices when you have gone quiet. That is where we put our effort. For residents living with dementia we keep the routine steady and ask relatives early for the history that makes a person's remarks comprehensible rather than confusing. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see the place on an ordinary weekday rather than by arrangement, because that is the visit that tells you something.

Badgers Lodge is a nursing home in Leigh on Sea. We care for older people who need nursing support and for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults who need nursing input, including younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Combining nursing care with support for people who have a learning disability or who are autistic takes particular attention. Health needs in this group are too often missed or put down to something else, and we try hard not to let that happen here. Registered nurses are on site around the clock, so changes get picked up early and managed in the home rather than through repeated hospital visits. Just as important is how the place feels. People here have their own rooms and their own routines, and support is built around what each person wants to be able to do rather than around convenience. We learn how each person communicates, including those who use little or no speech, and we pay attention to noise, lighting and predictability, because all of it affects how good a day somebody has. For older residents needing nursing care, the same principles apply. Reliable clinical care, done properly and on time, alongside a life that is actually worth getting up for. Respite stays suit people needing nursing input briefly and family carers who need a real break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Badgers Lodge.

St Peters Court is a nursing home in Maldon, with qualified nurses on duty at all times. We care for older people and younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, mental health needs and physical disabilities. Respite stays are part of what we do. People usually come to us when health needs have grown beyond what support at home or a residential home can meet, and our task is to meet those needs without letting them become the whole of somebody's life. Nursing here means consistent attention to the things that keep a person comfortable and well: medicines, mobility, nutrition and hydration, skin, continence and pain, reviewed properly and talked through with the person and their family rather than handled quietly in the background. We involve GPs, district nurses and community teams early rather than late. Around that, ordinary life carries on. People rise when they wake, sit where they choose, keep their own furniture and photographs about them, and eat food that suits their taste as well as any clinical need. Where there is a physical disability we think hard about equipment, layout and timing. With dementia we rely on knowing somebody well, gathering their history with their family and keeping it current. When somebody is nearing the end of life we aim to be honest, present and unhurried. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

St George's Witham Nursing Home is in Witham, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across this part of Essex, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. We will deal with the rating first, because you will find it anyway. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around it. The inspection identified things that were not good enough, we accept the findings rather than dispute them, and we are working through what was raised. Anybody considering the home should ask us directly what was found and what has changed since, and expect a straight account rather than a reassuring one. The work itself continues as it must. Qualified nurses are on site at all hours, which is what allows people with complex health needs to live here rather than being moved repeatedly between home and hospital. Medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and catching deterioration early are the substance of our days. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of transferring are what keep a life from shrinking. With dementia we work on familiar faces and a calm pace, because that settles distress in a way explanation never does. Come and see the home at a busy time of day, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place as it is now.

Godden Lodge Care Home is a nursing home in Benfleet, supporting people from across Essex. We care for older people and younger adults with nursing needs, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. Having nurses here around the clock is what allows us to look after people whose health needs are genuinely complex. Medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the steady monitoring that heads off a crisis are routine work for us rather than something exceptional. Alongside that, we spend a lot of effort on the part that nursing homes most often get wrong, which is letting the clinical side swallow everything else. People here are adults with preferences and histories. Somebody who needs help with every physical task still gets to decide when they get up, what they wear and who comes into their room. For people with a physical disability we make sure the right equipment is there and that nobody is left in their room because getting them out is inconvenient. With dementia we work on familiarity and calm rather than correction, and we lean on families for the history that helps us reach somebody. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. We would rather you came and looked, spoke to the nurses on duty and asked how we manage the hard nights as well as the straightforward afternoons.

Arranging and funding a nursing home place in Essex

Few families begin here, yet the funding question tends to decide which homes are realistic long before anyone books a visit. Nursing care costs more each week than residential care, because a qualified nurse must be on duty at all hours, and the sooner that arithmetic is understood the less wasted effort there is in the search.

Starting with a care needs assessment

An assessment is free and open to anyone who appears to need care and support, whatever their savings, and it is the sensible first move even for a family expecting to pay privately. Essex County Council is the authority responsible for carrying it out and for the care and support plan that follows, which records the level of care needed and whether a nursing setting is the right answer. Homes rely on that plan when judging whether they can meet somebody's needs safely, so having it ready makes early enquiries far more productive.

Where the funding comes from

A financial assessment then weighs capital, income and property against the national thresholds to decide what the council contributes and what the person pays. NHS funded nursing care is paid separately and goes directly to the home towards the nursing element of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the balance. Where somebody's needs are primarily health needs rather than social care needs, NHS continuing healthcare can cover the placement in full, and it is worth asking whether that has been considered.

What the weekly fee should tell you

Fees vary between homes according to room, location and how much clinical support a resident needs. Ask for the figure in writing along with what falls outside it, how often it is reviewed and how far fees have risen over recent years. Ask too what the home does when private savings run down, because the answer says a good deal about how it treats residents over time.

Choosing between nursing homes in Essex

Eighty nine homes is a manageable field once distance, clinical registration and inspection history have been used to narrow it. The aim is a shortlist small enough to visit properly, since nothing on a website matches half an hour spent inside a home.

Matching the home to the clinical need

Every home here is registered for nursing, which means a nurse is present rather than reachable by telephone. That matters for wound care, catheter and stoma management, medication that has to be monitored closely, and conditions that can change without warning. Where the daily need is help with washing, dressing, meals and company, a residential home may serve just as well at a lower weekly cost. Deciding this early avoids the distress of a second move a few months later.

Reading the inspection record

The ratings across Essex are uneven, with three homes Outstanding, fifty eight Good, seventeen at Requires Improvement, one Inadequate and ten not yet rated. Hallmark Anisha Grange Luxury Care Home is among those holding Outstanding. Check the date of a report as well as its conclusion, look at which of the key questions inspectors marked down, and ask the manager directly what has changed since the visit.

What to look for once you are there

Go twice if the home allows it, once arranged and once at a busier hour such as mid morning or a mealtime. Ask how many registered nurses cover a night shift, how sickness and leave are filled, and how long the manager has held the post. Notice whether residents who cannot easily speak for themselves are still spoken to, because that says more about a home than any brochure.

Frequently asked questions about nursing homes in Essex

Can Essex County Council pay towards a nursing home place?

It can, where a financial assessment shows capital and income falling below the national thresholds. The council assesses the level of need first, then looks separately at finances to decide its contribution and what the person pays from income. NHS funded nursing care is paid towards the nursing part of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the rest. If the main need is a health need, NHS continuing healthcare may fund the whole placement instead.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Contact the adult social care team at Essex County Council and ask for an assessment for the person who needs support. It is free and available to anyone who appears to need care, whatever their savings, and either the person or a relative can request it. A practitioner will look at daily living, mobility, health conditions, risk and the help already coming from family. The care and support plan that follows guides both the type of home to look for and any funding decision.

How early should we start looking at nursing homes?

Sooner than most families expect, because the better regarded homes in Essex often hold waiting lists and rarely have the right room free at short notice. Where a hospital discharge is likely, start as soon as nursing care is first mentioned rather than waiting for a date to be confirmed. Visiting even a few homes in advance turns a rushed decision into a considered one. If nothing is urgent yet, early visits cost an afternoon and make the eventual choice far less pressured.

Which nursing homes in Essex appear on this page?

This page lists 90 nursing homes across Essex registered with the Care Quality Commission. Homes such as Colonia Court Care Home, Godden Lodge Care Home and Cherry Wood Grange Care Home appear alongside larger care centres and more specialist units. Each listing carries the current CQC rating where one has been published. Opening a profile gives you the findings behind that rating before you make contact.

What should I ask when visiting a nursing home in Essex?

Ask how many registered nurses and care staff are on duty by day and overnight, and how the home covers sickness and annual leave. Find out how long the manager has been in post and how settled the nursing team is, since stability usually shows in the consistency of care. Ask how care plans are reviewed, how families are told about changes, and how the home works with district nurses and hospital teams. It is also fair to ask what would happen if the person's needs became more complex.

What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A care home provides personal care, meals, company and supervision from staff trained in care but not registered as nurses. A nursing home is registered for clinical care as well, keeping a qualified nurse on duty at all times. Every home listed on this page holds nursing registration. Where someone needs regular clinical attention such as wound care, catheter management or complex medication, the nursing setting is the safer choice.
